8.1 Conductors, Insulators and
Semiconductors
8.1 Conductors, Insulators and
Semiconductors
Solids conduct only when empty states with higher energies
exist close to the initial states of the electrons.
Thus conduction takes place only in partially occupied bands or
the energy gap is small.
The properties of a solid is determined by the following factor:
1. The occupation state of the topmost band.
2. The forbidden energy gap
3. The density of states in the top most band
4. The presence of impurities in the crystal

CONDUCTORS : Conductors are the substances which conduct at
all temperatures except at zero Kelvin.

These substances conduct either because the valence band and
the conduction band are overlapping or the topmost band is
partially filled.

As no energy is required to make the electron move from
valence to conduction band therefore they conducts at low
temperature

SESSION-8
INSULATORS
INSULATORS: These are the substances which don’t conduct.
This phenomenon can be explained on the basis of energy band
theory. The valence band and the conduction band in a crystal
are separated by an energy difference of the order of 6eV or
more. Such a large amount of energy cannot be supplied using
thermal means therefore it is not possible to move an electron
from valence to the conduction band.
It is incorrect to say that electrons in
an insulator are not free to move
around. In fact, they do. However,
as there are as many electrons as
there are states, the electrons only
trade places resulting in no net movement
of charges

SESSION-8
SEMICONDUCTORS
SEMICONDUCTORS: These are the substances, which are insulators at low
temperature, and a start conducting as the temperature is increased.
At low temperatures the valence band of the semiconductors is filled
whereas the conduction band is empty. The energy difference between the
valence band and the conduction band is of the order of 1eV. This energy can
be supplied using thermal means.
If the temperature of the semiconductor is
increased the electron jumps from valence to
the conduction band resulting in electrons
being present in the conduction band and
holes in the valence band. Thus current
begins to flow in semiconductor.

SESSION-8 8.1 Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors 8.1 Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors Solids conduct only when empty states with higher energies exist close to the initial states of the electrons. Thus conduction takes place only in partially occupied bands or the energy gap is small. The properties of a solid is determined by the following factor: 1. The occupation state of the topmost band. 2. The forbidden energy gap 3. The density of states in the top most band 4. The presence of impurities in the crystal

Example: Na

SESSION-8 8.1 Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors 8.1 Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors These substances conduct either because the valence band and the conduction band are overlapping or the topmost band is partially filled.

SESSION-8 8.1 Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors 8.1 Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors As no energy is required to make the electron move from valence to conduction band therefore they conducts at low temperature

SESSION-8 INSULATORS INSULATORS: These are the substances which don’t conduct. This phenomenon can be explained on the basis of energy band theory. The valence band and the conduction band in a crystal are separated by an energy difference of the order of 6eV or more. Such a large amount of energy cannot be supplied using thermal means therefore it is not possible to move an electron from valence to the conduction band. It is incorrect to say that electrons in an insulator are not free to move around. In fact, they do. However, as there are as many electrons as there are states, the electrons only trade places resulting in no net movement of charges
  • 7. 7 ENGINEERING PHYSICS Mr. Gouri Kumar Sahu Sr. Lecturer in Physics. 7 ENGINEERING PHYSICS Mr. Gouri Kumar Sahu Sr. Lecturer in Physics. SESSION-8 SEMICONDUCTORS SEMICONDUCTORS: These are the substances, which are insulators at low temperature, and a start conducting as the temperature is increased. At low temperatures the valence band of the semiconductors is filled whereas the conduction band is empty. The energy difference between the valence band and the conduction band is of the order of 1eV. This energy can be supplied using thermal means. If the temperature of the semiconductor is increased the electron jumps from valence to the conduction band resulting in electrons being present in the conduction band and holes in the valence band. Thus current begins to flow in semiconductor.
