Social And Economic Development Of Rio De Janeiro
3) The Dashed Hopes of UPP Social (and its counterparts) The overall aim of the UPP is to integrate
the favelas to the larger city (World Bank 2012). Once the community was pacified, the government
could enter and provide goods and services. Therefore, since its origin, the program UPP Social was
subordinated to the UPPs, meaning that only pacified favelas would receive it (Bentsi Enchill,
Goodenough and Berger 2015). In partnership with UN Habitat, UPP Social was meant to accomplish
the following aims: contribute to the consolidation of the peace process and the promotion of local
citizenship in pacified territories; promote urban, social and economic development; carry out the full
integration of these areas into the city (Rio Mais ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This explains why they overwhelmingly support Lula and Dilma Rousseff in the current political and
economic crisis, unlike the rest of the population (Caulyt and Malkes 2016; Favela 247 2016).
However, due to the rising living costs in the pacified favelas (Oosterban and Van Hijk 2015), the
Bolsa Família does not provide a support that would be sufficient to overcome clientelism. Moreover,
the Bolsa Família is often blamed for not giving voice to civil society (Hevia 2011), therefore
participatory policies are generally preferred. Residents Awareness and Participation in the
Elaboration of Projects Residents are overall unaware of the activities undertaken by UPP Social.
They associate it with social events organized by the UPPs. As a consequence, many residents did not
want to take part in the activities, as they associated UPP Social with the police. To overcome the
misunderstandings, the program was renamed Rio + Social in 2014 (Fernandes 2014). However, the
change in name did not improve the services offered, and residents views are not taken into account
when mapping needs of the community. Evidence from interviews showed that few residents could
describe was doing for their community. Indeed, it appears that the program is limited to the
organization of social events. For example, Mirian, Human

John Swales Discourse Community Examples
A discourse community is defined as groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to
achieve these goals. John Swales is a professor in linguistics and received his Ph. D. from Cambridge
University. John Swales s Six Criteria is a perfect setup for a discourse community, and some of the
steps are setting a common goal, mechanisms of intercommunication; provide information and
feedback, genres, lexis, and threshold level of members. James Lee is a professor who taught
linguistics at Stanford and Northwestern University. Gee s idea of a discourse community is a

I asked Hilgenbrink, What types of feedback and information do you have to give to the community or
police headquarters? He said First off we have to write citations to enforce the law and then we have
to talk to our supervisor about any laws that could be removed. Citations involve a lot of paperwork
and this is one my least favorite things to do. They have to give parking, speeding, and all other type
of fines to bring revenue into the city and to enforce the law. These citations consist of two pages of
content pertaining to the law that an individual has broken. If the community has a problem with a law
they can discuss it with the city council or it can be discussed at town hall meetings.
Genres are types of texts that are recognizable to the reader and writers, and meet the needs of the
rhetorical situation in which they function. (Swales 467) I asked Hilgenbrink, What texts or books do
police officers use every day? He said I think the text or book that we use every day is the laws that
we enforce. This is pretty simple because the laws are stated in the state s constitution which the
police officers inforce. Genre is crucial to the development of a discourse

Analysis Of Restricted Boltzmann Machines
Analysis of RNNs revealed that the hidden to output function, hidden to hidden transition, and input to
hidden function must be made deeper [3]. Based on the following input sequence: x = (x1; : : : ; xT), a
standard RNN is responsible for computing the vector sequence: h = (h1; : : : ; hT) as well as the
output vector sequence: y = (y1; : : : ; yT) using two equations (depicted below) from t = 1 to T [3].
(1) ht = H(Wxhxt+Whhht 1+bh) (2) yt = Whyht+by H. Restricted Boltzmann Machines An RBM is a
specialized Boltzmann Machine comprised of two respective layers, a layer of visible and hidden
units, without hidden hidden and visible visible connections. Each hidden and visible unit within the

Apothéloz s proposal is of importance in understanding the artificial intelligence models of

the presenter feels about the subject material being presented. This analysis helps the NLP formulate a

sentiments of the sentence by giving positive or negative points to each word. Points are then summed
up for each sentence and based on that score it is deemed either positive, negative, or neutral. But
sentiments are often very subtle and cannot be detected using simple point analysis [1]. To better grasp
sentiments in NSL computer scientist once again turned to the deep learning process and developed a
tree structured long short term memory analysis (LSTM). LSTM combines deep learning with the
points system. After the deep learning process has assigned meaning to a word it is given a weight

Personal Reflection Of Personal Goals In The Honey Whiskey...
When I began pursuing my MFA in writing, I knew what I wanted my thesis to be, I just needed some
guidance in order to get there. I had completed my first novel, Seeking Signs, which weaves a
narrative around an Iowa crime in 1913 and won the Midwest Book Award for historical fiction from
the Midwest Independent Publishers Association in 2013. The research and writing that went into it
caused me to fall in love with the process and look for another challenge, one even more complex than
the first. Through my MFA pursuits, I wanted to hone my research skills, improve my ability to
establish vivid historical imagery, and gain a solid foothold on the voice necessary to tell my next tale.
My goals for the second novel, The Honey Whiskey Murders, began with exploring untapped research
avenues. While I had a plot in mind, I knew it was important to stay open to the unexpected places the
information took me. The research that went into the project was so entertaining, it was sometimes
difficult to force myself to sit down and write.
I read Murder and Mayhem in Clinton County, Iowa, a book published by the Clinton County
historical museum which includes a compilation of all newspaper articles covering both solved and
unsolved murders from the area dating back to the mid 1800s. The case of Homer and Rosela
Brownfield is one of many unsolved murders in my home county. The Brownfield murders made
headlines as far away as Ohio; these reports sensationalized the crime with statements

Chapter 5 Qualitative research results and discussion
To analyse the objectives of this study further, interview questions were ready for opinion leaders,
which include journalists, staffs of the management team and PR practitioners. Only key sentences or
words of discussion were chosen due to the word limitation, the full translated transcripts are attached
at Appendix B. The findings of interview have three parts, which related to the three research
questions.
A: For the question of the impact of opinion leaders on Weibo, the viewpoints from interviewees all
admitted the leading roles of opinion leaders, but their influences are limited.
1) Most interviewees agreed opinion leaders have the influence on fans, but they pointed out the
impact has limitations.
Anonymous manager: Opinion leaders have the impacts on fans communities, but the impact has the
limitations.
Gu Yue: Of course they have some impacts on their areas [...] (but) it is easier for them to guide
followers to do something more than change the other s opinion.
Yang Juntao: Opinion leaders have the ability to influence or even change followers opinions.
Anonymous PR practitioner: Opinion leaders generally control the directions of discourse in fan
groups , but different opinion leaders have their own position
Yang Jie: The impacts of opinion leaders are not constant.

Pros And Cons Of Being Outside The Field Of Dermatology
SOCIETAL CONCERNS There could be a lot of social issues when it comes to dermatology because
it deals with a person s skin and that is what everyone sees. In today s society, the way a person looks
means everything. That s good for a dermatologist because their job is to get rid of flaws in the skin,
however, this will continue the trend of looks meaning everything to people instead of a person s
personality or talents and gifts. This could cause people to have lower self esteem, problems in social
settings, or even loss of motivation to do certain things. There is an article about how adolescents with
skin conditions, like eczema, develop mental health problems. These kids are very self conscious and
do not want to be involved in any social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Based on the negative consequences of the trends and issues, I believe there are ways to prevent them
from happening and improve some of the problems with the technology. With the issue of the internet
and administrative tools, patients data should be kept private and should not get deleted or lost. In the
future when I am in my career, to prevent these things from happening I will make sure when I am
processing a patient s information I will take my time to make sure it is saved in the appropriate
folders. I would also create a security system for the patients so their information could not get leaked
on the internet for others to see. There are different forms of security software that can be installed on
computers to prevent things like documentation of a patient s file getting leaked. Technology could be
complicated, however, if you are a physician, you should have some type of understanding of how to
use it. Since there are a lot of people who do not understand how to use certain technology, I would
have educational sessions for those that need to learn how to use the technology for certain
procedures. I would also explain why these forms of technology are important for use. Education is
very important and it is needed for people that want to succeed and do certain things in their lives. I
would make sure that

Anorexia Nervos A Psychological, Familial And...
Anorexia nervosa results from a complex interplay between biological, psychological, familial and
sociocultural factors. Alice s development of anorexia nervosa can be viewed through a
psychoanalytic lens. Many of Alice s needs were not met or interpreted correctly in early childhood by
her parents, particularly her mother causing Alice to develop ego deficiencies in identity and need for
control. This thought is supported by Hilde Bruch (1974) who regarded anorectics as being in a
struggle for control and their own identity the pursuit of thinness was seen as a critical part of such a
struggle . Bruch considered that there were two main characteristics of parents that made the

In his paper Three Essays on The Theory of Sexuality (Freud, 1962) brings nourishment and sexuality
firmly together suggesting eating was a substitute for sexual activity and therefore not eating was a
way of repressing sexual urges. In conjunction with this girls could avoid development of an adult
body hold off/extinguish menstruation, avoid breast, hips and other womanly features further delaying
independence from the mother. This mentality is clearly evident in Alice in her avoidance of sexual
exploration by self or other in conjunction with focus on and loathing of body parts associated with
womanhood impossibly wide hips, obnoxious bosom and boxy curves. Alice s first restriction of food
correlated with the onset of puberty and her father infidelity/parents separation, this loss of control
over changes to body and changes to family system caused Alice ego to create defenses and manifests
itself in a control of food and weight to return to a time previous to the offending event(s).

Liberal, John Ikenberry And The American Liberal World Order
In Liberal Leviathan John Ikenberry argues that the American led liberal hegemonic order has reached
a major shift in its authority within the liberal order. In the last two chapters of the book, Ikenberry
argues that the era of unipolar hegemony for the United States is ending, and that it will eventually
have to re negotiate its balance of power with other emerging states. Critics believe that the American
liberal world order is no longer serving its original purpose, and is becoming a more imperial order
that is beginning to disintegrate. Ikenberry also highlights that there are many states that could rival
the overall hegemony of the United States. Overall the last two chapters of the book argue that the
United States needs to consider taking a new pathway so that the liberal order can accurately serve its
role for the challenges ahead. Ikenberry argues that there are many dilemmas within the organization
of the international world order. The liberal order is defined by its openness and its rule based order.
Order is maintained in these institutions when states agree to follow the rules set by these institutions.
The liberal order has sought to establish its rules in a non biased system that will not discriminate
other states, so that the entire institution can agree on these regulations. However, this has raised many
serious dilemmas . There seems to be concern of how the balance of power operates. Ikenberry argues
that the international order has been put into place

Myself Autobiography
I may seem like an average teenager. And like any other, I have an annoying eight year old brother and
a strict set of parents. I am a girl who writes in a blue spotted diary just three times a month, and
totally immersed in reading science fiction books. Getting dressed for the day would be me wearing
some sort of team shirt, most likely the New York Giants or the New York Yankees. I have a voracious
appetite for science. When my birthday or Christmas rolls around, I beg my parents to get me some
sort of robotic kit and coding to play around with. But even though I may seem like an average teen,
one thing that separates me from others is that I have grit. Math has not always come easy for me. I
was disappointed when I learned that I didn t make it into pre algebra, and all my other friends did. I
landed in Accelerated Math. The lessons that were taught were things that I already learned at my free
time at home, and I felt very bored. But with the help of my parents, I decided to push myself into
Algebra, learning that I could get there in seventh grade. I remember bringing about a dozen algebra
books from the library, just trying to understand the basics of algebra. I was elated to find out that I
got bumped into Algebra that year, but I very quickly found myself struggling. Before, I would never
touch the textbook to do any problems and I would always get an A+. But it was a cold slap in the face
when I got into Algebra. I remember when I had my first few quizzes, I

Don t Take My Word For Yourself
You know I think that it just might be but... don t take my word for it read on and decide for yourself, I
personally own two GameCube consoles a purple coloured one and the other is a platinum one and at
some point I may go for the missing black one just to be a little cheeky... nah if I was to be cheeky I
would already have one of the extremely rare pearl ones in my sights.
A Little bit of History.
We all know the GameCube did not last very long as the competing consoles had more support and
many more developers churning out titles and managed to force Nintendo to pack the GameCube in
and move on to try a newer concept but before that happened the guys and gals at Nintendo tried to
drum up sales by signing exclusive rights to some franchises, as a result of that attempt to boost sales
we saw the Resident Evil series rebooted and new titles added exclusively on the GameCube as a deal
was signed with Capcom for exclusive GameCube releases and also Metal Gear Solid The Twin
Snakes was a massive deal along with a few others but it was not enough to boost sales and in the end
they just packed it in, of course the rival systems had some serious firepower of their own with the
likes of Kill zone, Gran Turismo, (PlayStation) Halo, (Xbox) and of course Grand Theft Auto on both.
The GameCube was also the smallest of the three systems which a lot of gamers did not like, I
personally love the fact that the console is small but most of the community did not and at just 11cm

Essay about Phonics and Whole Language
Phonics and Whole Language A great debate whether the phonetic approach or whole language
approach should be used in the classroom has been occurring since the early nineteen thirties, and
there has not been a definite decision on which approach should be used to teach in the classroom. To
understand this debate, one must first understand the differences between whole language and phonics
learning.
The Definition of Phonics
Many people are confused by the term phonics, because the term can literally have two meanings. As
Miriam Balmuth explains, in the historically earlier sense, the phonics of written language are the
letters and spelling patterns of that language s alphabet and the speech sounds they represent put ...

Look and Say dominated the school system as a result of a strategic marketing plan carried out by the
publisher (Schafely, 1996).
Time for a Change?
The school systems have had educational backgrounds molded after whole language, and its time for a
phonics approach. It is now more crucial than ever for a change in the system. It would be impossible
to expect the educational system to completely change the way children are learning to read, but the
system must make small, quick changes over a short period of time to encompass the use of the
phonics approach. Not all children have the same learning capabilities, and that is one of the main
arguments against phonics. Many people in opposition say that not all children can learn from the
phonics approach. What people opposed to phonics do not understand is that phonics can be
incorporated into the learning process along with whole language to ensure a balance and complete
understanding of the English language (Unkown, 1994). With whole language as the basis to the
learning process, I believe that the schools are giving out good grade cards to children who are good at
guessing and memorizing words. With this in place, parents don t realize that their children are being
taught to guess instead of learning to read properly. It seems as though the schools have placed more
priority on self esteem and appraisal than on literacy. It has come to a point where

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Passages
I want them to show me, so I can feel it, too. I want them to be able to do whatever they want around
me. And if they do something I don t like, I ll tell them (pg. 393).
This passage near the ending of the book is very important for Charlie. Sam tells Charlie that if he
likes her, he should be open to her, and if he wants to date her, he should ask her. Also, this reveals a
change in Charlie after Sam tells him this; if he is uncomfortable with something, he will tell them that
instead of being shy about it. For example, when Patrick kisses Charlie, he is uncomfortable with it,
but because Patrick is his friend, he lets him do it. After what Sam tells Charlie, next time he will most
likely be more open to Patrick and tell him he is uncomfortable with what he is doing to him. All in
all, this passage is important, because it expresses that Charlie is changing from a once awkward and
shy person to a more open and direct person.
Charlie, you re one of the most gifted people I ve ever known. And I don t mean in terms of my other

Metaphors and Repetition in Do Not Go Gentle Into That...
Metaphors and Repetition in Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
In Dylan Thomas Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, the speaker is a son talking to his aging
father and pleading with him to fight against death. The son knows that death is the inevitable end to
every life, but feels one should not give up to death too easily. By using metaphor, imagery, and
repetition, Thomas reinforces the son s message that aging men see their lives with sudden clarity and
realize how they might have lived happier, more productive lives. These men rail against fate, fighting
for more time to set things right.
The son uses dark and the end of day as metaphors for death. He ... Show more content on

Wise men know that death is appropriate, but they do not embrace it. These wise men fight death
because they feel their words have not been adequate enough to touch or illuminate others. The son
creates a visual image of the inadequacy wise men feel upon realizing their words have not
enlightened others their words had forked no lightning. The son also mentions good men who do not
die peacefully. These men despair that their feeble deeds did not accomplish enough. Even though
they were good men, they feel they could have done so much more if given the time.
The son next tells his father how wild and grave men also struggled with death. Wild men spent their
lives frivolously, wishing time on its way. They learn when it is too late that they hurried time too fast
and now they cannot recapture what they so wantonly spent. Their lives were foolishly wasted. The
son also mentions grave or serious men who review their lives with a swift lucidity when death is
upon them. These solemn, sober men now realize life could have been more joyous had they been a
little more blind. If life is taken a little less seriously, one could blaze like meteors and be gay.
Repetition at the end of each stanza is effectively used to reinforce the message to fight back against
death. The son implores his father to hang on any way he can and begs him to use joy or tears or anger
to remain in this life. Other men, be they wise or frivolous, serious or

Huntingtons Disease Essay
Huntington s Disease
Huntington s disease, also known as Huntington s chorea is a genetic disorder that usually shows up in
someone in their thirties and forties, destroys the mind and body and leads to insanity and death within
ten to twenty years. The disease works by degenerating the ganglia (a pair of nerve clusters deep in the
brain that controls movement, thought, perception, and memory) and cortex by using energy
incorrectly. The brain will starve the neurons (brain cells), and sometimes make them work harder
than usual, causing extreme mental stress. The result is jerky, random, uncontrollable, rapid movement
such as grimacing of the face, flailing of arms and legs, and other such movement. This is known as
chorea. Huntington s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And living the rest of your life in depression.
Some 30,000 Americans are currently suffering for this genetic disorder. Named in 1872 for George
Huntington the New York Doctor who first wrote down it s devestating symtoms, Huntingtons disease
up to now was a silent time bomb.
13,000 people, the largest known concentration of sufferers from Huntington s
Disease, live in the Lake Maracaibo region of Venezuela. The origins of this gene pool has been traced
back to the 1800 s to a woman named Maria Concepcion.
It was from blood samples of these people that scientists became extraordinarily lucky and isolated the
genetic marker that shows the presence of this disorder.
Today, it is believed that Maria obtained the disease when she was birthed by a european sailor.
Since it was first recorded by George Huntington, a Long Island doctor,
Huntington s disease had remained fairly low key. No one heard about it until it infected Woodie
Guthrie, A famous folk singer from the 1920 s who showed symptoms of the disease. In 1967, he died.
This put Huntington s Disease on the map, but it still was not well known. But, before Woodie guthrie
died, he had a son, Arlo Guthrie. He, too became a famous folk singer, this time from the
Seventies. He became extremely famous, but had to live with the fact that he has a 50% chance of
having the disorder. That aroused huge public interest and made the disease well known.

Essay On Use And Value Renewable Resources
5. Use And Value Renewable Resources And Services
We all know by now that fossil fuel is unsustainable. The best way to shift to a renewable source is to
use resources and services that originate from plants, animals and the environment. It is also important
to use locally sourced material as often as possible. It makes more sense to build a stone house on a
rocky mountainside than on a barren plain. It s about using what we have around us to the best ability
rather than be a part of a consumerist society.

Climate change is one of our largest problems, which we will have to face eventually. Similarly, there
are many things that exist today that may not tomorrow. Learning to adapt is vital to continue living a
sustainable life.
An Example Of Using The Principles
Let s consider a bio gas drum to supply cooking gas to a household. Observe and interact by noticing
the cows feeding cycle, quantity of cow dung, location to place drum etc. Catch and store energy by
storing methane to be used as fuel for cooking. Obtain a yield in the form of cooking gas, cow
dung,pee and possibly dairy products.
Apply self regulation and accept feedback by learning from mistakes and limiting the quantity of your
yields by needs instead of wants. Use and value renewable resources and services by using an animal
based source. Produce no waste by reusing animal waste for a useful purpose. Design from pattern to
detail by starting with a goal of using bio gas and working out details like type and size of drum,
piping etc as they are needed. Integrate rather than segregate by combing functions. Bio gas

A semiotic study of vampires and vampire lore.
The field of semiotics exists because of the realization that society has a desire to create and produce
signs because it serves as an important aspect and purpose to life. We are capable of performing
semiosis and representation to demonstrate the knowledge in which we come to understand the world,
and conversely, it is through the same process that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The modern day vampire stories are mostly all converted to love stories, and it is love in the end that
makes the wheels turn. John S. Bak, in his essay Post/modern Dracula: from Victorian themes to
postmodern praxis says. Coppola inverts Stoker s horror story and turns it into a love story, in order to
establish the central theme that universal love, not hate is what will ultimately save humanity from
evil.
Another interesting angle to using the vampire narrative as a tool in Christian hegemony is that holy
ground is never the deterrent to the vampire. It is always holy Christian ground. Religious artefacts
don t prove fatal to the vampire, Christian religious artefacts do. The idea that all religions are equal,
and other religions may also play a deterrent role never comes up. This, despite the fact that modern
day vampire narratives are exploring the realms of vampire history, and have traced vampiric lineage
all the way to Egypt during the time of the Pharaohs. However, the Christian undercurrents remain.
The image of a vampire unable to enter a mosque, or a temple or a synagogue are yet to be seen, even
though the concepts of vampires have existed for millennia with demonic entities considered the
precursor to the modern vampire seen in ancient cultures ranging from Mesopotamians, Romans,
Ancient Greeks and Hebrews.
However, as time progressed, vampires and the connotations

Early Modern Europe – Major Forces for Change
Early Modern Europe Major Forces for Change
There are a lot of events that shaped the history of early Europe. Our ancestors had a lot on their plate
when they discovered new lands and fought new diseases. One of the early forces that had a major
impact were the crusades. The Crusades were a bunch of religious wars that were called on by the
Pope and the Catholic Church in order to defend Christianity against the Muslims and get closer to the
holy cities and other places in ancient Palestine. So what exactly does crusade mean? The word comes
from an old French word crois , which means cross (if you haven t guessed it). The crusaders (men
who take vows to fight for Christianity) were not usually under a single banner, they all ... Show more

Other examples would be the fighter s guild, or the elusive thief s guild.
Another event that caused a massive change in Europe was The Black Death , a very deadly epidemic
that claimed a massive number of victims. The plague was believed to be brought by rats from the
eastern trade routes. There were 3 ways to get infected. First one was bubonic which gets its name
from the massive swellings that the victim had on their head and arms. The swellings were usually the
size of a small apple. This type was mainly spread the same way as malaria, via insects. Fleas would
usually attach themselves to rats or other infected animals and then come in contact with humans, and
infected immediately, the life expectancy was no more than one week. The second type was the
pneumonic plague, as the word suggests it usually attacked the lungs first, because it was spread just
by breathing the same air as another victim, in turn it was much more dangerous and life expectancy
was no more than 2 days. The third type of the plague was the septicemic which translates to a disease
which attacks the bloodstream. Suffice to say that no doctor at that time could cure it, either because
they were too afraid to even go near the victims or perhaps they were just ignorant. The reaction to the
plague was mixed. One of the scenarios that happened is best described in the story The Masque of the
Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe. A group of nobles shut themselves in a

Metallica s And Justice For All
There are a number of reasons why I enjoy these musical acts. Although they often vary significantly
in vocals, speed, and production, all of these musical acts best works are all lyrically interesting. For
example, Metallica s ...And Justice for All is a concept album which explores injustice in war, politics,
and law. All of Rage Against the Machine s albums are politically charged, discussing topics like
police brutality, patriarchy, and apartheid. Every one of these musical acts presents intriguing and
powerful lyrics which make me want to listen closely. Generally, much of these acts lyrics center
around feelings of anger, despair, alienation, and detachment. They often vary quite significantly in
terms of theme, but their poignancy is

The Slavery of the Millennium
It is common ideology that slavery is a thing of the past. This is far from true; sex trafficking is
prominent all across the world on a massive scale and is the new form of slavery. According to the
U.S. Department of State estimates that 560,000 women are trafficked each year across international
borders and forced into the sex industry. {{34 Holman,M. 2008; }} Other non government programs
such a UNICEF have these numbers in the millions. {{34 Holman,M. 2008; }} The real numbers of
sex trafficking are unknown, but the problem is evident. The general public is unaware of the sex

2005; }} The problem of sex trafficking must be amended at the ground roots to see improvement.
Changes must be implemented to the standing sex trafficking legislation, starting with the Victims of
Trafficking and Violence Protection Act implemented in 2000 to prevent trafficking, protect victims,
and prosecute traffickers. Though this policy was a major milestone in human rights legislation, its
execution over time has been a travesty.{{30 Potocky,M. 2010; }} It is argued that laws are hard to
implement, when cultures readily accept prostitution and therefore adversely support sex trafficking.
This is can be seen in Thailand. The religion of the Thai justifies the selling of young women.
Buddhists believe that women are inferior to men and cannot attain enlightenment (43). They also
believe that people are meant to go through pain and suffering in life to make up for the sins they have
committed in past lives. It is also a belief of the Thai people that children owe a great deal to their
parents (44). Just being born is considered a great gift that takes a lifetime of repayment. Because of
these beliefs young girls are sold into sex slavery. Immediately, a new young prostitute has a great
amount of debt, and in addition she is required to pay for rent, food and drink, medicinal fees and
fines for not working hard enough or displeasing a costumer (58). This debt bondage keeps the girls

Piaget s Theory Of The Stages Of Development Essay
Conservation is the ability to understand that as an object changes form, it does not change the overall
amount or mass. In Piaget s theory, he describes that during the pre operational stage of development
children are often incapable of understanding the concept of conservation, the ages in this stage
generally range from 2 6 years old (Siegler Alibali, 2005). It isn t until the concrete operational stage
that children have the ability to understand conservation. During this stage children range from the
ages of 7 12 years old. In order to observe the changes in between stages, I chose to administer Piaget
s conservation of solid quantity to two different children. The task administered was to see if the two
children would be able to see a transformation when I rolled out one of the two balls of clay. Piaget
illustrated a stage model that explains the different stages of development starting at birth and
continuing to twelve years old and onwards. In the task that I will be conducting it involves two of the
four stages. The first stage is the pre operational period. During this time children are exhibiting
egocentrism as well as using symbolic representations, such as symbols or using signs. When children
are in the pre operational stage they do not have the ability to see transformations, instead they focus
on fixed states. It is not until the concrete operational stage that children are able to see these
transformations between states. The inability to see

Examples Of Fallacy
Pseudo reasoning A fallacy is a misleading or unsound argument based on a false or invalid reasoning
and is used as a premise to support a conclusion. Fallacies can be persuasive and be made both
accidentally and deliberately to delude others from the truth. Fallacies can be difficult to avoid if one
does not have the mind of a critical thinker. When utilizing the mechanisms of critical thinking one is
able to see through the misrepresentations of fallacies and to draw a valid, logical conclusion. This
essay aims to discuss how and why formal fallacies and substantive fallacies are used. Since a great
variety of formal and substantial fallacies exist, this essay will limit to show examples of the formal
fallacy affirming the consequent and the substantial inversion of cause and effect. A formal fallacy ...

Affirming the consequent can be derived in the form of if P then Q where P is the antecedent and the
consequent of the conditional is Q. To illustrate this, a quote from Donald Trump, candidate for
President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election, on the recent terror attack in Paris is
presented: When you look at Paris, you know, the toughest gun laws in the World, Paris, nobody had
guns but the bad guys, nobody had guns. They were just shooting them one by one... And I ll tell you
what, you can say what you want, but if they had guns, if they were allowed to carry guns, it would
have been a much much different situation By reconstructing this example as an argument with
premises and conclusion it would look like this: P1) If the victims were allowed to carry guns (P), then
the situation would have been much different (Q). P2) The victims might have survived (Q). C)
Therefore France should allow their citizens to carry guns

Examples Of Altruism In The Movie The Hobbit

Does Altruism Exist?
In many movies and shows there are an abundant acts of selfless altruism. Altruism is a selfless act
that someone does without asking for anything in return. An example of altruism in a movie is The
Hobbit . In this movie, the hero helps someone in need without expecting anything in return. In a
movie like the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who is the main character, journeys with the dwarf king to help
his kingdom in need. Knowing he could be brutally killed in a face of a battle or by the dragon. His act
of selfless altruism even saves someone life. Altruism exist and movie like this is simply reflect the
alterium we practice in real world.
The philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, believes that people do good things because it makes them feel
good not because they are trying to do a good deed for something in return. Hobbes might say that
Bilbo Baggins only helps others because he would have felt bad if he did not. Therefore, Hobbes
would say that altruism does not exist in this movie. Another philosopher, Joseph Butler, disagree with
Hobbes. He believes that humans do good deeds because they have an inner sense of benevolence. He
might suggest that Bilbo Baggins s does have altruism. My view is that is that Bilbo Baggins show a
behavior of altruism not because he just simply felt good after doing it. He did it because it is a good
thing to do.
According to Samir Okasha, a biologist from Stanford, altruism comes from our human biology.
Altruism also exists all around us and in many species. Individuals can gain so much from the act of
altruism. Okaska suggest that people do carry a gene to be altruism it exist within us all. Within
human beings we have a biological need to survive. The reason altruism exist is so we all can have a
chance of survival. Selfishness exist in order to increase the chance of an individual to survive.
According to Scott, Selfishness does not do well at the between group level, because it harms the
group s chances of survival. This is why we have organized groups who tend have the authority to
punishment mechanisms like prisons or exile to prevent freeloading or other selfish behavior (Suttie).
My view is that people

Work Experience 4
Lastly, I was involved with drafting and editing of engineering drawings. This is needed and essential
in almost all engineering sector to communicates ideas and all needed information from the engineer
to the manufacturer. Another important item would be the Engineering orders (EO), which are used for
changes in components, assemblies, or documents such as processes and work instructions.
I started out with doing EO. As mentioned before, while assembling and inspecting, some mistakes
could be found and were corrected. As such, I had to do an EO for a few components. Being new, I
had the help from the staffs here, especially on the required standards on the EO. Through this, I learnt
of the importance of tolerance, projection view and the decimal places. The same applied for

fledgling specialty coffee market? What were the most important factors in shaping his perspective
and its success? 2. By 1987, Schultz bought Starbucks from its original founders. It has grown from

The ambiances at each bar were different and the energy was electrifying. It was in this setting that he
realized that creating an atmosphere and bonding with customers around a cup of coffee was
monumental in improving his business. Coffee would be only the automobile for a place where people
want to stay for a while, a place like home, and office. These variables will become the differentiating
factor for Starbucks. Howard Schultz viewed the possibilities for the specialty coffee market as one
that will not be based on advertising and promotion, but rather one that is based on personal
experiences, their reaction to coffee, both the people who make and serve it , and the stores
atmosphere as well as a sense of community. The larger known coffee businesses were beginning to
show signs of stagnation in the 1970 s and 1980 s. Unlike Proctor Gamble other large manufacturers,
specialty coffee producers were small independent distributors. According to the Harvard Business

two cups of coffee per day, with almost one of every two men , women and children over the age of 10

shrinking market. The smaller independent specialty coffee producers were selling only high quality

Losing My Best Friend To A Monster
Losing my Best Friend to a Monster Gracie and I had been best friends since the first grade. We were
in third grade when she started missing a lot of school. I had been wondering for a couple weeks why
she hadn t been in school. I had no idea what could have been wrong with her. Even on the days she
would come to school she would end up going home sick because she wasn t feeling well. It was
almost the end of our third grade year and I couldn t stop wondering what was going on with her.
There were three days until school was over when my other best friend Rachael called me. She was
crying. I asked her what was wrong. She struggles to speak stuttering she said, My mom and I were
just at the ice cream shop and Gracie was there with her mom. I was wondering why she was crying
trying to figure out what was going on. I asked What s wrong? What is it? Is there something wrong
with Gracie? That s when I heard the bitter words. Gracie has kidney cancer. I dropped the phone and
began to cry. I was scared to death. Over that summer I rarely got to hang out with her. She always
had doctors appointments or she had nurses coming to her house and she wasn t allowed to have
friends over. When school started up I barely got to talk to her she was going through Chemotherapy
treatments and wasn t allowed to be near people. She didn t come back to school until fifth grade and
by then our friendship had almost completely faded away. After a few months of school Gracie and I

Area and Oasis Blocks
Internal Assesment Task 2C
In this experiment I am investigating the relationship between surface area and the volume of a model
cactus and to determine whether this relationship affects the loss of water.
We used oasis blocks, an absorbant material used by florists as a substitute for a cactus, that would
soak up the water, and thus ideally show the percentage water loss by weighing the before and after
evaporation weights.
Independent Variable
The independent variable is the total surface area for each size of the blocks and I think this will affect
the dependent variable as larger blocks, I hypothesize, will have less water loss by evaporation as
there is less surface area for it, as opposed to the smaller (2cm x 2cm x 2cm) ... Show more content on

each experiment, however I believe that it is shown in my graph that the relationship between the
dependent and independent variable is obvious.

The Common Problem Of Addiction
Some people truly do not understand how serious an addiction really can be; they even used the word
lightly. They say thing like I m addicted to shoes, or I m addicted to eating chocolate. They can really
like shoes or really like to eat chocolate but can they truly say that they are addicted to these things.
The common definition for the word addition is to have a compulsive need to have something on a
regular bases, that can means every day. Addiction is looked at as being a chronic disease of the brain.
Just like any other disease addiction can take over your life. The most common addiction that hurts
our society more then we know is drug or alcohol addictions. Not only is it taking over our community
s but it is also taking over our jails and prisons. There are over 6.8 million people in America that are
suffering with a drug or alcohol addiction, and many of these people are suffering alone. Since they
have these addictions many times they are arrest for using drugs or committing a crime so that they
can get the drugs they need. There are over two million people serving time in our jails and prisons
and over 500,000 are there because of a drug related crime. Drug and alcohol addiction has become an
increasing problem over the years. We need to look more in to making sure that these individuals get
the right help instead of just locking them up and throwing away the key. By doing this we could
decrease their chances of them reusing and re offending and returning to jail

Analysis Of Jim Mccormick s Short Story Breaking Through...
The two stories Breaking through Uncertainty and Neighbours are both stories about how big the
benefits are when risks have been taken. The first short story is about how a skydiver must overcome
his own uncertainty, to save himself from certain death. While the other story is still dramatic, just in a
different tone; it s about a young woman, who must decide whether or not a friendship is worth
standing up for something that s right. The protagonists in both stories, have to take risks, and they re
both rewarded for taking those risks; one with his life, and the other with a stronger friendship. Even
though the skydiver is risking his life, the protagonist in Neighbours had more gut to do what she had
to do, where is the skydiver just let second nature take over. Above all, the protagonists both did
experience serious risk taking moments, and they both benefited for the greater good.

Inclusive Education in South Africa
The Zulu tribe of South Africa is the largest ethnic group in the country and its language is the most
frequently used of all in South Africa. (Hamlett) The tribe was first discovered when Portugal settled
the land, and since then the tribe and its relationships with the colonists is anything but peaceful, and
to this day there still is tension. Maybe because of this, the education system throughout the 1900 s
refused to allow for the teaching of African culture other than stereotypes and other inaccurate
information that the colonists approved. The Zulu tribe s lack of education and the use of non native
languages in school paired with its relationship toward further discrimination later in life is an
indication that not teaching indigenous culture leads to real world discrimination. South Africa was
segregated until 1994 and therefore is not the epitome of racial tolerance, but it is the treatment of
education of their indigenous tribe the Zulu that shows that education controlled by one culture will
lead to further segregation and worse conditions for the races out of the loop. Now, the last four
presidents of South Africa were black and the current one is Zulu but even with influence in the
highest office the tribe is unable to find work or make a life that is comparable to their white
counterparts. The discrimination of education has led to longer consequences than the segregation and
disenfranchisement because now there are generations of natives unable to compete

Alex meets Jonah briefly in New York the following day. Alex discusses the problems he is

their basis for conducting research is to examine how individuals and their behaviors influence the
environment. As evident by the available literature, each theorist uses modern organizational studies in
order to understand, control, predict, and explain some phenomenon based on a particular need. In the
1900s, theories were formulated around production and economic goals. In the 1960 and 70s, theories
were heavily influenced by social psychology and quantitative research and in the 1980s, literature
then expanded to providing cultural explanations of organizations with influences from psychology,
sociology and anthropology, shifting from quantitative to qualitative research as an acceptable method
for conducting research.
The vast literature on organizational theory demonstrates that while there is no single way to structure
an organization, there are some commonly accepted general principles that can be identified. For this
particular literature review, my topic will focus primarily on the variation of productivity and its
influence in organizational theory as it relates to participant involvement, motivation and decision
making.
Classical Model:
Organizational theory starts general and moves to specifics. Beginning with the classical model, which

Sense And Sensibility Book Review Essay
Book Report Sense and Sensibility 1.) In Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility, the title is a metaphor for
the two main characters Elinor and Marianne. Elinor represents sense and Marianne represents
sensibility. We find out early that Elinor does not share her feelings. When Edward comes into the
story, there was an immediate attraction. She tells no one of her feelings. It was just assumed that they
are meant for each other. When Edward has to leave, Elinor says nothing.
Edward does promise he will come down and give Margaret an atlas. When the atlas comes and not
Edward, the one who ends up crying was Margaret and not Elinor. We do learn, however, that Elinor
can get emotional too. When Marianne was playing the piano at their new ... Show more content on

He was always silently wishing in his heart that Marianne someday will notice him. I think he is
sophisticated and does not deserve a brat like Marianne. Even now, I still do not understand why a rich
and sophisticated like him would want an immature and na ve lady like Marianne? I guess maybe the
opposite attracts!! 3.) My favorite scene of the story is in the ending.
The story ends happily with Elinor marrying Edward, and Marianne marrying the Colonel. There is a
gentle irony in the outcome of Marianne s life. quot;Marianne was born to extraordinary fate. She was
born to overcome an affection formed so late in life as at seventeen, and with no sentiment superior to
strong esteem and lively friendship, voluntarily to give her hand to another and that other, a man who
had suffered no less than herself under the event of a former attachment, whom, two years ago, she
had consider too old to be married, and who still sought the constitutional safeguard of a flannel
waistcoat! quot;(pg. 304) I feel most happy for Colonel Brandon because, quot;he was now as happy
as hose who best loved him believed he deserved to be; in Marianne he was consoled for every past
affliction. Marianne could never loves by halves; and her whole heart became, in time, as much
devoted to her husband as it had once been to Willoughby. quot;(pg.

Africa By Kofi Awoonor Analysis
Modern World Literature: Africa Ghana s history is a metaphor for what occurred in the immediate
aftermath of independence in Africa, is a quote by Kofi Awoonor, Ghana s leading literary figure and
one of Africa s most acclaimed authors. Three of his poems illustrate the hardships and trials that the
Africans faced after their claim of independence from Britain. As said by Awoonor himself, ...high
hopes were crushed by the greed, corruption, and lust for power... . The author uses multiple literary
devices as a way to emphasize the adversities they faced. Kofi Awoonor symbolizes the downfall of
Ghana after independence through the use of theme, mood, and symbolism in his Three Poems. The
first literary device Awoonor uses is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next literary device is mood. Song of War holds a very intense and demanding voice to the text. It
is full of declaratives and it uses strong diction about war and their military. In the text, they refer to
those who do not want to serve as cowards and claim that they shall lose their calabashes when we
come... . Another example is, When we start, the ground shall shake... which is meant to stress their
amount of soldiers and bring fear to their opponents. The Sea Eats the Land at Home contains the
mood of pity and despair. The poem greatly highlights the devastation of the people from the loss of
their land and property. It can be detected in the poem how the mothers are mostly the one in
desolation for the fear of her kids. An example that backs up said statement is, With her two children
shivering from the cold, her hands on her breast, weeping mournfully. The mood contributes to the
distress of the Africans from not only loss of land, but loss of hope. At the Gates holds the mood of
faith and reliance. The narrator does not know where he is, but he remains dependent of God and
knows that he will be alright as long as he knows he is doing it for Him. He states in the poem, I will
drink this calabash for it is god s gift to me... . Another example is ...give me an offering that I will
give to God and he will be happy. The mood helps readers view the emotion and purpose distributed
throughout the story, and symbolism is another

Investigating The Biochemical Systems Evolved
By looking at the basic biochemistry most organisms share, we can start putting together how the
biochemical systems evolved. However, up until the eighties, scientists were still baffled by a chicken
and egg debate. All modern organisms require nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) to build proteins (Leslie
99), and the proteins are needed in the formation of nucleic acids. The mystery of which came first:
RNA or DNA was solved when a new property of RNA was discovered. There are some RNAs that
are capable of catalyzing chemical reactions. This means that RNA is capable of storing genetic
information, as well as cause chemical reactions vital for self replication. This breakthrough
tentatively solved the mystery of which came first: RNA or DNA. ... Show more content on

Analyzing ATP together with other molecular fossils, scientists have discovered that catalytic RNA
and molecular fossils are closely related to nucleic acids; suggesting that RNA was crucial to earth s
first life. This observations support the RNA world hypothesis, that earth s first life used RNA for
basic cellular process rather than the mix of proteins, DNA and RNA used by current organisms
(Lazcano et al. 283).
Genetics with inheritable evolutionary selection could have come into place with RNA servicing as a
self replicator, hence uniting the properties a replicator capable of inheriting information at the same
time having the ability to evolve (Leslie 100). Explaining how RNA molecules came about on the
basis of prebiotic chemistry is challenging but possible (Choudhary 655). Therefore, experiments have
illustrated that RNA can form self replicating molecules, and RNA has been applied successfully in
directed evolution experiments (Biebricher et al., 630). In addition, there are numerous potential traces
of RNA world present in modern cells. Several viruses use RNA as their genetic material; this proves
that RNA is capable of carrying genetic information. RNA can also reversely transcribed into DNA,
and the biological synthesis process leading to deoxynucleotides is founded on desoxylation of
ribonucleotides, showing that RNA preceded DNA. Additionally, RNA is a functional and structural

Character Sketch Of The Character Of Miss Maudie
Take a moment to think about the quintessential Favorite Aunt. What makes her the favorite? Does she
have a loud mouth and a strong will? Does she watch out for you no matter what? In To Kill a
Mockingbird, Harper Lee works hard to paint Miss Maudie Atkinson (Miss Maudie) in a perfectly
flawed manner. From the beginning when her house burns down, through the Tom Robinson trial, and
all the way to the end, Beautifully stubborn and fearlessly caring are two of the character traits that
define Miss Maudie Atkinson (Miss Maudie) throughout the novel. Miss Maudie bases her way of life
on her beliefs, and in her beliefs she does not waver. One of the very first things we learn about her is
that she loves to garden. We also quickly learn that she is a Christian. However, when the Baptists
come by her house and tell her she s going to hell for gardening, she does not stop. Gardening is
something she loves, and she believes doing what you love makes God happy. She doesn t care if the
Baptists think she s damned, she is going to do what she thinks is right. The unwavering persistence in
her beliefs established early in the novel sets the stage for further acts of nonconformity, such as her
opposition to watching the trial of Tom Robinson. When asked is she is going to the trial, she simply
states, I am not. t s morbid, watching a poor devil on trial for his life. Look at all those folks, it s like a

Stiff Neck Research Paper
According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, Americans said that neck pain was on their
top four list of common pains. All of us have experience a stiff neck at some point in our lives.
http://www.painmed.org/patientcenter/facts_on_pain.aspx#common What is a Stiff Neck?
It s when you experience pain or stiffness in the neck that makes it difficult to move your neck from
side to side. It s a pain that can usually be treated at home and will pass in a day or two with the right
treatment.
Common Causes of a Stiff Neck
Stress
One of the most common causes of a stiff neck is stress. Stress can cause muscles in the body to
tighten, which can eventually lead to stiffness and pain. People normally experience a stiff neck as
well as a headache ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While sitting up straight in a chair, press your shoulder blades together then relax. This should be done
up to ten times. Roll your shoulders in circles to the back then reverse at least ten times. With slow
movements, press your ear towards your shoulder on each side. Do as many repetitions as you need to
start feeling the muscle releasing.
Heat Therapy
Blood circulation to the neck can decrease the pain and muscle spasm associated with a stiff neck. You
can use a heating pad or a warm cloth on your neck for approximately twenty minutes to relieve the
pain and stiffness. The heat loosens the neck muscles.
Massage the Muscle
A good massage of the area can also reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the muscles. A
soothing oil for the massage will also have the added benefit of helping you to relax and feel less
stressed.
Exercises for a Stiff Neck
Like every other muscle in the body, the neck muscle needs to be exercised to function properly.
Slowly roll your head in a circle clockwise ten to fifteen times before switching directions and circling
counter clockwise. This will help exercise the neck. Let your chin drop to your chest slowly then
reverse direction to look at the ceiling. Be careful with this exercise since it can make you slightly
dizzy if you do it too quickly.

When I was a little girl At Shubenacadie school. You snatched it away: I speak like you I think like
you I create like you The scrambled ballad, about my world. Two ways I talk Both ways I say, Your
way is more powerful. So gently I offer my hand and ask, Let me find my talk So I can teach you
about me. 5. The following is a quotation, from Brian Maracle s book Crazywater in which the subject
is explaining why native alcoholism is connected to the residential schools: Figure it this way, over
sixty thousand natives were processed through those schools since they started and you got generation
on generation just piled on top and now we re trying to figure out, What is love? How in the hell are
you supposed to know how to f in love when you re not given love for ten months out of every year?
It s obvious they don t know how to love. They ran away because they knew there was something
missing. They didn t have it. Same thing with me... The question is not, Why do we drink? Ask first
the question, Do you know how to love? And you ll find a very thin line between them because they
come from each other. You booze because you can t love and you booze under the guise of pretending
that you can. Why do you think that the experience in a

Destiny Summary Essay
Destiny and what it offers:
With Destiny reaching its 1 year anniversary soon, the game went through many changes that have
improved since launch, but is it worth buying before The Taken King expansion is released? I took a
very long break from Destiny due to it lacking in what most games have for $60, which is content.
Destiny had released an Alpha Beta prior to its original launch giving players an idea of what the
game is and how it would be played. The biggest innovation that Bungie wanted to utilize in Destiny
was the social aspect, having players communicate and meeting to do Raids, Strikes and other
activities for players to enjoy and accomplish. As so many of you know that have played Destiny,
know that these things that were promised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pricing and what specific content will be available doesn t give people any comfortability due to the
fact that you won t know what you re getting unless you either do a lot of research or you just buy it
and Destiny is no exception to this. Destiny offers two expansions called The Dark Below I and House
of Wolves II, they both contain content that give Destiny players their grinding fix, but are both
expansions actually worth getting? Yes and it s not for a good reason either. Destiny is a $60 (at the
time, now $30) retail game that should offer content that will make players feel as if the $60 was
worth spending in the long run and ultimately Destiny was not worth that amount of money during the
original release. It lacked content and didn t give players what was offered. The story or lack of story
can only be understood if you go to your Bungie.net account and read the Grimmoire. It is a great read
as it provides a better background for the lore of Destiny and the characters, along with enemies, as it
explains the major plot holes in the game. It s a wasted resource, but it is perfect for those that would

Occupational Therapy Case Paper
I spoke with Mr. Naranjo many times since the last reporting period regarding scheduling of
occupational therapy and also the MRI. Once the MRI and x ray were done he declined going back to
Dr. Branch for a follow up appointment on 1/31/8. He has requested to see his primary care doctor s
office.
On 2/6/18 I met Mr. Naranjo at the office of his PA Pamela Becker. There was extended travel due to
icy roads. I arrived though at 9 am and Mr. Naranjo was already at the location. He reports that his
pain is currently at a 4.5 at best and an 8 at the wrist. He said that Occupational therapy has helped. He
again points to his forearm and reports he has a popping in the firearm, he also points to his wrist.
Before he said that the forearm pain radiated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also says and demonstrates that if he supports the wrist that the tip of the ulna goes back in place
and if he holds it the pain goes away. He reports that he has a laxity in the wrist. The PA Ms. Becker
went over the MRI, x ray and the ultrasound. She said he was born with the ulna being longer, that it is
not acute. The MRI did show some fluid which could be from inflammation. She said she would
recommend he go to a hand specialist. Mr. Naranjo was not aware of the results of the MRI other than
they were normal because he opted not to follow up with Dr. Branch. He said he did not like Dr.
Branch, that he did not feel a connection. Ms. Becker would also recommend a MRI of the wrist done
at Sparrow so the previous radiologist could compare it to the prior forearm MRI, She suggested Dr.
Stevens a hand specialist, and she also ordered Occupational therapy to continue. Mr. Naranjo asked if
she would order some pain medication since he has

  • 2. Social And Economic Development Of Rio De Janeiro 3) The Dashed Hopes of UPP Social (and its counterparts) The overall aim of the UPP is to integrate the favelas to the larger city (World Bank 2012). Once the community was pacified, the government could enter and provide goods and services. Therefore, since its origin, the program UPP Social was subordinated to the UPPs, meaning that only pacified favelas would receive it (Bentsi Enchill, Goodenough and Berger 2015). In partnership with UN Habitat, UPP Social was meant to accomplish the following aims: contribute to the consolidation of the peace process and the promotion of local citizenship in pacified territories; promote urban, social and economic development; carry out the full integration of these areas into the city (Rio Mais ... This explains why they overwhelmingly support Lula and Dilma Rousseff in the current political and economic crisis, unlike the rest of the population (Caulyt and Malkes 2016; Favela 247 2016). However, due to the rising living costs in the pacified favelas (Oosterban and Van Hijk 2015), the Bolsa Família does not provide a support that would be sufficient to overcome clientelism. Moreover, the Bolsa Família is often blamed for not giving voice to civil society (Hevia 2011), therefore participatory policies are generally preferred. Residents Awareness and Participation in the Elaboration of Projects Residents are overall unaware of the activities undertaken by UPP Social. They associate it with social events organized by the UPPs. As a consequence, many residents did not want to take part in the activities, as they associated UPP Social with the police. To overcome the misunderstandings, the program was renamed Rio + Social in 2014 (Fernandes 2014). However, the change in name did not improve the services offered, and residents views are not taken into account when mapping needs of the community. Evidence from interviews showed that few residents could describe was doing for their community. Indeed, it appears that the program is limited to the organization of social events. For example, Mirian, Human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. John Swales Discourse Community Examples A discourse community is defined as groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals. John Swales is a professor in linguistics and received his Ph. D. from Cambridge University. John Swales s Six Criteria is a perfect setup for a discourse community, and some of the steps are setting a common goal, mechanisms of intercommunication; provide information and feedback, genres, lexis, and threshold level of members. James Lee is a professor who taught linguistics at Stanford and Northwestern University. I asked Hilgenbrink, What types of feedback and information do you have to give to the community or police headquarters? He said First off we have to write citations to enforce the law and then we have to talk to our supervisor about any laws that could be removed. Citations involve a lot of paperwork and this is one my least favorite things to do. They have to give parking, speeding, and all other type of fines to bring revenue into the city and to enforce the law. These citations consist of two pages of content pertaining to the law that an individual has broken. If the community has a problem with a law they can discuss it with the city council or it can be discussed at town hall meetings. Genres are types of texts that are recognizable to the reader and writers, and meet the needs of the rhetorical situation in which they function. (Swales 467) I asked Hilgenbrink, What texts or books do police officers use every day? He said I think the text or book that we use every day is the laws that we enforce. This is pretty simple because the laws are stated in the state s constitution which the police officers inforce. Genre is crucial to the development of a discourse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Based on the following input sequence: x = (x1; : : : ; xT), a standard RNN is responsible for computing the vector sequence: h = (h1; : : : ; hT) as well as the output vector sequence: y = (y1; : : : ; yT) using two equations (depicted below) from t = 1 to T [3]. J. Sentimental Analysis Sentimental analysis tries to figure out how the presenter feels about the subject material being presented. This analysis helps the NLP formulate a more accurate and appropriate response. Many sentimental analyses work by looking at each sentiments of the sentence by giving positive or negative points to each word. Points are then summed up for each sentence and based on that score it is deemed either positive, negative, or neutral. But sentiments are often very subtle and cannot be detected using simple point analysis [1]. To better grasp sentiments in NSL computer scientist once again turned to the deep learning process and developed a tree structured long short term memory analysis (LSTM). LSTM combines deep learning with the points system. After the deep learning process has assigned meaning to a word it is given a weight based upon positive or negative feel. It is then placed ... • 7. Personal Reflection Of Personal Goals In The Honey Whiskey... When I began pursuing my MFA in writing, I knew what I wanted my thesis to be, I just needed some guidance in order to get there. I had completed my first novel, Seeking Signs, which weaves a narrative around an Iowa crime in 1913 and won the Midwest Book Award for historical fiction from the Midwest Independent Publishers Association in 2013. The research and writing that went into it caused me to fall in love with the process and look for another challenge, one even more complex than the first. Through my MFA pursuits, I wanted to hone my research skills, improve my ability to establish vivid historical imagery, and gain a solid foothold on the voice necessary to tell my next tale. My goals for the second novel, The Honey Whiskey Murders, began with exploring untapped research avenues. While I had a plot in mind, I knew it was important to stay open to the unexpected places the information took me. The research that went into the project was so entertaining, it was sometimes difficult to force myself to sit down and write. I read Murder and Mayhem in Clinton County, Iowa, a book published by the Clinton County historical museum which includes a compilation of all newspaper articles covering both solved and unsolved murders from the area dating back to the mid 1800s. The case of Homer and Rosela Brownfield is one of many unsolved murders in my home county. The Brownfield murders made headlines as far away as Ohio; these reports sensationalized the crime with statements ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pros And Cons Of Being Outside The Field Of Dermatology SOCIETAL CONCERNS There could be a lot of social issues when it comes to dermatology because it deals with a person s skin and that is what everyone sees. In today s society, the way a person looks means everything. That s good for a dermatologist because their job is to get rid of flaws in the skin, however, this will continue the trend of looks meaning everything to people instead of a person s personality or talents and gifts. This could cause people to have lower self esteem, problems in social settings, or even loss of motivation to do certain things. Based on the negative consequences of the trends and issues, I believe there are ways to prevent them from happening and improve some of the problems with the technology. With the issue of the internet and administrative tools, patients data should be kept private and should not get deleted or lost. In the future when I am in my career, to prevent these things from happening I will make sure when I am processing a patient s information I will take my time to make sure it is saved in the appropriate folders. I would also create a security system for the patients so their information could not get leaked on the internet for others to see. There are different forms of security software that can be installed on computers to prevent things like documentation of a patient s file getting leaked. Technology could be complicated, however, if you are a physician, you should have some type of understanding of how to use it. Since there are a lot of people who do not understand how to use certain technology, I would have educational sessions for those that need to learn how to use the technology for certain procedures. • 11. Anorexia Nervos A Psychological, Familial And... Anorexia nervosa results from a complex interplay between biological, psychological, familial and sociocultural factors. Alice s development of anorexia nervosa can be viewed through a psychoanalytic lens. Many of Alice s needs were not met or interpreted correctly in early childhood by her parents, particularly her mother causing Alice to develop ego deficiencies in identity and need for control. This thought is supported by Hilde Bruch (1974) who regarded anorectics as being in a struggle for control and their own identity the pursuit of thinness was seen as a critical part of such a struggle . This mentality is clearly evident in Alice in her avoidance of sexual exploration by self or other in conjunction with focus on and loathing of body parts associated with womanhood impossibly wide hips, obnoxious bosom and boxy curves. Alice s first restriction of food correlated with the onset of puberty and her father infidelity/parents separation, this loss of control over changes to body and changes to family system caused Alice ego to create defenses and manifests itself in a control of food and weight to return to a time previous to the offending event(s). • 12. Liberal, John Ikenberry And The American Liberal World Order In Liberal Leviathan John Ikenberry argues that the American led liberal hegemonic order has reached a major shift in its authority within the liberal order. In the last two chapters of the book, Ikenberry argues that the era of unipolar hegemony for the United States is ending, and that it will eventually have to re negotiate its balance of power with other emerging states. Critics believe that the American liberal world order is no longer serving its original purpose, and is becoming a more imperial order that is beginning to disintegrate. Ikenberry also highlights that there are many states that could rival the overall hegemony of the United States. Overall the last two chapters of the book argue that the United States needs to consider taking a new pathway so that the liberal order can accurately serve its role for the challenges ahead. Ikenberry argues that there are many dilemmas within the organization of the international world order. The liberal order is defined by its openness and its rule based order. Order is maintained in these institutions when states agree to follow the rules set by these institutions. The liberal order has sought to establish its rules in a non biased system that will not discriminate other states, so that the entire institution can agree on these regulations. However, this has raised many serious dilemmas . There seems to be concern of how the balance of power operates. Ikenberry argues that the international order has been put into place ... • 13. Myself Autobiography I may seem like an average teenager. And like any other, I have an annoying eight year old brother and a strict set of parents. I am a girl who writes in a blue spotted diary just three times a month, and totally immersed in reading science fiction books. Getting dressed for the day would be me wearing some sort of team shirt, most likely the New York Giants or the New York Yankees. I have a voracious appetite for science. When my birthday or Christmas rolls around, I beg my parents to get me some sort of robotic kit and coding to play around with. But even though I may seem like an average teen, one thing that separates me from others is that I have grit. Math has not always come easy for me. I was disappointed when I learned that I didn t make it into pre algebra, and all my other friends did. I landed in Accelerated Math. The lessons that were taught were things that I already learned at my free time at home, and I felt very bored. But with the help of my parents, I decided to push myself into Algebra, learning that I could get there in seventh grade. I remember bringing about a dozen algebra books from the library, just trying to understand the basics of algebra. I was elated to find out that I got bumped into Algebra that year, but I very quickly found myself struggling. Before, I would never touch the textbook to do any problems and I would always get an A+. But it was a cold slap in the face when I got into Algebra. I remember when I had my first few quizzes, I ... Don t Take My Word For Yourself You know I think that it just might be but... don t take my word for it read on and decide for yourself, I personally own two GameCube consoles a purple coloured one and the other is a platinum one and at some point I may go for the missing black one just to be a little cheeky... nah if I was to be cheeky I would already have one of the extremely rare pearl ones in my sights. A Little bit of History. We all know the GameCube did not last very long as the competing consoles had more support and many more developers churning out titles and managed to force Nintendo to pack the GameCube in and move on to try a newer concept but before that happened the guys and gals at Nintendo tried to drum up sales by signing exclusive rights to some franchises, as a result of that attempt to boost sales we saw the Resident Evil series rebooted and new titles added exclusively on the GameCube as a deal was signed with Capcom for exclusive GameCube releases and also Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes was a massive deal along with a few others but it was not enough to boost sales and in the end they just packed it in, of course the rival systems had some serious firepower of their own with the likes of Kill zone, Gran Turismo, (PlayStation) Halo, (Xbox) and of course Grand Theft Auto on both. The GameCube was also the smallest of the three systems which a lot of gamers did not like, I personally love the fact that the console is small but most of the community did not and at just 11cm in ... Essay about Phonics and Whole Language Phonics and Whole Language A great debate whether the phonetic approach or whole language approach should be used in the classroom has been occurring since the early nineteen thirties, and there has not been a definite decision on which approach should be used to teach in the classroom. To understand this debate, one must first understand the differences between whole language and phonics learning. The Definition of Phonics Many people are confused by the term phonics, because the term can literally have two meanings. As Miriam Balmuth explains, in the historically earlier sense, the phonics of written language are the letters and spelling patterns of that language s alphabet and the speech sounds they represent put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Look and Say dominated the school system as a result of a strategic marketing plan carried out by the publisher (Schafely, 1996). Time for a Change? The school systems have had educational backgrounds molded after whole language, and its time for a phonics approach. It is now more crucial than ever for a change in the system. It would be impossible to expect the educational system to completely change the way children are learning to read, but the system must make small, quick changes over a short period of time to encompass the use of the phonics approach. Not all children have the same learning capabilities, and that is one of the main arguments against phonics. Many people in opposition say that not all children can learn from the phonics approach. What people opposed to phonics do not understand is that phonics can be incorporated into the learning process along with whole language to ensure a balance and complete understanding of the English language (Unkown, 1994). With whole language as the basis to the learning process, I believe that the schools are giving out good grade cards to children who are good at guessing and memorizing words. With this in place, parents don t realize that their children are being taught to guess instead of learning to read properly. It seems as though the schools have placed more priority on self esteem and appraisal than on literacy. It has come to a point where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Spider Man Anthropology With the recent announcement of Tom Holland having been casted as the MCU s new Spider Man, many fans were left wondering how Marvel Studios would tell the story of an iconic superhero known to the world without sounding repetitive or tiresome. I want them to be able to do whatever they want around me. And if they do something I don t like, I ll tell them (pg. 393). This passage near the ending of the book is very important for Charlie. Sam tells Charlie that if he likes her, he should be open to her, and if he wants to date her, he should ask her. Also, this reveals a change in Charlie after Sam tells him this; if he is uncomfortable with something, he will tell them that instead of being shy about it. For example, when Patrick kisses Charlie, he is uncomfortable with it, but because Patrick is his friend, he lets him do it. After what Sam tells Charlie, next time he will most likely be more open to Patrick and tell him he is uncomfortable with what he is doing to him. All in all, this passage is important, because it expresses that Charlie is changing from a once awkward and shy person to a more open and direct person. Metaphors and Repetition in Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night In Dylan Thomas Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, the speaker is a son talking to his aging father and pleading with him to fight against death. The son knows that death is the inevitable end to every life, but feels one should not give up to death too easily. By using metaphor, imagery, and repetition, Thomas reinforces the son s message that aging men see their lives with sudden clarity and realize how they might have lived happier, more productive lives. The son also mentions good men who do not die peacefully. These men despair that their feeble deeds did not accomplish enough. Even though they were good men, they feel they could have done so much more if given the time. The son next tells his father how wild and grave men also struggled with death. Wild men spent their lives frivolously, wishing time on its way. They learn when it is too late that they hurried time too fast and now they cannot recapture what they so wantonly spent. Their lives were foolishly wasted. The son also mentions grave or serious men who review their lives with a swift lucidity when death is upon them. These solemn, sober men now realize life could have been more joyous had they been a little more blind. If life is taken a little less seriously, one could blaze like meteors and be gay. Repetition at the end of each stanza is effectively used to reinforce the message to fight back against death. • 19. Huntingtons Disease Essay Huntington s Disease Huntington s disease, also known as Huntington s chorea is a genetic disorder that usually shows up in someone in their thirties and forties, destroys the mind and body and leads to insanity and death within ten to twenty years. The disease works by degenerating the ganglia (a pair of nerve clusters deep in the brain that controls movement, thought, perception, and memory) and cortex by using energy incorrectly. The brain will starve the neurons (brain cells), and sometimes make them work harder than usual, causing extreme mental stress. The result is jerky, random, uncontrollable, rapid movement such as grimacing of the face, flailing of arms and legs, and other such movement. This is known as chorea. Huntington s ... Named in 1872 for George Huntington the New York Doctor who first wrote down it s devestating symtoms, Huntingtons disease up to now was a silent time bomb. 13,000 people, the largest known concentration of sufferers from Huntington s Disease, live in the Lake Maracaibo region of Venezuela. The origins of this gene pool has been traced back to the 1800 s to a woman named Maria Concepcion. It was from blood samples of these people that scientists became extraordinarily lucky and isolated the genetic marker that shows the presence of this disorder. Today, it is believed that Maria obtained the disease when she was birthed by a european sailor. Since it was first recorded by George Huntington, a Long Island doctor, Huntington s disease had remained fairly low key. No one heard about it until it infected Woodie Guthrie, A famous folk singer from the 1920 s who showed symptoms of the disease. In 1967, he died. This put Huntington s Disease on the map, but it still was not well known. But, before Woodie guthrie died, he had a son, Arlo Guthrie. The best way to shift to a renewable source is to use resources and services that originate from plants, animals and the environment. It is also important to use locally sourced material as often as possible. It makes more sense to build a stone house on a rocky mountainside than on a barren plain. It s about using what we have around us to the best ability rather than be a part of a consumerist society. 6. Produce No Waste An old idiom states one man s trash is another man s treasure. First one was bubonic which gets its name from the massive swellings that the victim had on their head and arms. The swellings were usually the size of a small apple. This type was mainly spread the same way as malaria, via insects. Fleas would usually attach themselves to rats or other infected animals and then come in contact with humans, and infected immediately, the life expectancy was no more than one week. The second type was the pneumonic plague, as the word suggests it usually attacked the lungs first, because it was spread just by breathing the same air as another victim, in turn it was much more dangerous and life expectancy was no more than 2 days. The third type of the plague was the septicemic which translates to a disease which attacks the bloodstream. Suffice to say that no doctor at that time could cure it, either because they were too afraid to even go near the victims or perhaps they were just ignorant. The reaction to the plague was mixed. In Piaget s theory, he describes that during the pre operational stage of development children are often incapable of understanding the concept of conservation, the ages in this stage generally range from 2 6 years old (Siegler Alibali, 2005). It isn t until the concrete operational stage that children have the ability to understand conservation. During this stage children range from the ages of 7 12 years old. In order to observe the changes in between stages, I chose to administer Piaget s conservation of solid quantity to two different children. The task administered was to see if the two children would be able to see a transformation when I rolled out one of the two balls of clay. Piaget illustrated a stage model that explains the different stages of development starting at birth and continuing to twelve years old and onwards. In the task that I will be conducting it involves two of the four stages. The first stage is the pre operational period. • 27. Examples Of Altruism In The Movie The Hobbit Ishwari Tamang Alec Julien Philosophy 12/12/17 Does Altruism Exist? In many movies and shows there are an abundant acts of selfless altruism. Altruism is a selfless act that someone does without asking for anything in return. An example of altruism in a movie is The Hobbit . In this movie, the hero helps someone in need without expecting anything in return. In a movie like the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who is the main character, journeys with the dwarf king to help his kingdom in need. Knowing he could be brutally killed in a face of a battle or by the dragon. His act of selfless altruism even saves someone life. Altruism exist and movie like this is simply reflect the alterium we practice in real world. The philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, believes that people do good things because it makes them feel good not because they are trying to do a good deed for something in return. Hobbes might say that Bilbo Baggins only helps others because he would have felt bad if he did not. Therefore, Hobbes would say that altruism does not exist in this movie. Another philosopher, Joseph Butler, disagree with Hobbes. He believes that humans do good deeds because they have an inner sense of benevolence. He might suggest that Bilbo Baggins s does have altruism. My view is that is that Bilbo Baggins show a behavior of altruism not because he just simply felt good after doing it. He did it because it is a good thing to do. According to Samir Okasha, a biologist from Stanford, altruism comes from our human biology. Altruism also exists all around us and in many species. Individuals can gain so much from the act of altruism. Okaska suggest that people do carry a gene to be altruism it exist within us all. Within human beings we have a biological need to survive. The reason altruism exist is so we all can have a chance of survival. Selfishness exist in order to increase the chance of an individual to survive. According to Scott, Selfishness does not do well at the between group level, because it harms the group s chances of survival. Addiction is looked at as being a chronic disease of the brain. Just like any other disease addiction can take over your life. The most common addiction that hurts our society more then we know is drug or alcohol addictions. Not only is it taking over our community s but it is also taking over our jails and prisons. There are over 6.8 million people in America that are suffering with a drug or alcohol addiction, and many of these people are suffering alone. Since they have these addictions many times they are arrest for using drugs or committing a crime so that they can get the drugs they need. There are over two million people serving time in our jails and prisons and over 500,000 are there because of a drug related crime. Drug and alcohol addiction has become an increasing problem over the years. We need to look more in to making sure that these individuals get the right help instead of just locking them up and throwing away the key. • 36. Analysis Of Jim Mccormick s Short Story Breaking Through... The two stories Breaking through Uncertainty and Neighbours are both stories about how big the benefits are when risks have been taken. The first short story is about how a skydiver must overcome his own uncertainty, to save himself from certain death. While the other story is still dramatic, just in a different tone; it s about a young woman, who must decide whether or not a friendship is worth standing up for something that s right. The protagonists in both stories, have to take risks, and they re both rewarded for taking those risks; one with his life, and the other with a stronger friendship. Even though the skydiver is risking his life, the protagonist in Neighbours had more gut to do what she had to do, where is the skydiver just let second nature take over. Above all, the protagonists both did experience serious risk taking moments, and they both benefited for the greater good. Breaking Through Uncertainty by Jim McCormick is about how a skydiver is plummeting to his death, and he has got to figure out how to save himself. All the while the skydiver must deal with his self doubt. In paragraph eight, we see actually how much danger the skydiver is in I looked up to assess my canopy and saw something I don t often see; the horizon clearly visible ABOVE the trailing edge of my canopy. The skydiver obviously now knows what the stakes are if he messes up, which make his self doubt start to kick in. He starts to worry he s not going to do it, the only thing ... • 37. Inclusive Education in South Africa The Zulu tribe of South Africa is the largest ethnic group in the country and its language is the most frequently used of all in South Africa. (Hamlett) The tribe was first discovered when Portugal settled the land, and since then the tribe and its relationships with the colonists is anything but peaceful, and to this day there still is tension. Maybe because of this, the education system throughout the 1900 s refused to allow for the teaching of African culture other than stereotypes and other inaccurate information that the colonists approved. The Zulu tribe s lack of education and the use of non native languages in school paired with its relationship toward further discrimination later in life is an indication that not teaching indigenous culture leads to real world discrimination. South Africa was segregated until 1994 and therefore is not the epitome of racial tolerance, but it is the treatment of education of their indigenous tribe the Zulu that shows that education controlled by one culture will lead to further segregation and worse conditions for the races out of the loop. Now, the last four presidents of South Africa were black and the current one is Zulu but even with influence in the highest office the tribe is unable to find work or make a life that is comparable to their white counterparts. The discrimination of education has led to longer consequences than the segregation and disenfranchisement because now there are generations of natives unable to compete ... Clearly he has problems in his plant as is evident in the surprise visit he got from the vice president of his division, Bill Peach. Peach came to expedite an order (No. 41427), which he wanted to be shipped that day. Alex is given three months to turn around his unprofitable plant or else face a shut down. The order is shipped at the end of the day, although there was a breakdown of a machine and the plant operated beneath efficiency. All workers were pulled from other jobs just to work on a single order. Some even had to carry machine parts by hand to the point of assembly. Alex is concerned that his plant does not ... Finally they are all convinced by Alex s explanation and decide to call Jonah for further help. Alex meets Jonah briefly in New York the following day. Alex discusses the problems he is experiencing at the plant with Jonah, about how long he has to turn the plant around. Jonah says he doesn t have the time to solve the problem but that with diligence, Alex and his team should be able to. He asks Alex to forget about the robots and came up with a better definition of efficiency than is presently used at the plant. Jonah told Alex that a plant in which everyone was working all the time was inefficient. Jonah also dispels Alex s idea of a balanced plant being a good one. He said the trimming of capacity to demand is not good for a plant as it reduces throughput and inventory piles up. Jonah gives Alex something to think about What happens when dependent events are in combination with statistical fluctuations? Through a Boy Scout camping trip with his son s group, Alex is able to figure out Jonah s puzzle. The boys walk along the trail in a file with them alternating between ... Within each of the theorists preferred model of theory, their basis for conducting research is to examine how individuals and their behaviors influence the environment. As evident by the available literature, each theorist uses modern organizational studies in order to understand, control, predict, and explain some phenomenon based on a particular need. In the 1900s, theories were formulated around production and economic goals. In the 1960 and 70s, theories were heavily influenced by social psychology and quantitative research and in the 1980s, literature then expanded to providing cultural explanations of organizations with influences from psychology, sociology and anthropology, shifting from quantitative to qualitative research as an acceptable method for conducting research. The vast literature on organizational theory demonstrates that while there is no single way to structure an organization, there are some commonly accepted general principles that can be identified. For this particular literature review, my topic will focus primarily on the variation of productivity and its influence in organizational theory as it relates to participant involvement, motivation and decision making. Elinor represents sense and Marianne represents sensibility. We find out early that Elinor does not share her feelings. When Edward comes into the story, there was an immediate attraction. She tells no one of her feelings. It was just assumed that they are meant for each other. When Edward has to leave, Elinor says nothing. Edward does promise he will come down and give Margaret an atlas. When the atlas comes and not Edward, the one who ends up crying was Margaret and not Elinor. My favorite scene of the story is in the ending. The story ends happily with Elinor marrying Edward, and Marianne marrying the Colonel. There is a gentle irony in the outcome of Marianne s life. quot;Marianne was born to extraordinary fate. She was born to overcome an affection formed so late in life as at seventeen, and with no sentiment superior to strong esteem and lively friendship, voluntarily to give her hand to another and that other, a man who had suffered no less than herself under the event of a former attachment, whom, two years ago, she had consider too old to be married, and who still sought the constitutional safeguard of a flannel waistcoat! quot;(pg. 304) I feel most happy for Colonel Brandon because, quot;he was now as happy as hose who best loved him believed he deserved to be; in Marianne he was consoled for every past affliction. Marianne could never loves by halves; and her whole heart became, in time, as much devoted to her husband as it had once been to Willoughby. quot;(pg. 305) As for Willoughby, he could not hear of her marriage ... Africa By Kofi Awoonor Analysis Modern World Literature: Africa Ghana s history is a metaphor for what occurred in the immediate aftermath of independence in Africa, is a quote by Kofi Awoonor, Ghana s leading literary figure and one of Africa s most acclaimed authors. Three of his poems illustrate the hardships and trials that the Africans faced after their claim of independence from Britain. As said by Awoonor himself, ...high hopes were crushed by the greed, corruption, and lust for power... . The author uses multiple literary devices as a way to emphasize the adversities they faced. Another example is, When we start, the ground shall shake... which is meant to stress their amount of soldiers and bring fear to their opponents. The Sea Eats the Land at Home contains the mood of pity and despair. The poem greatly highlights the devastation of the people from the loss of their land and property. It can be detected in the poem how the mothers are mostly the one in desolation for the fear of her kids. An example that backs up said statement is, With her two children shivering from the cold, her hands on her breast, weeping mournfully. The mood contributes to the distress of the Africans from not only loss of land, but loss of hope. At the Gates holds the mood of faith and reliance. • 43. Investigating The Biochemical Systems Evolved By looking at the basic biochemistry most organisms share, we can start putting together how the biochemical systems evolved. However, up until the eighties, scientists were still baffled by a chicken and egg debate. All modern organisms require nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) to build proteins (Leslie 99), and the proteins are needed in the formation of nucleic acids. The mystery of which came first: RNA or DNA was solved when a new property of RNA was discovered. There are some RNAs that are capable of catalyzing chemical reactions. This means that RNA is capable of storing genetic information, as well as cause chemical reactions vital for self replication. This breakthrough tentatively solved the mystery of which came first: RNA or DNA. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Analyzing ATP together with other molecular fossils, scientists have discovered that catalytic RNA and molecular fossils are closely related to nucleic acids; suggesting that RNA was crucial to earth s first life. This observations support the RNA world hypothesis, that earth s first life used RNA for basic cellular process rather than the mix of proteins, DNA and RNA used by current organisms (Lazcano et al. 283). Genetics with inheritable evolutionary selection could have come into place with RNA servicing as a self replicator, hence uniting the properties a replicator capable of inheriting information at the same time having the ability to evolve (Leslie 100). Explaining how RNA molecules came about on the basis of prebiotic chemistry is challenging but possible (Choudhary 655). Therefore, experiments have illustrated that RNA can form self replicating molecules, and RNA has been applied successfully in directed evolution experiments (Biebricher et al., 630). In addition, there are numerous potential traces of RNA world present in modern cells. Several viruses use RNA as their genetic material; this proves that RNA is capable of carrying genetic information. RNA can also reversely transcribed into DNA, and the biological synthesis process leading to deoxynucleotides is founded on desoxylation of ribonucleotides, showing that RNA preceded DNA. Does she watch out for you no matter what? In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee works hard to paint Miss Maudie Atkinson (Miss Maudie) in a perfectly flawed manner. From the beginning when her house burns down, through the Tom Robinson trial, and all the way to the end, Beautifully stubborn and fearlessly caring are two of the character traits that define Miss Maudie Atkinson (Miss Maudie) throughout the novel. Miss Maudie bases her way of life on her beliefs, and in her beliefs she does not waver. One of the very first things we learn about her is that she loves to garden. We also quickly learn that she is a Christian. However, when the Baptists come by her house and tell her she s going to hell for gardening, she does not stop. Gardening is something she loves, and she believes doing what you love makes God happy. She doesn t care if the Baptists think she s damned, she is going to do what she thinks is right. The unwavering persistence in her beliefs established early in the novel sets the stage for further acts of nonconformity, such as her opposition to watching the trial of Tom Robinson.
