Ulrich Beck is a German sociologist who has elaborated a formulation of the theory of reflexive
modernization, which is characterized by two theses: risk thesis and individualization thesis.
Beck s thesis in Germany has been understood as a bal ance of these two theses, but in Anglo
Saxon sociology the risk thesis has been influential . For better understanding of individualization
process it s necessary to explain what is new and specific in this process. The new is that
something that earlier in nineteenth century was expected of a few to lead a life of their own to
day is demanded by more and more people. The new element is, first, the democ ratization of the
individualization processes and the second also conditions in soci ety... Show more content on

In the process of reflexive modernization the people are getting free from the traditions. People
living in the modernized so cieties develop an increasing engagement with intimate and public
aspects of heir lives, the aspects previously were regulated by tradition. These developments are
building up the individualization and its operation is regulated by disintegration and
reinvention. For example: going out from the traditions and disintegration of previ ously
existing social forms as fixed gender roles, inflexible class locations etc. . The individual has to
be understood as being the author of his or her own life . The individual increasingly lives in
conditions of freedom whilst continuing being dependant for his or her identity and optimal
functioning on institutions and social interaction . 4.2.1.A LIFE OF ONE S OWN In many west
countries the people desire to take the control over their lives. If you ask the people what they
want to achieve many of them will answer striving for a life of one s own . Today the national
state, class, ethnicity and traditional family is in decline, but in modern society the ethic of
individual self fulfillment and achieve ment is the most powerful trend . The choosing, declining,

3. Analysis Of The Movie The Grand Parade
OILDORADO
MILLER, JEREMY
Last weekend in Taft, California, two hours north of Los Angeles, between the procession of
floats and marching bands, grown men in cowboy attire shot at one another with antique
revolvers, rifles and shotguns. The concussions rattled plate glass windows of stores along Center
Street, many of which stand vacant. As the men passed by, children rushed into the street to pick
up the spent cartridges, which they found mixed in with lollipops and pieces of gum. This is the
Grand Parade, the finale of Taft s Oildorado festival, an unbridled street party held every five years
to celebrate the region s patron industry oil.
A man on one float dressed as an oil smeared roughneck yelled, God bless Taft! and Made in
America! as he tipped a yellow hardhat toward the waving crowd. Another float ferried the Maids
of Petroleum, young beauty competition participants dressed in fishnet tights and Old West bustle
skirts. The competition winner, known as the Oil Queen, sat smiling in a white wicker throne
before a glittery cutout of a derrick gushing a rooster tail of crude.
Most associate the Central Valley with agriculture. But here in the dry southwestern corner of the
vast basin, oil is the undisputed king. The giant oil fields that envelop the town of 9,000 the
Midway Sunset, Cymric and Belridge are among the largest in the country, each having produced
over a billion barrels of oil. The landscape reflects that reality. Fields of pump jacks

4. Tank Weapons Research Paper
Tank Warfare
Tanks huge, movable, masses of metal capable of destroying anything in their path. It would only
seem logical that tanks would be considered an important part of a country?s battle plan.
However, in the early stages of WWII the tank was only seen as support for the infantry. As WWII
progressed so did the view of tank uses in battle. Comparing and contrasting the United States,
Britain, and German tanks during WWII would require one to look at a variety of design elements,
the skills of the tank commanders, the willingness and ability of the countries to make
improvements based on need, and most importantly a change in each country?s belief that the tank
could be a valuable part of a war plan. Based on the above listed items ... Show more content on

Captain Michael Wittman led the most lethal tank attack of WWII. His kill record includes 138
tanks, 132 anti tank guns and a countless number of vehicles. He is most famous for an attack
that he took out as many as 14 tanks, 2 anti tank guns and 15 more vehicles in a 15 minute time
frame. Sgt. Kurt Kinspel is Germanys WWII Top Tank Ace. Not only is he honored with this
title but he is also honored with being the top tanks ace in history. His kill record is at 168. His
most incredible kill he made was hitting a T 34 tank almost two miles away. (?Highest Scoring
Tank Leaders of WWII.? Web. 04 Mar. 2016)
As previously described the tank commanders for all countries were a crucial part of tank warfare.
In terms of the skills of the tank commanders, Germany ranked higher than the US and Britain due
to their history of destruction, accuracy and frequency of attacks.
A lot of countries got caught up in being the biggest and strongest that they forgot about the trusty
tanks that have worked over time. They wasted resources and time trying to develop these big and
soon to be found useless tanks.
Germany unwisely used some of their tank production on useless designs trying to create bigger
and stronger tanks with better ingenuity when they should have been using their smaller resources
to make many of the reliable tanks that have already been proven in batter time and time again.

5. Herram Delvile
The relationship between Cecilia and Mortimer Delvile is one of the most frustrating parts of the
novel. Delvile is an indecisive, self centered man who does not think about the effects that his
actions might have on another person. He is not malicious, but he is inconsiderate and he
introduces great pain into Cecilia s life. He initially confesses to her that he loves her, then ignores
her just long enough that she is able to move on from him, then comes back into her life under the
pretense of friendship, and then he leaves again. His flippant disregard for her feelings takes a toll
on Cecilia as she tries to pinpoint what kind of relationship they actually have. Delvile finally
decides that he does indeed loveher and want to be with her, so he travels to find her and suggests
what he believes to be an excellent compromise for the both of them: a secret wedding.... Show

The line The joy with which he heard it...was as violent as the eagerness with which he had
sought it is especially poignant; while Delvile may love Cecilia, he is totally ignorant of how a
secret wedding will take a toll on her personal morality. The scene comments on how men often
innately brush aside female concerns because they are affected by them, nor do they want to take
the time to understand where women are coming from. Not to mention, the secret wedding is only
on the table in the first place because Delvile cannot bring himself to take Cecilia s surname as his
own, therefore taking on a traditionally female

6. George Orwell s Use Of Language In Animal Farm
Thesis: In George Orwell s Animal Farm, the language Orwell uses serves in favor of the
occupants of Animal Farm but gradually transforms into the bane of their existences which creates
a mood of confusion, illustrating the psychological wreck amoung the masses in the Russian
Revolution for the readers. At the start of the Revolution, Old Major shares his original ideas
during his speech. Speaking to the animals, he concludes, All the habits of Man are evil. And,
above all, no animal must never tyrannise over his own kind. (31) Old Major implies that the worst
habit of man is their power hungry nature, so he declares these vows to separate themselves from
mankind. He gives the animals the feeling of empowerment, giving them the idea that... Show more

For example, in Old Major s speech, he states, ...for your four confinements and all your labour

revolution against humans, the animals lives would improve and they would have much better
living conditions, setting moods of hope and determination. Eventually, rations are mentioned
again, but in a completely light. In the midst of being overworked, Squealer explains to the
animals, ...too rigid equality in rations...would have been contrary to the principles of animalism.

Squealer emphasizes how the farm s production rates have skyrocketed compared to when Mr.
Jones was in charge. This sets a mood of passiveness and weariness about the animals, which the

8. Andromache s Lamentations In The Iliad Analysis
Throughout the Iliad lamentations provide eulogies of heroic figures, which praise their past deeds
and individual traits, often through the expression of a speaker s personal feelings and attachment.
When Hektor dies, however, Andromache delivers lamentations that deviate from the trend of other
lamentations in the Iliad. Andromache s lamentations are future oriented instead of being rooted in
the past, and deliver narratives about the future of Hektor s family and the Trojans rather than
displaying words of effusive emotion. Moreover, Andromache employs antithesis, a technique that
makes her lamentations more complicated and meaningful than the lamentations of others Briseis,
Helen, or Hekabe, for instance. With these unique... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, Homer s diction is composed of successive terms that possess feminine and domestic
qualities. Compounded with Andromache s innocence, the diction overturns the violent and
gruesome atmosphere of previous battle scenes and brings in warm, domestic serenity. In later
lines, however, the martial qualities are revived and directly contrast with this domesticity.
Andromache runs out of the house like a raving woman with pulsing heart, just like a soldier
whose brother or a close friend had died (22.460 461). When she comes up the wall and sees
Achilles dragging Hektor around, she faints, and this scene even more resembles the death of a
soldier, particularly Patroklos:
The darkness of night misted over the eyes of Andromache.
She fell backward, and grasped the life breath from her, and far off threw from her head the shining
gear that ordered her headdress, the diadem and the cap, and the holding band woven together, and
the circlet, which Aphrodite the golden once had given her (22.466 470).
Not only Homer uses the expression darkness of night misting over the eyes, a common phrase
used to describe the deaths of soldiers, but also Homer likens the way Andromache falls
backward to a dead soldier getting disarmed. In the scene when Hektor kills Patroklos, Patroklos s
iron shod, far shadowing spear, shield, and corselet drop to the ground, one by one (16.801 804).
Similarly, here, Andromache s diadem,

9. Research Paper On Roberto Firmino
Big Game Player
Roberto Firmino also has the innate ability to turn up in the big games. We have seen relatively
little of him in the Premier League so far but his record in crunch games is good. Against the
likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal he has scored 5 and assisted
3 in 8 appearances across all competitions. If you also simply look at the games where Liverpool
made tough work of the opposition, you will notice how crucial Roberto has been in the scoring.
For instance he struck twice in the 3 3 draw at Anfield to Arsenal, he scored twice and assisted
once in the thrilling last gasp 5 4 victory to Norwich at Carrow Road, he scored one and assisted
the other in a draw vs. Sunderland at Anfield and assisted the only goal of the game at Anfield
against league leaders Leicester. This of course isn t counting the second goal scored against
Manchester United in the Europa League first leg right at the death to extend Liverpool s lead
crucially, thus allowing the Merseyside club a crucial added advantage going into the second leg.

competitions where Liverpool have fielded weakened teams . Hence, this statistic is a little difficult
to trust.

Abstract For this lab we will use Bradford assay and spectrophotometers in order to determine the
concentration of protein in commercially produced food products. The experiment concluded the
three given milk samples, breakfast milk has the most amount of protein. After calculating and
recording data, we founded that whole milk had the least amount of protein, and breakfast milk
ended up having the most protein. Leaving Muscle Milk with less protein than the breakfast milk

First we began setting the spectrophotometer to 595 nm. We than label each cuvette with
numbers corresponding to the concentrations. To each cuvette we added 1 ml of coomassie blue
dye and on the blank cuvette we added 20 ul of PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline). We then added
20 ul of each standard to the respective cuvettes using a new clean tip for each use. Each cuvette
was covered with parafilm and inverted to mix allowing it to sit for a total of 5 minutes. We first
inserted the blank cuvette into the spectrophotometer and pressed blank once right after we put in
each of the cuvettes with the protein concentrations. In between each cuvette we put in a blank
before the next step. After the absorbance were recorded, we created the standard curve. We then
graphed the standard curve, with solutions and their protein concentrations. We then labeled each
cuvette along with a blank. We repeated the process from finding the standard curve with the
known solution. We then used the equation from the standard curve in order to find the
concentrations of proteins and compared. The concentration is the independent variable which is
plotted on the x axis and the absorbance is the dependent variable which is plotted on the y axis.

11. Analysis Of Equus By Peter Shaffer
Consciousness can be defined as one s awareness of their actions, thoughts, or surroundings. It is
the ability to understand things beyond our eyes. And what I mean by that is one can see things
through their eyes, but consciousness allows one to comprehend it on a deeper level. It leads to
how we behave, how we function. The definition of community when I google it, is a group of
people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. I would describe
community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests. In IGE 120, the

definition always in flux. For some it signifies cutting edge work that pushes the limitations of

The Sixth Chapter contemplates Moments in History by using documentary photography in a form

here present the tales of the consequences of political and human disruption. Moreover, others
investigate the visual records of isolated communities.
The seventh Chapter Revived and Remade investigates and exploits ones preexisting knowledge of
imagery by mimicking and remaking well known photographs.
Finally Chapter 8 Physical and Material draws attention to the many decisions that photographers
have made to the physical and material properties of photography. Some use analogue while others
have mixed different mediums such as installations and sculptural work mixed with photography.
The second part of the chapter discusses alternatives ways of gaining exposure by the Internet. After
summarizing the content of this book, an in depth research of some photographers from chapter
five Intimate Life will be discussed.

15. The Issue Of The Catholic Religion
The Catholic religion is not one religion to stray form their ways and beliefs, matter of fact they
the Catholic Church is actually extremely strict and very stubborn when seeing a new point of
view on certain topics or the new role of people. Getting into why feminism is a big deal within
the Catholic religion, people believe that woman should be at home with the children taking care of
household needs, while the men provide for the family, such as work and saving food or just
protecting the family. Another modern day issue involving the Catholicreligion is that they are not
accepting of the gay and lesbian lifestyle. Not believing that this way of life is suitable, especially
if wanting to adopt a child and having that kid think this way of life is normal. Therefore, the
Catholics do not allow gays to practice in the Catholic Churches. They can go to church to listen to
the mass but that is all.
The Catholic Church does deny discrimination toward the gay community and the support has
increased research in the prevention of AIDS. Even though, the decision to get rid of the gay
men from the priesthood indicates that the Catholic Church is taking a more aggressive anti gay
stand (Hemeyer pg. 38). It is wrong that if you are not a certain way that the Catholic Church
will just go ahead and ban a person or not allow them to participate in specific activities either. On a
side note, only men are allowed to be a priest, woman are not allowed to practice and become a
priest

17. Feudalism and How It Affected Old England
Feudalism was a very important aspect in developing the political organization in medieval
England. It was one of dominant governments used by the nobles. Feudalism was when one of
the king s noblemen would give land to a man known as a fief and give the fief people to work the
land for him. These people are known as serfs. The fief would then protect the serfs from being
attacked as long, as long as the serfs worked the land to provide an income for the fief. If the fief
accepted the nobles offer he would have to swear his allegiance to the king. After he swore to the
nobles the fief would become a vassal to the noblemen. When the fief became a vassal he would
have to provide military services or any other type of service to the king. A fief could also become
a noble lord and could give some of his land away to other people known as fiefs. This process
would be known as subinfeudation and this could go all the way up to the king. Feudalismwas pretty
much the only government at the time of medieval England. Feudalism came about because of the
weak political groups and non existent governments. The king would use feudalism as a way to
show his power and make sure his military strength was strong. The use of this political
organization slowly died out. With an eye toward discovering the nature of the Marxists transition

18. The Political Messages Behind Harrison Bergeron
The Political Messages Behind Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut s short story Harrison
Bergeron gives the account of a married couple living in the year 2081. At that time, government
had implemented a long list of policies that effectively made everyone equal in every possible
way. Vonnegut s story can be translated to reflect that too much government, or a single
powerful ruler, can be devastating to a population that strives for freedom. In 2081, the
government has created the position of Handicapper General, whose duty is to add handicaps to
those who are above average in any way. While Hazel Bergeron was completely average in
mental capacity, her husband, George, was well above average. To compensate, the Handicapper
General had placed a radio in his ear to, keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of
their brain. The idea of treating everyone equal, regardless of physical or mental abilities, as
described within the story, is taking satirical shots at liberal ideas in government. Once the
government has made everyone equal, those who stand out represent a threat, including the
Bergeron s son Harrison, who was too athletic and handsome to be a part of the general population.
He was taken away from his parents, at the age of fourteen, by the Handicapper General, because he
was too exceptional. Too promote the ongoing liberal equality, the government basically changes

Apart from General takaful, wakalah model was applied in takaful family. In this model, the
contribution of revenue from the contributions and contributions are divided into investment
accounts (PIF), the risk of Accounts (PRF) and also wakalah fees. The division between the PIF,
PRF and wakalah fees are based on the value or rate agreed in the contract. Fee income for the

surplus funds in the PRF will be invested in instruments of government of Islam, Islamic private

Investment gains will be distributed among the takaful operator and accounts participants (PIF and
PRF) in the form of a performance fee based on an agreed ratio. In PIF funds collected and paid

22. The Odyssey By Homer And The Old Testaments
The Odyssey by Homer and the Old Testaments: King James Version are two of the most read and
most sophisticated pieces of literature that have transcended through generations. While they share
similar qualities; both greatly differ as well, especially when it comes to the women characters.
Classical historian and professor of classical studies at Wellesley College, Mary Lefkowitz, makes a
significant contrast between these two famous writings. She believes that a major difference
between the women of each story differ dramatically when it comes to their personality and actions.
[Although] the notion... that a man should be active and aggressive, a women passive and
subjected to the control of the men in her family, are expressed in virtually every Greek myth, even
the ones in which the women seek to gain control over their own live....[so] that it is possible to
show that the Greeks at least attributed to women a capacity for understanding that we do not
alway find in the other great mythological tradition that has influenced Western thought, namely, the
Old and New Testaments. (Women in Greek Myth, Mary Lefkowitz). I completely agree with
Lefkowitz statement on these characters, it s very clear that most of the women in the Old Testament
are very flat while the Odysseyis full of well rounded characters especially when it comes to Jacob s
wife Rachel and Odysseus s wife Penelope.

Reina of Antarctica
I propose a film on the melting ice caps, using the character Reina as the reason that they are
melting. She will be the reason for melting the ice caps due to humans came to her home and
drill for oil where she lives. I chose to have both Greek and Japanese mythology because I
thought it would be a great idea to see how the two cultures will come together. Since both
countries are known by many people all around the world and because they are surrounded by the
sea these two countries would be the first to be swallowed by the sea that surrounds then due to the
melted ice caps. The ending is supposed to represent the ice caps still melting now. The government
that is going to sponsor the drilling company will be the English because the English are newer at
drilling than the United States, since they are new at drilling they were exploited by the company.
Antarctica, extremely cold and the home of penguins, and huge icebergs. The home of the
princess of the cold, Reina. She wears what a normal teenager may wear during the summer. Yet, it
is during the winter and she doesn t mind it. It is during the third quarter of year, so it is extremely
cold and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. She is friends with all the animals near her home. She is a beautiful
young woman who transforms into a monster when she is upset.

24. Similarities Between Zaabalawi And The Alchemist
Naguib Mahfouz s short story Zaabalawi and Paolo Coelho s novel The Alchemist both trace the
encounters of a narrator who embarks on a spiritual journey. The works are strikingly similar in that
they are both are organized as quest narratives, and both are set in the middle east with the same
endgame in mind: enlightenment. As Santiago from The Alchemist and the unnamed narrator from
Zaabalawi travel, they embody the seeker archetype, and from each person they meet, they gain
wisdom and strength. Despite similarities of plot and character, however, the narratives draw
different conclusions. While Coelho s novel stands out as a quasi religious tribute to mental
fortitude and universal oneness, Mahfouz s short story touches on the spiritual... Show more content

In both stories, a strongly developed narrator is aided by a notably transient supporting cast. One
such member of Santiago s supporting cast is the King of Salem, who tells Santiago he will help
him find the hidden treasure because Santiago has succeeded in discovering [his] personal
legend (21). A whole cast of characters, from the Englishmen to the Alchemist, go on to advance
Santiago s cause in a very explicit manner. They provide him money, wisdom, or experience. The
Alchemist is especially notable: derived from the books title, his character is sagacious and and
possess complete understanding of the Soul of the World. In the work, the Soul of the World is
associated with spiritual growth; in Mahfouz s story, the idea of Zaabalawi functions similarly.
Characters in the latter tale become progressively more in touch with Zaabalawi, who seems to
represent some sort of spiritual presence. In general, Mahfouz s story is more implicit, but also
more structured. The only information provided about Zaabalawi is that he s a true saint of God, a
remover of worries and troubles, but with each new interaction, the narrator s acquaintances become
closer to the presence of Zaabalawi with each new interaction. This correlation can then be used to
infer about the true nature of this spiritual being. The first character met by the narrator, Seikh
Qamar, is cushioned by a layer of luxurious materialism: in his office, noted are a beautiful woman
with...intoxicating perfume, a fine leather upholstered chair, and a costly carpet, among other
things (883). The man is dismissive, cold, and materialistic: he represents a modern figure distanced
from spirituality. The next characters are more artistic and increasingly able to balance attributes of
traditionalism and modernism. Character two, a local sheikh, wears

27. Juvenile Delinquency Is Participation Of Illegal Behavior...
Juvenile Delinquency is participation of illegal behavior by minors. Although it is no single path
to juvenile delinquency, the presence of several risk factors often increases a youth s chance of
offending. Risk factors have been defined as those characteristics, variables, or hazards that, if
present for a given individual, make it more likely that this individual, rather than someone
selected from the general population, will develop a disorder(May 2014). Risk factors predict an
increased probability of later offending but it is true that certain protective factors may work to
offset risk factors. To determine this, an assessment is given to the juvenile. This risk assessment
will configure the type of intervention that will best suit the individual youth needs in order to
decrease their risk of offending. The top three key social factors that contribute to juvenile
delinquencyin the 21st Century are family, peers, and community. In this paper I will focus on the
different aspects of each top key social factor and the affects it will have on the juvenile. Family is
the biggest influence for early on set juvenile delinquency risk factors, primarily affecting children6
11 years of age (Shader). Children learn basic concepts about good and bad from their family; they
make their values and set the norm for society. Majority of the adolescents who show delinquent
behaviors at an early age in any form come from families that could not give firm foundations to the
children.

Nutrition Therapy and Crohn s Disease The Role of Nutrition Therapy in Crohn s Disease
According to the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation of America, Crohn s disease (CD) may affect as
many as 780,000 Americans1. The exact time of the onset of the disease is unknown, but it often
starts between the age of 15 and 35 for both men and woman. Currently, the diagnosis, etiology,
treatment, and cure of CD remain undefined. However, recent research suggests that hereditary,
genetics, and/or environmental factors play a role in the development of CD. Also, recent research
also suggests that poor diets and high stress levels aggravate the symptoms, but there is not
significant evidence to support the claim. Hence, the objective of this literature search is to
highlight the role of nutrition therapy as part of the process in prevention, treatment, and recovery
of the patient in regards to CD, because the incidences of CD in the U.S. are on the rise. Therefore,
the value of nutritional support in the prevention and treatment of malnutrition of the patient with
CD is essential, even though the essential role of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for CD is still
debated. Is important to mention that based on the evidence of controlled trials, MNT, and
specifically enteral nutrition, remains one of the most accepted treatments for CD, demonstrating
that enteral nutrition induces the same remission rates as well know pharmaceutical therapies. The
goal of MNT in regards to CD is to maintain

In today s society with the slack in rules and non aggressive management it is very easy for a
company to produce an environment where theft seems acceptable. Employees steal and find that
there aren t any repercussions for their crime so they continue the behavior. It s all positive for
them because they get something out of it and there is no punishment. It was reported by the
security Group of Cahner s Business that, if they saw others getting away with theft, 66% of
employees would steal. This is not including the 13% who already steal or would steal anyway

Where larger companies are making so much money that the missing money goes unnoticed. It
still hurts both companies but the larger ones are hurt to a lesser degree. Some small companies
with only a few employees don t have all of the extra profit to make up for the losses and can t
make them up. It is estimated that almost 1/3 of all bankruptcies are caused by employee theft.
With this much theft going unnoticed there desperately needs to be a change in regulations
surrounding employee theft. There are many actions a company can take to help prevent
employee theft. The first step is to heighten the rules and consequences of theft. The company
needs to make it clear that employee theft is not acceptable and will not be tolerated (Gale 2006).
Some companies believe that employee theft can t be controlled. It is these kinds of thoughts that
boost employee theft because the company does not even go over the basics with its employees.
Most employee theft is never discovered and goes unpunished. There are constantly increasing
numbers of employees stealing because their company has not set down the proper rules and
standards of behavior to prevent this. Employee theft can and has destroyed companies; slowly
decreasing profits from the inside of the business, to the point of bankruptcy. Although there are
different levels and types, all employee theft is very severe and deserves a strict punishment. With

atheists and why they believe there is no god. Thanks to you, I feel like I can more adequately

highlight a few arguments and ideas that have stuck with me the most. Before this however, I

When someone thinks of war they do not think of sunsets and rainbows, they think of death and
destruction. The propaganda surrounding war however, tries to make civilians think war is an

says it is okay because waris kind. Crane makes the reading think about how all this horrible
things happen, but yet the media still tries to say war is safe and the military is a great place to
make money and travel the world. The media does not tell you the consequences of war, just
tries to sell you on the positives. Glory is the thing most people wish to receive from the military,
they think that because they chose to serve their country they will feel immense glory and pride.

used to be the spirit of a river near Chihiro s old town, but he forgot his name. And he was

35. The Basic Characteristics Of Humanism During The Renaissance
Some of the basic characteristics of Humanism especially during the beginning were that it mostly
consisted and was centralized around Italy. The reading mentions that something that made Italy
different from Europe was that their members were part of the clergy. Being part of the clergy
defiantly have them an advantage in which they had some governmental and educational
experience. Something else that the reading mentions is that humanism meant rhetoric and
literature bases. In my opinion, this was really important because it focuses more attention on the
importance of education, history, and literature. This was just a starting point of what education
and the importance of it would eventually become. The beginning of humanism also bega the
practicing of history, one in which people actually wrote in means of history actually writing for it.
Humanitism increased in popularity and therefore inspired others to learn and do the same. Italians
viewed this situation as a preparation for the public life. With this, not only people benefit but the
whole society as a whole were benefited.
The classical value overall during the Renaissance was very impacting. I believe this because not
only did the Humanism thinking and Humanists help somehow develop better ways of thinking.
This not only opened new ways, but also better ways to think, act, and even create. The development
of Humanism helped create interest in new and even some controversial ideas. Rhe reading

The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 Throughout the period of colonization, several aspects of genocide
can be identified. From the Genocide Convention of 1948, genocide was lawfully defined as any
of the following committed with the intent to destroy in whole or part a national ethnical, racial, or
religious group as such: killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to
members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions to bring about its destruction,
imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group, and/or forcibly transferring
children of the group to another group. In what is modern day North America, European settlers
began colonizing the area in hopes of achieving their goals of expanding Christianity, acquiring
wealth for their countries, and/or gaining personal wealth and power. The European settlers had
little care about the indigenous people of the areas they were colonizing, leading to the American
Indian Wars (Lasting from 1622 1924) and the genocide of Native Americans. During this time
period, the Native American population decreased dramatically as a result of brutal war, disease,

example of someone who wishes to resist the oppression, but is forced by social standards and even
economical ones to abide by them. She is paid by the people who believe strongly from organized
religion, so if she resists the entirety of the oppression from the organized group then she would
be out of money, a town to socialize and live in, and her child which is her happiness she is my
torture (Hawthorne 325). Furthermore, Hester is her torment as well as happiness because if not
for her becoming pregnant, she would be in a normal house with her family and friends, on the
other hand Pearl is her happiness because it is still her child and she loves her. Then, Hester, being
brought up in this society herself, appeals to the emotion of the minister to try and persuade them
to let her keep Pearl. She says that God gave her into my keeping and that She should have
complete care of her (Hawthorne 325). Furthermore, the organized religious group in The
Scarlett Letter is oppressive because they form their own through and ways of life upon all
people of the town, as well as any visitors to the area. The people are stopped from resisting this
by formulating the idea that there is no way for someone to resist it and

42. Summary Of The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber
From Child to Man: The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber
Ernest Hemingway was a great American writer and journalist. Hemingway used a number of
different foils to give insight into his characters and foreshadow events to come in his writings.
In Hemingway s short story The Happy Life of Francis Macomber , a number of critics argue
about what exactly he used to tell the story of Francis Macomber growing from a cowardly boy to
a courageous man. One thing we can t argue about is the fact he did such a wonderful job.
Theodore L. Gaillard, Jr. argues in his journal article, The Critical Menagerie of The Short Happy
Life of Francis Macomber , that he believes that Hemingway used an animal menagerie as a
standard against which to measure and evaluate his human actors (Gaillard 31 32). In Gaillard s
journal article. He says the foil Hemingway used in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber
, are the different animals that are mentioned in his short story. Before getting to Africa, Francis
Macomber only had experience in spending money, fishing and hunting small animals (Gaillard
32). Francis is described as a rabbit hare towards the beginning of the story by himself, his wife and
Wilson, the hunter. I bolted like a rabbit Francis says in The Short Happy Life of Francis
Macomber (Hemingway 4). Francis uses the rabbit to describe his cowardice when running from the
lion he supposed to be hunting. More specific than this implicitly negative criticism of Macomber is

became a riot in the city. This movement, over the past decade, has been fizzling away. Every

High fructose corn syrup is known to be a tasty and all around unhealthy sweetener that we human
consume. The inexpensive and readily obtainable sweetener has caused an epidemic obesity that
plagued the world shortly after it has been introduced worldwide at supermarkets. Considering that
HFCS is heavily processed in many foods as a substitute for table sugar, it is permeated into almost
every food we eat. Eating too much food containing HFCS may be good for our taste bud, but it
does not mean it is good for our body. The predominant sweetener leads to obesity because it has a
copious amount of sugar, metabolizes differently than any other sugar, and are nowadays falsely

Fructose can only be metabolized by the liver because only the liver has a transporter for it.
Whereas glucose can be metabolized by every cell in the body. Also, fructose goes through a
metabolic change that keeps your body from burning fat. This means that all fructose gets stored
in your fat cells and are then turned into fat. Moreover, fructose causes people to gain more
calories because they do not feel as if they are full. As Jacqueline states, As an increase in insulin
and leptin are associated with satiety, some researchers theorized that perhaps ingesting fructose
instead of glucose leads people to consume more calories because they do not get the right signals
to feel full (Jacques, n.d.). Insulin is a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood.
Leptin is a hormone that will help regulate your appetite. A increase in insulin and leptin will
signal your body that you are full. Although, as you become resistant to the results of insulin and
leptin, you end up eating more. Nowadays many food are advertised to persuade the audience that

Alexander described Soredamors as fair and full of charm, so dear and precious. Her well
shaped nose and radiant face, and her laughing mouth which God shaped with great skill.
Soredamors neck beneath her hair was so fair it was four times as white as ivory. Alexander saw
her bosom exposed and whiter than snow. There is so much to say about every part of
Soredamors that it will not be strange if he passed over anything. She had lovely hair, extremely
straight and perfect parting of her hair and eyes. Her hair, parting, forehead, and eyes were so
beautiful they were nevertheless describable. That is not the case when it comes to her nose,
cheek and mouth. Mouth s are described as a direct connection to God s and Nature s creation.
Soredamors states that it is not without significance she is called by the name. She is destined
to love and be loved in return and intends to prove it by her name. The first part of Soredamors
name is in significance of golden color, for she believes golden is the best. The end of her name

that her eyes have betrayed her, she accuses her eyes of treason and succumbs to love. One cannot

Every day, the human brain undergoes new experiences. New things are learned, connections are
made, and synapses occur. The body relies on the brain to understand one s surroundings, but the
brain also relies on the body, as the senses are needed in order to gather information. Every sense
is important for one to create a complete picture of the world, but things change when one of these
senses is missing. There have been a variety of studies on what happens to the brainas a result of a
missing sense, and they all point to a type of reorganization that occurs in the brain, which overall
results in an enhancement one or more of the senses that are left on which the brain to relies. The

The brains of humans and other mammals possess a compensatory mechanism, which is known
as cross modal plasticity and, prior to this study, it was thought to only be associated with
complex organisms (Hebrew, 2016). Cross modal plasticity allows the enhancement of one or
multiple senses following the loss of another sensory input. For example, if one were to lose his
or her eyesight, his or her hearing or sense of smell might increase in sensitivity and ability. The
roundworm C. elegans was a perfect specimen to study, as its nervous system is far less complex
compared to humans. The researchers mutated the worms and eliminated their sense of touch. As a
result, C. elegans developed an enhanced olfaction, so they responded more frequently to low
concentrations of certain odors, such as those of food (Rabinowitch et al., 2016). This change in
sensitivity was measured by how quickly the worms returned to their food supply after being
removed from it and comparing the results to non mutated worms (Rabinowitch et al.,

overall. It is clear that Pepsi holds a major stake in the market and is somewhat ahead of Coca

different tastes and this is where Pepsi has been taking some of the market share as some
consumers opt for Pepsi as their choice of beverage. Both companies represented in the graphs

Learn how to prevent high cholesterol and know what your cholesterol levels actually mean. A
good time to get your blood cholesterol checked and take steps to lower it if your levels are

Education Month is also a good time to learn about lipid profiles and about food and lifestyle
choices that help you reach personal cholesterolgoals. The National Cholesterol Education
Program (NCEP) states that adults aged 20 years or older have their cholesterol checked every
four to six years to stay on track with their cholesterol levels. To our surprise, many people do not
know that their cholesterol levels are high given that having high cholesterol generally doesn t
have any symptoms. However, doctors can administer a simple blood test called a lipoprotein
profile to check your cholesterol levels. A lipoprotein profile can measure your total cholesterol
levels, including LDL (low density lipoprotein, or bad cholesterol), HDL (high density
lipoprotein, or good cholesterol), and triglycerides (NECP). According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (2013), high cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease which is
currently the leading cause of death in the United States. Preventive recommendations for
cholesterol screening among young adults vary, but most experts agree on the need to screen
young adults who have other risk factors for heart disease or stroke
