Goodbye Columbus Essay
Sometimes there are two novels that have the same theme, and sometimes they have the same
plot, but in the case of the two novels, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the novel
Goodbye Columbus, by Philip Roth they explore the same dynamics of the chase of the
American dream. In both novels there are similar themes, they both use the idea of sex and money
as a form of power. Both novels can relate to each other because the authors decided to show how
the pursuit of the American dream may not always be a good thing, and how sex and money can
cause problems in that pursuit. Overall in both of the novels the reoccurring theme of sex, money
and the search for the American dream is present and in both novels the authors show that... Show

Brenda also represents sex to Neil therefore she represents two of the major themes of the novel,
sex and money. To Neil there are many differences in the Patimkin family that make them very
different from his own. They are able to eat in the dining room instead of the kitchen. They have
a maid that makes the meals and cleans up after them. They also have a refrigerator full of fruit
that is always full. This is all the ideal life for Neil, and when you put Brenda in the mix you
have Neil s perfect world. If he could become part of the Patimkin family he would have sex,
money and in essence the American dream. Those three ideas are also present in the novel The
Great Gatsby. In this novel the two worlds are divided by old and new money, instead of the idea
of assimilation to society after immigration. In this novel, where you live determines your wealth,
just as it did in the novel Goodbye Columbus. In The Great Gatsby the idea of wealth representing
power is the most prevalent aspect of the novel. The title character Jay Gatsby, is wealthy and he
lives in the new money side of town. The love of his life is Daisy Buchannan, and she lives on
the old money side of town. Their love is similar to that of Neil and Brenda. They are symbols of
two different worlds, yet they find love, but in both of cases the love does not end happy. It is a
sign that maybe what you think is perfect and what you think is right for you is not always the

Memory Retention Research Paper
Research: Memory retention is essential to all human beings. It is a fundamental function of our
brain: whether it be memorizing people s names, memorizing math formulas, or memorizing the
location of the car keys. We all recognize the importance of memorization and we all seek ways to
improve our memory retention skills. Many different parts of the brain control a person s memory,
but the most important part is the frontal lobe. It controls working and short termmemory. Due to
the processes of stimulus of the sensory memory which transmits to the frontal lobe, people can, on
average, recall 7 items after looking at them for 15 seconds. Neuroscience journal In the frontal
lobe, encoding, storage, and retrieval occur in an effort to not lose... Show more content on

The beneficial activity of walking also causes an improvement of creativity according to Dr.
Oppezzo of Stanford University. Dr. Oppezzo created a matched pair experimental design using
undergraduate student volunteers as subjects that tests the variable of walking versus sitting and
inside walking versus outside walking. he conducted 3 experiments in which she compared tests
of GAU (creative divergent thinking) and CRA (convergent thinking) using the variables of
walking on a treadmill, sitting, walking then sitting, sitting then walking, sitting twice, and
outdoors walking. For her last test she compared tests of creative analogy generation with the
variables of sitting inside, walking on a treadmill inside, walking outside, and rolling on a
wheelchair outside. In all of her findings, she saw an increase in creativity following or during the
physical activity of walking. The increase in creativity she found was also independent of location
of the test, meaning that being outdoors did not help or hinder memory retention skills when
compared to results from indoors. This suggests that some physical aspect of walking stimulates
the brain s memory system. But, more research needs to be conducted to understand the biological
cause of this effect, which Dr. Oppezzo calls acute. She is unable to provide any scientifically
based answers to the results of her experiment because it is still unclear

Development Of The Mammalian Central Nervous System Essay
During normal development of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS), neural stem cells
(NSC) give rise to neurons via process of neurogenesis (Kempermann et al., 2004; Zhao et al.,
2008). Neurogenesis normally occurs in dentate gyrus (DG) region of the hippocampus and lateral
ventricle of sub ventricular zone (SVZ) (Zhao et al., 2008). Hippocampal neurogenesisplays pivotal
role in neurologic and psychiatric disorder like epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia and mood
disorders (Antonova et al., 2004; Keller and Roberts, 2008; Lucassen et al., 2006; Zhao et al.,
2008). Development of the nervous systemis complex, and includes multistep dynamic processes
such as proliferation, differentiation, migration, expansion of axons and dendrites, synapse
formation, myelination and programmed cell death (Rice and Barone, 2000). These processes
required the coordinated expression of cellular and molecular events in a spatial and temporal
manner during the braindevelopment (Rice and Barone, 2000; Rodier, 1994). Several growth
factors and signal transduction cascades have been implicated in controlling NSC behavior in the
developing brain (Faigle and Song, 2013). Among these, members of the Wnt family of secreted
glycoprotein thought to be variably influence proliferation and lineage decisions of NSC and their
progeny (Clevers et al., 2014).
Several environmental toxicants including heavy metals, solvents, pesticides and endocrine
disrupting chemicals (EDCs) modulate the normal

How Did Virginia Woolf Treat Women
During her life, Virginia Woolf endured many acts of discrimination not based on the content of
her character or the body of her work but based purely upon her gender. Through her years of
schooling towards her ascension to literary fame she witnessed an astonishing difference in the
treatment of men in college and women in college especially in terms of food. To show the
difference in treatment Woolf uses her description of the meals as a metaphor of the difference of
treatment between men and women in college as well as extending the metaphor to show that their
treatment in college reflect how they are treated within society. Woolf first begins in each of the
passages opening sentences describes the time the meal is taking place and the... Show more content

On the male side, they finished their meal and headed to light a good cigarette and had no need
to hurry this once again highlights the leisure enjoyed by males in this society despite working
just as equally if not less than women. Woolf contrasts the men s leisure with the scrap[ing] [of]
their chairs and hall [emptying] which obviously shows the women rushing in a sluggish
manner to leave as if headed to do a menial task. With that point being made we can see that
Woolf is bringing the social ties argument to the light where the males are meant not only to
represent the males who control the social dominance but also the ultra wealthy who leisurely sit
back and relax while the women on the other hand are forced to enjoy a subpar meal that was
homely and plain then head begrudgingly back to work in some factory probably owned by one of
the men enjoying their novelist s convention in passage one, thus Woolf makes not only a comment
on women s treatment and how she s disgusted with it but also a broader critique on society and
wealth disparity during the time period it was

Dopamine Hypothesis
The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a chronic, psychotic disorder in
which the affected individual feels a disconnection from reality, chaotic thought patterns, delusions,
hallucinations and various disturbances in behavioural, emotional and intellectual perception.
Schizophrenia is often linked to an irregular balance of dopaminein the brain and defects of the
frontal lobe (The American Heritage medical dictionary, 2007). The symptoms of schizophreniacan
be broken down into two categories: negative symptoms and positive symptoms. The negative
symptoms include an absence of normal function, including: alogia, anhedonia, depressed
appearance and apathy (Ayd, 1995), however this essay will focus primarily on the positive... Show

To treat these psychoses, anti psychotic medication is prescribed. Anti psychotic medication
works by binding to a specific receptor in the brain, known as dopamine receptor D2 (Kapur,
2000). By blocking this receptor, symptoms of psychosis are controlled. As symptoms of
stimulant psychosis are very similar to the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, anti psychotic
medication is the preferred medication to treat affected individuals. Two types of anti psychotic
medications have been developed, typical and atypical. Typical anti psychotics have a high
potency and high affinity to D2 receptors, however this can cause extrapyramidal effects and
Parkinsonism (Golan Tashjian, 2012). Atypical anti psychotics have a lower potency and low
affinity to D2 receptors and less side effects. Therefore, anti psychotic medication must block an
appropriate amount of D2 receptors as a deficiency of dopamine can cause extrapyramidal effects
and even worsen the negative symptoms whereas an excess results in psychosis. A cross sectional
neuroimaging study reveals that the link between D2 receptors and extrapyramidal side effects
occurs only after 78% of D2 receptor occupancy (Kapur,

Natural Gas Is A Non Renewable Resource
Natural Gas
Natural gas is a non renewable resource, meaning that it will not last forever. If the production of
natural gas continues at the same rate, it will only last for approximately another 91 years.
Natural gas is a power source used to power particular things in homes, for example heaters, hot
water and stoves. The way this particular power source is produced/sourced is that at the bottom of
the ocean, deceased animals and plants etc. otherwise called organic matter are found and can be
broken down into the formation of natural gas through a series of wells and pipes, and delivered to
homes and businesses and other places where natural gas is used through the pipes. Scientists are
trying to find other resources for gas because they are aware that the current one won t last and
that they are harming the environment and habitats of creatures in the sea through this procedure.
This procedure is called Hydraulic Fracturing, otherwise known as fracking . Part of the fracking
procedure is that a high water pressure is sent through tubes and pipes under water being forced
onto different rocks. This water, however, contains several harmful chemicals that damage the
organisms and animals and their habitats under water. Once the rock is cracked/ fractured, the oil
and gas is carried back up the pipes. The air is also polluted in this procedure as the findings of the
fracking process are relocated into either evaporators or into condensation tanks releasing dangerous

Irish Potato Famine Essay
In the early 1800s life in Ireland wasn t easy, Irish citizens got by day to day by farming and
relying on the potato. The potato was their main source of food and money. With out the potato the
Irish would have nothing. No one was prepared for what was about to happen in 1845, the
beginning of the Great Irish PotatoFamine.
The Irish Potato Famine was the worst tragedy in the history of Ireland. The outcome of the famine
would result in hundreds of thousands dead, an failure of the economy in Ireland, and millions of
emigrants forced to leave their home and country just to try to survive. The famine would effect
countries other than Ireland as well. Some of these countries included England, America, Canada,
and Australia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This resulted in more unsanitary conditions.
Eventually the federal government imported Indian corn from America to be distributed to the
most desperate people. Although it was for good intentions, it didn t comply with Irish
expectations for food. The corn was difficult to mill on the small number of mills in Ireland, it was
difficult to digest, and it was not very filling, leaving many Irish hungry. It eventually became
accepted and the Irish learned to deal with it.
In 1846 due to no effort to rid the infected potatoes of the previous year the new season provided
enough food to feed the country for only one month. This caused people to eat what ever they
could get their hands on. People ate dogs, horses, birds, mushrooms, roots, flowers, and anything
that was believed to have a nutritional value. Fish was a food that involved a risk to obtain due to
the rough Irish seas and rocky coast. Shellfish and seaweed were eaten but after many people died
from eating poisonous varieties of both.
Crime rates rose, and because of overcrowed prisons and expensive costs of keeping prisoners alive,
convicted prisoners were sent to Australia. This caused for people to break laws just to escape the
danger of living in Ireland.
Other diseases began such as the typhus fever, bacilli dysentery, ophthalmia, an

The study will encompass the compare and contrast of two great writers literary works. It will take
comprehensive discussion on Ben Jonson s The Alchemist and William Shakespeare s The Tempest
. Jonson and Shakespeare were contemporaries with more immediately recognizable common
ground between them than difference. They shared the same profession and brought forth their
works from the matrix of common intellectual property. They appealed to the same audience and
both gained popularity and esteem as accomplished playwrights. At the more social level, they were
both struggling artists conscious of the need for patronage and support from their wealthier and

The distinction between I and him is emphasized by Jonson s assertion of an answer to
Shakespeare s way of doing things. The quest for self knowledge has been integral to the
structures and evolution of human society throughout history. During the early modem period,
the classical maxim of nosce teipsum operated almost universally, not only as a prompt towards,
but also as a goal of, both individual and communal achievement and actualization. At one level,
Hamlet s tribute may be taken as an adumbration of the Renaissance engagement with the
epistemological enquiries into the nature of man, and his place and function in the cosmic chain
of being. What a piece of work is a man, How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and
moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god
the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals. And yet to me what is this quintessence of dust?
Jonson explicitly bases their sense of the play s similarity upon theories of comedy that imply such
affirmation. In Volpone and The Alchemist, Jonson sues irony to expose how far short of the ideal
is the world of the play, and thus celebrates the ideal indirectly. If the

The reason why kids choose to dropout out and play baseball instead is to one day get in

Character Analysis Of Shylock In Venice
No one can argue that Shylock is one of the most complex and intriguing characters ever created in
literature. He has unique traits that make him who he is. Shylock is a Jewish man in a majority
Christian city named Venice. In the Middle Ages usury was banned to Christians by the church and
for that reason usuryor the illegal act of lending money, was controlled by the Jews. Shylockwas one
of the most prominent moneylenders in Venice. However in the play Shylock is portrayed as an
angry man who is hated by the Venetians. They are not a fond of his angry mannerisms, despise
him for his religion, occupation, etc. No one can deny that Shylock is motivated by money, but one
can argue that he is also motivated by vengeance.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anther example where Shylock fits his archetype perfectly is in Act IV, Scene 1. As we know,
Shylock is the antagonist in the play and as we know, all villains must pay for their heinous
actions eventually. In this scene Shylock is essentially stripped of everything he owns. Half of
his wealth must go to the city of Venice while the other half ends up going to his daughter
Jessica. While some might feel bad for him at this moment, we must think of the saying what
comes around goes around. In Act III Shylock is merciless and refuses to take any form of
payment in exchange for Antonio. All he cares about is getting a pound of Antonio s flesh.
Keeping Antonio in a cell and essentially embarrassing him completely, even though Antonio is on
his knees begging for mercy, Shylock refuses to let go of what he wants, the pound of flesh. Like
Amanda Bailey says in her work Shylock and the Slaves: Owing and Owing in The Merchant of
Venice, Shylock sees the desperation of an insolvent debtor [Antonio] (Bailey). He is merciless
and essentially wants to prove a point. However, this merciless act comes back to haunt Shylock
when Portia goes after him in court. In the end, Shylock loses and is miserable, something that
happens to all villains and antagonists. That s why he fits so perfectly with that villain archetype.
We spoke about how Shylock fits his archetype

Metacognitive Self Regulation
Rationale
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether metacognitive and self regulation interventions
improve mathematical achievement in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD). Although self regulation has an ambiguous meaning, recently it has been referred to as
the ability to manage one s behavior, so as to withstand impulses, maintain focus, and undertake
tasks, even if there are other more enticing alternatives available (Boyd et al., 2005, p. 3). Jarvela
and Jarvenoja, (2011), Zimmerman, (2008) stated that self regulation is essential to the learning
process and Wolters (2011) suggested that it can aid individuals, especially secondary school
students in developing more effective learning habits. Self regulation ... Show more content on

Due to this particular research on the development of self regulation in children many studies have
investigated the possible effects of metacognitive and self regulation strategies on academia. For
example, Labuhn et al., (2010) reported that students that received SRL assistance and guidance
were more likely to exhibit higher levels of self efficacy towards their academic ability resulting in
improved performance within the classroom. It was also concluded that self regulated learners
performed at a higher standard in comparison to students that did not receive SRL guidance
(Labuhn et al., 2010). Additionally Researchers, Graham Harris (2000) and Kistner et al. (2010)
found that SRL results in improved performance within a learning environment and can also limit
academic deficiency in many students. Self regulated learning strategies and interventions must be
aided by metacognitive reflection and feedback from teachers and at times from peers through
group tasks etc. (Dignath and BГјttner, 2008). Although there are countless studies investigating
metacognition and self regulation strategies, those that address individuals with behavioural
disorders are scarce, especially in regards to children. The reasoning for this is not only due to the
numerous challenges regarding the formulation of self regulatory abilities in children (Harris
Schmidt, 1997), but also due to the significant problems with attention, inhibition and impulsivity
that children with ADHD exhibit which makes formulation of self regulatory an incredibly difficult
task. This study therefore aims to provide further information and understanding on the

Carmen Opera Sparknotes
The original Carmen opera was set in Spain and was about the defeat of a soldier who was
seduced by the intensity of the gypsy known as Carmen. After he deserts his long time love and
quits his military duties, he still loses Carmen s love, as she fell in love with another man. The
soldier then stabs and kills her in a jealous rage. Ramaka was able to adapt this renowned play
and transform it into one that politically targets and addresses post colonial issues in Senegal such

By making Karmen such a strong character, Ramaka transforms her into something larger than
life almost mythical, like Ramatou from Hyenas. The main difference about Karmen compared
to other strong female characters from the films that we have watched, is her sexuality. Her
mother is a strong female character, as is apparent from the immense amount of respect that
people have from her; such as when the mother tells off the police and everyone stands by her
side and work to get kick out the cops. The other women seem to see her as some type of idol or
hero. I am assuming this is because Karmen does everything we only wish we could do (as was
mentioned by one of the translators in class). Women look up to her; especially due to the face
that pride, dignity, and beauty are all traits that are greatly admired in Senegal. Interestingly,
Karmen is in no ways unaware of this bold quality of hers, but she is also not arrogant about it.
This became apparent when she said I m no more women then the others they just chose not to make

Introduction The Blocker Burn Unit is a six bed Burn Intensive Care Unit located at the
University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. It has a long and storied history of
providing innovative burn care to its patients. The Burn unit was initially founded after a massive
explosion in Texas City Harbor that injured hundreds of people in 1944. Since inception, the unit
has dealt with disaster both fabricated and natural. In 2008, the BBU was one of only a handful
of services to remain open and operational after Hurricane Ike landed and dealt massive injury to
UTMB. The BBU not only sustained operations but also briefly expanded to provide pediatric burn
care when Shriners Burns Hospitalwas subsequently unable to reopen post hurricane. This paper
will detail the realities confronted by the BBU both currently, and in the future, with an exploration
as to those implications on fiscal outlook and provision of care.

Gender Roles And Roles Of William Shakespeare s The...
Gender plays an important role in Shakespeare s comedies. Cross gender roles and cross dressing
are essential not only for the inherent humour of the situation but also for the advancment of the
plot. English Renaissance stereotypes of women and men and their various roles and
responsibilities in society are reflected in Shakespeare. What sets Shakespeare apart is the fact
that he also challenges, and at times even breaks down those stereotypes especially in his
comedies. Hamlet may proclaim Frailty thy name is woman , but even the merest of character
analyses of Portia in The Merchant of Venice, or Viola in The Twelfth Night
conclusively proves that
they are anything but. In this paper we begin by examining the prevailing gender... Show more

Other praised virtues included physical features and beauty. Men naturally had more powerful
roles to play both socially as well as politically. In Renaissance society, men were expected to
engage in public affairs, to be talkers, make decisions, and on the whole be far more active
compared to women. They led aggressive, self satisfying, and (supposedly) duty bound lives. Men
controlled the positions of powerful positions ranging from family to the state. Ironically, the
monarch was a female, who was the most powerful person of the land.
GENDER AND THE TWELFTH NIGHT:
Shakespeare s greatness and enduring popularity cannot be attributed to a single or even a small
set of factors. It is undoubtedly the case however that one of Shakespeare s greatest traits has
been to unshackle himself from the limitations of his age. He transcends the stereotypical views
of Renaissance society as he portrays women as more than passive vessels. Women are often
equal to or sometimes even superior in their intelligence wit and vivacity compared to their male
counterparts. Viola, the resourceful and practical female protagonist of The Twelfth Night stands
out in this regard. Once she is shipwrecked and alone she quickly calculates that her position as a
single lady in a foreign land is a very dangerous one. To counteract that she, with the help of the
benevolent captain disguises herself as a man or a eunuch and proceeds to the court of Orsino the
duke of Illyria. There, she

Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Frankenstein
Coleridge s Rime of the Ancient Mariner tells the story of an ancient mariner who kills an
albatross and brings upon himself and his ship s crew a curse. The ancient mariner travels the
world, unburdening his soul, telling his story to whomever needs to hear it. Shelley alludes to the
poem several times.
Robert Walton in Frankenstein is similar to the Wedding Guest from Rime of the Ancient Mariner,
with Victor Frankenstein playing the role of the mariner. As the mariner feels compelled to share
his story to one who needs to hear it, so does Victor. The explicit theme in Rime of the Ancient
Mariner, that love conquers all, is a clue as to how the tragedy that occurs in Frankenstein s life
could have been avoided.

The very deep did rot: O Christ! That ever this should be! Yes, slimy things did crawl with legs
Upon the slimy sea (Coleridge pt. II, st. 9).
This quote shows The Mariner s outlook on nature in the beginning of the poem. The Mariner refers
to the creatures of the sea as slimy things, which obviously has a negative connotation. However,
once Coleridge teaches his character the lesson of the inherent beauty in nature, the Mariner learns
that all creatures are beautiful. In Shelley s piece, which also has this theme, it seems that
Frankenstein really never learns this lesson, while the creature does seem to grasp this concept.
I beheld those I loved spend vain sorrow upon the graves of William and Justine, the first hapless
victims to my unhallowed arts (Shelley 79).
This quote shows Shelley s theme of how devastating the consequences can be for one single
unthinking act. Obviously, Victor s single unthinking act was his creation of the creature. When he
made this creature, there is no way that he thought he would kill two of his closest loved ones, and
later kill more. However, it happened and Shelley is showing us how devastating the effects can be.
Similarly, in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Mariner also suffers for a single, unthinking act.

Women In The Handmaid
The rarity of fertile women would suggest that they would be treated better by society due to the
importance of their work but that is not the case. Handmaids, whose only job is to engage in a
sexual ceremony with men and give birth to healthy babies, are the most shunned in society, despite
their invaluableness. Sex in Gilead is understood to be something impersonal, emotionless. It is not
done out of love or desire but for the purpose of reproduction only.
The taboo of sex does not only affect women. Low ranking officers, like Guardians, are not
permitted to touch a woman until they are promoted to a higher rank and therefore assigned a wife.
If they earn enough power later they might even get a Handmaid of their own (Atwood 2010, 32).

The Significance of Death and Sex to William Shakespeare
The Significance of Death and Sex to William Shakespeare
In this essay, I will consider Death and Sin in Shakespearean drama and I would like to look at
three of Shakespeare s tragic plays: Hamlet , Othello and King Lear .
Shakespeare uses many themes in all his play that attract audiences throughout history. The things
he wrote about are as relevant now as they were in his time. Death and Sin were issues that are
always around. In his plays, Shakespeare could comment on these things and make audiences see
things that they could not before.
In Hamlet, we can see clear examples of Death and Sin as significant to Shakespearean drama.
The first thing that points to both death and sin is the inclusion of a ghost in the play. ... Show more

Religion in the 16th Century was still a prominent issue. Religion had changed from Catholicism to
Christianity, depending on which monarch was on the throne at the time. People were expected to
change religion depending on what their monarch said or face being an outcast. In Elizabeth s

resource could potential last for another 400 years. These types of numbers suggest that if low

benefits would be great. In the following paper I intend to give clear and succinct information on
how oil shale was deposited in the Greater Green River Basin, what it is made of, what was the
maturation history of the shale, how the oil is recovered from very impermeable sedimentary
units, how economics will play a role in its future as a reliable energy source, as well as the
environmental impact of oil production in the basin.

African American Identity
Iman Zahra
What, according to these writers of the Harlem Renaissance, are the sources of African American
identity?
The Discovery of African American Identity
In the 1900s African American have slowly started to gain their rights after the end of slavery. It
was a difficult and tedious process; however, they never gave up on what they believed in, which is
racial equality . African Americanstood together in organizations, marches, and unions because
they had something that united them which wasn t just skin color; it was inequality and slavery.
African Americans came together to celebrate the New Negro . They created an identity for
themselves through history and culture, and it spread nationwide with the creation of the Harlem
Renaissance . Harlem became the center of African American culture and the grassroots of African
American history, or as Alain Locke has called it: Harlem: Mecca of the New Negro.
According to Afro Americans in New York Life and History, The development of the Harlem
Renaissance was a result of two factors: First of all, the immigration that started during the war
which gave African Americans the motivation to become more confident of who they are, and more
responsible for their race and rights. They became defiant, bitter, and impatient. They would not
take silence and inequality as an answer. They expressed themselves through the Harlem
Renaissance. The second reason is the riots that followed World War I . African Americans fighted

Irony in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown Essay examples
Irony in Young Goodman Brown Nathaniel Hawthorne s tale Young Goodman Brown is replete,
is saturated, with irony. This essay will amply illustrate the validity of this statement. At the outset
of the story a young Puritan husband departs at sunset from his young Puritan wife, And Faith, as
the wife was aptly named, thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the
pink ribbons of her cap, while she called to Goodman Brown. The author says that Faith is aptly
named, an ironic statement since she, later in the evening, is being received into the assembly of

That he should criticize Faith in the very next sentence for doubting his intentions is, of course,
ironic since his intentions are thoroughly reprehensible. Though she is a beginning devil
worshipper, Faith s response to her husband uses the very language of a Puritan minister: Then
God bless you! said Faith, with the pink ribbons, and may you find all well, when you come
back. Quite ironic. Likewise Goodman s response to Faith is that of a devout Puritan sitting in
the front row at church on Sunday morning: Amen! cried Goodman Brown. Say thy prayers, dear
Faith, and go to bed at dusk, and no harm will come to thee. And his intentions are quite as evil as
hers. As Goodman turns the corner at the meeting house, his remorseful thoughts exalt the
goodness of his wife: What a wretch am I, to leave her on such an errand! She talks of dreams,
too. Methought, as she spoke, there was trouble in her face, as if a dream had warned her what
work is to be done tonight. But, no, no! twould kill her to think it. Well; she s a blessed angel on
earth; and after this one night, I ll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven. Ironically, Goodman
regards her goodness as unimpeachable and sublime. In the next sentence the author counterposes a
good at the beginning of the sentence, and an evil at the end of the same sentence for ironic effect:
With this excellent resolve for the future, Goodman Brown felt himself

The Power Of Responsibility In The Great Gatsby
The power of responsibility
Responsibility is a very important part of a person s personality and . Lennie and Gatsby run from
their responsibilities. Both did awful things and it ended up getting them in a very bad situation. In
real life running from responsibilities makes people look egotistical or unreliable because they don
t want to get themselves in trouble.
The Great Gatsby was written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and is about Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. It
tells the story of how James Gatz, a young farm boy turned himself into Jay Gatsby, a rich and
lively man. Always chasing after one person, Daisy. Of Mice and Men was written by John
Steinbeck and tells people about the struggles of the 1930 s workers in California through George
and Lennie. George and Lennie are two workers who always stayed by each other s side through
thick and thin even though George didn t want Lennie around.
Responsibility is something that everyone has and sometimes people might have to run. Though in
most cases people should learn to stay and face their responsibilities. If people ignore a
responsibility then it might help resolve the situation and if they don t ignore it any trouble or strife
can be prevented.

Role Of Art In The Gilded Age
The American Role of Art
The Gilded Age, named after the novel written by Mark Twain, describes a time full of social
issues in the United States. After the Civil War, America was a powerhouse in industrialization.
Due to the rapid economic development the rich got richer and the poor got, well they got poorer.
The Gilded Age depicts the huge financial, social, and political changes that the United States had
undergone from the ladder part of the nineteenth century up until World War I.
Art in the United States became somewhat of a necessity during this time; the wealthy sought to fill
their home with the finer things. The painters of this time aimed to glorify the reality of the

Traditional Family Model Of One Spouse Working Full Time...
The traditional family model of one spouse working full time outside the home and the other
spouse, usually the mom, staying at home and caring for the children seems to have gone by the
wayside somewhat in the last twenty years. And in a single parent situation, it is nothing short
of impossible to work out such a program. But the need for a consistent adult caregiver in the

alternatives that can make sure your kids are cared for and allow you to continue to maintain

single parent home. Day care for your younger children is a well known alternative that works
well for millions of single parent homes. Sometimes if you have older children who can care for

with these fine alternatives, many single moms and dads feel guilty driving off to work each day

ways depending on the reader. The novel takes place during the late nineteenth century and the
early twentieth century in a village named Umuofia, Nigeria. The timing is important to the
setting because during this period in colonial history, Britain was trying to modernize and
increase economic, cultural, and political influence in Africa. In Things Fall Apart women are

A misogynist, who is a person that is strongly prejudiced against women, would read this novel
and see nothing wrong with the way the women are being treated. Instead, the misogynist would

way Okonkwo has an impulsive temper and acts before he thinks. The way Okonkwo collects

her and her only daughter weeping. Neither of the other wives dared to interfere beyond an

offered by the school. The classes were taught by the head athletic trainer for the school who
believed in hands on learning, especially for his student trainers. During the duration of the course
and my time as a member of the team, I saw numerous different types of injuries; but there were
three that occurred most often: an ankle sprain, a muscle strain, and a rotator cuff tear.
The most common injury in athletes is an ankle sprain, which is an injury ... Show more content on

There will be a palpable defect in the superficial muscle otherwise known as the muscle towards
the top layer of the area, indicating the rupture of individual fibers or the entire muscle. Because
grade three strains usually cause a break in the normal outline of the muscle, there may be an
obvious, visible dent or gap under the skin where the affected muscle has come apart. A complete
rupture will cause the muscle to hemorrhage or bleed and can cause diffuse swelling in some
cases. Diffuse swelling often causes the injury to be unable to fully resolve due to the increased
fluid in the area which the body is unable to

Spain and the Balkans came under a long period of Muslim rule as did Iran and the middle
eastern countries, which were completely subsumed. Indian culture showed remarkable vitality
and survived. Perhaps this was a positive aspect of the rigid codification of laws and the caste
system. China and Japan were geographically isolated and never faced large scale invasion from
Islam, which anyway spread in Indonesia , the Philippines and malaysis, with the waning of
Indian power. East Asia was in fact an important sphere of Indian cultural export, with the
Srivijaya Empire, the Majpahit Empire and so on ruling for long. Here as Indian power
fragmented and declined. Islam and then European commercialist colonialism stepped in. And yet
much of Indian culture survived, in Indochina and Indonesia among other places, and Bali is still
Hindu. Indeed India did expand as a culture, via Buddhism all over East Asia and Ceylon, where
Indian sages spread the word of Buddha. Asoka was a self conscious cultural proselytizer. The
terms like Bhumiputra as well as names show the persistence of india cultural forms even in the 20th

Creole Hybridity in Literature
Jamaican patois is not an official language, which is the same for most if not all languages are
not, although recently, there are some creole dictionaries and Haitian Creole is being taught in
schools. People tend to have a negative perception of a creole and thus, the people who speak and
chose to write in this creole languageare often lumped into a box. There is a stigma attached to it,
and people often say that it is the language of the poor lower class of the country. Growing up in
St. Lucia, I saw how this is true, people are often embarrassed by their parent who spoke creole,
or they as children where forbidden to speak creole as to avoid being stereotyped. The language
expresses the history of the Caribbeanand the hybridity that emerges through language. In the
diaspora, people depend on creating a space of home in the host country and language is an
important part of this space. The connection immigrants feel when they come into contact with
literature that features a language of their native homeland offers them their own space in the
literary world, and a way for their stories to be told. The writers and people who use creole are
confirming their identities as a merger of multiple influences. They use the language despite the
stigma and fight to maintain the culture by doing so language is part of one s identity. Wordy,
Worldly Women Poets: Louise Bennett, Lorna Goodison and Olive Senior, by Denise deCaires

The Evolution of Google
It all started in 1995, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University. Larry was 22
years old and a University of Michigan graduate. Sergey was 21 years old at the time and was
assigned to show Larry around campus. Larry Page decided to attend Stanford University and
became close friends with Sergey Brin. In 1996, Larry and Sergey collaborates the search engine
BackRub . Stanford servers could not handle too much bandwidth from BackRub the first year
Larry and Sergey was running it. The following year in 1997, they registered Google.com on
September 15th. Google was created by them so; it could be a mission to organize millions of
information for the world to discover. Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated Google in
California and they opened a bank account for the established company (Google Inc., 2013).
The first office space they started in was in Susan Wojcicki s garage on Santa Margarita Ave.,
Menlo Park, California. February 1999, Larry and Sergey moved out of Susan s garage and
moved to 165 University Avenue in Palo Alto. Then, they were able to hire only eight employees
to start off their growing business. In August, they are able to open up a Mountain View location
at 2400 Bayshore, south of Stanford University and near some city named Sunnyvale, Santa Clara,
and San Jose. At a Starbucks in 2000 on 86th Street, they opened up Google New York; which is a
one person sales team. At the former Port Authority building at 111 Eighth Avenue, there are

Sherwood Community Reflection
Community:
I have been involved with the Sherwood Community Association (SCA) for approximately 6
years. Within the organization, I am responsible for representing the interests of nearly 5000
Sherwood residents, leading the efforts for corporate sponsorship and co leading a committee that
works with municipal and provincial representatives to provide aesthetic upgrades to the
community. My impact has helped the SCA develop a footprint within the industry, raise historic
levels of funding to better support our constituents and has helped obtain aesthetic upgrades to
more than an acre of community land. It has been an incredibly humbling experience to work
alongside a group of dedicated individuals to service our community. Through this, I came to
understand the value of resilience; I realized that life consists of many obstacles and what makes a
great leader is their capacity to learn from failures and use them to come back stronger and more
prepared to deal with future challenges.
Employment:
In Summer, 2016, I worked as an Undergraduate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My involvement has impacted countless students by exposing them to the various areas of finance
and has helped strengthen the club s Calgary industry network. Furthermore, over my past two
years with the club, I consistently worked with a diverse group of students to problem solve,
research markets and write articles, which strengthened my teamwork skills substantially. I also
realized that I am passionate about working with others to grow organizations, I hope to eventually
lead the HFC and help develop its footprint internationally into other major financial centers. This
will aide in growing Haskayne s alumni network further, and will serve as a resource for future
students to

  • 2. Goodbye Columbus Essay Sometimes there are two novels that have the same theme, and sometimes they have the same plot, but in the case of the two novels, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the novel Goodbye Columbus, by Philip Roth they explore the same dynamics of the chase of the American dream. In both novels there are similar themes, they both use the idea of sex and money as a form of power. Both novels can relate to each other because the authors decided to show how the pursuit of the American dream may not always be a good thing, and how sex and money can cause problems in that pursuit. Overall in both of the novels the reoccurring theme of sex, money and the search for the American dream is present and in both novels the authors show that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brenda also represents sex to Neil therefore she represents two of the major themes of the novel, sex and money. To Neil there are many differences in the Patimkin family that make them very different from his own. They are able to eat in the dining room instead of the kitchen. They have a maid that makes the meals and cleans up after them. They also have a refrigerator full of fruit that is always full. This is all the ideal life for Neil, and when you put Brenda in the mix you have Neil s perfect world. If he could become part of the Patimkin family he would have sex, money and in essence the American dream. Those three ideas are also present in the novel The Great Gatsby. In this novel the two worlds are divided by old and new money, instead of the idea of assimilation to society after immigration. In this novel, where you live determines your wealth, just as it did in the novel Goodbye Columbus. In The Great Gatsby the idea of wealth representing power is the most prevalent aspect of the novel. The title character Jay Gatsby, is wealthy and he lives in the new money side of town. The love of his life is Daisy Buchannan, and she lives on the old money side of town. Their love is similar to that of Neil and Brenda. They are symbols of two different worlds, yet they find love, but in both of cases the love does not end happy. • 3. Memory Retention Research Paper Research: Memory retention is essential to all human beings. It is a fundamental function of our brain: whether it be memorizing people s names, memorizing math formulas, or memorizing the location of the car keys. We all recognize the importance of memorization and we all seek ways to improve our memory retention skills. Many different parts of the brain control a person s memory, but the most important part is the frontal lobe. It controls working and short termmemory. Due to the processes of stimulus of the sensory memory which transmits to the frontal lobe, people can, on average, recall 7 items after looking at them for 15 seconds. The beneficial activity of walking also causes an improvement of creativity according to Dr. Oppezzo of Stanford University. Dr. Oppezzo created a matched pair experimental design using undergraduate student volunteers as subjects that tests the variable of walking versus sitting and inside walking versus outside walking. he conducted 3 experiments in which she compared tests of GAU (creative divergent thinking) and CRA (convergent thinking) using the variables of walking on a treadmill, sitting, walking then sitting, sitting then walking, sitting twice, and outdoors walking. For her last test she compared tests of creative analogy generation with the variables of sitting inside, walking on a treadmill inside, walking outside, and rolling on a wheelchair outside. In all of her findings, she saw an increase in creativity following or during the physical activity of walking. The increase in creativity she found was also independent of location of the test, meaning that being outdoors did not help or hinder memory retention skills when compared to results from indoors. This suggests that some physical aspect of walking stimulates the brain s memory system. But, more research needs to be conducted to understand the biological cause of this effect, which Dr. Oppezzo calls acute. She is unable to provide any scientifically based answers to the results of her experiment because it is still unclear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Development Of The Mammalian Central Nervous System Essay During normal development of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS), neural stem cells (NSC) give rise to neurons via process of neurogenesis (Kempermann et al., 2004; Zhao et al., 2008). Neurogenesis normally occurs in dentate gyrus (DG) region of the hippocampus and lateral ventricle of sub ventricular zone (SVZ) (Zhao et al., 2008). Hippocampal neurogenesisplays pivotal role in neurologic and psychiatric disorder like epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia and mood disorders (Antonova et al., 2004; Keller and Roberts, 2008; Lucassen et al., 2006; Zhao et al., 2008). Development of the nervous systemis complex, and includes multistep dynamic processes such as proliferation, differentiation, migration, expansion of axons and dendrites, synapse formation, myelination and programmed cell death (Rice and Barone, 2000). These processes required the coordinated expression of cellular and molecular events in a spatial and temporal manner during the braindevelopment (Rice and Barone, 2000; Rodier, 1994). Several growth factors and signal transduction cascades have been implicated in controlling NSC behavior in the developing brain (Faigle and Song, 2013). Among these, members of the Wnt family of secreted glycoprotein thought to be variably influence proliferation and lineage decisions of NSC and their progeny (Clevers et al., 2014). • 5. How Did Virginia Woolf Treat Women During her life, Virginia Woolf endured many acts of discrimination not based on the content of her character or the body of her work but based purely upon her gender. Through her years of schooling towards her ascension to literary fame she witnessed an astonishing difference in the treatment of men in college and women in college especially in terms of food. To show the difference in treatment Woolf uses her description of the meals as a metaphor of the difference of treatment between men and women in college as well as extending the metaphor to show that their treatment in college reflect how they are treated within society. Woolf first begins in each of the passages opening sentences describes the time the meal is taking place and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the male side, they finished their meal and headed to light a good cigarette and had no need to hurry this once again highlights the leisure enjoyed by males in this society despite working just as equally if not less than women. Woolf contrasts the men s leisure with the scrap[ing] [of] their chairs and hall [emptying] which obviously shows the women rushing in a sluggish manner to leave as if headed to do a menial task. With that point being made we can see that Woolf is bringing the social ties argument to the light where the males are meant not only to represent the males who control the social dominance but also the ultra wealthy who leisurely sit back and relax while the women on the other hand are forced to enjoy a subpar meal that was homely and plain then head begrudgingly back to work in some factory probably owned by one of the men enjoying their novelist s convention in passage one, thus Woolf makes not only a comment on women s treatment and how she s disgusted with it but also a broader critique on society and wealth disparity during the time period it was ... • 6. Dopamine Hypothesis The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a chronic, psychotic disorder in which the affected individual feels a disconnection from reality, chaotic thought patterns, delusions, hallucinations and various disturbances in behavioural, emotional and intellectual perception. Schizophrenia is often linked to an irregular balance of dopaminein the brain and defects of the frontal lobe (The American Heritage medical dictionary, 2007). The symptoms of schizophreniacan be broken down into two categories: negative symptoms and positive symptoms. The negative symptoms include an absence of normal function, including: alogia, anhedonia, depressed appearance and apathy (Ayd, 1995), however this essay will focus primarily on the positive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To treat these psychoses, anti psychotic medication is prescribed. Anti psychotic medication works by binding to a specific receptor in the brain, known as dopamine receptor D2 (Kapur, 2000). By blocking this receptor, symptoms of psychosis are controlled. As symptoms of stimulant psychosis are very similar to the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, anti psychotic medication is the preferred medication to treat affected individuals. Two types of anti psychotic medications have been developed, typical and atypical. Typical anti psychotics have a high potency and high affinity to D2 receptors, however this can cause extrapyramidal effects and Parkinsonism (Golan Tashjian, 2012). Atypical anti psychotics have a lower potency and low affinity to D2 receptors and less side effects. Therefore, anti psychotic medication must block an appropriate amount of D2 receptors as a deficiency of dopamine can cause extrapyramidal effects and even worsen the negative symptoms whereas an excess results in psychosis. A cross sectional neuroimaging study reveals that the link between D2 receptors and extrapyramidal side effects occurs only after 78% of D2 receptor occupancy (Kapur, ... • 7. Natural Gas Is A Non Renewable Resource Natural Gas Natural gas is a non renewable resource, meaning that it will not last forever. If the production of natural gas continues at the same rate, it will only last for approximately another 91 years. Natural gas is a power source used to power particular things in homes, for example heaters, hot water and stoves. The way this particular power source is produced/sourced is that at the bottom of the ocean, deceased animals and plants etc. otherwise called organic matter are found and can be broken down into the formation of natural gas through a series of wells and pipes, and delivered to homes and businesses and other places where natural gas is used through the pipes. Scientists are trying to find other resources for gas because they are aware that the current one won t last and that they are harming the environment and habitats of creatures in the sea through this procedure. This procedure is called Hydraulic Fracturing, otherwise known as fracking . Part of the fracking procedure is that a high water pressure is sent through tubes and pipes under water being forced onto different rocks. This water, however, contains several harmful chemicals that damage the organisms and animals and their habitats under water. Once the rock is cracked/ fractured, the oil and gas is carried back up the pipes. The air is also polluted in this procedure as the findings of the fracking process are relocated into either evaporators or into condensation tanks releasing dangerous ... The potato was their main source of food and money. With out the potato the Irish would have nothing. No one was prepared for what was about to happen in 1845, the beginning of the Great Irish PotatoFamine. The Irish Potato Famine was the worst tragedy in the history of Ireland. The outcome of the famine would result in hundreds of thousands dead, an failure of the economy in Ireland, and millions of emigrants forced to leave their home and country just to try to survive. This caused people to eat what ever they could get their hands on. People ate dogs, horses, birds, mushrooms, roots, flowers, and anything that was believed to have a nutritional value. It will take comprehensive discussion on Ben Jonson s The Alchemist and William Shakespeare s The Tempest . Jonson and Shakespeare were contemporaries with more immediately recognizable common ground between them than difference. They shared the same profession and brought forth their works from the matrix of common intellectual property. They appealed to the same audience and both gained popularity and esteem as accomplished playwrights. At the more social level, they were both struggling artists conscious of the need for patronage and support from their wealthier and more powerful peers. The distinction between I and him is emphasized by Jonson s assertion of an answer to Shakespeare s way of doing things. The quest for self knowledge has been integral to the structures and evolution of human society throughout history. During the early modem period, the classical maxim of nosce teipsum operated almost universally, not only as a prompt towards, but also as a goal of, both individual and communal achievement and actualization. At one level, Hamlet s tribute may be taken as an adumbration of the Renaissance engagement with the epistemological enquiries into the nature of man, and his place and function in the cosmic chain of being. What a piece of work is a man, How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals. And yet to me what is this quintessence of dust? Jonson explicitly bases their sense of the play s similarity upon theories of comedy that imply such affirmation. In Volpone and The Alchemist, Jonson sues irony to expose how far short of the ideal is the world of the play, and thus celebrates the ideal indirectly. If the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Character Analysis Of Shylock In Venice No one can argue that Shylock is one of the most complex and intriguing characters ever created in literature. He has unique traits that make him who he is. Shylock is a Jewish man in a majority Christian city named Venice. In the Middle Ages usury was banned to Christians by the church and for that reason usuryor the illegal act of lending money, was controlled by the Jews. Shylockwas one of the most prominent moneylenders in Venice. However in the play Shylock is portrayed as an angry man who is hated by the Venetians. They are not a fond of his angry mannerisms, despise him for his religion, occupation, etc. No one can deny that Shylock is motivated by money, but one can argue that he is also motivated by vengeance.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anther example where Shylock fits his archetype perfectly is in Act IV, Scene 1. As we know, Shylock is the antagonist in the play and as we know, all villains must pay for their heinous actions eventually. In this scene Shylock is essentially stripped of everything he owns. Half of his wealth must go to the city of Venice while the other half ends up going to his daughter Jessica. While some might feel bad for him at this moment, we must think of the saying what comes around goes around. In Act III Shylock is merciless and refuses to take any form of payment in exchange for Antonio. All he cares about is getting a pound of Antonio s flesh. Keeping Antonio in a cell and essentially embarrassing him completely, even though Antonio is on his knees begging for mercy, Shylock refuses to let go of what he wants, the pound of flesh. Like Amanda Bailey says in her work Shylock and the Slaves: Owing and Owing in The Merchant of Venice, Shylock sees the desperation of an insolvent debtor [Antonio] (Bailey). He is merciless and essentially wants to prove a point. However, this merciless act comes back to haunt Shylock when Portia goes after him in court. In the end, Shylock loses and is miserable, something that happens to all villains and antagonists. That s why he fits so perfectly with that villain archetype. • 13. Metacognitive Self Regulation Rationale The purpose of this study is to investigate whether metacognitive and self regulation interventions improve mathematical achievement in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although self regulation has an ambiguous meaning, recently it has been referred to as the ability to manage one s behavior, so as to withstand impulses, maintain focus, and undertake tasks, even if there are other more enticing alternatives available (Boyd et al., 2005, p. 3). Jarvela and Jarvenoja, (2011), Zimmerman, (2008) stated that self regulation is essential to the learning process and Wolters (2011) suggested that it can aid individuals, especially secondary school students in developing more effective learning habits. Self regulation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to this particular research on the development of self regulation in children many studies have investigated the possible effects of metacognitive and self regulation strategies on academia. For example, Labuhn et al., (2010) reported that students that received SRL assistance and guidance were more likely to exhibit higher levels of self efficacy towards their academic ability resulting in improved performance within the classroom. It was also concluded that self regulated learners performed at a higher standard in comparison to students that did not receive SRL guidance (Labuhn et al., 2010). Additionally Researchers, Graham Harris (2000) and Kistner et al. (2010) found that SRL results in improved performance within a learning environment and can also limit academic deficiency in many students. Self regulated learning strategies and interventions must be aided by metacognitive reflection and feedback from teachers and at times from peers through group tasks etc. (Dignath and BГјttner, 2008). Although there are countless studies investigating metacognition and self regulation strategies, those that address individuals with behavioural disorders are scarce, especially in regards to children. The reasoning for this is not only due to the numerous challenges regarding the formulation of self regulatory abilities in children (Harris Schmidt, 1997), but also due to the significant problems with attention, inhibition and impulsivity that children with ADHD exhibit which makes formulation of self regulatory an incredibly difficult task. This study therefore aims to provide further information and understanding on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cross gender roles and cross dressing are essential not only for the inherent humour of the situation but also for the advancment of the plot. English Renaissance stereotypes of women and men and their various roles and responsibilities in society are reflected in Shakespeare. What sets Shakespeare apart is the fact that he also challenges, and at times even breaks down those stereotypes especially in his comedies. Hamlet may proclaim Frailty thy name is woman , but even the merest of character analyses of Portia in The Merchant of Venice, or Viola in The Twelfth Night conclusively proves that they are anything but. Men naturally had more powerful roles to play both socially as well as politically. In Renaissance society, men were expected to engage in public affairs, to be talkers, make decisions, and on the whole be far more active compared to women. They led aggressive, self satisfying, and (supposedly) duty bound lives. Men controlled the positions of powerful positions ranging from family to the state. Ironically, the monarch was a female, who was the most powerful person of the land. GENDER AND THE TWELFTH NIGHT: Shakespeare s greatness and enduring popularity cannot be attributed to a single or even a small set of factors. It is undoubtedly the case however that one of Shakespeare s greatest traits has been to unshackle himself from the limitations of his age. He transcends the stereotypical views of Renaissance society as he portrays women as more than passive vessels. Women are often equal to or sometimes even superior in their intelligence wit and vivacity compared to their male counterparts. Viola, the resourceful and practical female protagonist of The Twelfth Night stands out in this regard. Robert Walton in Frankenstein is similar to the Wedding Guest from Rime of the Ancient Mariner, with Victor Frankenstein playing the role of the mariner. However, once Coleridge teaches his character the lesson of the inherent beauty in nature, the Mariner learns that all creatures are beautiful. In Shelley s piece, which also has this theme, it seems that Frankenstein really never learns this lesson, while the creature does seem to grasp this concept. I beheld those I loved spend vain sorrow upon the graves of William and Justine, the first hapless victims to my unhallowed arts (Shelley 79). When he made this creature, there is no way that he thought he would kill two of his closest loved ones, and later kill more. However, it happened and Shelley is showing us how devastating the effects can be. Similarly, in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Mariner also suffers for a single, unthinking act. Say thy prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk, and no harm will come to thee. And his intentions are quite as evil as hers. As Goodman turns the corner at the meeting house, his remorseful thoughts exalt the goodness of his wife: What a wretch am I, to leave her on such an errand! She talks of dreams, too. Methought, as she spoke, there was trouble in her face, as if a dream had warned her what work is to be done tonight. But, no, no! twould kill her to think it. Well; she s a blessed angel on earth; and after this one night, I ll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven. Ironically, Goodman regards her goodness as unimpeachable and sublime. Spain and the Balkans came under a long period of Muslim rule as did Iran and the middle eastern countries, which were completely subsumed. Indian culture showed remarkable vitality and survived. Perhaps this was a positive aspect of the rigid codification of laws and the caste system. China and Japan were geographically isolated and never faced large scale invasion from Islam, which anyway spread in Indonesia , the Philippines and malaysis, with the waning of Indian power. East Asia was in fact an important sphere of Indian cultural export, with the Srivijaya Empire, the Majpahit Empire and so on ruling for long. Here as Indian power fragmented and declined. Islam and then European commercialist colonialism stepped in. And yet much of Indian culture survived, in Indochina and Indonesia among other places, and Bali is still Hindu. Indeed India did expand as a culture, via Buddhism all over East Asia and Ceylon, where Indian sages spread the word of Buddha. Asoka was a self conscious cultural proselytizer. • 42. Creole Hybridity in Literature Jamaican patois is not an official language, which is the same for most if not all languages are not, although recently, there are some creole dictionaries and Haitian Creole is being taught in schools. People tend to have a negative perception of a creole and thus, the people who speak and chose to write in this creole languageare often lumped into a box. There is a stigma attached to it, and people often say that it is the language of the poor lower class of the country. Growing up in St. Lucia, I saw how this is true, people are often embarrassed by their parent who spoke creole, or they as children where forbidden to speak creole as to avoid being stereotyped. The language expresses the history of the Caribbeanand the hybridity that emerges through language. In the diaspora, people depend on creating a space of home in the host country and language is an important part of this space. The connection immigrants feel when they come into contact with literature that features a language of their native homeland offers them their own space in the literary world, and a way for their stories to be told. The writers and people who use creole are confirming their identities as a merger of multiple influences. They use the language despite the stigma and fight to maintain the culture by doing so language is part of one s identity. Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated Google in California and they opened a bank account for the established company (Google Inc., 2013). The first office space they started in was in Susan Wojcicki s garage on Santa Margarita Ave., Menlo Park, California. February 1999, Larry and Sergey moved out of Susan s garage and moved to 165 University Avenue in Palo Alto. Then, they were able to hire only eight employees to start off their growing business. In August, they are able to open up a Mountain View location at 2400 Bayshore, south of Stanford University and near some city named Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and San Jose. • 44. Sherwood Community Reflection Community: I have been involved with the Sherwood Community Association (SCA) for approximately 6 years. Within the organization, I am responsible for representing the interests of nearly 5000 Sherwood residents, leading the efforts for corporate sponsorship and co leading a committee that works with municipal and provincial representatives to provide aesthetic upgrades to the community. My impact has helped the SCA develop a footprint within the industry, raise historic levels of funding to better support our constituents and has helped obtain aesthetic upgrades to more than an acre of community land. It has been an incredibly humbling experience to work alongside a group of dedicated individuals to service our community. Through this, I came to understand the value of resilience; I realized that life consists of many obstacles and what makes a great leader is their capacity to learn from failures and use them to come back stronger and more prepared to deal with future challenges.
