Varariegated Plants
The purpose of this study was to test the production of CO2 in Variegated plants compared to non
variegated plants using leaves from the plant Aegopodium Podagraria. The hypothesis states that if the
leaf is mostly white, then it will have lower rates of photosynthesis than the leaves with more green
coloring. CO2 sensors were utilized in order to measure the production of CO2 of the variegated and
non variegated leaves. The data, which was calculated by a two sample t test assuming equal
variances, backed the hypothesis. It is concluded that leaves with less variegation will have higher
photosynthetic rates than more variegated leaves. The purpose of this study was to test if the white

It is oftentimes used in salad and soups (L. , 2003). Methods: Using the CO2 sensor to measure the
rate of CO2 intake and the LabQuest data logger, the ability to photosynthesize among variating leaf
colors was tested. Aegopodium Podagraria leaves were collected, three with more than 50 percent
white coloring (experimental group) and three with less than 50 percent white coloring (mostly green,
control group). Three mostly green leaves were first to be tested with the CO2 sensor and paired with
data logger for ten minutes. After this was done, the same procedures were done with the remaining
three leaves that are mostly white. This resulted in three different trials, each using three different
leaves. The experiment took no longer than 70 minutes to conduct. The independent variable was the
variegation of the leaves, while the dependent variable was the GPP. The GPP measures the total
amount of energy generated by the leaves in ppm/minute. A two sample t test assuming equal
variances was performed on the data to show the results of variation between two sample groups.
Results: Figure 1 shows the data that indicated our hypothesis is proven. Variegated leaves are shown
to be more photosynthetically inefficient, by producing more CO2 than variegated leaves in the light.
This data was produced by a two sample t test assuming equal variances, the test showed non
variegated leaves had much higher CO2 levels than the non

Rhetorical Knowledge Skill Transfer Analysis
It is hard to pinpoint if these areas were being transferred or were already there to being with. Since
most aspects of the Habits of Mind as well as the WPA Outcomes are self evident. But if I was to
pinpoint them, they would all be written, due to the fact I have not done any multimedia work in other
classes this semester. As a result the Rhetorical Knowledge skill transfer was lessened. Except when it
comes to the idea of using key rhetorical concepts through analyzing and composing a variety of texts.
For my Advanced Criminological Theory class, and essay is written twice a week. So rhetorical
concepts are always needing to be used. Critical Thinking, Reading, and Composing on the otheris

Persuasive Essay On Cheating On Homework
In Survey I, 91.9% of the participants reported that they have cheated on at least one homework
assignment; however, when asked why they receive answers, 13.5% of the participants stated that they
do not receive answers (Appendix D). Therefore, it can be concluded that some students believe that
cheating on homework assignments is not considered as immoral. This may further explain why
students cheat.
Furthermore, 91.9% of students reported cheating at least once, albeit 51.4% of students stating that it
s bothersome when others cheat (Appendix D). This is due to self serving bias, which is when people
blame other individuals when their action negatively affects them, while they blame the situation
when their act negatively affects others (Boyes, 2013). For example, if someone gets into a car
accident, one automatically assumes that person is a bad driver, while if one gets into a car accident
himself, one will find excuses and say it was not their own fault. Similarly, when a student cheats in
high school, they find reasons to justify that action, even when they know it is wrong, which is the
case with 62.2% of students in this survey (Appendix D). However, when another student cheats in the
same class, it is bothersome to some students because they see it as unfair and disrespectful on the
student s part.
Moreover, 24.3% of students reported that they cheat because they want to help their friends out
(Appendix D). Therefore, when they see others, who are not their friend

The American Liberal Democratic Values Essay
American Liberal Democratic Values
I. The definitions of democracy and liberalism
Liberalism and democracy are two different concepts, liberalism is a political philosophy which is
based on the principle of individual freedom, it calls for guarantees of the rights of the individual,
including freedom from arbitrary authority, freedom of religion, the right to own and exchange private
property, rights to equal opportunity in health care, education, and employment, and the rights to
political participation and representation. While democracy is a set of political procedures involving
participation and competition. Most democracies are liberal democracies to some degree. because
political participation, competition, and accountability are perhaps the best guarantees that individual
freedoms will be preserved, thus the terms liberal and democracy often go hand in hand.
II. Liberal democracy the U.S. goal
U.S. policies aim to boost the spread of liberal democratic values. In the nineteenth century, the U.S.
didn t play an important role in global governance, as the geographical reach of the United States
political influence expanded, liberal democracy promotion turned into a major part of U.S. foreign
policy, the aim of promoting democracy abroad had been a core element in how the United States
exercises its international power. Moral Universalism , introduced by America s project of liberalism
during the twentieth century, is an ideology based on the liberal

Production of an Artificial Knee Joint
Production of an artificial knee joint begins with investment casting, a process that involves little to no
shearing. Investment casting produces products that have good surface quality and high spatial
accuracy. It is advantageous for parts with more complex shapes or materials that are difficult to form.
This method involves seven steps and results in the preliminary shapes of the femoral and tibial parts.
1. Wax Pattern Production Wax patterns function to shape the cavity within the mold. Though it is
called a wax pattern, the pattern may also include materials such as wax, stearic acid, plastic and other
industrial chemicals [3]. There are two ways to produce a wax pattern. For both, a wax cylinder is first
taken from heat preservation equipment and placed on a hydraulic die casting machine to remove any
air or geocerite from the wax. In one process, the wax is then poured into the mold and swirled around
until the inner surface is covered with an even coating. This is repeated until an appropriate thickness
is reached. The second method is to pressure inject the liquid wax into an aluminum mold. The mold
is then turned upside down so the liquid wax is removed and the remaining wax layer is left to cool
and harden. 2. Wax Pattern Assembly In order to improve productivity, workers usually assemble
multiple patterns on a holder made of wax. They are held together with melted wax, producing a
pattern tree so that many wax patterns can be made at once. Patterns with

The Golden Age of Sail in Saint John
Even as the Golden Age of Sail was coming to a close, Saint John had remained at the top the fourth
largest shipbuilding center in the world and one of the greatest in North America. Their affluence took
a turn during 1877, when the Great Fire of Saint John devastated the city. It shattered not only the
lives of city shipbuilders and merchants, but crippled local citizens as well. Summers in Saint John
were typically dry and muggy, though on June 20, 1877 there was an eerie uncharacteristic breeze.
Although the cause of the original spark remains unknown, it is believed to have started from
McLaughlan Son s boiler shop or from a nearby sawmill. As wood is a naturally rapid burning agent,
it led to the quick demise of many wood built city structures. The structures in the Market Square area
burnt rapidly destroying over 80 hectares (200 hundred acres) and 1612 structures including eight
churches, six banks, fourteen hotels, eleven schooners and four woodboats in just over a nine hour
period. It was a period of despair, as men and women were completely drained after dragging bedding,
pieces of furniture and other articles through the streets, a vain task in many cases, as the new places
of refuge sought out often proved as unsafe as those that were deserted. Several business owners and
residents lost everything they had ¬ leaving many Saint John natives with nowhere to go. Support
quickly began to pour in from all around the world, with donations reaching in

Metaphors In August Wilson s Play Fences
August Wilson s play Fences utilizes strong metaphors in relaying the deeper meaning of the actual
story. The main theme that provides the key to understanding the multiply imagery in this play has to
do with how one s past affects their future, importance of family, the American Dream and
personal/cultural history. Throughout August Wilson s play Fences , it is clearly shown how much
Troy, the father of an African American family, is pulled economically by all of the characters
surrounding him. Taking on the role of the breadwinner to his wife and children reminds Troy how his
father hated doing the same thing and did so with antipathy. The influence of economics along with
past experiences in Troy s life makes him resentful towards his ... Show more content on

The play is set during the 40 s and 50 s, during this Era African Americans faced considerable
obstacles in their everyday lives due to Jim Crow laws and unwritten, racially biased social codes.
These laws and behaviors created strictly segregated barriers, and discrimination pervaded most areas
of life. Despite the ongoing hardships, the 1940s was a time of creativity, increased economic
opportunity and the beginning of the modern civil rights movement. It is as well here where Wilson
talks about how during this time, black athletes had become an integrated part of professional and
college sports. Most all white teams of the World War II and previous years began to include African
Americans by 1947, during the time Jackie Robinson became the first black to play professional
baseball since the color line was drawn in the 1890s. Needless to say, the change still didn t bring the
same opportunity and equality most African Americans had hoped for. Which is why we tend to see
where Troy s angry started, his dream of being in the Major League never came too. Black leagues
began to slowly disappear as more African Americans began to support the now integrated ball teams
Troy Maxson, who had played in the Negro Leagues, found the change to integrated leagues had come
too late; which is why he was too old to play professional

This is an attractive strategy if you have strong market share in a particular market. Such a strategy
can be a suitable reason for acquiring another company or product/service capability provided it is

have to do this yourself (which is normally very expensive and frequently results in simply re
inventing someone else s wheel) often there are potential manufacturing partners out there who are
looking for their own distribution partner with the sort of market presence that you already have. This

Hoovervilles Great Depression
Hoovervilles
The ten year span of the Great Depression showed families how to live without a stable home or even
going to bed without dinner some nights. First off, many people living in the 1930 s were unemployed
and homeless, causing them to live in Hoovervilles. The citizens living in Hoovervilles lived
unsanitary lives and often faced hunger. In fact, Hoovervilles were built out of unwanted material and
provided little shelter. Many put all the blame on the then president, Herbert Hoover, when he refused
to help his people through this life changing event. The comparison of Hoover and his poor decisions
often got compared to the poor situations that his people had to live in. Hoover should no support
during his presidency. Therefore, life during the depression was very difficult, leaving many starving
and living in hoovervilles which provided little to no shelter.
When the stock market crashed, many were left homeless and unemployed. Many started building
houses out of scraps and unwanted materials (Paul). Hoovervilles were then created as they were the
only form of shelter some people had. Living in Hoovervilles were very unsanitary (Newsela). Many
families did not have the resources to build a hooverville, so many crowded in with family.
Hooverville shanties were made of cardboard, glass, lumber, tin and whatever other materials people
could find. (Newsela). Because of that, many of the hoovervilles were torn down by police or

Duality In 19th Century Russia
Just to the east of riotous, industrialising Western Europe sat Imperial Russia, pendent between
tradition and modernity, a vast empire of duality. As if trying to vent her frustrations, 19th century
Russia produced a selection of history s finest writers; each writer packing their work with themes of
duplicity, hope, and heavy social criticism.
Duality was the cardinal theme for Imperial Russia. 19th century Russia was a peasant filled, agrarian
empire rushed through the gawky adolescence of industrialisation. The serfs were only freed in 1861,
and by 1900 around 2.3 million Russians worked inside factories: in a century, Russia had moved
from a feudal system of serfdom to the shores of modernity. A theme of duplicity was carried ... Show

Disillusionment In The Vietnam War
Thomas the Apostle once said that seeing is believing, and rightfully so. A person consciously chooses
to stand firm in his beliefs until given cold, hard evidence that proves a different reality and opens his
eyes. Coming to understand these new facts is a vital part of life that man must face in order to better
understand the natural world. However, new knowledge can become a double edged sword when it
attributes to man s disillusionment. An individual s mindset falls into the depths of despair when
introduced to a harsh reality that clashes with his previous perceptions of right and wrong.
Unfortunately, the entirety of America faced such a reality during the Vietnam War. According to
Spector, a large number of journalists found themselves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, American citizens no longer saw war with such optimism after witnessing the pessimistic
reports that the news chose to televise. In one report, a journalist from CBS Evening News followed
American troops as they pillaged and burnt down a village. The news televised graphic images of the
burning homes, and the journalist on the scene solemnly listed the peaceful Vietnamese that died in
the process. Soon afterward, Americans became outraged (CBSN). At this point, America could no
longer view war as something glorious. The United States not only witnessed as their troops cause
death but also as their troops met their own ends. According to Spector, the media s tendency to report
about negative events such as death undermined American support for the Vietnam War. As casualties
increased, support decreased (Spector). It is also important to note that casualties would logically
increase as the amount of time the war went on increasing. Since the news reported events unfolding
in the war each day, a person would hear about death every day. These daily death reports would not
only be extremely depressing, but they would also have a compound effect as time continued. The
media s reports on death and destruction changed turned America s perception of war into one that
was bleak and hopeless. Many Americans no longer felt they could support the war due to the
disillusionment they

My childhood was filled with adventures of Kansas City, my grandmother was always provoking new
experiences and understanding of the world around us. Naturally, I knew the perfect person to
accompany me along this adventure. The site that was selected for this review was the historic ethnic
neighborhood known as Strawberry Hill. Unfortunately, The Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural

adventure the most amazing event occurred. Saddened by the change in holiday museum hours, my
grandmother and I began walking away, until one of the museum staff members popped out to ask if
we needed any assistance. She was full of wonderful historical insight. There is so much rich history
within this neighborhood, and such a special find in Kansas City. The staff member encouraged us to
further explore the neighborhood, and research the webpage that is chalked full of information of the
history. I will incorporate some photos take on this adventure, while connecting the research I have
conducted with my experience of the site. Strawberry Hill is located off of fourth street near the
riverfront in Kansas City, Kansas. As expected, being located near the river the neighborhood is facing
much of our industrial sector. While standing on the porch of the Museum, looking out highways and

Wuthering Heights Punishment
She was much too fond of Heathcliff. The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep
her separate from him: yet she got chided more than any of us on his account. (42). For Catherine and
Heathcliff, love and punishment will always intertwine. Nelly, the servant, clearly states this
observation to a tee. Their tortured love stretches afar, but would probably not do well under peaceful
circumstances. They seem to thrive on drama. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is a story of
passionate love that encompasses two generations of two families: the Earnshaws and the Lintons.

did not once discuss Cathy or have any hatred towards one another. Heathcliff desperately tries to
push Linton and Cathy together in hopes of a marriage which then gives him the ownership of
Thrushcross Grange. Taking drastic measures, Heathcliff locks Nelly and Cathy in Wuthering Heights

Do Males and Females Communicate with each other in different ways?
I do not give you the right to raise your voice to me because you are woman and I am man
(Tannen p 23) This statement is offensive to both men and women alike. Yet it is a true, telling
statement as well. This one sentence shows us that in many countries, including the U.S., a patriarchal
society creates a hierarchal push and pull between the genders, creating a very large gap in
communication. This assertion also brings up some important questions: Are males and females
merely people with different sexual organs? Or is it how we are raised which makes us communicate
differently? Does mass media attribute to societal inequalities? Or is our culture to blame for ... Show

issue for many women in the workplace. Most companies have
strict sexual harassment policies in effect, yet the abuse of women is still widespread. Based on a 1994

sexual teasing, jokes, remarks, or questions on more than one occasion, 27 times to a mans 10 times.

we are going to eat, and where we are going to get our source of caffeine from to use to start the day.
There are so many choices on where to get that caffeine from, outside coffee shops, an old coffee
maker, french press, and lastly the newest invention, the Keurig machine. The Keurig machine itself
was invented in 1990, with its first machine manufactured in the 2000 s. (Keurig website) It s very
challenging in a modern world like todays, not to be drawn to this neat, and useful device. Looking at
it, it can brew a cup of coffee with just the touch of a button in seconds. There isn t a massive glass jar
like an old fashioned coffee maker would have, instead just enough room for any mug of choice.
There is always a question of, what is a Keurig machine? Well, according to the Keurig website, it is a
beverage, brewing system used for both commercials, and home use. Instead of usual coffee machines
requiring a switch to flip to brew, and a coffee filter, and filling the glass with water, the Keurig allows
a small portion called a K Cup which is used to brew the coffee. The middle aged and adult
populations are highly targeted with this new invention. The ad imposes that our lives can be easier

How Does Crime And Punishment Relate To Salvation
Redemption: Salvation through Suffering
Jesus once stated, The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a
ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). In other words, one must endure suffering in order to achieve
redemption. Like all of us, The Son of Man, Jesus, was put on planet Earth with a purpose of life. His
destiny was not to follow with others, but rather to serve as a trailblazer, and lead a path to salvation.
Along this path, he spread his wisdom and values to his disciples in hopes to exhibit goodness and
purity. Sacrificing his own life proved his immense selflessness, which inspired decades of
generations.

Besides of giving a report, the book opens up and finishes with the Ruddy s insightful reflections.
Ruddy opens up with an examination of the cultural and ecclesiological contexts of the priesthood in

What people expect from us is to be witnesses of living faith that is rooted in prayer and scripture
(52). Ruddy s brings into consideration what Paul VI said in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii
Nuntiandi that: modern man listens to witnesses more than to teachers, and if he does not listen to
teachers, it is because they are witnesses.
One thing that challenges me is that Americans expect from me to be a good preacher. The shortage of
priesthood in the United States has led some communities to be without pastors. Bishops, in trying to
give solution to the problems, have relayed on religious congregations whose members are from other
cultures. If local priest have difficulties in preaching, the seminarians from other cultures will find it
more difficult. One mayor factor is that those missionaries often lack ways to express themselves
because of their limited language. Missionaries from other cultures need to give opinions on the
matter. It is true that we are ministering in the United States and that we need to put all our effort to
share the Word of God with clarity, but people need to see our struggles when dealing in a second
language. I am sure that if we come into dialogue with American people, we, missionaries from other
cultures, can find the support and help to improve our preaching. This is another aspect that
Christopher Ruddy needs to reflect on.

Examples Of Identity Ethics In A Cyborg Manifesto
Identity Ethics in a Cyborg Manifesto A Cyborg Manifesto is a ´blasphemous´ critique of feminism
written by Haraway at a time when unfettered patriarchal capitalism was taking new forms enabled by
emerged technological developments during the 1980s. She warns of scary new networks (Haraway
1990, p.203) that are emerging; new systems of domination that will replace traditional hegemonic
structures of power. She foresees a´´system of world order analogous in its novelty and scope to that
created by industrial capitalism, (Ibid) that will emerge through technological progress. She terms
these new systems ´´the informatics of domination´´(Ibid) However, Haraway offers cause for hope;

The emphasis on identity politics, she argues, reproduces the dualisms and creates fragmented
subjectivities. These maintain the boundaries, creating factional politics as opposed to affinity and

to create unity within feminist movements, transgressing the dualisms that identity politics themselves
create. Haraway writes an imaginative resource suggesting some very fruitful couplings. (Haraway
1990, p.191) The cyborg emerges within her text as both a metaphor for a postmodern identity, but
also a lived reality that is the product of the new technological forms. It embodies an oppositional
consciousness that is exempt from dualisms, capable of confrontation with the new forms of

Examples Of Sentences
Just how do we start that perfect sentence? It can be a tough decision. Sentence beginnings are like
first impressions, and we want to make sure they re right. And while there s no single correct way to
start a sentence, we need to vary them to ensure our writing doesn t get stale or boring.
So, what makes a bad sentence beginning anyway? Are there rules? Well, no, but let s look at some
examples of how repeated simple sentence openings can become stilted and tough to read. For
example:
John went to the store. Anthony went with him. They bought food and drinks. They bought flowers for
John s mother. The man at the cash register smiled at them and gave them a discount. They returned
home and put away the groceries.
What do all these sentence beginnings have in common? As we can see, each one consists of a noun
followed by a verb. Unfortunately, these simple sentences quickly become boring, decreasing the
impact of our writing. Let s see what happens when we vary them a bit. ... Show more content on

Smiling, the man at the cash register gave them a discount. Returning home, the two put the groceries

See how much better this flows? Here, we ve left the simple noun verb structure for the first sentence,
but, in the second, we ve used smiling as a participial or transitional word. And in the third, we ve
emphasized the action of returning home, rather than the two boys.
Let s look at some other ways to rearrange simple sentence beginnings (e.g. common noun verb
constructions) and add some variety to our work. Remember, our goal here is not only to minimize the
use of simple sentence openings it s to become better writers!

  • 3. Varariegated Plants The purpose of this study was to test the production of CO2 in Variegated plants compared to non variegated plants using leaves from the plant Aegopodium Podagraria. The hypothesis states that if the leaf is mostly white, then it will have lower rates of photosynthesis than the leaves with more green coloring. CO2 sensors were utilized in order to measure the production of CO2 of the variegated and non variegated leaves. The data, which was calculated by a two sample t test assuming equal variances, backed the hypothesis. It is concluded that leaves with less variegation will have higher photosynthetic rates than more variegated leaves. The purpose of this study was to test if the white discoloration, which is called variegation, on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is oftentimes used in salad and soups (L. , 2003). Methods: Using the CO2 sensor to measure the rate of CO2 intake and the LabQuest data logger, the ability to photosynthesize among variating leaf colors was tested. Aegopodium Podagraria leaves were collected, three with more than 50 percent white coloring (experimental group) and three with less than 50 percent white coloring (mostly green, control group). Three mostly green leaves were first to be tested with the CO2 sensor and paired with data logger for ten minutes. After this was done, the same procedures were done with the remaining three leaves that are mostly white. This resulted in three different trials, each using three different leaves. The experiment took no longer than 70 minutes to conduct. The independent variable was the variegation of the leaves, while the dependent variable was the GPP. The GPP measures the total amount of energy generated by the leaves in ppm/minute. A two sample t test assuming equal variances was performed on the data to show the results of variation between two sample groups. Results: Figure 1 shows the data that indicated our hypothesis is proven. Variegated leaves are shown to be more photosynthetically inefficient, by producing more CO2 than variegated leaves in the light. This data was produced by a two sample t test assuming equal variances, the test showed non variegated leaves had much higher CO2 levels than the non ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since most aspects of the Habits of Mind as well as the WPA Outcomes are self evident. But if I was to pinpoint them, they would all be written, due to the fact I have not done any multimedia work in other classes this semester. As a result the Rhetorical Knowledge skill transfer was lessened. Except when it comes to the idea of using key rhetorical concepts through analyzing and composing a variety of texts. For my Advanced Criminological Theory class, and essay is written twice a week. So rhetorical concepts are always needing to be used. • 5. Persuasive Essay On Cheating On Homework In Survey I, 91.9% of the participants reported that they have cheated on at least one homework assignment; however, when asked why they receive answers, 13.5% of the participants stated that they do not receive answers (Appendix D). Therefore, it can be concluded that some students believe that cheating on homework assignments is not considered as immoral. This may further explain why students cheat. Furthermore, 91.9% of students reported cheating at least once, albeit 51.4% of students stating that it s bothersome when others cheat (Appendix D). This is due to self serving bias, which is when people blame other individuals when their action negatively affects them, while they blame the situation when their act negatively affects others (Boyes, 2013). For example, if someone gets into a car accident, one automatically assumes that person is a bad driver, while if one gets into a car accident himself, one will find excuses and say it was not their own fault. Similarly, when a student cheats in high school, they find reasons to justify that action, even when they know it is wrong, which is the case with 62.2% of students in this survey (Appendix D). However, when another student cheats in the same class, it is bothersome to some students because they see it as unfair and disrespectful on the student s part. Moreover, 24.3% of students reported that they cheat because they want to help their friends out (Appendix D). Therefore, when they see others, who are not their friend ... • 6. The American Liberal Democratic Values Essay American Liberal Democratic Values I. The definitions of democracy and liberalism Liberalism and democracy are two different concepts, liberalism is a political philosophy which is based on the principle of individual freedom, it calls for guarantees of the rights of the individual, including freedom from arbitrary authority, freedom of religion, the right to own and exchange private property, rights to equal opportunity in health care, education, and employment, and the rights to political participation and representation. While democracy is a set of political procedures involving participation and competition. Most democracies are liberal democracies to some degree. because political participation, competition, and accountability are perhaps the best guarantees that individual freedoms will be preserved, thus the terms liberal and democracy often go hand in hand. In the nineteenth century, the U.S. didn t play an important role in global governance, as the geographical reach of the United States political influence expanded, liberal democracy promotion turned into a major part of U.S. foreign policy, the aim of promoting democracy abroad had been a core element in how the United States exercises its international power. • 7. Production of an Artificial Knee Joint Production of an artificial knee joint begins with investment casting, a process that involves little to no shearing. Investment casting produces products that have good surface quality and high spatial accuracy. It is advantageous for parts with more complex shapes or materials that are difficult to form. This method involves seven steps and results in the preliminary shapes of the femoral and tibial parts. 1. Wax Pattern Production Wax patterns function to shape the cavity within the mold. Though it is called a wax pattern, the pattern may also include materials such as wax, stearic acid, plastic and other industrial chemicals [3]. There are two ways to produce a wax pattern. For both, a wax cylinder is first taken from heat preservation equipment and placed on a hydraulic die casting machine to remove any air or geocerite from the wax. In one process, the wax is then poured into the mold and swirled around until the inner surface is covered with an even coating. This is repeated until an appropriate thickness is reached. The second method is to pressure inject the liquid wax into an aluminum mold. The mold is then turned upside down so the liquid wax is removed and the remaining wax layer is left to cool and harden. 2. Wax Pattern Assembly In order to improve productivity, workers usually assemble multiple patterns on a holder made of wax. They are held together with melted wax, producing a pattern tree so that many wax patterns can be made at once. Patterns with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Golden Age of Sail in Saint John Even as the Golden Age of Sail was coming to a close, Saint John had remained at the top the fourth largest shipbuilding center in the world and one of the greatest in North America. Their affluence took a turn during 1877, when the Great Fire of Saint John devastated the city. It shattered not only the lives of city shipbuilders and merchants, but crippled local citizens as well. Summers in Saint John were typically dry and muggy, though on June 20, 1877 there was an eerie uncharacteristic breeze. Although the cause of the original spark remains unknown, it is believed to have started from McLaughlan Son s boiler shop or from a nearby sawmill. As wood is a naturally rapid burning agent, it led to the quick demise of many wood built city structures. The structures in the Market Square area burnt rapidly destroying over 80 hectares (200 hundred acres) and 1612 structures including eight churches, six banks, fourteen hotels, eleven schooners and four woodboats in just over a nine hour period. It was a period of despair, as men and women were completely drained after dragging bedding, pieces of furniture and other articles through the streets, a vain task in many cases, as the new places of refuge sought out often proved as unsafe as those that were deserted. Several business owners and residents lost everything they had ¬ leaving many Saint John natives with nowhere to go. • 9. Metaphors In August Wilson s Play Fences August Wilson s play Fences utilizes strong metaphors in relaying the deeper meaning of the actual story. The main theme that provides the key to understanding the multiply imagery in this play has to do with how one s past affects their future, importance of family, the American Dream and personal/cultural history. Throughout August Wilson s play Fences , it is clearly shown how much Troy, the father of an African American family, is pulled economically by all of the characters surrounding him. The play is set during the 40 s and 50 s, during this Era African Americans faced considerable obstacles in their everyday lives due to Jim Crow laws and unwritten, racially biased social codes. These laws and behaviors created strictly segregated barriers, and discrimination pervaded most areas of life. Despite the ongoing hardships, the 1940s was a time of creativity, increased economic opportunity and the beginning of the modern civil rights movement. It is as well here where Wilson talks about how during this time, black athletes had become an integrated part of professional and college sports. Most all white teams of the World War II and previous years began to include African Americans by 1947, during the time Jackie Robinson became the first black to play professional baseball since the color line was drawn in the 1890s. Needless to say, the change still didn t bring the same opportunity and equality most African Americans had hoped for. Which is why we tend to see where Troy s angry started, his dream of being in the Major League never came too. First off, many people living in the 1930 s were unemployed and homeless, causing them to live in Hoovervilles. The citizens living in Hoovervilles lived unsanitary lives and often faced hunger. In fact, Hoovervilles were built out of unwanted material and provided little shelter. As if trying to vent her frustrations, 19th century Russia produced a selection of history s finest writers; each writer packing their work with themes of duplicity, hope, and heavy social criticism. Duality was the cardinal theme for Imperial Russia. 19th century Russia was a peasant filled, agrarian empire rushed through the gawky adolescence of industrialisation. However, American citizens no longer saw war with such optimism after witnessing the pessimistic reports that the news chose to televise. In one report, a journalist from CBS Evening News followed American troops as they pillaged and burnt down a village. The news televised graphic images of the burning homes, and the journalist on the scene solemnly listed the peaceful Vietnamese that died in the process. Soon afterward, Americans became outraged (CBSN). At this point, America could no longer view war as something glorious. The United States not only witnessed as their troops cause death but also as their troops met their own ends. According to Spector, the media s tendency to report about negative events such as death undermined American support for the Vietnam War. As casualties increased, support decreased (Spector). It is also important to note that casualties would logically increase as the amount of time the war went on increasing. Since the news reported events unfolding in the war each day, a person would hear about death every day. These daily death reports would not only be extremely depressing, but they would also have a compound effect as time continued. The media s reports on death and destruction changed turned America s perception of war into one that was bleak and hopeless.
