Cornell University did an experiment with a setup that they called a visual cliff. The visual cliff was
made of a board laid across a large sheet of heavy glass. They put a patterned sheet right up against
the glass on one side and left it lower on the other side. This was used to test the behavior of infants
and young animals. The psychological concept in this paper was to see if young children and animals
are aware of height perception. They found out that most human infants can discriminate depth as
soon as they can crawl. The experiments were done to see if infants and young animals were born with
depth perception or when they could visually predict the depth of different things. By creating the
visual cliff and setting babies and animals on it.They were able to study the behavior and see if they
prefered the shallow side or the deep side. Toward the end of the paper they were doing experiments

In recent years politicians and foundations have focused attention on the large numbers of students
who begin college but never finish. More than 40 percent of full time starting students fail to complete
within six years, and more than 70 percent of community college students fail to complete within three
years (NCES 2012). Whether or not these rates are a sign of a problem, it remains true that the nation
would gain the benefit of more college graduates if policies could be identified that would
substantially increase graduation rates, assuming the increase does not come with a reduction in
standards or a problematic shift in majors. The goal of this paper is to apply theories regarding
behaviors and cognitive biases to the task of improving college outcomes. We start by making some
simplifying assumptions about the motivations of college students in order to pinpoint relevant
barriers to student progress. This allows us to tap the research literature for strategies to consider
applying, including altering incentives. In the second section, we discuss behaviors to which these
strategies can be applied, and we describe some approaches that could be considered. The point of
college is to create independent and self motivated learners. The reader should be warned that the lists
of possible experiments, when reviewed en masse, can create a disturbing specter of students being

event. The following essay discusses this ritual in two parts, firstly examining Turner s discussion of
Rites of Passage and ritual particularly Separation, liminality and Aggregation themes. Secondly the
essay will suggest what this particular ritual does for identity and community and suggest that rituals,

discussion is useful in illuminating aspects of this ritual, however it does not accurately explain all of

The textbook, Portrait of America: Volume 2, 10th Edition, organized by co authors, Stephen B. Oates
and Charles J. Errico, is supplied with various historical topics written by different, credible authors.
The textbook is, indeed, worth the time to read and understand. The authors express historical people
and events many people have heard of, and expands the reader s mind with personal stories and
unconventional facts, one has not heard of. Most textbooks offer concise information about a person
or event; Portrait of America authors take an unorthodox approach by stating information as well as
revealing their own perspective on the topic. Such a technique as this is unfamiliar to the average
student. Though an unconventional method, the authors are most effective at distributing information
to the reader. Topics covered such as presidents, women, and events that changed America hold
significance to the theory, Portrait of America authors take an idiosyncratic yet superb approach to
delivering information to the reader. In Portrait of America chapter 9, Theodore Roosevelt, President,
British American author Edmund Morris begins the chapter in a strange and unfamiliar way; stating
Theodore Roosevelt s faults. A successful attempt at humor to captivate the attention of the reader,
claiming Roosevelt made rude faces while passing boys on the streets of Washington (94). Morris s

St Louis Brass Concert Report
This past Thursday, I attended the fourth event in the Presidential concert series. The guest musicians
were the wonderful quintet, Saint Louis Brass. They articulately play each note to create a melodious
combination with their two trumpets, french horn, trombone, and tuba. During their set, they played a
variety of antiqued classics, modern edgy pieces, and smooth jazz. Saint Louis Brass began their set
with a harmonious, traditional 1600s tune. I was amazed at how well all the sounds from the brass
instruments melded together. Before hand, when I thought of brass instruments, especially trumpets, I
thought of the sharp notes often played in jazz; however, the smooth sounds from the five instruments
infiltrated the room, completely filling my body with a calm peace. The musicians sat, fully engaged
in the music that buzzed from their lips. I really enjoy this antiquated piece of music far more than I
anticipated. The next song, called Four Times Five, was quite different from the first. Written by a

Many of the musicians double as professors at different universities; therefore, their knowledge of the
history of brass instruments is quite extensive. First, they played different sized conch shells, which is
the first horns that formed into the song Happy Birthday.They then played many of the earliest models
of the trumpet, which had no valves, and the trombone, that required one to move their whole body

Brakes have been around for a few years, and only a couple different types of brakes can be
manufactured. The two classifications of brakes are disc brakes and drum brakes. Drum brakes are an
older type of brake that uses springs and levers to apply brake pads to the wheels. Disc brakes are a
newer type of brake that uses a piston and an O ring to apply pressure to the brake pads. Which in turn
creates friction to a rotor that is bolted to the wheel, whereas drum brakes only apply pressure to the
wheel (Stockel, Auto Service 714). These brakes have been used in many different vehicles as well as
used in trailers and motorcycles. Disc brakes are seen in most cars today throughout the world; though
