The Ins and Outs of Cancer Essay
The Ins and Outs of Cancer
Cancer has affected the lives of each and every one of us alive today. Many people have know
someone with cancer, yet even those who haven t have been bombarded with constant reminders of its
terrible threat. Although cancer is often referred to as a single condition, it actually consists of more
than 100 different diseases, all characterized by the uncontrolled growth, reproduction, and spread of
abnormal body cells. All of these diseases are individually unique, yet the basic processes that produce
cancers are very similar (Ruddon, 1995). The human body consists of over 30 trillion cells, living in a
complex, interdependent harmony. They regulate each other s proliferation; normal cells reproduce ...

Proto oncogenes induce cell growth and reproduction, while tumor suppressor genes inhibit it.
Together, they carefully control the proliferation of cells. However, if a proto oncogene is mutated, it
can become a carcinogenic oncogene, driving excessive multiplication. Tumor suppressor genes, on
the other hand, contribute to cancer when they are inactivated by mutation (Ruddon, 1995).
Luckily, cancerous tumors are not caused by one little mutation in one cell they are caused by multiple
mutations in a number of the cell s growth controlling genes. The number of mutations necessary can
be as low as two or quite high, depending on the specific type of cancer. Generally, these mutations
occur either from mistakes during cell reproduction, or due to DNA damage caused by carcinogens
such as tobacco, certain poisons, and UV rays. So, why don t we all get cancer from these things right
away? Consider that one of your cells is damaged by poison and becomes mutated. In order for this
cell to turn into a cancer cell, the rest of the necessary mutations must also occur in this very same
cell. This in itself, is fairly unlikely. It normally takes decades for an incipient tumor to collect all the
mutations required for it s malignant growth, which explains why the average age for cancer diagnosis
is 67 (Ruddon, 1995). Why, then, do some individuals

The Twisted Darkness Analysis
The Twisted Darkness
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote and published many novels and short stories throughout his career,
including several published anonymously. More often readers find a his work to be different types of
romance followed and surrounded with twists of darkness. Based on Hawthorne s biography you can
find most of his characters and the darkness in his stories, come from personal experience. The mix of
success and failure during Hawthorne s writing career resembles parts in his story The Devil in
Manuscript leading to an unfathomable twist for his readers. Born in Salem Massachusetts in 1804,
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a prominent family. His ancestors were some of the earliest to
settle in the country; including Nathaniel s late relative John Hathorne who stood as a judge during the
Salem witch trials. The passing of his father to yellow fever, Nathaniel at age four was raised by his
widowed mother in mournful seclusion (Marks 1). Shortly after the death of his father, his mother
moved the family to Maine in 1815 where poetry and romance peaked Hawthorne s interest (Marks 1).
Graduating Bowdoin College at the age of twenty five, Hawthorne returned to Salem where he began
his writing allegorical stories concerning the moral values of New England (Marks 1). Nonetheless at
just twenty eight years of age, Hawthorne anonymously published his first novel Fanshawe covering
his time spent in college. Disgusted after the novel went virtually unnoticed, his

How Did Malthus Build Food Production In The Ottoman Empire
Growth and Food Production in the Ottoman Empire
In his 1798 Essay on the Principle of Population, Thomas Malthus defended the proposition that, had
population and food increased in the same ratio, it is probable that man might never have emerged
from the savage state. Labeled a Malthusian trap after the demographer s work, the theoretical
principle holds that, because population increases exponentially, while agricultural output increases
arithmetically, periodic premature deaths among the population will be caused by a lack of sustenance.
Had a population never overcome the reoccurring demographic trap of an equal increase in food and
population, Malthus contends, the life of man as a subsistence farmer would continue to be, as
succinctly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Ottoman Empire, immigration from Russia and the upper Balkan Peninsula brought a ten fold
increase in iron plow use in Ottoman Bulgaria, and the introduction of the calorie rich potato to
Anatolia, which had a beneficial effect of agriculture of Anatolia as a whole. Whether or not the
limited introduction of improved techniques and plant species into the Empire was also driving force
behind increased production, it still appeared to be caused by the influx of people to the region.
Malthus s doomsday prediction of stagnation upon population growth appears to fail when considering
the possibility of introduction of new techniques to maximize gains. So far, in the case of the Ottoman
Empire, the relationship between changes in population density and agricultural production has proven
to be that an increase in the former resulted in a subsequent and equal rise in the latter. In order to
address whether or not Malthus s claim that

The Importance Of Sexual Identity Development
The sexual orientation identity development is a theoretical model that conceptualized the resolution
of internal conflict related to the formation of individual sexual identity. For sexual minority people, it
is commonly known as the coming out process (Bilodeau Renn 2005). There have been many different
models elaborated to explain such process. All of them share similar stages: awareness, crisis, and
acceptance (Loiacano 1989). When individuals become aware of their queer feelings and attraction,
they try to block these homosexual feelings by constantly denying and minimizing them. This
mechanism of defense leaves negative sequelae in their overall psychosocial well being (Bilodeau
Renn 2005). Individuals tend to pass by a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, this process profoundly differs among Latino and African American it is based on white
middle class gay participants (Lewis and Marshall 2011; Bridges, Selvidge, Matthews 2003). The
unique stressors that Latinos and African Americans face on a daily basis have serious implication in
their mental health (Loiacano 1989). The queerness experience of Latino and African American folks
are very alike. Both ethnic/racial group members not only share culture with similar features, but they
also are exposed to the same systematic oppression experience. Latino and African American queer
people likewise have to deal with racism, xenophobic and homophobic sentiment, on a daily basis.
Such oppression comes from their most meaningful source of support, which is their family and social
community. Both African American and Latino culture share a similar concept of meaning and
purpose of a family as well as religious belief. These are not very queer friendly and make their
community an oppressive environment. It is imperative to examine the interaction between
ethnic/racial and sexual identity and how it affects the psychosocial well being of sexual minorities.
Likewise, to explore how group therapy can be used to their advantages. Latino and African
American: Community, Family, and Religion The sense of belonging to a community is highly
important for Latino and African American. Latino cultural attitudes toward homosexual identity are

Persuasive Essay On Health Care
America is a great nation, that is full of independent people. This is great, it leads to many good
inventions and progressive ideas. But when it comes to the way healthcare works, America is lacking
compared to the rest of the first world countries. The fully privatized health insurance leaves people of
lower income without the access to the great healthcare we as Americans deserve. So, I think that
America s healthcare system should be rebuilt where everyone can go to the doctors without fear of
the outrageous pricing. America is such a great place, as far as medical advancements. The fact that
this is walled off so heavily to most people because of cost is something that needs to change. The
problem isn t going to be easy to fix. Whatever you want to say about Obama s presidency his plan
with the Affordable Health Care Act was the pioneering steps towards moving our, seemingly ancient,
healthcare system into the future. Even as much as Trump hates to admit it he is in favor of this idea
too. He has stated that he doesn t think anyone should go without getting help when they are sick. The
country needs a base level of insurance. The fact people would rather get drove to the hospital than to
call an ambulance because of costs. This shows we really need to think about reforming the way we
treat our people. The problem isn t just with serious injuries that require immediate medical attention.
People in America treat their bodies like old beater cars and ignore serious

The Two Franks and Their Architecture Essay
Different architects have different styles because they are trying to get at different things. Architecture
is not just about making something beautiful anymore, it is about trying to get across a set of ideas
about how we inhabit space. Two of the most famous architects of the twentieth century, one from
each side, the early part and the later part up until today each designed a museum with money donated
by the Guggenheim foundation. One of these is in New York City, it was designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright. The other is in bilbao, Spain, and it was designed by Frank Geary. My purpose of this paper is
to interrogate each of these buildings, glorious for different reasons, to show how each architect was
expressing their own style. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a very functional approach. I am only going to talk about the outside of Frank Geary s museum
because I have never been there, and I have only seen pictures on the internet. This building is
surprisingly attractive because the other building that we saw in class of his, his house in Santa
Monica, had a great deal of ugliness, to use an official term. His house in Santa Monica was supposed
to look unfinished, with an emphasis on the materials used in construction. This building, however,
looks as if it has been wrapped in silver. It looks very futuristic, and angular, so it could be functional
as a museum as a museum because people will know it holds modern art. I like the way that it catches
reflections, almost mirroring the surrounding buildings. So, in these two examples we see very
different approaches to architecture. One has an impressive inside and the other one has an appealing
outside. Also, both seem to be departures for the architects from their normal modes Wright s building
doesn t blend in with nature, and Geary s doesn t look deconstructed into small parts. Now if only they
could has worked together on one project, then we would have a museum that would be perfect inside
and out. The Falling Water House that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright is an embodiment of organic
architecture. It has a stone face that was the same tonal feeling of the rock that surrounds the building.
There is a feeling that is inspired in the

Jane Addams, An Advocate Of Immigrants, The Poor, Women,...
Explain who created the source and why.
Jane Addams was an upper class woman who thought it was her job to help others. Addams was an
advocate of immigrants, the poor, women, and peace. In 1889, she created the hull house. The Hull
house was created to help female immigrants become assimilated to the American life style by helping
get them a job, learn the language, and receive an education. So it was no surprise that in in 1915, Jane
Addams wrote the life changing article Why Women Should Vote .
Discuss whether or not the writer was a neutral party. If not, explain the opinions or interests that
might have influenced what was written
During the 1900 s women were under the idea of the cult of domesticity. This means that the women s
place was in the home. They had jobs such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. In the
article Why Women should Vote , it is clear to see that Addams is biased and believes that women
deserve the right to vote. However, unlike other persuasive article Addams article is different, she
believes women should be able to vote but she doesn t bash the male population. She writes an article
where she says not only why women should get the vote or why women should have the vote, but
rather she talks about why women should vote and why it is the responsibility of women to vote.
Many women around the country felt oppressed. Different groups, started to form as they fought for
women s rights. Groups such as National American Women

The Problem Of Indexicals Inside Putnam s Twin Earth
The Problem of indexicals inside Putnam s twin earth Semantic externalism, the idea that the meaning
of terms is defined by factors external to the speaker. So two speakers can have inside their brains an
identical brain states at the point of making a statement as the extension is separate from the brain
state. Putnam is trying to establish the view that 1. The meaning of a term is determined by the
psychological state of the person using it 2. The extension of a term is determined by its meaning.
These two points together do not entail the following conclusion as either point one or two is false. 3.
The extension of a term is determined by the psychological state of the person who uses it. So Putnam

Therefore, it s not sufficient just to look brain states of an individual to determine the reference of the
term they are using, the causal history of the object must also be taken into account. By causal history
we have to look at the Causal Theory of Reference by Saul Kripke, a theory on how terms can acquire
specific referents. The idea being that in order for a name to be able to refer to anything successfully
you do not have to completely familiar with the thing, only that the causal chain when you use it. So
for example with the naming on an individual, at the point of birth you would only need someone to
point at the baby and state I name you Jeff and from this point all of Jeff s family and friends refer to
him as Jeff following this baptismal event. Not everyone who refers to Jeff was present at this event
and when they refer to Jeff. For example one of Jeff s family friends were not present when he s given
a name but they were told about Jeff by one of his parents, so through Jeff s parent the family friend
has a causal chain to Jeff for being given that name . By drawing on the ideas of a causal continuity
for names the twin earth to show why names are independent from out brain states. The point of the

Victim Offender Mediation Research Paper
Utilitarianism and victim offender mediation (REFERENTIE). The moral philosopher Jeremy
Bentham developed an influential consequentialist philosophy of morality: utilitarianism. Bentham s
starting point in his philosophy is that feelings of pleasure and pain direct us in everything, and
thereby also direct us in determining what is right and wrong. He believes that pleasure/happiness is
intrinsically good, and pain/suffering is intrinsically bad. We strive for the most happiness by trying to
maximize pleasure and minimize pain. According to Bentham, the right thing to do is to search for the
greatest balance of pleasure over pain in choosing our actions. So in his philosophy, moral behavior is
completely dependent on the consequences related to our actions. When applying Bentham s
philosophy of morality to criminal justice and in specific victim offender mediation, the most
important question to ask is: does it maximize utility? Restorative justice practices are often compared
to the traditional criminal justice system, so in our modern day situation Bentham would like to know
which of these justice reactions allows for the greatest overall balance of pleasure/happiness over
pain/suffering. You can look at this problem in two ways: maximizing utility for the group of victims
and offenders, or maximizing utility for society. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

justice than in criminal justice procedures (Braithwaite, 1999; Latimer, Dowden, Muise, 2005).

review of Strang, Sherman Mayo Wilson, Woods and Arial (2013) it turned out that offender
recidivism was much lower when offenders were randomly assigned to victim offender mediation than

Mike was an intelligent man ever since he was a kid. He read lots of books on science and gained as
much knowledge as possible to understand the functions of science. He took every single math course
and science course in high school to study electrical engineering in university, which displays how
intelligent he is based on the success he achieved. Motivation is another characteristic of Mike
because he was motivated everyday by learning and understanding science. From the start of age 5 to
the career he achieved, science has been in his everyday life. The love he possesses towards science
caused him to create outstanding technological services to the world. Mike was also a critical thinker
as he was an individual who thinks clearly and rationally. The subjects Science and math involve
critical thinking and problem solving. He utilized his knowledge and background information to solve
issues and arrive to solutions. An example can be the development of the Blackberry. The big issue
was that phones did not have many features, and he solved this problem by being a critical thinker.
Dedication is also a key characteristic of Mike Lazaridis because being dedicated means someone who
is committed to their task, and without dedication, Mike would have not been able to spend years of
his life studying the functions of science. With dedication, he was committed to learn and utilize his
knowledge in the outer world. Lastly, confidence is also another major characteristic of Lazaridis. He
knew how to make his business succeed, and that was mostly done by being confident. His confidence

first day she couldn t believe what she d got herself into. Despite this rough start to her journey she
soon begins to see her life on the trail as normal. She also lacks a lot of confidence in her hiking
abilities at the beginning. She got embarrassed when she would run into other hikers and they would
mention the size of her bag or other information that is common knowledge to most hikers. However,
later on she begins to become more confident in her abilities and even goes as far as to say she, felt
like a hard ass motherfucking Amazonian queen (202). Her newfound confidence is shown as she
meets people who are not hikers and is eager to explain to them about the PCT and tell them about her
journey, particularly when she meets the reporter for Hobo Times. She earnestly argues that she is not
a hobo and calls herself an expert hiker and explains how far she travels and the hardships of the trail.
Her newfound confidence shines through during this encounter, as she is no longer the insecure hiker
from the start of her trip. Most importantly, Cheryl finds strength and direction throughout her trip.
Before her journey her life is a mess, she has just divorced her husband and acquired a heroin
addiction. Not only does the fact that she s disconnected keep her from her bad habits, such as heroin,

The Children And Their Primary Schools Report
The children and their primary schools report, also known as the Plowden Report, was published in
1967 by the Central Advisory Council and written by Bridget Plowden. The aim of the report was to
consider Primary Education in all of its aspects and the transition from primary to secondary
education. The Report took four years to write and was published just after the post Second World
War. At this time many people believed that environmental influences played a significant role in the
development of students. (Bartlett et al., 2001).
The Plowden documented different recommendations into how children should be taught and strongly
emphasised the importance of the first 6years of a child s education. The report also looked closely at
any social inequalities that might affect the child s learning such as family size and/or overcrowding.
The Plowden also had a major influence on today s education, it introduced a new style of teaching
and learning, that hadn t been used before. Before the report was published, education was taught in a
very traditional and didactic way of the teacher standing at the front of the class and sharing their
knowledge to the children who expected to just listen and take in the information. However after its
publication the way in which children was taught became very child centred with them becoming
more involved in their learning and the lessons were adapted in a way that would benefit and interest
the child as the Plowden states that .Many people

Ice Life Fighting in the National Hockey League(NHL) has been an ongoing brutal way of getting
fans excited. The past years the number of fights have dropped, with only 344 fights last season, the
fewest number within the past 15 years (Adam Vingan). For those people who oppose fighting this
comes as good news, as this area of the Hockey has been investigated heavily. In 1922, rule 56 was
introduced into the National Hockey League which was supposed to regulate the fighting in the NHL
and was called the official NHL rulebook(Wikipedia). Still today we have fighting in the National
Hockey league even with rule 56 strictly enforced. It s not just the fighting that s the problem
anymore, it s the concussions and other side effects/injuries from it. Players are suffering far greater
head trauma each time they get in a fight which further on in life leads to multiple health problems. If
fighting were to be banned in the NHL, would it still be the same? Some may say yes, but others
speculate no. For now, fans don t see any changes coming soon so why not enjoy it better yet play it.

As a result, the interactions between protein molecules exceed protein water interactions, and the
solubility decreases. Moreover, the differences in the amino acid sequence makes proteins differ in
their salting in and salting out behavior. This is the basis for the fractional precipitation of proteins by
means of salt. Most commonly used salt is ammonium sulfate because it is available in highly purified
form and because of its high solubility. (Boyer, 2000) Proteins can also be fractionally precipitated by
adjusting the pH, temperature and dielectric constant. Variations in pH also change the state of
ionization of the functional groups, and hence, the net charge of the protein. Usually, the protein s
solubility is at its least at the isoelectric point pI and increases on either side of the pI. At the pI, the
net charge of the protein is zero and the protein molecules do not repel each other. As a result, protein
protein interactions are increased and the solubility is at its lowest. (Boyer, 2000) Meanwhile, if
temperature is increased denatures the proteins. Proteins then unfold and the non polar groups which
were previously in the interior of the molecule become exposed. This leads to a decrease in the
solubility of the protein in aqueous environment. Addition of ethanol, methanol, acetone and the like
decreases the dielectric constant and thus decreases protein s solubility. (Boyer, 2000) The

intercession in Mexico, was a prepared conflict between the United States of America and the United
Mexican States from 1846 to 1848. It followed in the wake of the 1845 American expansion of the
free Republic of Texas, which Mexico still considered its northeastern locale and a bit of its district
after its acknowledged severance in the 1836 Texas Revolution 10 years sooner.
After its Treaty of Córdoba with getting opportunity in 1821, from the Kingdom of Spain and its
Spanish Empire as New Spain as far back as 300 years, and a short attempt distinctive things with

the war affected the Mexican government to help movement from the U.S. on its upper east periphery

the Mexican region of Texas to make a support. In any case, the as of late named Texians opposed the
Mexican organization of President/dictator Antonio López de Santa Ana, who had usurped the
Mexican Constitution of 1824, in the resulting 1836 Texas Revolution, making a republic not apparent
by Mexico, which still promised it as a segment of its national area. In 1845, the Texan Republic
agreed to an offer of expansion by the U.S. Congress, and transformed into the 28th state in the Union
on December 29 that year.
In 1845, as of late picked eleventh U.S. President James K. Polk (1795 1849, served 1845 1849),

Toxic Nail Polish Study
Toxic Nail Polish Health Fears Something to watch for. A new report out of California has found toxic
nail polish that is labeled Toxin Free , though the industry says the report is short on perspective. The
labeling doesn t seem to match the ingredients in the bottles. Here s how the study was done. The team
of researchers purchased 25 nail products in May 2011 and sent samples to a laboratory who examined
the samples for three chemicals known as the toxic trio dibutyl phthalate and toluene along with
formaldehyde. These substances have been a concern because of the potential health effects,

This program was begun after San Francisco enacted such an ordinance at the end of 2010. To be
classified as a safe salon, the establishment must use products without the toxic trio along with other
chemicals as well. The Nail Manufacturers Council does not approve of inaccurate labeling. They also
said that none of the levels given in the report offer a health and/or safety risk. A statement from the
Professional Beauty Association s Nail Manufacturers Council said that the brands tested aren t major
brands and aren t available in every salon. You can buy the products at beauty supply shops or online.
Just be aware that chemicals with well known health concerns could be in the products you buy, even
if the label says toxic free . Toxic nail polish and other toxin containing nail products are a bigger
concern for salon technicians than consumers, still it s smart to be aware and informed. There are
other products besides nail care items that have these chemicals, and exposure can accumulate. If you
re worried, you might consider limiting the number of manicures or pedicures you get. Of course if

Central Venous Catheters Case Studies
Central venous catheters (CVC) have become the most efficient means to administer long term, vital

hemodialysis etc. (Gorji, Rezaei, Jafari, Cherati, 2015, p.1). Its clinical relevance has become
extremely significant in relation to treating patients with all sorts of medical diseases who necessitate

The study randomized 341 patients into two groups, one received 10 mL NS flushes while the other
received heparin (3ml, 10units/ml) flushes. A pertinent critique of the study was how the sample
population was limited to one hospital setting without comparisons to other hospitals as a means to
heighten its justifications on how these inconsistencies between the two flushing mechanisms exist.
This being said, it neglected to show the reality that one hospital may use a protocol indicating nurses
to use 10ml saline flushes yet the hospital down the road may have a protocol implicating 5ml of
heparin flushes. In effect, to give a better representation of the issue being examined, it d be more
valid to conduct a provincial study with various other hospitals included to gather more pertinent data.
Also, a speculated issue within the study reflected not accounting the demographical differences of its
study group. The study didn t specify the characteristics of their sample population like if males or
females were used, genetic differences in cultural groups, or the age groups used as it just mentioned
that it didn t take into account individuals under 18 years of age. Data about the sample population

Theme Of Appearance Vs Reality In Macbeth
In real life, many define their trust by judging solely on others by their appearances. Trust is valued if
one is to appear trust worthy or not. Though sometimes, appearances are deceiving. The theme of
Appearance versus reality refers to the entire world in this book. Many of the characters such as
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are deceived by what seems real, but is not. This mistaken judgment of
what is real or not shadows the consequences that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth encounter. At first
Macbeth s characters gives the impression of bravery and strength, and also appears at one point, that
he is capable of being a warrior. But throughout the book, it is well aware that Macbeth s character has
no relation to what his true character is. Macbeth is nothing like anyone perceived him as being.

Persuasive Essay About Undocumented Immigrants
My Uncle risked his life crossing the border, his family, and his future. But he was determined to be
with the love of his life, my aunt, no matter how risky it was. He was terrified, no other emotion was
coursing through his mind. He just wanted to make it there, and he did. He got lucky, unlike many
other undocumented immigrants who cross the border. and they are labeled dangerous and should be
evacuated as if they are investing our country. But like my uncle, they are coming here for a better
opportunity, because they believe in America. They believe in us, so why should we not believe in
them? Undocumented immigrants should be able to stay in America, any age, and have a chance to get
legal without complications. Because Immigrants are an improvement to our country, we are all
immigrants, immigrants are as much of a person as born Americans are. Letting undocumented
Immigrants stay in our country, isn t just a plus for them, it s a plus for us. They are rising our
population, and they help our economy, a lot! Many people, including the president, think that
immigrant workers increase labor market competition, and bring down wages for everyone. Lucky,
this is misguided, and driven into false information. Immigrants do not take up space in employment.
So they are not taking away anything from native workers, If anything, they are providing more
business for us to purchase from. People also think that terrorist are why immigrants are judge, and

Observation can be made on a macro and micro scale, as behavior of a large group can affect the

that satisfies its government. Reaching a desirable achieved status seems hard to accomplish and only
possible if conformed to the Ministry s regime. Sam, however, was offered a promotion by the master

When thyroid hormone levels drop too low, the hypothalamus secretes TSH Releasing Hormone
(TRH), which alerts the pituitary to produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The thyroid responds
to this chain of events by producing more hormones (Sargis, Robert M., 2016, para. 3). The two main
hormones that the thyroid produces and releases are tri iodothyronine, T3, and thyroxine, T4.
According to the Endocrine Web, A thyroid that is functioning normally produces approximately 80%
T4 and about 20% T3, though T3 is the stronger of the pair (Sargis, Robert M., 2016, para. 6). Also,
thyroid produces calcitonin, which helps control blood calcium level. There are many disorders and
diseases that are linked with the thyroid. Having too much or too little of the thyroid hormone is
known as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, abnormal thyroid growth, nodules or lumps within the
thyroid gland, and thyroid cancer.
One of the most common thyroid diseases out there is Hashimoto s thyroiditis, or better known as

Essay about Theodore Roethke s Root Cellar
Theodore Roethke s Root Cellar
Theodore Roethke was raised in Michigan, where cities and towns are woven with lakes, streams, and
rivers. This atmosphere gave Roethke a mystical reverence for nature, (McMichael, 1615) and allowed
him to take a grotesque image and transform it into natural magnificence. A great example of this is
Roethke s poem Root Cellar. The poem describes a cellar, which most people would consider to be a
death baring, cold place. Instead, Roethke gives the dungeon life and enchantment. The first line gives
the reader an idea that the cellar is awake. In the second line, there is a description of the plants left in
numerous boxes that search for a bit of light to help them continue their existence. The ... Show more

Plant roots are not frequently compared to snakes, but Roethke seems to successfully make the
comparison using both a metaphor and simile in the same line:
Shoots dangled and drooped,
Lolling obscenely from mildewed crates,
Hung down long yellow evil necks, like tropical snakes. (1617)
Personification is a literary mode used when the author gives an inanimate object a human quality.
This also helps Roethke to create his imagery. He even gives the dirt on the basement floor life:
Nothing would give up life:
Even the dirt kept breathing a small breath. (1617)
When first reading this poem, Roethke reminded me of my granny s cellar. As a young child, my
family and I would take an annual trip down to Clinton, Indiana. This is where my granny (great
grandmother) lived. All these trips consisted of the same thing: playing Bunco, catching fireflies, and
taking a bath in her white ceramic bathtub. Each year it was interesting to see how much I had grown
and how hard it was for me to fit into the tub. The rest of my family used the shower, which was
located in the cellar of her house. Roethke describes it well in the first line of his poem, Nothing
would sleep in that cellar, dank as a ditch. (1617) It was dark, dusty and infested with spiders so I
refused to enter the stairwell. When I was about nine years old, my parents decided it was time for me
to start taking showers in the dungeon. As

Community Based Health Promotion Programs
COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTION
Introduction
Community Based Health Promotion is a comprehensive, systematic, coordinated approach to long
term health behavior change by influencing the community (cultural) norms through education and
community organization. Studies show that most Americans want to lead healthy lives and are eager
to improve their lifestyles. In fact, many continuously attempt to change unhealthy behaviors, only to
fail. Most health promotion strategies assist individuals in changing health risk behaviors: self help
pamphlet distribution, individual counseling, group education classes, support groups, and health risk
appraisals. Careful evaluation of these strategies has shown that long term behavior change is very
difficult for most participants. The failure rate can be 80% or more. The best predictor of health
behavior and long lasting successful behavior change is often the culture in which a person lives.
Health promotion programs need to make it possible for the community to support healthy behaviors.
To do this successfully, the community and its leadership must be mobilized to provide community
based health promotion programs.

Analysis Of Big Two-Hearted River Hemingway
Big Two Hearted River, the climax of Hemingway s stories featuring Nick Adams, was one of
Hemingway s finest and most thought provoking works. Throughout this two part story, the author
makes use of extensive description, yet manages to reveal very little about his protagonist s
motivation. Nick is a wonderfully complex character; across the numerous tales preceding Big Two
Hearted River, he endures a number of traumatizing experiences which implant deep rooted emotional
issues. By the time of his finale, Nick has become physically and emotionally detached from the
world, afraid to reflect and dig too deep into himself for fear of what he might uncover. These intricate
feelings are explored in further detail in Big Two Hearted River, and displayed indirectly through a
series of subtle images and metaphors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Michigan was a sentimental state for Hemingway, having spent summers there as a child, and Nick is

saloons that had lined the one street of Seney had not left a trace. This is an extremely powerful scene,
a once lively community replaced by scorched land and abandoned buildings, without a semblance of
its former prosperity. For Nick, this must have represented the happier, simpler times of his childhood,
now replaced with apathy and broken by past experiences. Shortly after, however, Nick does take

An interesting thought that Francesca uses is when she talks about Lancelot in a kind of comparison to
her own situation. Time and again our eyes were brought together by the book we read; our faces and
paled. To the moment of one line alone we yielded (132). Francesca s use of flushed and paled allows
Dante to fully embrace the immerse passion that the lovers felt. It was not simply that they wanted
each other in a mental kind of way. They actually physically craved each other, which is painted by
Francesca when speaks of the physical attributes. Francesca then describes her lover as trembling,
which she once again is a physical reaction. Almost everything that Francesca describes to Dante is all
in an inevitable physical reaction, rather than her subjective thoughts or intention. The two lovers
could be likened to magnets, literally being pulled into on another. Although Francesca does not

which seemingly means that she is still vengeful about the ordeal. Even in Hell, where her situation

Persuasive Essay On Government Spending
Government spending has been a major concern for numerous years. Many individuals believe the
United States is the land of opportunity and the most powerful country in the world, but we re heading
into another potential financial crisis. The U.S. has currently exceeded twenty trillion dollars in
national debt from fighting unnecessary wars, economic stimulus packages, tax cuts, wasteful
spending and lastly, government corruption. Although there is transparency in where taxpayers
funding is allocated, I believe more accountability is needed within our government. If the United
States continues adding to its enormous debt, we could also experience a credit default. If the U.S.
were to default for example, the value of the dollar would drop, interest rates would rise causing
inflation and for these reasons, it could lead to another recession. While some policymakers believe
increasing taxes is the solution to our debt concerns, the government needs to cut spending and
eliminate deficits. Many economists claim that cutting spending will only hurt the economy, but it has
been attested spending cuts would shift resources from mismanaged government programs to more
productive private activities, furthermore increasing the overall gross domestic product. I believe the
government needs cuts within public spending in order to reduce the national debt. The Department of
Defense is allotted nearly six hundred billion dollars annually to best serve and protect our country,
our friends and allies, and our natural interests in today s global security environment. While I m a
supporter of the DOD s initiatives, I feel administrative waste within the Pentagon could be addressed.
According to the Defense Business Board, the Defense Department was paying a staggering number
of people 1,014,000 contractors, civilians and uniformed personnel to fill back office jobs far from the
front lines. Ironically, that workforce only supported 1.3 million troops on active duty, the fewest since
1940. To add insult to injury, an internal study has also been performed exposing the Pentagon burying
evidence of $125 billion in bureaucratic waste according to the findings by The Washington Post.

Ambition And Detection In Seth Gordon s Film King Of Kong
Seth Gordon s documentary King of Kong produced in 2007 is a very competitive and tensing video.
It expresses the gamers as very focused individuals and explains the hunger of winning for them. The
director Seth Gordon shows a contrast between ambition and obsession through codes and convection
as well as characteristics. The codes and conventions in the documentary also play a vital role in
portraying different aspects of personalities in different characters. They change your perspective
about certain people or events and make you more aware of what is going on. Billy Mitchell, one of
the players in the documentary, was shown extremely logical and very professional. In disparity with,
Steve Wiebe, another gamer, who was portrayed as a very hardworking and ambitious man. Having
said that, there were other characters in the documentary which helped shape these two players
identity and portrayal. Seth Gordon succeeds in persuading us to think a particular type of way
towards different roles played in the documentary. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Director has shown the audience that without gaming, Billy would be nothing but a person selling
sauce. This can be seen as, in every interview he is usually filmed in his restaurant or in his study. On
the other hand, Steve was shown more of a family guy and talented. You can see these qualities in him
as he was filmed in many different places, such as, the playground, Swimming pool and also in his
garage. The director showed Steve s talents through making him play the drums, the piano and also
adding a clip of Steve playing basketball and teaching. By all this evidence, you can see that the
director tried to show Steve as the good guy and portrayed him as a friendly and gifted

Strategic Alliance Vs. Acquisition M AAnd Organic Growth
STRATEGIC ALLIANCE: A strategic alliance is an agreement between two or more parties to pursue
a set of agreed upon objectives needed while remaining independent organizations. This form of
cooperation lies between Mergers Acquisition M A and organic growth. Partners may provide the
strategic alliance with resources such as products, distribution channels, manufacturing capability,
project funding, capital equipment, knowledge, expertise, or intellectual property. The alliance is
cooperation or collaboration which aims for a synergy where each partner hopes that the benefits from
the alliance will be greater than those from individual efforts. The alliance often involves technology
transfer (access to knowledge and expertise), economic specialization, shared expenses and shared
risk. INtRODUCTION: Nowadays, the commercial competition has surpassed the limits of the
previous era in which dominant markets are protecting their set market shares. Mega commercial
activity back then was completely regulated by the government. The United States has privatized a lot
of sectors related to energy, telecommunication, and transportation sectors. In response, the USA
introduced the deregulations in the aviation industry to increase the competition in the aviation
market. In the past few years, the commercial air carriers have formed strategic alliances with each
other which were not possible before this due to the previous regulations. The main reasons for the

The Importance Of Healthy Eating Habits
Good nutrition is a fundamental part of a person s health (Corbin et al., 2016). Healthy eating habits
can reduce risks of disease and support healthy body composition. Eating a diet rich in nutrient dense
foods combined with a regular moderate exercise routine also reduces overall body fat. Poor eating
habits have been linked to four of the seven leading causes of death in the United States. It is
imperative to implement healthy choices and teach our children healthy eating habits so that we can
improve the overall health of families. There are tools available to help people to eat better and to
change to a healthier lifestyle. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has published in
depth informational literature on the best eating habits for Americans called the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans. Their website also provides a number of tools to help Americans make healthy decisions
and track their eating habits. Over the years I have not always made the healthiest dietary choices.
Over the last few years I have made several attempts at eating healthier including Beach Body s 21
Day Fix Diet and the Mediterranean Diet. I was not successful with either of these. Recently I have
started focusing on making more balanced meals that include a protein, a starch, and a vegetable. After
reading through the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, I see that I still have some work to do.
The USDA suggests that a variety of vegetables be consumed, with emphasis

Malcolm Of The Malcolm X Journey
The Malcolm X Journey
Malcolm Little was born in the mid twentieth century, these were difficult times for the black youth.
As Little grew older he knew there needed to be change, he was one of the few people that was
capable of making that happen for the fellow African American and African. At a very young age
Malcolm grasped the concept that there s something not right, that there needed to be an alteration and
thus is where he started his studies. Malcolm needed to be outspoken he wanted to achieve a certain
impact on others. So he began reading into law, that was the only way for him to get some kind of
basic education. In the midst of his devotion to start a revolution, Malcolm Little s father was killed.
The rage and anger he had took over him and Malcolm became rebellious. Malcolm let go of all his
dreams that he once had and he became a troubled child and started committing felonies targeting
white people, such as armed robbery, burglary. In 1946 he was arrested, it was then and there where he
sat and the unconscious became conscious once again all because of a great influence. Malcolm Little
then changed to Malcolm X, he believed that X was his slave name that was lost. Malcolm X was
empowering arising the new man that brought hope and awakened influence to those that mered not to
have a voice of their own. I will try to layout some of the influences that Malcolm had and the impact
he made on others, the achievements that this man made throughout his time

Air Pollution In China
It is no secret that China is one of the fastest growing countries in the nation, and over the past 3
decades China has had the fastest economic growth over all major nations. In conjunction to China s
economic development and industrialization comes the excessive burning of coal as a source of
energy. According to china s ministry of environmental protection 9 out of 10 cities have such robust
developed economy that they fail the countries pollution test. Manufacturing activities are the leading
cause of environmental problems, And as the country continues to burn coal the country shows
dangerous signs of apocalyptic levels. China is the world s largest polluter and they burn almost as
much coal as the rest of the world combined. Industrial areas outside the city burn coal around the
clock in order to power factories, high winds carry particulate matter throughout the country, not only
affecting rural areas, but urban communities as well. China s reasons for using coal as an energy
source, as opposed to alternatives, are that they have a huge resource for coal as well as it is an
inexpensive and reliable source of energy. Although, burning coal is on the decline, it is still a large
part of China s energy structure. It is visibly evident that China s air pollution is at a frightening all
time high. These highly toxic particulate matter levels are not only concerning for the 21 million
residents of Beijing, but as well as the rest of the world. Charlie Cambell a

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy And Person Centered Psychology...
The counseling profession has a broad spectrum of possibilities when it comes to choosing which
psychological approach to take. The field of counseling takes many forms and offers many career
options, from school counseling to marriage and family therapy. As there are numerous styles in
existence, it is important to be aware of the many approaches available to take. For my research two
psychological approaches, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Psychology, will be
critically analyzed and discussed in depth in order to compare the techniques as well as effectiveness
of each.
Foundation of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was developed by Sigmund Freud during the Victorian
Era in Vienna, Austria. Sigmund Freud s psychological works set the base for the profession of
psychology as well as the practice of modern psychotherapy. Freud believed human behavior was
motivated by intrapsychic conflict stemming from the three areas of the subconscious: id, ego, and
superego (Murdock, 2009).
Freud s psychoanalytic approach to therapy had more of a negative view of human nature that Carl
Rogers view. Freud thought human dysfunction developed as a result of poor genetic make up, as well
as deficits (fixations) caused by missed psychosexual developmental stages. In short, human conflict
came about as a result of struggles between the id (primal, instinctual urges), ego (role of self in
reality) and superego (conscience/critic), manifested in the

How Did Denis Diderot Contribute To The Enlightenment
The Enlightenment is a period in history where people began to change the way they think. This
period is also known as The Age of Reason or The Long 18th Century , which occurred during the late
1600s to early 1800s, this period was also enabled by the Scientific Revolution around the 1500s.
During this time there were revolutionary advancements in philosophy, science, literature, art,
religion, and politics. Mainly, this period possessed many great philosophers who used science and
reason to question traditional ideas and the way things were done in European and United States
society. Philosophers had the greatest voices during this time and they were successful in using it to
refine the world. This time in history had a lasting effect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Denis Diderot s works of literature were the most memorable thing of Diderot s career. He wrote
many books, papers, theories that had lasting impressions on so many. The people had access to
education or knowledge through his literature that wasn t found everywhere because his ideas went
against many rules in his society. Diderot wrote as if his ideas couldn t be limited even though they
were, consequences were given to him for many of his books. The most influential book he was a part
of was the Encyclopédie, which he was an editor and writer in. The Encyclopédie is a book filled with
teachings on so many subjects like science, literature, math, religion, and government. The book was
created by many teachers, priests, scientists, mathematicians, and even Diderot had some part in it.
The main purpose of creating the book was to bring knowledge from all over the world, break it down
and help people educate themselves from it. Diderot and the other writers of the book believed that
education was the way towards truth. Diderot undertook the task with the distinguished mathematician
Jean Le Rond d Alembert as co editor and profoundly changed the nature of the publication,
broadening its scope and turning it into an important organ of radical and revolutionary opinion. The
encyclopédistes sought to further knowledge and, by so doing, to strike a resounding blow against
reactionary forces in the church and the state. Diderot acted upon his beliefs through his writing. There
were people who had similar minds as Diderot in the way they saw certain things. He wanted to
change the fact that during his time the French government was a monarchy that limited people and
that the Catholic Church had power which they chose to abuse.

Introduction To Urbanization Of India With Specific...
Elective: Urban Community
Assignment submitted by Sana Rana
3rd semester DSSW
Examine urbanization in India with specific reference to urban infrastructure provisioning.
Introduction
One third of India s total population lives in town and city and it is expected to increase half by
reaching 2025. It is also one of the greater facts that around 60 % of city urban population lives in
slums and this also will definitely grow to a larger by 2025. There are reasons to it such as inadequate
economic position; inadequate finance and lack of transparency in governance and service
provisioning are identified as the root cause of slums growth in urban areas of India. In most of the
country urbanization is planned but in India urbanization is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Anderson, 19664). India s urbanization is least in compared to other countries of the world
urbanization took place very late, between 1951 to 2001, the level of urbanization increased by only
13%, however if we see the census of the country we can see the rise of population in every decade.
More than 2 /3rd populations of India lives in urban agglomerations, agglomeration are those regions
which has population greater than one million. Now the country is facing the rural urban migration in
a large extent. Rural population are migrating to urban areas in search of jobs, majority among them
were unskilled so they get into unorganized sector in the form of labour work force. The cities are
developing in constructing new houses malls, buildings, MNCs Multiplexes, Metros, Roads etc but the
workers involved in this gets very less in return, as they fall under lower level of income group and
hence they are bound to live in slums of the city that is one of the reason slums are un expectangely
getting higher in cities.
In most of the county s cities are planned, Beijing, Hon Kong, Las angles, Paris etc. are one such
examples. According to census urbanization is

Summary Of Can Art Amend History
First of all, I must admit that I identified myself and enjoyed more with the video Can Art Amend
History, by Titus Kaphar compared to The Unheard Story of the Sistine Chapel, by Elizabeth Lev. The
way Mr. Kaphar begins to explain how he ends up loving art was very straightforward as well as on
how he combined his son question to convey an important message, which is the importance of visual
language.
I agree with Mr. Kaphar in many ways. There are people who learn more efficiently through
visualization and one of this kind of people. He explains that painting is a language where everything
in a painting is meaningful, important and coded. However, sometimes because of the composition
structure it is difficult to see other things. By using

  • 2. The Ins and Outs of Cancer Essay The Ins and Outs of Cancer Cancer has affected the lives of each and every one of us alive today. Many people have know someone with cancer, yet even those who haven t have been bombarded with constant reminders of its terrible threat. Although cancer is often referred to as a single condition, it actually consists of more than 100 different diseases, all characterized by the uncontrolled growth, reproduction, and spread of abnormal body cells. All of these diseases are individually unique, yet the basic processes that produce cancers are very similar (Ruddon, 1995). The human body consists of over 30 trillion cells, living in a complex, interdependent harmony. They regulate each other s proliferation; normal cells reproduce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Proto oncogenes induce cell growth and reproduction, while tumor suppressor genes inhibit it. Together, they carefully control the proliferation of cells. However, if a proto oncogene is mutated, it can become a carcinogenic oncogene, driving excessive multiplication. Tumor suppressor genes, on the other hand, contribute to cancer when they are inactivated by mutation (Ruddon, 1995). Luckily, cancerous tumors are not caused by one little mutation in one cell they are caused by multiple mutations in a number of the cell s growth controlling genes. The number of mutations necessary can be as low as two or quite high, depending on the specific type of cancer. Generally, these mutations occur either from mistakes during cell reproduction, or due to DNA damage caused by carcinogens such as tobacco, certain poisons, and UV rays. So, why don t we all get cancer from these things right away? Consider that one of your cells is damaged by poison and becomes mutated. In order for this cell to turn into a cancer cell, the rest of the necessary mutations must also occur in this very same cell. This in itself, is fairly unlikely. It normally takes decades for an incipient tumor to collect all the mutations required for it s malignant growth, which explains why the average age for cancer diagnosis is 67 (Ruddon, 1995). Why, then, do some individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Twisted Darkness Analysis The Twisted Darkness Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote and published many novels and short stories throughout his career, including several published anonymously. More often readers find a his work to be different types of romance followed and surrounded with twists of darkness. Based on Hawthorne s biography you can find most of his characters and the darkness in his stories, come from personal experience. The mix of success and failure during Hawthorne s writing career resembles parts in his story The Devil in Manuscript leading to an unfathomable twist for his readers. Born in Salem Massachusetts in 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a prominent family. His ancestors were some of the earliest to settle in the country; including Nathaniel s late relative John Hathorne who stood as a judge during the Salem witch trials. The passing of his father to yellow fever, Nathaniel at age four was raised by his widowed mother in mournful seclusion (Marks 1). Shortly after the death of his father, his mother moved the family to Maine in 1815 where poetry and romance peaked Hawthorne s interest (Marks 1). Graduating Bowdoin College at the age of twenty five, Hawthorne returned to Salem where he began his writing allegorical stories concerning the moral values of New England (Marks 1). Nonetheless at just twenty eight years of age, Hawthorne anonymously published his first novel Fanshawe covering his time spent in college. Disgusted after the novel went virtually unnoticed, his ... • 4. How Did Malthus Build Food Production In The Ottoman Empire Growth and Food Production in the Ottoman Empire In his 1798 Essay on the Principle of Population, Thomas Malthus defended the proposition that, had population and food increased in the same ratio, it is probable that man might never have emerged from the savage state. Labeled a Malthusian trap after the demographer s work, the theoretical principle holds that, because population increases exponentially, while agricultural output increases arithmetically, periodic premature deaths among the population will be caused by a lack of sustenance. Had a population never overcome the reoccurring demographic trap of an equal increase in food and population, Malthus contends, the life of man as a subsistence farmer would continue to be, as succinctly ... In the Ottoman Empire, immigration from Russia and the upper Balkan Peninsula brought a ten fold increase in iron plow use in Ottoman Bulgaria, and the introduction of the calorie rich potato to Anatolia, which had a beneficial effect of agriculture of Anatolia as a whole. Whether or not the limited introduction of improved techniques and plant species into the Empire was also driving force behind increased production, it still appeared to be caused by the influx of people to the region. Malthus s doomsday prediction of stagnation upon population growth appears to fail when considering the possibility of introduction of new techniques to maximize gains. So far, in the case of the Ottoman Empire, the relationship between changes in population density and agricultural production has proven to be that an increase in the former resulted in a subsequent and equal rise in the latter. • 5. The Importance Of Sexual Identity Development The sexual orientation identity development is a theoretical model that conceptualized the resolution of internal conflict related to the formation of individual sexual identity. For sexual minority people, it is commonly known as the coming out process (Bilodeau Renn 2005). There have been many different models elaborated to explain such process. All of them share similar stages: awareness, crisis, and acceptance (Loiacano 1989). When individuals become aware of their queer feelings and attraction, they try to block these homosexual feelings by constantly denying and minimizing them. This mechanism of defense leaves negative sequelae in their overall psychosocial well being (Bilodeau Renn 2005). Individuals tend to pass by a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, this process profoundly differs among Latino and African American it is based on white middle class gay participants (Lewis and Marshall 2011; Bridges, Selvidge, Matthews 2003). The unique stressors that Latinos and African Americans face on a daily basis have serious implication in their mental health (Loiacano 1989). The queerness experience of Latino and African American folks are very alike. Both ethnic/racial group members not only share culture with similar features, but they also are exposed to the same systematic oppression experience. Latino and African American queer people likewise have to deal with racism, xenophobic and homophobic sentiment, on a daily basis. Such oppression comes from their most meaningful source of support, which is their family and social community. Both African American and Latino culture share a similar concept of meaning and purpose of a family as well as religious belief. These are not very queer friendly and make their community an oppressive environment. It is imperative to examine the interaction between ethnic/racial and sexual identity and how it affects the psychosocial well being of sexual minorities. Likewise, to explore how group therapy can be used to their advantages. • 6. Persuasive Essay On Health Care America is a great nation, that is full of independent people. This is great, it leads to many good inventions and progressive ideas. But when it comes to the way healthcare works, America is lacking compared to the rest of the first world countries. The fully privatized health insurance leaves people of lower income without the access to the great healthcare we as Americans deserve. So, I think that America s healthcare system should be rebuilt where everyone can go to the doctors without fear of the outrageous pricing. America is such a great place, as far as medical advancements. The fact that this is walled off so heavily to most people because of cost is something that needs to change. The problem isn t going to be easy to fix. Whatever you want to say about Obama s presidency his plan with the Affordable Health Care Act was the pioneering steps towards moving our, seemingly ancient, healthcare system into the future. Even as much as Trump hates to admit it he is in favor of this idea too. He has stated that he doesn t think anyone should go without getting help when they are sick. The country needs a base level of insurance. The fact people would rather get drove to the hospital than to call an ambulance because of costs. This shows we really need to think about reforming the way we treat our people. The problem isn t just with serious injuries that require immediate medical attention. People in America treat their bodies like old beater cars and ignore serious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Two Franks and Their Architecture Essay Different architects have different styles because they are trying to get at different things. Architecture is not just about making something beautiful anymore, it is about trying to get across a set of ideas about how we inhabit space. Two of the most famous architects of the twentieth century, one from each side, the early part and the later part up until today each designed a museum with money donated by the Guggenheim foundation. One of these is in New York City, it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The other is in bilbao, Spain, and it was designed by Frank Geary. My purpose of this paper is to interrogate each of these buildings, glorious for different reasons, to show how each architect was expressing their own style. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a very functional approach. I am only going to talk about the outside of Frank Geary s museum because I have never been there, and I have only seen pictures on the internet. This building is surprisingly attractive because the other building that we saw in class of his, his house in Santa Monica, had a great deal of ugliness, to use an official term. His house in Santa Monica was supposed to look unfinished, with an emphasis on the materials used in construction. This building, however, looks as if it has been wrapped in silver. It looks very futuristic, and angular, so it could be functional as a museum as a museum because people will know it holds modern art. I like the way that it catches reflections, almost mirroring the surrounding buildings. So, in these two examples we see very different approaches to architecture. One has an impressive inside and the other one has an appealing outside. Also, both seem to be departures for the architects from their normal modes Wright s building doesn t blend in with nature, and Geary s doesn t look deconstructed into small parts. Now if only they could has worked together on one project, then we would have a museum that would be perfect inside and out. The Falling Water House that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright is an embodiment of organic architecture. It has a stone face that was the same tonal feeling of the rock that surrounds the building. Addams was an advocate of immigrants, the poor, women, and peace. In 1889, she created the hull house. The Hull house was created to help female immigrants become assimilated to the American life style by helping get them a job, learn the language, and receive an education. So it was no surprise that in in 1915, Jane Addams wrote the life changing article Why Women Should Vote . Discuss whether or not the writer was a neutral party. If not, explain the opinions or interests that might have influenced what was written During the 1900 s women were under the idea of the cult of domesticity. This means that the women s place was in the home. They had jobs such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. However, unlike other persuasive article Addams article is different, she believes women should be able to vote but she doesn t bash the male population. She writes an article where she says not only why women should get the vote or why women should have the vote, but rather she talks about why women should vote and why it is the responsibility of women to vote. So two speakers can have inside their brains an identical brain states at the point of making a statement as the extension is separate from the brain state. Putnam is trying to establish the view that 1. The meaning of a term is determined by the psychological state of the person using it 2. The extension of a term is determined by its meaning. • 10. Victim Offender Mediation Research Paper Utilitarianism and victim offender mediation (REFERENTIE). The moral philosopher Jeremy Bentham developed an influential consequentialist philosophy of morality: utilitarianism. Bentham s starting point in his philosophy is that feelings of pleasure and pain direct us in everything, and thereby also direct us in determining what is right and wrong. He believes that pleasure/happiness is intrinsically good, and pain/suffering is intrinsically bad. We strive for the most happiness by trying to maximize pleasure and minimize pain. According to Bentham, the right thing to do is to search for the greatest balance of pleasure over pain in choosing our actions. So in his philosophy, moral behavior is completely dependent on the consequences related to our actions. When applying Bentham s philosophy of morality to criminal justice and in specific victim offender mediation, the most important question to ask is: does it maximize utility? Restorative justice practices are often compared to the traditional criminal justice system, so in our modern day situation Bentham would like to know which of these justice reactions allows for the greatest overall balance of pleasure/happiness over pain/suffering. You can look at this problem in two ways: maximizing utility for the group of victims and offenders, or maximizing utility for society. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says, It was as a solitary traveller that I began to discover who I was and recommends everyone, not just writers, to travel the world and get disconnected because he believes it is beneficial to everybody. Paul Theroux s theory holds true for Cheryl Strayed as her travelling and becoming disconnected proves to be very beneficial to her in many ways. Cheryl starts her trip off naïve and unaware of the hardships her journey will provide. From the very first day she couldn t believe what she d got herself into. Despite this rough start to her journey she soon begins to see her life on the trail as normal. She also lacks a lot of confidence in her hiking abilities at the beginning. She got embarrassed when she would run into other hikers and they would mention the size of her bag or other information that is common knowledge to most hikers. However, later on she begins to become more confident in her abilities and even goes as far as to say she, felt like a hard ass motherfucking Amazonian queen (202). Her newfound confidence is shown as she meets people who are not hikers and is eager to explain to them about the PCT and tell them about her journey, particularly when she meets the reporter for Hobo Times. She earnestly argues that she is not a hobo and calls herself an expert hiker and explains how far she travels and the hardships of the trail. Her newfound confidence shines through during this encounter, as she is no longer the insecure hiker from the start of her trip. Most importantly, Cheryl finds strength and direction throughout her trip. Before her journey her life is a mess, she has just divorced her husband and acquired a heroin addiction. Not only does the fact that she s disconnected keep her from her bad habits, such as heroin, but it also gives her direction with her life. Her journey inspires her to write this novel, which she says she had been ashamed she had not written one before already, and she plans to have a yard sale so she can make enough money until she finds herself a job. At this time many people believed that environmental influences played a significant role in the development of students. (Bartlett et al., 2001). The Plowden documented different recommendations into how children should be taught and strongly emphasised the importance of the first 6years of a child s education. The report also looked closely at any social inequalities that might affect the child s learning such as family size and/or overcrowding. The Plowden also had a major influence on today s education, it introduced a new style of teaching and learning, that hadn t been used before. Before the report was published, education was taught in a very traditional and didactic way of the teacher standing at the front of the class and sharing their knowledge to the children who expected to just listen and take in the information. However after its publication the way in which children was taught became very child centred with them becoming more involved in their learning and the lessons were adapted in a way that would benefit and interest the child as the Plowden states that .Many people ... Ice Life Of The National Hockey League Collin Kozubal Mr. O Connor English IV 11/30/2016 Ice Life Fighting in the National Hockey League(NHL) has been an ongoing brutal way of getting fans excited. The past years the number of fights have dropped, with only 344 fights last season, the fewest number within the past 15 years (Adam Vingan). For those people who oppose fighting this comes as good news, as this area of the Hockey has been investigated heavily. In 1922, rule 56 was introduced into the National Hockey League which was supposed to regulate the fighting in the NHL and was called the official NHL rulebook(Wikipedia). Still today we have fighting in the National Hockey league even with rule 56 strictly enforced. It s not just the fighting that s the problem anymore, it s the concussions and other side effects/injuries from it. Players are suffering far greater head trauma each time they get in a fight which further on in life leads to multiple health problems. If fighting were to be banned in the NHL, would it still be the same? Some may say yes, but others speculate no. For now, fans don t see any changes coming soon so why not enjoy it better yet play it. Though pro hockey is a sport known for its violence, it is a great career for the players that can make it into the pros. Various proteins were extracted from different sources: 1.67 g yeast invertase, 1.03 g egg white albumin, and 5.15 g of milk casein. Activity assay for invertase was performed using Benedict s test and the enzymes inverting action on sucrose was confirmed. Warburg Christian Method and Bradford Assay were also employed to determine the protein concentration in the albumin and the casein samples. The concentrations for the albumin and casein samples were found to be 0.519 and 0.327 mg/mL, respectively based on Warburg Christian Assay; and 6.5x10 3¬ and 1.9x10 2 mg/mL ... Moreover, the differences in the amino acid sequence makes proteins differ in their salting in and salting out behavior. This is the basis for the fractional precipitation of proteins by means of salt. Most commonly used salt is ammonium sulfate because it is available in highly purified form and because of its high solubility. (Boyer, 2000) Proteins can also be fractionally precipitated by adjusting the pH, temperature and dielectric constant. Variations in pH also change the state of ionization of the functional groups, and hence, the net charge of the protein. Usually, the protein s solubility is at its least at the isoelectric point pI and increases on either side of the pI. At the pI, the net charge of the protein is zero and the protein molecules do not repel each other. As a result, protein protein interactions are increased and the solubility is at its lowest. (Boyer, 2000) Meanwhile, if temperature is increased denatures the proteins. Proteins then unfold and the non polar groups which were previously in the interior of the molecule become exposed. This leads to a decrease in the solubility of the protein in aqueous environment. Addition of ethanol, methanol, acetone and the like decreases the dielectric constant and thus decreases protein s solubility. (Boyer, 2000) The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This atmosphere gave Roethke a mystical reverence for nature, (McMichael, 1615) and allowed him to take a grotesque image and transform it into natural magnificence. A great example of this is Roethke s poem Root Cellar. The poem describes a cellar, which most people would consider to be a death baring, cold place. Community Based Health Promotion Programs COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTION Introduction Community Based Health Promotion is a comprehensive, systematic, coordinated approach to long term health behavior change by influencing the community (cultural) norms through education and community organization. Studies show that most Americans want to lead healthy lives and are eager to improve their lifestyles. In fact, many continuously attempt to change unhealthy behaviors, only to fail. Most health promotion strategies assist individuals in changing health risk behaviors: self help pamphlet distribution, individual counseling, group education classes, support groups, and health risk appraisals. Careful evaluation of these strategies has shown that long term behavior change is very difficult for most participants. The failure rate can be 80% or more. The best predictor of health behavior and long lasting successful behavior change is often the culture in which a person lives. What was not visible was the aged oak tree with TD + MH = FOREVER carved into the side or the small hideout beneath the bridge where the Tommy and Margaret shared their first kiss. Suddenly the door screeched open and Margaret quickly shut the lid of her laptop just as Mark walked in. He kissed her on the cheek, Drinking already sweetheart? It s only six o clock . In many ways those who are personally identified by Dante in the Inferno are there for specific reasons. Each fallen character plays the role of shedding light on a specific human emotion or vice that acts as a pitfall. Time and again our eyes were brought together by the book we read; our faces and paled. To the moment of one line alone we yielded (132). Francesca s use of flushed and paled allows Dante to fully embrace the immerse passion that the lovers felt. It was not simply that they wanted each other in a mental kind of way. They actually physically craved each other, which is painted by Francesca when speaks of the physical attributes. Francesca then describes her lover as trembling, which she once again is a physical reaction. Almost everything that Francesca describes to Dante is all in an inevitable physical reaction, rather than her subjective thoughts or intention. The two lovers could be likened to magnets, literally being pulled into on another. Although Francesca does not directly dwell on her demise, she does mention that her killer will be at an even deeper part in Hell, which seemingly means that she is still vengeful about the ordeal. • 39. Persuasive Essay On Government Spending Government spending has been a major concern for numerous years. Many individuals believe the United States is the land of opportunity and the most powerful country in the world, but we re heading into another potential financial crisis. The U.S. has currently exceeded twenty trillion dollars in national debt from fighting unnecessary wars, economic stimulus packages, tax cuts, wasteful spending and lastly, government corruption. Although there is transparency in where taxpayers funding is allocated, I believe more accountability is needed within our government. If the United States continues adding to its enormous debt, we could also experience a credit default. If the U.S. were to default for example, the value of the dollar would drop, interest rates would rise causing inflation and for these reasons, it could lead to another recession. While some policymakers believe increasing taxes is the solution to our debt concerns, the government needs to cut spending and eliminate deficits. Many economists claim that cutting spending will only hurt the economy, but it has been attested spending cuts would shift resources from mismanaged government programs to more productive private activities, furthermore increasing the overall gross domestic product. I believe the government needs cuts within public spending in order to reduce the national debt. The Department of Defense is allotted nearly six hundred billion dollars annually to best serve and protect our country, our friends and allies, and our natural interests in today s global security environment. While I m a supporter of the DOD s initiatives, I feel administrative waste within the Pentagon could be addressed. According to the Defense Business Board, the Defense Department was paying a staggering number of people 1,014,000 contractors, civilians and uniformed personnel to fill back office jobs far from the front lines. Ironically, that workforce only supported 1.3 million troops on active duty, the fewest since 1940. To add insult to injury, an internal study has also been performed exposing the Pentagon burying evidence of $125 billion in bureaucratic waste according to the findings by The Washington Post. According to china s ministry of environmental protection 9 out of 10 cities have such robust developed economy that they fail the countries pollution test. Manufacturing activities are the leading cause of environmental problems, And as the country continues to burn coal the country shows dangerous signs of apocalyptic levels. Industrial areas outside the city burn coal around the clock in order to power factories, high winds carry particulate matter throughout the country, not only affecting rural areas, but urban communities as well. China s reasons for using coal as an energy source, as opposed to alternatives, are that they have a huge resource for coal as well as it is an inexpensive and reliable source of energy. Although, burning coal is on the decline, it is still a large part of China s energy structure. It is visibly evident that China s air pollution is at a frightening all time high. The field of counseling takes many forms and offers many career options, from school counseling to marriage and family therapy. As there are numerous styles in existence, it is important to be aware of the many approaches available to take. For my research two psychological approaches, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Psychology, will be critically analyzed and discussed in depth in order to compare the techniques as well as effectiveness of each. Foundation of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was developed by Sigmund Freud during the Victorian Era in Vienna, Austria. Sigmund Freud s psychological works set the base for the profession of psychology as well as the practice of modern psychotherapy. Freud believed human behavior was motivated by intrapsychic conflict stemming from the three areas of the subconscious: id, ego, and superego (Murdock, 2009). Freud s psychoanalytic approach to therapy had more of a negative view of human nature that Carl Rogers view. Freud thought human dysfunction developed as a result of poor genetic make up, as well as deficits (fixations) caused by missed psychosexual developmental stages. In short, human conflict came about as a result of struggles between the id (primal, instinctual urges), ego (role of self in reality) and superego (conscience/critic), manifested in the ... The main purpose of creating the book was to bring knowledge from all over the world, break it down and help people educate themselves from it. Diderot and the other writers of the book believed that education was the way towards truth. Diderot undertook the task with the distinguished mathematician Jean Le Rond d Alembert as co editor and profoundly changed the nature of the publication, broadening its scope and turning it into an important organ of radical and revolutionary opinion. The encyclopédistes sought to further knowledge and, by so doing, to strike a resounding blow against reactionary forces in the church and the state.
