Crafting an essay on the topic of "MBA Entrance Essay Examples" can be quite challenging,
requiring a delicate balance of self-reflection, strategic storytelling, and a keen understanding of
the specific expectations set by MBA admissions committees. The difficulty lies in the need to
showcase not only your academic prowess but also your unique personal and professional
experiences that make you a standout candidate.
Firstly, one must navigate the fine line between self-promotion and humility. Highlighting
achievements without appearing arrogant and discussing challenges without sounding defeated is
an art that requires careful consideration of tone and language. The essay must resonate with
authenticity and sincerity, allowing the admissions officers to gain insight into your character
and motivations.
Moreover, the competitive nature of MBA admissions adds an extra layer of difficulty. With
countless applicants vying for limited spots in prestigious programs, your essay must captivate
and differentiate you from the pool. This necessitates thorough research into the specific values
and culture of the target institution, ensuring that your essay aligns seamlessly with their
expectations and ethos.
Structuring the essay is another intricate task. Balancing the introduction, body, and conclusion
while maintaining a coherent and engaging narrative is crucial. Each section must contribute to
the overall theme of why you are an ideal candidate for the MBA program. The challenge is to
present a compelling story that unfolds logically, emphasizing your unique strengths and
experiences.
Additionally, the essay must adhere to stringent word limits. Condensing a lifetime of
achievements, aspirations, and experiences into a concise piece requires meticulous editing and
prioritization. Every word must serve a purpose, adding value to the narrative without
unnecessary verbosity.
In conclusion, crafting an MBA entrance essay is no small feat. It demands a thorough
understanding of oneself, the target institution, and the ability to communicate effectively within
tight constraints. Successfully navigating these challenges can significantly enhance your
chances of securing admission to a top-tier MBA program.

2. Idealism And Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius
Berkeleyan Idealism and Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius
Jorge Luis Borges short work of fiction titled Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius grapples
with many philosophic issues. In the main, this short story deals with the philosophic
notion of subjective idealism as posed by George Berkeley s Treatise Concerning
Principles of Human Knowledge. Within this essay I argue that, while he
acknowledges the presumed irrefutability of Berkeley s argument, Borges Tlön,
Uqbar, Orbis Tertius aims to disparage both totalitarianism and Berkeleyan idealism
by drawing an analogy between the two via his literary creation of the fictitious
world of Tlön.
The notion of subjective idealism, within western philosophy, is credited to the 18th
century philosopher George Berkeley. In his most notable work regarding this system
of metaphysics, a Treatise Concerning Principles of Human Knowledge, Berkeley
holds that nothing exists outside of the immaterial ideas within minds. Esse est
percipi or to be is to be perceived (Berkeley,11). Berkley s form of subjective
idealism is able to avoid the problem of solipsism by his holding that the totality of
perceived ideas reside in the mind of God. This monistic system of metaphysics
runs contra to the earlier works of Locke and Descartes whose relative theories
assumed a dualist stance concerning metaphysics. The philosophic relevance of
subjective idealism is conveyed by Borges in Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, when he
cites David Hume who held that
3. You re Ugly By Toni Morrison Essay
What makes an interesting and impactful novel often revolves around conflict,
obstacles, and adversity and how the characters within the fictional universe cope
with or triumph over these challenges. The manner in which characters choose to
interact with adversity in their own ways enlightens who they are as a character
and can help illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. The character of Sula
in Sula by Toni Morrison as well as the character of Zoe in Lorrie Moore s You re
Ugly, Too both face the adversity of isolation through sexual and social rejection,
but they handle it in radically different ways. Sula challenges this adversity by
facing it directly, experiencing and therefore empathizing with and respecting the
possessive relationship she is trying to avoid. Conversely, Zoe deals with this
adversity in the same way she always has, barricading herself from growing as a
character. Through their interactions in the face of their own adversities, these
characters reveal a central message that dropping what is expected of one s self
sexually will eliminate isolation and perhaps lead to a healthy relationship. A large
source of adversity that both Sula and Zoe face is sexual failures, which leads to
social and societal rejection. In Sula, Sula is characterized by her lack of adherence to
conventional sexual norms. She subscribes to a personal philosophy that she must be
free, that a monogamous relationship is boring and restricting and she must reject
that to remain
4. Belonging Of A Sisterhood Of Arms
Belonging to a Sisterhood of Arms
Despite having been involved in the military since the American Revolution, women
are most often overlooked as being a soldier. While many people think it is
respectful to go up and thank a person for their service and duties in the military,
most often they insult women by not acknowledging them as a soldier, because
society still sees military personnel as a male based society. There is a fallacy to this
stigma.
Almost anyone can point out a man who is in the service, whether or not he is in
uniform. Although it may not be easy to tell that I was a soldier in one point in
time. The main reason is, is because I am a woman. There are not many physical
attributes for a female that gives any tell tale signs like a person would see with a
male member with his high and thigh hair cut and freshly shaven face. The only
sure way to know that I was a soldier is if I had said so, or if I was seen wearing one
of my uniforms with my hair tied neatly in a low bun; however when I am in my
civys (military term for civilian clothes), it s almost impossible to tell unless one
is very observant in human behaviors. Another way to tell how a woman may be a
military member is how we talk; we usually use military jargon such as female
/male , using the NATO alphabet, FUBAR (F*** Up Beyond All Recognition) ,
and many others we may find reasons to use in our civilian lives but can only find a
military term to express how we feel about it.
Another way we can be
5. The Anglo-Saxon Generation
Imagine fifty years or more from now, when the modern American civilization would
cease to exist. What would that generation think of this generation? What would be
left for them to examine and infer about this generation? Artifacts and burial sites
are one of the many treasures of the past that archaeologists use to help them figure
out what the past generation was like. What if all they saw were very violent
movies? Would they think that this generation was one that was ruled by violence?
Archeologists have found remains of the earlier societies, like the Anglo Saxons, and
they can infer what the society did and valued. Based on the poem From Beowulfand
the artifacts found in their burial site, people can infer what the upper class Anglo
Saxonswere like.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This bonded their community and made it more sturdy and long lasting. When
Beowulf died, his warriors [placed] his ashes, along all of the dragon s treasure, in a
huge burial tower by the sea, where it can be seen by voyagers (From Beowulf 49,
1). Gold was an important valuable since their greatest king was buried with the
dragon s mixture of gold and other valuable treasures. Anglo Saxons valued strength
and their warriors so much that their kings showered [their warriors] with tons of
bling swords, armor, rings, you name it (00:48 00:49 www.shmoop.com, 2). Since
they valued gold and wealth, getting inexhaustible amount of gold and other
extravagant objects that the kings might have given them were a big deal. Overall,
the Anglo Saxon s had many values within their culture that without most of them,
the society and its artifacts might not have lasted for so long. The artifacts and poems
that they have left behind for the generations that have formed after them could see
what kind of civilization they were. According to the remnants, they mostly valued
loyalty, strength, and wealth. Those are the morals and ethics that kept the society

There are many Church of Christ, Scientist spread around internationally. The First
Church of Christ, Scientist was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 in Boston,
Massachusetts. Ms. Baker was an Influential Author as well as a religious leader.
During her time she published Science and Health along with launching The
Christian ScienceMonitor . Thus inspiring people to become a part of her new
profound Church.
Around February 5,1920 a Christian Science Society was organized by friends in
McAllen, Texas who gathered at private homes. Meetings were continued, but as
time passed they began renting rooms, facility s, where services would be made
more public. Their services consisted of getting together on any day they were
available since set days nor times were yet to be spoken of. A year later By Laws
were adopted on January 12, 1921 and the first Wednesday evening testimony was
held yet another year later, on February 8,1922. Sunday School was finally
established in 1923 as well as the first Christian Science Lecture and Thanksgiving
Day service. In 1927 the Society was organized into a church in McAllen, Texas. An
application was made to the Mother Church in Boston, and on July 1 the Board of
Directors granted the request. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

7. Analysis Of The Poem Harlem By Langston Hughes
In the poem Harlem by Langston Hughes, Hughes discusses the fate of the
American dream and more specifically, he questions us about the destiny of the
dream that never gets realized. He wonders whether it explodes violently or if it just
dries up. Forty years later, Tony Kushner explored the fate of the suppressed,
exploding dream in Angels in America through the character of Joseph Porter Pitt as
he struggles to cope with his own repressed, but surfacing homosexuality, while also
balancing societal and religious perspectives that restrain his true dreams.
Furthermore, Joseph s true self has been repressed deep into his mind and covered
with conservative opinions, a fraudulent marriage, and religious manipulation. All of
which, are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Joseph s conservative shield serves as a layer of ignorance that blocks out the
community in which he truly belongs to, which is the homosexual community. His
non existent acknowledgement of the struggle, fear and pain that the homosexual
community was going through at the time is a reinforcement of a falsified dream
that Joseph has. Virtually, his cluelessness of the AIDS epidemic means that he
doesn t see himself at risk, he see s himself as pardoned from the tragedy as most
straight men did during that time. Additionally, the epidemic brought the homosexual
community together, and empowered them. Joseph, who I m sure has heard of the
epidemic before the play even begins, doesn t feel a sense of connection to that
community at all nor does he show any signs of empathy. He is left out of the coming
together of the homosexual community and doesn t care because of his
denial. Moreover, Joseph ignores that homosexuals exist and although he does not
completely deny the fact that he is gay in the play, he essentially ignores the reality of
himself as a gay man.
Also, Joseph s language with Harper is mostly centered around change, even though
he has a misperception about the world s current status, he is focused on making a
change to his life. He wants to move at the beginning, but only if Harper agrees to go
with him. Joseph

Preface In our data analysis we do some univariate analysis before proceeding to
models. In survival analysis it is highly recommended to look at the Kaplan Meier
curves for all the categorical predictors. This will provide insight into the shape of
the survival function for each group and give an idea of whether or not the groups
are proportional. We also consider the tests of equality across strata to explore
whether or not to include the predictor in the final model. For the categorical
variables such as marital, eservice, plusservice and totalservice we use the log rank
test of equality across strata which is a non parametric test. For the continuous
variables such as age, address, income, education, employment, and reside we use a...

status is altered from married to unmarried, while holding all other variables

9. Citizen Journalism
Joan Cornell notes that the Internet democratizes the journalism which was in the
hand of the few people (2003). The Internet makes the public access to information; at
the same time, it creates the public to be journalists, opening blogs to put something
new around on the Internet. Many news websites like The Guardian, the Washington
Post, CNN and MSNBC allows some personification. The journalismnowadays is
facing challenges not only from media and technology convergence, but also from
audience they serve (Bowman and Willis 2003). For example, in MSNBC s my
MSN part, one can post news by yourself. While the audience are participating in the
process of journalism with the aid of the Internet, it cannot be neglected by
mainstream media.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No matter what the result is, Media Matters makes its effort to make the public
access to more information. The public get the rid of being directed or being
controlled by traditional mainstream media. The long established trust that audience
give to the traditional media has been broken, leading the audience to get the rid of
being passively receivers (Bowman and Willis 2003).
Citizen journalism challenges the traditional statue of mainstream media, providing
the public alternative access to more information. This gives the public the choice to
select news and to become active news receivers.
Interactivity
The involvement of citizen journalism not only democratizes the media industry, but
it serves as a new added intermediary rather than ultimate authority to connect
audience and information access (Bowman and Willis 2003: 49). A new
relationship between journalists and audience has been created, with comment as a
link following the article. For example, Deborah Hobson (2011) in OMNI posted a
piece of news article originated from the latest.com, UK citizen journalism site
exposes hypocrisy of British media over Libya bombings . Four readers left long
comments to this article. Whether agree or disagree with the opinion the article
represents, these readers all provide reasons to support their opinions, which have
changed the stereotype thoughts about readers who just passively
10. Anomie Strain Theory
In this essay I will be outlining and discussing the ways in which anomie and strain
have contributed to the understanding of crime and criminal behaviour. I will be
using the anomie and strain theories to discuss crime and the development of
criminology. Within criminology there are many theories which try to explain the
changes in society caused by crime and criminal behaviour. Deviant behaviour is
described by theories as, any behaviour that goes against the norms of society.
There are many theories which try to explain how behaviour is classed and why
people take part in it. These are biological, psychological and sociological. There
are biological and psychological contributions to crime which try to explain the
reasons for criminal and deviant behaviour in our society. Biological explanations
for crime and deviancy are that all criminals and deviants have a certain look and
they look different from non criminal people in society. This explanation claims
that how someone looks can explain their chances of becoming a criminal.
Inheritance of certain genes in their makeup can make them more likely to be
involved in crime and be a negative impact on society. There are also psychological
explanations for crime, these say that criminals have different minds to regular
people, different personalities can be more likely to be involved in the deviant
behaviour which causes problems in society. It also says that certain childhood
experiences and the influences they have had

12. Community College Is A Little Out Of Place
One question that I am often asked after introducing myself is but why are you
here though? For many people that I ve talked to, the thought of a Wisconsinite
moving to Michigan for community college seems a little out of place. For most
people, community college is something that is done before moving to another
state for college, not after. However, this was not the route I was destined to take, and
it payed of to be one of the best ones of my academic career, even if it does come of
as a little strange.
If there were one thing that shapes my identity the most, it would be my home. For

One possible beginning stems from my time spend at our said family cabin in the
Northwoods of Wisconsin. Where I could be found spending time reading an atlas
for fun as the calming sounds of crickets, and loons echoed in the distance. Besides
my academic interests, many of my hobbies also came into being there. Whether
that be in the form of ukulele playing, reading, photography, or one of my personal
favorites trying new foods (especially of the ethnic variety), they all exist thanks in
part to America s dairyland. My passion for photography, for example, all began
one summer day three years ago when I picked up my Dad s Nikon camera, and
began taking pictures as I hiked through our forty acre property. This is a passion
that continues to this day, and one that I am excited to pursue more while I am here
in Michigan. Which brings me to another part of my story, the move here itself.
My Dad was originally from the Jackson area, and for the longest time I had
absolutely no idea where that even was (well besides a rough geographical area
from a finger pointing on to a spot on his palm.) While I lived in Wisconsin, we
barely had time to visit Michigan. Often times only visiting once every few years,
usually around easter. Before the move I barely even knew my relatives in Jackson,
besides the correspondence of a birthday letter, or the occasional phone call. This all
changed, however, one summer day when my Dad sat my sister

eighth grade students would love to go to Lava Bed National Monument. It would
also be like a science field trip too, because our science teacher could teach us about
the natural volcanoes at the huge national monument. I think many students would be
excited to wander in the dark caves, because they might find a huge variety of things
they never seen before. I bet that many of the students would have an astonishing

15. Key Themes Of Political Power In Machiavelli s Richard II
Political power does not come from an army, or a full treasury. Instead, it comes
from the subjects, or the people. If the people like a ruler, or leader, it gives them
power to act, largely, however they please, but, if the ruler is not well liked, not
only does the ruler lose the ability to act, even within the law, but they are much
more likely to lose their throne. Throughout Richard II political staging is a means
to obtain power, both successfully, and unsuccessfully. In doing so, it reveals the
identity of the characters and how they view the world and their place in it. It also
demonstrates the problem that power presents, and how it can be hard to wear a
political mask, and retain something that is fundamentally individual. In
Machiavelli s The Prince, he outlines and ideal ruler, and how they would act, and
the best ways to seize power. One of the key themes that underlies this work, is that
power comes from the people, not divine right, or inheritance. This question of
where power comes from, is also present in Richard II, and it plays out both
literally and intellectually within the play. Power from the people, plays out
literally in the play, when Henry, works to win people over, so that he can
overthrow Richard. Later on in the play, Richard realizes that power comes from
the people and not from divine right, and realizes that he has screwed up, and lost
the bit of power that he did have. Machiavelli also discusses the importance of
appearances. For example,
16. The Environmental Justice Case, Maynas Carijana Vs....
It is important that achieving environmental justice becomes an aim that is universal.
This is because minorities and those with a lower socioeconomic status bear the
burden of environmental hazards. Environmental hazards can impact the quality of
the air, water, and land. Exposure to these environmental hazards can occur through
inhalation, ingestion, and absorption. Thus adverse health outcomes may result.
Because minorities and those of a lower socioeconomic statustypically bear the
burden of environmental hazards, they are at an increased risk of adverse health
outcomes. This is especially harmful to vulnerable populations including children and
the elderly. This is seen in the environmental justice case, Maynas Carijana vs....

Because it is a California based company, this suit included non compliance under
California s Unfair Competition Law. The case was originally dismissed by the
federal court as they believed the trial should be heard in Peru. However, the plaintiffs
were able to successfully appeal this decision to the Ninth Circuit, and a trial was held
in the U.S. court system (Earth Rights Org). The plaintiffs included Achuar
community members that were directly impacted by Occidental Petroleum. In
addition to Earth Rights, the plaintiffs were represented by Schonbrun DeSimone
Seplow Harris and Hofman, a firm in Southern California, as well as Natalie

Achuar community members that their practices for extracting oil were safe. It is
believed that they purposefully
17. Counseling Skills Essay
The three concepts I have chosen to identify for this book report assignment are,
basic empathy, motivation, and reframing. I feel that those concepts are important for
counsellors to have as skils.
The first concept i will be discussing is empthy, which is discussed in Chapter six
(Shebib, 2003). Empathy is the ability to correctly interpret another person s feelings
to show them you understand. So, empathy is not something we have, but something
we do. Empathy is a skill and an attitude and not a feeling (sympathy is a feeling). It
is about being able and willing to understand another person from their own point of
view, without your own thoughts, feelings, opinions and judgements getting in the
way of this understanding. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
CLIENT: Yeah very frustrated and mad that she s hiding from me.
COUNSELLOR: It sounds like you would like this frienship to work out. (In triad
quote, 2006)
As you can see from this example, the counsellor has summarized expressed feelings
from the client.
The second concept I will be discussing is motivation, which is one of the five
empowering activities discussed in chapter seven (Shebib, 2003). Motivation is an
important concept when it comes to counselling because it can lead into change for
the client. A counsellor is key for inhibiting change in a client, but most importantly
the client has to involve their commitment in the change they would like to see.
According to Shebib (1993) Change is stressful because it requires giving up
established patterns of behaviour or thinking, and clients will differ in the extent to
which they have the skill or energy to take the associated risks (p.196). Also, there
are many problems associated with movitating clients such as: lazy clients, clients in
denial, involuntary, ambivalent, energized, and burnt out clients. Counsellors need
to be aware of those problems because counsellors need to apply a variety of skills
to help the different types of problem clients when the time arises. An example of
how I, the helper, used motivation within a session is shown below. My client at the
time of this session would be considered a engergized client because the client is
already motivated

Kentucky couple gets divorced are they still brother and sister? The lists of redneck
jokes surrounding Kentuckystereotypes are endless. Many people get a good laugh
out of the jokes, but they don t realize that they are portraying a crude message about
all Kentucky folk. More so than any other state, Kentucky is labeled and illustrated
as redneck and poor. Much of this may stem from many of the small towns in
Kentucky and in the Appalachian area. However, Appalachiahas been misunderstood

I took a keen liking to mine especially. I was in tattered, patched overalls, too short
for my parched legs. I had one sandal and a tennis shoe with no socks. Because I

On June 25, 1876 in central Montana, off the banks of Little Bighorn, George
Armstrong Custer and his battalion, defeated by the overpowering force of Sioux
and Cheyenne warriors, surprised a nation who had believed that the army was well
prepared and had no doubts of the victory sure to come. A nation determined to take
over the Western Plains despite the people already living there, they saw the native
people as an obstacle to their progress and as a consequence needed to be removed.
Even though the battle at Little Bighorn was a direct result of the United Statesneed
and desire to expand westward, the conflict that arose due to these aspirations
between the army and the Indians would contribute to the growing tension over
disagreement of the land and treatment of the natives.
Due to the overflow of the immigrant population in the East, many white people
began to migrate west. Following the discovery of gold in the West, whites began to
move in large numbers through Lakota territory encountering Indians whom they
were never told about. With the construction of forts to protect the Bozeman trail the
Lakota people, led by Red Cloud, were determined to cease the invasion of whites
into their land. The Indians began to kill anyone that was not a part of their tribe,
leaving their bodies where they fell to be devoured by the wild animals. As a result
of these raids and killings the U.S. government signed the Laramie treaty, granting the
Lakota a large territory that would
20. Symbolism In Minister s Black Veil
The color black has a huge meaning in Minister s Black Veil. It is a symbol of sin
and regret. Black usually represents dark times in your life or mistakes you have
made. This black veil is a symbol of secret sin and how bad the human race can be.
Hawthorne uses a black veil to show that everyone in the Puritan Society has
sinned at some point, even the minister. The puritans claim to be pure, however, in
Hawthorne s story he shows that we have all made mistakes that we will have to
live with forever. You always have to live with your mistakes and sins even if you
are the only one who knows about them. I believe that everyone in today s time has
secret sins that they know of in their hearts. Not everyone is willing to admit it and
show it
21. plural executive branch Essay
POS221 Lesson 3 Short Answer
1. Arizona has a plural executive. Identify each of the constitutional officers
included in Arizona s plural executive in order of succession, as well as the two
positions not included in succession. Finally, choose one position and explain at least
two of the position s duties and how the position could affect your daily life.
A plural executive branch means that no single person has all the power and all
officials are elected to their position. Most states have this process which differs
from the country as a whole who only one has elected official, the president, and then
appointed officials to support him/her. There elected members of the Arizona

In order for an individual to become an elected official on the executive branch
there are some specific requirements that must be met. The individual must be 25
years of age or older, are a 10 year citizen of the United State and a 5 year resident of
Arizona. There are two offices that require further requirements, they are the attorney
general and the state mine inspector. The attorney general is required to meet all the
minimum requires as well as two additional requirements. One of the additional
requirements is that the attorney general has to be qualified and admitted to the
practice of law before the Arizona Supreme Court. This means that the individual
elected to this office must have pasted the state boards for legal qualifications.
Another additional requirement for the attorney general is that they cannot be in
private practice during the term they are serving. These are two very important
additional qualifications that the attorney general has to have. The citizens of the
state would not want just anyone to be able to act as the attorney general. What if
someone with no law qualifications was elected to office? They would not
understand the duties of the job and what is legal, ethical and just. It is also
important that the attorney general not be in private practice during the term they are
serving because that could pose a
22. The Drug Of Drug Testing Welfare Recipients
Drug Testing Welfare Recipients To test or not to test has been has been the
question at hand for many states that are dealing with whether or not to pass the
law that welfare recipients should or should not be drug tested in order to receive
assistance from the government. Florida was the first state to mandate the law in
2011 and thereafter twenty four other states in the last year have also passed this
law in our own state of Oklahoma being one of them. Although alcohol is legal it is
abused far more than marijuana or hard core drugs, According to the 1996 study by
the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism the differences between the
proportion of welfare and non welfare recipients using illegal drugs are statistically
insignificant. Although some states have decided to pass the law for welfare
recipients in order receive government assistance, I believe it s ineffective to drugtest
these welfare recipients in order to receive their benefits. Welfare in the United States
commonly refers to the federal government welfare programs that have been put in
place to assist the unemployed or underemployed. Help is extended to the poor
through a variety of government welfare programs that include the Women, Infants,
and Children Program, which is referred to as WIC, Medicaid, and Temporary
Assistance to Needy Families commonly known as TANF and Aid to Families with
Dependent Children. Drug testing welfare recipients is negative because drug tests
performed on welfare
23. Sister Carrie Character Analysis
In Sister Carrie, Dreiser uses very detailed descriptions of characters and their
appearance. These are not empty descriptions, each description of the clothes is so
convincing that it plays with the readers senses allowing them to visualize a
dynamic cinematic picture (Stankovic 79). For example, Carrie s total outfit
consisted of a small trunk, a cheap imitation alligator skin satchel, a small lunch in
a paper box, and a yellow leather snap purse, containing her ticket, a scrap piece of
paper with her sister s address in Van Buren Street, and four dollars in money
(Dreiser 1). Such a description describes a person who is leaving in a rush with
little money and only a scribbled address, but someone who longs for more, as the
imitation alligator skin satchel suggests. She wants to convey a bit of wealth in
her appearance and impression even though the bag is imitation. Each of these
men become the lovers of Carrie in the novel, and she was drawn to each of them
by her impressions of their appearance, but first impressions can be wrong and
appearances can be falsely portrayed. Carrie first succumbs to Drouet, becoming his
mistress acting falsely as his wife. She is later drawn to Hurstwood because of his
appearance. When Carrie meets her lover Drouet, and later Hurstwood, she compares
them, measuring their financial situation by looking at their clothes (Stanovic 81).
Notice that Carrie describes Drouet s business look as appealing, but Hurstwood s

How does the Sofia Coppola, in The Virgin Suicides, use a range of stylistic features
(film techniques) to display the movies themes and with what effect on the audience?
INTRO:
Director Sofia Coppola uses a range of film techniques to display themes of
obsession, the superficiality of vision and isolation from the real world in her film
The Virgin Suicides. Through use of symbolism, characterization, setting and
techniques specific to a film such a soundtrack, Coppola is able to construct the
intricate, mysterious and unfathomable world of the Lisbon sisters. The story of the
five sisters, told through the eyes of a group of neighborhood boys obsessed with
their mere existence, becomes somewhat of an urban myth. Their tragedy ... Show

THE SUPERFICIALITY OF VISION:
The superficiality of vision is a theme that is evident throughout Sofia Coppola s
The Virgin Suicides. The film, set in suburban America in the 1990 s, emulates the
need for facades and the importance of keeping up appearances . The character of
Mrs. Lisbon in particular, is one that represents the need for conformity throughout
the film. Mrs. Lisbon values the importance of appearances above all else and aims

26. Separation Of Powers And The United Kingdom s...
This essay is aimed to focus on and examine the importance of having a separation of
powers and the reasons for having same in the United Kingdom s constitution. We
shall further look into the structure of the United Kingdom s constitution whilst
assessing its somewhat unclear separation of powers which exist and assess the
reasons why the United Kingdoms system of government does not adhere to the
doctrine of the separation of powers. The separation of powers is defined as the
political doctrine of constitutional law under which the branches of government are
divided to prevent an abuse of power. These three branches are the Legislative,
Executive and Judicial and are assigned special powers to maintain a check and
balance on each other. In this essay, we shall further go on to discuss the roles and
functions of each of the mentioned branches of government and the extent to which
this defined separation of power is enforced and/or practiced in the United Kingdom s
system of government taking into account the traditional structure that has been
maintained over the years.
Aristotle states, There are three elements in each constitution ...first, the deliberative,
which discusses everything of common importance; second the officials; and third,
the judicial element. These three elements as defined by Aristotle are now known as
our Legislative, Executive and Judicial arms of the United Kingdom s system of
government.

the congressional representatives. This has a great impact on foreign policy.
However, the powers have changed over time.

29. Analyzing Hadoop Framework Is A Solution For Big Data
Problem
Abstract Hadoop framework is a solution for big data problem. In a large cluster,
thousands of servers both host directly attached storage and execute user application
tasks. Big data is only not about storing the data, it is also about execution and
analyzing of data.
Keywords Hadoop, big data, Map Reduce, Name node, Task tracker.
I.INTRODUCTION
Hadoop it is not a language or technology, it is a frame developed by Yahoo and
maintained by apache for big data problem. Data in the web, internet will be of
different formats. Data will be of image, text, media files. Data can be of many
structured, unstructured and semi structured formats. In the current world than static
data, the streaming data is more and capturing it is a challenge for today s world.
II.BIG DATA
Before jumping into Hadoop I like to discuss, I like to discuss why big data? And it
characteristics and challenges.
What is big data? In late 2000 the world in running on manual data, people use to
update records in books and files. In 2000 many small companies converted there
regular business structures into computer systems. And data started floating due to
increase in the system usage.
Characteristics of Big data:
The four characteristics of big data are volume, velocity, variety and veracity[1].
Volume is the amount of data generated. The speed of data generated is velocity,
Variety refers the format or types of data generated. Veracity is considered as
uncertainty of data. Figure 1: The 4 V s
30. The Separation Of Foam Separation
Foam separation techniques are neither much widely used nor much research have
been done in this area lately. But due to the high selectivity, thermal stability and the
ability to separate components from very dilute solutions (as low as 10 10 mole/liter),
it is worth being applied as modern separation and purification techniques. Particulates
that are to be separated from solution are associated with surfactants and are adsorbed
at the liquid air interface. Interaction energy between the nonpolar hydrocarbon
chains of the surfactantand the polar water molecules is less than the interaction
energy between water molecules themselves leading to organic molecules in bulk
water to be energetically less favorable than their presence out of the bulk water at the
interface. Foamfractionation, ionic flotation, molecular flotation, microflotation, froth
flotationthese diverse types of foam separation techniques allow the separation and
purification of a wide variety of components starting from detergents to heavy metal
ions and proteins.
Gibbs adsorption isotherm, Young Laplace equation, Langmuir isotherm control the
separation parameters. The easy apparatus setting and simplistic separation process
leads to its utilization in analytical purposes and economically feasible industrial set
up. Various variables like ionic strength, length of chain, concentration of surfactants,
Solution hydrogen concentration, flocculants, concentration of complexing ions,

32. Summary Of The American Pageant By Howard Zinn
After reading a chapter of The American Pageant by David Kennedy, and a chapter
of A People s History of the United States by Howard Zinn, both discuss the
beginning of the revolution in the colonies. Zinn approaches the information with
great detail and analysis of the colonial revolution. Kennedy does not succeed in
this, he often contradicts himself, and lacks detail and analysis. Zinn does a terrific
job of giving analysis and detail into the positive and negative effects of the
Revolution. Zinn has the greater chapter, detailing the beginning of the revolution.
Zinn s chapter gives a detailed view of the beginning of the revolution, through the
struggle to begin the revolution, explaining no taxation without representation , and
the struggle between rich and poor. Kennedy and Zinn cover the struggle to begin
the revolution. However, Zinn goes into much greater detail, he says, But as the
conflict with Britain intensified, the colonial leaders of the movement for
independence, aware of the tendency of poor tenants to side with the British in
their anger against the rich, adopted policies to win over people in the countryside
(Zinn 63). Zinn exemplifies the way the colonial leaders persuaded the farmers to
join the revolution. Zinn gives a more detailed view of what it took to put together a
militia against the British. Kennedy says, In a broad sense, America was a
revolutionary force form the day of its discovery by Europeans (Kennedy, 113).

33. Computer Science And Its First Leap Out Of Mathematics
In the beginning, there was Math; and for a long time after there was only Math.
Computer Science is a relatively new field compared to others such as Math,
Communication, Philosophy, etc. Computer Science could be boiled down to The
study of how to compute . In this way of looking at the field, you can see how it
originated from people s desires to compute faster and more complex problems. This
desire led us to the abacus, mechanical calculators, and eventually to the computer.
Computer sciencetoday is the theory, design and application of computers. Today
computer scientists care about more than just solving complex math problems.
They care about solving complex global problems like curing disease, identity
fraud, and getting people to Mars. World War 2 is where the field of Computer
Science made its first leap out of the shadows of Mathematics. It was thanks to the
military need to safely test new weapons of mass destruction with the use of
computer simulations that computers got their first push. The military s desire to
encrypt information that a team of humans could not decipher in a reasonable
amount of time also helped give rise to machines that could do more complex work
than a single human and complete them in faster times than a team of humans. It was
various world governments looking to save man power and resources that lead to
the shift toward machines, that would one day be computers, working for us. As
important as World War II was for the birth of

The first similarity is Manderley house, at the beginning of the story and the film,
the narrator describes Manderley it is a secret and silent house also she images of
a big house when anybody thought they have lost it and she talks about the details
such as the stony surface cover with grass and weeds. I see this accurate
description in the movie. The second similarity is Mrs. de Winter reactions. There
are several situations happen whether joy, sadness or debate Mrs. de Winter s
reaction is similar to film and novel such as when she meets Maxim she feels so
happy together. Moreover, she lacks confidence and she is insecure if Maxim
loves Rebecca more than her. The last similarity is the personality of housekeeper
Mrs. Danvers, there is a great similarity between Mrs. Danvers characters in the
novel and the film. She is the head housekeeper and Mrs. Danvers is Rebecca s
maid. She hates the new wife also she does not want Maxim to marry any woman
after Rebecca so she is like a devil she makes her do something her husband does not
like such as when she convinces her to wear the same dress that Rebecca has already

35. Pluto s Position On The Solar System
Introduction Pluto s Position in the Solar System Pluto used to be considered the
ninth planet of our solar system, but in 2006 Pluto s planetary classification was
changed to a dwarf planet (Choi). Pluto is located in the Kuiper belt and it orbits
beyond Neptune, which makes Pluto a trans Neptunian object, or TNO (Schneider
and Arny 380 381). Plutos elliptical orbit of the sun takes 248 years, and on average
it is approximately 3.6 billion miles from the sun (Dunbar). Pluto has an extremely
cold atmosphere since it is so far away from the sun. On average, Pluto s
atmospheric temperature is 390 degrees Fahrenheit, or 40 K (Schneider and Arny
380). NASA recently launched a new mission to explore Pluto and its atmosphere
with the New Horizons spacecraft, and we have also learned new information
about Pluto s topography. Pluto has many mountain ranges, lands with deep
craters, frozen plains, and flowing nitrogen ice. The frozen plains on the eastern side
of Pluto are believed to be younger than its deep cratered, western areas. The eastern
plains of Pluto are only thought to be 100 million years old, and the western area
may be billions of years old ( NASA s New Horizons Finds ). Pluto also has five
moons that are being explored as part of the New Horizons mission. Pluto s moons
are: Charon, Hydra, Nix, Styx, and Kerberos all of which have variable spin rates (

the eight psychosocial stages of human development. Each success that is achieved is
caused due to the completion or overcoming of a task or crisis. When a child grows
into adolescence, he/she arrives at the fifth stage of human development. Identity
versus role confusion is examined and experienced as the young adult either
overcomes the task by developing an identity or by facing a crisis of confusion. At
this point, the teenager is dealing with a unified and consistent sense of self that
integrates pubertal changes into a mature sexual identity, assumes adult social and
occupational roles, and established personal values and attitudes The adolescent is...

Because adolescence continues as long as society allows, the search for identity
characterized by the moratorium status may continue into young adulthood. In my
opinion, if TCKs fall in the moratorium status, it s not a negative result. Creating an
identity for yourself when you are at that age is struggle enough when you are
situated in one culture for all of your existence; therefore it is understandable that
most TCKs find themselves taking longer in their identity crises than most teenagers.
The moratorium status allows TCKs to struggle through their crises without any need
for commitment. This may be seen as unhealthy but it is justifiable considering their
confusion in regards to their identity. The fourth status is diffusion, when adolescents
avoid the challenge and refuse to make a commitment. Most TCKs tend to fall in the
last category. These developmental tasks like making a commitment and handling a
crisis tend to be interrupted due certain factors in their lives. Due to these
interruptions we see both early maturity and delayed adolescence in TCKs which
negatively affect their the development of their

Article Summary: Teaching All Learners as if they are Special
Introduction
This article, published in 2002 by Nancy Gadbow, examines some of the issues
experienced by adult learners with special needs. The author asserts the concept of
diversity should include special needs and differences in terms of disability, ethnicity,
culture, language, age, gender, experience, and geography. Furthermore in order to
give each person equal access to the curriculum a range of instructional approaches
and technologies should be incorporated into the learning environment.
Discussion
Gadbow believes it is the duty of adult educators to instill a life long love of
learning into their students, helping adults learn how to learn is the most important
thing a teacher ever does (p. 53). The first responsibility of educators working with
adults is to help them identify their learning styles and differences as well as other
special learning needs, and then provide effective strategies to adapt to these
individual learning needs (53). The author s contention that all learners are special
means seeing the possibilities as well as the problems or particular needs of each
student as they present themselves. The author believes that as the United States
prepares individuals to enter the workforce in the twenty first century addressing
individual learner s needs and differences becomes even more critical. Rapid

related to the use of privacy. Johnson asserts that even though it might be true that
individuals often trade off piracy for what appears as small benefits, it is not clear
how the behavior ought to be interpreted. The point of view that individuals readily
provide personal information does not necessarily mean that they do not value
privacy. These people might be naГЇve and in some cases uninformed regarding the

43. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath Essay
What is in the spring of your life if the spring of a life refers to your first twenty
years in your life? The Bell Jar, a semi autobiographical novel by Silvia Plath,
describes Esther Greenwood s harsh spring of her life. Narrating in the first
person, Esther tells her experience of a mental breakdown in a descriptive
language, helping the readers visualize what she sees and feel her emotions. The
novel takes place in New York City and Boston during the early 1950s when women
s roles were limited to domesticity. The repression of women s roles in the American
society during the 1950s and other influences such as her lack of confidence, her
hesitance, her mother, and her feminist point of view seem to affect her mental
breakdown. Like most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, she hesitates to choose one dream. She compares a life to a fig tree,
and the figs on the fig tree symbolize ambition, dreams or goals. Her figs are a
happy home with a husband and children, a famous poet, a brilliant professor, an
amazing editor and so on. Although having lots of goals, she believes that
choosing one [means] losing all the rest (77). Therefore, she is starving to death,
seeing the figs wither, go black , and [plop] to the ground at my feet (77). Using
metaphors in a descriptive language, Plath makes the reader visualize a young
woman under a fig tree with full of figs, hesitating to pick the figs. The dreams got
rotten and drop to her feet. This visualization terrifies the nineteen year old girl,
who should be hopeful for her future, because she should decide on one before they
all drop. Her fear becomes more severe while she performs her last work as an
intern in New York City, which is to be photographed with a symbol of her career
goal. She tries to hide herself not to be photographed because she fears picking
only one dream among her dreams. Asked what she wants to be, she says she does
not know, but soon says she wants to be a poet. Then, she bursts into tears while
being photographed with a paper rose because the paper rose means, to her, her
abandonment of other goals. Also, her crying depicts a symptom of
44. Maze Runner External Conflict
In the novel The Maze Runner, there are many internal and external conflicts that
occurs throughout it. The main external conflict, would be how Thomas and the
rest of the Gladers are trying to find their way out of the maze. This conflict was a
struggle all the way to the end of the novel because every night the maze changed
its puzzle. Therefor they could not find their way through. Every night the gates
would close, keeping the Glades in a safe place and the grievers inside the maze.
Another external conflict would be the events occurring outside of the maze. No one
on the outside seems to be able to figure out how to get the solar flares from the sun
to stop hitting the earth. Wicked leave it up to the kids in the maze to figure out how

I have not told half of what I saw Marco Polo. Marco Polo was a world famous
traveler and trader. The introductions of China and Asia, for many, was all thanks
to him. Polo is most known for his travels to China and his book. His book
describes the basis of the descriptions of places that were not really discovered.
Polo s childhood was rough and unordinary. Polo was born around 1254 in Venice.
Polo s mother died when Polo was young, leaving him with his father, Niccolo.
Niccolo and Polo s uncle, Maffeo, however, left on a long expedition to Asia. This
circumstance left Polo to be raised by his uncle and aunt. His uncle and aunt taught
Polo how to read, write, calculate arithmetic, and to become a merchant (McNeese;

Ara Pacis and Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor are two monuments from
different ancient civilizations. Ara Pacis Augustae means the altar of Augustus
peace in English. Augustus is also known as Octavian, he started to use the name
Augustus after he was in power of Rome. Although Augustus was an elected consul
after Actium war, he is literally a dictator according to actions he took during the
period he was in power of Rome. He destroyed the republic Rome, and become the
first emperor in Roman history. The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is the
mausoleum of Ying Zheng, the first emperor ever in Chinese History. Zheng, like
Augutus, is also primus inter pares in many people before him. He was the king of
Qin, a vassal state, before he declared to be an emperor of Qin dynasty. Under his
leadership, Qin conquered the other six vassal states, unified China. Soon after that,
Zheng declared himself to be Shi Huang Di, which means the first emperor of the
unified China. Ara Pacis Augustae and Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor share
the similar meanings of showing their power and embedding themselves into history
as well as minds of people who live in and after that time period.Ara Pacis is a
Roman altar built for Augustus, during the time period between 13 and 9 B.C.E

And, I think, so is Najmah. I d like to spend some time with my mother and father, to
make peace with them. I was all they had, and it hurt them terribly to lose me
(Staples 236). This shows she wants to emphasize with her parents because of what
happened because she feels that since they are part of her family she should make
peace with them since it hurt them terribly to lose her. I think this connects with
the loss of Faiz because she now knows how her parents felt to lose her and she
connects with this because she knows how terribly she felt to lose Faiz so now she
understands how they must have felt making her want to go back and emphasize
with them so they won t have to feel the same way Nusrat did anymore.(STEWE 2)
How can a woman named Help not return to America to make peace with her

She feels she should represent the name Faiz gave her by helping out her parents

Congress. Despite his recent diagnosis of glioblastoma, McCain returned to the

but it was evident to him that it was being passed quickly and not meeting its full
potential. In response to his veto McCain said, I would consider supporting
legislation... were it the product of extensive hearings, debate and amendment.
But that has not been the case (Wilkie). Although McCain was not opposed to the
bill as a whole, he knew that the way it was devised was improper and that the
American people deserved better. Even considering his personal disagreements
with Obamacare, McCain was not willing to let that stay in the way of fighting for
the best health care bill possible. McCain s decision to finally vote against the
Graham Cassidy Bill was not an easy one. While simultaneously dealing with a
cancer diagnosis McCain was facing the tough battle of being able to show up to
the vote, yet alone change the course of it. The White House not only expected
McCain s absence, but prepared for it by having Mike Pence stand by to vote.
However, Senator McCain did indeed show up for his vote at 1:20 AM at Capitol

Obamacare repeal. As a result of voting no, the skinny repeal was trashed and the

They are only playing a consultative role to the Iraqi armed forces and Syrian rebels
that are fighting them in Syria.
This book seeks to define ISIS, who they are and what their purpose is. From their
point of view, this terrorist organization seems to be engaging in a religious war
against their enemies. However the UK and US do not see the war as a religious
one, but mainly one that rids the world of the new age terrorists.
They are called new age terrorists as they have broken ranks from the original
group al Qaeda. This gives people cause for concern, as their new age methods tend
to be more vicious and radical that then of the original group.
The operation of their group is controlled similar to a business and they also have
strengths in numbers. Therefore, with their current resources in the area and their
growing numbers, they are slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with. This
means that at any given time they are capable of carrying out an attack on the
western world. The concern is that they want to have their voices heard and this
means by any means necessary they will try to get the world s attention.
This group is unlike any other the world has seen before due to its operations. No
other terrorist group has been so organized to get things done rather quickly and
effectively. Their reach extends outside of those countries and has been actively

The future of society is an often unpredictable topic due to its many variables. In
The Lost Island and in The City of the End of Things , the future is depicted as
something detrimental to the society each story represents. In Pauline Johnson s
short story, The Lost Island , this concept is manifested in the visions given by the
Medicine Man, who foretells the oppression of his people by the arrival of the
colonizers. In Archibald Lampman s poem, The City of the End of Things , this
concept is expressed through the downfall of greater humansociety in favour of a
colder, more robotic age. These two texts exemplify the variable nature of the future
by focusing on the harmful possibilities that may befall society. Each of these... Show

In the poem The City of the End of Things , the narrator recalls the manner in which
humanity existed before the rise of the technological era so that the current
environment has a greater impact. The story The Lost Island represents the status of
the Aboriginal people as the confirmation of a prophecy which foretold their
inevitable oppression. This detrimental state of their society is the result of the
foreseen arrival of the non Aboriginal people to Vancouver. The prophecy that
foretold this states of the people is told by the character known only as my old
tallicum [friend] (Johnson 233). Within the story, this character is telling another,
unnamed character, a specific story about the history of their people (Johnson 233).
According to this story, an old medicine man was once plagued by visions of the
future. He was described as hearing voices throughout his life, which told him about
the inevitable arrival of the white man...many hundreds of them, many thousands of
them (Johnson 234). The prophecy continued, claiming that the Indians will learn
[the white man s] ways...will become as they are...it will be as if the Indians had
lost all bravery, all courage, all confidence (Johnson 234). The accuracy of this
prophecy is made clear in earlier passages of the story. The Lost Island began with the
main character saying, we Indians have lost...our lands...[our] language and the
legends and the traditions... (Johnson 233). From this it is

Social Injustice Book Review
Injustice: why social inequality persists, by Daniel Dorling.
The main aim of this book is to help re define injustice but first we must ask
ourselves what is social justice? As defined by (Walker, 1999, p.9). Social justice is
mutual responsibility it insists that we all accept duties as well as rights to each other
and to society .
Dorling s book focuses on 5 main causes of injustice in todays modern world and
how these 5 causes have changed in comparison to what they were in the past. The
path to a better future, these contend, lies in a better understanding and appreciation
of how the injustices of the past affect patterns of oppression today (Spinner Halev,
2012, p.4). What was once seen as unfortunate many years ago has now become
what s known as unjust . Dorling does an excellent job of explaining what these 5
tenants of injustice are and he does so in an easy to understand language whilst
giving us examples of how these 5 tenants have changed to prior years. Each tenant
both past and present is briefly explained to us in the introduction of the book, but
Dorling delves deeper into each tenant in such greater detail in later chapters. Each
chapter shows us how these tenants affect/have affected certain domains within our
society.
These new tenants/faces of injustice nowadays are stated as: Elitism, Exclusion,
Prejudice, Greed and Despair. Old evils/faces that were once said to cause social
injustice were due to a lack of: Education (ignorance), Money (want) Work (idleness)
Comfort (squalor) and Health (disease).
Dorling points out that while many people say they don t agree with these beliefs or
claim to reject them, are often at times the ones to uphold ... Show more content on

55. History Of Electricity As A Treatment
History of Electricity as a Treatment
The idea of placing electric shocks on the head, or body, of a mentally ill patient
has existed for hundreds, even thousands of years. Before the invention of
electricity, electric eels, electric catfish, and other electrically stimulating fish were
applied to a variety of body parts in order to alleviate some sort of ailment. In A.D.
46, it was recorded that a torpedo fish applied to the head was used to relieve
headaches. Later in the sixteenth century in Africa, people used electric catfish to act
as a tool to carry out an exorcism to expel devils.
Once electricity was invented, psychologists and scientists alike utilized this new tool
in hopes of curing a range of mental illnesses, physical ailments, and diseases. In the
18th and 19th centuries European researchers applied electricity to the hands, neck,
spinal column, kidneys, and buttocks of patients attempting to treat physical
impairments, like blindness, to schizophrenia. The first documented use of electricity
to treat melancholia, was Giovanni Aldini, a professor at the Bologna University in
1801. Aldini believed that the use of electricity by itself was therapeutic. The
difference between simply using electricity and electroconvulsive therapy is the
stimulation of a grand mal seizure, without a seizure the treatment is not efficacious.
The two Italian psychiatrists credited with discovering ECT plainly stated that
electricity is simply the easiest way to induce a seizure;

General Dwight D. Eisenhower had stated, Much has happened since the Nazi
triumphs of 1940 41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great
defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts
have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and
placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned!
The free men of the world are marching together to victory! ( FDR: Day by Day ).
The invasion of Normandy was a nightmare to Adolf Hitler and to the Nazis, but it
was a great success to the Allied powers. Overall, the invasion of Normandy can be
considered the breaking point of World War II, and it immeasurably impacted the
Nazi party and the Allied power. There are three main points in this research paper,
such as the main events that happened, the nations, and the outcome of the invasion.
The first event that happened was the preparation of the invasion of Normandy; it
was enormous and complicated. To command this rigorous operation, Western Allied
leaders assigned Supreme Allied Commander, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, for the

during the battle around the Falaise Pocket ( D Day and the Battle ). Continuing
along with time, on the day of April 30, Adolf Hitler had been found dead from
committing suicide one week before the Nazi surrender ( D Day1 ). On May 8,
1945, the Allied power accepted the unadulterated surrender of Nazi Germany
