battle strategy previously seen on American soil. However, the Civil War was dragging on and
General William Tecumseh Shermanwas determined to finally end the fighting. The circumstances
that initiated the war created a figurative and literal divide unlike America had ever seen. The
American Civil Wartook heavy tolls on the Union and Confederate States of America. Desperate to
end the bloodshed, President Abraham Lincoln trusted Ulysses S. Grant control of the Army and

well documented throughout his 1864 and 1865 campaign through Georgia, concluding in

Candide, a story written by Voltaire, is a travel literature that takes away women s freedom. This
story talks about the concept of optimism in the characters lives. According to Margaret A. Boden
a man may make no claims, but merely (habitually) describe situations in a positive rather than a
negative way, and the question of justification may not even arise (A. Boden). Women in this story
fail to accept the principle of optimism. This is because everything in their lives is not for the best
as they think. Cunegonde and Pacquette are two main characters that show us in the story why
women fail to accept Pangloss s theory about optimism. Pangloss tries to convince the characters in
the story that everything that happens to them is for the best. Those two women show us why this
cannot be true. They simply live their lives miserably to please the men around them. Voltaire
picked women in this story to present the perspective of rapeand sexual abuse. Women in the 1800s
had very few choices for advancement in life. They could either marry well or they could become

In chapter 8 in this travel literature we read and understand Cunegonde and Mrs. Pacquette s point
of view about refusing the principle of optimism. It is so obvious for Cunegonde to refuse it
because throughout the story the only good thing that happened to her was marrying Candide at the
