Militarism Against The Vietnam War
Songs often reflect or critique the ideologies of their time period. However, the songs are not bound to
the specific time period in which they are created because the ideologies they reflect or critique are
also not bound to a specific context. These residual ideologies are created in the past, but still acting as
an effective element of the present (Williams). The song Masters of War is a song that falls into this
category; in 1963, the song Masters of War was written by Bob Dylan as a response to the antiwar
movement against the Vietnam War, and in 2004, Pearl Jam applied the antiwar sentiment of the song
to the context of the war on terrorism. In both time periods, the dominant ideology of militarism that

The terror attacks on September 11, 2001, introduced a new form of enemy and in response, the
government invoked the residual ideology of militarism to combat this enemy instead of turning to an
emergent ideology, or a new, creative way of facing this new enemy. The Bush administration
declared the war on terrorism and in solidarity with those affected by the terror attacks, the public
supported the government s actions (Foner). However, the enemy of this war was loosely defined as
those who hate freedom and the board definition included all terrorist groups around the world that
poses a threat to the Western world and the freedom it represents (Foner). The first act of war under
the war on terrorism was when the Taliban, the terrorist group responsible for the tragedy on
September 11, refused to give up its leader Osama bin Laden and the United States responded with air
strikes (Foner). To the public, this military action against Afghanistan and the Taliban seemed justified
because the Taliban was the group responsible for the terror attacks. However, with the enemy so
ambiguously defined and without a clear agenda, the government was able to take free rein of the
direction of the war and possible self interest came into play. The government identified the axis of
evil as Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, and claimed that these three countries harbored weapons of mass
destruction, or nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and planned to use these weapons on the
United States; this claim was not supported by evidence (Foner). As the United States went to war
with Iraq under this unjustified accusation, dissent rose around the world and many suspected that the
true intention was to fight for control over the world s second largest oil reserves in Iraq (Foner).
These antiwar protests around the world set the context for Pearl Jam s 2004 cover of Masters of War

Consumerism Speech
How many times would you say you thought, I need that bag, or those shoes because everyone else
has them? How many people do you speak to that know who you are as a person and not just the
things you like or the types of food you don t eat. Is it possible that you could, unwillingly and
unintentionally be superficial? Good morning everyone and welcome to the mindset of modern
society, materialistic and consumer driven. Today, the desirable consumerist lifestyle outweighs the
instinct of compassion, which only proves my point that the inherent values of consumerism force you
all; yes you, to be insensitive. The Australian poet Bruce Dawe wrote The Not So Good Earth during
the Vietnam War, about these values influencing the response ... Show more content on

Twice? Three times? Does it end? The colloquialisms in the poem only further denote the inextricable
link of consumerism to relationships. When it is linked this closely to people, the very nature of their
interaction is shaped into a shallow never ending cycle of meaningless expression. The falseness of
communication today is directly linked to the consumerist lifestyle and has been increasing since the
late 1880 s. Clancy of the Overflow not only depicts the city as a giant symbol of materialism, but also
portrays the townsfolk as having eager eyes and greedy stating that they have no time to grow, they
have no time to waste . This statement is indicative of the busyness of people s lives and negligence of
other humans. Similarly, when Paterson wrote As they shoulder one another in their rush and nervous
haste he shows the carelessness of people affected by consumerism in this era, which has only
increased from the time of Paterson to the time of Dawe, and furthermore to present day. What can we
do to change? What can we do to stop this perpetual chain of meaningless things, people and
interactions? It begins with the consumer mindset; this is what influences our identity, and our
communications. When consumerism becomes something we understand and acknowledge we can
then bring about change in relationships and eventually

Essay On Pediatric Technician
Everyday, children become get into accidents or become ill and need medical attention. Whether these
children are taken to a hospital, or urgent care. A Pediatric nurse will tend to them. I desire to become
a Pediatrician because I m interested in children s health. I would like to do medical research in this
field as well as to practice Pediatric. Pediatricians are specialized medical doctors that focus on
children. They diagnose and treat them from the infant stage to adult stage. Pediatricians deal with

With all the paper work and rising cost it can sometimes be very frustrating. As a Pediatrician he/she
will always need to remain calm when dealing with the children or the children s parents. In some
cases he/she also have to treat children that have life threatening conditions and that can be very
stressful. But the most rewarding thing to see when he/she is in this profession is seeing the child
recover from an illness based on the Pediatrician treatment plan. The motivation to become a
Pediatrician is the opportunity to help prevent the illness. The best part is getting the chance is to build
bonds with the children and their parents through weekly routines , and wellness check ups during the
first couple of months. The one benefit of becoming a Pediatrician is being able to support the parents
and children when they both evolve. When counseling children on proper nutrition , I recommend
parents take their kids to the grocery store to allow them to choose foods that they want , under
parental supervisons , says Dr. Miya. This makes the children curious about the different kinds of
food. Being a Pediatricians can be fun at times too, playing and talking to the children this helps the
Pediatrician to get to know the kid better and find out what they like or dislike. Working as a
Pediatrician gives you many ways to help the children stay healthy and become awesome adults.

Coastal Artillery Research Paper
Coastal Artillery is an anti ship artillery used to defend the coast with heavy sized weapons. In this
essay, you will learn a few facts on the history of Coastal artillery, and weaponry.
From the middle ages to WWII, Coastal artillery was highly important to the U.S. in the defense of the
coast and in naval battles. One of the first uses of coastal artillery was in 1381, but it expanded in the
16th century, during the Age of Discoveries. In 1794, Coastal artillery was established as a branch in
the army, creating the first system in 1794 and the second system in 1804. Coastal artillery was
organized into 7 regiments, two of which were created in 1898. However, in 1901 Coastal Artillery

sea. They used heavy fortifications but also used things like, submarine minefields, nets and booms,
ships, and maybe even planes themselves. All of the armed forces contributed to the defense of the
coast. In WWI, Subs and planes became more useful and important.
Coastal artillery was responsible for the installation and operation of controlled mine fields. Weapons
for discharging missiles, placed along the shore for defense against naval attack. After WWI, all but
10 regiments were disbanded. In 1922, coastal artillery acquired new 16 inch and 14 inch weapons,
however they received them in short supply. Fifteen Philippine Scouts Coastal Artillery were created
in 1922.
It was considered that one shore based gun was equal to three naval guns of the same caliber. Land
based guns also benefited in most cases from additional protection to walls. The larges guns used by
coastal artillery were generally of 16 inch diameter. The 14 inch gun M1907 and its variants were

in the United States, and explores reasons for the recent popularity of such degrees. The difficulties in
establishing public private partnerships designed to deliver ADs are also discussed. Finally, we
consider cross cultural equivalents of the online Associate s Degree. An Associate s Degree (AD)
program is generally understood to be an undergraduate academic program that leads to completion of
a course of study in about two years. The degree is awarded by community colleges, junior colleges,
technical schools and four year institutions. There is high demand for AD programs as they provide

Historically, these bodies have accredited career, vocational and trade schools. There are advantages
and disadvantages to attending schools that are nationally accredited. The schools may be less
expensive and require less liberal arts coursework. However, credits from these schools may not be
widely accepted by regionally accredited colleges. Further, coursework and degrees may not be
widely accepted for professions that require licensing after graduation; this might affect students

Stereotypes are a widely held conceptions or beliefs about certain groups of people or things. The

Dave Eggers Zeitoun is a story about a Muslim family in New Orleans before, during, and after
Hurricane Katrina. It follows mainly Abdulrahman, whom people call Zeitoun, and Kathy Zeitoun, his
wife. Eggers follows this family though the dangerous storm and shows the aftermath of what
happened physically and mentally. The story is built through personal accounts and the bias that is
built through these stories. Eggers controls the narrative and what readers should feel and sets the
reader up for a story controlled by him, the author. The beginning of the book introduces the
protagonists. A personal attachment is instantly felt by the readers. Zeitoun s background is introduced
through a flashback of his childhood, but soon after, Eggers talks about their contracting business and

the readers can feel a connection with him. The audience is able to put themselves in his shoes and

They can last from a couple days or as long as ten months and may be followed by flank eruptions.
The lava flows from Mauna Loa are frequent and high volume. The long lengths of these flows and
the fluidity results in the high velocities of the lava flow on steep slopes. This makes Mauna Loa much
more potentially dangerous than other volcanoes. Below is a picture of the 1984 eruption in the
northeast rift zone. Construction of new homes near any active volcano is dangerous and is a major
risk to those living there. The lava from the volcano can flow rapidly down the slope and destroy
anything in its path; this includes any housing or buildings. With that said, $2.3 billion dollars since
1984 have been invested in building new homes on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There are about 75,000

the potential risk that living near a volcano can produce pose. During an eruption in 1984 lava flowed

Stackelberg Game for Joint Power and Bandwidth Allocations...
Amplify and forward cooperative communication scheme is modeled using Stackelberg market
framework, where a relay is willing to sell its resources; power and bandwidth to multi user in the
system in order to maximize its revenue. The relay determines the prices for relaying users
information depending on its available resources and the users demands. Subsequently, each user
maximizes its own utility function by determining the optimum power and the optimum bandwidth to
buy from the relay. The utility function of the user is formulated as a joint concave function of the
power and the bandwidth. The existence and the uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium is investigated
using the exact potential game associated with the proposed utility ... Show more content on

The relay re encodes the decoded message and then forwards it to the destination node [5] [7]. The
authors in [3], developed performance characterizations in terms of the outage events and the
associated outage probabilities.
The average symbol error probability (SEP) of cooperative system is used to analyze the performance
for various systems and channel models [7]. Single and multiple relay selection were investigated, and
several SNR sub optimum multiple relay selection schemes with linear complexity in the number of
the relays were proposed in [8].
Game theory is a powerful tool to study interaction among self interested users, it is most used in
economics, operations research, political science, etc. [9]. In communication systems and networks
game theory has been recently used extensively to model routing, flow control and power control in

The Indian Act and residential school
The Indian Act of 1876 and many of its amending statutes contained sections that were discriminatory
towards Canadian Native Indians, and that legalized suppression of Indian customs and traditions. In
this paper, I will examine how one section of the Act, the one relating to residential schools,
contributed to the genocide of Indian culture. Ever since the first Europeans set foot on Canadian soil
in the 15th century, they have thought their culture and way of life was superior to that of the Native
North Americans. Initially the Europeans relied upon the Indians to show them how to travel and
survive in the wilds of Canada. They also were dependent on Indians as trading partners and as
military allies. However, as more settlers arrived ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the same time, those teachers tried to instill the white man s ways into them. The whole concept of
teaching in the residential schools was countering the traditional native lifestyle. Native children had
always learned through interacting with, emulating, and observing their parents and elders. There was
no structured educational system as there was in the schools. Parents thought that you ...don t [want
to] explain too much or you ll take away the opportunity to learn. (Goulet, 1998) Discipline was
another philosophy foreign to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. Native parents would let their
children discover how to go about doing things by making mistakes on their own. If a child tried
something and it did not work out, the child would suffer the natural consequences of their error and
try to find a better way next time. The entire concept of striking a child was completely unheard of and
was thought to be extremely inappropriate and unnecessary. At both Mopass and the Ontario school,
these were common practices, as was starving children and taking away their privileges. King (1967),
for example describes a situation: They starved us up there! We got one egg a year at Easter. The rest
of the time we got dogfood mush [corn meal] and skim milk. Them in the staff dining room, though,
they got bacon and eggs everyday. We never saw fruit from one Christmas to the next, but they sure
had it. Why some of those kids just starved to death. One year there was

The Freedom to the Choice of Abortion
We all live our lives as we please all in accordance to the law, but when it comes to abortion people
start to judge and try to regulate how others live and interfere in their personal choices. We live in a
country based on freedoms, and women have and should continue to have the freedom to the choice of
an abortion. A woman s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right recognized by the US Supreme

Gender deserves protection from possible discrimination at the hands of the majority. Women
constitute a majority of American s and have been discriminated in the past. The Landmark case Roe
v. Wade was decided and remains the law of the land. Making laws against abortions don t stop
abortions from happening; they just make it less safe, which in many cases leads to death. Therefore
idea of supporting pro life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro choice. No child
should be brought into this world where they are not wanted or are not able to live a normal life. Most
people who are against abortion will never even become pregnant, so they should not be making laws

The Pros And Cons Of Democracy In Belize
Either way to go
Belize is a beautiful country washed by the Caribbean Sea at its east borders. My country gained full
independence on the 21th of September 1981 and now we associate ourselves with the commonwealth
communities, United Nations, CARICOM and several other organizations. We were once ruled by the
British we adopt many of their practices and traditions. Our government system is one we copied and
still is practiced today. Belize has a democratic system therefore it is recognized as a democratic state.
This means that the people get to choose who they want to lead their country. This is done through a
process called election. Elections are done in intervals of three years and in intervals of five years,
municipal elections and general elections. The persons who decide to be a part of politics are
politicians representing either of the parties involved. Here in Belize we have two main parties. ...

It may not be the best choice but it keeps the people of the country involved and not so much like a
robot system. Notwithstanding all the negative effects of this democratic system, Belize is a growing
nation. Both parties have contributed to this land we call home. Either you are in favor of what the
party is doing or you are not. Maybe you are for what some of the politicians are doing as you also
have to keep in mind that it s not only a party pride, each person that is representing their constituency
may be good at what they do but they might with the party whom you do not favor. They all want to
be in a seat and apart of the house of representative. It is our duty to vote for who we believe is best
for Belize. As a young Belizean I believe you should exercise your rights for the reason that you are
going to be affected be it positively or negatively. One will be able to say I contributed to that and

Doctor Manette In A Tale Of Two Cities
The personality of Doctor Manette has greatly altered throughout the book due to realizing he is
capable of great feats. Doctor Manette was first terrified of the world and needed people to guide him
through daily tasks. After being released from prison after almost two decades in pure isolation, all
people and items of the world were unknown and strange. To cope with his anxiety, the Doctor turned
to shoemaking, working for countless hours in the Defarge s tavern. Meeting his daughter Lucie
helped greatly decrease this peculiar behavior, but the Doctor still did not have a sense of self. When
asked if he would like to have a life similar to what he had before he was imprisoned, the Doctor
responded, I hope you care to be recalled to life? And the old answer: I can t say (Dickens 57). It is
clear that the Doctor still believes and sees flashbacks from his horrors in prison, and therefore does
not know otherwise from it. He has been secluded from the outside world for so long that he cannot

Progressive Education in the 1970s Essay
Did Progressive Education Permeate in an Immigrant High School in 1970s?
At the end of the nineteenth century, progressive movements emerged and affected many aspects of
the United States such as education, culture and politics. Since the rapidly increase of enrollment in
high school in this period, educators and reformers desired a apt method to teach these students and
debated what should be involved in curriculum. The ideals of progressive education led by John
Dewey, who is an American philosopher and progressivism reformer. He insisted the curriculum
should be more flexible and base on students interest. Dewey encouraged children to go outside of

The major difference between progressive school and interviewee s high school is teaching methods.
Even though the progressive education was criticized in the mid 1950s because of cold war and
conservatism, I expect that it was still significantly influential in school in 1970s. The majority of the
teachers should not only teach following the textbook in a general way, but also use specific methods
for students of their peculiar characters. They are the guidance to help students acquire skill based on
students interest, not the controller to introduce knowledge to pupils in an ossifying method (Ravitch,
2000). However, there are only a few teachers teaching progressively. For instance, the favorite
teacher of my advisor was willing to leave for the better students many initiatives and help students
improve initiative and originality. The teacher required students using small timber to establish the
physical models and inspired them to do group work. The majority of the teachers were narrow
minded. They taught for testing in an ossifying way and never encouraged students to go outside for
intellectual development. Group workings were not allowed in the most courses. Teachers preferred
receiving homework or reports from pupils individually rather than the representative of a study
group. The majority teachers thought most pupils are not naturally desire to learn the knowledge.

Cardiac Arrest
Getting Children Certified in CPR Cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in adults each

fail to survive because parents, children, co workers, fellow students, and other people you associate

Learning CPR is easy to comprehend, and does not take a lot of time to learn the and master the steps

After somebody goes into cardiac arrest, you must call EMS services. This is a very serious thing and
the life of the patient is at risk. But if you have to wait for emergency medical technicians to arrive to
start cardiopulmonary resuscitation, chances are you have waited too long to save your patient.
Cardiac arrest is a very time sensitive thing and if not treated for immediately, it could very well mean
death for your patient. This is why quick and effective bystander CPR is so important. The faster
someone can get the patient started on CPR compressions and get an AED on the patient, it will also
give the automatic external defibrillator (AED) more time to send the electric shock to your heart and
have it be more effective than if somebody would have started the process of CPR later. Although the
death of some people who go into cardiac arrest is inevitable, many more lives could saved by if more
bystanders knew how to perform CPR. In the article Inotropic Therapies in Asphyxiated Neonates:
The Clinical and Laboratory Facts, Chloe Joynt says, If bystander CPR is not provided, a sudden
cardiac arrest victim s chance of survival fall seven percent to ten percent for every minute of delay
until defibrillation. Few attempts at resuscitation are successful if CPR and defibrillation are not
provided within minutes of collapse. . If more people knew the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest,
more lives could be preserved. Also, it is very important that CPR is given effectively. If bystander
CPR is given immediately and effectively, it can double the victim s chance of survival. Most people
get the idea of how CPR works and the basic motions of it, but you also must know the correct timing
and techniques that come with performing this skill. CPR is not as helpful if you don t take a class to
understand what you are supposed to be doing to the patient, and how what you are doing

The Role Of Water Security In The Jordan River Basin
Abstract
The scarcity, depletion and polluting of water in one of the world s driest regions, is a problem that has
perplexed the nations of the Middle East for decades. The riparian states of the Jordan River Basin
include Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. These states are in a constant struggle over securing water
rights for their respective states. The conflict over water is also overshadowed by the Arab Israeli
issues and the subsequent territorial questions. While territory is often at the forefront of the issues,
securing water has also become a contributing factor in the conflicts of the past, and will continue in
the future. Choices of conflict or cooperation will have to be made, given the diminishing amounts of
water available. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many countries are also highly dependent on water that originates outside their borders; the water
diversion provided by dams for countries that are downstream exacerbates an already serious problem.
The diversion of river systems is an area of international concern, the nature and extent of such
interdependency is already extensive: 145 countries share over 261 international river basin. As
demand increases, and as indigenous sources of water become fully utilized or exhausted, the only
alternatives are likely to be international (Dolatyar, 2006). Ironically, the very solution of one country
s scarcity, plunges another into water shortage, this is the reason why water security is one of the most
crucial foreign policy considerations of a globally connected economic and political atmosphere.
Water as a source of conflict
When one thinks of turmoil in the Middle East, oil is often the first thought, however, water has begun
to be a problematic area, both internal and international. However, the cause for water scarcity does
not only depend on conditions within its borders (Giordano, Giordano Wolf , 2004). Israel s water
source comes from the Jordan River, an elongated valley in the central Middle East, and is shared with
Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine (Lowi, 1995). The Hasbani River, the Dan River, and the Banyas
River are the three tributaries of the Jordan River. Although the Jordan Basin extends into five states,

Eye surgeons who worked at Aravind had productivity rates that were many times their counterparts in
the developed nations. Each surgeon would have an average of 2000 eye surgeries a year as compared
to 150 such eye surgeries done by an eye surgeon in the United States. Much of it could be attributed
to the assembly line system for surgery. Patients were processed and readied in batches, with qualified

Each operating theatre, at any time, had 2 surgeons working on two tables each, with each having four

such that once the surgeon was done with the procedure on one, he and the equipment would swivel to

The Theme Of Democracy In Walt Whitman s Song Of Myself
Heming Chen
American Literature
Ms. Crowl
1 December, 2017
I Could Be You
The word democracy has its roots in the ancient Greek combination of dēmos, meaning the people,
and kratía, meaning power or rule: literally translating as the rule or power of the people . To simplify
the term further, Democracy is an arrangement in which individuals have similar equality in power.
First conceptualized and adopted by the Athenians in fifth century B.C, democracy has made itself to
be known as a powerful and popular government model today, in use by over 60% of modern day
countries. Walt Whitman utilizes the theme of democracy in his poem, Song of Myself, not only
encouraging it as a system, but also as a way of life, seeking unity in all.
Although Whitman uses the seemingly singular pronoun I in his poems, he is not using the pronoun to
signify only himself but also the rest of humanity as a unified entity. Whitman opens his poem with
the words I celebrate myself, and sing myself, / And what I assume you shall assume, / For every atom
belonging to me as good belongs to you (1 3). The first line, its meaning initially seeming rather
cryptic, becomes more discernable once the universal I is employed. It then becomes evident that
Whitman is intending his poem to be a celebration of humankind. Interestingly enough, the usage of
sing in such context almost brings the reader back again to the classics, reminiscent of the epics of old.
While all definitions of assume apply for the

The Burgess Shale By Charles D. Walcott
Ashley Goosic
The Burgess Shale
The Burgess Shale, located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, was discovered by Charles D.
Walcott in 1909. Walcott spent 18 years collecting and classifying the fossils located at this site. The
Shale was formed about 530 million years ago, in the Cambrian Period. Most Cambrian rocks contain
fossils of trilobite shells, cap shaped or flattened shells, and brachiopods (Whittington, 1985). When
Walcott went looking for North American Cambrian fossils in August of 1909, he ended up in the
Canadian Rocky Mountains. He and his wife found a loose block in the ridge they were searching
near, split it open, and found what they later classified the lace crab (Briggs, 1994). Walcott knew
right away what they had discovered was something different the soft parts of the crab, such as the
limbs, were preserved. During the next season, Walcott and his sons came back to the Shale, searching
the slopes along the trail where they had discovered the loose block to find fossil layers. Luckily for
them, the Shale rock layers were almost horizontal, and for thirty days a team quarried the ridge. The
next year, they spent even longer quarrying. The last year spent quarrying the rocks was in 1917, when
Walcott was 67 (Briggs, 1994). The rocks were removed from the ridge using picks, chisels, long iron
bars, and small explosives. All the quarrying done by Walcott and his crew resulted in over sixty five

Canyon Descriptive Writing
It was 1 hour before dawn. The thick gloomy grey blanket rolled through the towering canyon. The
canyon walls loomed overhead as the razor blade ridges were sticking out. At the far end of the dark
misty canyon is where the wall rose. The high reaching wall outstretched the length of the canyon
leaving an impenetrable metal wall. A slight breeze whirled through the bottom of the treacherous
canyon lifting the smell of the rotting dead. The screeching screams and shrieks of the savage demons
were heard from the far.
On top of the wall, the nervous army scattered around trying to get in position. Grabbing their
weapons and clutching them till their hands went white with fear. They could hear the screeching
screams of the demons hiding behind

Naked Lunch Play Summary
How does the play Naked Lunch by Michael Hollinger reflect or challenge my values? After reading
the play, I would have to say that this play challenges my values in more than one way. Lucy states to
Vernon that since they broke up, she has become a vegetarian. I don t eat meat anymore (Meyers,
2017, pp.989). however, after Vernon ensues that she eats the meat she gives into him and takes the
bite. Finally, Lucy opens her mouth and takes the bite of it (Meyer, 2017, pp.991). This weakness
challenges my values if I believe in something or against something I would not break my values to
appease someone. Also, Lucy is weak and afraid of Vernon, but she came to him for dinner after they
were broke up. Vernon also knows that Lucy is weak

Essay Diagnosing the Needs for Change in the Aftermath
The loss of the space shuttle Columbia prompted an investigation to determine the factors that
contributed to the accident. Essential to the investigation was collecting and analyzing data associated
not only with the Columbia accident, but that of the 1987 loss of the space shuttle Challenger.
Evidence from the investigation indicated that lessons learned from the Challenger were not
necessarily applied to the shuttle program and may have been instrumental in the loss of the
Columbia. It was determined that several factors outside of the technical and systemic systems were
associated within the NASA organization and contributed to the loss of the shuttles. Addressed here
are some of the factors that contributed to the tragedies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This reengineering required a significant overhaul in the manner in which the organization was
structured and likewise, the way that it s units communicated. As outlined in CAIB data, NASA had
understood the requirements of the change in priority but it never changed its view in the manner in
which it would accomplish the new requirement. The deeply rooted can do culture persisted.
1980 s and Beyond By the time the nation moved into the 1980 s, the space shuttle was developed and
ready to be launched by early 1981. However, the cost of the shuttle program was significantly higher
than the agency anticipated. This fact, along with culture that NASA retained lent itself to breakdowns
in communication and safety procedures which were its hallmark during the Apollo era. Plainly stated,
the organization realigned itself in a manner that put the Safety, Reliability and Quality Assurance
offices under the supervision of the very organizations and activities whose efforts they are to check
(Rogers Commission, Chapter 7, 1986). The presence of multiple contractors working independently
made it nearly impossible to align information that could be analyzed. These failures in
communication and structure were culminated in the tragedy of the Challenger in 1986. According to
the Commission (1986), further contributing to the tragedy was as flight rate increased, the (Marshall)

Trends And Issues Of Non Profit Management Essay

ADMN 631 Trends and Issues in Non Profit Management
Prof. Travis Hardmon
Trinity Washington University

Abstract
The challenge of nonprofit leadership can prove to be daunting for even the most optimistic of
individuals. The nonprofit industry is and expanding revolution, a force said to influence national and
global economies. Domestically, the nonprofit sector accounts for more than half of America s general
hospitals, nearly half of its education institutions and most of its family service agencies (Rowe,
2013), opportunities created by economic and political failures. In the wake of rapid development,
environmental pressures, economic impact, and growing challenges, nonprofits are being placed under
a microscope, being pushed to take more strategic approaches to NPO management and to apply
sound business principals. For a novice in nonprofit leadership, such as I, the endeavor of creating a
sustainable organization in such a competitive environment can be intimidating.
In the text, Introduction to Nonprofit Management, Rowe and Conway present the key theories of
NPO management through case studies. The examination of these cases highlight managerial issues
and trends that lead to the success and failures of many NPOs. This paper will analyze the areas of
management most foundationally critical to the survival and growth of a start up nonprofit
organization. Board selection, board governance, and leadership, are the steering wheel

A Brief Note On The Migration Of Patient Health Records
Samara Zamora
Final Project
Steps Involved in Migration of Patient Health Records
A hospital in Orlando, FL has decided to switch from a paper based system to an electronic health
record system. An electronic health record is a computerized, accessible record that contains
multimedia data (scanned images, digital, video, voice, and so on) about the patient; it is basically the
patient s paper chart. EHR s are real time records which allow instant availability to those who have
authorized access to the EHR (Bowie, 2011). There are many reasons for a hospital to want to change
from paper records to an EHR; the usual primary reason is to improve medical documentation. First
and foremost it is important to establish what the hospital s primary reason is to establish an EHR.
Knowing this will make the transition smoother and faster because of comprehensive EHR software
and hardware installation that is comprised of a number of different components (Medflow).
The steps involved in the migration of patient health records from a paper based system to an
electronic health record in a hospital setting are as follows:
1. It is important to have an estimated project budget for the transition, having this will prevent delays
or cost overruns later.
2. The hospital might need to hire an outside company or decentralize document imaging at different
locations in the practice. If an outside company is hired records are sent offsite to be scanned and
converted, the hospital needs to

Lydia Maria Child
Ranked among some of the most influential nineteenth century authors, including Charles Dickens,
Edgar Allen Poe, Ida B, and Charles Darwin, Lydia Child was one of the first American women to
make a living off of her writing. People may know her through her books, but in modern times, the
song Over the River and Through the Woods is a well known piece of literature by Child. Lydia Child
wrote the poem the song was based on about her trips to her grandmother s house as a child. This
amazing writer, Lydia Maria Child, was born into an American abolitionist family on February 11,
1802. Abolition is the action of getting rid of an old system or norm. An abolitionist is someone who
works toward getting rid of the old system. In Maria Child s case, ... Show more content on

In 1833, Child released a new book, An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans.
This book was based around the history and life of slaves. She also calls for the immediate
emancipation of all slaves without compensation to slaveholders. (History of American Women) It
exploited the fact both the south and north are responsible for the effects and existence of slavery. This
book was not the hit it was meant to be. As one of the first anti slavery publication printed in book
form, but Child did make more despite what happened at first. As her sales plummeted, her friends did
as well. By daring to condemn slavery at a time when abolition was still highly unpopular even in the
North, Child became the object of national hatred. (History of American Women) The website also
states that most of her friends in Boston were outraged by the way Child had blamed the north as well
as the south for the prejudice towards blacks and the segregation that existed. Lydia Maria Child
continued with her anti slavery books and standing up for what was right, even though she lost her
reputation and friends. Maria Child displayed perseverance when she continued to write the loathed
books. Even though it seemed she lost everything in just one night, she still managed to say, I want to
shoot the accursed institution from all quarters of the globe. I think, from this time till I die, I shall

Bandura and Skinner
A Comparison and Contrast of Learning Theories: Albert Bandura and B.F. Skinner Introduction Two
prominent researchers, B.F. Skinner and Albert Bandura, have developed theories which provide
differing perspectives and explanations regarding the learning behavior of individuals. The purpose of
this writing is to explore the theoretical perspectives of Operant Conditioning Theory developed by
B.F. Skinner and Social Learning Theory developed by Albert Bandura. An overview of both theories
is presented, followed by a discussion of their similarities and differences. Methods B.F. Skinner:

He also recognizes that character traits within a person can influence behavior, but does not believe
traits alone can explain behavior and learning. Instead, Bandura expanded upon these theories and
developed the concept of reciprocal determinism, which posits that the person, their environment, and
behavior all influence one another. Bandura argued that personal factors affect behavior, which alters
the environment, and that environment is not only a cause of behavior, but also an effect of behavior,
and these all operate as interlocking determinants of each other (Bandura, 1978, p. 346). Therefore, if
we are going to attempt to understand human behavior, all of these factors and their mutual influences
must be recognized. (Cloninger, 2007, p.353). Self Regulation. Bandura s theory is essentially an
agentic perspective, which views people as self organizing, proactive, and self regulating, as opposed
to being reactive organisms shaped solely by environmental forces. His theory posits that human
beings have a considerable amount of control over their own behavior, though they may exhibit
variations on how effectively they exert it. Bandura believed that individuals can be, essentially, self
directed, at least to the extent that they are able to make goals and then track and evaluate their own
progress.

Essay On Mas Selamat
The escape of Mas Selamat was one of the major political scandals that occurred in Singapore, which
involved the one and only prison break of a highly dangerous terrorist.
Mas Selamat bin Kastari began his involvement in terrorism in the early 90s when he joined a
precursor movement to the Jemaah Islamiah (also known as the JI) group. An Indonesian born
Singaporean, he headed to Afghanistan for training, where he devoted his time and attention to gaining
knowledge of the Taliban system of governance in his early thirties. He was also suspected to have
devised the plot to bomb Singapore Changi Airport in January 2002, followed by the planning of
hijacking a plane scheduled from Bangkok and crashing it into Singapore Changi Airport. He was ...

consisting personnel from Royal Malaysian Police, Special Branch and Special Actions unit broke
through the doors and rushed into the house when Mas Selamat refused to surrender when ordered by
the team. The news was then announced to the public through the Singapore media on 8 May 2009,
which later was confirmed by both the Singapore and Malaysian governments. Mas Selamat was
being held under the Internal Security Act by the Malaysian government, based on the ground that
Mas Selamat was scheming a plan leading to the arrest.
Mas Selamat was deported back to Singapore for detention under the Internal Security Act on 24
September 2010.

Donald Trump s Impeachment Essay

The world can finally breathe a sigh of relief. People of all races, genders, and sexualities gathered in
the streets to celebrate this momentous event. The wall between the United States and Mexico has
been destroyed, refugees and the LGBTQ community are no longer being oppressed and the electoral
college has been abolished. Although these two years have been difficult. Filled with the feeling of
impending doom that would eventually result to armageddon. We the people have resisted. Looking
back and reflecting on these last years the world has finally come to the conclusion that electing
Trump was a terrible idea...IT S ABOUT TIME AMERICA!! It seems that Trump s legacy can be

Feminism During The Vietnam War
Research Question: How did the Vietnam War affect women and what was their role in the war effort

women experienced while their husbands were off at war. This allows us to see how the war affected
the women and what changes had to be made to their lives to adapt to the loss of their husband.

This is a book that discusses different protests that are occurring in the war. The book gives insight
into some of the protests developed by women to support the Vietnamese women who had to deal with
all the carnage. This shows us what the women went through to demonstrate how they felt about the
war. G.H Gallup, The Gallup Poll: Public Opinion 1935 1971 (New York: Random House, 1972). The
polls provide a distinction between how women and other groups felt about the war. The polls allow
us to analyze, over the years, how opinions about the war changed. I will use the polls specifically for
what the women felt about the war. In my paper I will be able to analyze how the war changed the
thoughts of many women. The paper will look in depth on how women were able to help in the war
effort or how they expressed their patronage in a different way: protests. I will be able to draw
information from many different sources including letters, magazines, polls, and books about women
during this time frame. The sources I have provided above are a few of the primary sources that I will

The Factors Of Social Psychology
This movie is chosen for a number of reasons. One because of it s reputation at being the greatest of
all time classics. Secondly, it shows examples of behavioral, physiological, and mental aspects of
psychology that anyone can judge it and come to their own conclusion. It s an awesome movie to find
theories to analyze, not to mention having the greatest ongoing values along with the film. Most of the
big theories that I will use deal with of social interaction, which involves with the factors of social
psychology.
Starting off I would like to point one of the characters from the movie. The character is by Keanu
Reeves, who plays the role as Mr. Thomas Anderson, a computer programmer, but he s also living a
life as a computer hacker under the alias Neo . The social principle that applies to Neo s character of
being a very informational influence. To give a brief summary, Neo is awoken from a simulation of
what life is, to the cruel reality which is the exact opposite of everything he s known. Neo experiences
all the characteristics of being in an unusual environment and culture, which include but not limited to
denial, acceptance, etc. The reason why influences plays a part is because Neo is motivated by the
belief that individuals who brought him to reality are correct. This is, what s known as informational
influence.
There are ten different events.characters, and ideas in the movie that definitely point out to several
theories of psychology. The first is an

Kenner Vs Sinclair
In America, from the early 1900 s to the present, meatpacking industries have changed in large
increments, however, their intentions of providing copious amounts of meat for a cheap price have
lived on. As muckrakers, Upton Sinclair, author of The Jungle, and Robert Kenner, director of the film
Food, Inc., have targeted the American meat packaging plants. They accomplish this by meeting the
common goal of creating awareness for the people of the U.S. about what the citizens are actually
consuming. Despite the parallel goal they share and multiple similarities as to how they both expose
the meat packaging plants of the U.S., many differences stand due to the contrasting time in which
Sinclair and Kenner live, and due to their differentiating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, my opinions about the meat I eat from the processing plants have not changed in the long
run. As a consumer and thinker, I would like to believe that the food I eat is as fresh as possible
containing little too no preservatives. Despite the fact that after reading and watching the works of
America s muckrakers I know that eating meat without chemicals in it is highly unlikely, yet I still
have not changed what meat I eat and where I consume that meat. The novel entitled, The Jungle, by
Upton Sinclair, and the film Food, Inc., by Robert Kenner, target the corrupt and unfair meat
packaging plants of America to create awareness around the country as to what the conditions in the
factories are like, and to give insight about the quality of the meat. The two muckraker s worked hard
in their respective time to deliver the best information to the people in the way that they consider to be
the most effective. America has seen extensive amounts of change and reform to its meat packing
facilities from 1906, the year that Upton Sinclair published his novel, to the present. In contrary, the
same disturbing intention of the meat factories to provide quantity over quality have found a way to
continue to prevail over the long years of our nation s

  • 2. Militarism Against The Vietnam War Songs often reflect or critique the ideologies of their time period. However, the songs are not bound to the specific time period in which they are created because the ideologies they reflect or critique are also not bound to a specific context. These residual ideologies are created in the past, but still acting as an effective element of the present (Williams). The song Masters of War is a song that falls into this category; in 1963, the song Masters of War was written by Bob Dylan as a response to the antiwar movement against the Vietnam War, and in 2004, Pearl Jam applied the antiwar sentiment of the song to the context of the war on terrorism. In both time periods, the dominant ideology of militarism that prioritized the role of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The terror attacks on September 11, 2001, introduced a new form of enemy and in response, the government invoked the residual ideology of militarism to combat this enemy instead of turning to an emergent ideology, or a new, creative way of facing this new enemy. The Bush administration declared the war on terrorism and in solidarity with those affected by the terror attacks, the public supported the government s actions (Foner). However, the enemy of this war was loosely defined as those who hate freedom and the board definition included all terrorist groups around the world that poses a threat to the Western world and the freedom it represents (Foner). The first act of war under the war on terrorism was when the Taliban, the terrorist group responsible for the tragedy on September 11, refused to give up its leader Osama bin Laden and the United States responded with air strikes (Foner). To the public, this military action against Afghanistan and the Taliban seemed justified because the Taliban was the group responsible for the terror attacks. However, with the enemy so ambiguously defined and without a clear agenda, the government was able to take free rein of the direction of the war and possible self interest came into play. The government identified the axis of evil as Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, and claimed that these three countries harbored weapons of mass destruction, or nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and planned to use these weapons on the United States; this claim was not supported by evidence (Foner). As the United States went to war with Iraq under this unjustified accusation, dissent rose around the world and many suspected that the true intention was to fight for control over the world s second largest oil reserves in Iraq (Foner). These antiwar protests around the world set the context for Pearl Jam s 2004 cover of Masters of War on David ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Consumerism Speech How many times would you say you thought, I need that bag, or those shoes because everyone else has them? How many people do you speak to that know who you are as a person and not just the things you like or the types of food you don t eat. Is it possible that you could, unwillingly and unintentionally be superficial? Good morning everyone and welcome to the mindset of modern society, materialistic and consumer driven. Today, the desirable consumerist lifestyle outweighs the instinct of compassion, which only proves my point that the inherent values of consumerism force you all; yes you, to be insensitive. The Australian poet Bruce Dawe wrote The Not So Good Earth during the Vietnam War, about these values influencing the response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Twice? Three times? Does it end? The colloquialisms in the poem only further denote the inextricable link of consumerism to relationships. When it is linked this closely to people, the very nature of their interaction is shaped into a shallow never ending cycle of meaningless expression. The falseness of communication today is directly linked to the consumerist lifestyle and has been increasing since the late 1880 s. Clancy of the Overflow not only depicts the city as a giant symbol of materialism, but also portrays the townsfolk as having eager eyes and greedy stating that they have no time to grow, they have no time to waste . This statement is indicative of the busyness of people s lives and negligence of other humans. Similarly, when Paterson wrote As they shoulder one another in their rush and nervous haste he shows the carelessness of people affected by consumerism in this era, which has only increased from the time of Paterson to the time of Dawe, and furthermore to present day. What can we do to change? What can we do to stop this perpetual chain of meaningless things, people and interactions? It begins with the consumer mindset; this is what influences our identity, and our communications. When consumerism becomes something we understand and acknowledge we can then bring about change in relationships and eventually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What We Really Miss About The 1950 s Summary When I read What We Really Miss About the 1950 s , Stephanie Coontz provides many data and reports to support the positive side and negative sides of the 1950 s. On my first impression, the 1950 s sounded a pretty good era. People just get through the World War II. Many young men came back home or just build their new home. After so many years, American people can do everything at once again. The story is built through personal accounts and the bias that is built through these stories. Eggers controls the narrative and what readers should feel and sets the reader up for a story controlled by him, the author. The beginning of the book introduces the protagonists. A personal attachment is instantly felt by the readers. All these details about how helpful and selfless Zeitoun is making sure the reader knows these positive things about him. Eggers way of writing is very deliberate in controlling the narrative. He strictly focuses on things Zeitoun is doing, how his family is feeling, and the devastation Zeitoun is seeing. Since the story is so personal, the readers can feel a connection with him. The audience is able to put themselves in his shoes and experience what he is experiencing. The long lengths of these flows and the fluidity results in the high velocities of the lava flow on steep slopes. This makes Mauna Loa much more potentially dangerous than other volcanoes. Below is a picture of the 1984 eruption in the northeast rift zone. Construction of new homes near any active volcano is dangerous and is a major risk to those living there. The lava from the volcano can flow rapidly down the slope and destroy anything in its path; this includes any housing or buildings. With that said, $2.3 billion dollars since 1984 have been invested in building new homes on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There are about 75,000 people living near Mauna Loa, but the tourist industry has prompt the major investments in construction of housing and other tourist attractions. The major city of Hilo has been an example of the potential risk that living near a volcano can produce pose. During an eruption in 1984 lava flowed within 4 miles of the city. Precautions have been made to reduce these risks. Ultra sensitive strainmeters and seismometers have been placed in three sites on Mauna Loa. The Indian Act and residential school The Indian Act of 1876 and many of its amending statutes contained sections that were discriminatory towards Canadian Native Indians, and that legalized suppression of Indian customs and traditions. In this paper, I will examine how one section of the Act, the one relating to residential schools, contributed to the genocide of Indian culture. Ever since the first Europeans set foot on Canadian soil in the 15th century, they have thought their culture and way of life was superior to that of the Native North Americans. Initially the Europeans relied upon the Indians to show them how to travel and survive in the wilds of Canada. They also were dependent on Indians as trading partners and as military allies. The whole concept of teaching in the residential schools was countering the traditional native lifestyle. Parents thought that you ...don t [want to] explain too much or you ll take away the opportunity to learn. (Goulet, 1998) Discipline was another philosophy foreign to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. Native parents would let their children discover how to go about doing things by making mistakes on their own. If a child tried something and it did not work out, the child would suffer the natural consequences of their error and try to find a better way next time. The entire concept of striking a child was completely unheard of and was thought to be extremely inappropriate and unnecessary. At both Mopass and the Ontario school, these were common practices, as was starving children and taking away their privileges. We live in a country based on freedoms, and women have and should continue to have the freedom to the choice of an abortion. A woman s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right recognized by the US Supreme Court. The courts also have a category of classes called the near suspect classes, which include gender. Gender deserves protection from possible discrimination at the hands of the majority. Women constitute a majority of American s and have been discriminated in the past. The Landmark case Roe v. Therefore idea of supporting pro life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro choice. No child should be brought into this world where they are not wanted or are not able to live a normal life. Most people who are against abortion will never even become pregnant, so they should not be making laws against it. Pregnancy is a private and personal matter. Cardiac arrest is a very time sensitive thing and if not treated for immediately, it could very well mean death for your patient. This is why quick and effective bystander CPR is so important. The faster someone can get the patient started on CPR compressions and get an AED on the patient, it will also give the automatic external defibrillator (AED) more time to send the electric shock to your heart and have it be more effective than if somebody would have started the process of CPR later. Although the death of some people who go into cardiac arrest is inevitable, many more lives could saved by if more bystanders knew how to perform CPR. As such, it was the cataract procedure that became the poster child for efficiency. Smarter Use of People Eye surgeons who worked at Aravind had productivity rates that were many times their counterparts in the developed nations. Each surgeon would have an average of 2000 eye surgeries a year as compared to 150 such eye surgeries done by an eye surgeon in the United States. Much of it could be attributed to the assembly line system for surgery. Patients were processed and readied in batches, with qualified nurses doing all the preparatory work, so that the surgeons could focus on what they did best, surgery. Each operating theatre, at any time, had 2 surgeons working on two tables each, with each having four qualified nurses assisting them at any time.. These tables were placed on either side of the equipment, such that once the surgeon was done with the procedure on one, he and the equipment would swivel to the other table. Leaving the qualified opthalmic assistants to escort the treatment patient to the recovery room and prepare the next patient on the free table. This assembly line structure ensured that the waiting times between surgeries were basically zero. • 32. The Theme Of Democracy In Walt Whitman s Song Of Myself Heming Chen American Literature Ms. Crowl 1 December, 2017 I Could Be You The word democracy has its roots in the ancient Greek combination of dēmos, meaning the people, and kratía, meaning power or rule: literally translating as the rule or power of the people . To simplify the term further, Democracy is an arrangement in which individuals have similar equality in power. First conceptualized and adopted by the Athenians in fifth century B.C, democracy has made itself to be known as a powerful and popular government model today, in use by over 60% of modern day countries. Walt Whitman utilizes the theme of democracy in his poem, Song of Myself, not only encouraging it as a system, but also as a way of life, seeking unity in all. Although Whitman uses the seemingly singular pronoun I in his poems, he is not using the pronoun to signify only himself but also the rest of humanity as a unified entity. Whitman opens his poem with the words I celebrate myself, and sing myself, / And what I assume you shall assume, / For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you (1 3). The first line, its meaning initially seeming rather cryptic, becomes more discernable once the universal I is employed. It then becomes evident that Whitman is intending his poem to be a celebration of humankind. Interestingly enough, the usage of sing in such context almost brings the reader back again to the classics, reminiscent of the epics of old. While all definitions of assume apply for the ... • 33. The Burgess Shale By Charles D. Walcott Ashley Goosic The Burgess Shale The Burgess Shale, located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, was discovered by Charles D. Walcott in 1909. Walcott spent 18 years collecting and classifying the fossils located at this site. The Shale was formed about 530 million years ago, in the Cambrian Period. Most Cambrian rocks contain fossils of trilobite shells, cap shaped or flattened shells, and brachiopods (Whittington, 1985). When Walcott went looking for North American Cambrian fossils in August of 1909, he ended up in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. He and his wife found a loose block in the ridge they were searching near, split it open, and found what they later classified the lace crab (Briggs, 1994). Walcott knew right away what they had discovered was something different the soft parts of the crab, such as the limbs, were preserved. During the next season, Walcott and his sons came back to the Shale, searching the slopes along the trail where they had discovered the loose block to find fossil layers. Luckily for them, the Shale rock layers were almost horizontal, and for thirty days a team quarried the ridge. The next year, they spent even longer quarrying. The last year spent quarrying the rocks was in 1917, when Walcott was 67 (Briggs, 1994). The rocks were removed from the ridge using picks, chisels, long iron bars, and small explosives. All the quarrying done by Walcott and his crew resulted in over sixty five thousand fossils, now stored in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. A Brief Note On The Migration Of Patient Health Records Samara Zamora Final Project Steps Involved in Migration of Patient Health Records A hospital in Orlando, FL has decided to switch from a paper based system to an electronic health record system. An electronic health record is a computerized, accessible record that contains multimedia data (scanned images, digital, video, voice, and so on) about the patient; it is basically the patient s paper chart. EHR s are real time records which allow instant availability to those who have authorized access to the EHR (Bowie, 2011). There are many reasons for a hospital to want to change from paper records to an EHR; the usual primary reason is to improve medical documentation. First and foremost it is important to establish what the hospital s primary reason is to establish an EHR. Knowing this will make the transition smoother and faster because of comprehensive EHR software and hardware installation that is comprised of a number of different components (Medflow). The steps involved in the migration of patient health records from a paper based system to an electronic health record in a hospital setting are as follows: 1. It is important to have an estimated project budget for the transition, having this will prevent delays or cost overruns later. 2. The hospital might need to hire an outside company or decentralize document imaging at different locations in the practice. If an outside company is hired records are sent offsite to be scanned and converted, the hospital needs to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Instead, Bandura expanded upon these theories and developed the concept of reciprocal determinism, which posits that the person, their environment, and behavior all influence one another. Bandura argued that personal factors affect behavior, which alters the environment, and that environment is not only a cause of behavior, but also an effect of behavior, and these all operate as interlocking determinants of each other (Bandura, 1978, p. 346). Therefore, if we are going to attempt to understand human behavior, all of these factors and their mutual influences must be recognized. (Cloninger, 2007, p.353). Self Regulation. Bandura s theory is essentially an agentic perspective, which views people as self organizing, proactive, and self regulating, as opposed to being reactive organisms shaped solely by environmental forces. His theory posits that human beings have a considerable amount of control over their own behavior, though they may exhibit variations on how effectively they exert it.
