Electronic toll collection (ETC) aims to eliminate delays at toll roads by electronically collecting tolls from registered vehicles without needing to stop. FASTag is India's ETC system, using RFID technology to automatically deduct toll fees from linked accounts as vehicles pass through toll plazas. Automatic vehicle identification tags containing unique IDs are affixed to windshields and read by roadside antennas, with the information sent to central computers to identify accounts for fee deduction. ETC provides benefits like reduced travel times and emissions from less waiting, as well as incentives like toll discounts for users.

4. Electronic toll collection
Electronic toll collection (ETC) aims to eliminate the delay on toll
roads by collecting tolls electronically. ETC determines whether the cars
passing are enrolled in the program, alerts enforcers for those that are
not, and electronically debits the accounts of registered car owners
without requiring them to stop.

5. FASTag[1] is an electronic toll collection system in India,
operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).It
employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for
making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings
account linked to it. It is affixed on the windscreen of the
vehicle and enables to drive through toll plazas without
stopping for transactions.

6. Automatic Vehicle Identification tags
are electronically encoded with unique
identification numbers.

7. Roadside readers or antennas are located
along the road, in overhead structures or apart
of the toll collection booth.

8. These antennas emit radio frequency
signals across the freeway lanes.

9. As the vehicle approaches a tag reader
site, the roadside antenna emits a signal
that is reflected back by the tag located
on the windshield.

10. The identification number is read and is sent to a
roadside reader unit where it receives a time, date
and location. A central computer uses the code
to identify the account and the cost is deducted
from the customer’s account.
