Essay on Reflexive Embodied Empathy
Paper for 2005 Methods issue #4 The Humanistic Psychologist
Reflexive embodied empathy : a phenomenology of participant researcher intersubjectivity
By: Linda Finlay
Acknowledgements: My grateful thanks go to Scott Churchill for reminding me to return to Husserl s
work on intersubjectivity to better anchor my concept of reflexive embodied empathy . I am also
indebted to Maree Burns who first drew my attention to the idea of embodied reflexivity.

I call this practice reflexive embodied empathy .
To define and explicate this concept, I start by exploring some of the literature on empathy. There is an
extensive empirical literature on empathy in the fields of neuroscience (see Thompson, 2001) and
social psychology (see Davis, 1994). However, I confine my discussion here to the equally extensive
(though sometimes overlooked) literature from phenomenology. Here, I draw on a range of theoretical
ideas but the philosophical ideas of Husserl (1928/1989) on intersubjectivity and of Merleau Ponty
(1964/1968) on embodiment as intertwining are particularly influential. While the focus in this
literature review is on empathy, concepts related to embodiment and reflexivity are integral.
The literature review is followed by an analysis of the concept of reflexive embodied empathy in
practice. I use three examples of significant moments from various hermeneutic phenomenological
research projects to demonstrate reflexive analysis of my own embodied, intersubjective relationships
with participants. I characterize these moments of reflective involvement with the data as fluid,
interpermeating layers whereby different dimensions of experience are called to the fore. Three co
existing layers of reflexivity are described: connecting of the Other s embodiment to our own acting

All of them are effective and good for the preparation of the business case. Template one from

business needs and outcomes in good manner. Here, executive summary is short and to the point.
Market analysis, risk and sensitivity analysis are done in vivid manner. However, many subheadings
and contents are used in this template. Therefore, it is little bit time consuming on the analysis of the
business case. A business case template two from projectmanagement.com outlines how to carry out
the public private partnership project. The template provides the systematized approach for evaluating
and exhibiting public private partnership project. It exhibits the business needs in great details.
However, financial parts relating to the business dealing, stakeholder and cost analysis is not clear.
Third template from the spice works describes the business case in a simple and straightforward
manner. It tries to emphasis how the business case work, and how it plays vital role in the initiation of
the project. This business case looks good enough to convince management that the proposed project

Communication And Parenting
What is communication? How does communicating relate to parenting?
Communication is when words or conversations are exchanged by more than two person that are able
to get a mutual understanding. Communicating relates to parenting because when a parent talks to
their child, the child is able to respond, and express about how they feel and such. Communicating can
either be through actions or verbal.
How can financial issues affect parenting?
Financial issues can affect parenting because since they are not financially stable, they may need to
work multiple jobs which means they have less time to spend with their child. Spending less time with
a child, can cause a parent and the child to not form a strong relationship since they re never present.

Domestic and External International Factors on African...
Domestic and External Factors on African Macroeconomic Formulation Introduction Growth,
productivity and employment are the most common economic variables to reduce extreme poverty and
break poverty trap. Report from World Bank in 2007 revealed that one percent in GDP growth results
to 1.3% poverty decline in low income countries. Moreover, development in the productive capacity
leads to reduction in sustainable poverty. With improvement in the economic growth, many people
have been removed from poverty during the past few decades in many developing countries. However,
poverty continues to be worsening in the 33% of the world s least developing African countries.
(African Economic Research Consortium 2008). While there are many factors influencing growth,
management of macroeconomic is very crucial to economic growth. Appropriate macroeconomic
policies are critical for wealth creation, sustainable economic expansion and employment generating
investment. Recent improvement in the economic performances of some African countries was
underpinned by the improvement in macroeconomic management. However, inefficient
macroeconomic policies are the features of many African countries leading to the substantial growth
disparities in the African continent. The role of productivity in accelerating growth within an economy
has been widely recognized by the neo classical economic theory. The economic growth of a country
is the sum of the growth of capital accumulation, growth of

Slaves During The Civil War
Slaves went through a lot of struggle to try and get their freedom. They would rebel, runaway, commit
acts of arson but in the end only a war could settle the disagreement of slavery between the North and
South (2). The final battle for the end of slavery or the approval of slavery depended on the Civil war:
the Union against the Confederates. However, what happened to slaves during the Civil war? Well
slaves were permitted to take part in the war. Slaves fought in both sides, over 179,00 African
Americans were part of the Civil war serving in over 160 units (3). Since the beginning of the war
they weren t really permitted to fight in the war, even though they had fought in wars before that one,
because of the 1792 law that restricted them

The Civil War And The American War
The question of what caused the Civil War is debatable because there are several events that may have
influenced the war such as the Western Expansion, Manifest Destiny and the Mexican American War.
The war also stems from slavery, the North and South basically fought over whether or not slavery
should be permitted. Another point that may have influenced the Civil War is the economic and social
structure of the country, which also falls under slavery because the South main source of income was
slavery and the North completely opposed this viewpoint, even though they did not believe blacks and
whites as equals. Another point that may have provoked the Civil War is state rights because each state
would have and the right to decide if they wanted to prohibit Slavery or not. Both Johnson and Zinn
had interesting views Western Expansion, Manifest Destiny and the Mexican American War as it
relates to the Civil War and they both had similar points on each topic. However, Johnson stated that
Americans wanted more land and they were not satisfied after the Louisiana Purchase. This is where
the Manifest Destiny came about to continue the expansion of America. The term Manifest Destiny
was coined by John L. O Sullivan and in the document John L. O Sullivan, Manifest Destiny (1845)
he explained the importance of the expansion. O Sullivan stated that Texas was a part of the union and
it should not be seen just as geographical space and more than just a country but a way to fulfil the

Alicia Saathoff Case Study
In this assignment, I will review the funding proposal of Alicia Saathoff. I am the Committee
Chairperson for the Budget and Finance Committee for the City Council in Columbus Nebraska.
Alicia s funding proposal focuses on a non profit unarmed patrol service named Community Strong.
Community Strong s mission is to provide quality, responsible, and nonbiased protection service to all
Columbus residents by reducing crime and building positive relationships throughout the community.
I will decide if Community Strong will help the city of Columbus as well as provide capital funding to
Alicia s proposal.
Alicia funding proposal is short and to the point. It is a reasonable expectation that an agency be able
to explain what it has done with the money, besides spend it, and explain what the public can expect to
receive from the planned operations of the agency in the upcoming year (Mikesell, 2017, pg. 111).
Alicia s description of Community Strong is excellent. She thoroughly describes what the public can
expect from Community Strong. Her non profit agency will have a prominent presence in Columbus,
reduce crime, and provide additional safety and security to Columbus residents. Her Community
liaison officers will patrol areas by foot and bicycle from the hours of 5 pm to 10 pm and 10 pm to

The Inequality Of Power By Mary Louise Pratt, A Woman Of...
Does the power struggle still exist in the 21st Century and are teacher s encouraging the inequality of
power instead of addressing issues at school?
(Indent)In the past, countries like South Africa experienced a power struggle called the Apartheid.
White South Africans were seen as the Superior race and were allowed privileges that other races were
denied. Being born and raised in South Africa after Apartheid, where it is now called a Democracy.
The power struggle is still just as ripe and evident as it was back then, it is just in reverse. Now the
Black people are allowed privileges and the White people are denied them. It seems like only those in
power; wealth and literacy are heard out and are able to actually make a change. Today, a similar fight
for power is evident in classrooms, work places and all over the world. Mary Louise Pratt, a woman of
the Elite MLAAcademy presented a speech, Art of the contact zone to expose the students and faculty
to the contact zone. Pratt uses a very clever technique by starting off with the story with personal
illustrations and then leaves us dumbfounded by the points her essay makes about the inequality of
power. Pratt s explanation and emphasis about the struggle of power, past and present is completely
true. Although the contact zone is a great idea in terms of power being equally distributed between
people in society is, it s not feasible because people always want to have more power than the next.
The contact zone is a great

1984 Marxist Analysis
ISP Rough Copy
A class struggle between two economic divisions is not just about the distinction and conflict but also
the ideology of dominance that the have s has set on the have not s . The most general way of
understanding economic structure within a literary work is to apply the Marxist Literary Theory.
Marxism is based on the philosophy of Karl Marx, which follows the idea that life within an economic
system is the struggle between social classes. The literary criticism is based on the belief that
historical social and economic conditions determine literary works. Marxist literary theory examines a
text containing a power structure between two groups, the Proletariat and Bourgeoisie, and its
representation. An example of a Marxist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To further explain, the Party entrenches the ideology to remain unquestioned by those capable of
recognizing oppression. According to the Party s slogan, who controls the present controls the past
(Orwell 37). Based on Marxist Literary belief, historical conditions determine human thought, as mind
is a product of it historical influences. The Party dominates their people because history is rewritten in
their favor. As a result, they will remain in power because their people s consciences will
automatically stay devoted under the party without questioning due to insufficient evidence to prove
otherwise. In addition, the Party is also able to prevent rebellion by instilling doublethink into their
people s mind. The technique convinces the brain to believe something to be true when it is not, for
example, 2 + 2 = 5 . The party is successful in maintaining its power due to the practice of doublethink
in which the proletariats are incapable of questioning their position in life: To a Party member it
means loyal willingness to say black is white when the Party discipline demand this (Orwell 221).
Orwell s use of doublethink displays an extreme form of false consciousness. Marxism describes false
consciousness as the inability of the human mind to see things, especially during an exploitation or
oppression for they fail to

Theme Of Enduring Appeal For King Lear
Shakespearian plays like King Lear have enduring appeal because of their universal and timeless
themes.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Support your answer with reference to
the text.
The universal nature of the themes explored in the works of William Shakespeare endow them with
lasting appeal. They feature ideas which are as relevant today as they were in Shakespeare s time, and
this is one of the many reasons why modern audiences are still drawn to plays like King Lear , where
ideas of corruption, power, social inequality and society s attitude toward the elderly take centre stage.
A timeless theme featured in the play is that of corruption within the justice system. Police brutality,
racial profiling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the pursuit of power, Regan, Goneril and Edmund are corrupted and turn to violence and
manipulation to sate their greed and lust. Once they have achieved their goals, they lose what little
empathy they had left, allowing them to justify their treatment of both Lear and Gloucester. Regan and
Goneril employ glib and oily arts to gain their dowries, yet the unflinching devotion they express for
their father in the love test is nowhere to be seen when they humiliate and bully him until he is driven
mad. Edmund similarly manipulates his credulous father and noble brother in order to gain his brother
s inheritance for himself. The unflinching and violent desire for power shown by these characters is a
timeless theme, not just in literature but throughout history, giving the play its continuing appeal.
The gap between the rich and poor continues to widen. In the play, this inequality is revealed by Edgar
who describes the low farms and poor pelting villages that make up the country. This image of the
land is a stark contrast to how Lear saw his kingdom in the opening scene, which he describes as
plentiful, rich and fair . It is only when Lear is driven out into the storm that he too can acknowledge
the reality of life for the poor whose houseless heads are exposed to the elements. The theme

Bam Lyle Heinlein. He read all the science fiction he could lay hands on from the age of 16. He
attended classes at U.C.L.A. for only several weeks, and then left college to take up a career in
politics. After a long grueling trip around the politics department he retired. He soon found, that he
could not stay retired. He had somehow acquired a permanent itch for writing and allowed himself to
be talked back into it. Over a four day period in April 1939, Heinlein wrote the story Life Line. It was,
by the standards of a later day, somewhat stiff, but Heinlein recognized that it was head and shoulders

Heinlein went to work on what he described as the necessary tedium of aviation engineering.
Although he was trained as a mechanical engineer specializing in linkages, his experience with aircraft

aspects of his work was two letters written in the closing weeks of the war, formally urging the Navy
to take up space exploration. One was killed at the Materials Laboratory. The other went up the naval

Lizzie Borden Murder
The Murders in Fall River
On August 4, 1892 at 92 Second Street in Fall River Massachusetts, stepmom Abby and father,
Andrew Borden were slaughtered by an axe in their home ( The Trial of Lizzie Borden ). Lizzie s
biological mother died in 1862, and her father Andrew remarried the spinstress, Abby Durfee Gray.
Since it was a stepmother to be murdered, it raised the question as to if Lizzie really liked her
stepmother. Abby s body was in the guest room, murdered an hour before Andrew, who was on a sofa.
Lizzie, their daughter, was first suspected then convicted based on the evidence. A year later she was
pronounced innocent. What really happened will remain a mystery because someone s word on what

Three days later, on August 9th, Lizzie started to be questioned in the courtroom over police
headquarters. During the first four hours of the examination Lizzie gave confusing and contradicting
information pertaining to where she was and what she was doing. Two days later, on August 11th,
Lizzie was read her rights and arrested by Chief Hillard for the murder of her parents. The following
day Lizzie made a plea of not guilty to the charges against her before being transported by rail car to a
jail located in Taunton, an area located eight miles from Fall River. August 22nd Lizzie was returned
to the Fall River courtroom for her preliminary hearing, after a criminal complaint has been filed by
the prosecutor, next is to determine whether there is enough evidence to require a trial. At the end of
the hearing, Judge Josiah Blaisdell pronounced Lizzie as probably guilty and ordered her to face a
grand jury. From November 15th to the 21st Lizzie faced the grand jury to plead not guilty. It wasn t
until December first, that a testimony was made against Lizzie by a friend of the families. Alex
Russell appeared before the grand jury to make his statement about the blue dress he saw Lizzie burn.
Lizzie responded with the fact that the dress was covered in old paint. The question then is, why was
she burning it the day of the murders? The statement from Russell matched with an earlier testimony
made by Bridget, she claimed Lizzie was wearing a blue dress the morning of the murders. Since both
testimonies matched, it was enough evidence to convince the jury to indict, formally accuse of or
charge with a serious crime, Lizzie for the murder of her parents. On June 5th, 1893 Andrew Jennings
and George Robinson represented the defendant while Knowlton and Thomas Moody argued the case
of the prosecution. Moody opened the case with a two hour long speech while

This upbeat melody takes me directly back to my childhood and all throughout high school. I am a

Kindergarten all the way until my senior year of high school. This song in particular is my favorite
Barbie song because it comes from my favorite movie Barbie and the Princess Charm School. The
reason I chose this as my opening credits is because it exemplifies how every girl is a princess in her
own way. Which alone is a powerful message of its own, as well as sentimental value of youthfulness.

Gender Diversity And Gender Discrimination
Gender diversity and gender discrimination in the tech industry is a highly discussed topic among the
human resources field. Many women continuously feel underrepresented in the field of tech and find
that it is hard to obtain top management positions. This is due to the many problems that women face
while trying to pursue these positions. These problems include overcoming the glass ceiling, dealing
with sexual harassment in the workplace, and women being placed into gender stereotypes.

within the technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personal Reaction The reason why I chose this article was because as a female I found it interesting to
see how women are treated differently due to prejudice in the workplace, especially women who are in
positions of power. In addition, as a woman who would like to work in the corporate business world, I
found it intriguing that a feature as simple as hair colour, can have a major impact on how people
perceive others. As a Muslim woman who wears a Hijab, I have never really faced prejudice based on
my hair, but I have faced prejudice for covering my hair. This sounds contradictory, which is why I
found the article to be of great interest. In addition, since the technology industry is dominated by
men, many people do not see the wrong in what they are doing. Eileen recalls that at a recent party for
software executives, cocktails were served by paid female models, who were dressed like fairies .
Being one of the few female CEOs in the room, Carey says she was in the minority when it came to
seeing the situation as inappropriate and unprofessional (Buckley Butterly, 2017). In addition, another
aspect of the article that made me want to choose it, was how Eileen talks about having choice in the
workplace. With news stories about sexism and gender in the tech industry from Uber to Google
dominating the headlines, Carey says employees must remember they have a choice about where they
work (Buckley Butterly, 2017). These

Post Classical Islam Dbq
During the Post Classical Era, the leadership of Prophet Muhammad aided in the creation of the
religion of Islam. Unlike any other religion, Islam spread exponentially through trade routes,
appealing to the needy and conquest of new areas. As the religion began to gain massive coverage
across Afro Eurasia, it impacted the Post Classical World both politically and culturally. During the
Post Classical Era, the spread of Islam led to significant political effects such as rise of caliphates,
sultanates and empires that expanded to new areas. Furthermore, the spread of Islam had various
cultural contributions such as spread of new traditions and arts. During the Post Classical Era, Islam

Document 3 was written by a renowned Sufi Islamic poet named Rumi, and it was about a mystical
encounter with the divine. Since the author is a dedicated Muslim, it makes sense that he is appealing
to non believers to convert using his art of poetry. Thus, as a result of the spread of Islam, arts like
poetry were enhanced in the Post Classical World. However, Document 4 directly contradicts the
perspective of Document 3 because it de campaigns the cultural contributions of Islam and renders the
spread of Islam as immoral and inferior. Document 4 was written by a Christian ambassador to the
court of Sultan Suleyman, named Ogier Ghislen de Busbecq about his memoirs in the mid 1500 CE. It
makes sense that he depicts the Islamic customs negatively because he exposes the undermining of
women and polygamy practiced in Islamic society. Thus, the spread of Islam diffused Islamic social
customs and traditions such as polygamy. On the other hand, Document 6 corroborates the argument
of Document 3 as it suggests that Islam led to the enhancement of arts such as sciences. Document 6

Betrayal In All Quiet On The Western Front
Has there really ever been a time in your life when everything has been all quiet? No matter who you
are, there is always something on your mind, or something that you have to deal with. There is really
only one way to achieve absolute quiet, and that is by death. War unfortunately gives millions of
people just that. All Quiet on the Western Front is a book that tells a story of young men and their
journey throughout WW1 from the German perspective. Three main points of war that will be
mentioned in this paper are betrayal, horror, and friendship. To begin with, betrayal was a very
prevalent theme in All Quiet on the Western Front. Firstly, an example of betrayal was when the

First of all, the passing down of the boots was a great example of friendship. With each passing of the
pair of boots came even more memories that are shared. It was also like a traditional type of thing
among the soldiers. Also, another time when a tremendous amount of friendship was shown was when
Bertinck stopped the flamethrowers. He sacrificed his own life to save the lives of his fellow squad
mates. Lastly, when Paul carried Kat all the way back to the dressing station was a great example of
friendship. Paul did not care what he had to do to make it back to the dressing station to save Kat. It
was a long and tedious walk for him but they got there eventually. Unfortunately a piece of shrapnel
hit Kat in the back of the head that was unseen, and he died. Thus, friendship was probably one of the
most important things to have during

Animated Sitcom Family Guy By Seth Macfarlane
In the television industry, it is difficult to find a truly successful animated television series that has had
more than three seasons on the air and still currently on the air. Often times, the shows that are
considered outstanding in their content tend to be live action shows. However, this is not the case for
the Seth MacFarlane s animated sitcom Family Guy throughout its 17 year life span. Although Family
Guy has undergone immense scrutiny for its crude humor and inappropriate behavior, it is those same
elements that make the show as humorous and entertaining as it is.
Merriam Webster dictionary defines success as, favorable or desired outcome; also: the attainment of
wealth, favor, or eminence (Merriam Webster, 2016). Family Guy s success on broadcast television
can be contributed to its edgy jokes and cutaway gags delivered by a voice cast portraying a nuclear
family in Quahog, Rhode Island. The family consists of father Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth
Macfarlane), mother Lois Griffin (voiced by Alex Borstein), daughter Meg Griffin (voiced by Mila
Kunis), son Chris Griffin (voiced by Seth Green), family baby Stewie Griffin (voiced by Seth
Macfarlane) and family dog Brian Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane). Macfarlane, who does a
majority of the voice acting by voicing more than 8 multiple characters on the show, is also the
creator, executive producer, and creative consultant of the show (IMDb, 2016). Although he derives
and draws inspiration from successful

Essay on Kurdistan
Kurdistan is a region that has existed in turmoil and is the never was country. The Kurds are the fourth
largest ethnic group of the Middle East, numbering between 20 and 25 million. Approximately 15
million live in the regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, an area they called Kurdistan, yet they do
not have a country of their own. Formal attempts to establish such a state were crushed by the larger
and more powerful countries in the region after both world wars. When the Ottoman Empire collapsed
after World War I, the Kurds were promised their own independent nation under the Treaty of Sevres.
In 1923 however, the treaty was broken allowing Turkey to maintain its status and not allowing the

Apo claims his main goal is the creation of a country for the world s 20 to 25 million Kurds, more
than half of whom live in Turkey, the rest in Iraq, Iran and other neighboring countries. Roughly, a
million are in Europe, in exile or as migrants, the bulk of whom are in Germany. He stated also that he
wanted to put an end to Turkish colonialism and all forms of imperialist domination over Kurdistan.
Turkey has been a key player against the PKK. Geography, politics and history have conspired to
render 30 million Kurds the largest stateless people in the Middle East. The Government of Turkey
has long denied the Kurdish population, located largely in the southeast, basic political, cultural, and
linguistic rights. The government of Turkey has in turn waged an intense campaign to suppress PKK
terrorism, targeting active PKK units as well as persons they believe support or sympathize with the
PKK. As part of its fight against the PKK, the Government forcibly displaced noncombatants, failed to
resolve extra judicial killings, tortured civilians, and abridged freedom of expression. The Turkish
government has also managed to burn over 4,000 villages forcing Kurds to flee from their homeland.
Finally, the Turkish government estimates that the conflict with the PKK has exacted a high financial

Inappropriate use of drugs such as over medicating, use of physical restraints, force feeding, and
physical punishment are also forms of physical abuse (Administration on Aging National Center on
Elder Abuse, 2016). Indicators of elder physical abuse may include bruises or grip marks around the
arms or neck, rope marks or welts on the wrists and/or ankles, or repeated unexplained injuries
(Roberto, 2016). Roberto also states that another indicator of abuse may include the caregiver having a
dismissive attitude or statements regarding the injuries. Another indicator of physical abuse may
include the victim visiting different medical facilities for treatment as an effort to prevent the medical
practitioners from observing a pattern of abuse.
Emotional or Psychological Abuse CDC (2016) states that emotional abuse includes verbal or
nonverbal behavior that results in the infliction of anguish, mental pain, fear, or distress. Tactics of
emotional or psychological abuse include calling names, using insults towards the victim, threatening
the victim, isolation, and control. Indicators of emotional or psychological abuse may include the
victim being emotionally upset or agitated (National Center on Elder Aging, 2016). Additionally, the
victim may show signs of being extremely withdrawn and non communicative or non responsive.

Marriage practices vary across cultures. Every culture has its own way of conducting marriage
according to their traditions and customs. Most cultures share common customs and practices, while

The marriage practices in Indian society have remained relatively constant for a long period
explaining the strength and importance of the institution.
A Comparison of American and Indian cultural Marriage Practices
American Marriage Practices
There are various customs and traditions for marriage in United States based on varying factors such
as culture, social norms, and religion. There are no unique practices because most of practices are
derived from other cultures. The marriage practices and customs revolve around wedding attire, before
wedding, wedding ceremony, reception, and after wedding. White bridal dresses are worn with a veil
in weddings. However, those not wedding for the first time can choose any color of bridal dresses
apart from white. Before a wedding, most have bridal showers where the bride receives gifts from the
guests. Preparation takes considerable time to plan a wedding. In a wedding, groomsmen and
bridesmaids are included (Lilian, 2013). The bride s father walks the bride down the aisle to indicate
approval of the groom. The typical 21st century wedding can now feature a supporting cast of
stepparents, half siblings, Dad s new girlfriend and her kids, the bride s first stepfather and his new
wife, and sometimes even the bride and groom s ex spouses Wedding cakes are used and couples kiss
as a form of endearment. Cakes are seen symbols of fertility. It is a custom for the newly married
woman to

Lineage-Based Perspective
With there being more than 50,000 species of vertebrates alone it is essential for all biology majors to
have a working knowledge of the tree of life. The two perspectives for teaching zoology are the
Linnean taxonomical and the Phylogenetic clade based perspective. The Linnean taxonomical
perspective is a rank based hierarchy while the phylogenetic clade based perspective groups species
by focusing a common ancestor and its descendants. In regards to teaching zoology there is more
value in using the phylogenetic clade based perspective rather than the Linnean perspective because it
allows students to organize the details of biodiversity with a more rational system.
Phylogenetic taxonomy focuses on common ancestry and derived functional ... Show more content on

For example; Coleoptera contains over three hundred thousand species while Primate contains roughly
four hundred species including the human (Ballen, Cissy J., and Harry W. Greene).
This lack of criteria is what causes the exclusion of taxonomic acknowledgment of major evolutionary
innovations while inaccurately portraying history. It is also mentioned in Greene s more recent journal
that the Linnean method fails at specifying clades based upon the origin of limbs in tetrapods and
shelled egg amniotes. While it also, obscures the fact that crocodilians are more closely related to
birds than they are to turtles, lizards, and snakes, which does not highlight many dramatic similarities
between earlier archosaurs (Ballen, Cissy J., and Harry W. Greene). These two main concerns of
omission and obscuration are why the phylogenetic clade based system is a far more valuable and
beneficial methodology for teaching zoology.
As it was mentioned previously, the phylogenetic clade based perspective only recognizes
monophyletic taxa, which are those taxa derived from a common ancestor not shared with any other
group. There is another argument being made that paraphyletic groups should not be included as units
of study within a zoology course. Paraphyletic and monophyletic units of study both have their
benefits and drawbacks however I believe that

Fellowship Of The Ring Essay
Courage and Fellowship
In his film Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001), director Peter Jackson creates the world
of Middle Earth. He uses Characterization, Symbols, Dichotomy, Character Growth, Sound, and
Dialogue to express the theme of Courage and Perseverance. Using these elements the director takes
the protagonist on a perilous journey, and accurately shows one of the most inspiring stories ever
brought to cinema.
Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) of the Shire in the beginning of the movie is a young and spry Hobbit
that has never gone through an ounce of hardship in his life. Peter Jackson uses Dialogue and
Characterization in the opening scene to show this. Frodo is first seen reading from a book until he

Gandalf later explains to Frodo the true power that the Ring possesses and explains that Sauron (the
antagonist) knows that the Ring is with Bilbo at the Shire. At first Frodo says that the Ring must be
hidden away until he learns that Sauron knows of it s location, which leads to the first act of Courage
that we see from Frodo as he accepts the menacing Ring despite knowing the consequences of
carrying it. Frodo accepts the Ring to protect his home and those he holds dear, thus he is beginning
his dangerous journey to become a courageous hero. After barely escaping the Nazgul (An enemy that
is trying to steal the Ring from Frodo), Frodo leaves the Ring to the council and prepares to depart.
The council then cannot decide who shall carry the Ring to Mordor to be destroyed. This leads to a
very important scene in the film. Frodo steps up and says that he will take the Ring to Mordor to be
destroyed. He says that he does not know the way and still courageously accepts the Ring. In the end
Sauron s minions the Uruk Hai find the Fellowship and a battle occurs that rips the Fellowship apart.
This is the most important scene of the entire film, because Frodo then decides to leave alone to
Mordor to destroy the Ring. The director uses

My First Point Motivation Of Writing Courses
Writing skills such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation are important. They are important in many
ways. Writing is how communication takes place. Writing helps you communicate clearly and
effectively. Writing can be taught, but to learn I have to have motivation to write, interest in it, and
practice it. This brings me to my first point motivation.
First writing courses can only sharpen writing skills. Writing courses only build on to what you
already know. I am motivated to write because I know in my future career I will have to do a lot of
writing and do it properly. I learn to write to get pursue the dream job that I want. I find this to be true
because I haven t been writing papers that much, but as I continue to write I am getting better at my
craft. According to Andrew Cowan While a creative writing course can t turn someone into a writer, if
you have ability and are willing to work hard, a course can help you to improve more quickly (Murray
4). I still struggle with writer s block but I learn some tips to help with that from my English
instructor. One of my problems when turning in my paper is constructive criticism. It very stressful

do value my course. We continue to look for the most promising talent in the country, in our
conviction that writing cannot be taught but that writers can be encouraged (Menand 2). Writing can

The Curriculum And Lesson Planning
Teacher Interview During the interview I asked Ms. Mandy questions about the curriculum and lesson
planning. During the summer she works with kindergarten and first grade. When the children go back
to school she works with the younger groups. She is working in a toddler room. For Ms. Mandy a
good teacher is someone who is reliable patient, and compassionate. She also believes teachers should
get down to the child s level and to pay attention to the children s needs in order to be a good teacher.
In Ms. Mandy s workplace they use Creative Curriculum. Creative Curriculum is to teach children to
be thinkers. Teachers will observe and document the child s development throughout the time the child
is in the center. When creating the lesson plans they include the objectives the children should learn
from the activities. To Ms. Mandy the Creative Curriculum is a guideline for her to have
developmentally appropriate practice for her lesson planning. She said that the Creative Curriculum
aligns with the Illinois Early Learning Standards which goes along with the Common Core. From
what I see is that birth through kindergarten the daycare centers use the Creative Curriculum to see
their developmental process and then when the children start heading off to public school. The public
schools use the Common Core to prepare them for college and the workforce. I feel that this is good to
align these two types of tools to help children succeed in school and life. Ms. Mandy said that they

Monody Context
Quetext
About Widget FAQ Contact
The concept of monody was detrimental in the progression of music from the Renaissance era into the
Baroque, shaping operatic arias into what we know them to be. Monody is a musical texture
consisting of a single solo voice, supported by a free instrumental bass line. The voice line is often
simple yet ornate, using embellishments to motivate the ideas of the libretto. Whilst having simple
chordal accompaniment usually played on a lute, harpsichord, guitar or harp the listener can be
focused on the text and meaning of the recitative and aria. Two of the more noteworthy developments
of the transition from the Renaissance era to that of the Baroque, was the step away from choral
music, and the introduction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The piece is about love, betrayal, death and anguish. You can see in Figure 1 the figured bass and
singular bass line. This is an example of baroque notation and the freedom that the accompanist had in
harmonization and improvisation. Another well known solo madrigal of the Baroque era is Giulio
Caccini s 1602 piece Amarilli mia bella from Le nuove musiche. Caccini spent most of his life in
Florence, Italy said to be the heart of Baroque music. He spent a lot of his time as not just a composer
and singer of the Medici court, but also a spy for the youngest son of the Grand Duke of Tuscany,
Pietro de Medici. Caccini was supported by other Florentine nobles, one being Giovanni de Bardi
leader of the Florentine Camerata . Amarilli, mia bella is an emotive song expressing love for the
singer s betrothed, Amarilli. Based on the Greek myth of Amaryllis, falling in love with Alteus, a
shepherd. Alteus, however, is only interested in the mountainside flowers she is picking and says he
can only fall in love with a girl who brings him a new flower. The story goes Amaryllis takes the
advice of the Delphi Oracle, each night waiting on Alteus doorstep, stabbing

The Portland s Water System Essay
I have learned about the Portland s water system in the first of a few weeks. I have learned the
Portland s water resources, water quality management, history of water system, water transportation
system, and water issues in Portland area. Now, I compare Portland s water system to another city in
the United States. I pick up Seattle s water system because I lived in Seattle for two years before I
move to Portland, and I m interested in the Seattle s water system. In this journal, I write about the
following sections: History of Seattle s water system, water resources, water quality management,
water transportation, water issues in Seattle, and conclusion (similarities and differences between
Seattle s water system and Portland s water system). History: In the 19th century, Seattle s water came
from springs, wells, and private water companies. However, the population of Seattle increased in the
late 19th century, and the demand for water supply also increased. In June 6, 1889, there was a large
fire what is called Great Seattle Fire in downtown Seattle. After this event, government decided to
establish municipal water system. After this plan was approved, the government constructed the Cedar
River water system. On January 10th, 1901, water from the Cedar River flowed into Seattle s water
system for the first time. A pipeline channeled water to the Lincoln reservoirs and the Volunteer Park
on Capitol Hill. When the water system constructed, the water system capacity was 23.5

  • 2. Essay on Reflexive Embodied Empathy Paper for 2005 Methods issue #4 The Humanistic Psychologist Reflexive embodied empathy : a phenomenology of participant researcher intersubjectivity By: Linda Finlay Acknowledgements: My grateful thanks go to Scott Churchill for reminding me to return to Husserl s work on intersubjectivity to better anchor my concept of reflexive embodied empathy . I am also indebted to Maree Burns who first drew my attention to the idea of embodied reflexivity. Address for correspondence: 29 Blenheim Terrace, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, YO12 7HD Tel: + 44 1723 501833 Email: L.H.Finlay@open.ac.uk Abstract In this paper I m advocating a research process which involves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I call this practice reflexive embodied empathy . To define and explicate this concept, I start by exploring some of the literature on empathy. There is an extensive empirical literature on empathy in the fields of neuroscience (see Thompson, 2001) and social psychology (see Davis, 1994). However, I confine my discussion here to the equally extensive (though sometimes overlooked) literature from phenomenology. Here, I draw on a range of theoretical ideas but the philosophical ideas of Husserl (1928/1989) on intersubjectivity and of Merleau Ponty (1964/1968) on embodiment as intertwining are particularly influential. While the focus in this literature review is on empathy, concepts related to embodiment and reflexivity are integral. The literature review is followed by an analysis of the concept of reflexive embodied empathy in practice. I use three examples of significant moments from various hermeneutic phenomenological research projects to demonstrate reflexive analysis of my own embodied, intersubjective relationships with participants. I characterize these moments of reflective involvement with the data as fluid, interpermeating layers whereby different dimensions of experience are called to the fore. Three co existing layers of reflexivity are described: connecting of the Other s embodiment to our own acting into the Other s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Communication is when words or conversations are exchanged by more than two person that are able to get a mutual understanding. • 5. Domestic and External International Factors on African... Domestic and External Factors on African Macroeconomic Formulation Introduction Growth, productivity and employment are the most common economic variables to reduce extreme poverty and break poverty trap. Report from World Bank in 2007 revealed that one percent in GDP growth results to 1.3% poverty decline in low income countries. Moreover, development in the productive capacity leads to reduction in sustainable poverty. With improvement in the economic growth, many people have been removed from poverty during the past few decades in many developing countries. However, poverty continues to be worsening in the 33% of the world s least developing African countries. (African Economic Research Consortium 2008). While there are many factors influencing growth, management of macroeconomic is very crucial to economic growth. Appropriate macroeconomic policies are critical for wealth creation, sustainable economic expansion and employment generating investment. Recent improvement in the economic performances of some African countries was underpinned by the improvement in macroeconomic management. However, inefficient macroeconomic policies are the features of many African countries leading to the substantial growth disparities in the African continent. The role of productivity in accelerating growth within an economy has been widely recognized by the neo classical economic theory. The economic growth of a country is the sum of the growth of capital accumulation, growth of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They would rebel, runaway, commit acts of arson but in the end only a war could settle the disagreement of slavery between the North and South (2). The final battle for the end of slavery or the approval of slavery depended on the Civil war: the Union against the Confederates. However, what happened to slaves during the Civil war? Well slaves were permitted to take part in the war. Slaves fought in both sides, over 179,00 African Americans were part of the Civil war serving in over 160 units (3). Since the beginning of the war they weren t really permitted to fight in the war, even though they had fought in wars before that one, because of the 1792 law that restricted them ... • 7. The Civil War And The American War The question of what caused the Civil War is debatable because there are several events that may have influenced the war such as the Western Expansion, Manifest Destiny and the Mexican American War. The war also stems from slavery, the North and South basically fought over whether or not slavery should be permitted. Another point that may have influenced the Civil War is the economic and social structure of the country, which also falls under slavery because the South main source of income was slavery and the North completely opposed this viewpoint, even though they did not believe blacks and whites as equals. Another point that may have provoked the Civil War is state rights because each state would have and the right to decide if they wanted to prohibit Slavery or not. Both Johnson and Zinn had interesting views Western Expansion, Manifest Destiny and the Mexican American War as it relates to the Civil War and they both had similar points on each topic. However, Johnson stated that Americans wanted more land and they were not satisfied after the Louisiana Purchase. This is where the Manifest Destiny came about to continue the expansion of America. The term Manifest Destiny was coined by John L. O Sullivan and in the document John L. O Sullivan, Manifest Destiny (1845) he explained the importance of the expansion. O Sullivan stated that Texas was a part of the union and it should not be seen just as geographical space and more than just a country but a way to fulfil the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I am the Committee Chairperson for the Budget and Finance Committee for the City Council in Columbus Nebraska. Alicia s funding proposal focuses on a non profit unarmed patrol service named Community Strong. Community Strong s mission is to provide quality, responsible, and nonbiased protection service to all Columbus residents by reducing crime and building positive relationships throughout the community. I will decide if Community Strong will help the city of Columbus as well as provide capital funding to Alicia s proposal. Alicia funding proposal is short and to the point. It is a reasonable expectation that an agency be able to explain what it has done with the money, besides spend it, and explain what the public can expect to receive from the planned operations of the agency in the upcoming year (Mikesell, 2017, pg. 111). Alicia s description of Community Strong is excellent. She thoroughly describes what the public can expect from Community Strong. Her non profit agency will have a prominent presence in Columbus, reduce crime, and provide additional safety and security to Columbus residents. • 9. The Inequality Of Power By Mary Louise Pratt, A Woman Of... Does the power struggle still exist in the 21st Century and are teacher s encouraging the inequality of power instead of addressing issues at school? (Indent)In the past, countries like South Africa experienced a power struggle called the Apartheid. White South Africans were seen as the Superior race and were allowed privileges that other races were denied. Being born and raised in South Africa after Apartheid, where it is now called a Democracy. The power struggle is still just as ripe and evident as it was back then, it is just in reverse. Now the Black people are allowed privileges and the White people are denied them. It seems like only those in power; wealth and literacy are heard out and are able to actually make a change. Today, a similar fight for power is evident in classrooms, work places and all over the world. Mary Louise Pratt, a woman of the Elite MLAAcademy presented a speech, Art of the contact zone to expose the students and faculty to the contact zone. Pratt uses a very clever technique by starting off with the story with personal illustrations and then leaves us dumbfounded by the points her essay makes about the inequality of power. Pratt s explanation and emphasis about the struggle of power, past and present is completely true. Although the contact zone is a great idea in terms of power being equally distributed between people in society is, it s not feasible because people always want to have more power than the next. The most general way of understanding economic structure within a literary work is to apply the Marxist Literary Theory. Marxism is based on the philosophy of Karl Marx, which follows the idea that life within an economic system is the struggle between social classes. The literary criticism is based on the belief that historical social and economic conditions determine literary works. According to the Party s slogan, who controls the present controls the past (Orwell 37). Based on Marxist Literary belief, historical conditions determine human thought, as mind is a product of it historical influences. The Party dominates their people because history is rewritten in their favor. As a result, they will remain in power because their people s consciences will automatically stay devoted under the party without questioning due to insufficient evidence to prove otherwise. In addition, the Party is also able to prevent rebellion by instilling doublethink into their people s mind. The technique convinces the brain to believe something to be true when it is not, for example, 2 + 2 = 5 . The party is successful in maintaining its power due to the practice of doublethink in which the proletariats are incapable of questioning their position in life: To a Party member it means loyal willingness to say black is white when the Party discipline demand this (Orwell 221). • 12. Theme Of Enduring Appeal For King Lear Shakespearian plays like King Lear have enduring appeal because of their universal and timeless themes. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Support your answer with reference to the text. The universal nature of the themes explored in the works of William Shakespeare endow them with lasting appeal. They feature ideas which are as relevant today as they were in Shakespeare s time, and this is one of the many reasons why modern audiences are still drawn to plays like King Lear , where ideas of corruption, power, social inequality and society s attitude toward the elderly take centre stage. A timeless theme featured in the play is that of corruption within the justice system. Police brutality, racial profiling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the pursuit of power, Regan, Goneril and Edmund are corrupted and turn to violence and manipulation to sate their greed and lust. Once they have achieved their goals, they lose what little empathy they had left, allowing them to justify their treatment of both Lear and Gloucester. Regan and Goneril employ glib and oily arts to gain their dowries, yet the unflinching devotion they express for their father in the love test is nowhere to be seen when they humiliate and bully him until he is driven mad. Edmund similarly manipulates his credulous father and noble brother in order to gain his brother s inheritance for himself. The unflinching and violent desire for power shown by these characters is a timeless theme, not just in literature but throughout history, giving the play its continuing appeal. The gap between the rich and poor continues to widen. In the play, this inequality is revealed by Edgar who describes the low farms and poor pelting villages that make up the country. This image of the land is a stark contrast to how Lear saw his kingdom in the opening scene, which he describes as plentiful, rich and fair . It is only when Lear is driven out into the storm that he too can acknowledge the reality of life for the poor whose houseless heads are exposed to the elements. The theme ... He read all the science fiction he could lay hands on from the age of 16. He attended classes at U.C.L.A. for only several weeks, and then left college to take up a career in politics. After a long grueling trip around the politics department he retired. He soon found, that he could not stay retired. He had somehow acquired a permanent itch for writing and allowed himself to be talked back into it. Over a four day period in April 1939, Heinlein wrote the story Life Line. Lizzie s biological mother died in 1862, and her father Andrew remarried the spinstress, Abby Durfee Gray. The following day Lizzie made a plea of not guilty to the charges against her before being transported by rail car to a jail located in Taunton, an area located eight miles from Fall River. August 22nd Lizzie was returned to the Fall River courtroom for her preliminary hearing, after a criminal complaint has been filed by the prosecutor, next is to determine whether there is enough evidence to require a trial. At the end of the hearing, Judge Josiah Blaisdell pronounced Lizzie as probably guilty and ordered her to face a grand jury. From November 15th to the 21st Lizzie faced the grand jury to plead not guilty. It wasn t until December first, that a testimony was made against Lizzie by a friend of the families. Alex Russell appeared before the grand jury to make his statement about the blue dress he saw Lizzie burn. Lizzie responded with the fact that the dress was covered in old paint. The question then is, why was she burning it the day of the murders? The statement from Russell matched with an earlier testimony made by Bridget, she claimed Lizzie was wearing a blue dress the morning of the murders. Since both testimonies matched, it was enough evidence to convince the jury to indict, formally accuse of or charge with a serious crime, Lizzie for the murder of her parents. I am a child at heart. Barbie movies have followed me from when I was first introduced to them in Kindergarten all the way until my senior year of high school. This song in particular is my favorite Barbie song because it comes from my favorite movie Barbie and the Princess Charm School. The reason I chose this as my opening credits is because it exemplifies how every girl is a princess in her own way. In addition, as a woman who would like to work in the corporate business world, I found it intriguing that a feature as simple as hair colour, can have a major impact on how people perceive others. As a Muslim woman who wears a Hijab, I have never really faced prejudice based on my hair, but I have faced prejudice for covering my hair. This sounds contradictory, which is why I found the article to be of great interest. In addition, since the technology industry is dominated by men, many people do not see the wrong in what they are doing. Eileen recalls that at a recent party for software executives, cocktails were served by paid female models, who were dressed like fairies . Being one of the few female CEOs in the room, Carey says she was in the minority when it came to seeing the situation as inappropriate and unprofessional (Buckley Butterly, 2017). In addition, another aspect of the article that made me want to choose it, was how Eileen talks about having choice in the workplace. Often times, the shows that are considered outstanding in their content tend to be live action shows. However, this is not the case for the Seth MacFarlane s animated sitcom Family Guy throughout its 17 year life span. Although Family Guy has undergone immense scrutiny for its crude humor and inappropriate behavior, it is those same elements that make the show as humorous and entertaining as it is. It is also mentioned in Greene s more recent journal that the Linnean method fails at specifying clades based upon the origin of limbs in tetrapods and shelled egg amniotes. While it also, obscures the fact that crocodilians are more closely related to birds than they are to turtles, lizards, and snakes, which does not highlight many dramatic similarities between earlier archosaurs (Ballen, Cissy J., and Harry W. As it was mentioned previously, the phylogenetic clade based perspective only recognizes monophyletic taxa, which are those taxa derived from a common ancestor not shared with any other group.
