Pulstar Research Papers
Pulsars are highly magnetised, rapidly spinning (the spin period ranging from a few milliseconds to a
few seconds) neutron stars, which are the end products of the evolutionary stages of massive stars
after supernova explosions. As the star collapses, the density becomes large, giving rise to a star
consisting mainly of neutrons, with $sim$ 1.4 {Msun} and a radius of $sim$ 10 km
citep{Lattimer13}. They have inferred surface magnetic fields of the order of 10$^{11}$ $10^{13}$
G citep{Beskin}, and are the most directly observable remnants of dead stars in the Universe.

Matter is being transferred from the companion star onto the neutron star to form an accretion disc
around the star. Angular momentum from the companion star is also transferred to the neutron star
during this process, thereby increasing the rotation rate of the neutron star. The resulting pulsars are
usually millisecond pulsars in this case (credit: ESA space images).}

First observed in the early 70 s citep{Giacconi71, Tananbaum72}, the APPs are the brightest objects
in the X ray sky. Their powerful electromagnetic radiation is powered by the gravitational potential
energy of the accreted matter. The accreting matter is directed by the magnetosphere onto the the
magnetic poles of the star, thereby increasing its energy and angular momentum in the process. The
rapid slowdown of the accreting matter at the polar surface of the star releases gravitational potential
energy as X rays, and the rotation of these X ray hot spots across our line of sight gives rise to the

The Third Wish By Peter Archetypes
In the story The Third Wish the readers can conclude that Mr. Peters has three valuable traits about
him.
One trait that can be drawn about Mr. Peters character is that he is loyal. After he turned Leita back
into a swan he never wished for a new wife . He stayed with her until he died. Furthermore when
someone asked him why he didn t wish for another wife. He said, Not likely. ....I ll stay faithful to
Leita. (page 318) In addition, he was also loyal when he didn t use his third wish after he told the king
of the forest he wouldn t. I shall do neither, said Mr. Peters calmly.. He was even found dead with a
smile on his face,a withered leaf, and a white feather.(page 317 318) This evidence shows he never
used his third wish and that he stayed loyal to Leita. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Peters valuable traits is being selfless. One moment in the story where it shows he was helpful is when
he finds a swan that had become entangled in thorns on the bank and tries to get it out even though it
is pecking and glaring at him. Then he stayed on the canal to make sure it was fine and had suffered
no damage done to it.(page 313 314) This shows he would risk his life to save an animal in danger.
Another moment is when he offers to change Leita back into a swan so she can be with her sister
(Rhea). Then shall I use my second wish to turn you back into a swan again? he asked... (page

Agriscience Educator Essay
Career Research: Agriscience Educator
Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve is the motto of the National FFA
Organization. This historical organization is guided by dedicated educators teaching in the field of
agriscience. Agriscience educators are in high demand in Alabama and across the nation. Agriscience
educators teach in a project based learning environment that reaches all students by teaching about
innovative agricultural topics and working with new technology all while traveling across the state
and country with the FFA.
When making a career choice it is wise for one to consider the laws of supply and demand. The
current shortage of agriscience educators in Alabama and across the nation has made this a ... Show

In conjunction with the FFA Organization, agriscience educators help students conduct Supervised
Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). These experiences are based on student interest and designed to give
the student an opportunity to build skills related to an agriscience career. One example of an SAE
would be working with a mentor to learn about poultry or hay production. Project based learning
happens every day in an ag classroom. Students gain knowledge and career skills related to welding,
construction, and even electrical work by conducting hands on learning activities guided by an
agriscience educators. Project based learning is not new. It is a concept that agriscience education has
built its foundation on. Not every student thrives in a traditional four walled, 30 desk classroom with a
person giving a lecture. Many students feel lost in this learning setting. Agriscience education has the
unique ability to reach many of those students who aren t successful in a traditional classroom.
Students have different learning styles. For example, one student might have an auditory learning style
which means that he or she learns best by hearing. Another student might be a visual learner which
means they learn by seeing. For many who find success in agriscience, it is clear that they are tactile
learners. These types of students are a hands on learner who prefers to touch, move, build, or draw
what you learn, and you tend to learn better when some type of

King Daniel Research Paper
Daniel
The Babylonians had attacked Jerusalem and took many Jewish captives; one of them was Daniel. He
is known loyal to God and wise beyond his years. He interprets dreams and visions. His gifts are from
God of Israel, and he became a living testimony to God in a strange land. His symbolic visions about
the future of Israel, world kingdoms, and the kingdom of God exposes everyone to the long term plan
for the world. Daniel is not only known as Daniel the prophet; he is also known as one of the most
influential figures in the Book of Daniel who served the King and his successors in Babylon with
loyalty, while remaining true to God of Israel. Daniel s life and prophecies are recorded in the Book of
Daniel. Great Prophet Daniel was descended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He made up in his mind to serve God. He accepted the bondage of eating the king s food at the king s
table and being torn apart from his family, ripped out of everything he has known, and being trained to
work for a pagan king. He also accepted the pagan education and a new pagan name. He had to make
three important decisions every day. Daniel had to take part in a pagan education, put up with being
called a pagan name, and eating pagan food. He and his friends exceeded the physical development of
their novitiates not because of their genius or diet, but because God gave Daniel knowledge and skill
in every aspect of literature and wisdom (1: 17). In every matter of wisdom and understanding
concerning the King inquires; Daniel s influence assisted in every matter due to the power of his God.
He knew sharing a meal at the king s table meant sharing the king s values. Eating together implies
friendship, support, endorsement, and shared values. Eating the food in this type of situation
represented a moral compromise of everything he had hoped for. His influence on biblical events is
important to learn from because it teaches that a person cannot corrupt a man from the outside. Daniel
may have appeared as a pagan on the outside but on the inside, he was a servant of the living God. He

International Food Festival Sparknotes
The International Food Festival is a graphic novel that was put together by Parvati Nair, Alana
Susbilla, Izabella Gomez, and I. The novel is about an International food festival that takes place in
the united states and to be exactly it takes place in our present day time during Trump s presidency.
The food festival has desserts and dishes from all over the world. The protagonist of the graphic novel
are the international foods who are all nice and respecting of others. While, the antagonist of the
graphic novel are the American foods who believe that they are superior to the international foods.
The international foods stick up to the American foods hate and eventually at the end all of the foods
get eaten. The purpose of the graphic novel was to spread awareness about the amount of racism that
takes place in the United States. The amount of hate crimes in the United States has increased since
the Donald Trump became the president. In general the man representing our whole nation is racist,
homophobic, anti feminist, and much more. The quote get of my country has been thrown around by

my festival just because of where the dessert is from. The answer is it s not ethically correct to be
saying a phrase like that. If this was a conversation between two people other people would try to step
in because it is ethically wrong for someone to be treated like that. The pathos appeal can be seen by
asking how the international desserts felt after the American dessert harassed them. The Americans

harassed illegal immigrants and even ripped families apart. Does he not feel any pain or any

Compare And Contrast Galileo And Paine
Language has been an important part of an individual s life in order to communicate and understand
one another. However, Bacon, Galileo and Paine believe that language beyond the means of
communication can hinder our own understanding as sometimes can be. Language has fooled the
human mind to understanding the world without the idea of reasoning and rational thinking. In Bacon
s Novum Organum, especially in the Idols of the Market, he talks about how language can create
confusion rather than understanding through the random use of words. Nothing only does words create
confusion but lead mankind into vain and innumerable controversies and fallacies (34). Man is unable
to form specific words because of the lack of attention to nature and the usage of words that is difficult
to define in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He points out in his Letter to Christina of Tuscany that words differ by the context of their meaning
especially in the written Scriptures in order to accommodate every population. He argues that words
do not mean what they are out to be and which appear to differ from the absolute truth so far as the
bare meaning of the words is concerned (18). Galileo argues that some of the biblical passages should
not be taken literally because some have different meaning beneath their words. Lastly, Paine claims
in his writing of The Age of Reason, God s message cannot be in language due to its incapable of
interpretation in different languages which prevent others to understand what the Bible ought to say.
This is all done by a revelation which presents a problem on what the word truly means as something
communicated immediately from God to man (162). This inhibits understanding because not
everything is given through first hand experience but rather hearsay from others. Language rather than
giving providing clear understanding, unfortunately brings confusion that leads to fallacies and

The North Korean People s Army
At 4:00am on June 25, 1950, the North Korean People s Army (NKPA) crossed the 38th parallel in
force and invaded South Korea with the objective of unifying the two Koreas into a single communist
nation. General Douglas MacArthur would once again prove his value as a military commander with
his conception of Operation Chromite, which directed how the UN forces would respond. MacArthur
s unique gift in recognizing strategic opportunities, along with America s ability to quickly gather
military assets and counter in force, were key to the success of the Operation Chromite landings at
Inchon and turning the tide of the Korean War.
From the moment their invasion began, NKPA experienced success against the UN forces, led by the
United States and sent in to assist the South Korean Army. However, UN troops, all of which were
now under the command of General MacArthur, were literally overwhelmed at the onslaught of the
well equipped and experienced NKPA. By the end of July, UN forces had been driven into a small
area in the southeast portion of the Korean Pennisula around the Port of Pusan (present day Busan).
With the NKPA at their front, and the Sea of Japan at their back, UN forces were in dire straight and
running out of options. Only the visionary mind of General MacArthur conceptualizing and executing
Operation Chromite could avoid a military disaster and save South Korea.
Although the NKPA appeared in control of the conflict, MacArthur recognized the strain placed on the

Metamorphosis Kafka Analysis
The title of the story The Metamorphosis , by Franz Kafka is misleading. Merriam Webster defines
metamorphosis as the change of physical form, structure or substance, especially by supernatural
means, a striking alteration in appearance, character or circumstance . While there is an obvious
change in the appearance of the character Gregor Samsa, it becomes apparent after reading the story,
that his appearance is not the only thing that transforms. In the story, Gregor wakes up one morning to
realize that he has changed into a giant insect. Not only did he transform into a creature, but he was
also stripped of his humanity. The author Franz Kafka uses this symbolism to focus the reader s
attention on one character that mirrors himself and his life. Both Kafka and Gregor are traveling
salesman from Prague, experience dysfunctional personal relationships throughout their life and suffer
from psychological conditions including alienation and isolation. Franz Kafka s life, a heartbreaking
story of human conflict, parallels with the main character of metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa.
Franz Kafka was born into a middle class German speaking Jewish family from Prague, Bohemia,
now the Czech Republic. Although Kafka obtained a degree in law, he spent his short adult life
working as a traveling insurance salesman. He considered this job as a bread job , a job performed to
only pay bills. At the time Kafka wrote Metamorphosis he had been employed for four years. In
parallel, Kafka s main character in the Metamorphosis possessed a job as a traveling salesman for four
years to pay off the family debt and support them. He is dissatisfied with his job, which is noted when
he says O God, he thought, what a demanding job I ve chosen, day in, day out on the road... (Kafka
p.612). I have to deal with the problems of traveling, the worries about train connections, irregular bad
food, temporary and constantly changing human relationships, which never came from the hear, To
hell with it all! (Kafka p.612). The metamorphosis of Gregor liberates him from his dreaded job, as
well as, releases him from his financial obligation to his parents.
Kafka s writings are significantly influenced by his conflicted relationships with both his

Fabliaux Style Writing In Geoffrey Chaucer s The...
A fabliaux is a funny story told in verses in the 13th century. Fabliaux were told by storytellers. The
short stories were known for their comical observations on things like religion, remaining pure until
marriage, and how women were treated. The fabliaux style was simple; they made fun of the everyday
lives of characters that were from the middle or lower classes. The storylines were often focused on
promiscuous women and foolish men. It usually showed someone getting cheated on. Also, there
usually was some sort of successful trick in the story. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, he
uses the fabliaux style writing to portray how they viewed women in the medieval period. He shows
how a fabliaux can actually be a satire of a romantic scene. Chaucer displays the fabliaux style writing
in the stories of The Reeve s Tale, The Merchant s Tale, and The Miller s Tale.
In the Reeve s Tale, John and Alan went to the miller s house to use the mill. The miller says they can
stay the night in his small house, but his family and the two college boys will all be staying in the
same room, but in different beds. The miller and his wife would be in one bed with a cradle for their
baby below it, John and Alan in another bed, and their daughter in the third. The two boys wanted
revenge on the miller because he had shortened them some flour; he decides to have sexual
intercourse three times with the daughter. Then, they move around the cradle which is used as the

originally meant to be placed to the South of the White House, and the West of the Capitol Building.

it was moved to the East to accommodate. The monument was originally designed by Robert Mills,

In October 1970, Canada faced a pressing terrorist attack in Montreal, Quebec by a group known as
the Front de Liberation du Quebec, or the FLQ for short. The group committed multiple attacks
starting in 1963 that slowly escalated until the October Crisis, where they kidnapped two government
officials and proceeded to murder one of them. The Canadian government responded harshly and
rapidly. The prime minister of Canada, Pierre Trudeau, issued the War Measures Act which along with
various things allowed the police and military full reign to arrest people and hold them with no

Some of these demands were a reading of the manifesto on public radio, a half million dollar ransom,
and the release of several convicted or detained FLQ members . The government refused to release the
FLQ members, but did read the manifesto on public radio and select newspapers printed the
manifesto. However, this was not enough for the FLQ and they kidnapped and shortly killed the
provincial cabinet minister Pierre LaPorte. James Cross remained kidnapped until December 1970,
when the police found his holding cell.
The government responded aggressively to the kidnapping of both James Cross and Pierre LaPorte.
After LaPorte s body was found in a car by the Montreal airport, the government requested assistance
from the Canadian Armed Forces . The federal government proclaimed the existence of a state of
apprehended insurrection under the War Measures Act . Under these emergency regulations, the FLQ
was outlawed and membership became a criminal act . The liberties of citizens were also suspended,
and arrests and detentions were authorized without a charge . During the War Measures Act, the
military was patrolling the streets and police forces were given additional freedom, while the liberties
of citizens were taken away. One way that the police force was given further freedom is they had the
freedom to search and detain anyone they wanted without stating a reason. Through this

Characteristics Of Paul Brown
Paul Brown is one of the most well known coaches ever. He is a hall of fame coach who led the
Cleveland Browns to dominance in the 1940s and 1950s. In high school, he coached a powerhouse
team that had very good success. He then went on to College and the NFL. After his career In
Cleveland, he went to the Cincinnati Bengals where he achieved some success and even had the
stadium named after him. Gladwell defines certain characteristics in the book Outliers that make
people successful and an outlier. Paul brown Exemplifies many of these ideas. Paul Brown was a
coach for many years. Brown was one of the best coaches ever and he did great things that weren t just
in football. His work ethic on playbooks and classroom techniques make him one of the most well
known coaches of all time (Barnes). Brown is an Outlier because he exemplifies 10,000 hours of
work/practice, he exemplifies the Mathew effect, and he had opportunity for meaningful work.
Paul Brown knew the game so well that he got inducted into the Hall of Fame, which proves he gave
his job all he had and became a well known outlier. Practice isn t the thing you do once you re good, It
s the thing you do that makes you good (Gladwell 171). Paul Brown exemplifies this quote so much.
All the Outsiders in the world know what it takes to reach their goal of success. Brown coached a
powerhouse high school team for nine years. During this time, he won two championships with them.

Themes Of Life And War In Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five
Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five explores the variety of themes of life and war. Vonnegut s story
centers around a character named Billy Pilgrim who strongly resembles Vonnegut. His war
experiences cause him to write this novel and express the horrors and tragedies of war. He uses
characters like Pilgrim to explain human reactions to death and traumatic events. The use of these
characters to express an anti war feeling lasts from cover to cover. His frequent trips to the planet
Tralfamadore in his novel raises brings to light ideas like free will and predestination. Vonnegut
strongly disagrees with predestination, but makes his main character, Billy Pilgrim, a firm believer in
it. By doing this, Billy is basically his lab experiment that shows the dangers in believing in
predestination. The major theme created in this novel is antiwar and other antiwar feelings. For
example, when he is talking to O Hare in the beginning of the novel, Vonnegut says there is nothing
intelligent to say about a massacre (19). And as Cox explains, the novel is not an answer to the tragedy
of war, but a response (Cox 3). Kurt Vonnegut uses the characters in his novel to express his reaction
to the brutalities of war. Billy Pilgrim purpose it to show the awful consequences of war. The time
Billy spends in the war greatly affected him. From his imprisonment, Billy begins to feel nothing

Many Hawaiians felt a deep connection with nature and explained everything from the creation of the
Earth to the lava flowing from the volcanoes and it s importance in their lives and culture. Moana, the
adventurous daughter of the chief of their village, the island of Motuni, goes on a mission to save their
island from perishing through the poison of Te Ka, a volcanic demon, portrayed as the villain
throughout the movie. Because the heart of Te Fitte was stolen by Maui, the shapeshifting demigod,
the islands of Hawaii slowly began deteriorating and livelihoods were affected which prompted
Moana to go on a mission. For Moana, leaving the island not only gave her the opportunity of
exploring the world beyond hers, but also explore herself and find meaning to her existence in the
world. If it wasn t for Moana s love of nature and her people, she wouldn t have left the islands in fear
of upsetting her father. For the people of the island, nature not only provided food, water, medicine,
and shelter but their belief system also revolved around it. The cultural depiction of nature throughout
the movie makes a significant impact to its viewers because it also allows us to understand why nature

Taser Research Proposal Essay
Research Proposal
Tasers
Definition of the Research Problem/Question The research topic we have chosen to research is Tasers.
The use of Tasers has been a very controversial topic in the last few years. Reporters, doctors, and
human rights groups have all expressed concern that police officers will use a Taser in situations when
no weapon is required and concern has also been expressed over if the Taser is really a less lethal
option. No one claims the use of Tasers to be risk free but studies have found them comparatively safe.
We believe that people opposed to Tasers ignore a body of the reports showing the technology is safe
and effective. The research question we hope to answer is: Is the deployment of a Taser a safe and
viable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The media has made this topic a very controversial topic. If there is a story of someone getting tased
anywhere in the United States for anything, including having a weapon in their hand pointed at a law
enforcement officer, it will be on the Ten o clock news top story. The media makes citizens question
law enforcement actions because they only show the part of the story that has the greatest shock
factor. The reporters play the part of the video that makes the point they do not show the complete
video and explain what happened. Another issue that is on the rise is citizens believing that some
suspects that die after being tased is the result of the Taser. This is another problem the media has
created by telling the initial story and flashing Taser death all over the screen and don t do a follow up
story explaining the other reason why the person died that was tased. There is usually a medical
condition involved with the death. If the public does not receive the whole story how can they make
an informed decision if Tasers are a safe and viable option to deadly force.
Relevance
In our research study we hope to show that the goal to Tasers it to provide law enforcement with
alternatives to deadly force in order to minimize harm to both community members and police. We
also want to show that no use of devices or techniques may be safe to everyone, but that we can t look

Emerson And Conformity
The well known essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, exerted his beliefs that conformity is something that
independent individuals should not participate in through out his essay of Self Reliance . The Merriam
Webster dictionary defines conformity as, behavior that is the same as the behavior of most other
people in a society, group, etc. ( Conformity ). Emerson s primary concern with conformity was the
overbearing control that society had on a free individual. I agree that we should not change our morals
and values if pressured from outside forces. However, society, even though it is merely a concept
created by the human brain, is something that holds a country together. Without society, people would
make everyday life very complicated and chaotic. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emerson is trying to explain here that each individual is responsible for accepting information.
Emerson would argue that no one can force any ideas in which you do not agree because they are not
sacred or viewed with accuracy by your own mind. However, when people disagree, they should not
have any feelings of remorse because to be individualistic, the person must outline what he or she
believes and stick to it. I agree with Emerson on the behalf of religious morals because as a Christian,
we are called to keep to our faith, Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For
some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked
(New Living Translation Bible Tim. 1.19). Here, the Bible is showing that sticking to faith and having
a Christian outlook on life is necessary. Without these foundations in our walk with God then our faith
in God will be skewed. So sticking to something that we believe in is a depiction of Emerson s
viewpoint. However, I have internal conflict with Emerson on the basis of nothing is accepted but that
in which we believe. The influential David Meyers showed us that in group bias is basically the
acceptance or support of some group(s) (100). Meyers gives us a great example that not everything
that we accept has to be accepted by our own mind. There are in group biases in which all humans
connect to even though we are oblivious to them most of the time. For example, we might connect
more with people of our race because as a in group bias, those are the people we are around more
often. This is not a racist standpoint but rather an immediate connection with someone who we
unknowingly think is similar to us. Conformity is something that Emerson despises throughout his
essay and it crucial to understand why nonconformity is disliked in

Sushi And Hibachi, Roseville, Minnesota
Osaka Sushi and Hibachi, Roseville, Minnesota, 5PM. Feeling a bit nauseous, nervous, walking up to
the entrance of the restaurant, mother and grandmother a few steps in front of me. Today was the day,
I waited three months for, the day in which I get to try Japanese cuisine. What should be expected?
What if it tastes less than desirable? Will my etiquette be correct? I prepared and researched several
hours in advance regarding this. Once inside the restaurant, following closely, the three of us were
seated at an interesting table; like none of other restaurants in the area. A large, open, flat topped stove
stands in the center, behind it, a chef stands, smiling as we sit down and open the thick menu of food
items. Scanning the chef, noting his tall white hat, his crisply clean white apron, black uniform,
posture, it s not difficult to tell that he had been an employee for a significant amount of time.
Flipping through the menu, it was apparent the variety of sushi, sashimi and nigiri was overwhelming.
Luckily enough, my mother and grandmother came into this with a plan. Initially we ordered our
drinks, personally I ordered a Japanese soda, and when it was brought to the table I was surprised by
the appearance of the bottle alone. A rather curved glass overall, the bottom portion was similar to that
of other bottles of soda made from glass, but your eye drew upward. The similarity to the shape of the

Drinking And Drug Habits For College Students
In my opinion, the E CHUG assessment is very important for college students to complete. The
program was very easy to navigate and initiated deeper thinking about drinking and drug habits in my
own life. I think it was very valuable to go through the different checkpoints of physical and social
effects, monetary costs, and risks of alcohol use because alcohol affects many different factors of
someone s life, and it is important to evaluate and check in with yourself on how each of those factors
of your life are going. For example, I have never really thought about how drinking affected the
amount of money I have to spend on other things I need to have, like textbooks. After completing a
series of questions, the assessment gives you a personalized report on how you compare to other
people with drinking, and how much drinking is affecting your life on a statistical basis. This was
thought provoking and individualized because the statistics are directly correlated to your own life.
While evaluating the comparisons section of my results, I thought it was interesting how
overestimated my guesses on how many students drink heavily and use drugs during a typical week
were. When asked how many students at UW Madison have two drinks or less in a typical week, I
estimated it to be around 40%, while the actual result from surveys resulted in around 25%. Being

Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal Controversy
Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal
I would first like to begin this paper by saying why I decide to chose this topic out of the 3 choices. I
believe that all of the choices were credible and a viable topic in their own regards, but the reason this
one hit home for me was because of the simplicity of the scandal. It s hard to believe that someone
could have made off with the amount of money Bernard did when the idea of a Ponzi scheme was
notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920 after his scandal
created enough issues to make it more aware to the public of what was happening. The fact that this
happened almost 100 years later at the level that it did and where it happened made me extremely
concerned and interested in the topic. In this paper I will cover the details happening up to the scandal,

Chapter Summary Of Sewards Diary
In this chapter the narrative focuses on Sewards diary. On September 17th, Lucy records everything
she can remember in a memorandum to place it somewhere in the house so that someone can find it
the following day although it doesn t happen that way. We see the transformation of Lucy into a super
natural creature and a destructive scene portraying the death of Lucy s mother, unconscious maids,
and Lucy coming close to death with horrible wounds on her neck and in need of more blood. While

The Benefits Of Small Economic Development
We were unable to find any banks with programs to specifically assist in relocating individuals to new
cities for work, although many banks have programs for affordable housing development.
Many large banks and financial institutions provide small business development funding through their
partnerships with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), which operates throughout the
United States.
Bank of America, Cambridge Savings Bank, KeyBank, TD Bank, and M T Bank have active programs
in their service areas to assist small business creation and community development, either through

Comparison of the Sumerian Gods and the Greek Pantheon
Kevin

Professor
Comparison of the Sumerian Gods and the Greek Pantheon The Sumerian civilization existed an
estimated three thousand years prior to the Greeks (Powell p. 60). Although very little is actually
known about the Sumerian culture, archaeologists have unearthed ancient artifacts and clay tablets
containing cuneiform writing that have given historians bits and pieces of the stories that were told
during that time (Powell pg. 63 Figure 7.3). While the Sumerian empire ended thousands of years
before the Greek civilization began, there are striking similarities between the Sumerian gods and the
Greek pantheon, as well as a few differences. First of all, there is a substantial amount of resemblance
between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of the Sumerian cities had a premier god that was worshipped above the others. Although the sky
god was the supreme god, it was not the most worshipped in all cities. This premier god tied to the
successes of the city as well as its fortunes, and was even thought to protect the city from harm. The
deity would be worshipped in a tall pyramid (also known as a ziggurat), which was built in the center
of the city, often on a hill or platform. This is identical to how the Greeks would build temples in
honor of their city s major deity. For example, the Parthenos (Temple of Athena) in Athens was where
the Greek god Athena was worshipped. According to Greek mythology, Athena and another god
Poseidon were in competition to see who would gain control over Athens. Poseidon gave Athens the
gift of a spring, and Athena gave the city the olive. Unfortunately for Poseidon, he was the god of the
seas and his springs were salty and not very useful for the people of Athens. However, the olive was
very useful as it provided food and oil. The olive became the main export of the city, and thus Athena
was heavily worshipped in Athens. Although the stories from the two cultures were similar in many
ways, there were a few noticeable differences. A big difference is the absence of a parallel for the
Greek god Hades. The closest thing to the Sumerians was the goddess Ereshkigal whom was more
reminiscent of Persephone than Hades. Another inequality was the Sumerian god Enki.

Argumentative Essay On Radiocarbon Dating
Radiocarbon dating is a scientific procedure used to calculate the age of dead specimens by the rate of
decay in their levels of C 14. Radiocarbon dating methods are deeply flawed and do not reliably
determine the age of certain fossils or the earth. This is due to the assumptions that they are built upon.
These assumptions include that the conditions on the earth have always been constant and nothing has
ever caused the C 14 levels to fluctuate. These assumptions must be true for radiocarbon dating to be
reliable. However, there is a plethora of evidence showing that these assumptions cannot be trusted.
Radiocarbon dating is a heavily debated topic in the world today. This is primarily due to the powerful
implications it has on people s belief systems. Christians and atheists alike view radiocarbon dating as
important and need to be able to defend or support it. Findings through the process of radiocarbon
dating can help prove or disprove people s beliefs about the world. Radiocarbon dating will always be
a controversial method because of its impact on one s worldview. However, ... Show more content on

For radiocarbon dating to accurately date anything no matter its age, two facts must be accounted for.
The rate of decay of Carbon 14 and the amount of Carbon 14 in the creature at the time of its death
must be known. The rate of decay of Carbon 14 can be determined by its half life, which is around
5,730 years. This means that every 5,730 years the amount of Carbon 14 in an organism is cut in half.
As a result, the amount of Carbon 14 would eventually dissipate to nothing in every organism after its
death. Because of this, radiocarbon dating has a limit to its accuracy. Many times, scientists will claim
that an organism was dated to be many millions of years old. However, according to the half life of
Carbon 14 and the limits that it possesses, this is

Individuality Vs Conformity
It can be seen in our everyday lives how easy it is for people to conform to the social norms of a group
or society. Wayne Dyer once said When you re just like everybody else, you ve nothing to offer other
than your conformity and I believe that this statement couldn t be more accurate. Recently, it has
become more acceptable for people to express their individuality and showing one s true colours is
being promoted. It is better to be a unique individual than to conform to society because conformity
destroys personal growth and development. We need to express our originality and by conforming to
what others want us to be, we squander any chance of achieving self acceptance. People are more
likely to conform is when they are placed in a group setting. An individual will not want to break the
group unanimity so they will conform to whatever decision the group comes to, even if it goes against
their beliefs or values. I firmly believe that if we pay less attention to what others expect of us and
expressing our individuality, we can offer more to society and develop and grow as human beings.

Group conformity can have negative aspects to it when the group one is joining is violent and does
harmful acts. The pressure that comes from group conformity can often lead people to do activities
that they know is wrong or that go against their beliefs and values. Groups often provide a sense of
belonging which is why the members of a group will be more likely to perform unacceptable acts. If
someone were to join a gang, for instance, then they will do whatever they need to in order to feel that
sense of belonging. This is when there can be negative aspects to group conformity, when the group
you are conforming to performs dangerous or illegal activities. However, there are moments when

Remember The Alamo Thesis
Whenever I hear someone say, Remember the Alamo I can t help but think of how Texas won its
Independence from Mexico and changed the entire history of the United States.
In 1836, the Mexican Army being led by the Dictator, President Santa Anna had its sights set on taking
everything that it could from the people of Texas, while in route as they marched their way toward the
San Antonio mission known as the Alamo. The Alamo was one of two fortified missions that were
quickly established as preparation for defense against the Mexican Army which were advancing from
either one or two different main roads that were potential options to them as avenues of approach.

The Hidden Gift Of Being An American Essay
Being able to call yourself an American is a gift, that holds hidden meanings. To me, the definition of
an American is someone who embraces both freedom and the responsibility that comes with it.
America has promised the experience of freedom in race, religion, gender, and the right to express
yourself. Americans know this reality did not occur overnight. Many courageous people fought and
are still fighting for freedom. However, the hidden meaning of behind the reality of being an American
can be demonstrated as greed and longing for wealth or power. This hidden truth is a mask many
Americans may wear, because they are to ashamed to admit how the American Dream is changing into
materials and ethics. The twenty first century is losing the prideful gift of being an American.
Frederick Douglass was a man who fought for his freedom and faced all the responsibilities that came
with it. He was heroic and lionhearted, who had no hidden qualities. Frederick Douglass called out
white Christians for their approval of slavery on religious grounds. He believed, Those who profess to

The Pledge of Allegiance Essay
At the beginning of each day in many public and private schools around the country, students stand
and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. In fact, 35 states have passed laws mandating that the Pledge be
recited on a daily basis. This issue has been a source of controversy for years. On one side of the
argument exists families and educators who believe in the citizenship and patriotism that reciting the
Pledge brings (Chiodo, 2011). On the opposing side, families and educators argue the possible threat
to an individual s First Amendment freedoms. Before analyzing the above described controversy, we
must first examine the history of the Pledge itself. Written by Francis Bellamy, it was originally titled

Author Laurie Bennett explains that, In the aftermath [...] people were hungry for social rituals and
eager to communicate a deeper sense of national belonging. They looked for symbols and rituals that
could unite them and forge bonds of community anew (Bennett, 2004). One such ritual was the Pledge
of Allegiance, which President George Bush led the entire nation in just days after 9/11. Many state
legislatures also looked for ways to access strength and unity by integrating themes of patriotism into
the public schools. This increased emphasis on patriotic exercise, although stemming somewhat from
the 9/11 crisis, also came from other sources as well. Many authors and policymakers have expressed
concern about the decline in civil engagement or attention to public life in the U.S. population
generally, and among young people in particular. A Subcommittee on Civic Education of the federal
judiciary has noted that a high level of civic disengagement, especially among the young, demands a
re commitment to education for active and effective citizenship (Bennett, 2004). Therefore, many state
governments have embraced the mandating of the Pledge in order to accomplish such a
recommitment. Supporters of daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in classrooms claim that the
rote and compulsory aspects of the Pledge are in fact beneficial. They see the rote recitation of the

which a computer accesses the Internet and the globally unique identifier (GUID) number assigned to
each computer using particular software. The IP address of the computer is displayed as part of the file

Socrates Was An Athens A Greek Philosopher

Philosophy
October 6,2015
Socrates was an Athens, Greece born man, who is credited as one of the main founders of Western
Philosophy. Socrates never wrote any of his thoughts and experiences down, so we just know and
analyze Socrates through the dialogues of his greatest apostle, Plato. Although, the dialogues written
by Plato are not totally focused on summarizing Socrates life, but more about his teachings and
examining of others, you never really learn how Socrates lived in an everyday life. He appeared to be
a very simple man, with not many possessions or riches to his name. Socrates never did participate in
political reform in Greece, but rather choose to converse with every day Athenians to analyze and
instruct them about virtue and examination. He based his life off the simplicity of understanding
virtues and the search for wisdom. His quest for wisdom and the instruction of others through dialogue
seem to be Socrates most important aim in life. His questioning and examining ended up getting him
in trouble, as explained through The Apology, Socrates was brought in front of a jury with charges of
not recognizing the gods recognized by the state, of inventing new deities, and of corrupting the youth
of Athens. The case ended with him being charged as guilty, and instead of accepting exile for this rest
of his life; he chose death by drinking hemlock poison. In The Apology, Socrates claims the

Good By Muse
The first song I am deconstructing is the original Feeling Good by Nina Simone. This song was
recorded in 1965 when jazz, swing and soul music was very popular amongst American and African
American artists. The song is classified as rock influenced by the styles of jazz, swing and soul. At the
very beginning of the song, the low alto female voice is heard with no accompanying instruments. The
singing style includes the use of melismas and vibrato. When the song reaches the chorus, brass
instruments playing a low pitched riff are introduced with the piano playing high pitched notes. This is
continued throughout the second verse. At the second chorus s, strings are added to the piano part. In

This song was recorded in 2001, 36 years after the original was released. Muse is known as an
alternative band, but this song s styles include heavy rock and progressive rock. At the start of the
song, the singer is singing softly, with the overall texture of the song being quite thin. The voice is
accompanied by a soft electronic sound and a soft guitar playing the riff. At around the chorus, the
guitars begin to play loudly and the singing style becomes more aggressive. Drums are introduced
thickening the texture of the song. These drums, along with the distorted guitars, loud singing style
and the thick texture are the heavy rock influences found in the song. These heavy rock influences are
found throughout the song. After the chorus, in the second verse, the singing style is changed to an
almost electronic voice. The frequent changes of mood, dynamics, styles and tempo and the use of
recording techniques are some of the progressive rock influences found in the song. These occur in the
second verse of the song. The guitars back off and the texture thins with just the piano and drums
playing softly. When the song comes to the second chorus, it returns to the same timbre and dynamics
as the first chorus. At the bridge, improvisation by the lead singer is heard with just the bass guitar
playing the riff. This decrescendos until there is nothing heard and the song ends. The use

The anomaly which I have identified at 40°C is 0.41 arbitrary units this could be due to the size of the

such as administrative and financial functionality. Additionally, these guidelines outline the ways in
which mapping rules should comply with or override GEMs. As previously stated, GEMs should be
utilized as a guide, not a stringent directive, to aid in code conversion. Therefore, mappings identified
by the GEMs can either be accepted, overridden by selecting a different approximate match or
combination code, overridden by selecting target codes from a different GEM option, or overridden by
rejecting all GEM suggestions and selecting or creating a new mapping not listed (De, 2012). All
mapping selections must be agreed upon by the mapping team; therefore, all individual mappings need
to include justification for the codes selected in order to aid in interpretation during review (De,

Psychopathy and Crime Essay
Psychopathy is a disease of the mind, in which the psychological state of someone has emotional or
behavioral problems serious enough to require psychiatric evaluation. Psychopaths have no concern
for the feelings of others and a complete disregard of any sense of social obligation. Psychopaths are
characterized by lack of empathy, poor impulse control and manipulative behaviors. They use charm,
manipulation, intimidation, and the use of severe to mild violence to satisfy their own needs.
Psychopathy is derived from two Greek words: psych, meaning soul, and pathos, meaning suffering.
They were once used to explain any form of mental illness. Psychopathy was recognized in the early

disorder kicks in. Psychopaths that have been put in jail committed three times as many crimes per
year then non psychopaths. 97% of convicted psychopathic criminals cause at least one violent crime
compared to 74% of non psychopaths. Psychopaths are shown to be more violence throughout their
entire life compared to a regular people. Psychopaths tend to have a greater chance of failing on parole

Mate Choice And Species Recognition Amongst D. Simulans
Mate Choice and Species Recognition amongst D. simulans and D. mauritiana
Brittany Wordekemper

Ecology and Evolution Lab
Emily Hudson
Abstract
Sexual selection is a kind of natural selection that happened to come about through a specific
preference by one sex for definite characteristics in individuals of the opposite sex. When it comes to
choosing a mate, mate choice is very important for individuals to avoid mating with the wrong species
but it also operates within a species as well. The species used for this experiment were D. simulans
and D. mauritiana, two species which are very closely related to D. melanogaster. D. simulans and D.
mauritiana are also closely related and tend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, mate choice is extremely important for individuals to avoid mating with the wrong species
but it also operates within a species as well. This tendency to avoid heterospecific mates is called
behavioral isolation. Mate choice can be important in the evolutionary process, speciation, in which
populations of conspecific diverge into separate species (Ecology and Evolution Behavior Lab
Packet). It is extremely beneficial, mostly to females, to be choosy. Being choosy is a major element
of sexual selection because by choosing the male with the most desirable traits, the offspring of the
female end up benefiting due to receiving the best genes possible. Species that are very closely related
are more likely to evolve resilient species discrimination due to the emphasis of preferences amongst
mates. The cost of fitness of heterospecific matings have been thought to be higher in the females than
in the males. The reason being that the females are investing more resources into the offspring where
as the males are not, so if the females happen to mate with the wrong species and all of the offspring
die or become sterile, this ends up being a huge waste of resources for females as opposed to males
who would not being losing out on much at all. A consequence of the higher cost of fitness for
heterospecific matings would be that females are more likely to show stronger species

Despite his mother (Adrienne) leaving her 12 children behind to find a job down in New Orleans.

Hernan Cortes Analysis
Hernan Cortes s first encounter narrative, besides justifying his illegal trip to Mexico, displays the
cultural and spiritual roles colonization played when he conquered the Aztecs. Cortes displays a very
eurocentric outlook, for they had left their native land so long ago and as I had only recently arrived
from there, I would better know the things they should believe (Cortes 58), the native land (Cortes 58)
Cartes refers to is Europe. With this idea that Europe being the nucleus of the world signifies that
Cortes has a cultural and religious duty to return these long lost Europeans back to the fold. Cortes
having painted his view of the world creates a sense of belonging for him and all of Spain, in that
since all life orginates in Europe all life and prosperity in the world is simply waiting to be plundered.
He goes about this plundering by using Christianity as a moral justification for the colonization of the
native population. He begins by destroying idols (Cortes 58) and setting up images , presumably of
Christ, God, or The Virgin Mary, as they are superior to that of the natives and simply is what they
should believe (Cortes 58) . This narrative of cultural and spiritual superiority is echoed in John
Heckewelder s retelling of the Lenni Lenape (Heckewelder 68) colonization myth wherein a group of
Dutch missionaries visit the new world and are revered as God s. Before they depart they distribute
gifts among the natives of beads, axes, hoes, and stockings only to return on their second voyage to
see the natives wearing them as ornaments (Heckewelder 70) wherein the whites laughed . Now
Heckewelder s purpose in relaying this oral tradition is very similar to Cortes s it s to display the
cultural and spiritual superiority of the Christian in helping the natives for they are too stupid to help
themselves. Where they differ is that in the Lenni Lenape (Heckewelder 68) tradition this colonization
myth ,for me, serves as a warning to the tribe. For while Heckewelder s original intention was most
likely to display European superiority whether advertently or inadvertently it s original intention was
to serve as a warning where if the Lenni Lenape (Heckewelder 68) continued to allow the

  • 2. Pulstar Research Papers Pulsars are highly magnetised, rapidly spinning (the spin period ranging from a few milliseconds to a few seconds) neutron stars, which are the end products of the evolutionary stages of massive stars after supernova explosions. As the star collapses, the density becomes large, giving rise to a star consisting mainly of neutrons, with $sim$ 1.4 {Msun} and a radius of $sim$ 10 km citep{Lattimer13}. They have inferred surface magnetic fields of the order of 10$^{11}$ $10^{13}$ G citep{Beskin}, and are the most directly observable remnants of dead stars in the Universe. Pulsar studies began in 1967 when Jocelyn Bell and Antony Hewish serendipitously discovered strange regular flashes of energy emanating from distinct parts of the sky via ... Furthermore when someone asked him why he didn t wish for another wife. He said, Not likely. ....I ll stay faithful to Leita. (page 318) In addition, he was also loyal when he didn t use his third wish after he told the king of the forest he wouldn t. I shall do neither, said Mr. Peters calmly.. This historical organization is guided by dedicated educators teaching in the field of agriscience. Agriscience educators are in high demand in Alabama and across the nation. Agriscience educators teach in a project based learning environment that reaches all students by teaching about innovative agricultural topics and working with new technology all while traveling across the state and country with the FFA. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In conjunction with the FFA Organization, agriscience educators help students conduct Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). These experiences are based on student interest and designed to give the student an opportunity to build skills related to an agriscience career. One example of an SAE would be working with a mentor to learn about poultry or hay production. Project based learning happens every day in an ag classroom. Students gain knowledge and career skills related to welding, construction, and even electrical work by conducting hands on learning activities guided by an agriscience educators. Project based learning is not new. It is a concept that agriscience education has built its foundation on. Not every student thrives in a traditional four walled, 30 desk classroom with a person giving a lecture. Many students feel lost in this learning setting. Agriscience education has the unique ability to reach many of those students who aren t successful in a traditional classroom. Students have different learning styles. For example, one student might have an auditory learning style which means that he or she learns best by hearing. Another student might be a visual learner which means they learn by seeing. For many who find success in agriscience, it is clear that they are tactile learners. Daniel had to take part in a pagan education, put up with being called a pagan name, and eating pagan food. • 7. Compare And Contrast Galileo And Paine Language has been an important part of an individual s life in order to communicate and understand one another. However, Bacon, Galileo and Paine believe that language beyond the means of communication can hinder our own understanding as sometimes can be. Language has fooled the human mind to understanding the world without the idea of reasoning and rational thinking. In Bacon s Novum Organum, especially in the Idols of the Market, he talks about how language can create confusion rather than understanding through the random use of words. Nothing only does words create confusion but lead mankind into vain and innumerable controversies and fallacies (34). Man is unable to form specific words because of the lack of attention to nature and the usage of words that is difficult to define in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He points out in his Letter to Christina of Tuscany that words differ by the context of their meaning especially in the written Scriptures in order to accommodate every population. He argues that words do not mean what they are out to be and which appear to differ from the absolute truth so far as the bare meaning of the words is concerned (18). Galileo argues that some of the biblical passages should not be taken literally because some have different meaning beneath their words. Lastly, Paine claims in his writing of The Age of Reason, God s message cannot be in language due to its incapable of interpretation in different languages which prevent others to understand what the Bible ought to say. This is all done by a revelation which presents a problem on what the word truly means as something communicated immediately from God to man (162). This inhibits understanding because not everything is given through first hand experience but rather hearsay from others. Language rather than giving providing clear understanding, unfortunately brings confusion that leads to fallacies and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The North Korean People s Army At 4:00am on June 25, 1950, the North Korean People s Army (NKPA) crossed the 38th parallel in force and invaded South Korea with the objective of unifying the two Koreas into a single communist nation. General Douglas MacArthur would once again prove his value as a military commander with his conception of Operation Chromite, which directed how the UN forces would respond. MacArthur s unique gift in recognizing strategic opportunities, along with America s ability to quickly gather military assets and counter in force, were key to the success of the Operation Chromite landings at Inchon and turning the tide of the Korean War. From the moment their invasion began, NKPA experienced success against the UN forces, led by the United States and sent in to assist the South Korean Army. However, UN troops, all of which were now under the command of General MacArthur, were literally overwhelmed at the onslaught of the well equipped and experienced NKPA. By the end of July, UN forces had been driven into a small area in the southeast portion of the Korean Pennisula around the Port of Pusan (present day Busan). With the NKPA at their front, and the Sea of Japan at their back, UN forces were in dire straight and running out of options. Only the visionary mind of General MacArthur conceptualizing and executing Operation Chromite could avoid a military disaster and save South Korea. • 9. Metamorphosis Kafka Analysis The title of the story The Metamorphosis , by Franz Kafka is misleading. Merriam Webster defines metamorphosis as the change of physical form, structure or substance, especially by supernatural means, a striking alteration in appearance, character or circumstance . While there is an obvious change in the appearance of the character Gregor Samsa, it becomes apparent after reading the story, that his appearance is not the only thing that transforms. In the story, Gregor wakes up one morning to realize that he has changed into a giant insect. Not only did he transform into a creature, but he was also stripped of his humanity. The author Franz Kafka uses this symbolism to focus the reader s attention on one character that mirrors himself and his life. Both Kafka and Gregor are traveling salesman from Prague, experience dysfunctional personal relationships throughout their life and suffer from psychological conditions including alienation and isolation. Franz Kafka s life, a heartbreaking story of human conflict, parallels with the main character of metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa. Franz Kafka was born into a middle class German speaking Jewish family from Prague, Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. Although Kafka obtained a degree in law, he spent his short adult life working as a traveling insurance salesman. He considered this job as a bread job , a job performed to only pay bills. At the time Kafka wrote Metamorphosis he had been employed for four years. In parallel, Kafka s main character in the Metamorphosis possessed a job as a traveling salesman for four years to pay off the family debt and support them. He is dissatisfied with his job, which is noted when he says O God, he thought, what a demanding job I ve chosen, day in, day out on the road... (Kafka p.612). I have to deal with the problems of traveling, the worries about train connections, irregular bad food, temporary and constantly changing human relationships, which never came from the hear, To hell with it all! (Kafka p.612). The metamorphosis of Gregor liberates him from his dreaded job, as well as, releases him from his financial obligation to his parents. • 10. Fabliaux Style Writing In Geoffrey Chaucer s The... A fabliaux is a funny story told in verses in the 13th century. Fabliaux were told by storytellers. The short stories were known for their comical observations on things like religion, remaining pure until marriage, and how women were treated. The fabliaux style was simple; they made fun of the everyday lives of characters that were from the middle or lower classes. The storylines were often focused on promiscuous women and foolish men. It usually showed someone getting cheated on. Also, there usually was some sort of successful trick in the story. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, he uses the fabliaux style writing to portray how they viewed women in the medieval period. He shows how a fabliaux can actually be a satire of a romantic scene. Chaucer displays the fabliaux style writing in the stories of The Reeve s Tale, The Merchant s Tale, and The Miller s Tale. In the Reeve s Tale, John and Alan went to the miller s house to use the mill. The miller says they can stay the night in his small house, but his family and the two college boys will all be staying in the same room, but in different beds. The miller and his wife would be in one bed with a cradle for their baby below it, John and Alan in another bed, and their daughter in the third. The Canadian government responded harshly and rapidly. Vonnegut s story centers around a character named Billy Pilgrim who strongly resembles Vonnegut. His war experiences cause him to write this novel and express the horrors and tragedies of war. He uses characters like Pilgrim to explain human reactions to death and traumatic events. The use of these characters to express an anti war feeling lasts from cover to cover. His frequent trips to the planet Tralfamadore in his novel raises brings to light ideas like free will and predestination. Vonnegut strongly disagrees with predestination, but makes his main character, Billy Pilgrim, a firm believer in it. By doing this, Billy is basically his lab experiment that shows the dangers in believing in predestination. The major theme created in this novel is antiwar and other antiwar feelings. For example, when he is talking to O Hare in the beginning of the novel, Vonnegut says there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre (19). And as Cox explains, the novel is not an answer to the tragedy of war, but a response (Cox 3). Kurt Vonnegut uses the characters in his novel to express his reaction to the brutalities of war. The use of Tasers has been a very controversial topic in the last few years. Reporters, doctors, and human rights groups have all expressed concern that police officers will use a Taser in situations when no weapon is required and concern has also been expressed over if the Taser is really a less lethal option. No one claims the use of Tasers to be risk free but studies have found them comparatively safe. The media makes citizens question law enforcement actions because they only show the part of the story that has the greatest shock factor. The reporters play the part of the video that makes the point they do not show the complete video and explain what happened. Another issue that is on the rise is citizens believing that some suspects that die after being tased is the result of the Taser. • 17. Emerson And Conformity The well known essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, exerted his beliefs that conformity is something that independent individuals should not participate in through out his essay of Self Reliance . The Merriam Webster dictionary defines conformity as, behavior that is the same as the behavior of most other people in a society, group, etc. ( Conformity ). Emerson s primary concern with conformity was the overbearing control that society had on a free individual. I agree that we should not change our morals and values if pressured from outside forces. However, society, even though it is merely a concept created by the human brain, is something that holds a country together. Without society, people would make everyday life very complicated and chaotic. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emerson is trying to explain here that each individual is responsible for accepting information. Emerson would argue that no one can force any ideas in which you do not agree because they are not sacred or viewed with accuracy by your own mind. However, when people disagree, they should not have any feelings of remorse because to be individualistic, the person must outline what he or she believes and stick to it. I agree with Emerson on the behalf of religious morals because as a Christian, we are called to keep to our faith, Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked (New Living Translation Bible Tim. 1.19). Here, the Bible is showing that sticking to faith and having a Christian outlook on life is necessary. Without these foundations in our walk with God then our faith in God will be skewed. So sticking to something that we believe in is a depiction of Emerson s viewpoint. However, I have internal conflict with Emerson on the basis of nothing is accepted but that in which we believe. The influential David Meyers showed us that in group bias is basically the acceptance or support of some group(s) (100). Meyers gives us a great example that not everything that we accept has to be accepted by our own mind. There are in group biases in which all humans connect to even though we are oblivious to them most of the time. For example, we might connect more with people of our race because as a in group bias, those are the people we are around more often. This is not a racist standpoint but rather an immediate connection with someone who we unknowingly think is similar to us. Conformity is something that Emerson despises throughout his essay and it crucial to understand why nonconformity is disliked in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Feeling a bit nauseous, nervous, walking up to the entrance of the restaurant, mother and grandmother a few steps in front of me. Today was the day, I waited three months for, the day in which I get to try Japanese cuisine. What should be expected? What if it tastes less than desirable? Will my etiquette be correct? I prepared and researched several hours in advance regarding this. Once inside the restaurant, following closely, the three of us were seated at an interesting table; like none of other restaurants in the area. A large, open, flat topped stove stands in the center, behind it, a chef stands, smiling as we sit down and open the thick menu of food items. Scanning the chef, noting his tall white hat, his crisply clean white apron, black uniform, posture, it s not difficult to tell that he had been an employee for a significant amount of time. Flipping through the menu, it was apparent the variety of sushi, sashimi and nigiri was overwhelming. Luckily enough, my mother and grandmother came into this with a plan. Initially we ordered our drinks, personally I ordered a Japanese soda, and when it was brought to the table I was surprised by the appearance of the bottle alone. A rather curved glass overall, the bottom portion was similar to that of other bottles of soda made from glass, but your eye drew upward. The program was very easy to navigate and initiated deeper thinking about drinking and drug habits in my own life. I think it was very valuable to go through the different checkpoints of physical and social effects, monetary costs, and risks of alcohol use because alcohol affects many different factors of someone s life, and it is important to evaluate and check in with yourself on how each of those factors of your life are going. For example, I have never really thought about how drinking affected the amount of money I have to spend on other things I need to have, like textbooks. After completing a series of questions, the assessment gives you a personalized report on how you compare to other people with drinking, and how much drinking is affecting your life on a statistical basis. This was thought provoking and individualized because the statistics are directly correlated to your own life. While evaluating the comparisons section of my results, I thought it was interesting how overestimated my guesses on how many students drink heavily and use drugs during a typical week were. When asked how many students at UW Madison have two drinks or less in a typical week, I estimated it to be around 40%, while the actual result from surveys resulted in around 25%. I believe that all of the choices were credible and a viable topic in their own regards, but the reason this one hit home for me was because of the simplicity of the scandal. It s hard to believe that someone could have made off with the amount of money Bernard did when the idea of a Ponzi scheme was notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920 after his scandal created enough issues to make it more aware to the public of what was happening. The fact that this happened almost 100 years later at the level that it did and where it happened made me extremely concerned and interested in the topic. In this paper I will cover the details happening up to the scandal, the scandal itself, the people involved in the scandal, the legislation and regulations implemented after the scandal, and my views on the outcome of the scandal. Bernard Madoff was born April 29th, 1928 in Queens, New York. He grew up as a son of two Jewish parents, one of which was a stockbroker. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1960 with a degree in Political Science and then moved on to attend Brooklyn Law School where he dropped out to start and pursue his own company, Bernard L. Comparison of the Sumerian Gods and the Greek Pantheon Kevin November 6, 2013 Professor Comparison of the Sumerian Gods and the Greek Pantheon The Sumerian civilization existed an estimated three thousand years prior to the Greeks (Powell p. 60). Although very little is actually known about the Sumerian culture, archaeologists have unearthed ancient artifacts and clay tablets containing cuneiform writing that have given historians bits and pieces of the stories that were told during that time (Powell pg. 63 Figure 7.3). Although the sky god was the supreme god, it was not the most worshipped in all cities. This premier god tied to the successes of the city as well as its fortunes, and was even thought to protect the city from harm. The deity would be worshipped in a tall pyramid (also known as a ziggurat), which was built in the center of the city, often on a hill or platform. This is identical to how the Greeks would build temples in honor of their city s major deity. For example, the Parthenos (Temple of Athena) in Athens was where the Greek god Athena was worshipped. According to Greek mythology, Athena and another god Poseidon were in competition to see who would gain control over Athens. Poseidon gave Athens the gift of a spring, and Athena gave the city the olive. Unfortunately for Poseidon, he was the god of the seas and his springs were salty and not very useful for the people of Athens. However, the olive was very useful as it provided food and oil. The olive became the main export of the city, and thus Athena was heavily worshipped in Athens. Although the stories from the two cultures were similar in many ways, there were a few noticeable differences. A big difference is the absence of a parallel for the Greek god Hades. The closest thing to the Sumerians was the goddess Ereshkigal whom was more reminiscent of Persephone than Hades. Another inequality was the Sumerian god Enki. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Argumentative Essay On Radiocarbon Dating Radiocarbon dating is a scientific procedure used to calculate the age of dead specimens by the rate of decay in their levels of C 14. Radiocarbon dating methods are deeply flawed and do not reliably determine the age of certain fossils or the earth. This is due to the assumptions that they are built upon. These assumptions include that the conditions on the earth have always been constant and nothing has ever caused the C 14 levels to fluctuate. These assumptions must be true for radiocarbon dating to be reliable. However, there is a plethora of evidence showing that these assumptions cannot be trusted. Radiocarbon dating is a heavily debated topic in the world today. This is primarily due to the powerful implications it has on people s belief systems. Christians and atheists alike view radiocarbon dating as important and need to be able to defend or support it. Findings through the process of radiocarbon dating can help prove or disprove people s beliefs about the world. For radiocarbon dating to accurately date anything no matter its age, two facts must be accounted for. The rate of decay of Carbon 14 and the amount of Carbon 14 in the creature at the time of its death must be known. As a result, the amount of Carbon 14 would eventually dissipate to nothing in every organism after its death. Because of this, radiocarbon dating has a limit to its accuracy. Wayne Dyer once said When you re just like everybody else, you ve nothing to offer other than your conformity and I believe that this statement couldn t be more accurate. Recently, it has become more acceptable for people to express their individuality and showing one s true colours is being promoted. It is better to be a unique individual than to conform to society because conformity destroys personal growth and development. We need to express our originality and by conforming to what others want us to be, we squander any chance of achieving self acceptance. People are more likely to conform is when they are placed in a group setting. An individual will not want to break the group unanimity so they will conform to whatever decision the group comes to, even if it goes against their beliefs or values. Socrates never wrote any of his thoughts and experiences down, so we just know and analyze Socrates through the dialogues of his greatest apostle, Plato. Although, the dialogues written by Plato are not totally focused on summarizing Socrates life, but more about his teachings and examining of others, you never really learn how Socrates lived in an everyday life. Evaluation of Practical Work: The anomaly which I have identified at 40°C is 0.41 arbitrary units this could be due to the size of the sample of beetroot used, if the sample was smaller than the other samples it was have less pigment which would suggested why the result is lower than expected. Another suggestion for why the result is lower than expected could be due to the loss of pigment in the preparation process, or from where the sample was taken from on the beetroot. If the sample was taken from the centre of the beetroot the sample may have had more pigment contained within the cells, but if the sample was taken from closer to the surface of the beetroot it ... Simulans Mate Choice and Species Recognition amongst D. simulans and D. mauritiana Brittany Wordekemper February 23, 2016 Ecology and Evolution Lab Emily Hudson Abstract Sexual selection is a kind of natural selection that happened to come about through a specific preference by one sex for definite characteristics in individuals of the opposite sex. When it comes to choosing a mate, mate choice is very important for individuals to avoid mating with the wrong species but it also operates within a species as well. Therefore, mate choice is extremely important for individuals to avoid mating with the wrong species but it also operates within a species as well. This tendency to avoid heterospecific mates is called behavioral isolation. Mate choice can be important in the evolutionary process, speciation, in which populations of conspecific diverge into separate species (Ecology and Evolution Behavior Lab Packet). It is extremely beneficial, mostly to females, to be choosy. Being choosy is a major element of sexual selection because by choosing the male with the most desirable traits, the offspring of the female end up benefiting due to receiving the best genes possible. Species that are very closely related are more likely to evolve resilient species discrimination due to the emphasis of preferences amongst mates. The cost of fitness of heterospecific matings have been thought to be higher in the females than in the males. The reason being that the females are investing more resources into the offspring where as the males are not, so if the females happen to mate with the wrong species and all of the offspring die or become sterile, this ends up being a huge waste of resources for females as opposed to males who would not being losing out on much at all. A consequence of the higher cost of fitness for heterospecific matings would be that females are more likely to show stronger species ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Hernan Cortes Analysis Hernan Cortes s first encounter narrative, besides justifying his illegal trip to Mexico, displays the cultural and spiritual roles colonization played when he conquered the Aztecs. Cortes displays a very eurocentric outlook, for they had left their native land so long ago and as I had only recently arrived from there, I would better know the things they should believe (Cortes 58), the native land (Cortes 58) Cartes refers to is Europe. With this idea that Europe being the nucleus of the world signifies that Cortes has a cultural and religious duty to return these long lost Europeans back to the fold. Cortes having painted his view of the world creates a sense of belonging for him and all of Spain, in that since all life orginates in Europe all life and prosperity in the world is simply waiting to be plundered. He goes about this plundering by using Christianity as a moral justification for the colonization of the native population. He begins by destroying idols (Cortes 58) and setting up images , presumably of Christ, God, or The Virgin Mary, as they are superior to that of the natives and simply is what they should believe (Cortes 58) . This narrative of cultural and spiritual superiority is echoed in John Heckewelder s retelling of the Lenni Lenape (Heckewelder 68) colonization myth wherein a group of Dutch missionaries visit the new world and are revered as God s. Before they depart they distribute gifts among the natives of beads, axes, hoes, and stockings only to return on their second voyage to see the natives wearing them as ornaments (Heckewelder 70) wherein the whites laughed . Now Heckewelder s purpose in relaying this oral tradition is very similar to Cortes s it s to display the cultural and spiritual superiority of the Christian in helping the natives for they are too stupid to help themselves. Where they differ is that in the Lenni Lenape (Heckewelder 68) tradition this colonization myth ,for me, serves as a warning to the tribe. For while Heckewelder s original intention was most likely to display European superiority whether advertently or inadvertently it s original intention was to serve as a warning where if the Lenni Lenape (Heckewelder 68) continued to allow the ...
