Origins of American Slavery
Robert Marra
Section 103
The Origins of Slavery in America
The institution of slavery is a black mark on the history of America. The atrocities that were allowed
to occur for hundreds of year are revolting to think about. History books and classes often detail the
horrors of slavery, and the effects it had on our agricultural economy. However, they do not really
explain why the practice of slavery was allowed to flourish in the colonies. They just present the facts
of its occurrence. They do not consider the mindset of the people who thought it was justifiable to
enslave a specific race. This paper seeks to answer this question using evidence from the studies of
Degler, the Handlins, and Morgan. Slavery was not brought into ... Show more content on

The blacks regardless of age or gender were always priced higher than their white counterparts, and
the lengths of terms were absent. Their value was higher because their service was for life, explaining
the absence of the length of term (Degler). Undoubtedly there are many more cases of blacks being
treated as slaves and inferiors than there are of whites, even though there was a plethora of white
servants. However, the presence of a large number of free Africans or those with defined terms of
services shows us that the discrimination of blacks cannot be the sole cause of slavery. While slavery
had definitely begun, it was not uniform or consistent by any means. Had there not been another factor
involved, it is not unfathomable that different, albeit poorly treated, classes of Africans would have
formed. Continuing on the last point, were it not for specific economic conditions, slavery would not
have evolved into the enterprise that it did. The Handlins argue that blacks were just as unfree as the
whites who were unfree were. They claim that economic circumstance was the reason that blacks were
enslaved. Due to the tobacco revolution the planters needed more laborers. However, the Europeans
had heard of the harsh treatment of servants. This dissuaded them to make the voyage to the colonies.
Therefore, the owners had to make servitude more appealing so they lessened the terms and restricted
punishment (Handlin). The blacks

The Influence of Organisational Structure on...
The success or failure of an organisation can often be attributed to the sum of their parts such as staff,
profit, products, strategy, technology, environment, structure and culture. These parts or factors can
directly contribute to the strengths or weaknesses of an organisation and they are all interrelated. This
essay will examine organisational structure and organisational culture and the influence mechanistic
and organic structures have on organisational culture.
Organisational structure, as defined by Hodge, Anthony Gales (1996), is the sum total of the way in
which an organisation divides it s labour into distinct tasks and then coordinates them (p.32). It is a set
of structural elements used to manage the total organisation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
A major weakness of this structure can be its effect on communication. Communication in this model
often travels vertically from teams to senior management rather than across all functional groups. This
can cause a duplication of efforts, where multiple teams are trying to achieve the same objective or
doing the same work, a lack of cooperation between groups where they only focus in what is in their
own best interests and the change of focus from the business goals to the individual groups goals
(Banner Gagne, 1995).
Divisional and conglomerate designs have some similarities. Both are based on separate businesses
operating under the larger framework of a parent company or organisation, however, in a divisional
structure the businesses are directly related to each other whereas with a conglomerate structure the
businesses are unrelated separate entities. Both structures are based on product departmentalisation,
which is where each business is responsible for producing their own service or goods, responsible for
profits and losses and have their own independent general managers (Davidson et al, 2009).
A divisional design will often report into a central head office and is able to utilise shared services
such as human resources, site services and payroll. This structure allows each separate business to
focus solely on their specific objectives,

Legal Concepts Of The Firm
1.1 Legal Different Concepts of the Firm:
The precise legal details of the corporation s differ across countries. The company law of the U.K is
similar to the company law of the U.K because they share a common origin. The managers in both
countries have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders. In other words, they have a strong requirement to
act in the interests of shareholders. The channel through which shareholders exercises control of
company affairs is the board of directors. The board is elected by shareholders and typically on a one
share vote basis. Sometimes multiple classes of shares exits, the main difference between classes
being the number of votes each share has attached to it. The board of directors consists of a mix
outside directors and inside directors, the latter being the top executives of the firm. It is rare that the
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is not on the board. In both U.S and U.K the CEO often acts as
chairman as well. Once elected the board of directors of directors specifies the business policies to be
pursued by the firm. The role of management is to implement the policies determined by the board.
Shareholders have very little say in the affairs of the company beyond electing directors. For example,
it is the directors who decide on their own compensation, without any input from shareholders. A
committee of outside directors determines the senior management compensation. Except in unusual
circumstances, such as a proxy fight, the outside

Camille Yang. Mr. Engle. English 3. 20 April 2017. Distortion
Camille Yang Mr. Engle English 3 20 April 2017 Distortion of the American Dream in The Great
Gatsby The novel The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald is a tragedy. It tells the story of Jay Gatsby, who
was pursuing his love and the American Dream, finally reunited with his first love, Daisy Buchanan
and was hoping to be with her once again. However, the harsh reality made his misty dream come to
an end. Through analyzing Gatsby s lifestyle, his obsession of Daisy, and his social status, the essay is
going to reveal that the American Dream which once has brought opportunities and wealth to the
American people, most of the times could just exist in dreamers fantasy, just like pretty fairy tales. The
concept of the American Dream has changed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So feel extremely disappointed, and barren spiritually. And thus people started to get into the blind
pursuit of material pleasure. In the early 1920s, businesses were also prevailing, and a new Jazz Age
was born. The U.S. at this time, becomes a place where everyone is yearning for money, and people
become tools for making money. The purity of the American Dream, which was originally regards to
hardship and self success was gone forever. Despite it is this flourishing but void time period that
provides Gatsby with the extreme wealth he has built, and it seems that he is finally going to bring
home the bacon and accomplish his fabulous life with Daisy. It still leads him to the grave at the end.
Gatsby s way to fall can be traced to dreaming, waking, failing, and finally lost in despair. In this
respect, the life experience of Gatsby and the experience of America in the first decades of this
century are strikingly similar. America was also once a lively land with people who have passion and
great dreams. However, it is now replaced by modernization. The most typical example is The Valley
of Ashes, where the workers keep their noses to the grindstone but still live a harsh life. The author
describes as A fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens;
where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent
effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the

for someone to rule it. Three powerful men would rise to the occasion and answer the call. Everybody

and even contempt for one another to join forces and dominate the government of Rome, even

Caesar heard the news in Ravenna, and knew that he had to make a choice between prosecution and
rebellion; preferring the dignity of war over the humiliation of a process, Caesar chose to rebel,
quoting his favorite poet Menander, the die is cast. In the night of 10/11 January, the Thirteenth legion
advanced to Rimini, where he could control the passes across the Apennines. In doing so, he crossed
the river Rubico, thereby invading Italy and provoking the Second Civil War. However, it turned out
that the Senate had made a disastrous mistake. It had believed that the issue was between a rebel and
the legitimate rulers, and it had expected that the towns of Italy would send troops in defense of the
authority of the Senate and the Roman People s liberties. But Italy was skeptical about its champions,

Difference Between The Spatiality Of Position And Situation
The Difference Between the Spatiality of Position and Situation In the third chapter of Part 1 of
Phemomenology of Perception Meurlo Ponty discusses the orientation of the body and how we
perceive of it within the world. To do this he introduces two key concepts; spatiality of position and
spatiality of situation. Both these concepts apply to our experiences being a body within the world but
have very distinct features regarding our perceptions of our bodies and how we conceive of and
interact with the world. This paper will look at the distinction between the two concepts using Meurlo
Ponty s Schnieder and attempting to determine the significance of defining these two concepts in such
a way. To begin, Meurlo Ponty starts by discussing how the parts of our body relate to each other in a
very particular way. We do not conceive of ourselves as a collection of closely spatially related organs
but rather as a whole contributing to our body schema (PhP 100). Our body schema is a gradually
developing psychological construct that helps us develop a summary of our experiences as a body
including out movement as a whole and unifies us a being (PhP 100). The body schema that we
develop plays into the spatiality of position and the spatiality of situation and how the body appears to
us. Spatiality of position refers to the body within space, in this case the body is perceived of as part of
the external objective world. Meurlo Ponty says that this concept is consistent with idea of

Organic Farming Controversy
Chemical free and conventional husbandry differences stem from their own methods utilized during
the comestible production. As a consequence, a wide variety of the most contentious debates have
revolved around the issue of whether avant garde farming techniques pave the way for better living

Conversely, natural cultivation is an advanced technology that does not harm the environment as well
as the biosphere. As a matter of fact, no longer do cultivated areas contaminated, pesticide residual,
emaciated and degraded. Instead, this technique assists boost biodiversity and the biosphere reserve in
nature and protect the environment from antiquated farming practice. It would be the height of folly,
however, not to mention some drawbacks of organic agriculture and advantages of intensive farming.
For one thing, organic farming, while conventional farming is manufacturing bigger yields, cannot
produce enough food to assuage the world s appetite. For another thing, it would be rather difficult for
the impoverished and underprivileged to afford high priced products from natural farming, which,
consequently, can in part limit their interests of utilizing fresh food. Meanwhile, intensive agriculture,
with curtailed prices, can meet the requirements of more people. In conclusion, there is no denying
that organic and intensive farming play a vital role in life. Notwithstanding, everything frequently
parallels with its downsides and these methods are not an exception. Anyway, with the rational ways
of exploiting these technological advances and future development in their security, hopefully all
problems will be eliminated and the merits can be

Symbolism Of The Spider In The Chosen Chapter 51
In Chaim Potok s novel The Chosen, specifically chapter 9, Potok was able to symbolically delineate
Reuven and Danny s lives with a reference to a spider entrapping a fly. To start off, Potok introduced
the spider in the allegory as Reb Saunders. When Reuven noticed what was going on near him, he
recalled seeing the spider and saying, A spider had spun a web across the corner of the upper rail, and
there was a housefly trapped in it now... the spider, a small, gray, furry looking spider, with long,
wispy legs and black eyes, move across the web toward the fly (Potok 173 174). Reb Saunders can be
seen as the spider from mainly the physical characteristics of it as well as the actions. For example,
when Reuven describes the spider having black eyes and gray, furry looking , Reb Saunders falls

Also, when Reuven saw that the spider had created a spider web, it can symbolize how Reuven was
looking from the outside in to an entire different life for Danny and how Reb Saunders had created a

convey a message about Danny. As Reuven was observing the fly he noted, The fly s tiny black legs
flayed the air fiercely, then its wings were free again, buzzing noisily, but it s body remained intact
(Potok 174). Danny can be seen as the fly because he was being kept from the outside world by his
father, the spider, with his web he created in order to ensure Danny became a

The second attack is on a small boy in the sea at a crowded beach on Amity Island. It starts with the

watching out for sharks. The camera does a long shot of Brody s point of view, which we see a woman

the shark was to be there it would be camouflaged and also the splashing attracts sharks. Next, there is
a close up shot of a small child singing, seeing the small child singing is calming which lulls us into a
false sense of security, making the imminent attack scarier as you do not expect it. A view from under

Fulcher.
Mark and Jodey have incorporated three livestock species Black Hereford cattle, Kiko goats and
Kunekune (pronounced koo knee, koo knee) pigs at their Huggins, Mo., farm in Texas County. They
feel each species complements the other through natural pasture management, and brush and weed

Mark and Jodey moved to the Ozarks in October after establishing the operation in 2013 in Georgia.

The Earthquake Of India, China, Bangladesh, And Bhutan
On April 25, 2015 the country of Nepal and the surrounding countries of India, China, Bangladesh,
and Bhutan experienced an earthquake with the magnitude of 7.8 (Kumar). The earthquake triggered
an avalanche on Mount Everest killing nineteen people. Another avalanche was triggered in Langtang
Valley a reported two hundred and fifty people are missing. Aftershocks continued well there after one
reaching as high as 6.7. The death toll has not reached well over 7,250 (Kumar). The number of
injured is 14,122. The UN estimates well over three million people need food and other assistance.
Thousands of people have fled the areas especially around Kathmandu fearing aftershocks or trying to
get to family member s homes in remote areas. At one point Nepal was one of the least urbanized
countries in the world (NORMAN). They are now accelerating in the world of urbanization.
Kathmandu and a few other neighboring cities many of buildings are somewhat structurally sound, the
buildings are usually pagoda style and shikhara style (NORMAN). Many of the new buildings are
well maintained, the older residential buildings and smaller temples have fallen into despair
(NORMAN). Rural architecture is very plain, they are one or two stories. The houses are made of mud
brick and a thatched roof. Village houses are located near river valleys or along ridge tops The first

A Graveyard in Asheville
For this journal review, I have decided to do a graveyard in Asheville which is very well known. The
cemetery Riverside Cemetery has existed since 1885 and was built by the Asheville Cemetery
Company and in 1952 was sold to the City of Asheville. For this review I ll be focusing on the various
styles of graves seen throughout the cemetery, while also emphasizing the meaning of the different
artistic symbols seen. I ll also make sure to note the significant graves and mausoleums that are home
to some of the most descriptive artwork. The graveyard is home to more than 14,000 graves some of
which carry important meanings or information. I believe graveyards are sacred art museums and
while walking through one provides a much different experience, some similarities are important for
us to see.
The City of Asheville s Riverside Cemetery is located in Montford, less than 2 miles from downtown.
It provides over 87 acres of grounds and is a protected tree area. Today the area operates under the
City of Asheville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. Looking through the various
headstones, I can see many similarities among the different symbols. Looking past just the symbols
we can see a level of intricate artwork laid down by the art of hand carving and engraving. Hand
carving and engraving headstones is an ancient practice in which artists and craftsmen have formed
extraordinary memorials from pieces of raw stone.
The craft of engraving headstones over time

The Effects Of Violent Video Games On Children s Behavior
The effect of violent video games on children s behavior has been the major concern of numerous
researchers over the last several decades. Indeed, a great number of researches conducted by
psychologists show that regular exposure to violent video games has both long term and short term
negative effects on a player s behavior. Aggressiveness and lack of empathy are considered to be two
main outcomes of constant playing games with violent content. However, it should be noted that the
content is not the only criteria that should be taken into account when measuring games effects on
behavior. Indeed, much attention should be paid to the difficulty of games and time spent on playing.
Thus, a brief overview of studies concerning the violent video games effect and those disproving this
idea along with the analysis of other factors affecting children s behavior such as moral standards and
family environment will show that violent video games are not principal factors that affect children s
behavior and cause child violence.
When analyzing different studies proving the idea that all violent video games lead to aggressiveness
and violence, it is important to mention that all 3 main types of studies have both advantages and
disadvantages. Anderson and Swing distinguished the following types of studies: (a) experimental; (b)
cross sectional correlational; and (c) longitudinal ones (Paludi 47). Thus, experimental studies are
focused on manipulating exposure to violence via media and

The Historical Backgrounds Of Emi Essay
This section outlines the historical backgrounds of EMI in terms of a paradigm shift in teaching
content subjects through English language. This section provides information under three EMI
periods, namely before, during and after transitional EMI periods.
Before an EMI period, Content based Instruction (CBI) and Content and Language Integrated
Learning (CLIL) were the well known approaches to teach subject contents through a second or
foreign language (L2) in western countries. CBI is an approach to L2 teaching that focuses on target
language and content (Brinton, Snow, Wesche, 1989; Crandall Tucker, 1990). Swain and Johnson
(1997) pointed out that CBI is most often associated with the genesis of language immersion
education in North America in 1965. They also clarified that immersion is an innovation in language
education in Canada where French was used as a medium of instruction (MOI) for students whose
home language was Canadian English. CBI had a similar principle to immersion which L2 is a
medium of instruction. However, CBI showed a marked difference in characteristics when it had three
models of teaching (Brinton, Snow, Wesche, 1989; Davies, 2003). The first model was theme based
language , of which content and language specialists created learning topics based on students
preference. The second model was adjunct language in which language specialists linked language to
content lessons. The third one was sheltered content where content specialists

The Bad Luck Kennedys Essay
The Kennedy family, the quintessential all American family, filled with some of the country s best and
brightest. That special family contains a soldier, a few senators, and even a president, the famous John
Franklin Kennedy. However, some of us have probably heard about the bad luck this family seems to
run into, from a botched lobotomy to that famous JFK assassination. The whole entire family seems
cursed, those ghastly curses ranging from Rosemary Kennedy s misdiagnosis and rather unfortunate
botched lobotomy, to John F. Kennedy s assassination. It s sad to see a well respected family go
through such tragedies, it s almost as the world was plotting against these people. In this essay, I will

However, according to Ronald Kessler, she was able to write endearing letters, dance, and even do

past the range of mental retardation. As Rosemary grew older though, her once sweet disposition
turned bitter. Joe Kennedy, Rosemary s father banned her from the household, after which, he
contacted two surgeons in Washington state: Dr. Freeman and Dr. Watts. Dr. Freeman supervised Dr.

from those many years remembers making a rather small surgical incision through her skull, near the
front, and on both sides. As. Dr. Watts performed the surgery, Dr. Freeman asked Rosemary questions
such as reciting the Lord s Prayer, to sing God Bless America or count backwards. Her pulse and
blood pressure rose as Dr. Watts continued to cut. As the surgery went on, she began to grow
incoherent, they soon stopped. Many symptoms described by Rose and Kathleen included irritability

Managed Care organizations commonly known as MCOs basically are healthcare delivery systems in
the United States which are organized to help in managing costs, value of the healthcare provided and

of Medicare health benefits as well as other essential health services through special arrangements
such as contractual arrangements between the different state Medicare and Medicaid agencies and

CDHP and MCOs drives patients into influencing the prescribing physicians which then motivates
many patients to become more aware of their respective health plans. On the same note, such
integration has led to many patients going for cheaper medication such as for generic drugs (Bergeson
Dean, 2006). Moreover the integration has also limited the patient choice as it has limited the

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals At A Un Summit
The United Nations General Assembly has officially adopted the Sustainable Development Goals at a
UN summit in New York City as of September 27, 2015 that are to be globally implemented by 2030.
This essay will discuss goal 13 take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts , along
with its five targets.
Are the Targets Truly Measurable?
The most concretely measureable target under SDG 13 is 13.a. A deadline for this target is clearly
stated along with the funds and specific parties needed to create a global impact. One will be able to
identify progress, or lack of, by 2020. Target 13.b is unspecified and extremely vague, not indicating
effective strategies for its measurability. LDC s often contribute least to climate change yet are
expected to suffer the greatest, there is no specific source in this target to aid these countries in raising
their planning capacities. Target 13.1 is vague making it difficult to assess if a country perhaps has not
achieved this target, it only focuses on extreme events when developing resilience and adaptive
capacity to gradual shifts in climate change is crucial (ICSU, 2015). The target would need further
specification and a timeframe. Target 13.2 can be measured as one can identify if and when climate
change protocols are implemented into a nations policies and whether or not they are put into effect,
however focus on only the national level is too narrow as mitigation policies can be used on different
scales such as

The Hostility Between the Montagues and the Capulets ...
The Hostility Between the Montagues and the Capulets in Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare William
Shakespeare s play Romeo and Juliet has a major theme of conflict. The main conflict in the play is
the feud between the two wealthy families: the Montagues and the Capulets . Shakespeare does not
state the reason for the hostility between the two families. Shakespeare may have done this to indicate
how long the feud has been going for. Shakespeare creates conflicts between characters in the play.
One conflict is between Tybalt and Romeo . This conflict is interesting because it is between two
contrasting characters. Tybalt is very arrogant and has an aggressive attitude. While Romeo is quiet ...

Friar Lawrence provides another example of conflict when he marries Romeo to Juliet in opposition to
the authority of their fathers. This conflict is unique because Romeo and Juliet s fathers did not found
out about the marriage until towards the end of the play. This creates suspense in the story. Sometimes
there is conflict inside the mind of individuals. Romeo visualizes where his destiny leads him to. I fear
too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars . This line shows
disturbing pictures of Romeo s fait. Shakespeare uses conflicts inside the minds to create mystery.
Love and hate is a very common occurrence in Romeo and Juliet . There are many characters that
show a loving attitude towards someone. Romeo and Rosaline love was not pure Romeo was just
infatuated with Rosaline, this all stopped once Romeo meets Juliet. Another example of love is
between Romeo and Friar Lawrence. Romeo and Friar Lawrence love is different. This is because
they share a brotherly type of love. Nurse and Juliet provide another example of love in the play. Their
love is similar to the love that Romeo and Friar Lawrence share. However the love between the Nurse
and Juliet is considered to be stronger because Nurse has nurtured Juliet since she was a baby. There is
evidence of this in the play. On Lammas eve at night shall she be

Three Major Macromolecules
DNA is a molecule that converts an organisms genetic blueprint. Every person s body has the same
DNA. Apportion of your DNA is located in the cells nucleus, but a small portion of DNA can also be
found in the mitochondria. The DNA structure is very important because it defines who we are and
how we look. The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine,
guanine, cytosine, and thymine. The nucleotides are joined to one another in a chain by covalent
bonds between the sugar. human DNA have 3 billion bases, and more than 99 percent of those bases

The cell is the computer or the hardware and the DNA is the program or code. Within each string of
DNA are sets of instructions called genes. A gene tells a cell how to make a specific protein. Proteins
are used by the cell to perform certain functions, to grow, and to survive. Although DNA looks like
very thin long strings under a microscope, it turns out that DNA has a specific shape. This shape is
called a double helix. On the outside of the double helix is the backbone which holds the DNA
together. Watson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 for the discovery of
the DNA structure. He continued his research into genetics writing several textbooks as well as the
bestselling book The Double Helix which chronicled the famous discovery. n the early 1950s,
scientists had learned a lot about genetics, but they still didn t understand the structure of the DNA
molecule. Scientists needed to understand the structure of DNA in order to fully understand genetics.

Don t give up, even in the worst times. Sometimes you are faced with a challenge that makes you

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz, is about a 14 year old boy named Alex Rider which becomes a
spy at 14 after his Uncle died and his first mission is to find information about Sayle Enterprises,
owned by Herod Sayle, and why they are going to donate hundreds of computers to england. In this
mission, Alex is able to enter the building as a teen testing the Stormbreaker but, still has to go

The novel Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz uses description effectively. An example is, Alex hears
a knock on the door, it was a butler named Mr.Grin, he told him to follow him and Mr.Grin begins to
open a door. There was a green glow as his fingerprints were read, and a moment later, the door slid
soundlessly open. Everything was different on the other side of the door. From the art and elegance of
the main house, Alex could have stepped in to the next century (102) By using a lot of descriptions, is
easier to picture what Alex is seeing and what is happening. Another example is, after alex got caught
and punched by Mr.grin and alex waked up His head was thumping and the side of his face was
swollen where Mr. Grin had hit him. His arms were twisted behind him and the tendons in his
shoulder were on fire. (178) Especially in a book with action and some violence, being descriptive
really helps because you are able to see and read what is happening and what they are feeling. Hence,
the description used in Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz is effective. Description in a book can

Evolution And Innovation And The Development Of Aerospace...
Introduction Evolution and innovation are two of the most important factors in the development of
aerospace design. When faced with a design problem the decision has to be made whether to develop
the current idea, or whether to explore a new idea. The decision chosen will usually be a mixture of
both. Brief History of Optimisation Optimisation is an extremely old method and was used as far back
as when Newton used it to calculate maximum and minimum values for functions. One of the first
times that optimisation methods were used within aerospace was by Goddard (1919), not long after
the First World War. He used this method to maximize the height of rocket trajectories, where the
rockets performance was approximated over discrete intervals and the needed nozzle velocity was
calculated by using a trial and error approach. Although a great discovery, optimisation didn t really
exceed until the invention of computers in the late 1950 s and late 1960 s [1]. Introduction Chapter:
This chapter should set the scene. o It should define the scope of your literature review and identify
why it is relevant and timely. o What is the benefit of this research topic to the society in the next three
to five years and in the next seven to ten years? o Then you should introduce your chapters briefly
describing what you have written in those chapters Optimisation Optimisation methods are defined by
the type of problem that they can begin to solve. The categories of the problems that

The more spores that are inhaled the more severe the infection symptoms are. If the Spherules are
diagnosed in the beginning stage of infection then the infected may have a higher chance of survival
for those that have inhaled a large amount. 60% of people infected with Valley Fever will only have
symptoms of a slight mild cold and most will not seek or need medical attention (Davis, 2014) If the
Spherules arrive at the lungs and are able to grow and reproduce and break open multiple amounts of
time the infected may show signs of the flu or pneumonia. These symptoms can include cough, fever,
headache, chills, sweats, chest pain or discomfort, and exhaustion. (kerncountyvalleyfever, 2015)
Other symptoms in this phase can include joint discomfort and stiffness, and possible rash outbreak.
These symptoms can last from two to six weeks after infected. Only about 30 35% of people show this
advance of symptoms. (Davis, 2014) The other 1 5% are unfortunate that the Spherules spores were
able to break away from just attacking the lungs and were able to spread to other parts of the body.
With this stage of infection the symptoms are much more severe and can be life threating. Most of the
severe cases are caused because the infected does not seek medical attention to receive anti fungal
medication that stops the spread and assist the immune system in the control. Symptoms of this are

Gravedigger Scene Analysis
Shakespeare uses comic relief in many of his plays to give the audience a break from the intense chaos
that often makes up the dramas. He uses the porter scene in Macbeth as comic relief for the murder of
King Duncan and in Hamlet, he uses the gravedigger scene to relieve the emotions felt for the death of
Ophelia. The gravedigger scene is the most well known scene of comic relief in Hamlet, as it serves as
a much needed break in all of the action and it temporarily changes the tone of play, along with
impacting the overall meaning.
The gravedigger scene distracts the audience from the drama and chaos of the play with two
gravediggers exchanging jokes and singing while digging the grave that Ophelia will be buried in. The

Finally, when Hamlet sees Laertes, Gertrude, and the King all mourning over the loss of Ophelia, he
goes crazy and mad. This shift in emotions within Hamlet signifies a shift in the tone of the play. The
once again chaotic tone lets the reader know that more drama is about to partake. Without the comic
relief in the beginning of this scene, the audience would not have been emotionally ready for the fight
between Laertes and Hamlet. The light tone of comedy helped settle the audience s, and give them a
laugh before diving back into tragedy. Comic relief adds an emphasis to the many themes of Hamlet
by preparing the reader or audience for a serious event or tragedy. While Hamlet is in the graveyard
with Horatio they watch as the gravediggers work and dig up skulls from the surrounding area in order
to make room for Ophelia s grave. Seeing all the skulls lying around, Hamlet realizes that death is
inevitable and all men, even the greatest, eventually become dust. This foreshadows Hamlet s death
because he is finally coming to terms with reality that everyone eventually dies and no matter how
great he thinks he is, he will eventually be laid to rest. Although Hamlet doesn t know that the grave is
Ophelia s at first, he asks questions about whose grave it is and the gravedigger replies joking that he
is digging his own grave and then, the grave doesn t belong to a man or a woman because those are

Paintings have been known to capture the human imagination since the pre historic times. A skilled
artist can evoke a range of human emotions and can portray things like appearances, playing of light

the artists got a new medium for their expressiveness and simulated artistic diversity. The field of non

Also, researchers increasingly sought to automate the process and enhance the sophistication of stroke
placement.
The work by Haeberli[2] enabled people to transform photographs into impressionist paintings with
minimal labor. The user clicked on a photo, and the underlying system automatically placed the virtual
strokes by using the color of the source image. They also added noise to results to enhance the
impressionist effect. However, the first automatic solution was a tool proposed by Litwinowicz [3].
This is the paper which we review first in this report.
Processing Images and Video for an Impressionist Effect
This paper aims producing impressions of the original image, i.e. images that give a sense of an
original image without reproducing it. They happen to have a painterly feel to them and appear as they
have been hand painted. They produce painterly animation from video clips automatically after the
user specifies a few parameters to generate he first frame. After the user s preferences are taken into
account and he approves the first frame, the whole video segment is automatically produced without
further user intervention.
The biggest challenge in videos is to produce a temporally coherent style of animation which avoids
flicker and takes into account the movement of objects in the video. This paper was the first one to use
optical flow to compute the per pixel movement in images and use it to generate a sequence which is

  • 2. Origins of American Slavery Robert Marra Section 103 The Origins of Slavery in America The institution of slavery is a black mark on the history of America. The atrocities that were allowed to occur for hundreds of year are revolting to think about. History books and classes often detail the horrors of slavery, and the effects it had on our agricultural economy. However, they do not really explain why the practice of slavery was allowed to flourish in the colonies. They just present the facts of its occurrence. They do not consider the mindset of the people who thought it was justifiable to enslave a specific race. This paper seeks to answer this question using evidence from the studies of Degler, the Handlins, and Morgan. Slavery was not brought into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The blacks regardless of age or gender were always priced higher than their white counterparts, and the lengths of terms were absent. Their value was higher because their service was for life, explaining the absence of the length of term (Degler). Undoubtedly there are many more cases of blacks being treated as slaves and inferiors than there are of whites, even though there was a plethora of white servants. However, the presence of a large number of free Africans or those with defined terms of services shows us that the discrimination of blacks cannot be the sole cause of slavery. While slavery had definitely begun, it was not uniform or consistent by any means. Had there not been another factor involved, it is not unfathomable that different, albeit poorly treated, classes of Africans would have formed. Continuing on the last point, were it not for specific economic conditions, slavery would not have evolved into the enterprise that it did. The Handlins argue that blacks were just as unfree as the whites who were unfree were. They claim that economic circumstance was the reason that blacks were enslaved. Due to the tobacco revolution the planters needed more laborers. However, the Europeans had heard of the harsh treatment of servants. This dissuaded them to make the voyage to the colonies. Therefore, the owners had to make servitude more appealing so they lessened the terms and restricted punishment (Handlin). The blacks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Influence of Organisational Structure on... The success or failure of an organisation can often be attributed to the sum of their parts such as staff, profit, products, strategy, technology, environment, structure and culture. These parts or factors can directly contribute to the strengths or weaknesses of an organisation and they are all interrelated. This essay will examine organisational structure and organisational culture and the influence mechanistic and organic structures have on organisational culture. Organisational structure, as defined by Hodge, Anthony Gales (1996), is the sum total of the way in which an organisation divides it s labour into distinct tasks and then coordinates them (p.32). It is a set of structural elements used to manage the total organisation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A major weakness of this structure can be its effect on communication. Communication in this model often travels vertically from teams to senior management rather than across all functional groups. This can cause a duplication of efforts, where multiple teams are trying to achieve the same objective or doing the same work, a lack of cooperation between groups where they only focus in what is in their own best interests and the change of focus from the business goals to the individual groups goals (Banner Gagne, 1995). Divisional and conglomerate designs have some similarities. Both are based on separate businesses operating under the larger framework of a parent company or organisation, however, in a divisional structure the businesses are directly related to each other whereas with a conglomerate structure the businesses are unrelated separate entities. Both structures are based on product departmentalisation, which is where each business is responsible for producing their own service or goods, responsible for profits and losses and have their own independent general managers (Davidson et al, 2009). A divisional design will often report into a central head office and is able to utilise shared services such as human resources, site services and payroll. This structure allows each separate business to focus solely on their specific objectives, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Legal Concepts Of The Firm 1.1 Legal Different Concepts of the Firm: The precise legal details of the corporation s differ across countries. The company law of the U.K is similar to the company law of the U.K because they share a common origin. The managers in both countries have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders. In other words, they have a strong requirement to act in the interests of shareholders. The channel through which shareholders exercises control of company affairs is the board of directors. The board is elected by shareholders and typically on a one share vote basis. Sometimes multiple classes of shares exits, the main difference between classes being the number of votes each share has attached to it. The board of directors consists of a mix outside directors and inside directors, the latter being the top executives of the firm. It is rare that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is not on the board. In both U.S and U.K the CEO often acts as chairman as well. Once elected the board of directors of directors specifies the business policies to be pursued by the firm. The role of management is to implement the policies determined by the board. Shareholders have very little say in the affairs of the company beyond electing directors. For example, it is the directors who decide on their own compensation, without any input from shareholders. A committee of outside directors determines the senior management compensation. Except in unusual circumstances, such as a proxy fight, the outside ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Distortion Camille Yang Mr. Engle English 3 20 April 2017 Distortion of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby The novel The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald is a tragedy. It tells the story of Jay Gatsby, who was pursuing his love and the American Dream, finally reunited with his first love, Daisy Buchanan and was hoping to be with her once again. However, the harsh reality made his misty dream come to an end. Through analyzing Gatsby s lifestyle, his obsession of Daisy, and his social status, the essay is going to reveal that the American Dream which once has brought opportunities and wealth to the American people, most of the times could just exist in dreamers fantasy, just like pretty fairy tales. The concept of the American Dream has changed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So feel extremely disappointed, and barren spiritually. And thus people started to get into the blind pursuit of material pleasure. In the early 1920s, businesses were also prevailing, and a new Jazz Age was born. The U.S. at this time, becomes a place where everyone is yearning for money, and people become tools for making money. The purity of the American Dream, which was originally regards to hardship and self success was gone forever. Despite it is this flourishing but void time period that provides Gatsby with the extreme wealth he has built, and it seems that he is finally going to bring home the bacon and accomplish his fabulous life with Daisy. It still leads him to the grave at the end. Gatsby s way to fall can be traced to dreaming, waking, failing, and finally lost in despair. In this respect, the life experience of Gatsby and the experience of America in the first decades of this century are strikingly similar. America was also once a lively land with people who have passion and great dreams. However, it is now replaced by modernization. The most typical example is The Valley of Ashes, where the workers keep their noses to the grindstone but still live a harsh life. The author describes as A fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the ... • 6. Marcus Caesar Dbq Rome, a vast empire that could not control itself, due to how much it had grown, was in a dire need for someone to rule it. Three powerful men would rise to the occasion and answer the call. Everybody thought that the split of power was going to work out, but what they didn t know was it would lead to a civil war. An unstable Republic and a near civil war brought three men to set aside their differences and even contempt for one another to join forces and dominate the government of Rome, even controlling elections, for nearly a decade, (First 1). Caesar heard the news in Ravenna, and knew that he had to make a choice between prosecution and rebellion; preferring the dignity of war over the humiliation of a process, Caesar chose to rebel, quoting his favorite poet Menander, the die is cast. In the night of 10/11 January, the Thirteenth legion advanced to Rimini, where he could control the passes across the Apennines. In doing so, he crossed the river Rubico, thereby invading Italy and provoking the Second Civil War. However, it turned out that the Senate had made a disastrous mistake. It had believed that the issue was between a rebel and the legitimate rulers, and it had expected that the towns of Italy would send troops in defense of the authority of the Senate and the Roman People s liberties. But Italy was skeptical about its champions, and showed little enthusiasm to defend the senatorial constitution, (Gaius ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Difference Between The Spatiality Of Position And Situation The Difference Between the Spatiality of Position and Situation In the third chapter of Part 1 of Phemomenology of Perception Meurlo Ponty discusses the orientation of the body and how we perceive of it within the world. To do this he introduces two key concepts; spatiality of position and spatiality of situation. Both these concepts apply to our experiences being a body within the world but have very distinct features regarding our perceptions of our bodies and how we conceive of and interact with the world. This paper will look at the distinction between the two concepts using Meurlo Ponty s Schnieder and attempting to determine the significance of defining these two concepts in such a way. To begin, Meurlo Ponty starts by discussing how the parts of our body relate to each other in a very particular way. We do not conceive of ourselves as a collection of closely spatially related organs but rather as a whole contributing to our body schema (PhP 100). Our body schema is a gradually developing psychological construct that helps us develop a summary of our experiences as a body including out movement as a whole and unifies us a being (PhP 100). The body schema that we develop plays into the spatiality of position and the spatiality of situation and how the body appears to us. Spatiality of position refers to the body within space, in this case the body is perceived of as part of the external objective world. The Effects Of Violent Video Games On Children s Behavior The effect of violent video games on children s behavior has been the major concern of numerous researchers over the last several decades. Indeed, a great number of researches conducted by psychologists show that regular exposure to violent video games has both long term and short term negative effects on a player s behavior. Aggressiveness and lack of empathy are considered to be two main outcomes of constant playing games with violent content. However, it should be noted that the content is not the only criteria that should be taken into account when measuring games effects on behavior. Indeed, much attention should be paid to the difficulty of games and time spent on playing. Thus, a brief overview of studies concerning the violent video games effect and those disproving this idea along with the analysis of other factors affecting children s behavior such as moral standards and family environment will show that violent video games are not principal factors that affect children s behavior and cause child violence. When analyzing different studies proving the idea that all violent video games lead to aggressiveness and violence, it is important to mention that all 3 main types of studies have both advantages and disadvantages. This section provides information under three EMI periods, namely before, during and after transitional EMI periods. Before an EMI period, Content based Instruction (CBI) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) were the well known approaches to teach subject contents through a second or foreign language (L2) in western countries. CBI is an approach to L2 teaching that focuses on target language and content (Brinton, Snow, Wesche, 1989; Crandall Tucker, 1990). Swain and Johnson (1997) pointed out that CBI is most often associated with the genesis of language immersion education in North America in 1965. They also clarified that immersion is an innovation in language education in Canada where French was used as a medium of instruction (MOI) for students whose home language was Canadian English. CBI had a similar principle to immersion which L2 is a medium of instruction. However, CBI showed a marked difference in characteristics when it had three models of teaching (Brinton, Snow, Wesche, 1989; Davies, 2003). The first model was theme based language , of which content and language specialists created learning topics based on students preference. The second model was adjunct language in which language specialists linked language to content lessons. The third one was sheltered content where content specialists ... The most concretely measureable target under SDG 13 is 13.a. A deadline for this target is clearly stated along with the funds and specific parties needed to create a global impact. Scientists needed to understand the structure of DNA in order to fully understand genetics. The Cavendish Laboratory had put together a team to try and solve the problem before an American team led by the famous biochemist Linus Pauling could. Then it became a race to see who would figure it out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novel Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz uses description effectively. An example is, Alex hears a knock on the door, it was a butler named Mr.Grin, he told him to follow him and Mr.Grin begins to open a door. There was a green glow as his fingerprints were read, and a moment later, the door slid soundlessly open. Everything was different on the other side of the door. From the art and elegance of the main house, Alex could have stepped in to the next century (102) By using a lot of descriptions, is easier to picture what Alex is seeing and what is happening. Another example is, after alex got caught and punched by Mr.grin and alex waked up His head was thumping and the side of his face was swollen where Mr. Grin had hit him. His arms were twisted behind him and the tendons in his shoulder were on fire. (178) Especially in a book with action and some violence, being descriptive really helps because you are able to see and read what is happening and what they are feeling. Hence, the description used in Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz is effective. Description in a book can make very realistic, maybe too ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Evolution And Innovation And The Development Of Aerospace... Introduction Evolution and innovation are two of the most important factors in the development of aerospace design. When faced with a design problem the decision has to be made whether to develop the current idea, or whether to explore a new idea. The decision chosen will usually be a mixture of both. Brief History of Optimisation Optimisation is an extremely old method and was used as far back as when Newton used it to calculate maximum and minimum values for functions. One of the first times that optimisation methods were used within aerospace was by Goddard (1919), not long after the First World War. He used this method to maximize the height of rocket trajectories, where the rockets performance was approximated over discrete intervals and the needed nozzle velocity was calculated by using a trial and error approach. Although a great discovery, optimisation didn t really exceed until the invention of computers in the late 1950 s and late 1960 s [1]. Introduction Chapter: This chapter should set the scene. o It should define the scope of your literature review and identify why it is relevant and timely. o What is the benefit of this research topic to the society in the next three to five years and in the next seven to ten years? o Then you should introduce your chapters briefly describing what you have written in those chapters Optimisation Optimisation methods are defined by the type of problem that they can begin to solve. The categories of the problems that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Valley Fever Research Paper Dangerous Air In the central valley of beautiful California sits an attractive town of Bakersfield. Population of around 370,000. Most widely known for agriculture and oil production. However what it is also known for, for those who have the pleasure of living there is a risk of contracting Coccidioidomycosis also known as Valley Fever or Cocci. Anyone who lives, works, is around, or even just passes through is at risk of taking a breath in at the wrong time and being infected with this invisible to the naked eye disease. Cocci Coccidioidomycosis is called Valley Fever because of the location where it is more abundant. Valley Fever got its name Coccidioides immitis from two scientist Emmet Rixford and T.C. Gilchrist in 1896. It can be found ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The more spores that are inhaled the more severe the infection symptoms are. If the Spherules are diagnosed in the beginning stage of infection then the infected may have a higher chance of survival for those that have inhaled a large amount. 60% of people infected with Valley Fever will only have symptoms of a slight mild cold and most will not seek or need medical attention (Davis, 2014) If the Spherules arrive at the lungs and are able to grow and reproduce and break open multiple amounts of time the infected may show signs of the flu or pneumonia. These symptoms can include cough, fever, headache, chills, sweats, chest pain or discomfort, and exhaustion. (kerncountyvalleyfever, 2015) Other symptoms in this phase can include joint discomfort and stiffness, and possible rash outbreak. These symptoms can last from two to six weeks after infected. Only about 30 35% of people show this advance of symptoms. (Davis, 2014) The other 1 5% are unfortunate that the Spherules spores were able to break away from just attacking the lungs and were able to spread to other parts of the body. With this stage of infection the symptoms are much more severe and can be life threating. Most of the severe cases are caused because the infected does not seek medical attention to receive anti fungal medication that stops the spread and assist the immune system in the control. Symptoms of this are coughing of blood, lesion on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Gravedigger Scene Analysis Shakespeare uses comic relief in many of his plays to give the audience a break from the intense chaos that often makes up the dramas. He uses the porter scene in Macbeth as comic relief for the murder of King Duncan and in Hamlet, he uses the gravedigger scene to relieve the emotions felt for the death of Ophelia. The gravedigger scene is the most well known scene of comic relief in Hamlet, as it serves as a much needed break in all of the action and it temporarily changes the tone of play, along with impacting the overall meaning. The gravedigger scene distracts the audience from the drama and chaos of the play with two gravediggers exchanging jokes and singing while digging the grave that Ophelia will be buried in. The first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, when Hamlet sees Laertes, Gertrude, and the King all mourning over the loss of Ophelia, he goes crazy and mad. This shift in emotions within Hamlet signifies a shift in the tone of the play. The once again chaotic tone lets the reader know that more drama is about to partake. Without the comic relief in the beginning of this scene, the audience would not have been emotionally ready for the fight between Laertes and Hamlet. The light tone of comedy helped settle the audience s, and give them a laugh before diving back into tragedy. Comic relief adds an emphasis to the many themes of Hamlet by preparing the reader or audience for a serious event or tragedy. While Hamlet is in the graveyard with Horatio they watch as the gravediggers work and dig up skulls from the surrounding area in order to make room for Ophelia s grave. Seeing all the skulls lying around, Hamlet realizes that death is inevitable and all men, even the greatest, eventually become dust. This foreshadows Hamlet s death because he is finally coming to terms with reality that everyone eventually dies and no matter how great he thinks he is, he will eventually be laid to rest. Although Hamlet doesn t know that the grave is Ophelia s at first, he asks questions about whose grave it is and the gravedigger replies joking that he is digging his own grave and then, the grave doesn t belong to a man or a woman because those are living ... • 36. A Survey Of Image Based Artistic Rendering Techniques A survey of Image Based Artistic Rendering techniques Introduction Paintings have been known to capture the human imagination since the pre historic times. A skilled artist can evoke a range of human emotions and can portray things like appearances, playing of light in surfaces, mood etc. on the paper. Similarly, with the invention of photography in the 19th century, the artists got a new medium for their expressiveness and simulated artistic diversity. The field of non photorealistic rendering started off in the early nineties with the aim of using the power of computer graphics and create an interface between the two fields. With the exponential rise in computational power and the advances made in computer graphics, the field has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, researchers increasingly sought to automate the process and enhance the sophistication of stroke placement. The work by Haeberli[2] enabled people to transform photographs into impressionist paintings with minimal labor. The user clicked on a photo, and the underlying system automatically placed the virtual strokes by using the color of the source image. They also added noise to results to enhance the impressionist effect. However, the first automatic solution was a tool proposed by Litwinowicz [3]. This is the paper which we review first in this report. Processing Images and Video for an Impressionist Effect This paper aims producing impressions of the original image, i.e. images that give a sense of an original image without reproducing it. They happen to have a painterly feel to them and appear as they have been hand painted. They produce painterly animation from video clips automatically after the user specifies a few parameters to generate he first frame. After the user s preferences are taken into account and he approves the first frame, the whole video segment is automatically produced without further user intervention. The biggest challenge in videos is to produce a temporally coherent style of animation which avoids flicker and takes into account the movement of objects in the video. This paper was the first one to use optical flow to compute the per pixel movement in images and use it to generate a sequence which is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
