2. The Ins and Outs of Cancer Essay
The Ins and Outs of Cancer
Cancer has affected the lives of each and every one of us alive today. Many people have know
someone with cancer, yet even those who haven t have been bombarded with constant reminders of its
terrible threat. Although cancer is often referred to as a single condition, it actually consists of more
than 100 different diseases, all characterized by the uncontrolled growth, reproduction, and spread of
abnormal body cells. All of these diseases are individually unique, yet the basic processes that produce
cancers are very similar (Ruddon, 1995). The human body consists of over 30 trillion cells, living in a
complex, interdependent harmony. They regulate each other s proliferation; normal cells reproduce ...

Proto oncogenes induce cell growth and reproduction, while tumor suppressor genes inhibit it.
Together, they carefully control the proliferation of cells. However, if a proto oncogene is mutated, it
can become a carcinogenic oncogene, driving excessive multiplication. Tumor suppressor genes, on
the other hand, contribute to cancer when they are inactivated by mutation (Ruddon, 1995).
Luckily, cancerous tumors are not caused by one little mutation in one cell they are caused by multiple
mutations in a number of the cell s growth controlling genes. The number of mutations necessary can
be as low as two or quite high, depending on the specific type of cancer. Generally, these mutations
occur either from mistakes during cell reproduction, or due to DNA damage caused by carcinogens
such as tobacco, certain poisons, and UV rays. So, why don t we all get cancer from these things right
away? Consider that one of your cells is damaged by poison and becomes mutated. In order for this
cell to turn into a cancer cell, the rest of the necessary mutations must also occur in this very same
cell. This in itself, is fairly unlikely. It normally takes decades for an incipient tumor to collect all the
mutations required for it s malignant growth, which explains why the average age for cancer diagnosis
is 67 (Ruddon, 1995). Why, then, do some individuals

E.L. Doctorow s novel Ragtime is a story involving certain characters, each trying to find his or her

he gives to the reader from the very beginning of the novel is the American dream. Many characters
throughout the novel individually take diverse journeys in order to fulfill what they might describe as
The American Dream. Throughout Ragtime several characters venture upon momentous journeys

As Doctorow states, He wandered through the house finding everywhere signs of his own exclusion.
His son now had a desk, as befitted all young students. He thought he heard an Arctic wind but it was
the housemaid Brigit pushing an electric suction cleaner across the rug in the parlor (109). Father s
treasures brought home from his expedition, are not perceived as valuable or even desirable to his
family: He pulled Arctic treasures from his trunk...incredible treasures in the North, but here in the
parlor the embarrassing possessions of a savage. The family stood around and watched him on his
knees. There was nothing he had for them (110). Father is embarrassed by his family s response and
lack of interest. Father is struggling to reconcile the dream he left behind and the dream he pursued
but does not accomplish. As the book progresses, Father grows increasingly distant from his family. At
one point in the novel Father realizes he is no longer attracted to mother in a lustful way, most likely
symbolizing the increasing separation he is experiencing from his family. As the narrator details, Once
accustomed to life together after his return from the Arctic, they had slipped into an undemanding
companionship in which he felt bypassed by life, like a spectator at an event (216). Father s quest for

The time of pure innocence in other words, childhood. When I visualize my childhood, I can hear faint
laughter in the distance and I feel serenity wash over me. Moments of memories flash through my
eyes like a movie, I can still feel the swelling happiness that grew within my chest. The smell of
outside that I wore as a perfume. Imagination taking me away to the vast open oceans on a huge pirate
ship as I sword fought my opponent inevitably making him walk the plank, or slipping through an
obstacle of lasers that I need to get past in order to complete my top secret mission. Living in my
house that is outlined in chalk on the driveway and pretending to be an adult, or at least what I thought
being an adult is. My biggest protector against evil monsters that lurked in the darkness is my brave
and noble teddy bear, he is so intimidating that every monster cowered in his presence. I remember
when I fell asleep in the car after a very eventful night only to magically wake up in my bed snuggled
in my blanket. I remember being so excited for what tomorrow may bring that I couldn t sleep. The
scent of peppermint and pine tree drifted all over the house. Bright lights covered houses and trees, the
feeling of jolly strong enough to grace everyone with the feeling. The whole house would help
decorate the tree and whatever other decorations my mom would want to be put up, as she took

5. Tokugawa Period Research Paper

History of Japan
Essay topic 2
Meiji Period:
The fall of the Tokugawa and the ushering in of a new era of modernization and prosperity for Japan
The 1800s were a time of great exploration and revelation for much of the Western world. Ideas and
inventions flowed easily throughout the major powers of the world with the help of new powerful
ships. It was also a great time for exploration and new trade opportunities for expanding countries
such as the United States of America, the Asian trading routes were rich with possibility. One of the
most desired countries was that of Japan. For nearly 250 years, the Tokugawa period of Japan was one
of isolation and extreme distrust of foreigners and foreign ideas. Due to this, ... Show more content on

Previously, Japan was split into my different sections each controlled by daimyo. This system caused a
lot of infighting between powers and made unification very difficult. The young Meiji government
realized this problem also and set out to fix it. One of the key issues of the Tokugawa and the periods
before it was Japan was very difficult to unify military and politically. Each clan often fought for
dominance and each manned their own military s with appointed daimyo. This system of feudal
domains made it nearly impossible for a proper political system. Meiji and his advisors, with the goal
of unification and centralization, quickly addressed this issue and by July 1869 the feudal lords had
been requested to give up their domains, and in 1871 these domains were abolished and transformed
into prefectures of a unified central state. (3) This accomplishment of a unified central state led to
many positive things that helped Japan modernize. Foremost, the creation of a unified army that was
once not previously possible. After the fall of the domains in 1871, the Meiji government enacted a
national army based on universal conscription was created in 1872. (3) This was an enormous change
as it not only made a national army but also made commoner and samurai serve besides each other
equally. The abolishment of the feudal domain system also allowed Japan to

6. Roman Catholic And Mexican Immigrants Essay
Since the United States was created, immigrant groups have been discriminated against due to their
religious, ethnic, and/or national origin backgrounds. Possessive investment in whiteness has operated
throughout all this time by keeping privileges and resources to certain groups and defining whiteness
through the exclusion of others (Lipsitz 4). Through this process of exclusion negative discursive
formations have been created around immigrant groups and impacted their levels of assimilation. As a
result, there have been many discriminatory practices against immigrants throughout history with
variations in how that discrimination is carried out (Dinnerstein and Reimers 104). The two main
immigrant groups I am going to focus on are Roman Catholic and Mexican immigrants. In the
beginning of American history (and throughout), there has existed a sentiment against Roman Catholic
immigrants. Dinnerstein and Reimers give the example of John Adams letter to his wife reflecting his
negative perceptions of Roman Catholics and their practices, these same thoughts were shared by
many other Americans at the time (17 18). As a result of these perceptions, Roman Catholics were
discriminated against and often kept from exercising their right to vote during colonial America. Not
being allowed to vote and consequently, not being able to be heard in society intentionally keeps
immigrant groups from assimilating into the dominant culture because they are not able to contribute

Description of the major thrust of family centered practice
According to Sandau Beckler (2001), the primary drive of family centered practice is customer
empowerment . She defined empowerment as the process of negotiating or eliminating barriers to
problem solving imposed by external society (p. 86). Moreover, she elaborated that the therapist
should present the customer with prospects that would result in empowerment. Similarly, Cohen

8. Waiting for Godot
Waiting For Godot By Samuel Beckett Nothing happens. Nobody comes, nobody goes. It s awful.
How far do you agree? Initially written in French in 1948 as En Attendant Godot , Samuel Beckett s
play was first staged in 1952, in Paris. It represents one of the most important movements of the
twentieth century and is an example of the so called Theatre of the Absurd , which had subsequently
inspired numerous plays that were based on the idea of an illogical universe. The plot of the play is
fairly simple and is, in fact, purely a development of its title. Its description is rather ambiguous, for
while one may think that no action whatsoever takes place throughout the play, another might suppose
otherwise. Principally, the story includes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

these verbs are included in the play, for they give us the illusion of reality on the stage. However, far
from that, the vagabonds are simply emblems of despair. These religious beliefs prevail in the play,
placing faith under the spotlight of doubt. It is a scandalous topic, but it is presented in a somewhat
naive manner: Estragon and Vladimir themselves hardly known what Christianity is; they consider the
Biblical story an anecdote, for they know nothing of it. Beckett seems to doubt the necessity of
religion without the basic knowledge of biblical myths, which, in our days, is a highly common
occurrence. Nonetheless both Estragon and Vladimir believe in the existence of Godot, whose prophet
descended seven skies to deliver a message. They do question his identity and distrust his facelessness
and Estragon at times is ready to quit the worthless act of waiting, but scolded by Vladimir, remains
immobile. Estragon: I cannot seem to depart. Estragon can see the logic of renouncing this lifestyle

9. Ethnic Minorities In Turkey
Ethnic minorities around the world remain to face significant and major barriers to social mobility and
equal opportunities and resources. One of the main risks that almost all minority groups face is being
driven away from their land and deprived from their natural resources, which are vital and essential
for their livelihood. In addition to systematic inequity, members of ethnic minorities can face day to
day discrimination which can cause them to feel less welcome and accepted. Uyghur muslims in
China and Kurds in Turkey illustrate and represent the problems faced by ethnic minorities, and how
such problems have played an important role leading to political stability and a violation of human
rights within a nation. In China, the Uyghur Muslim ethnic group is found the predominantly muslim
province of Xinjiang, in the far eastern part of China (refer to Appendix A, Figure 1). They are of
Turkic descendancy, speak a language that is largely related to Turkish and regard themselves to be
very culturally and ethnically close to neighbouring Central Asian populations. This is where
controversy begins to occur. Prior to the 18th century, the region that s now Xinjiang had an
intermittent autonomy and periodic independence. However, during the 18th century, the region came
under the Chinese rule, and became officially part of Communist China in 1949 shortly after the
formation of an East Turkmenistan State which included the region of Xinjiang but was largely short
lived. As

The world record small mouth weighed 11 pounds and 15 ounces. Was 27 inches long and 21 2/3
inches in girth. Most smallmouth range from 10 inches up to 20. Bass over 20 inches are rare but a lot
of fun to catch. A good healthy temperature for small mouth is between 68 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Normally bass live between 6 to 14 years, but with perfect conditions a bass can live up to 20 years.
Small mouth like to create nests with their tails in 3 to 8 feet of water, with sand and small gravel for a
bottom. The male will create and guard the nest. After mating the female is evicted and goes on to

Smallmouths have both external fertilization and external development. Feeding for smallmouth tops
when the temperature is around 78 degrees and starts to slow down once the temperature goes below

usually occurs in April or May unless the temperature stays cold than it can be delayed. The first
person to describe a smallmouth bass was Lacepede is 1802. The fry hatch out of their eggs in about a
week and then continue to develop for another week. Young smallmouths are fed upon by yellow
perch, Northern pike or muskellunge. Bigger bass are only eaten by northern pike, musky but the main
predators of smallmouth bass are humans. The lifespan in the wild is normally about seven years, but
some will live up to 20 years. In captivity the average age is ten years. When the young hatch out of
their eggs they are about 0.2 inches long, very easy prey for a variety of animals. Multiple females
will spawn in the nest of one male and an individual female will spawn in more than one. Smallmouth
dance and bite each other, this is their mating ritual. In New York the record smallmouth was 8
pounds, 4 ounces caught out of Lake Erie on 6/4/1995 by Andrew C Kartesz. Smallmouth bass are

11. Identity in House Made of Dawn Essay
Identity in House Made of Dawn
In 1969 N. Scott Momaday won the Pulitzer Prize for his phenomenal work, House Made of Dawn.
The novel addresses the issue of identity, how it can be lost as well as recovered. Momaday offers
insightful methods of recovering or attaining one s identity. Momaday once made the following now
famous statement:
We are what we imagine. Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves. Our best destiny
is to imagine, at least, completely, who and what, and that we are. The greatest tragedy that can befall
us is to go unimagined (Owens, 93).

The path to imagination and identity lies in those things that show us who we are, that heal and make
us whole, and that promote order and reality. Throughout House Made of Dawn, two of Momaday s
methods to attaining identity reveal themselves to be, on this same path, running and stories. These
methods are not separate, but intermingle and cross over one another at different times. Ultimately,
through the utilization of these methods, one can gain a sense of identity and the ability to imagine
oneself. At the novel s ending, this is exactly what Abel does.
In the second paragraph of the prologue, Abel is running. The prologue begins with Abel running and
ends with Abel running. The prologue, in a mythic time and place, tells the story, and how it will end,
in accordance with traditional storytelling. (Owens, 96). We, the reader, know that Abel with find
himself by the novel s end. However, what is important, is the way the story is told (Owens, 96). Thus,
in finding running at the beginning and ending of the prologue, one can infer that running must be
important to identity, because only when Abel has his sense of identity does he run. The portion of the
novel following the prologue proves this to be true throughout. Owens says that for the Jemez Pueblo,
the native community and culture in which the novel is set, running can have serious ceremonial
applications and that

Independent of the genome screens, evidence suggests that the region on chromosome 15q11 13
contains a gene or genes relevant to Autism. (Dr. David Pauls 2003). Basically, there are suggestions
that the chromosome 15q11 13 is somehow mutated, deleted, or duplicated, causing this disorder to
transpire. In addition to genetics, environmental factors can influence Autism; though they are not
greatly supported ideas, they can t be entirely ruled out. In the UK there have been reports of the
measles vaccine having a part in causing this disorder. (Dr. David Pauls 2003). Newer studies have

traffic lights to direct traffic. How Morgan thought of this was when he witnessed a horrible car crash
leaving a poor girl in critical condition. With his Morgan s don t stop attitude and creativity, Morgan

14. Analysis Of On Habit And Adam Gopnik
It s not unusual to witness how people when faced with the same situation form different perceptions.
These perceptions are shaped by our mindsets and their interaction with our surroundings. The kind of
action that occurs as two or more objects be it living or non living have an effect upon one another is
called interaction. The idea of a two way effect is essential in the concept of interaction and also how
much we interact and to what degree is also influenced by multiple factors. Both Alain de Botton, the
author of On Habit and Adam Gopnik, the author of Bumping into Mr., Ravioli talk about our
interaction with our environment and how different mindset perspectives affect this interaction. Both
de Botton and Gopnik observe how we become blind to our surroundings be it the place we live or the
people we live with because we are too busy . We have a set of beliefs, powerful incentives called
mindsets that directly or indirectly affect our behavior towards others and our perception about the
world and these mindsets affect our interaction with the environment. I believe, with the world
becoming more interconnected instead of interacting more we have stopped interacting at all. We don t
exchange intimacies be it with people or things in our surroundings. Our mindset now days is such
that it forces us to work like machines giving us little or no time to imagine, think and interact. In this

A Public Service Announcement (PSA) can help reduce the number of distracted driving accidents by
explaining the horrible effects of distracted driving and the best ways to prevent distracted driving.
Currently, the main source of distracted driving is cell phones. Cell phones cause a person to text, call,
and use social media while driving; all factors that can be a deadly distraction while driving. A cell
phone causes much distraction for the driver and may cause the driver to have a car crash that not only
affects themselves, but also the surrounding people. As a community, we should be educating people
about distracted driving in order to prevent the problem and decrease the number of accidents. Public
Service Announcements are important as they provide people with evidence, resources to limit
distraction while driving, and helpful/important information. Teenagers, children, and even adults will
be able to be informed. Even though educating people through a Public Service Announcement is
important, it might not be viewed by most people and will not be effective towards the younger
viewers. Teenagers and even adults might dismiss a Public Service Announcement because the
announcement does not grab their attention or because the person might not care.

17. The Origin Of Australian Music
Australian Aborigines are native to Australia and have lived in a territory called the Arnhem Land or
northern Australia for almost forty thousand years. Some of the Aborigines live in government
housing today, while others still live among the land as their ancestors did. Aborigines are an ethnic
group that also has many religious beliefs. They believe in Animism which is the belief that living
creatures and the outside environment contain supernatural powers. Their culture and beliefs resonate
in their music. Their belief in Animism is reflected in the rhythms that they use that originate in the
environment. Another part of Australian music that is characteristic of that country is the use of the
didjeridu. This instrument has become a symbol of Australian music and has a rich history in the
ethnic music that the Aborigines play. It is also made and performed by these native people in very
unique ways. The history of Australian music would not be complete without highlighting the
importance of the didjeridu. Some believe that Aborigines have been playing the didjeridu for up to
forty thousand years. However, most historians believe that the didjeridu dates back about fifteen
hundred to two thousand years because of the cave art that the Aborigines have left behind. These cave
drawings consist of figures playing a didjeridu. The didjeridu is believed to be first constructed in

a person look for when they are deciding to buy a computer or other electronic device? Does it matter
the color, size, or memory space available? No. I believe people look at computers and base them on
stability, accuracy, and speed. Choosing between a tablet, laptop, or desk top computer I would be
more than comfortable to say I would choose a Laptop. I believe that technology and computers are so
important to us because, it gives us mobility to communicate with the rest of the world and get any
type of news at the touch of a finger tip. In my paper I will compare and contrast some of today s top

In the novel, Mark Twain uses diction and language to achieve more authentic characters. The

20. Analysis Of Le Mot Juste In The Awakening By Kate Chopin
Le mot juste, the perfect word, can be used in any novel and the perfect phrase can be used to
summarize any novel. Within the novella The Awakening by Kate Chopin, it traverses many themes of
oppression, transcendentalism, and women s rights. It is about a woman named Edna awakening from
the stupor placed by society. There are many notable phrases about the state of women s rights with
many themes and connections. The one that stands out, or rather the lack of it makes it the perfect
phrase to summarize the novel. Within the pages of chapter 17 lies the sentence But her small boot
heel did not make an indenture, not a mark upon the little glittering circlet (Chopin 52). At first glance
this sentence is an average length describing the impact of an event, an afterthought and effect to a
climax or conflict. Even the sentence is located is between 3 notable moments between the ruined
dinner with Mr. Pontellier, the stamping of her wedding ring and the violent crashing of the vase. This
sentence is insignificant compared to the surrounding sentences, only describing the her lack of effect
on the wedding ring. Just as the brightest flame casts the darkest shadow, a supporting sentence will

Decisions, Decisions
We all have seen how in the movies, the main characters decide to take on the situation presented in
front of them. Some of would think I would of have it differently, or ask why would you do that?
These actions can be defined through the term Utilitarianism. In detail, on Utilitarianism, it is a theory
in which it is a concern action that will result the utmost amount of pleasure, or happiness, to the vast
numbers of persons. (pg.138) In the most part, Utilitarianism can be connected with Consequentialism

A..B..C.. You Better Get to Stereotyping
One thing you can t live with or without, teachers and stereotypes. We hear them everyday and
everywhere. Stereotypes are natural human flaws widely known and particularly pointed at a certain
person or group. Different types of people can be stereotyped in many various ways. Sometimes the
way we are stereotyped is incorrect and other times we may actually fit the description.
Misconceptions are also used as a form of viewing people. Even though there is a small difference
between the two, they still have criticism as a common ground. Stereotyping is a part of everyone s
everyday life whether you stereotype or are being stereotyped. We all have stereotypes and
misconceptions whether we know it or not. You don t need a credential to stereotype, but you do need
one to be a teacher.
There are moments when you aren t so fond of the idea of making new friends and meeting new

The 18th amendment of the constitution Prohibition was introduced to all American states apart from
Maryland in 1920. Prohibition was the banning of alcohol; you could be arrested for sale, manufacture
and transportation of alcohol. There were many factors that influenced the introduction of prohibition.
One of the main factors was the temperance movement s two examples of this Were the anti saloon
league and Women s Christian temperance movement. The temperance movements were at the
strongest in rural areas, they put pressure on state governments to introduce prohibition. They put
pressure on them by claiming the Damage to drinker s health. They also protested that the sale in

There was a man named John Barleycorn that died from drinking too much alcohol. After that more
people began thinking that drinking alcohol was very dangerous and that it would cause diseases.
There also was a man named Dr. Benjamin Rush. He was a well known physician. He also wrote a
book in 1784, which taught that drinking little amounts of wine and beer would not harm you very
much, but drinking rum and whisky would cause death and diseases. Congress voted and approved of
the amendment in January 1919, and enacted it in to law as the National Prohibition Act of 1920. After
the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, Congress had to make a maximum amount of alcohol that
beverages could contain. They then passed the Volstead Act. This act was far more severe than anyone
expected. The Act put the maximum alcoholic content at 0.05 percent. By comparison, today s beers
have between 4 and 6 percent alcohol, 100 times more than the Volstead Act allowed. Whiskey had
around 50 percent alcohol (Noble). Most people were very shocked at how low the act actually put the
alcohol limit. A Literary Digest poll taken in 1922 found that 40 percent of respondents favored
allowing light beer and wine. The poll also found that 62 percent of working men favored lenient
enforcement of prohibition (Noble). Prohibition was a main topic of discussion for politics.

24. The Id, Ego and Superego Shown in Frankenstein and Dr....
Frankenstein: the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson both show Freud s ideas of Id, Ego and Superego as well as of innate
desire. Frankenstein: the Modern Prometheus shows Freud s stages of psychosexual development.
Collectively both novels should be considered Freudian through these ideas. Jekyll and Hyde works as
a symbolic portrayal of the goodness and evil that resides in equal measure within the soul of a man. It
pre empted Freudian psychoanalysis by twenty five years and yet is similar to some of his theories. In
Frankenstein both the monster and Victor exemplify Freud s developmental stages.

Despite saying this Jekyll still succumbs to his Id and Hyde is drawn out again. Jekyll knows of the
evil that comes out when he transforms into Hyde. Jekyll says This, as I take it, was because all
human beings, as we meet them are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde alone in the
ranks of mankind, was pure evil (Stevenson 108). Here Jekyll clearly states that he knows Hyde is evil
yet he still cannot overpower his Id and then his Superego is overcome. By turning into Hyde, Jekyll
feels free and can do whatever he wants without the slightest hesitation. Following his innate desires
Hyde murders Sir Danvers Carew and tramples a young girl. These actions are done through the Id
and even though Jekyll is civilized law abiding man once the Id has taken over and he transforms into
Hyde, his dark side is unleashed. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are but one; one body but two conflicting
characters, the good and evil. In Frankenstein: the Modern Prometheus we see the monster as the
outward expression of Victor s Id or his demoniacal passions. Freud believed that personality develops
through a series of childhood stages during which the pleasure seeking energies of the id become
focused on certain behaviors. These childhood stages are known as the psycosexual developmental
stages.

Italian immigrants were not welcomed with open arms into the land of opportunity. They had to adapt
to the new lifestyle without forgetting theirs. Throughout the years, American citizens would be
accustomed to having foreigners living in their neighborhoods. The Italian immigrants established
communities where they managed to keep la via vecchia alive.
The American population viewed the Italian immigrants as an inferior race. People who made rude
comments about Italians specifically directed it to them and made sure they knew. They still regard
Italian Americans as racially inferior dagos , wops, guineas, and greasers. 1 Like most immigrants that
migrated to the Land of Liberty at the time, Italian immigrants were seen as foreigners to those that
were born and raised in America. Particularly, Italian immigrants were placed at the lowest level of the
economy and social class. The American population viewed them as uneducated people who were
destined to be laborers. There were people that despise the idea of immigrants coming to the United
States and there is no space for them. America for Americans should be the motto of every citizen. 2
They were not needed because they were unskilled and uneducated. Thus, the American population
never sought to treat foreigners with respect. First, second, and third generations had to live with

Catalysts are a great example of source reductions because they provide energy in a reaction without
changing the process. By lowering the temperature of the reaction and altering the pressure used they
reduce energy. Ideally, they can be used indefinitely meaning that no product is going to waste, this
means that our environment and health would be benefited greatly due to the absence of waste. Unlike
stoichiometric reagents, catalysts do not generate waste, give more control on reaction such as
reducing unwanted side products and can carry out a reaction more than once, increasing efficiency of

28. Triceps Tendinitis With Rehab Assignment Essay
Triceps Tendinitis With Rehab
Triceps tendinitis is inflammation of the triceps tendon, which is located behind the elbow. The triceps
tendon is a strong cord of tissue that connects the triceps muscle, on the back of the upper arm, to a
bone in the elbow (ulna). The triceps muscle helps to bend and straighten the elbow. Triceps tendinitis
can interfere with your ability to do both of these movements. This condition is usually caused by
overuse of the triceps muscle or injury to the upper arm. In most cases, triceps tendinitis heals within 6
weeks.
Triceps tendinitis may include a grade 1 or grade 2 strain of the tendon. A grade 1 strain is mild, and it
involves a slight pull of the tendon without any stretching or noticeable tearing of the tendon. There is
usually no loss of triceps muscle strength. A grade 2 strain is moderate, and it involves a small tear in
the tendon. The tendon is stretched and triceps strength is usually decreased.
CAUSES
This condition may be caused by:
Overuse of the triceps muscle.
A direct, forceful hit or injury (trauma) to the triceps tendon.
RISK FACTORS
This condition is more likely to develop in:
People who participate in sports or activities that require sudden tightening (contraction) of the triceps
muscle, such as biking or motorcycle riding.
People who participate in sports that involve moving the arm against resistance, such as weightlifting
or bodybuilding.
People who have poor strength and flexibility of the

Using these three articles (or more), you should tell the story of the discovery and developmental
function (including the relevant signaling pathway)
One of your additional papers should concern the discovery of the function of the gene in humans (i.e.
the human mutant phenotype)
Introduction
Achondroplasia is when cartilage during development is not developed into bone, which results in
dwarfism. This condition also characterized by short limbs is initiated by a gain of function mutation
in the FGFR3 gene. This mutation is a point mutation. When this mutation occurs, the receptor of the
FGF does not need the FGF signal to be activated. This causes the chondrocytes to stop dividing and
start differentiating into cartilage prematurely and the bones fail to grow to their proper length, thus
resulting in the short limbs that result from this mutation. (textbook) The FGFR3 gene encodes for the

FGFR3 through the use of homologous genes of other FGFRs. Regions such as the kinase domain and

used a human cDNA library which was hybridized in low stringency. Then under high stringency, a
partial FGFR3 clone was used as a probe. The DNA was cloned using dideoxynucleotide chain
termination method. A mutation in the FGFR3 gene causes a premature activation of the STAT
pathway which also leads to the premature production of phoshorylated Stat1 protein. The
phophorylated Stat1 protein encodes genes for cell cycle inhibition, these leads to a decreased number

across the world because there is essentially less risk associated with it. Due to the attractiveness of
piracy, there has been an overall trend of a drastically increasing amount of pirate attacks and
attempts. In the year 2000, worldwide piracy attacks that were reported to the International Maritime
Bureau totaled 469 separate incidents, which was an increase of 56% when compared to the previous
year s figures (Rosenberg). This graph by David Rosenberg visually depicts this trend of an
exponential increase in piracy reporting from 1978 2000: Although laws do exist, such as the U.S. Led
Resolution 1851, that deem piracy illegal and authorize states and governments to take action against
pirate attacks, they have been very ineffective in deterring pirate attacks (Alessi, 2012). As the
government led initiatives are ineffective in preventing piracy from occurring, ship owners are faced
with very tough ethical decisions when determining how to mitigate risk associated with pirate
attacks. Many of the questions they face tackle issues of whether or not to reroute their shipments to
avoid the pirating hot spots, how they can best train and protect their crew to keep them safe, and if

Time is essential to living in the universe. Time is the idea that with every second that passes, will be
unique. In The Great Gatsby, Nick is an epistemic narrator. This means that he is flashing back to this
time in his life where he lived in West Egg and had a neighbor by the name of Gatsby. This novel also
withholds the characteristics of Gatsby s axiological narrative. Both of these narrative modalities are
critical to the reader and further understanding of the novel.
Nick is an epistemic narrator which means he is reflecting on a certain situation. An epistemic
narrative can sometimes seem to create a mystery in how it s written. The key to an epistemic narrator
is a sustained, communal acquisition of knowledge not associated with a time variable. Throughout
this novel we are getting short pieces of the story marked through time. At nine o clock one morning
late in July... (Ch 4. Pg 63). And Nick does this again in chapter five when he states Two o clock and
the whole corner of the peninsula was blazing with light... (Ch 5. Pg 81). In both of these instances he
sets the scene with a certain time he remembers. Nick as the epistemic narrator not only selects
chapters four through six to use this type of time sense of the setting, but he does it for the rest of the
novel as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
