Nematodes are invertebrate roundworms that inhabit marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. They comprise the phylum Nematoda (or Nemata) which includes parasites of plants and of animals, including humans, as well as species that feed on bacteria, fungi, algae, and on other nematodes. Four out of every five multicellular animals on the planet are nematodes (Platt, 1994). Cobb (1914) calculated that if the nematodes resident in a single acre of soil near San Antonio, Texas, USA, were to proceed in head-to-tail procession to Washington D.C., some 2000 miles away, the first nematode would reach Washington before the rear of the procession left San Antonio!
Ghost Worms in the Sky

The majority of nematodes are microscopic, averaging less than a millimeter in length, but some of the animal parasites are quite large and readily visible to the naked eye. The animal and plant parasites are of direct importance in agriculture, the environment, and in human health; however, most nematodes in the environment are not parasites. Nematodes that feed on other organisms are important participants in the cycling of minerals and nutrients in the ecosystem that is fundamental to other biological activity. Some of these nematodes may have major roles in decomposition, including biodegradation of toxic compounds. In fact, the incidence of certain nematode species is sometimes used as an indicator of environmental quality. Insect-parasitic nematodes can be of importance in regulating insect populations, and are being used in the biological control of insect pests.
The developmental biology of one nematode species, Caenorhabditis elegans, is better characterized than that of any other multicellular organism. C. elegans is studied as a model system in molecular and developmental biology, and is providing insights into many other areas of biology and medicine.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

ADULT
FEMAL :- White 8-13mm in size .
Fusiform body with a long , thin, sharply
tapering tail. Cuticular extension of head.
The greater part of the body is occupied by
the uterus filled with eggs.
MALE :- Like female, but about 1/3 to 1/2 size of
female
The tail is curved, it is rarely seen.

10. LIFE CYCLE
•E.Vermicularis is an organism that primarily lives in
ileum and cecum.
•Once E.vermicularis eggs are ingested, they take
about 1 to 2 months to develop into adult worm
which happens in the small intestine.
•The female adult worms and ova migrate to the anal
area mostly at night time and deposit thousands of
eggs in the prianal area.
www.faunafondness.com
11. •This migration causes a lot of itching and pruritus.
•Eggs hatch near the anal area causing itching,
scratching and this causes prianal pruritus.
•This leads to contamination of the fingers and results
in ingestion of the eggs (autoinfection) and restarting
of the life cycle of worm.
•Occasionally, the larvae migrate back into the rectum
and to the small intestine and begin the life cycle(retro
infection).
www.faunafondness.com
14. PATHOGENESIS
•Enterobiasis is the medical condition of being infection
with pinworm.
•Asymptomatic other than itching of the anus, due to
excretions of the female worm.
•Children may experience loss of appetite, abdominal
pain, insomnia and restlessness are the usual symptoms
associated with pin worm infections.
•Virginities may occur in young girls with pinworm
infections.
www.faunafondness.com
15. TREATMENT
Treatment consist of the following antihelminthic
medication:
ALBENDAZOL: Given on an empty stomach, a 400mg,
one-time dose followed by a repeat dose in 2 weeks.
MEBENDAZOLE: A 100mg, one-time dose followed by
a repeat dose in two weeks.
Other medications which have been used to treat
enterobiasis are ivermectin and piperazine, although
the latter has lower efficacy and higher toxicity.
www.faunafondness.com
16. PREVENTION
•Washing hands regularly, particularly before
eating, after changing diapers.
•Taking a bath early in the morning to prevent egg
contamination should be encouraged in at-risk
patients.
•Trimming of fingernails should be encouraged.
•Children should be advised to avoid sucking their
fingers and touching their perianal area.
www.faunafondness.com
17. CONCLUSION
•Enterobiasis is a commonly encountered problem in
family practice. School age children show the highest
incidence of infection, though both adults and younger
children may have enterobiasis.
• The commonest symptom in older children and adults
is pruritis ani, but in young children the condition may
present only as a non-specific disturbance in sleep
pattern.
• Though usually susceptible to drug therapy, an
appreciation of the particulars of the parasites life cycle
is important in preventing recurrence of infection.
