Our company has had to operate informally because we had to act together to get the project done
as a common interest. Informal communication channels are ones that develop outside the formal
structure and do not follow the chain of command. They skip management levels and cut across
lines of authority. In our case, there was no authority, so we naturally cut across those lines. One
type of informal communication our company needs to watch out for is the grapevine. The
grapevine is the unofficial communication system of the informal organization. The is a network of
gossip and rumors that are called employee language. Our company shouldn t have any issues with
the grapevine. Another is management by wandering around. This is the term used to describe
someone within the company literally walking around and talking with people across all line of
authority. This helps to reduce the problems of distortion and inevitably occur with formal
communication. In this sense, our company does utilize management by walking around in a

Essay on Diversity in Higher Education
With the ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868, prohibiting states from passing laws that
deny U.S. citizens from equal protection under the law, the Supreme Court has been obliged to
provide decisions that are color blind (U.S. Const. Amend XIV, В§ 1). However, the Court often
viewed education as a state issue and was reluctant to get involved. That all changed in the 1954
Supreme Court decision known as Brown v. Board of Educationof Topeka, Kansas. In this ruling, it
was decided that, State sanctioned segregation of public schools was a violation of the 14th
Amendment and was therefore constitutional (National Archives, n.d.). It was at this time that the
Supreme Court began to hear more cases regarding racial inequities in... Show more content on

369). In preparation for the decision, the University of Colorado at
Boulder began to look at other criterion, in addition to race, to promote diversity. They decided to
focus on socioeconomic status since this was not protected under the Fourteenth Amendment and it
promotes authentic diversity and equal opportunity (p. 371). They also wanted to be sure to
maintain minority representation should race no longer be a consideration with the passage of
Amendment 46. A study was conducted that evaluated two traits in determining socioeconomic
status. The first was the Overachievement Indices. This evaluated how a student s test scores (e.g.
ACT, SAT) and GPA compared with other students from the same socioeconomic background.
The second was the Disadvantage Index. This evaluated criteria such as native language, family
income level, and school location. Two mathematical equations were developed, in order to create
a standard, by which to measure a student s socioeconomic status, and how this may affect their
success at college. In 2009, the University at Colorado at Boulder conducted an experiment to see
how its class based acceptance policy compared with its race based acceptance policy. They found
that the class based acceptance rate was nine percent higher than considering race alone. Black,
Latino, and Native American applicants were more likely to be admitted under the

Dyeing Studies of Wool Fibers with Madder
In this study, the dyeing behavior of wool fabrics with madder has been studied. Also, the effect of
different mordants (potassium dichromate, stannous chloride, alum, ferrous sulphate, lime, copper
(I, II) sulphate, cobalt chloride, and nickel chloride) as well as three mordanting procedures namely
pre , meta and post mordanting on color characteristics of the dyed samples has been investigated.
The adsorptionisotherm of madder on woolfibers was found to follow Freundlich type of adsorption.
The addition of salt and acid (pH 4.5) to the dyebath resulted in an increase of adsorption. In relation
to mordanting tests, the use of different mordants and mordanting procedures gave various color
characteristics on dyed wool fabrics. The results showed that all the dyed samples, mordanted and
unmordanted, were in the first quadrant of CIEL*a*b* color space. Mordants such as potassium
dichromate, ferrous sulphate and copper (I, II) sulphate led to the darker and lower chromaticity
compared to unmordanted dyed sample while mordants stannous chloride, alum resulted in the
lighter and higher chromaticity values. Mordanting with the chlorides of cobalt and nickel showed
the minimal color difference (∆E) with the unmordanted dyed sample. The fastness properties
indicated that in general wash and light fastness of the mordanted samples were higher than the
unmordanted one.
Key words: wool, madder, mordant, fastness properties, natural dye.

The Effects Of Sports Injuries On Young Athletes
In this day and age, Back to school actually refers to Back to sports . Children become more and
more physically active. They enroll in a variety of sports activities, whether in their own school or
in community based sport programs. As a result of this tremendous life style change in young
people, the number of sports related injuriesin young athletes is escalating nationwide.
Statistics report that sports injuries are the second leading cause of injuries in school. Roughly 60
million children ages 6 to 18 participate in organized sport activites. The number of young athletes
seen in hospital emergency rooms for sports related injuries is approximately 3 million, with
additional 5 million athletes who visit their primary care physician. The American Academy of
Orthopedic Surgeons reports that 3.5 million children are treated for sports injuries each year
roughly half of them suffering from overuse injuries. The organization Safe Kids Worldwide
reports that every 25 seconds a young athlete visits the emergency room due to a severe sports injury
.
With these alarming numbers in mind, an increase in children s safety while playing sports is
inevitable.
While regular physical activities benefit the normal and healthy growth in children, they can be
extremely harmful if the level of activity becomes overly intense or extreme.
Today, children start with competitive sports as early as age 6 or 7. I applaud their discipline and
determination to be healthy and physically

Discovery Of The Nazi Death Camps
Discovery of the Nazi death camps at the end of World War II sent shockwaves throughout the
entire world and brought to question how civilized humans could participate in the atrocity of
what is now known as the Holocaust. Although from the beginning, it was clear Nazi s believed
Jews and other races were inferior to the Aryan race, the idea of genocide was not their original
intent. How then were German soldiers able to exterminate Jews without question? Christopher
Browning in his book Ordinary Men dives into the human psyche to try and recreate the
possibilities in which the German soldier were able to carry out these horrifying acts. Easiest of
Browning possibilities to understand why the Germans were capable of these terrible acts are the
fundamentals of a race war. Initialized by seeing a fellow comrade falling to the onslaught of the
enemy and engulfing them with hate, thus allowing the killing of a certain race without empathy
for their actions. However, how could this mentality be contributed to the Reserve Police Battalions
when they had never encountered combat? Early on in the war [they] felt the need to provide
justification. They were shot, he explained, because they had been encountered without the Jewish
star during roundup... (Browning 16) justification described as that is not from men feeling racial
hate toward the Jews. These men were not completely morally certain of their actions and in order
to justify it in their heads created shaky logic as to

The Blue Green Anesthesia Mask Essay
As I m wheeled through the silver doors into the sterile white operating room, I begin to panic.
This is my first surgery, and I feel as if I am in a living nightmare. Before I can even think about
it, the nurses guide me onto the skinny white operating room bed. A few seconds later, the blue
green anesthesia mask is put on my face, and I feel like I am going underwater with my eyes
closed. Then everything around me goes completely black. I was diagnosed with a rare, non
agressive type of skin cancer on my scalp in 2011. Soon after diagnosis, I underwent an MRI to
see exactly how big the cancer was. Fortunately, it was only the size of a pencil eraser. After
seeing countless doctors, we (my parents and I) finally decided to see a surgeon specializing in
cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. We met with the cancer
surgeon (Dr. Wayne), and he agreed to remove the cancer. We also saw a plastic surgeon (Dr.
Kim) the same day to discuss reconstruction options so that my scalp would look as normal as
possible after the surgery. My surgery is scheduled for the morning of February 8, 2012 at 7 AM;
however, we need to arrive at the hospital at 5:30 to start the preparation process. As we walk
through the Outpatient Surgery unit doors, I immediately notice the amount of chaos surrounding
the unit. You wouldn t know that it was only 5:30 AM with all the noise! There are people

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Research Paper
Creutzfeldt Jakob disease is a prion disease characterized by the degeneration of the cerebral
cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, brainstem and spinal cord. CJD is classified into 4 types:
sporadic, familial, iatrogenic, and contaminated meat. CJD represents approximately 85% of all
human prion diseases . Although it is common in older ages (50 70), both men and women have an
equal chance of acquiring the disease. Recently, there has been a new variant CJD that is thought to
be from the ingestion of cattle products in Great Britain. The central characteristic that
differentiates vCJD and CJD is that it occurs more commonly in younger people and also has
different pathogenic findings. The second variant form is the panencephalopathic form, which is
found in Japan.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Patients with CJD will usually have symptoms of myoclonus, exaggerated startle responses,
seizures, and pyramidal signs . It is known to cause dementia, with cerebellar signs present in
60% of the patients, and ataxia present in 10% of the cases . The disease is often misdiagnosed
as a psychiatric disorder, as patients often have anxiety, depression, or personality change.
Forgetfulness and disorientation eventually lead to dementia. CJD has no flu or fever symptoms.
Although very rare, CJD is very serious and causes approximately 1 case per 1 million population
in a year. CJD has no cure. No difference in diet or animal exposure will increase or decrease the

As for Hamlet, I note in passing the well known fragments of evidence which indicate the existence
of a Hamlet tragedy before the publication of Shakespeare s Second Quarto in 1604.
These are, counting backwards a phrase in Dekker s Satiromastix, 1602, My name s Hamlet:

The Development And Progression Of Amyloid
As scientists, we are always trying to discover the answers to the how and why questions that
comes up as science progresses. We all know that nothing is ever straight forward and sometimes
we end up with more questions than answers from our obtained results but this is not always a
negative. A major area of interest today is the development and progression of amyloid diseases
such as Alzheimer s disease, Huntington s disease, and transmissible bovine spongiform
encephalopathy. Despite extensive studies conducted on each one of these diseases, little is really
known about their development and progression because little is known about the mechanism
behind amyloid fibril formation the common link found in all of these diseases. Over the... Show

Previous studies have shown that different proteins contain short identical sequences in their
secondary structures that have completely different functions and folding mechanisms. It has also
been shown that these same sequences can be induced to form an О± helix, ОІ strand, or ОІ sheet
structure depending on the context. These findings have suggested that chameleon sequences have
a sense of structural plasticity which can pose a problem for protein secondary structure prediction.
While previous research has only focused on the notion of identical sequences within an О± helix
in one protein whereas a different protein has the same identical sequence but instead of an О±
helix, the sequence is within a ОІ strand; Guo et al. delve deeper into the notion that there is also
the possibility of these sequences being found within a ОІ sheet or ОІ hairpin conformation. To
distinguish between the two, Guo et al. introduced the terms chameleon HS and chameleon HE.
Chameleon HS refers to the sequences with helix and strand structures whereas chameleon HE
refers to the sequences with helix and sheet/hairpin structures.
This study used two different data sets, Dataset No.1 and Dataset No.2. Dataset No. 1, used to
search for chameleon sequences, consists of 6962 protein chains generated from the Protein Data
Bank (PDB). Dataset No.

There also may be a loss of balance and coordination resulting in an unsteady gait when attempting
to ambulate.
If there are any signs of a stroke, remember the acronym FAST . Face: does the face droop on one
side when the person is asked to smile? Arms: Is the affected person able to lift their arms? And
if so, does one or both drop downwards more than the other? Speech: When asked to repeat a
phrase, is the speech able to be understood without any slurring, hesitation, or is the person unable
to verbally respond at all? Time: Time is crucial to treatment of a stroke. If any or all of these signs
are present, the person witnessing the event should call 911 immediately (Staff, Stroke, Symptoms
and Causes, 2017).
Pathogenesis of Cerebrovascular Accidents
There are many factors that can lead to the development of a cerebrovascular accident. Factors that
contribute to the development of a stroke are hypertension, dysrhythmias, heart disease, diabetes,
gout, postural hypotension, cardiac hypertrophy, high cholesterol levels, a sedentary lifestyle,
smoking, and a diet high in cholesterol and unhealthy fat (Med help, 2009). The most common
type of CVA is an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes account for 85% of cerebrovascular accidents
(Staff, Stroke, Symptoms and Causes, 2017). There are two types of ischemic strokes, thrombotic
and embolic. A thrombotic stroke is when a blood clot forms in an artery of the brain.

Pearl Harbor Essay
Pearl Harbor
Was the attack of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 really a surprise? How secret is secret in a
country where years of censorship have trained an inquisitive, alert population in the discreet
whisper and the fine art of putting two and two together? And how secret is secret when one s
ideas are no longer exclusively one s own? (At Dawn We Slept, Prange 30) The tragic attack of
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 has many events connected to it that lead people to believe that
it was no surprise to the United States government. The attack marked the entrance of Japan into
World War II on the side of Germany and Italy, and the entrance of the United States on the allied
side. (Microsoft Encyclopedia) President ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The US code word for the resulting intelligence was Magic. The Americans had also made great
progress in penetrating Japan s military codes and ciphers by 1941 (code word Ultra, also used

Sometimes information from one source filled out, clarified, or confirmed interceptions from
another. It is hardly surprising that for some people the question has become, not Did we know?
but How could we not have known? But is that fair? (Van der Vat 94) Since the early 1920 s
America had been eavesdropping on Japanese government communications. Roosevelt s military
leaders called it a spledid arrangement (Stinnett 60) Now if that is true and the United States knew
all about what the Japanese were doing then why wouldn t they have known about the attack on
Pearl Harbor? And not only that, but why would the President of the United States not want to warn
his own country of an attack that would harm his nation and kill thousands? Even though Roosevelt
tried to deny it, the radio taps America had on Japan were flawless. Altogether it was an
exceptional effort of extraordinary scope of achievement, and for years it had kept American
officials aware of every intention and activity of the Japanese government. (Stinnett 60)

Have you ever loved someone but couldn t tell them? Well, that s how a farm boy, named Westley,
felt when he would see his dream girl, Buttercup. Buttercup would see Westley on a normal day to
day basis. All Westley would say when requested to do something was, As you wish . That s not
what he actually meant by that. He actually meant, I loveyou . When Buttercup finally told him,
they started talking and planning marriage. The next day, Westley promised to return after a job he
had been put to, then he left. Days went by, and Buttercup began to worry. She even told him
before he left, I would be devastated if something happens to you. Buttercup soon gave up, and

Voltaire Rationalism
Voltaire was a rebellious and radical thinker, whose sharp wit and pointed satire drew the ire of
critics who say he disrespected the orthodoxy of church and state, and won the respect of a growing
rationalist movement that had emerged out of the public sphere in Europe between the 17th and
18th centuries. Although Voltaire
is known today for being a philosophical powerhouse, whose
writing is the stuff of legend, for most of his life he only wrote plays, poems, and novels. It wasn
t until he was almost forty in 1733 that he published his first major philosophical work, Letters
Concerning the English Nation. This was a series of letters that describe the customs, cultures
and great men of England, and even though his praise for England, a country where all the arts
are honored and rewarded, and where one could think free and nobly without being held back by
any servile fear, may be overblown, they are important nonetheless, because it highlights the virtues
that an Enlightened society should strive for. (114) In many ways these were not so much love
letters to England, as much as they were a call for the rest of Europeto progress in the rationalist
movement that England had set the tone for. Voltaire had suffered many setbacks in life before his
trip to England in spring of 1726 that had shaped his mindset, and made him skeptical to authority.
He was born Francois Marie Arouet to a French aristocratic family in 1694 during the reign of king
Louis XIV. When Voltaire

Cork Industry, the Wine Industry and the Need for Closure...
1 To what extent is the cork industry guilty of complacency and a lack of innovation?
The cork industry is guilty of complacency and lack of innovation because they failed to recognize
the changes in the wine industry. The wine industry was experiencing a revolution where new
producers from Australia, California and Chile had new and different requirements. It took only a
matter of years for the industry to change completely and the cork industry did not jump on the
band wagon when it needed to. It allows the competition to get the edge.
2If consumers love corks, why are the producers not providing what their customers want?

5 What level of R amp;D investment would be required to help the industry diversify and develop
new opportunities for its materials?
According to our text, because the cork forests are facing environmental stress, it would require
high levels of R amp;D investment to open new opportunities for cork materials. When referring
to new opportunities it would be new items, such as, floor and wall coverings, coasters, cork board
sheets, etc. A high level of R amp;D can guarantee some sort of sustainability for the cork industry
and also remove TCA. By doing this, this can ensure growth in the company.
6 What portfolio of R amp;D projects would you establish for the cork industry?
I would try to find different things to use the cork rather than focusing on just wines. Expand in
other areas to increase production and focus and emphasis on how it is environmentally friendly.

7 What role have the wine buyers (end users and others in the supply chain) played in contributing
to the fall in demand for cork as a closure?
Since we live in a fast pace life consumers tend to want thing immediately and do not want to wait
for things such as delivery time and like to purchase items in bulk and have a variety of items to
choose from. As a result supermarkets meet the demands by stocking up with large quantities and

Hippocratic Oath And The Engineering Code Of Ethics
Compare and Contrast: Hippocratic Oath and the Engineering Code of Ethics The Hippocratic
Oath and Engineering code of ethics have both been regarded as the standard for medical and
engineering professionals to conduct themselves morally, and professionally to assure that the
decisions and activities made are guided by certain principles and values. (Hendon and French,
2016) Both the Hippocratic Oath and Engineering code of ethics emphasize the importance of the
duties and responsibilities of professionals in regards to the safety and health of humans, providing
services within areas of expertise, being truthful, hold confidential information, and being
accountable for professional services provided. The Hippocratic Oath states and emphasizes from
the latin primum non nocere, or do no harm towards patients.(Tyson, 2001) The oath is a statement
that all medical practitioners quote that they will provide, contribute, and comply with the safety
systems in place to protect and reduce the risk posed by adverse health situations. The oath also
requires the practicing medical physician to protect the lives of the majority, by means of disease

The Role Of Eors In Plato s Symposium
In Plato s Symposium, the great radical thinkers of Greece gather around and talk about passion
and Eros before their participating in their own mischievous acts themselves. Phaedrus great speech

The speech of Phaedrus is saying that the God of love is great. For the God is held in honor as
eldest among them, said he. An indication that Eros has no parents, nor does anyone, layman, or
poet, claim he does (118).The God of Eros is so great and omnipotent that he did not need any
parents to conceive him, he produced himself unto the thought process of the mankind himself.

say how the beloved affects the man s thinking when he does shameful acts. I then say that a
man in love, if discovered doing something shameful, or suffering it from another and failing
cowardice to defend himself, would not be pained so pained at being seen by his father or

The Power Struggle Between Robespierre And Danton
When I first read about this course in a summer email, I was blown away by the description and
content of the reacting class. It seemed like more of a fun game that a few good friends might
play rather than an honors history course. Over the past few months, I have seen that this course
is a combination of game and class, which, in turn, makes learning fun. This is the reason that I
have learned much about history and perhaps even more about myself during this course. I
could say that I learned about the influence and tactics of Thomas Cromwell or say I saw
firsthand the power struggle between Robespierre and Danton. I could say I learned about the
ideas of Rousseau, Burke, Diderot, More, Marsilius, Machiavelli, and, of course, Baldassare
Castiglione. I could say I learned about the crowd, the National Assembly, the courts of Henry VIII
and the Parliament of England. It would be easy to simply say that I learned the basic history of the
English Reformationand the French Revolutionbecause that is the simplest learning accomplished
during this course. However, aside from the rudimentary knowledge of the two events, I saw and
learned from two specific trends exhibited in each of our games: the formation and churning of
factions and the variability and unpredictability of chance. Factions quickly appeared in both of our
games: the Boleyn s versus the Aragonese for the English game and the three parties of the

The Managers at C3 would also have excellent contacts allowing possibilities for international

(2) Competition With Managers from C3 Presents at the helm of BDO the event can now excel
in getting big name headliners at better prices and also reduce the risks of being out bid by other
festivals such as Soundwave and Future Music. This is because of C3 s buying power and
contacts. C3 can use past contacts from Lollapalooza to invite headline shows from their American
festival to also tour as part of BDO. Almost every main headliner that has played BDO in the past
has played at Lollapalooza and contract deals could be made where some headliners get paid to
play both festivals, also knowing C3 s reputation acts could be inclined to take lower offers to play
the event due to exposure and the chance to be asked to play at Lollapalooza after BDO.

Historical View of Financial Markets and Financial Institutions
Economics of Money and Banking
Professor E. Todd
February 16, 2012
Many issues have changed within financial markets and institutions. Many years ago, even BC,
there were banking institutions available. Transactions were very informal in the early years to
extremely formal in the present day. Financial Markets and Institutions have progressed
considerably in the last 50 years. More opportunities of different types have evolved and are
available for us to become involved in. Opportunities to invest, save and acquire loans have
progressed considerably in financial markets and institutions.
What are financial institutions?

Many individuals depend on the sound functioning of our banking system in order to pay bills,
save, invest, and provide for their future. When banks are unable to fulfill their duties to the
economy due to over speculation or poor risk assessment, it is the role of the regulators to step in
and right the ship.
Once technology was introduced to the banking world many things changed. Banking and any
transactions related to banking had to be done in person. Along came the telephone, in which
allowed banking to be conducted at home or work. A phone call is what it took to have
transaction implemented. The age of ATM s (Automatic Teller Machines) allowed banking 24
hours a day. Debit cards and Credit cards allowed us to transfer monies or put things on credit
instantly. Next came the era of online banking and electronic transfers of money, which allows us
to take care of many other transactions instantly. From the 1st day until today the every changing
world of banking changes the way we live and we do business.
Credit unions go back to 1852 in Germany. A credit union is mutual owned by the people who
deposit money into the credit union. Credit unions offer saving, loans, or credit and other financial
services. The credit union will use its own money deposited in the bank to lend out to members.

Voting Rights Act Pros And Cons
I have come to a realization that the United States of America has taken a huge step back into
history. Instead of learning from our past and growing we have elected a President that only brings
racist remarks symbolizing everything that the United States does not identify as. Due to the
election it has brought us much awareness of how ignorant the people who were elected into
office to be the people s voice. We have accomplished many things as a society, but still render the
key elements to take the blindfold of the ignorance that hovers around people. The Voting Rights act
has been dismantled and sadly, we are returning to our racists background, or maybe we just never
acknowledged them until we elected a blatant racist president. The VotingRight s act represents a
huge faze in our History of how we transformed into a more welcoming society for all people no...

Voting I.D laws was a suggestion to prevent voting fraud which was assessed to having 1 to 2

there have only been 1 to 2 cases of fraud which does not call for an extreme tactic of presenting

Assembly Line Olympics of History
Assembly Line Olympics of History Assembly lines are a big part of manufacturing in almost
every country in the world. Some work better than others, so an analytical breakdown would be
required to be able to tell which factories and countries are more effective than others, and what
they do to get that way. The function of organized work and division of labor has been around
since ancient times. On the timeline of organized work, the closer one gets to modern day, the
more organized labor becomes, and the more labor gets divided. It started with the three basic
job groups, food, child care, and shelter (Kranzberg, 1). Then, in places such as Greece, Rome,
Egypt, and Mesopotamia, labor was divided up by social classes. The rulers and nobility were
the ones overseeing the work and directing the economy, (Hannan, 2), while the priests held
knowledge of writing, reading, math, and the more scholarly subjects. Next down the line were
clerks and scribes, (Kranzberg, 2), and then merchants and traders underneath them who bought
and sold goods. Then there were peasants, slaves, and lastly prisoners of war who were forced to
work. We can see some similarities of this ancient hierarchy in modern day. The social/working
pecking order of ancient times hasn t faded. We have the government officials, the politicians, the
doctors lawyers, the modern merchants and salesmen, the working class, and even convicts who
work to earn credit or are even forced to work.

Gothic Literature Assignment
Gothic Literature Writing Assignment Gothic Literature can be defined as writing that includes a
horrifying atmosphere, petrifying characters, and an unimaginable conflict. Many of Edgar Allan
Poe s stories can meet this criteria, but one can fit it the best. This would be The Black Cat. This is
primarily because of the creepy underground environment, the evil antagonist within the
protagonist, and the conflict of the story. First, the setting of the character can very much be shown
as a part of gothic literature requirements. In the beginning, the story explains how after the
narrator had done a reprehensible act by harming and later killing the innocent cat he loved so
dearly, his house was caught in flames, and he lost all of his wealth. The... Show more content on

The character was awaken to poverty. His entire life was sucked down the drain and he then lived
in an underground shelter , later quoted, the cellar of the old building which our poverty
compelled us to inhabit (Cat 23). The building adds a more mysterious sensation for the reader to
consume. Although stories like The Murder of Rue Morgue can have a creepier environment, the
story The Black Cat, can fit the criteria for the setting requirements in gothic literature. This is
because the environment is known for being more eerie than the others. For example, The Masque
of the Red Death is set in an isolated alley and gives an off feeling, but The Black Cat is a more
modern way of a creepier setting. The abandoned building can affect more modern stories, because
they are the places where murders or other gruesome events typically occur. Next, in most gothic
literature novels, the main character, whether that be the protagonist or antagonist, are usually
thought as sinister or menacing. These few stipulations can undoubtedly be classified in the story
The Black Cat, because the character undergoes many evil things within himself. In the beginning,
the character is telling the reader that he is not in face crazy, and

Odyssey Research Paper
Before the Odyssey is explained, there is much historical information about Ancient Greece to
cover. To begin, the time period that Odyssey is a part of is known as Homeric society. Homeric
society is a concoction of diverging assortments in various points in history. Because the setting is
a combination of different times from several coteries, the story includes many ideas and values
particular to each one. In the 8th century BC, the Mediterranean saw a growth in population after
the dark age, thus leading to the menagerie that the Ancient Greeks partook in. Moving forward,
there is much evidence that suggests that epics were created between 750 and 650 B.C.E. These
stories were set in Mycenaean Greece around the 12th century B.C.E, also known as the Bronze

the lifestyle of those in the great kingdom of the Bronze Age. The Greeks are more often called
Achaeans which is was the name of a tribe that lived in Greece during the Bronze Age (SparkNotes

of their gods and goddesses ( Gods and Festivals 1). Multitudes of competition a pivotal
component in Greece s history also involved music, dramas and athletics( Gods and Festivals 1).
For example, The Olympic Games is Ancient Greece s most well known event. They held The

Orpheus And Eurydice In Boethius The Consolation Of...
In Boethius The Consolation of Philosophy, he provides in the twelfth poem of his third book, a
summary of the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. He utilizes the tale to showcase a parallel
between their tragic love and the Christian s relationship with God.
Orpheus yearning for his deceased wife is similar to the strong belief a Christian has for God.
Considering Boethius, and others of his time, viewed God as the embodiment of goodness, the
beginning lines of his poem, Happy, the one who can see/ the clear source of good,/ happy, the
one who can release/ the chains of heavy earth can represent a Christian (Boethius lines 1 4). The
person who is happy is the believer because they can see the source of good which indicate God.
Similarly, the release from earth also implies the necessity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although it is Hades who challenges Orpheus, it can be argued Eurydice sends her lover to hell for
his failure. As stated in the poem, he looked, lost, fell (line 51). He loses Eurydice because he
fails to trust in the person who is behind him and disobeys the order given to him. The moral
message and final line given in this poem is essentially a rewording of the previously cited line,
one loses when one sees the lower worlds (line 58). Yet, there does exist a small difference
between the two lines, in which the final message claims seeing the lower worlds suggest failure.
This line would suggest seeing Eurydice therefore equates to seeing the lower worlds or, in other
words, Hell. Moreover, the reason why Orpheus fails is because of his growing distrust. His
inability to believe Eurydice is behind him parallels the idea of a believer doubting in their God.
Sinners or those who go against God are punished, and to teach Christians, Boethius demonstrates
Orpheus punishment for disobeying the action required of

However, one way you can combat this potential negative is to have the door regularly maintained
by a professional door serviceman.
Roller Garage Doors
A roller garage door is made up on one complete panel. When it rolls open, it rolls around itself
until the door is fully open. Because the door is a single piece that rolls, the amount of design
options for it are a lot less than a sectional door. However, this design limitation does mean you
can pick up an inexpensive roller garage door since it is not filled with fancy window inserts or
other advance panelling design.
Just like a sectional door, a roller garage door offers considerable security because the track is
safely tucked inside the garage. The main negative about a roller door is that there needs to be
sufficient space between the top of the garage door opening and the garage ceiling for the door to
be able to roll up into itself as the door opens.
While the final choice comes down to the type of door design you want for your home, be sure that
the installation of whichever door you choose is done by a professional installer. Installing the
guide tracks for either door can be a tricky task, so it is best left to those who have plenty of

Social Class From The Perspectives Of People Of Color,...
Social Class in America
America is divided into groups based on many different characteristics. Some of those
characteristics may include race and ethnicity, cultures, religions, age, sexual orientations and
genders. No matter which group someone defines with based on those characteristics, an individual
will be labeled one step further to fit into a social class. In America, the most basic structure of
social classes is broken down into upper, middle, and lower class. However, the perspectives of
what each of those social structures looks like differs based on an individual s characteristics.
This analysis will examine the structures of the American social class from the perspectives of
people of color, women, and gender orientation. Individuals who represent the upper social class
are privileged to more opportunities than those individuals who are categorized in the middle or
lower social classes. The upper social class consists of a surplus of money which in turn leads to
many positive repercussions. Being categorized as wealthy contributes to having better health
care, having greater education opportunities, and never having to worry about where one will
sleep at night or eat throughout the day. Historically, the upper social class in American society
has always consisted of mainly White individuals. According to Brannon and Markus (2013) race

time during World War 1.
Life for a soldier in the trenches in WW1 as described in actual letters and as described as in the
book sounded very alike. In the book it talks about the human eating rats, trench foot and leaving
the dead bodies lying on the ground just for something dry to walk on. Killing each separate
louse is a tedious business when a man has hundreds. The little beasts are hard and the
everlasting cracking with one s fingernails very soon becomes wearisome. (Remarque, 1929, p.
75) This is an example in the book that can be connected to real life is when Paul and all the
other men are sitting around the fire picking lice out and burning them in a tin. Since then we
have learned better than to be shy about such trifling immodesties. (Remarque, 1929 p. 8) In that
sentence Paul is discussing the toilets, or latrines, saying how when he first started using the
them they were nasty and it was embarrassing, but now he s comfortable with using them. I
cannot bear to look at his hands, they are like wax. Under the nails is the dirt of the trenches, it
shows through blue black like poison. (Remarque, 1929, p. 15) Paul describes the trench mud as
poison, because it is. It caused men to lose limbs, feet and sometimes their lives because it
caused gangrene. The rats here are particularly repulsive they are so fat the kind we call corpse
rats. (Remarque, 1929, p. 102) The trenches could be very muddy and smelly. There were many
dead bodies buried nearby and the latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches.
Millions of rats infested the trenches and some grew as big as cats. There was also a big problem
with lice that tormented the soldiers on a daily basis. (Heirs, 2014). In the article it

Smoking Banning Public Areas Yield Positive Effects For All
Smoking Bans in Public Areas Yield Positive Effects For All
One of the major reasons for death and preventable diseases is tobacco use. Just in the United
States of America, smoking has found to be the cause of over 40,000 deaths due to heart disease
and over 200,000 episodes of childhood asthma per year (Naiman et al 1). Some of these cases
could be specifically linked to secondhand smoke, defined as an involuntary exposure to a
combination of diluted cigarette side stream smoke and the exhaled smoke from smokers (Naiman
et al 1). Greenwald found that by 2015, 36 states and 4,177 municipalities in the USA had enacted
law that restricted where smoking was allowed (101). Smoking in public places should not be
allowed because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While at the same rate smokers who supported bans also reported having attempted to quit in the
last twelve months than those who did not support any of the laws. The implication here is that if
one is trying to quit smoking, attending bars, restaurants, or other public areas that are smoke free
have a positive effect on quitting by reducing exposure to the smell and other smokers which can
increase the urge to smoke when trying to quit. However, certain studies have argued the opposite
effect. Greenwald research found that, smokers generally appeared to visit bars more often, stay at
bars longer, and consume more drinks than their non smoking counterparts (103). At the same
token this benefits non smokers who also attend such venues because they are not exposed to
secondhand smoke. Here we see that smoke bans are a win win for those affected by smoking
directly and indirectly.
As a second point, to explore the benefits of smoking bans and the links to lower hospitalizations
for heart attacks and lung disease. Vander Weg and her team recognized that, exposure to
secondhand smoke is recognized as an important contributor to premature morbidity and mortality
(2699). Among adults, secondhand smoke increases the risk for heart and lung disease while also
highlighting possible causation for other respiratory health issues such as adult onset asthma and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study investigated the association

Symptoms And Treatment Of Cancer Patients
1.Introduction:
The numbers of people who are dying due to crucial diseases such as cancer have increased,
according to world health organization (WHO) cited in Jane et al (2008), in
2005, 7.6 million people died from cancer, a figure expected to increase to 9 million people by
2015 , and increasing further to 11.4 million dying in 2030. Therefore, scientists have attempted to
find appropriate solution for those problems. Since the nineteenth century, solutions have been
introduced by scientists, that use radiation for the diagnosis of diseases instead of surgery (Pope,
1999), which has led to great
advances in medicine because diagnostic technology such as CT and X rays scanning, nuclear

2.1.1 Charged particle: This type interacts directly with matter, which can be

Beta particle:Most radioactive nucleuses are not stable. Therefore, they start
emitting radiation to be stable, Beta particle is of the type radiation (Graham et al,2012).
This is emitted by radioactive nucleus, the atomic mass number of radioactive nucleus
decreases by one .On the other hand ,atomic number remain the same. It can be seen
from the equation:

Thus, z= is atomic mass number of radioactive nucleus
A= Atomic number
X= is radioactive nucleus before emitting
Y= Radioactive nucleus after emitting

Risk Analysis. A Risk Analysis Was Prepared As Part Of
Risk Analysis
A risk analysis was prepared as part of the review of Ford as a potential investment opportunity.
The Capital Asset Pricing Model defines the relevant risk of an individual stock as the amount of
risk that the stock contributes to the market portfolio (Brigham Ehrhardt, 2014, p. 250). The risk of
a stock can be measured by its beta. The higher the beta of a stock, the higher the risk. Stocks
with a beta below one are less volatile than the market while stocks with a beta of greater than one
are more volatile than the market. Well diversified portfolios include a stocks with both high and
low betas (Brigham Ehrhardt, 2014, p. 250).
According to Yahoo Finance, Ford s beta as of December 3, 2016 is 1.22 (Yahoo Finance ... Show

Rather, a subscription type model may be the future. Customer would sign up for a subscription
service offered by companies like Uber or Lyft rather than owning or leasing their own vehicle.
This has the potential to dramatically decrease the total number of vehicles needed in the United
States and across the world. The business model for the automobile industry is much more
profitable at high sales volumes. If those volumes decrease dramatically, as they did with the
economic disruption in 2007, there is the potential that some automobile manufactures will not
survive (Ferraras, 2014).
Recommendation
A thorough analysis of Ford, including economic, financial, and risk factors has been completed
by the financial investment team. This analysis was then reviewed to determine if Ford would be
an ideal addition to the client s investment portfolio. As stated earlier, the team is looking to add a
large domestic value stock with a low risk. After considering all available data and key factors, the
team does not recommend an investment in Ford at this time.
Ford has a strong brand and appears to be a well run business. The company has a stellar
reputation and compares favorably to its competitors when analyzing the key financial ratios. Ford
has been in business for over 100 years, surviving multiple world wars and severe economic
downturns. If the team was picking the best automobile company to invest in, Ford would be near

The Black Power Movement Of African Americans
Social Movement Today, there are many movements that are going on due to unfair ways of
oppression. Oppression can be defined as tyranny by a ruling group to the injustice some suffer
due to everyday practices of a society (CampГіn and Carter 2015: 497). I chose to write about the
Black Power Movement because of the recent cases of oppression that have been occurring in the
United Statesof America. Oppression can happen to people of all races, ethnicities, and sexual
orientations. The black power movement cannot be placed into a box of confinement, it much more
that one movement. Since the 1960s there have been many things like small protests and
movements that have contributed to the black power movement over time. There have been... Show

Black power was said to have echoed throughout American as a cry for liberation, pride of culture,
and radical solidarity. There has always been a constant struggle for economic equality. Many
people saw the movement as an angry outcry due to little progress that had been made to achieving
civil rights. Also, the article stated that instead of helping the civil rights movement, it corrupted
the younger generation of Black activist and it reinforced segregation. It was also said to be the
civil rights movement s evil twin. Black people did not have a voice that they could speak out
about injustice. The oppression of Black people was very common in the southern states. Black
people were not the dominant group of people. White people were the dominant group and Black
people were the subordinate group. Black people had to do what they were told by the White
people, for they were in total control of how society functioned. Lynching of Black people, police
brutality and unpredictable danger occurred just because the color of their skin, anyone of color
was not safe at all during those times. The civil rights movement was going on around the same
time that the black power movement started. The civil rights movement had a more peaceful
approach. Both of the movements pushed for equality and to end oppression but the black power
movement, moved beyond the south. In the article, Carmicheal said, It is a call for black people to

Deception in The Tempest Essay
The passage below is found in the opening act of one of Shakespeare s most illusive plays of
control and manipulation. The word deception is defined as the act of misleading or to trick, cheat,
lie, and mislead . From this definition, it is obvious that deception is normally perceived to be evil
and results in the harm of others mentally and physically. It leads to broken hearts, untold truths, or
even unpunished murder. However, in Shakespeare s The Tempest, deception is used as a virtuous
art to manipulate an unjust situation and rectify it.

Although, the normally evil deception is used, Prospero uses it in such a way so that no harm is
brought to anyone, and all the characters are brought to their rightful positions by the play s
conclusion. Through his own works he changes the minds of his enemies (Tillyard 120). All of
the action develops in a world which defies nature, so the events are more believable . The island
is not only uncharted, it is one on which anything can happen (Knox 128). In the words of Gonzalo:
All torment, trouble, wonder, and amazement Inhabits here. Some heavenly power guide us Out of
this fearful country! (Shakespeare 78)
Miranda had been bred up in the island with her father and a monster only: she did not know, as
others do, what sort of creatures were in a ship (Coleridge 109). In fact, Miranda knew basically
nothing about her past or her identity until the start of the play. Her father has, in a way, been
deceiving her throughout her entire life. Even throughout the course of the play, Prospero is not
completely open with his daughter. Instead, he puts her to sleep for a period of time so that she
does not interfere with his plan. Through this deception her father was not trying to harm her in any
way but rather to protect her from the vicious truth.
The characters which were on the ship are now separated into various groups and spread apart
from one another across the island. The first group Prospero

Examples Of Lexical Cohesion
This paper tackles how cohesion can be effective to make the text more united. Both cohesive
devices; lexical and grammatical, have a powerful role in giving the text texture. Lexical devices are
repetition, antonyms, synonyms, and general words. On the other hand, grammatical devices are
reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. Both of them provide the text harmony and meaning.
Lexical Cohesion Lexical cohesion occurs when two words are semantically related to each other
such as, repetition, synonyms, antonyms, general words, and superordinate. Firstly, repetition
occurs when one word is mentioned more than one time throughout the text. To illustrate, the word
and is repeated about 22 times in the text , the word her is repeated around 15 times in paragraphs
number 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13, the morpheme mother is repeated 5 times in paragraphs number 1,
8, and 14, the pronoun I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secondly, conjunctions link between clauses and sentences. They signal the way the writer wants
the reader to relate the sentence to what have been said or what is going to be said throughout the
text. Conjunctions have many types such as, additive, causal, adversative, and temporal. Additive
conjunctions, also in paragraph number 6, or in paragraph number 3, and in paragraphs number 4, 7,
10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, are used when the writer wants to add more information to his idea. Causal
conjunctions like, in order to in paragraph number 7, so in paragraph number 8, 9, and 14, and
because in paragraph number 14, are used to tell a reason or a result. Adversative conjunctions like,
but in paragraph 8, and although in paragraph number 11, are used to confirm opposite ideas.
Temporal conjunction like, since in paragraph number 9, is used to confirm

The Other Wes Moore Outlier Analysis
In an interview, Malcolm Gladwell once said, Outliers makes us understand how much of a group
project success is. When outliers become outliers, it is not just because of their own efforts. It s
because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances. Wes
Moore is one of the many great examples of a Gladwellian outlier, as evinced by his upbringing,
extraordinary success, and the rare opportunities he received. From growing up in a broken
neighborhood to almost dropping out of school, it seemed as if the author of The Other Wes
Moore would follow the same dark path as his criminal counterpart with the same name... but he
did not. Wes Moore went on to become a successful graduate of John Hopkins... Show more content

His extraordinary successes and achievements place him in a category many can only aspire to be
an outlier of society.
One s childhood has a lasting impact on their entire life. Moore s upbringing and the loving
family he was born into, no matter how trivial it may seem, greatly contributed to his success.
Wes seemingly grew up the same as any other kid in the Bronx in a single parent household,
surrounded by bad influences... what separated him from the crowd? His support system: his
family, and their ultimate support and sacrifices made all the difference. As a teenager, Wes
seemed to be going down the wrong path. He constantly skipped school, his academic failures
were overwhelming, and he was even arrested for vandalism. In the case of the other Wes, his
family simply let these actions slide, and decision after decision ultimately landed him with a life
sentence in prison. The author Wes s mother, however, refused to allow this behavior to continue.
As a method of intervention, she forced Moore to attend Valley Forge, and in doing so, probably
saved his career. The extent of his family s sacrifice was evident on page 95 when Wes realized
that my grandparents took the money they had in the home in the Bronx, decades of savings and
mortgage payments, and gave it to my mother

A new chain could provide McDonalds with some competition, but with McDonalds place in the
market we believe the chances of that occurring are low. Supplier power will remain the same
(1.5) as new suppliers and cheaper methods of supply are likely over the next few years. The
buyer power will also remain low (1.5) as we do not foresee any changes in McDonalds already
cheap prices. We do believe the threat of substitutes will rise (4.5). There is heavy pressure on
healthy foods and we only believe that will rise. Healthy options will be advertised more and
people will continue to push healthier eating. The rivalry of the industry will remain high (4.5).
This will rise as the threat of new companies and new companies trying to be healthier than the
competition. McDonalds is everywhere, and will remain so over the next few years, pushing its
overall advantages even higher. The ROIC is used to assess McDonalds efficiency at allocating
the capital under their control to profitable investments. Additionally we can examine the ROIC
to see how McDonalds is doing compared to the industry. Over the companies past fiscal year,
McDonalds had an ROIC of 21.49% and a WACC of 6.51%. We can compare this to the industry
average ROIC of 22.59% and the industry average WACC of 7.49%. In briefly comparing both
spreads it does not show McDonald s having a competitive advantage in the industry, as the spreads

The Truman Show By Peter Weir
For centuries, man has dreamt of constructing pristine simulated worlds , existing in a separate
sphere from our imperfect reality. From the town of Pullman, a company town south of Chicago to
Disney World, attempts to force Utopia have failed, falling prey to the complications of people s
personal desires. The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, tells us the story of The Truman Show,
an elaborate reality show built around the control of one man s life. Christof, the director, has
created an entire living city for Truman, the star of his show, and the only one not in on this whole
elaborate fakery. Essentially, Truman is living his life in the simulation of a flawless, archetypal
American town, for the entertainment of millions of viewers around the world. Christof, along with
countless others obsessed with the idea of controlling part of the world to fit their visions of an
ideal reality, have deluded themselves into thinking fictional utopias can exist apart from the
undeniable constraints of reality. Their fundamental flaw lies in relying on the assumptions of
psychological behaviorism, and the belief that they could perfectly condition the behaviorof the
inhabitants follow the goals of the community.
In order for Christof s scheme to work, Truman must be unaware that he s living in a simulation,
and be satisfied with the simulated life that s presented to him. As much as possible, Christof and
his crew try to control every element of Truman s life. A massive dome is

Racial Profiling and Male African Americans
What comes to your mind when you think of an interaction an authoritative figure (police, teacher,
principal)? In the African Americancommunity it is usually fear and anxiety of the motive of the
authoritative figure, especially if you are a male. The intersection of race and gender for the African
American male provides a basis for premature judgment by many authoritative figures in their lives.

Now consider the number of innocents that never get this chance at redemption. Currently the
Federal Bureau of Investigation is collecting racial and ethnic information and mapping American
communities based on crude stereotypes about which groups commit different types of crime and
sharing it with unknown state, local and federal agencies (American Civil Liberties Union,
2012). Since 9/11 the operating parameters Americans expect to protect their rights to privacy
have been obliterated. The FBI can now initiate an investigation of a person without the standards
of just cause that once protected the rights of all Americans. To the African American male this
is nothing new, random searches and undue investigations have always been a part of being an
AAM. From a police prospective there are ongoing efforts to equalize the authorities governing
the communities focused on diversifying the system and gaining trust amongst the inhabitants.
Jones Brown (2001) argues that to be black and male amounts to a fatal profile for which there
has been little to no judicial redress. She cites Natapoff (2004) in noting that one in four black
males 20 29 years of age is locked up, on probation or parole, or being pressured to snitch. The
research goes further to say that one in twelve in high crime areas are snitching under duress
causing a social breakdown of communities nationwide.

Our company has had to operate informally because we had to act together to get the project done as a common interest. Informal communication channels are ones that develop outside the formal structure and do not follow the chain of command. They skip management levels and cut across lines of authority. In our case, there was no authority, so we naturally cut across those lines. One type of informal communication our company needs to watch out for is the grapevine. The grapevine is the unofficial communication system of the informal organization. The is a network of gossip and rumors that are called employee language. Our company shouldn t have any issues with the grapevine. Another is management by wandering around. This is the term used to describe someone within the company literally walking around and talking with people across all line of authority. • 4. Essay on Diversity in Higher Education With the ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868, prohibiting states from passing laws that deny U.S. citizens from equal protection under the law, the Supreme Court has been obliged to provide decisions that are color blind (U.S. Const. Amend XIV, В§ 1). However, the Court often viewed education as a state issue and was reluctant to get involved. That all changed in the 1954 Supreme Court decision known as Brown v. Board of Educationof Topeka, Kansas. In this ruling, it was decided that, State sanctioned segregation of public schools was a violation of the 14th Amendment and was therefore constitutional (National Archives, n.d.). It was at this time that the Supreme Court began to hear more cases regarding racial inequities in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 369). In preparation for the decision, the University of Colorado at Boulder began to look at other criterion, in addition to race, to promote diversity. They decided to focus on socioeconomic status since this was not protected under the Fourteenth Amendment and it promotes authentic diversity and equal opportunity (p. 371). They also wanted to be sure to maintain minority representation should race no longer be a consideration with the passage of Amendment 46. A study was conducted that evaluated two traits in determining socioeconomic status. The first was the Overachievement Indices. This evaluated how a student s test scores (e.g. ACT, SAT) and GPA compared with other students from the same socioeconomic background. The second was the Disadvantage Index. This evaluated criteria such as native language, family income level, and school location. Two mathematical equations were developed, in order to create a standard, by which to measure a student s socioeconomic status, and how this may affect their success at college. In 2009, the University at Colorado at Boulder conducted an experiment to see how its class based acceptance policy compared with its race based acceptance policy. They found that the class based acceptance rate was nine percent higher than considering race alone. Black, Latino, and Native American applicants were more likely to be admitted under the ... • 5. Dyeing Studies of Wool Fibers with Madder In this study, the dyeing behavior of wool fabrics with madder has been studied. Also, the effect of different mordants (potassium dichromate, stannous chloride, alum, ferrous sulphate, lime, copper (I, II) sulphate, cobalt chloride, and nickel chloride) as well as three mordanting procedures namely pre , meta and post mordanting on color characteristics of the dyed samples has been investigated. The adsorptionisotherm of madder on woolfibers was found to follow Freundlich type of adsorption. The addition of salt and acid (pH 4.5) to the dyebath resulted in an increase of adsorption. In relation to mordanting tests, the use of different mordants and mordanting procedures gave various color characteristics on dyed wool fabrics. The results showed that all the dyed samples, mordanted and unmordanted, were in the first quadrant of CIEL*a*b* color space. Mordants such as potassium dichromate, ferrous sulphate and copper (I, II) sulphate led to the darker and lower chromaticity compared to unmordanted dyed sample while mordants stannous chloride, alum resulted in the lighter and higher chromaticity values. Mordanting with the chlorides of cobalt and nickel showed the minimal color difference (∆E) with the unmordanted dyed sample. The fastness properties indicated that in general wash and light fastness of the mordanted samples were higher than the unmordanted one. Key words: wool, madder, mordant, fastness properties, natural dye. Introduction: The use of natural dyes for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Effects Of Sports Injuries On Young Athletes In this day and age, Back to school actually refers to Back to sports . Children become more and more physically active. They enroll in a variety of sports activities, whether in their own school or in community based sport programs. As a result of this tremendous life style change in young people, the number of sports related injuriesin young athletes is escalating nationwide. Statistics report that sports injuries are the second leading cause of injuries in school. Roughly 60 million children ages 6 to 18 participate in organized sport activites. The number of young athletes seen in hospital emergency rooms for sports related injuries is approximately 3 million, with additional 5 million athletes who visit their primary care physician. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons reports that 3.5 million children are treated for sports injuries each year roughly half of them suffering from overuse injuries. The organization Safe Kids Worldwide reports that every 25 seconds a young athlete visits the emergency room due to a severe sports injury . With these alarming numbers in mind, an increase in children s safety while playing sports is inevitable. While regular physical activities benefit the normal and healthy growth in children, they can be extremely harmful if the level of activity becomes overly intense or extreme. Today, children start with competitive sports as early as age 6 or 7. I applaud their discipline and determination to be healthy and physically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Discovery Of The Nazi Death Camps Discovery of the Nazi death camps at the end of World War II sent shockwaves throughout the entire world and brought to question how civilized humans could participate in the atrocity of what is now known as the Holocaust. Although from the beginning, it was clear Nazi s believed Jews and other races were inferior to the Aryan race, the idea of genocide was not their original intent. How then were German soldiers able to exterminate Jews without question? Christopher Browning in his book Ordinary Men dives into the human psyche to try and recreate the possibilities in which the German soldier were able to carry out these horrifying acts. Easiest of Browning possibilities to understand why the Germans were capable of these terrible acts are the fundamentals of a race war. Initialized by seeing a fellow comrade falling to the onslaught of the enemy and engulfing them with hate, thus allowing the killing of a certain race without empathy for their actions. However, how could this mentality be contributed to the Reserve Police Battalions when they had never encountered combat? Early on in the war [they] felt the need to provide justification. They were shot, he explained, because they had been encountered without the Jewish star during roundup... (Browning 16) justification described as that is not from men feeling racial hate toward the Jews. These men were not completely morally certain of their actions and in order to justify it in their heads created shaky logic as to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Blue Green Anesthesia Mask Essay As I m wheeled through the silver doors into the sterile white operating room, I begin to panic. This is my first surgery, and I feel as if I am in a living nightmare. Before I can even think about it, the nurses guide me onto the skinny white operating room bed. A few seconds later, the blue green anesthesia mask is put on my face, and I feel like I am going underwater with my eyes closed. Then everything around me goes completely black. I was diagnosed with a rare, non agressive type of skin cancer on my scalp in 2011. Soon after diagnosis, I underwent an MRI to see exactly how big the cancer was. Fortunately, it was only the size of a pencil eraser. After seeing countless doctors, we (my parents and I) finally decided to see a surgeon specializing in cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. We met with the cancer surgeon (Dr. Wayne), and he agreed to remove the cancer. We also saw a plastic surgeon (Dr. Kim) the same day to discuss reconstruction options so that my scalp would look as normal as possible after the surgery. My surgery is scheduled for the morning of February 8, 2012 at 7 AM; however, we need to arrive at the hospital at 5:30 to start the preparation process. As we walk through the Outpatient Surgery unit doors, I immediately notice the amount of chaos surrounding the unit. You wouldn t know that it was only 5:30 AM with all the noise! There are people making phone calls, crying babies, and others who were trying to escape it all by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A major area of interest today is the development and progression of amyloid diseases such as Alzheimer s disease, Huntington s disease, and transmissible bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Previous studies have shown that different proteins contain short identical sequences in their secondary structures that have completely different functions and folding mechanisms. It has also been shown that these same sequences can be induced to form an О± helix, ОІ strand, or ОІ sheet structure depending on the context. These findings have suggested that chameleon sequences have a sense of structural plasticity which can pose a problem for protein secondary structure prediction. While previous research has only focused on the notion of identical sequences within an О± helix in one protein whereas a different protein has the same identical sequence but instead of an О± helix, the sequence is within a ОІ strand; Guo et al. delve deeper into the notion that there is also the possibility of these sequences being found within a ОІ sheet or ОІ hairpin conformation. To distinguish between the two, Guo et al. introduced the terms chameleon HS and chameleon HE. Chameleon HS refers to the sequences with helix and strand structures whereas chameleon HE refers to the sequences with helix and sheet/hairpin structures. • 17. Voltaire Rationalism Voltaire was a rebellious and radical thinker, whose sharp wit and pointed satire drew the ire of critics who say he disrespected the orthodoxy of church and state, and won the respect of a growing rationalist movement that had emerged out of the public sphere in Europe between the 17th and 18th centuries. Although Voltaire is known today for being a philosophical powerhouse, whose writing is the stuff of legend, for most of his life he only wrote plays, poems, and novels. It wasn t until he was almost forty in 1733 that he published his first major philosophical work, Letters Concerning the English Nation. This was a series of letters that describe the customs, cultures and great men of England, and even though his praise for England, a country where all the arts are honored and rewarded, and where one could think free and nobly without being held back by any servile fear, may be overblown, they are important nonetheless, because it highlights the virtues that an Enlightened society should strive for. (114) In many ways these were not so much love letters to England, as much as they were a call for the rest of Europeto progress in the rationalist movement that England had set the tone for. Voltaire had suffered many setbacks in life before his trip to England in spring of 1726 that had shaped his mindset, and made him skeptical to authority. • 30. Assembly Line Olympics of History Assembly Line Olympics of History Assembly lines are a big part of manufacturing in almost every country in the world. Some work better than others, so an analytical breakdown would be required to be able to tell which factories and countries are more effective than others, and what they do to get that way. The function of organized work and division of labor has been around since ancient times. On the timeline of organized work, the closer one gets to modern day, the more organized labor becomes, and the more labor gets divided. It started with the three basic job groups, food, child care, and shelter (Kranzberg, 1). Then, in places such as Greece, Rome, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, labor was divided up by social classes. The rulers and nobility were the ones overseeing the work and directing the economy, (Hannan, 2), while the priests held knowledge of writing, reading, math, and the more scholarly subjects. Next down the line were clerks and scribes, (Kranzberg, 2), and then merchants and traders underneath them who bought and sold goods. Then there were peasants, slaves, and lastly prisoners of war who were forced to work. We can see some similarities of this ancient hierarchy in modern day. The social/working pecking order of ancient times hasn t faded. We have the government officials, the politicians, the doctors lawyers, the modern merchants and salesmen, the working class, and even convicts who work to earn credit or are even forced to work. ... Although stories like The Murder of Rue Morgue can have a creepier environment, the story The Black Cat, can fit the criteria for the setting requirements in gothic literature. This is because the environment is known for being more eerie than the others. For example, The Masque of the Red Death is set in an isolated alley and gives an off feeling, but The Black Cat is a more modern way of a creepier setting. The abandoned building can affect more modern stories, because they are the places where murders or other gruesome events typically occur. Next, in most gothic literature novels, the main character, whether that be the protagonist or antagonist, are usually thought as sinister or menacing. These few stipulations can undoubtedly be classified in the story The Black Cat, because the character undergoes many evil things within himself. To begin, the time period that Odyssey is a part of is known as Homeric society. Homeric society is a concoction of diverging assortments in various points in history. Because the setting is a combination of different times from several coteries, the story includes many ideas and values particular to each one. In the 8th century BC, the Mediterranean saw a growth in population after the dark age, thus leading to the menagerie that the Ancient Greeks partook in. Moving forward, there is much evidence that suggests that epics were created between 750 and 650 B.C.E. In Boethius The Consolation of Philosophy, he provides in the twelfth poem of his third book, a summary of the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. He utilizes the tale to showcase a parallel between their tragic love and the Christian s relationship with God. Orpheus yearning for his deceased wife is similar to the strong belief a Christian has for God. Considering Boethius, and others of his time, viewed God as the embodiment of goodness, the beginning lines of his poem, Happy, the one who can see/ the clear source of good,/ happy, the one who can release/ the chains of heavy earth can represent a Christian (Boethius lines 1 4). As stated in the poem, he looked, lost, fell (line 51). He loses Eurydice because he fails to trust in the person who is behind him and disobeys the order given to him. The moral message and final line given in this poem is essentially a rewording of the previously cited line, one loses when one sees the lower worlds (line 58). Yet, there does exist a small difference between the two lines, in which the final message claims seeing the lower worlds suggest failure. This line would suggest seeing Eurydice therefore equates to seeing the lower worlds or, in other words, Hell. Moreover, the reason why Orpheus fails is because of his growing distrust. His inability to believe Eurydice is behind him parallels the idea of a believer doubting in their God. Looking from All Quiet on the Western Front to actual happenings in the war you can bring them together and see the similarities in living as a soldier in the trenches, and how the men passed time during World War 1. Life for a soldier in the trenches in WW1 as described in actual letters and as described as in the book sounded very alike. In the book it talks about the human eating rats, trench foot and leaving the dead bodies lying on the ground just for something dry to walk on. Killing each separate louse is a tedious business when a man has hundreds. The little beasts are hard and the everlasting cracking with one s fingernails very soon becomes wearisome. (Remarque, 1929, p. 75) This is an example in the book that can be connected to real life is when Paul and all the other men are sitting around the fire picking lice out and burning them in a tin. Since then we have learned better than to be shy about such trifling immodesties. (Remarque, 1929 p. 8) In that sentence Paul is discussing the toilets, or latrines, saying how when he first started using the them they were nasty and it was embarrassing, but now he s comfortable with using them. I cannot bear to look at his hands, they are like wax. Under the nails is the dirt of the trenches, it shows through blue black like poison. (Remarque, 1929, p. 15) Paul describes the trench mud as poison, because it is. It caused men to lose limbs, feet and sometimes their lives because it caused gangrene. The rats here are particularly repulsive they are so fat the kind we call corpse rats. (Remarque, 1929, p. 102) The trenches could be very muddy and smelly. There were many dead bodies buried nearby and the latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches. Millions of rats infested the trenches and some grew as big as cats. Greenwald research found that, smokers generally appeared to visit bars more often, stay at bars longer, and consume more drinks than their non smoking counterparts (103). Wes seemingly grew up the same as any other kid in the Bronx in a single parent household, surrounded by bad influences... what separated him from the crowd? His support system: his family, and their ultimate support and sacrifices made all the difference. As a teenager, Wes seemed to be going down the wrong path. He constantly skipped school, his academic failures were overwhelming, and he was even arrested for vandalism. In the case of the other Wes, his family simply let these actions slide, and decision after decision ultimately landed him with a life sentence in prison. The author Wes s mother, however, refused to allow this behavior to continue. As a method of intervention, she forced Moore to attend Valley Forge, and in doing so, probably saved his career. The extent of his family s sacrifice was evident on page 95 when Wes realized that my grandparents took the money they had in the home in the Bronx, decades of savings and mortgage payments, and gave it to my mother ... • 55. The Truman Show By Peter Weir For centuries, man has dreamt of constructing pristine simulated worlds , existing in a separate sphere from our imperfect reality. From the town of Pullman, a company town south of Chicago to Disney World, attempts to force Utopia have failed, falling prey to the complications of people s personal desires. The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, tells us the story of The Truman Show, an elaborate reality show built around the control of one man s life. Christof, the director, has created an entire living city for Truman, the star of his show, and the only one not in on this whole elaborate fakery. Essentially, Truman is living his life in the simulation of a flawless, archetypal American town, for the entertainment of millions of viewers around the world. Christof, along with countless others obsessed with the idea of controlling part of the world to fit their visions of an ideal reality, have deluded themselves into thinking fictional utopias can exist apart from the undeniable constraints of reality. Their fundamental flaw lies in relying on the assumptions of psychological behaviorism, and the belief that they could perfectly condition the behaviorof the inhabitants follow the goals of the community. In order for Christof s scheme to work, Truman must be unaware that he s living in a simulation, and be satisfied with the simulated life that s presented to him. In the African Americancommunity it is usually fear and anxiety of the motive of the authoritative figure, especially if you are a male. The intersection of race and gender for the African American male provides a basis for premature judgment by many authoritative figures in their lives. African American males deserve the same equality to succeed in life as any other human being without the threat of the damned if you do, damned if you don t moniker that defines the functional ability ... Currently the Federal Bureau of Investigation is collecting racial and ethnic information and mapping American communities based on crude stereotypes about which groups commit different types of crime and sharing it with unknown state, local and federal agencies (American Civil Liberties Union, 2012). Since 9/11 the operating parameters Americans expect to protect their rights to privacy have been obliterated. The FBI can now initiate an investigation of a person without the standards of just cause that once protected the rights of all Americans. To the African American male this is nothing new, random searches and undue investigations have always been a part of being an AAM. From a police prospective there are ongoing efforts to equalize the authorities governing the communities focused on diversifying the system and gaining trust amongst the inhabitants. Jones Brown (2001) argues that to be black and male amounts to a fatal profile for which there has been little to no judicial redress. She cites Natapoff (2004) in noting that one in four black males 20 29 years of age is locked up, on probation or parole, or being pressured to snitch. The research goes further to say that one in twelve in high crime areas are snitching under duress causing a social breakdown of communities nationwide. Let s not assume that the ...
