- 2. Overviews Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which generates ground motions in all possible direction radiating from the epicenter such that if a structure resides in that particular seismic zone it will undergo vibrations in lateral directions that may cause severe damage to the structure.
- 3. Key Features ❖ Earthquake engineering is a very challenging subject for structural engineers across the world. Since the phenomenon of earthquake involves huge destructive consequences it prioritizes structural engineers to design structures like buildings, bridges, dams etc. by taking into consideration earthquake forces in order to minimize structural damage, collapse, human deaths and injuries. ❖ This problem is often made worse by structural design that does not involve the provisions made in standard deign codes or an absence of inspection and quality control. ❖ Buildings are basically designed to support a vertical load in order to support the walls, roof and all the stuff inside to keep them standing. Earthquakes forces known as seismic forces act laterally or in a horizontal direction and hence the impact on the buildings or other structures is a bit more complicated to account for. ❖ Earthquake-resistant designs typically incorporate ductility (the ability of a building to bend, sway, and deform without collapsing) within the structure and its structural members. A ductile building is able to bend and flex when exposed to the horizontal or vertical shear forces of an earthquake.
