Code breaking was a crucial part of the secret efforts of the allied forces during World War II. Though
modern day code breaking is a feat which can be achieved by means of using advanced technology,
during World War II, code breaking was a vital and dangerous endeavour. The Nazi s Enigma code
was one of the most difficult and essential ciphers to unscramble. The Bletchley Park code breakers

This report is about the social customs in America, Vietnam and China. Social customs include actions
and behaviors that are expected of a particular culture, and people could learn the particular culture via
its social customs. We introduced four aspects in the report: dining etiquette, gift presenting etiquette,
festival celebration and the wedding process. We tried to represent all three of these cultures in all of
the aspects of the report. The Chinese and Vietnamese cultures are quite similar in these areas, but
these two cultures differ greatly from the American culture. From these aspects, we can learn how
different the American culture, Vietnamese culture and Chinese culture are. We used primary sources
such as an interview, a survey, and our own personal experiences to form this report. We also used

secondary sources such as the Web to help move our research along. Our goal is to inform our

My Favorite Dad
When I was attending elementary school, my third grade teacher, Mrs. Leak, assigned the class a

Should schoolchildren be required to learn a second or even third language from a young age?
According to studies at the Cornell Language Acquisition Lab (CLAL), children who learn a second
language can maintain attention despite outside stimuli better than those who know only one language.
Learning foreign languages from a young age is much easier than trying to pick one up later in life,
researchers say that their elementary brains are most receptive to picking it up and enabling them to
speak the language fluently with little or no hint of a foreign accent. Schools around the country are
struggling to keep their foreign language programs alive. My interest in this topic has developed from
my cousins, who live out in California who have been taught a foreign from a younger age, and the
school I went to didn t start teaching it until the ninth grade.
Learning a second language from a young age can be beneficial for students, as Jamaal Abdul alim
talks about in his article, States are teaching core content in other tongues. In his article, he wrote a
quote from Hendrik J. Haarmann, the area director of cognitive neuroscience at the University of

1. Think about the men, apart from the hunter, mentioned in the story? How are they characterized? Is
the absence of men from Sylvia s world (up until the arrival of the hunter) a significant factor in the

Prior to meeting the hunter, it appears Sylvia was bullied/picked on by a boy who used to frighten her.
We also don t learn anything about her father, but I can infer that it wasn t a complete loving

In the beginning of the short story, we learn about Sylvia s love for nature. Nature gave her a sense of
utility the crowded manufacturing town could not offer. When she was walking home with Mistress
Moolly, the cow, they encountered a deserted cat that came to greet them. She whispered to the cat
saying, This is a beautiful place to live in, and she never should wish to go home (Page 527, para 3).
As Sylvia grows closer to the stranger she is in an inner conflict with the emotions of greed and her
love of nature. The monetary reward in revealing the heron s location gives Sylvia a temporary thrill,
as we learn from the use of third person limited point of view, No amount of thought, that night, could
decide how many wished for treasures the ten dollars, so lightly spoken of, would buy (Page 530, para
1). However, the story concludes in a relieving manner for the reader. Although, we do not know if the
hunter found the bird later on, the reader becomes alleviated by the fact the endangered bird was not
revealed at that moment. Regardless of the monetary reward, Sylvia will not betray her values about
