Life After St. Jerome s Indian Horse Novel Study
Life after St. Jerome s: Indian Horse Novel Study For years, First Nations children endured the
harrowing experiences of residential schools. It was not until 1996, did the final residential school
close down. It took over a hundred years of physical, physiological, and the sexual abuse of
thousands of children before residential schools existed no more. Although they do not exist
anymore, residential schools continue to cause pain throughout First Nationscommunities. There are
a variety of novels that describe the accounts of residential school survivors, both fiction and non
fiction, each powerful in their own way. Indian Horse, a novel by Richard Wagamese, is one of
these novels. The book follows Saul Indian Horse, a boy of Ojibwe descent, and his experiences
within St. Jerome s Indian Residential School. Saul turns to hockey as a form of protection
from the fowl memories of his experiences at St. Jerome s, using the game to ignore the sexual
abuse he endured. This denial results in Saul s pain, which comes out in the form anger on the
ice, and which ultimately results in him taking up alcohol. It is only when Saul returns to St.
Jerome s, that he is able to stop the denial, and begin his path to healing. Richard manages to lead
the reader down the same path of denial as Saul, therefore allowing the reader to experience the
same feeling of shock as felt by Saul in his moments of realization. Saul s denial of his sexual abuse

Devil Facial Tumor Disease
ast week, my group and I were given various pieces of information about the Tasmanian Devil. We
had the task of finding out exactly what had caused the scarring and marks on their faces; and
could only use the information that was provided to us in folders.
After several days of making many new discoveries about the devils, my group and I concluded
that the markings on the devil s faces were mainly due to the Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD).
As an oncologist, I was quite aware that tumors and cancer were not contagious and could not be
passed to another organism through any form of contact. Through this information, it did not make
sense that this tumor disease would be spreading throughout a whole region, and eliminating a
population so rapidly. I was aware that cancer could be caused by many factors, including: aging,
tobacco, radiation, sun exposure, viruses, and chemicals; all of which cause cancer through
manipulating cells. Cancerous cells are very different from regular cells, and are irregularly shaped,
have a high nucleus to cytoplasm ratio, and often times have ... Show more content on

This idea went against all of my previous research, and left me quite puzzled; how could cancer
suddenly be contagious and only affecting this one species? My group and I then proceeded to read
about the history of the Tasmanian Deviland how it had at one point become extinct in Australia,
and only found in Tasmania, hence its name. Through this migration of a whole species and the
extinction of all of the devils in other regions, the devils soon got a low genetic diversity. All of
the devil s in the region have similar cells, and are practically all related as they all stem from the
same original devil and therefore, their bodies are not able to recognize cancerous cells which in
turn creates the large scarring and tumors on their

Summary Of Lizard By Lucius Sims
Consistently through Lucius Sims life, he is made fun of for looking different, much like how
people are bullied today. Throughout the book, Lizard, Lucius Sims is portrayed by the author,
Dennis Covington, as a mentally challenged person, and he contributes to the theme of
overcoming bullying. Because of his facial features, Lucius Sims is portrayed as a mentally
challenged kid , and is sent off to a school for boys, like him. Lucius, or better known as Lizard,
got his name, and was placed in the school he is in due to his, ...eyes more on the side of his head
than most people s and a nose that lies on its side... (Covington 6). Lizard got his name and was
placed in the mentally challenged school for boys due to how the author portrayed him, which was
as a special child. This shows that looks can change anything and everything, just by how the
author portrays them. And because the author gave Lucius the facial features he did, people
thought of Lucius to be someone he really wasn t, and Lucius was bullied because of it.... Show

When Lucius goes exploring at his school, someone comes up to him and says, How d you get to
be so ugly Lizard? (Covington 58). Lizard was bullied all his life due to his facial features, but is
too depressed to defend himself. But that same day, Lizard decides that he had enough of the
bullying and says, I don t want to hear about it (Covington 60). Once Lizard finally accepts the
fact that people won t stop judging and bullying him for the way he looks, he stands up for
himself, which ultimately makes everyone leave him alone. So, by standing up for himself, Lucius

The Vietnam War Was A Long And Costly Conflict
Causes if the Vietnam War
Before WWII Vietnam belonged to the French Empire but during the war, it was taken over by
the Japanese but since they were being defeated they retreated back to Japan. This gave the
chance to the Vietnamese people to create their own government led by Ho Chi Minh but at the
end of the war, the south was given back to the french while the north was led by the Chinese,
who was not communist at the time, so Ho Chi Minh lost all his power. When the Chinese pulled
out in 1946 the Ho Chi Minh party took over The Viet Minh and by October the French stated their
intention of reuniting back with north but it would all be under the french rule so the Viet Minh
prepared to fight back. War started in November 1946 where the ... Show more content on

The North Vietnamese army was supported by the Soviet Union, China and other communist allies
whereas the South Vietnamese army were supported by the United States, South Korea, Australia,
Thailand and other Anti communist countries. The Vietnamwar took place because North Vietnam
was fighting to unify Vietnam but the US intervened and helped the communist takeover. This was
part of a larger plan from the US to eliminate communism.
Major Significant Events:
The Spring Offensive
The 1975 Spring Offensive was a series of large offensive operations to force south Vietnam and
it s rallied back and eventually defeat the armed forces.and force the government to surrender.
After initial success, North Vietnam increased its attack and continued to push forward. This was
also the initial idea of the Easter offensive in 1972 but it failed due to strong US forces but due to
decreases in American military aid which was south Vietnam s main power the spring offensive
was successful. Unable to fight back and cope without the large US support south Vietnam
collapsed causing large numbers of casualties. South Vietnam s immediate action was to regroup its
forces and decrease the area that its troops had to defend, thereby surrendering space for time.

Avatar Imperialism
Money, military, death or subordinance, these are the main elements of imperialism. Imperialism,
the practice of extending a country s power and influence through diplomacy or military force, is
often thought of as negative because of the use of military force. The age of imperialism lasted
from 1870 1914. One example of imperialismfrom this time period is when the countries Britain,
France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Spain all took control over different parts of Africa. One
movie that accurately portrays this ideal negatively is Avatar, a movie directed by James Cameron
and released on December 18, 2009. Avatar is about a group of ex military soldiers that travel to
Pandora, an alien life planet, and the elements of imperialism shown

Epigenetic Engineering Personal Statement
I was fascinated to discover that my namesake was the co discoverer of DNA, and, as a child, this
coincidence undoubtedly influenced my love of science. I followed the scientific developments of
the 21st century with interest particularly genome project research. My studies continue to direct
me towards this field: I want to be part of this on going scientific revolution, which is constantly
changing and influencing how we live our lives. My interest in biology grew with the IGCSE
course, especially its introduction to fundamental genetic engineering. Further inspired by the AS
syllabus, I broadened my knowledge by reading the New Scientist. Williams and Dunbar s recent
article raised a concept I hadn t considered before: that humans and... Show more content on

Such reading complemented my Extended Project Qualification: whether germ line gene therapy
can be a viable and ethical treatment for cystic fibrosis. Gene therapy is a controversial topic; my
EPQ has revealed to me the intense ethical debates that surround cutting edge science. Work
experience at Fujifilm Diosynth confirmed that research and practical lab work for biology and
chemistry is something I enjoy. The scientists gave me amazing opportunities to apply my
knowledge to situations, such as analysing optical density results taken from a running
bioreactor. I got to see the precision behind academic research and was taught laboratory skills
used in industry every day, including the use of gram staining to differentiate between bacterial
species, and SDS PAGE gels to separate proteins. Life at a molecular level particularly interests
me, as it combines chemistry and biology to explain concepts such as Systems Chemistry and the
origins of life. Why chemical reactions happen by J Keeler and P Wothers helped me to understand
these ideas, as well as complementing my A level chemistry course. I tested my chemistry and

more. Unsafe cultural practice consists of any action which destroys or deteriorate the overall health

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population across different parts of Australia have lower life
expectancy than mainstream Australians (approximately 10 years difference in lifespan between
indigenous and non indigenous people). Late diagnosis of disease is the most prominent, with
many indigenous people entering the end or terminal phase of illness before it is diagnosed

violent conflicts between colonisers, the introduction of new diseases and other civilians or non

Conditioned Emotional Response
A conditioned emotional response is seen in classical conditioning after a conditioned stimulus has
been paired with an emotion producing unconditioned stimulus. In other words it is an emotional
response that has been classically conditioned to occur to learned stimuli. Watson and Rayner
created this for the first time with little Albert when he was about eight months and twenty six days.
They struck a hammer against a suspended steel bar and at the third time was when little Albert
reacted and began to cry. The next time they tested a conditioned emotional response was when
little Albert was at the age of eleven months. They created this conditioned emotional response by
starting off the experiment with a white rat. At the beginning little

Kant And Morality
When talking about whether or not consequences of an act have anything to do with morality,
one must think of all the ways in which an individual s acts could be considered morally wrong.
Morality relates to conduct, whereas they both involve some type of action that is partaken by
the individual, which can be mistaken as being good even though the consequences are
considered bad (Dewey, 1891).When a person performs an action, and the outcome of that action
is a negative one, we often find ourselves blaming anything other than the individual themselves
because we believe they had no foresight on what was going to happen. Dewey describes that
when conduct and character are involved in telling if somebody is being moral, or immoral, we
are unable to say whether or not the action was good or bad until we know how that action turns
out and we know what the consequences are. (Dewey, 1891).
In order to decide whether or not a consequence of an action is morally good, or morally wrong,
one must first recognize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Duties and laws apply to an individual and their morality. Kant states that morality cannot be based
on man, we cannot base morality on experiences because morality is unconditioned. (Kant, 1998).
Metaphysical philosophy is pure, much as morality is unconditioned and pure. Metaphysics applies
to our efforts of understanding the world around us, it is independent from all experiences and
knowledge and applies to all, much as morality applies to all. Metaphysics cannot be compared to
the empirical because the empirical is based on our experiences, it is completely individual and
therefore cannot be applied to all morality. Kant states that you cannot understand practical morals
without metaphysics. (Kant, 1998). This is the basis of understanding whether or not Kant believes
consequences of an act have anything to do with

The King Of England
In 1776, all the 13 North American states controlled by the king of England. About half of
million people lived in the colonies. One of them is where my family and I lived. We lived at
one of the three greatest cities in the colonies, which is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have a
husband who owns a shop, and he sells many goods from local craftsmen and British goods. We
have our own children. One is a boy who just turned 16 and a baby girlwho is 10 months old. Our
home is where my husband s store is located at; we live upstairs with a living room, kitchen, one
bathroom, and one bedroom that we all share. Every day was very peaceful with no complaints
and no worries from the store until the king of England decided to make a stamp act, which is
giving taxes or extra money to any British supplies had. My husband was irritated to hear such
news, because he knows it was unfair to his customers, spending more money from items that
came from England, and the king decided to do whatever he wants to the new home as he thinks
he can rule the whole world. I kept convincing him to not to think about it so we cannot create a
problem against the British, but he refuses to listen my response. The next morning, I woke up and
got ready, got dressed, took my children to school. When I got back to the store, I entered the shop

The Sieve In Fahrenheit 451
Bradbury s title for part two of the story is the Sieve and the Sand. A sieve, also known as a
strainer is a tool used to strain or separate certain items, but in this story in takes on a much
deeper meaning. Bradbury s use of the sieve symbolizes the emptiness of their society, and this
is first alluded to in part one. Montag was eavesdrop on a conversation at Clarisse s house and a
man states, Well after all, this is the age of disposable tissue. Blow your nose on a person, wad
them, flush them away, reach for another ...Everyone using everyone else s coattails (Fahrenheit

demonstrating how their society simply uses each other for what they need and then discards them.

Montag describes a time in his childhood where he was sitting on a dune in the summer trying
to fill a sieve. His cousin offered him ten cents to fill the sieve with sand, the faster Montag tried
to fill the sieve, the faster it came flowing out the bottom (Fahrenheit 451, 74). Montag was
experiencing the same filling as he started to read books. The more he read the books and tried to
memorize the words in them, the more he realized he did not understand what he was reading or
could not remember the words at all. The sieve now symbolized Montag s struggle to gain the
knowledge and understanding from the books that he so desperately wanted, but the more books he
attempted to retain, the more he felt like he was forgetting, just like sand in a

The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual...
The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual or Hearing Impaired
Language is a means of communication that people use to interact with others in society.
Generally, language comprises vocal sounds to which meanings have been assigned by cultural
convention and often supplemented by various gestures. (Sharma, 30) For any normal person,
language is no longer viewed as a tool to acquire: language is placed as a standard and basic skill,
almost being considered given at birth. Such an idea about language is reasonable when taking into
account how the development of speech and language is acquired in early childhood. But as a rule,
such a standard and basic process of language development is only relevant to normal ... Show

Then, we consider difficulties that the blind and the deaf face in their communication and interaction
with others. Finally, after identifying the difficulties, we then focus on different technological
innovations and improvements that concentrate to ease such difficulties for the blind and the deaf,
thus providing them wider access and use of language especially in their everyday life.
First, let s consider the difference for people with visual and hearing impairments to acquire the
use of language in comparison to the standard and basic language development process. From
age 0 month to 6 months, babies typically learn most basic communicating language skills such
as crying and babbling to express different feelings they experiences. Also, they start to recognize
and look for familiar voices and sounds. (Oesterriech) The development of typical language
skills of children aging 0 to 6 months primarily depends on hearing. These language skills are
essentially responses to what children hear in their life. So it is presumably correct to state that
babies with hearing impairments suffer the most and pulled back on developing language skills
from this early on. A major drawback for deaf babies occur in the first year, for too often babies
hearing impairment is not diagnosed until babies are 12 months old. Such unawareness, sadly,
occurs too often for ninety percent of deaf

Elgin Marbles
The Elgin Marbles emulate a struggle of nations to come to agreeance over cultural heritage that
idolizes the context of visual sculptures. In the possession of the Britons, the Marbles reach a larger
demographic with the aim of the British Museum in educating for the public benefit. Thus, if not
removed from the Parthenonin the early 1800 s, further destruction to the priceless works of art
would have occurred. Although the marbles hold an imperial stigma in the British possession, the
creation of the Parthenon also distributed a national imperial value after the Athenian conquest of
the Persian Wars that in contrast is highly related to Britain in the period of acquisition. Culture
does not always belong only to the society that created... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned previously, there was rivalry between France and Britain in the search of antiquities
bringing military conflict to a war of culture. The British government was hesitant at first in the
purchase of the Elgin Marbles, but later came to a democratic vote of eighty two to thirty votes in
acquiring the Marbles for the nation. The Marbles are not distinctively Greek in the value of
cultural heritage in the consideration that Greece was not a sovereign nation at the time of
creation or acquisition. Thus the Indo European material must remain housed in Britain to
showcase not exclusively the British imperial power, but also the historical powers that resonate
in the Elgin Marbles. When first presented in London June 1807, by Lord Elgin people believed
the Marbles were, superior in style to everything else on earth , and in acquisition of the Marbles
the Periclean Athens acted as a British role model in the period of the Napoleonic Wars. The
Marbles of the Parthenon were created by the Athenians after the defeat of the Persians in 479 BCE
with the lead of Pericles who aimed in the advancement of art and culture through the making of the
Acropolis. The British Museum, in correspondence to the Acropolis, acts as an imperial centre that

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Masque Of The Red Death
In the same way, dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the characters do not,
which causes the reader to fear or dread what they suspect will happen. The first indication of
dramatic irony is in Masque of the Red Death when the black room with the blood red windows is
described. This description creates a bad feeling about the room and the reader senses something
bad will happen in that room. This idea is proven later when the Prince dies in that room. Another
example of dramatic ironyis demonstrated in Terrible Things when Bunting writes We have come

Themes Of The Sirens Of Titan
The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut , Why It is Great How It Affected My Ideas?
The Sirens of Titan was the third Kurt Vonnegut novel I read.
Books, to me, are meant to serve the purpose of creating an enlightened and timeless version of
ourselves. In this sense, The Sirens of Titan was, undoubtedly, the most astounding and
mesmerizing novel I have ever laid my eyes on. It poses a great significance for both my
personality and thoughts as it changed them drastically; therefore, I find The Sirens of Titan to be
the most influential piece of literature and the Magnum Opus amongst all of Kurt Vonneguts his
works. Kurt Vonnegut structures an elaborate plot in which he masterfully touches upon the great
themes of free will, luck, religion, and the actual meaning of life, all the while using a sarcastic yet
humanistic tone with an extensive symbolism in The Sirens of Titan. Moreover, the manipulation
of time structure, change of narrations, and premature/delayed revelations he exposes his readers
to, as chapters advance, constitutes the novel s genuine and idiosyncratical postmodern character.
He does all these maintaining his signature use of simplex syntax, metafiction, and hyperreality,
developed and supported by the interconnected literary universe he created through his writing
career. He is influenced, in my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

An Explication Of William Wordsworth s Tintern Abbey
An Explication of William Wordsworth s Tintern Abbey June 13, 1798 . In the poem Lines
Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey on Revisiting the Banks of the Wye During a Tour
William Wordsworth seems to be drunken from nostalgia as he revisits his not entirely distant
past. His passion for the landscape is physical, taken in through his eyes, unmediated by more
abstract (or spiritual) thought (Pearson n.p) . As he stands over the lush farmland, not yet ripe, he
describes a familiar but missed beauty before he begins to remember his youthful state, compared
to his modern and matured outlook on nature, and even begins to allow his mind to wonder onto
how his young sister shall view the land. Wordsworth does here what most people will do,... Show

They have been able to capitalize on emerging markets that may not have previously been viable.
This includes Thailand, which is now seen as one of the most beauty conscious countries in the
world ( P G Upbeat , 2010). With this new market, P G has been able to launch their hair care line
in parts of the world that previously were not industrialized and did not have a demand for these
types of products. As more countries especially in Asia, Africa, and Latin America begin to
industrialize, P G can continue to expand their geographic segments. Not only have they penetrated
the countries themselves, but they have penetrated different segments in the consumer market.
With 300 brands in 3 very distinct divisions, P G has been able to diversify and capture a larger
market share. As for business segments, the company has 3 divisions which are Beauty and
Grooming, Health and Wellness, and Household Care Products. All of these divisions are operated
by a centralized business structure that works to make the business the most efficient it can be (
Core Strengths, 2011). In addition to this centralization of the product divisions, the company also
has a Market Development Organization (MDO) to tailor marketing strategies in each geographic
area. This ability to target a specific market has allowed P G to continue to gain the market share in
emerging markets.

Introduction
Several studies have shown that food quality, variety of food, atmosphere, service quality, and price

revenue, and customer loyalty. (Qu, 1997; Kivela, Reece Inbakaran, 1999; Pettijohn, Pettijohn

Comparative Analysis Poetry Paper
Running head: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS POETRY PAPER Comparative Analysis Poetry
Paper My view of the poem Balthazar s Marvelous Afternoon written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
is absolutely entertaining. Balthazar is a carpenter who takes pride in building a bird cage for a
young boy. The time and effort put into making this bird cage has great morality results for
Balthazar. Being the most beautiful bird cage people in the village has ever seen, Balthazar s
pride and extravagant praise boosts up and he is full of confidence. Ready for delivery and

Finally he thinks about the beautiful cage he made and how bad the young boy wanted it so he
decides to give it to him without any payment, leaves and gets drunk with some people from the
village. This Marvelous Afternoon might not have turned out as expected but in reality the
marvelous thing about it in my opinion is him being selfless and thinking about the young boy.
From the beginning to the end of this short story he is well aware that the bird cage cannot
belong to anyone but the person who requested it. The loyalty and dedication to clients in his
business offers uniquely created products built from his heart. In the Poem 5000 Apply for 100
jobs by Jim Daniels, many can relate to this situation. People all over the Country are
unemployed now in days and are willing to get any job they can to feed their families. This
poem is somewhat of similarities with the first poem in a way that the person telling his
experience is grateful for what he has. He is in line trying to find a better opportunity but is told
to leave because all jobs have been filled. Once given the bad news some are upset as to be violent

Homelessness A person without a home, and therefore living on the streets is defined as homeless.
America has numbers of homeless people living without a home or starving from hunger. The
solution to this problem would be the United States providing homeless people with permanent,
affordable housing, and wraparound services. Permanent supportive housing will resolve this
issue for our country. Shelters can be beneficial in providing beds and roofs to people who don t

It can be tremendously effective at serving the chronically homeless get off the streets and stay
stable. This is what s called a housing first approach, frequent studies have found it is much more
effective than depending on shelters. This benefits homeless people in long term housing without
inquiring them to get sober or hang onto a job first. Once they are settled in a stable home, they
gain access to services such as drug and alcohol treatment, an assigned social worker, or job
training. They do not have to take advantage of those services, but most people do choose to do so.
Several people who need permanent supportive housing are fighting mental problems or drug and
alcohol manipulation, and would have ended up in institutions. Isolating those homeless people
from the rest of society is like institutionalizing them, and it violates the law. Some housing
developments provide both permanent supportive housing and low income housing, so that homes
can be made available to larger amounts of the population. This kind of mixed use housing helps
create communities. This includes, single moms living in affordable housing aiding ex cons living
in supportive housing, and vice versa. This and other experiences suggest that integrating
supportive and low income housing can be

The film doesn t put all the blame of obesity on fast food companies. People do have free choice,
but the point he makes is that these companies go out of their way to make the food pretty much
addictive through the use of sugar, fat, and caffeine and that they go out of their way to hide
how unhealthy this stuff really is. On the other hand, there are some things in Spurlock s
documentary which were a little outrageous. The blame should not only be placed on fast food. I
do strongly believe that we all have the will power to walk in McDonalds and order a salad or
simply not go in and make McDonalds to make it a much wealthier company. The director used
great methods on how to get the message across and great graphics to keep the audience
entertained. I do believe is Spurlock would have eaten other food that contained over 2500
calories a day, he would have still faced health problems. Finally, he shows us pictures of him
after he went back to his good eating habits which imply how happy he is to be back in shape. I
think he is trying to send out the message that it s not too late for the viewer to change their eating

The Caribbean History
Derek Walcott and Jean Rhys both have texts that use the fragments of the Caribbean history to
create their texts. Walcott has mentioned in many essays and interviews how important it is for the
artist to not become disillusioned and bitter about history. Rather, artists should make use of these
fragments of European, African, and native Arawak/Amerindian, to reinvent and create a voice that
entails all of those influences.
Walcott redefines and reinvents the literary epic in Omeros and Rhys challenges the ignored
narrative of Bertha/Antoinette in Wide Sargasso Sea. In Omeros, I propose on demonstrating how
Walcott uses Helen as a symbol of the St. Lucia and how her struggle represents the struggle of the
island. I will investigate the images of the victimized Helen of Troy in contrast with this Antillean
Helen who, rather than a victim, is the seducer of the men, and resists the domination of the men
and the effects of colonialism. This gives Helen a tremendous amount of power. She represents the
beauty and desire through which the men of St. Lucia define themselves. I will zoom in on how
Walcott uses Helen through her resistance of the influences of New World and the tourism to show
how the natives still try to hold on to their traditions and strive to create their own identities in an
environment that is constantly causing the natives to reinvent themselves to suit the colonizers and
tourists. Walcott uses Ma Kilman as the mother healer who heals the wounds of

Collectivism And Conformity Of Asian Consumer Culture

1) Chinese consumer psychology
Why Chinese like purchasing luxury? What do Chinese customers need? The research result on
consumer psychology can be concluded into three points: collectivism and conformity of Asian
consumer culture; identity recognition; gift giving culture.
i. Collectivism and Conformity of Asian consumer culture.
Conformity can be seen as one of the most apparent characters that exists in asian countries that are
influenced by collectivism. Compared with western consumers, Chinese customers prefer to follow
others choices or suggestions, especially famous stars styles. This is a kind of consumption idea
that led by group guide or social pressure, which makes individuals tend to coincide with the
majority. In this situation, many consumers tend to follow others instead of individual thinking
when making decisions. Normally, it appears that consumers would tend to choose stores that
attract more clients and select brands with high market share. For example, I found that in Dior
Homme store, the star styles are mentioned frequently by Chinese buyers. Besides, some famous
star style, like the tippet of Burberry are always out of stock thanks to Chinese purchase.

Why Is The Battle Of Vimy Ridge Significant
The Battle of Vimy Ridge Significant or not significant?
Johnathan Hua April 14 2016
The Battle of Vimy Ridge is historically significant because a vast amount of people were
affected. The battle of Vimy Ridge was a critical battle during the Allied offensive called the Arras
offensive. It was a great Allied victory. It started an unbroken chain of victories for the Canadian
Corps. This essay will be explaining why The Battle of Vimy Ridge is historically significant by
having multiple perspectives, many people affected and what long lasting consequences occurred.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was historically significant because there were a wide range of
stakeholders that had different perspectives on Vimy Ridge. Many Canadians thought that it was a
great victory for Canada. The Germans thought of it as a draw at best for the Canadians because
there wasn t a breakthrough following the victory. Some historians thought the battle was just a
myth created by Canada because the battle occurred on Easter Monday, giving it religious
significance. Historians also believe that it was not a very significant event because no
breakthrough occurred after the battle. They believe that other battles, for example Amiens, were

The Application Of Microsoft Office
All started when Bill Gate and Paul Allen, two friends that as early as 13 years old started to
mess around with computers, drop out of college to create their own business. This business
founded April 4, 1975 is known today as Microsoft Corporation. Allen and Gates created a basic

contract with them. The creation of the MS DOS for IBM in mid 80 s gave Microsoft the high
rock success that still last till this day, making them the dominant operating system for personal
computers. Likewise, Microsoft became at a later time the leading business in office suite software
better known as Microsoft Office.
Microsoft Office is a set of programs to serve different purposes for business or personal motives

Although in 1983 Microsoft Word was created and used, it wasn t until 1989 where Microsoft

A Reflective Account Of The 30 Day Placement
A Reflective Account of the 30 Day Placement I was given my first placement in a residential

25 years, the home is owned and run by qualified nurses who specialise in looking after confused,
elderly residents. It can accommodate 32 service users for residential care and also provide
respite care, day care and dementia care. There are currently 18 full or part time care staff plus
domiciliary workers operating on a 12 hour shift system. I was the first student social worker
they had ever given a placement to so I felt like a bit of a guinea pig to start with. On questioning
the staff it became apparent that they had been wary of my imminent arrival and were unsure of
what to make of me. I found out that this was based on the stereotype of the social worker and in
the words of one of the carers social workers are trouble makers . I put them at rest by convincing
them that I was there to learn about all aspects of the care home and how it fitted in with all
aspects of social care. At first I felt like the carers were putting on a show for my benefit but it
became apparent very quickly through observations from distance that they were genuine in their
roles. Prior to the placement I thought I would be just an extra pair of hands in the care home or
that I would be isolated from the day to day routine as the sole student social worker in the home. I

Why Do Tribunals Deserve Justice
Individuals who commit war crimes and genocide undoubtedly deserve severe punishment, and
their victims deserve justice. Though this sentiment would likely be agreed upon by a majority of
people, the logistics of how exactly to carry out this punishment and procure justice are widely
debated. Recently, international courts and tribunals have been set up to try individuals for war
crimes and bring justice to the victims of these war crimes. However, these international courts and
tribunals are often ineffective. Throughout this paper, I will explain why I agree with Adam Smith

Since justice is a concept that differs amongst every culture and group, it is difficult to empirically
measure the effectiveness of an international court in regard to providing justice. However,
supporters of international courts measure their success in ways other than justice brought. For
example, if a group sees that other criminals are being tried, sentenced, and punished appropriately
by an international court, one might assume that this group would be less inclined to carry out
similar crimes. According to Hyeran Jo and Beth Simmons in their 2016 study on international
criminal courts, a large study affiliated with the World Bank based on developing countries found
that higher conviction rates tended to reduce crime, even controlling for the death penalty (Jo and
Simmons, 447). Theoretically, an international court such as the International Criminal Courtcould
deter groups and individuals from committing war crimes based on this criminological data, if these
individuals and groups saw that the court prosecuted effectively and thoroughly. However, there are
many instances that show an international trial is not effective nor thorough. As mentioned earlier,
the Khmer Rouge tribunal lasted for a decade and only three individuals received a

Step two Offer a counseling program ( lead my younger councilors) that offer a safe space fro
teens to discuss their family lives, school problems, potential drug problems, sex and social issues.
Step three Create a community hot line where local teens can call in when they are in trouble
with drugs. I would love to add a place fro teens to call if they are with a drunk driver and need a

Miller, 2014) As we can see in the case study of the Astonville Police Department there were
some mistakes made as far as supervision goes. Some of the problems discussed could have
been avoided had sound judgement and supervision been accounted for. Too many times officers
are left unsupervised which can lead to an array of problems for the officers and the department
as we saw in this case. This stems from the top supervisors all the way down to the street officers.

Their situation went unwatched or supervised and lead to some severe problems. Problems that
could be detrimental to the police department and their policies. Looking at the above reference
scenario, we can say that Sergeant Williams did not take the appropriate actions to protect
everyone involved. Sergeant Williams already knew that FTO Tibbetts was seen as a ladies man
within the department. This should have been a red flag for the Sergeant as he himself viewed
Officer Roberts as an attractive young woman . The sergeant in this case thought that the officer
would be able to handle FTO Tibbetts advances and be a professional. I m sure he also thought
that FTO Tibbetts would be professional. This, however, was not the case. Sergeant Williams
did not monitor the training that was going on and did not see a problem until it was already too
late. Knowing what he did in the beginning, Sgt. Williams should have assigned Officer Roberts
to another FTO. Sergeant Williams should have seen the signs of a possible romantic
relationship going on between Officer Roberts and FTO Tibbetts. Officer Roberts received high
marks for her evaluations, even after she was cleared and released on her own she would rely
solely on FTO Tibbetts for advice and back up, rumors were going around the department about the
two being seen kissing, and he himself saw them in a heated argument. All of these were

These Swell Adjectives Research Paper
What do all these swell adjectives have in common? Well, they all describe the fantastic low
brow literature aptly titled PULP FICTION. The pulps, be it magazines or novels, was North
America s favorite form of escape for nearly sixty years. Pulp fiction delivered lavish cover art,
fantastic illustrations and action packed stories for the American, Canadian and British public.
Nothing, it seems, could stop these publications, they survived wars and depressions without any
signs of slowing down. In fact, it was only in the 1950s when tv became popular that these mass
produced masterpieces began to show hints of death. However, like the common cockroach this
25cent throw away literature would never really go away, only push up in price.

Nazi s Persecution Of The Handicapped Essay
Nazi s Persecution of the Handicapped
Frank Cai
History
November 8th
Holocaust is considered one of the worst man caused disaster ever in the history of human life.
Hundreds of millions of people died during the Holocaust. Even worse, the victim of the Holocaust
is based on race. Why did Adolf Hitler pick on the Jews? Because when he wants to rise power,
one of the most common ways is propaganda. He said that Jews are the ones that ruined their
country. Many Jews were killed; they were also different kinds of people: just like Jehovah s
Witnesses, Roma Gypsies, Handicapped and many others. While the soldiers were fighting at the
front line, hundreds of thousands of disabled were killed.
Why were the handicapped killed, what s wrong with them? During the time of the war, everything
was scarce, the food, the ammo, and many other resources. And a bunch of other works that they
need to do with the use of human resources. Germany is a small country, with not many workers,
and most people that are strong enough were in the army and went to war. They need enough
worker to provide them with the enough resources that they need. Any people that are in Germany
and are not strong enough (except for children) to work are killed. Hitler and the Nazi think that if
they are not strong enough to work for us and using our resources, what s the point keeping them
alive then?
On July 14, 1933, the Nazi government instituted the Law for the Prevention of Progeny with

Theme Of Women In A Gun For Sale By Graham Greene
Graham Greene has written many novels in his life and has placed his experiences within his
stories. Graham Greene s beliefs come across in his books and lay out his views on society.
Greene did not shy away from using tropes in his book, and usually, these literary tropes included
the women of his novel. Two of his books A Gun for Sale and Brighton Rock
leave Greene s female
counterparts feeling unsatisfied with the characterization of the female leads in his stories, for they
appear to only influence the novel through acting as a plot device. From the surface, Greene s
female characters only fulfill the purpose of the innocent or right half of the relationships, while the
men in the novels heavily identify with corruption and evil. Greene utilizes the theme of innocence
versus corruption, to develop the characterization and relationships of the main characters in A Gun
for Sale, as well as Brighton Rock, through this lens it is clear to see how Greene relates the
corruption of the male characters to Greene s idea of anarchism.
Innocence and corruption, two different themes that work exceptionally well together to showcase
the difference in characters. An important thing to know is what do these words mean? If
innocence means those who are free from guilt or sin through being unacquainted with evil, then
none of the characters in Greene s novels would ever be considered innocent because they all at one
point or throughout the entire story are acquainted with evil. However,

Overcoming Adversity
I used to think that I was all that. In elementary school and middle school I didn t have to work
hard and was able to get good grades without putting forth a lot of effort. My personal philosophy
was that if I worked hard in class during the school day, then when I got home from school, my
time should be my own. I had been successful following this belief system for years, and then, I
enrolled in AP World History (APWH) in the tenth grade. My experiences in APWH changed my
entire outlook on my role as a student and caused me to reevaluate my perspective on the things
that were important to me. I had heard that APWH was going to require a lot of work, but I was
sure that it would be no different than any other honors level class that... Show more content on

It became obvious that he didn t care about me as a student. He only cared about me as an athlete
whose skills could help his team. By the mid term point of Fall semester, I was depressed and
ready to give up. I was disappointed in myself because I was still failing despite dropping out of
football. My parents refused to let me succumb to the poor me syndrome. This was the time to
show my strength of character. I needed to prove to myself that I could overcome this obstacle. I
prayed to God to give me guidance on how to get back on track. I started staying up later to do the
reading. I paid more attention in class. I joined a study group. As I put forth more of an effort,
my grade slowly began to improve. By the end of the fall semester, I had raised my F to a D . I kept
my focus during the spring semester. I ended the year with a 77% in the class. Although I didn t
receive an A or a B, I received something more valuable: self respect and self esteem. I learned
that I must always do what is in my best interest even if there are others who tell me that I am
making wrong decisions. My work ethic is now the complete opposite of what it was in my 10th
grade year. I have learned many life lessons: I take my studies seriously, I know that I am capable
of being successful in college level classes, and most importantly, I have learned the value of hard

The Supreme Court Essay
The foundation of the Supreme Court began with the earliest articles of the constitution. More
specifically, Section II of Article III dictated that The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in
Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made,
or which shall be made, under their Authority... (National Archives). This language laid out the
legal precedent for which the Supreme Court could be built. Due to the intentionally vague nature,
the founding fathers intended for the first Congressional Contingent to build the workings of the
court. Inspirations for such a Federal legal system arose from several sources. Chiefly among
these sources was British Common Law and the Magna Carta. The first Congress built the
Supreme Court in its original form of six judges, and from there, the court evolved in the early 19th
century and exerted its influence on the development of the United States of America. The founding
fathers who helped to develop the rationale of the Constitution outlined the section on the Supreme
Court with a certain sense of delicacy. In this way, the language they used didn t developed a
framework for the Supreme Court. There were several reasons for this tepid action. Firstly, the
concept of an independent non partisan judiciary system, in the mind of the American citizenry,
was too reminiscent of British Royal Rule. The United States was fresh off an intellectual and
physical battle with a perceived

The Theory Of Legitimacy Of Political Authority Essay
Through the channels of social change, there are truly only two fundamental ways to produce
revolution: through either working with the system or directly contrasting the system. Historically,
we can see the recurrence of both parties at the heart of action. While the point of deliberation
could be an individual, a group, a governing body, or an enterprise, social forces work to see justice
is properly met. This belief has withstood varying philosophical and structural systemic changes.
Additionally, it is compliant with a degree of political participation. Modernly, the contractarianism
that exists, the theory of legitimacy of political authority (Cudd, 2000), demands a level of
democracy and tolerance. Many modern states rely upon a social contract to function. As
individuals within these states seek stability, they rationalize that maintaining a certain level of
morality is in their best interest, thus consenting to a government. If a group within any state
contests any of the contractual obligations, a political or social movement serves to begin dialogue
and negotiation. To be clear, many social movements take the form of grassroots organizing, or
community organizing, which refers to the collective action of the part of a community or group in
order to effect change at the local, regional, national, or international level. They empower
communities whose aims can range from encouraging political conversation to increasing mass
participation in politics. Despite

The Influence of Ancient Greek Mythology on Modern Society...
Ancient Greek society fell over 2000 years ago but despite this, its mythology still continues to
influence our western society. References to Greek mythology can be found all through time and in
our western culture. The influence of Greek mythology can be found in our science, arts and
literature and our language. When Ancient Greece fell to the Roman Empire, Rome adapted its
mythologies which still influence us today as they have through history. That is not to say that
Greek mythologywasn t influenced itself Greek mythology has links with the bible and the early
Mycenaean s. It has also been recognised as one of the earliest forms of paganism.

They were named for ******, Poseidon and Hades the king of the underworld.
Asides from the planets, many of the moons orbiting the planets, especially Jupiter (Zeus) have
been named according to Greek mythology. Pluto s moon Charon was named after the boat keeper
of the underworld, continuing the link between ancient Greek mythology and western society.
The influence of Greek mythology does not stop here, it continues into the stars and galaxies many
of which are named after characters in Greek mythology and this is how Greek mythology has
continually influenced western society over time.
However, Greek mythologies role in western society is not limited to our science, as it has also
played a huge part in developing the English language and phrases that we use.
There are two ways in which Greek mythology has affected the English language and that is in
words that reference Greek mythology and through phrases that represent the actions of characters
in Greek mythology.
Words such as an aphrodisiac something that arouses or intensifies sexual desire, stems from the
Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Also linked with Aphrodite is Venereal disease (another
word for STI). This stems from the Roman term Venus which is the equivalent Aphrodite. Also, the
drug morphine its name comes from the Greek god of sleep, Morpheus. Its words such as these
that create the link between Greek mythology and western society. These are clear examples of

Sects Vs Cults
There are different types of groups that you can branch off of your religion, there are sects and
cults. A sect is a group of people with some different religious beliefs from the group larger to
where they actually belong, like a Church. A Cult is usually a small group of people who have
religious beliefs and practices observed by others as bizarre. A cultis founded by a powerful leader
also known as a charismatic. Sects have a high degree of pressure with the surrounding society
unlike churches.
Sect determines from the Latin word secta which is characterized as school of thought . It too
comes from the English dialect from the Old French secte which is alluded to as a particular
framework of convictions. While a cult is a completely different interpretation. Cult comes from a
Latin word cultus which implies labor, adore, veneration, or culture . It too entered the English
dialect through the French word culte which is characterized as specific form of worship . At that
point later on in the English dialect it came to mean devotion to an individual or thing . ... Show

One difference that has stood out is that a sect is a small group that follow a different doctrine
than the larger group they separated from. While a Cult is small wannabe religious group that has
very untraditional beliefs, rituals, and practices. This shows that a sect just derived from a larger
group and they branched off by themselves to practice a different doctrine, some of the sects I
found are from Islam they have Sunni and Shia sects, Judaism has the Karaites, and Hinduism has
Shiyaism and Shaktism sects. While cults are looked at weird and unusual because of how they
practice their own type of religion. Cults have leaders and their leaders make their people follow
them and be

The Greatest Mayan Achievement
The greatest Mayan achievement of the Maya was probably how they lived for at least a few
years. I think this because they believed in many things like gods that were so bloodthirsty that
they had to do very violent ceremonies, which are when they sacrificed others to give human
blood to the gods to get what they want. This has hurt their population. Why this might be the
greatest Mayan achievement is because they lived long enough to at least be in their 10 s 40 s. If
there was a religion that did these sacrifices then they wouldn t be able to live that long because
their population would be highly reduced. Also, doing these sacrifices made others want to leave
this village even more. This achievement could be the greatest because

National Anthem Essay
The controversial issue of protesting the National Anthem has plagued the United States since the
year of 2016. Disputes have occurred over whether or not the athletes should be able to display
their opinion to the public even if the demonstration offends our armed forces. Many say the
protests are useless because the kneeling is diverting the public eye from the original issue; the anti
protest collection also agrees that the kneeling is not unconstitutional, and it should be restricted by
the owners of the teams. Though all of the arguments can be assumed to be correct, one might could
argue that these athletes were given this high platform so that they could be allowed to use their
freedom of speech to express their views about inequality, injustice, police brutality, etc. and to show
equality through the unification of their teams. This act of defiance against the National Anthem
was said to be disrespectful to the men and women that have protected this country. Many war
veterans agree with this because they believe that the athletes are dishonoring the symbol that gave
each of us our freedoms. I stand for our flag and anthem, and I kneel for our fallen. That s what
patriots do, (Griggs). The veterans of our country are not the only ones expressing their beliefs on
the subject; a publication by the Wall Street Journal states that before the National Anthem in
Foxborough, Massachusetts, fans held a sign reading Real Patriots Stand Up For Their Country (

Nuclear Power Supplies A Significant Part Of Current...
MOX Title
Background:
Nuclear power supplies a significant portion of current energy demands. One of the newer
advances in nuclear fuel is Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel. MOX is a mixture of UO2 and PuO2.
Both of these starting materials can be recovered from spent traditional nuclear fuel [1]. As such,
MOX provides a method for reducing waste generated during the operation of a nuclear reactor.
MOX fuel is currently in use in Europe, Russia and Japan [2]. The United States is in the process
of developing next generation nuclear reactors which can employ MOX. Due to the importance of
MOX fuel, important research is currently being to both understand the principles governing MOX,
and how to enhance its performance. MOX fuel is comprised of UO2 and PuO2. The UO2 is
acquired either from naturally occurring uranium oxide, or recovered from the spent fuel of a
traditional nuclear reactor. Plutonium metal is produced by the U 238 during operation of the
nuclear reactor [1]. The Pu must then be converted to PuO2. The first step in producing PuO2 is
to dissolve the recovered Pu in HNO3 HF to get Pu(NO3)4. Once the Pu(NO3)4 is generated, a
few different methods can be used to acquire PuO2. The most commercially used method involves
the precipitation of plutonium oxalate. The Pu(NO3)4 is conditioned with hydrogen peroxide to
produce Pu(lV). Next, an excess of oxalic acid is added to reduce the solubility. The oxalate is
then left to decompose to oxide which can then be filtered and dried

  • 2. Life After St. Jerome s Indian Horse Novel Study Life after St. Jerome s: Indian Horse Novel Study For years, First Nations children endured the harrowing experiences of residential schools. It was not until 1996, did the final residential school close down. It took over a hundred years of physical, physiological, and the sexual abuse of thousands of children before residential schools existed no more. Although they do not exist anymore, residential schools continue to cause pain throughout First Nationscommunities. There are a variety of novels that describe the accounts of residential school survivors, both fiction and non fiction, each powerful in their own way. Indian Horse, a novel by Richard Wagamese, is one of these novels. The book follows Saul Indian Horse, a boy of Ojibwe descent, and his experiences within St. Jerome s Indian Residential School. Saul turns to hockey as a form of protection from the fowl memories of his experiences at St. Jerome s, using the game to ignore the sexual abuse he endured. This denial results in Saul s pain, which comes out in the form anger on the ice, and which ultimately results in him taking up alcohol. It is only when Saul returns to St. Jerome s, that he is able to stop the denial, and begin his path to healing. Richard manages to lead the reader down the same path of denial as Saul, therefore allowing the reader to experience the same feeling of shock as felt by Saul in his moments of realization. Saul s denial of his sexual abuse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Devil Facial Tumor Disease ast week, my group and I were given various pieces of information about the Tasmanian Devil. We had the task of finding out exactly what had caused the scarring and marks on their faces; and could only use the information that was provided to us in folders. After several days of making many new discoveries about the devils, my group and I concluded that the markings on the devil s faces were mainly due to the Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD). As an oncologist, I was quite aware that tumors and cancer were not contagious and could not be passed to another organism through any form of contact. Through this information, it did not make sense that this tumor disease would be spreading throughout a whole region, and eliminating a population so rapidly. I was aware that cancer could be caused by many factors, including: aging, tobacco, radiation, sun exposure, viruses, and chemicals; all of which cause cancer through manipulating cells. Cancerous cells are very different from regular cells, and are irregularly shaped, have a high nucleus to cytoplasm ratio, and often times have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This idea went against all of my previous research, and left me quite puzzled; how could cancer suddenly be contagious and only affecting this one species? My group and I then proceeded to read about the history of the Tasmanian Deviland how it had at one point become extinct in Australia, and only found in Tasmania, hence its name. Through this migration of a whole species and the extinction of all of the devils in other regions, the devils soon got a low genetic diversity. All of the devil s in the region have similar cells, and are practically all related as they all stem from the same original devil and therefore, their bodies are not able to recognize cancerous cells which in turn creates the large scarring and tumors on their ... Throughout the book, Lizard, Lucius Sims is portrayed by the author, Dennis Covington, as a mentally challenged person, and he contributes to the theme of overcoming bullying. • 6. The Vietnam War Was A Long And Costly Conflict Causes if the Vietnam War Before WWII Vietnam belonged to the French Empire but during the war, it was taken over by the Japanese but since they were being defeated they retreated back to Japan. This gave the chance to the Vietnamese people to create their own government led by Ho Chi Minh but at the end of the war, the south was given back to the french while the north was led by the Chinese, who was not communist at the time, so Ho Chi Minh lost all his power. When the Chinese pulled out in 1946 the Ho Chi Minh party took over The Viet Minh and by October the French stated their intention of reuniting back with north but it would all be under the french rule so the Viet Minh prepared to fight back. Imperialism, the practice of extending a country s power and influence through diplomacy or military force, is often thought of as negative because of the use of military force. The age of imperialism lasted from 1870 1914. One example of imperialismfrom this time period is when the countries Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Spain all took control over different parts of Africa. Epigenetic Engineering Personal Statement I was fascinated to discover that my namesake was the co discoverer of DNA, and, as a child, this coincidence undoubtedly influenced my love of science. I followed the scientific developments of the 21st century with interest particularly genome project research. My studies continue to direct me towards this field: I want to be part of this on going scientific revolution, which is constantly changing and influencing how we live our lives. My interest in biology grew with the IGCSE course, especially its introduction to fundamental genetic engineering. Further inspired by the AS syllabus, I broadened my knowledge by reading the New Scientist. Williams and Dunbar s recent article raised a concept I hadn t considered before: that humans and... The scientists gave me amazing opportunities to apply my knowledge to situations, such as analysing optical density results taken from a running bioreactor. I got to see the precision behind academic research and was taught laboratory skills used in industry every day, including the use of gram staining to differentiate between bacterial species, and SDS PAGE gels to separate proteins. Life at a molecular level particularly interests me, as it combines chemistry and biology to explain concepts such as Systems Chemistry and the origins of life. Why chemical reactions happen by J Keeler and P Wothers helped me to understand these ideas, as well as complementing my A level chemistry course. I tested my chemistry and problem solving ... • 12. Kant And Morality When talking about whether or not consequences of an act have anything to do with morality, one must think of all the ways in which an individual s acts could be considered morally wrong. Morality relates to conduct, whereas they both involve some type of action that is partaken by the individual, which can be mistaken as being good even though the consequences are considered bad (Dewey, 1891).When a person performs an action, and the outcome of that action is a negative one, we often find ourselves blaming anything other than the individual themselves because we believe they had no foresight on what was going to happen. Dewey describes that when conduct and character are involved in telling if somebody is being moral, or immoral, we are unable to say whether or not the action was good or bad until we know how that action turns out and we know what the consequences are. Every day was very peaceful with no complaints and no worries from the store until the king of England decided to make a stamp act, which is giving taxes or extra money to any British supplies had. My husband was irritated to hear such news, because he knows it was unfair to his customers, spending more money from items that came from England, and the king decided to do whatever he wants to the new home as he thinks he can rule the whole world. The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual or Hearing Impaired Language is a means of communication that people use to interact with others in society. Generally, language comprises vocal sounds to which meanings have been assigned by cultural convention and often supplemented by various gestures. (Sharma, 30) For any normal person, language is no longer viewed as a tool to acquire: language is placed as a standard and basic skill, almost being considered given at birth. Such an idea about language is reasonable when taking into account how the development of speech and language is acquired in early childhood. Then, we consider difficulties that the blind and the deaf face in their communication and interaction with others. Finally, after identifying the difficulties, we then focus on different technological innovations and improvements that concentrate to ease such difficulties for the blind and the deaf, thus providing them wider access and use of language especially in their everyday life. First, let s consider the difference for people with visual and hearing impairments to acquire the use of language in comparison to the standard and basic language development process. From age 0 month to 6 months, babies typically learn most basic communicating language skills such as crying and babbling to express different feelings they experiences. Also, they start to recognize and look for familiar voices and sounds. (Oesterriech) The development of typical language skills of children aging 0 to 6 months primarily depends on hearing. These language skills are essentially responses to what children hear in their life. So it is presumably correct to state that babies with hearing impairments suffer the most and pulled back on developing language skills from this early on. A major drawback for deaf babies occur in the first year, for too often babies hearing impairment is not diagnosed until babies are 12 months old. The Marbles are not distinctively Greek in the value of cultural heritage in the consideration that Greece was not a sovereign nation at the time of creation or acquisition. Thus the Indo European material must remain housed in Britain to showcase not exclusively the British imperial power, but also the historical powers that resonate in the Elgin Marbles. When first presented in London June 1807, by Lord Elgin people believed the Marbles were, superior in style to everything else on earth , and in acquisition of the Marbles the Periclean Athens acted as a British role model in the period of the Napoleonic Wars. The Marbles of the Parthenon were created by the Athenians after the defeat of the Persians in 479 BCE with the lead of Pericles who aimed in the advancement of art and culture through the making of the Acropolis. Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Masque Of The Red Death In the same way, dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the characters do not, which causes the reader to fear or dread what they suspect will happen. The first indication of dramatic irony is in Masque of the Red Death when the black room with the blood red windows is described. This description creates a bad feeling about the room and the reader senses something bad will happen in that room. This idea is proven later when the Prince dies in that room. In this sense, The Sirens of Titan was, undoubtedly, the most astounding and mesmerizing novel I have ever laid my eyes on. It poses a great significance for both my personality and thoughts as it changed them drastically; therefore, I find The Sirens of Titan to be the most influential piece of literature and the Magnum Opus amongst all of Kurt Vonneguts his works. Kurt Vonnegut structures an elaborate plot in which he masterfully touches upon the great themes of free will, luck, religion, and the actual meaning of life, all the while using a sarcastic yet humanistic tone with an extensive symbolism in The Sirens of Titan. Moreover, the manipulation of time structure, change of narrations, and premature/delayed revelations he exposes his readers to, as chapters advance, constitutes the novel s genuine and idiosyncratical postmodern character. • 40. A Reflective Account Of The 30 Day Placement A Reflective Account of the 30 Day Placement I was given my first placement in a residential care home for the elderly located next to a busy main road in a small town. Established for over 25 years, the home is owned and run by qualified nurses who specialise in looking after confused, elderly residents. It can accommodate 32 service users for residential care and also provide respite care, day care and dementia care. There are currently 18 full or part time care staff plus domiciliary workers operating on a 12 hour shift system. I was the first student social worker they had ever given a placement to so I felt like a bit of a guinea pig to start with. On questioning the staff it became apparent that they had been wary of my imminent arrival and were unsure of what to make of me. I found out that this was based on the stereotype of the social worker and in the words of one of the carers social workers are trouble makers . I put them at rest by convincing them that I was there to learn about all aspects of the care home and how it fitted in with all aspects of social care. At first I felt like the carers were putting on a show for my benefit but it became apparent very quickly through observations from distance that they were genuine in their roles. Prior to the placement I thought I would be just an extra pair of hands in the care home or that I would be isolated from the day to day routine as the sole student social worker in the home. Though this sentiment would likely be agreed upon by a majority of people, the logistics of how exactly to carry out this punishment and procure justice are widely debated. Recently, international courts and tribunals have been set up to try individuals for war crimes and bring justice to the victims of these war crimes. However, these international courts and tribunals are often ineffective. Since justice is a concept that differs amongst every culture and group, it is difficult to empirically measure the effectiveness of an international court in regard to providing justice. However, supporters of international courts measure their success in ways other than justice brought. For example, if a group sees that other criminals are being tried, sentenced, and punished appropriately by an international court, one might assume that this group would be less inclined to carry out similar crimes. According to Hyeran Jo and Beth Simmons in their 2016 study on international criminal courts, a large study affiliated with the World Bank based on developing countries found that higher conviction rates tended to reduce crime, even controlling for the death penalty (Jo and Simmons, 447). Theoretically, an international court such as the International Criminal Courtcould deter groups and individuals from committing war crimes based on this criminological data, if these individuals and groups saw that the court prosecuted effectively and thoroughly. However, there are many instances that show an international trial is not effective nor thorough. As mentioned earlier, the Khmer Rouge tribunal lasted for a decade and only three individuals received a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Theme Of Women In A Gun For Sale By Graham Greene Graham Greene has written many novels in his life and has placed his experiences within his stories. Graham Greene s beliefs come across in his books and lay out his views on society. Greene did not shy away from using tropes in his book, and usually, these literary tropes included the women of his novel. Two of his books A Gun for Sale and Brighton Rock leave Greene s female counterparts feeling unsatisfied with the characterization of the female leads in his stories, for they appear to only influence the novel through acting as a plot device. From the surface, Greene s female characters only fulfill the purpose of the innocent or right half of the relationships, while the men in the novels heavily identify with corruption and evil. Greene utilizes the theme of innocence versus corruption, to develop the characterization and relationships of the main characters in A Gun for Sale, as well as Brighton Rock, through this lens it is clear to see how Greene relates the corruption of the male characters to Greene s idea of anarchism. Innocence and corruption, two different themes that work exceptionally well together to showcase the difference in characters. An important thing to know is what do these words mean? If innocence means those who are free from guilt or sin through being unacquainted with evil, then none of the characters in Greene s novels would ever be considered innocent because they all at one point or throughout the entire story are acquainted with evil. More specifically, Section II of Article III dictated that The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority... (National Archives). This language laid out the legal precedent for which the Supreme Court could be built. Due to the intentionally vague nature, the founding fathers intended for the first Congressional Contingent to build the workings of the court. Inspirations for such a Federal legal system arose from several sources. Chiefly among these sources was British Common Law and the Magna Carta. The first Congress built the Supreme Court in its original form of six judges, and from there, the court evolved in the early 19th century and exerted its influence on the development of the United States of America. The founding fathers who helped to develop the rationale of the Constitution outlined the section on the Supreme Court with a certain sense of delicacy. In this way, the language they used didn t developed a framework for the Supreme Court. There were several reasons for this tepid action. Firstly, the concept of an independent non partisan judiciary system, in the mind of the American citizenry, was too reminiscent of British Royal Rule. • 54. The Theory Of Legitimacy Of Political Authority Essay Through the channels of social change, there are truly only two fundamental ways to produce revolution: through either working with the system or directly contrasting the system. Historically, we can see the recurrence of both parties at the heart of action. While the point of deliberation could be an individual, a group, a governing body, or an enterprise, social forces work to see justice is properly met. This belief has withstood varying philosophical and structural systemic changes. Additionally, it is compliant with a degree of political participation. Modernly, the contractarianism that exists, the theory of legitimacy of political authority (Cudd, 2000), demands a level of democracy and tolerance. Many modern states rely upon a social contract to function. As individuals within these states seek stability, they rationalize that maintaining a certain level of morality is in their best interest, thus consenting to a government. If a group within any state contests any of the contractual obligations, a political or social movement serves to begin dialogue and negotiation. To be clear, many social movements take the form of grassroots organizing, or community organizing, which refers to the collective action of the part of a community or group in order to effect change at the local, regional, national, or international level. They empower communities whose aims can range from encouraging political conversation to increasing mass participation in politics. Despite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Disputes have occurred over whether or not the athletes should be able to display their opinion to the public even if the demonstration offends our armed forces. Many say the protests are useless because the kneeling is diverting the public eye from the original issue; the anti protest collection also agrees that the kneeling is not unconstitutional, and it should be restricted by the owners of the teams. Though all of the arguments can be assumed to be correct, one might could argue that these athletes were given this high platform so that they could be allowed to use their freedom of speech to express their views about inequality, injustice, police brutality, etc. and to show equality through the unification of their teams. This act of defiance against the National Anthem was said to be disrespectful to the men and women that have protected this country. Many war veterans agree with this because they believe that the athletes are dishonoring the symbol that gave each of us our freedoms. I stand for our flag and anthem, and I kneel for our fallen. • 59. Nuclear Power Supplies A Significant Part Of Current... MOX Title Background: Nuclear power supplies a significant portion of current energy demands. One of the newer advances in nuclear fuel is Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel. MOX is a mixture of UO2 and PuO2. Both of these starting materials can be recovered from spent traditional nuclear fuel [1]. As such, MOX provides a method for reducing waste generated during the operation of a nuclear reactor. MOX fuel is currently in use in Europe, Russia and Japan [2]. The United States is in the process of developing next generation nuclear reactors which can employ MOX. Due to the importance of MOX fuel, important research is currently being to both understand the principles governing MOX, and how to enhance its performance. MOX fuel is comprised of UO2 and PuO2. The UO2 is acquired either from naturally occurring uranium oxide, or recovered from the spent fuel of a traditional nuclear reactor. Plutonium metal is produced by the U 238 during operation of the nuclear reactor [1]. The Pu must then be converted to PuO2. The first step in producing PuO2 is to dissolve the recovered Pu in HNO3 HF to get Pu(NO3)4. Once the Pu(NO3)4 is generated, a few different methods can be used to acquire PuO2. The most commercially used method involves the precipitation of plutonium oxalate. The Pu(NO3)4 is conditioned with hydrogen peroxide to produce Pu(lV). Next, an excess of oxalic acid is added to reduce the solubility. The oxalate is then left to decompose to oxide which can then be filtered and dried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
