Personality Characteristics Of Personality Traits
In chapter one of the textbook, it describes how to define personality. There is no single definition of
the word personality. That is because it is used in so many different ways, and because one word
describing someone s personality can be interpreted many different ways. For example, if you describe
yourself as a happy person , that could mean something different to another person who also describes
themselves as happy . Your personality is an arrangement of personality traits that describe a
consistent style of emotion or behavior. Personality traits can be recognizable in various situations of a
person s life. A personality trait can be, shy or outgoing those words are describing a daily behavior
that, on average, is consistent with that individual. Personality is made up from all different parts
genetics, social class, family and peers. The textbook says, some psychologists view the influence of
peers on personality greater than the influence of family. (Cervone Pervin, 2013) This is why siblings
from the same family have different personalities. Peer groups socialize individuals; they create a
whole new set of rules for behavior. This can be seen especially in adolescence. Starting high school is
hard, because everyone is trying to figure out where they fit in. When you are that age, you need a
sense of belonging to feel complete. The people you find that you fit in with will likely influence the
person you will become. I was one of the youngest in my

Marshmallow Test
According to the article, What Leads to Success in Life written by Jocelyn K. Giel, there are three
types of attributes that she states lead to a prosperous lifestyle. Using research produced by Walter
Mischel, a Stanford Psychologist, and other scientists, the first quality that she lists is self control, or
the ability to make decisions along with resisting worldly temptations. The next characteristics,
passion and perseverance, are traits that Giel uses of research conducted by Angela Duckworth, a
Harvard researcher, and Duckworth integrated these two attributes and labels them as grit . Grit,
according to Duckworth, is the tendency to not abandon tasks as well as not looking for a change , and
she draws this statement from personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientists conducted the test to observe the concept of delayed gratification of four year old children.
The results concluded that children who were able to resist eating a marshmallow, or treat, for fifteen
whole minutes were the ones who led better lives that were more behaved, less prone to addiction, and
scored higher on the SAT when re examined during their high school years. While the Giel s article
did not provide details concerning the children s upbringing or childhood, it provides a connection to
the children who possessed self control and consequently, how their lives are influenced by it.
However, Giel expresses later in the article that self control is not the only factor of success and then
introduces the two traits described by Duckworth as passion and perseverance, or grit. Duckworth
arrived at this conclusion after carefully studying psychologist Catherine Morris Cox s findings on
world recognized geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Leonardo Da Vinci. If these people, who are
prodigies in their respective fields, all possess these similar attributes, then logic may follow that these
qualities may indeed be the key to

Popular Support In Julius Caesar Essay
Popular support and the distribution of power are two intertwining concepts that are prominent in
Nicolo Machiavelli s 16th century treatise, The Prince, and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, of
the same era. While Machiavelli s treatise served to provide a practical guide to a reigning prince and
Shakespeare s play served to entertain an Elizabethan audience, both composers examine different
perspectives of popular support and the distribution of power.
The Prince similarly suggests that popular support is essential in achieving power, but prioritises the
importance of gaining support from the citizens over the support from nobles. Machiavelli critically
analyses the advantages and disadvantageous concerning monarchy and popular support ... Show more

Caesar s power is distributed amongst characters including Antony, Brutus and Octavian, and as such,
his own individual power is weakened, giving Brutus and the conspirators the opportunity to rebel
against him. Brutus power is conveyed in Cassius speech in Act 1 Scene 2, where he utilises rhetorical
questions including, Why would that name [Caesar] be sounded more than yours? and sarcasm by
referring Caesar as Immortal , to undermine Caesar s authority as a ruler. However, while Brutus and
the conspirators successfully murder Caesar, Antony and Octavian emerge as the victors at the Battle
at Philippi, suggesting that ultimately Caesar s spirit and rule lives in the noblemen who support him.
The recurring supernatural imagery of Caesar s spirit in both Brutus tent prior to the battle in Act 4
Scene 3 and on the battlefield conveyed by Brutus in Act 5 Scene 5, suggests that Caesar s spirit not
only metaphorically perpetuates but also literally appears in front of Brutus. The fact that the play is
named after him despite his death early in the play and not after Brutus, further enhances the idea that
the distribution of power from the leader to his noblemen allows the leader s rule to continue beyond

Shakespeare s Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero s Journey from Revenge
to Reconciliation
The Tempest opens on a ship at sea caught in a tempestuous storm . This setting would immediately
suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would be familiar with
other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for example, Macbeth and King
Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene would further reinforce the
audience s sense of evil afoot. The panic of the Boatswain is illustrated when he cries A plague upon
this howling and the terror of the passengers down below can be heard as they cry Mercy on us! ...

This very active opening establishes the theme for the play and the audience is left anticipating a story
of revenge and evil.
In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the
time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as
many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth,
superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero
establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda s opening speech suggests that her father
has magical powers, if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay
them . This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea
introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for
revenge is not clear at this point. The island s setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings
and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda s language contains much dark
imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky would pour down stinking
pitch has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm.

Shakespeare s The Taming Of The Farew And The Taming Of...
ENGLISH
The Taming of the Shrew , is one of William Shakespeare s most celebrated works in history and is
known to be one of his most comedic pieces of literature. With its lighthearted sense of a late 1500 s
Elizabethan era work, the famous play showed many relevant ideologies of society according to its
particular era in history. Many of Shakespeare s works have been adapted into successful films that
were made to suit the society of a new and different age, for example, his piece The Taming of the
Shrew , has been formed into several films and short films. In my opinion, it just shows that
Shakespeare s writings are still relevant today and forever will be timeless.
The most famous remakes of the of the 1500 s play, were Gil Junger s 1999 adaptation 10 Things I
Hate About You , and Franco Zeffirelli s 1967 version of The Taming of the Shrew . Both films show
elements of similar society ideologies, such as masculinity and femininity which are portrayed
through the main characters; Katherine, Kat, Petruchio and Patrick. Some characters show signs of
severe misogynistic characteristics, for example, as the dominant Petruchio tames the dominant
Katherine until she is submissive. To help corroborate with this is the quote For I am be born to tame
you Kate, And bring you from a wild Kate to a Kate. Conformable as other household Kates. This
quote proves that he believes Katherine should be like other females and that he wants to control her

inches from a tabletop. I will make a note of how many bounces it took before each egg broke. I will

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. Essay
Introduction The business case study proposal is a company case about General Atomics Aeronautical
Systems, Inc. (GAASI), the leading developer of unmanned aeronautical platform technologies (ga
asi.com, 2016). As noted on the GAASI website (2016), GAASI has been the premier provider and
value chain orchestrator (Mudambi, 2008) of remotely piloted aircraft, also referred to unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones, to the United States (US) government agencies since inception of the
highly innovative technology in the early 1990s. Reductions in the US defense budget, sequestration
and increased competition from other US based UAV platform providers such as Northrup Grumman
and Boeing (Hoovers Company Profile, 2016) has slowed GAASI sales to US and European allies in
recent years and caused layoff concerns (Shalal Esa, 2013).
Issue GAASI is considering entering the growing, but more uncertain India UAV market to offset the
reduction in UAV sales to advanced economies.
Company Overview GAASI, affiliate of privately owned General Atomics is headquartered in
Powhay, California with facilities in the San Diego area and Mojave Desert, as mentioned on the GA
ASI website (2016). The parent company, General Atomics, was found in 1955 as a division of
General Dynamics (ga.com, 2016). GAASI is the leading, pioneer (Siddiqui, 2015), designer and
manufacture of UAV technology. The principal aircraft platform developed by GAASI is known as
the Predator and associated

The Most Important Lessons For Military Leaders Essay
War is merely the continuation of policy by other means. Thus, in the sense of Clausewitz, national
military objectives have to derive from national policy. The 2015 NMS identifies three National
Military Objectives with an integrated approach: to deter, deny, and defeat state adversaries; to disrupt,
degrade, and defeat Violent Extremist Organizations (VEOs); and to strengthen our global network of
allies and partners. The most important lessons for military leaders for achieving these three military
objectives are: how to adhere and adjust the right cause in the realm of Just War Theory before going
to war; prepare for the full spectrum of 21st warfare from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
operation over counterinsurgency and hybrid warfare to high end war against a state on state
adversary. This wicked problem, to prepare for every imaginable scenario with decreasing resources
and overall strength, has to be solved by US armed forces, because the political leadership gave it this
task. This paper will focus on the most likely future scenarios for US military missions in the near
future and provide lessons and recommendations to be successful. Therefore, a short overview of the
hierarchical structure of US security documents has to be addressed to understand the three military
objectives in the context of political objectives. Afterward, three case studies will present the most
important lessons for the most likely scenarios of the near future: First,

Salton Beach Research Paper
In the 1950s and 60s, Bombay Beach in California was a thriving resort. Guests swam, water skied,
and golfed during the day, then headed to the yacht club to party at the end of the night. Now, Bombay
Beach is a faded, rusted, abandoned wasteland. The water smells like salt, gas, and rotting dead fish.
The shores lined with sunbathers before, and now they are covered in green sludge and dried fish
remains. To understand how this place turned from paradise to agony, you need to know the story of
the Salton Sea. Bombay Beach doesn t lie on the west coast, but in the Colorado Desert. In 1905, the
Colorado River swelled, penetrated its walls, and flooded the desert valley known as the Salton Sink.
The water flowed for two years, then creating a 15 by 35 mile lake named the Salton Sea. The creation
of this internal sea was an accident; it was initially emerged to deliver great benefits. Birds flocked to
the area, and fish bloomed in the Salton Sea. Developers held the rare setting and selected it the Salton
Riviera, or a miracle in the desert. Hotels, yacht clubs, homes, and schools sprang up by the shores, as
the Salton Sea became a resort destination and a great place to be. ... Show more content on

their rotting bodies onto the beach shores, and that s where they shriveled in the sun. As they rotted,
the sand became covered in a layer of scrappy fish skeletons. Birds also died in that water or have

1. What Role Does The Queen Of Hearts Play Against Alice
1. What role does the Queen of Hearts play against Alice? The Queen of Hearts bears similar qualities
as a boss in a game; she is the final obstacle Alice encounters before waking up. The Queen is the
ruler over Wonderland and is described as a cold hearted, short tempered tyrant. When Alice in the last
chapters of the book, meets The Queen, she encounters true fear. It is stated that Alice knows logically
there is nothing to fear, since both the Queen and the royal prosecution are simply a stack of playing

subconsciousness of humankind; feeling fear even though logic tells one not to. What the Queen also

Bronfenbrenner s Social Ecological Model
Introduction
The social ecological perspective is seen as a dynamic process in the development of people. The
focus of the social ecological model is the interaction between the person and environment. The
fundamental assumption is that behaviour is the result of the interaction between individuals and the
contexts they are exposed to. (Visser, 2007, p. 103) Personality characteristics and behaviour develop
in that interaction process. However psychological and biological factors do play an important role in
this process. The personality development is mainly determined by the interaction between
psychological, biological and environmental factors. (Moen, Elder, Luscher, 1995) There are various
theories about the social ecological development of people. One of them is Urie Bronfenbrenner social
ecological model. In this assessment I will be discussing Bronfenbrenners social ecological model and
its relevance to my own life. I will explore the ecological model in terms of my own childhood and
will discuss the impact it has on the distinctiveness in the South African context.

William Bradford and Thomas Morton
In the New World Bradford and Morton were both important men of our history. The stories of both
great men give us an insight into the way religion and influence affected Puritan life.
William Bradford said he believed, Plymouth people were the chosen people to live out their last days
in the earthly church (Daly pg 560). Puritan settlers came to the new world seeking a better life and to
get away from the rule of the Catholic Church they wanted to become a primitive Baptist church like
in the Old Testament. The Puritans wanted to live their lives in Old Testament biblical way of life;
when the settlers came to the, New England they thought they had landed in God s country (Callicott).

After reading various papers on the Puritans it is hard to imagine just how against any showing of
sexual pleasure was even forbidden between man and wife, much less frolicking with Indian women.
Although that was probably not something that was widely accepted, it was not against the law.
Morton called the drinking and songs with the red and whites harmless and Bradford called the pagan
ways.
Morton felt that Bradford s, accusations were more from fear of what he did not know and understand
and was not truly backed up by fact (Daly pg 564). Could you imagine the kind of world we would
have today if everyone spend this much time and effort on who slept with who? I am not saying that
people should just sleep around with people like trying on clothes, but unless you are hurting someone
just go your own way.
Bradford felt that Morton was an enemy against God (Daly pg 565). Bradford called Morton s conduct
Lord of misrule , and Morton felt like it was harmless fun (Schoenberg). His maypole festivities
smacked of folk superstitions and pagan practices; his consorting with Indian lasses violated their
sexual and racial taboos; his hospitality to indentured servants threatened their labor supply and social
order; and his trading of guns for furs not only stole the beaver and deerskin trade away but it also
armed their deadly enemies, who became a terror unto them, who

Americ A Unique Combination Of Many Cultures Essay
America is a unique combination of many cultures. We are a very diverse nation and we represent
many different countries throughout our culture. America allows different beliefs and cultures to
represent the diversity that this country has. Some people see diversity as an asset, while others see it
as a downfall. We have many different religions in the country, which occasionally causes problems.
Different races and views of races also cause problems, and is a current major issue in America. China
is extremely different from America, but we do share some similarities. China is not a diverse country
in any way.
America is a melting pot of cultures, bringing together foods from different parts of the world, but the
food culture of those countries is often not accurately represented. American Chinese food is such a

forms. People are surprised by the Russian and Korean influences that affect northern China (Steeley).

Taking a Closer Look at Phisics
Physics. Not something you really hear every day. It s not something you really want to hear either,
right? Why is it that when we hear the word physics, it s just a major turnoff. People may even hear
the word and just think get me out of here , even though they may not have the slightest clue of what it
s about. Some people do have a slight clue and think molecules or gravity, atoms or Bohr, laws or life,
and still may not quite grasp it, but at least have a slight clue. Others, think wasted time and
irrelevance, how it kicked their a** in both high school and college. Then the people who really can t

they cannot understand. Physics. The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of
matter and energy. Physics, is what you will be informed of today.
As we ve already stated in the definition, physics is the natural science that involves the study of
matter and its motion through space and time. So first off, matter, the building block of the universe, is
any substance which has mass and occupies space. All physical objects are composed of matter, in the
form of atoms. Atoms are in turn made up of neutrons, protons, and electrons. Matter also exists in
four states: solid, liquid and gas, and plasma; though there are more yet to be proven possible states.
Also, all matter is capable of being converted to energy. You might have heard of E = mc2, that would

(1984) and assumes that reality is socially constructed (Berger Luckmann, 1969), bounded by time
and space, and that individuals are knowledgeable. These assumptions lead to the use of an
interpretivist approach (Denzin Lincoln, 2000; Lincoln Guba, 2000; Yanow, 2000) that assumes social
reality is multifaceted and difficult to explain using immanent rules (Giddens, 1984; Turner, 1986). As
such, sensitizing concepts (Blumer, 1969; Giddens, 1984) that match the underlying assumption of the
study will be used instead of definitive concepts. Definitive concepts provide prescriptions of what to
see, sensitizing concepts merely suggest directions along which to look (Blumer, 1969, p.148).
Giddens (1984) suggests the duality of structure, people s knowledgeability, reflexive monitoring, and
time space as sensitizing concepts. Using Giddens s conceptual apparatus to develop and test
propositions is challenging and could even be seen as perverse, in light of Giddens s express
disavowal of the positivist project of proposing universal laws of society and using a hypothesis
testing, falsification approach to assessing their validity. But Giddens s non law sensitizing concepts
and attendant conceptual apparatus and elaboration do contain a number of fairly direct propositions
(as pointed out by Turner [1986]. So it does not really seem like such a great stretch after all to

The Book of Joshua
To fully grasp and understand the book of Joshua, it is important to take a look at the historical and
cultural context, understand the literary context, evaluate the text, and find relevance in the passage.
The passage that will be focused on will be Joshua 10:16 27. This passage begins with five Amorite
Kings that are discovered and then trapped in a cave. The kings hide in a cave in Makkedah. Joshua
finds where the kings are hiding and then proceeds to give instructions regarding what to do with the
kings. They trap the kings in the cave. Joshua proceeds to tell his troops to continue fighting. Joshua
and the Israelites defeat their enemies; there are few survivors left and the army returns to their leader,
Joshua. Joshua then uses the defeat of the five kings as an object lesson for his commanders. They
open the cave, in which the Kings are trapped in, the kings are than named and brought out to Joshua.
Joshua summons the men of Israel and order to place their feet on the King s neck. The commanders
do so and Joshua tells his men, Do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the
LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight (verse 25). The king s bodies are then exposed
on poles and are left there until evening. At sunset Joshua gave orders to take down the poles and
throw them into the cave in which the kings were hiding. They then placed large rocks in front of the
cave to which are there to do this day.

1. What was the significance of the tremendous growth of population in Britain s North American
colonies?
Britain had an advantage over America with their population in 1700. If Americans wanted to revolt,
Britain would outnumber them 25 to 1. However, in 1775, with the population increase (and
continuing to increase), Britain s advantage was weakening. There were now only 3 Europeans for
each American. This essentially meant that Britain was losing power over America. More Americans =
more American power.

Henry Weeks Sanderson, And Edward Hunter
This is a true story of two men. And while not able to contain their whole lives in a few small pages,
much of their story will be told. The names of these two men are Henry Weeks Sanderson, and
Edward Hunter. Sanderson: a previous member of the Mormon Battalion and mayor of Fairview,

During one of my rambles I went into the pasture, I presume to have a nearer view of the horses or
perhaps to give them a fright to see them run. But a large stallion observing me, and no doubt thinking
me an intruder, took after me with open mouth and I barely sufficient time to make my exit through a
hole in the fence (familysearch.org stories). As is easy to see through this writing, Henry was a vivid
journalist, and He kept a highly detailed journey of his many life events (familypedia.wikia.com).
Another easily pictured experience is shared by Sanderson. During his childhood, at the age when I
first began my rambles, there was a small dog that was my companion and upon one occasion when
we were out together I seemed to have had occasion to crawl through a pole fence, and in doing so the
pole above me was dislodged and falling upon me, pinned me fast, and I could neither retreat nor
advance. The dog seemed to have the sagacity to see that I was in perilous condition and needed
assistance. It therefore went to the house and my it s antics attracted the attention of my mother who
came to my relief (familysearch.org stories). Stories similar to these are very common for the time that
Henry was around, but his colorful descriptions make the accounts much more lifelike and
entertaining. Although much of Henry s life may have contained several typical experiences, several
factors of it make it remarkably different from other children growing up in the

They are trying to blame the fast food industry for their obesity claiming that fast food is a major
contributor to the problem. Tying obesity directly to fast food is a much harder task than tobacco to
cancer, because there has not been any scientific research showing that fast food is the main cause or
that it is addictive. Obesity is thought to be the number one killer in America (Parks), but there are
many factors that contribute to the epidemic such as genetics, exercise routine, environment, illness,
prescriptions, diet, and emotional health.
Obesity leads to a number of diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,
stroke, and certain types of cancer ( NIDDK ). Obesity in it self is a hard health problem for a person
to deal with, but some of these other diseases usually come along in association making the problem
even worse. Certain disease are related more to women than to men. Obese men are more likely than
non obese men to die from cancer of the colon, rectum, or prostate (NIDDK ). Scientific research is
making the cure for cancer easier, but there are still many cancer patients that doctors are unable to
treat. Obese women are more likely than non obese women to die from cancer of the gallbladder,
breast, uterus, cervix, and ovaries (NIDDK ). Cancer is not the only health problem that the body

Voltaire attacks this optimist belief.
He was a deist, a strong proponent of religious freedom, and a critic of tyrannical governments.
Candide became part of his large, diverse body of philosophical, political and artistic works

As Voltaire himself described it, the purpose of Candide was to bring amusement to a small number of
men of wit .[2] The author achieves this goal by combining his sharp wit with a fun parody of the
classic adventure romance plot. Candide is confronted with horrible events described in painstaking
detail so often that it becomes humorous.Candide is primarily, as described by Voltaire s biographer

How Does Immigration Affect The United States Economy Essay

Commerce and Economic Development
November 27, 2016
How does immigration affect the United States economy
Abstract:
Foreign born workers have dramatically increased in the Unites States due to immigration. How does
immigration affect the United States economy can be researched by finding the difference in
productivity and income per worker between states which have large inflows of foreign born worker
and those without many immigrants. Official data shows that states with large immigrant inflows have
higher productive capacity because they can attract foreign and domestic investment. With higher
productivity capacity, worker s wage would also soar. However, some people point out that foreign
born workers are stealing work opportunity from local workers; actually, there is no evidence to
confirm that.
Recent years, more and more foreign people immigrate to the United States by a variety of
approaches. How does immigration affect United States economy is now a hot topic discussed by
economists and ordinary citizens. Many people believe that foreign born workers are thieves who steal
their work opportunities; meanwhile, many people point out that these immigrants are essential for
United States society because many of them are doing the job that local people are not willing to do
such as cleaner and sewer workers. Most economists find no relationship between large immigration
inflows and local worker s employment rate and wage level.

How carbon dioxide can affect the rate of photosynthesis
Aim: To investigate how carbon dioxide can affect the rate of photosynthesis.
Hypothesis: The rate of photosynthesis in the water plant hydrilla will change as the rate of carbon

Background information: Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process of autotrophs turning carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and
oxygen, using light energy from sunlight. Autotrophs are organisms that are able to produce nutrients
and organic compounds using inorganic materials. Examples of autotrophs are green plants, algae,
bacteria, etc. Organisms which are capable to photosynthesize are called photoautotroph. The

Apparatus:
1 beaker
1 lamp
1 ruler
1 transparent plastic shield
1 glass funnel with plastic tubes to let the funnel sink to the bottom of the beaker which stabilizes the
funnel
1 test tube
1 stopwatch
1 spatula
1 jar of sodium hydrogen carbonate
1 balance
1 hydrilla (a type of water plant)
Set up:
Closer look at the beaker: Method/Procedure:
1. Set up: Measure the amount of sodium hydrogen carbonate (2, 4, 6, 8, 10g) to be mixed with water
in the beaker. This is the only independent variable in this experiment.
2. Set up: Measure and pour 650ml of water into a beaker and mix it with sodium hydrogen carbonate
using a stirring rod until all the sodium hydrogen carbonate has dissolved into the water.
3. Set up: Place the beaker in front of a lamp covered with a transparent plastic shield.
4. Recording data: Measure the distance between the lamp and the beaker. It should be 70cm at all
times because it is a control variable. This cannot be changed because light intensity affects the rate of
photosynthesis. If the plant is too close to the lamp, the results would be most affect by light intensity
instead of carbon dioxide and the results would not be accurate. 5. Set up: Choose a hydrilla and put it
into a funnel with plastic tubes and cut the end of the hydrilla s stem to let bubble came out of the
stem when conducting the experiment. Then take it out from the funnel s narrow opening. Place the

  • 3. Personality Characteristics Of Personality Traits In chapter one of the textbook, it describes how to define personality. There is no single definition of the word personality. That is because it is used in so many different ways, and because one word describing someone s personality can be interpreted many different ways. For example, if you describe yourself as a happy person , that could mean something different to another person who also describes themselves as happy . Your personality is an arrangement of personality traits that describe a consistent style of emotion or behavior. Personality traits can be recognizable in various situations of a person s life. A personality trait can be, shy or outgoing those words are describing a daily behavior that, on average, is consistent with that individual. Personality is made up from all different parts genetics, social class, family and peers. The textbook says, some psychologists view the influence of peers on personality greater than the influence of family. (Cervone Pervin, 2013) This is why siblings from the same family have different personalities. Peer groups socialize individuals; they create a whole new set of rules for behavior. This can be seen especially in adolescence. Starting high school is hard, because everyone is trying to figure out where they fit in. When you are that age, you need a sense of belonging to feel complete. The people you find that you fit in with will likely influence the person you will become. I was one of the youngest in my ... • 4. Marshmallow Test According to the article, What Leads to Success in Life written by Jocelyn K. Giel, there are three types of attributes that she states lead to a prosperous lifestyle. Using research produced by Walter Mischel, a Stanford Psychologist, and other scientists, the first quality that she lists is self control, or the ability to make decisions along with resisting worldly temptations. The next characteristics, passion and perseverance, are traits that Giel uses of research conducted by Angela Duckworth, a Harvard researcher, and Duckworth integrated these two attributes and labels them as grit . Grit, according to Duckworth, is the tendency to not abandon tasks as well as not looking for a change , and she draws this statement from personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientists conducted the test to observe the concept of delayed gratification of four year old children. The results concluded that children who were able to resist eating a marshmallow, or treat, for fifteen whole minutes were the ones who led better lives that were more behaved, less prone to addiction, and scored higher on the SAT when re examined during their high school years. While the Giel s article did not provide details concerning the children s upbringing or childhood, it provides a connection to the children who possessed self control and consequently, how their lives are influenced by it. However, Giel expresses later in the article that self control is not the only factor of success and then introduces the two traits described by Duckworth as passion and perseverance, or grit. Duckworth arrived at this conclusion after carefully studying psychologist Catherine Morris Cox s findings on world recognized geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Leonardo Da Vinci. If these people, who are prodigies in their respective fields, all possess these similar attributes, then logic may follow that these qualities may indeed be the key to ... • 5. Popular Support In Julius Caesar Essay Popular support and the distribution of power are two intertwining concepts that are prominent in Nicolo Machiavelli s 16th century treatise, The Prince, and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, of the same era. While Machiavelli s treatise served to provide a practical guide to a reigning prince and Shakespeare s play served to entertain an Elizabethan audience, both composers examine different perspectives of popular support and the distribution of power. The Prince similarly suggests that popular support is essential in achieving power, but prioritises the importance of gaining support from the citizens over the support from nobles. Machiavelli critically analyses the advantages and disadvantageous concerning monarchy and popular support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Caesar s power is distributed amongst characters including Antony, Brutus and Octavian, and as such, his own individual power is weakened, giving Brutus and the conspirators the opportunity to rebel against him. Brutus power is conveyed in Cassius speech in Act 1 Scene 2, where he utilises rhetorical questions including, Why would that name [Caesar] be sounded more than yours? and sarcasm by referring Caesar as Immortal , to undermine Caesar s authority as a ruler. However, while Brutus and the conspirators successfully murder Caesar, Antony and Octavian emerge as the victors at the Battle at Philippi, suggesting that ultimately Caesar s spirit and rule lives in the noblemen who support him. The recurring supernatural imagery of Caesar s spirit in both Brutus tent prior to the battle in Act 4 Scene 3 and on the battlefield conveyed by Brutus in Act 5 Scene 5, suggests that Caesar s spirit not only metaphorically perpetuates but also literally appears in front of Brutus. The fact that the play is named after him despite his death early in the play and not after Brutus, further enhances the idea that the distribution of power from the leader to his noblemen allows the leader s rule to continue beyond his ... • 6. Shakespeare s Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to... Shakespeare s Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero s Journey from Revenge to Reconciliation The Tempest opens on a ship at sea caught in a tempestuous storm . This setting would immediately suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would be familiar with other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for example, Macbeth and King Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene would further reinforce the audience s sense of evil afoot. The panic of the Boatswain is illustrated when he cries A plague upon this howling and the terror of the passengers down below can be heard as they cry Mercy on us! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This very active opening establishes the theme for the play and the audience is left anticipating a story of revenge and evil. In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth, superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda s opening speech suggests that her father has magical powers, if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay them . This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for revenge is not clear at this point. The island s setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda s language contains much dark imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky would pour down stinking pitch has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm. Prospero s expositional speech, which begins on line 36 in Scene II, ... • 7. Shakespeare s The Taming Of The Farew And The Taming Of... ENGLISH The Taming of the Shrew , is one of William Shakespeare s most celebrated works in history and is known to be one of his most comedic pieces of literature. With its lighthearted sense of a late 1500 s Elizabethan era work, the famous play showed many relevant ideologies of society according to its particular era in history. Many of Shakespeare s works have been adapted into successful films that were made to suit the society of a new and different age, for example, his piece The Taming of the Shrew , has been formed into several films and short films. In my opinion, it just shows that Shakespeare s writings are still relevant today and forever will be timeless. The most famous remakes of the of the 1500 s play, were Gil Junger s 1999 adaptation 10 Things I Hate About You , and Franco Zeffirelli s 1967 version of The Taming of the Shrew . Both films show elements of similar society ideologies, such as masculinity and femininity which are portrayed through the main characters; Katherine, Kat, Petruchio and Patrick. Some characters show signs of severe misogynistic characteristics, for example, as the dominant Petruchio tames the dominant Katherine until she is submissive. To help corroborate with this is the quote For I am be born to tame you Kate, And bring you from a wild Kate to a Kate. Conformable as other household Kates. (GAASI), the leading developer of unmanned aeronautical platform technologies (ga asi.com, 2016). As noted on the GAASI website (2016), GAASI has been the premier provider and value chain orchestrator (Mudambi, 2008) of remotely piloted aircraft, also referred to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones, to the United States (US) government agencies since inception of the highly innovative technology in the early 1990s. Reductions in the US defense budget, sequestration and increased competition from other US based UAV platform providers such as Northrup Grumman and Boeing (Hoovers Company Profile, 2016) has slowed GAASI sales to US and European allies in recent years and caused layoff concerns (Shalal Esa, 2013). Issue GAASI is considering entering the growing, but more uncertain India UAV market to offset the reduction in UAV sales to advanced economies. Company Overview GAASI, affiliate of privately owned General Atomics is headquartered in Powhay, California with facilities in the San Diego area and Mojave Desert, as mentioned on the GA ASI website (2016). The parent company, General Atomics, was found in 1955 as a division of General Dynamics (ga.com, 2016). GAASI is the leading, pioneer (Siddiqui, 2015), designer and manufacture of UAV technology. • 12. The Most Important Lessons For Military Leaders Essay War is merely the continuation of policy by other means. Thus, in the sense of Clausewitz, national military objectives have to derive from national policy. The 2015 NMS identifies three National Military Objectives with an integrated approach: to deter, deny, and defeat state adversaries; to disrupt, degrade, and defeat Violent Extremist Organizations (VEOs); and to strengthen our global network of allies and partners. The most important lessons for military leaders for achieving these three military objectives are: how to adhere and adjust the right cause in the realm of Just War Theory before going to war; prepare for the full spectrum of 21st warfare from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operation over counterinsurgency and hybrid warfare to high end war against a state on state adversary. This wicked problem, to prepare for every imaginable scenario with decreasing resources and overall strength, has to be solved by US armed forces, because the political leadership gave it this task. This paper will focus on the most likely future scenarios for US military missions in the near future and provide lessons and recommendations to be successful. Therefore, a short overview of the hierarchical structure of US security documents has to be addressed to understand the three military objectives in the context of political objectives. • 13. Salton Beach Research Paper In the 1950s and 60s, Bombay Beach in California was a thriving resort. Guests swam, water skied, and golfed during the day, then headed to the yacht club to party at the end of the night. Now, Bombay Beach is a faded, rusted, abandoned wasteland. The water smells like salt, gas, and rotting dead fish. The shores lined with sunbathers before, and now they are covered in green sludge and dried fish remains. To understand how this place turned from paradise to agony, you need to know the story of the Salton Sea. Bombay Beach doesn t lie on the west coast, but in the Colorado Desert. In 1905, the Colorado River swelled, penetrated its walls, and flooded the desert valley known as the Salton Sink. The water flowed for two years, then creating a 15 by 35 mile lake named the Salton Sea. The creation of this internal sea was an accident; it was initially emerged to deliver great benefits. Birds flocked to the area, and fish bloomed in the Salton Sea. Developers held the rare setting and selected it the Salton Riviera, or a miracle in the desert. Hotels, yacht clubs, homes, and schools sprang up by the shores, as the Salton Sea became a resort destination and a great place to be. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Queen of Hearts bears similar qualities as a boss in a game; she is the final obstacle Alice encounters before waking up. The Queen is the ruler over Wonderland and is described as a cold hearted, short tempered tyrant. When Alice in the last chapters of the book, meets The Queen, she encounters true fear. It is stated that Alice knows logically there is nothing to fear, since both the Queen and the royal prosecution are simply a stack of playing cards, yet she does indeed feel frightened in The Queens presence. • 16. Bronfenbrenner s Social Ecological Model Introduction The social ecological perspective is seen as a dynamic process in the development of people. The focus of the social ecological model is the interaction between the person and environment. The fundamental assumption is that behaviour is the result of the interaction between individuals and the contexts they are exposed to. (Visser, 2007, p. 103) Personality characteristics and behaviour develop in that interaction process. However psychological and biological factors do play an important role in this process. The personality development is mainly determined by the interaction between psychological, biological and environmental factors. (Moen, Elder, Luscher, 1995) There are various theories about the social ecological development of people. One of them is Urie Bronfenbrenner social ecological model. In this assessment I will be discussing Bronfenbrenners social ecological model and its relevance to my own life. I will explore the ecological model in terms of my own childhood and will discuss the impact it has on the distinctiveness in the South African context. The stories of both great men give us an insight into the way religion and influence affected Puritan life. William Bradford said he believed, Plymouth people were the chosen people to live out their last days in the earthly church (Daly pg 560). Puritan settlers came to the new world seeking a better life and to get away from the rule of the Catholic Church they wanted to become a primitive Baptist church like in the Old Testament. Morton called the drinking and songs with the red and whites harmless and Bradford called the pagan ways. Morton felt that Bradford s, accusations were more from fear of what he did not know and understand and was not truly backed up by fact (Daly pg 564). Could you imagine the kind of world we would have today if everyone spend this much time and effort on who slept with who? I am not saying that people should just sleep around with people like trying on clothes, but unless you are hurting someone just go your own way. Bradford felt that Morton was an enemy against God (Daly pg 565). Bradford called Morton s conduct Lord of misrule , and Morton felt like it was harmless fun (Schoenberg). His maypole festivities smacked of folk superstitions and pagan practices; his consorting with Indian lasses violated their sexual and racial taboos; his hospitality to indentured servants threatened their labor supply and social order; and his trading of guns for furs not only stole the beaver and deerskin trade away but it also armed their deadly enemies, who became a terror unto them, who ... The second triumvirate was formed when the Lex titia was passed in 43BC, making the position of Anthony, Lepidus and Octavian the highest constitutional office in the Roman state. As Scullard stated, In place of the dictator Caesar, there were now three dictators. The second Triumvirate was created to strengthen political control and used their power to legally hunt down those who had conspired to kill Caesar. • 22. Taking a Closer Look at Phisics Physics. Not something you really hear every day. It s not something you really want to hear either, right? Why is it that when we hear the word physics, it s just a major turnoff. People may even hear the word and just think get me out of here , even though they may not have the slightest clue of what it s about. Some people do have a slight clue and think molecules or gravity, atoms or Bohr, laws or life, and still may not quite grasp it, but at least have a slight clue. Others, think wasted time and irrelevance, how it kicked their a** in both high school and college. Then the people who really can t comprehend, think goofy white people. To all of this you could say that people tend to dislike what they cannot understand. Physics. The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. Physics, is what you will be informed of today. As we ve already stated in the definition, physics is the natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through space and time. So first off, matter, the building block of the universe, is any substance which has mass and occupies space. All physical objects are composed of matter, in the form of atoms. Atoms are in turn made up of neutrons, protons, and electrons. Matter also exists in four states: solid, liquid and gas, and plasma; though there are more yet to be proven possible states. Also, all matter is capable of being converted to energy. You might have heard of E = mc2, that would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Accountability Based On Giddens s Structuration Theory Research strategy This study investigates accountability based on Giddens s structuration theory (1984) and assumes that reality is socially constructed (Berger Luckmann, 1969), bounded by time and space, and that individuals are knowledgeable. These assumptions lead to the use of an interpretivist approach (Denzin Lincoln, 2000; Lincoln Guba, 2000; Yanow, 2000) that assumes social reality is multifaceted and difficult to explain using immanent rules (Giddens, 1984; Turner, 1986). As such, sensitizing concepts (Blumer, 1969; Giddens, 1984) that match the underlying assumption of the study will be used instead of definitive concepts. Definitive concepts provide prescriptions of what to see, sensitizing concepts merely suggest directions along which to look (Blumer, 1969, p.148). Giddens (1984) suggests the duality of structure, people s knowledgeability, reflexive monitoring, and time space as sensitizing concepts. Using Giddens s conceptual apparatus to develop and test propositions is challenging and could even be seen as perverse, in light of Giddens s express disavowal of the positivist project of proposing universal laws of society and using a hypothesis testing, falsification approach to assessing their validity. But Giddens s non law sensitizing concepts and attendant conceptual apparatus and elaboration do contain a number of fairly direct propositions (as pointed out by Turner [1986]. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight (verse 25). The king s bodies are then exposed on poles and are left there until evening. How Does Immigration Affect The United States Economy Essay Weilin Ju, Baoxin Yang Dr. Dean He Commerce and Economic Development November 27, 2016 How does immigration affect the United States economy Abstract: Foreign born workers have dramatically increased in the Unites States due to immigration. How does immigration affect the United States economy can be researched by finding the difference in productivity and income per worker between states which have large inflows of foreign born worker and those without many immigrants. Official data shows that states with large immigrant inflows have higher productive capacity because they can attract foreign and domestic investment. With higher productivity capacity, worker s wage would also soar. However, some people point out that foreign born workers are stealing work opportunity from local workers; actually, there is no evidence to confirm that. Recent years, more and more foreign people immigrate to the United States by a variety of approaches. How does immigration affect United States economy is now a hot topic discussed by economists and ordinary citizens. Many people believe that foreign born workers are thieves who steal their work opportunities; meanwhile, many people point out that these immigrants are essential for United States society because many of them are doing the job that local people are not willing to do such as cleaner and sewer workers. Most economists find no relationship between large immigration inflows and local worker s employment rate and wage level. A recent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
