Ethics in the Search of Knowledge: A Note to Muslim Studentsiosrjce
Muslims should inculcate in their mind the idea that knowledge in Islam is sought and spread
purposely for Allah’s sake but not for one’s recognition or fame as viewed by many. When searching for
knowledge appropriate manners (A’daab) are to be observed with a view to getting beneficial knowledge from
the teachers. This is because good manners lead to prosperity while bad ones lead to misery. The Prophet
(SAW) was reported to have said in one of his traditions that "through good manners one reaches the status of
the person who not only fasts but who also stands late in the night to pray". He also says in another Hadith that
"Shall I not inform you of the most beloved to me and the one seated closest to me on the Day of Resurrection?
Those of you who are best in manners". The two Ahadith quoted stress the importance of good manners
expected to be imbibed by every Muslim who, particularly, wants his search for knowledge yield positive result.
This is true if we only understand that knowledge cannot be acquired or gained by merely consulting books.
Therefore, it is against this background that this article intends to discuss ethics in the search of knowledge: A
note to Muslim students.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

6. 10 DUTIES OF THE STUDENT
1. to purify his soul from impure traits and blameworthy characteristics .
2. to reduce to a minimum his ties with the affairs of the world and leave his kin
and country.
3. entrust to him the conduct of his affairs and submit to his advice .
4. pay no attention to the numerous differences of opinion which exist among
people.
5. should not allow any branch or kind of praiseworthy knowledge to escape him
without carefully examining it.
7. 10 DUTIES OF THE STUDENT (cont.)
6. observe some kind of order and begin with the most important.
7. no one should address himself to one branch of knowledge before he has
already mastered the branch which precedes it.
8. to know how to ascertain the noble nature of this or the other science.
9. the student’s purpose should, at the time, be the adornment and beautification
of his inner self with virtue, and at the end, nearness of Allah and ascent to the
neighbourhood of the heavenly hosts, the angels and the cherubim.
10. know the relation of the different sciences .
8. DUTIES OF THE TEACHER
1. to be sympathetic to students and treat them as his own children.
2. to follow the example of the Law-giver: he should seek no remuneration for his
services on behalf of knowledge and accept neither reward nor thanks.
3. should not withhold from the student any advice, or allow him to attempt the
work of any grade unless he is qualified for it, or permit him to address himself to
abstruse sciences before he has mastered those which are clear.
4. the teacher, in dissuading the student from his evil ways, should do so by
suggestion rather than openly, and with sympathy rather than with odious
upbraiding.
9. DUTIES OF THE TEACHER (cont.)
5. the person who is teaching a certain science should not belittle or disparage the
value of other sciences before his students.
6. limit the student to what the latter is able to understand and should not require of
him anything which his mind cannot grasp for fear that he would develop a feeling
of dislike for the subject, and his mind would become confused.
7. give his backward students only such things as are clear and suitable to their
limited understanding and should not mention to them anything about the details
that are apt to follow but which he deems fitting for the present to withhold.
8. the teacher do what he teaches and not allow his works to give the lie to his words.
10. Analysis and discussion
• From the contents, it shows that Al-Ghazali really emphasized on the manners, ethics and
responsibilities of students. Indeed, he also brief the manners as teachers towards their
