WHAT IS A DRUG ?
A drug is any chemical you take that effects the
way your body works. Alcohol, caffeine, aspirin
and nicotine are all drugs. A drug must be able to
pass from your body into your brain. The drug
changes the messages the brain cells are sending
to each other by interfering with
neurotransmitter. There may be soft, hard ,
physcoactive, legal and illegal drugs.
Types of drugs
Drugs may be of
several types but a few
of them are listed here:
1. Cannabis
2. Cocaine
3. Ecstasy
4. Hallucinogens
5. Heroin
6. Methamphetamine
๏‚จ Cannabis: Tobacco-like greenish and brownish material made
up of the dried flowering tops and leaves. All types of
cannabis are usually smoked. E.g. : Bongo, Ganja, Grass,
Thai stick.
๏‚จ Cocaine: Fine white powder extracted from the leaves of the
cocoa plant that acts as a powerful stimulant. Cocaine is
usually sniffed/snorted or injected. E.g. : Crack, Cake, Coke,
Lady.
๏‚จ Ecstasy: Man-made drug manufactured using different
chemicals and drugs. It is usually taken orally but can also be
injected. E.g. : Snackies, New Yorkers, Disco biscuits.
๏‚จ Hallucinogens: Synthetic drugs that alters userโ€™s state of
consciousness. They are usually swallowed. E.g. : LSD,
mescaline, psilocybe mushrooms.
๏‚จ Heroin: It is an addictive drug with painkilling properties
processed from morphine. Pure heroin is a white powder. It is
usually injected but can be sniffed or inhaled. E.g. : Smack,
Brown, Junk, White lady.
๏‚จ Methamphetamine: It is a synthetic drug that belongs to the
group of drugs known as ATS. It is available in the form of
powder, tablet or crystals. It can be swallowed, injected or
smoked. E.g. : Crack meth, Ice, Tik, Yaba.
Factors leading to the drug abuse
๏‚จ People suffering from anxiety, bipolar disorder,
depression or other mental illnesses use drugs to
ease their suffering
๏‚จ Teenagers and young adults see their family
members, friends or role models using drugs and
rationalize that they can too.
๏‚จ Boredom is a big factor in drug abuse in teens and
young adults
๏‚จ People think drugs will help relieve stress..
๏‚จ People assume that if a doctor prescribes a
drug, it must be alright for all the people and
for the same problem.
๏‚จ Usually teenagers think that drugs will help
them fit in. When hanging out with friends,
people want to be like their crew.
๏‚จ People use drugs to cover painful memories in their
past. Many people go through extremely traumatic
events in their life.
๏‚จ People experience the drugs describe their feelings as
the best feelings of their life.
Impacts of drug abuse on lives
๏‚จ Drug abuse can adversely effect your relationship
resulting in conflicts between friends and
partners leading to family breakdowns.
๏‚จ Being under the influence of drugs could put you
at risk of being in danger.
๏‚จ Drug abuse can also effect your academics.
๏‚จ The after effects of using drugs can reduce your
ability to work in a job.
๏‚จ Financial pressure builds up as a person spends
his allowance in buying drugs.
๏‚จ A person becomes increasingly dependent upon drugs as
he starts thinking that he can not operate or function
properly without drugs.
๏‚จ Some drugs can increase the likelihood of reacting in a
violent way or to be a victim of violence.
๏‚จ Drugs alter your actions thus, the changes in behavior can
make you stressed and depressed.
๏‚จ Psychosis may occur which is a mental disorder that where
you lose touch with reality.
๏‚จ Drug abuse increases the chance of accidents and injuries.
๏‚จ Internal organs get damaged and risk of infectious diseases
increases like Hepatitis .
Treatment and prevention for the
dug abuse
๏‚จ Effectively deal peer pressure and this can be done
by finding a good way to say no or find good people
to hang out.
๏‚จ Seek help for mental illness from a trained
professional before you opt for drugs.
๏‚จ Keep a well-balanced life.
๏‚จ Drug addicts can be treated by taking appropriate
help from clinical and counseling psychology.
๏‚จ Awareness programs in schools and colleges to be
carried out
๏‚จ Effective communication between family members
can help you to solve out your problems.
๏‚จ Create peaceful environment around you
๏‚จ Proper medications for the drug addicts can help
them recover their damaged organs, infectious
diseases and disturbed state of mind.
CONCLUSION
๏‚จ To conclude weโ€™ll rather give an overview of the
relation between psychology and drug abuse. The
problem of drug abuse falls in the domain of
addiction psychology which comprises of clinical
and abnormal psychology disciplines that deals
diagnoses, evaluates, treats, and supports clients
dealing with addiction. Addiction can be viewed by
the professionals as a disease or a choice. The
psychologists use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,
Dialectal Behavior Therapy and Behaviorism for
the treatment of the patients.
