Themes Of Xenophobia In District 9
Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth, not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their
dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are
managed by Multi National United, which is not concerned with the aliens welfare but will do
anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent Wikus contracts a
mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9. The
film was directed by Neill Blomkamp and starred Sharlto Copley (Wikus). It begins as a
documentary style investigation and then as the film continues it becomes more conventional and
character driven following Wikus and his transformation into a Prawn. The film focuses... Show

In the movie, there are signs saying either no prawns or no humans and the humans show a major
sign of xenophobia towards the prawns. In this day in age we see a lot of hatred towards
foreigners, in particular, terrorists. In the beginning of the movie you see Blomkamp interviewing
the humans about the prawns. They show a great level of hatred and disgust for the prawns
intruding on their town. In the real world, we see this same form of hatred or disgust from certain
people about the immigrants and refugees intruding on and taking over many American s jobs.
Blomkamp wants to push the issue that there is great hatred throughout the world today. The main
reason he produced the film in Johannesburg was because there were high tensions between native
south Africans and Zimbabwean refugees. He wanted to try to make the town he grew up in great
again. Blomkamp wanted to open people s eyes with the use of science fiction to show that in some
ways we treat other humans like the humans treated the prawns. Differential Criticism studies
works by and about oppressed groups, including ethnicities, women and homosexuals. The focus is
particularly on how oppressed people and their artistic or intellectual productions have been
marginalized, stifled, or demonized, and how preoccupations with difference (framing them as the
Other ) have shaped the portrayal of these groups (Fourteen Critical Approaches for Work in the

The pressure field changes across the disk and the free stream velocity is continuous through the
propeller disk.
The following equation states that the propeller thrust is equal to the rate of change of axial
momentum at the disk.

With reference to the above diagram, bernoulli equation can also be applied between sections 0 1
upstream and 2 3 downstream of the propeller.
Advance Ratio
The advance ratio is a measure of the advancement of the propeller in one revolution, measured in
a number of diameters. The advance ratio is also a scaling parameter,
Indicating that all the propellers with the same J, and geometrically similar, have the same
performance index. The table below shows aircraft speed range for a range of practical advance
ratios.

Three Subtests
Another type of abuse is sexual abuse. Hudson et al. (1993) suggested that sex offenders have
general shortcomings in functions of their emotions. They established that rapists and pedophiles
are substantially not as sensitive to the perception of emotions displayed by others, when
compared to domestic abuse offenders. In the study conducted by Puglia, Stough, Carter, and
Joseph (2005), they chose 19 imprisoned sex offenders, who were chosen from Her Majesty s
Prison and Ararat, 18 detained non sex offending prisoners from HM Prison Ararat and Her
Majesty s Prison Langi Kal Ka, and 19 control participants without criminal history and who were
not connected to any crime. The individuals from the control group were from Australia. To conduct

The participants were asked to do three subtests from the MSCEIT, which consisted of 35 items.
The first subtest is the perception branch, in which the subjects were to express, on a five point
scale, the emotion that is being presented in different photographs such as faces, landscapes, or an
abstract design. The second subtest is the assimilation branch. In this subtest, the participants were
asked to associate words to a given emotion and indicate the similarities of the word and the
emotions; An example is, cold, blue, sweet. The last subtest is the management branch. In this
subtest, the subjects were asked to indicate the effectiveness of an action would be in managing
their internal emotions. With this method, it is revealed that the results of the sex offenders are not
that significantly different in comparison to the control group. As a way of contrast, these findings
did not yield the same conclusion that Hudson et al., (1993) suggested. The results from the
MSCEIT assessment did not display the deficit of emotional function of sexual offenders.
Furthermore, this study helps support the suggestion that the emotional deficiency the sexual
offenders have are more likely to be specific to the sexual offences they have committed (Fernandez

Argumentative Essay On Prejudice And Prejudice
Social conformity can be toxic, it often leads to the epidemic that is prejudice. To give a better idea
of what prejudice means, Judice translates to judge in Latin, therefore the term prejudice literally
translates into pre judgment . There are innumerable forms of negative preconceived notions that
exist in our world today, the biggest one being racism, which often is a stem of having anti
immigration views. Immigration prejudiceis not unknown to any person who lives in America and
has eyes and ears to know it exists, but it s important to know that prejudice is not innate, it is
learned, and as long as we allow our society to practice xenophobia among present and future
generations we will never be free of it. According to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prejudice doesn t discriminate, it lives in all runs of people: Whites, African Americans, Asians,
Hispanics, Republicans, Democrats, men, women, young, old you name it. In a perfect world this
level of hatred wouldn t be the norm, but it is. It is so widespread that there s tangible evidence that
shows even Hispanics (immigrant or not) have negative affiliations with immigrants. How can this
be when Hispanics take the cake for making up the largest portion of new comers. Interestingly
enough, research done by the Pew Research Center concludes that the more Hispanics have become
accustomed to nativism in American culture, the more likely they are to feel negatively toward the
matter. This sense of superiority is quite frankly sickening, to know that even counterparts of
immigrants could fall suspect of discrimination goes to show its daunting power. What s more, the
false notion that immigrants are purely responsible for the uprooting of crime, scarce resources,
drugs, disease, and more have been fed to natives by the media and those in powerful positions to
continue defacing the image of immigration as there s no solid evidence to justify being anti
foreign. As the descendant of an immigrant father and his father before him, I ve witnessed
firsthand the means and consequences of trying to enter this country and become a citizen. The

Don Quixote Journey
Believe it or not, I was once a legendary knight errant by the name of Don Quixote. I travelled
across the Spanish province of La Mancha with my loyal squire, Sancho Panza, in search of
adventures, beautiful ladies, and princesses to whom I can offer my knightly services. I was a
bold and valiant knight. My greatest and most memorable adventure, perhaps, is my encounter
with the giants of the plains of La Mancha who had thousand of arms. The battle which ensued
was so glorious that whoever hears of it strangely accuses me of being a madman. However, after
my forced retirement from being a knight errant, I fell ill and during my last hour I realized that
all my adventures were indeed hallucinations and my greatest adventure was simply a comical duel
between I and windmills. A short while after dying as Don Quixote, I became Dr. John Watson, the

It is the easiest and most effective way to acquire new information, radical ideas, useful concepts,

Of Studies , wrote something similar when he said that, Reading maketh a full man, By that he
meant reading gives us a solid foundation in a world where one can only advance himself socially
and economically when he has a wealth of knowledge and information at his disposal.
Yet I believe that the most beautiful thing about reading is that it develops and sharpens our
imagination. It is because of this sole fact that I chose to devote my life to reading. When we read
books, especially novels; the plot, characters, and settings, are all visualized within our heads. You
may not realize it but as you read more books, and the more you use your imagination, the more
precise and powerful your critical thinking skills become which gives you edge in the competitive

skeptical throughout my whole life. Observing names from other people I always envied how
cool their names were until I decided to have a better understanding of what mine meant. I asked
my mother what my name meant to her, she responded that it meant Victory to the people in
Greek. I was quite shocked and astounded how mu name felt powerful and inspiring to me.

The Antamina mine, was the underlying asset of this bidding process which included 40
bidders; though that number was steadily dwindling, and by June of 1996 was down to only a
handful serious contenders. Within the copper mining industry, there were three dominant
players, RTZ CRA, Noranda, and a joint venture of Inmet Mining and Rio Algom. These three
were believed to be the primary bidders. All three had ancillary mineral mining practices aside
from copper, as well as other areas of business. RTZ CRA was the largest of these three, and was
believed to be the best positioned to prevail on the bidding. The other bidders were smaller in
capital but had the same level of mining experience. The joint venture of Rio Algom and Inmet
had only $1.5 billion combined market capitalization, but Inmet had a healthier capital structure
and less financial risk which created a lower cost of capital. The bidding rules reduced the
sensitivity of capital and created comparative advantages for smaller players. For RTZ CRA to
execute on their bid and acquire Antamina at a strategically economic price, they would have to
have made the decision of whether this property would provide long term economic and strategic
value. Since their footprint was global, they would be unable to introduce certain synergies based
on asset proximity of their other properties. Antamina would most likely have to be acquired and
operated as a stand alone project. Internal

Hollins University Personal Statement Sample
I would like to apply for Summer Statistical Research Experience Undergraduate Program. I heard
about this internship from my Math professor, Dr. Julie Clark. I am an international student from
Nepal. I intend to major in Mathematics Statistics, and Environmental Science at Hollins
University. I have a comprehensive background in Mathematics and Science, my emphasis is
researchand data collection. I enjoy this concentration because I find great satisfaction being part of
the problem solving process.
Through a previous internship in Nepal with Trail Bridge Support Units (TBSU), I was able to
work in rural villages and connect with villagers. Our goal was to construct sustainable trail
bridges that would connect two communities. I assisted with data collection; surveying local
people to pinpoint their needs. Since I spoke with villagers directly, I was able to find the middle
ground between former data and people s needs making progress in TBSU s goal to carry out
bridge construction. In addition to this field work, my background with Statistics, Environmental

The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster happened on February 1st, 2003, and was the second and final

external disaster planning with the Columbia. In my research it seems that NASA as long been an
advocate for the traditional approach to disaster management. Taking in to account the secret
classification that surrounds much of what happens, and the inner workings of a government
organization such as NASA, we should not be surprised of their approach to disasters. According
to our learning units (Session 6), the traditional model has been historically referred to as civil

Two specific ones standout concerning the Space Shuttle Columbia: strict adherence to standard
operating procedures , and a failure to adapt when performing tasks or functions (Learning Unit 6).
Another research group identifies these failures in its findings Behind the direct cause of the foam
strike, the report leveled damning critiques at NASA s pre and post launch decision making,
painting a picture of an agency dominated by milestone obsessed middle management. That focus
on narrow, group specific work and reporting, without a complementary focus on cross department
integration and communication, contributed at least as much to the loss of the shuttle as did the
foam impact (The Audacious Rescue Plan that Might have Saved Space Shuttle Columbia, 2014). I
m of the mindset that, had these shortfalls not been exposed and attributed to the loss of the
shuttle, there was little that could have been done to save the shuttle once the foam strike took
place. The time to correct that discrepancy should have been prior to flight, and according to
many articles I read, the detaching foam was a known issue; which places the blame back to an
organization that had problems adapting to any changes regarding safety. As with any emergency
disaster, not all aspects were failures. Once such noted example from our handouts (Learning
Lesson 7), was emergence. Due to the high altitude and extreme speed of the shuttle upon break
up, the debris field was quite large. These created a nightmare scenario for search teams,

Greed And Greed In The Gift Of The Magi
Greed and Charity
Greed is a selfish desire for more than is needed. Charity is the kindhearted goodwill toward or
love of humanity. Both terms are used to create central themes for the four stories we read in our
english class. All of these stories include characters that present greed or charity. In The Gift of the
Magi, the wife and the husband both gave up their prized possessions to get their significant other
a gift. Since the couple were poor and wanted to satisfy each other with a wonderful gift, they
had to give up what they never thought they would have before. I believe this shows charity in
their relationship. They both wanted the best of the best for each other and kindheartedly gave
up whatever they had. Della, the wife, asked someone to buy her long, silky, brown hair. Will
you buy my hair? asked Della. I buy hair, said Madame. Take yer hat off and let s have a sight at
the looks of it. As you can see, the wife sold her hair to buy her husband a gift which was a watch
band for his watch. The husband then revealed to his wife that he sold his watch to buy her a
comb. In The Fisherman and His Wife, both greed and charity are presented. The fisherman
consisted of a lot of charity. He was willing to give his wife whatever she wanted. The fisherman
s wife had so much greed. She wanted more than she already had. She was so greedy that she
thought of herself to be just like God. The couple first owned a pig stye of a house. From this,

Growth of Mormon Church Essay
On, April 6, 1830, a then 24 year old young man named Joseph Smith Jr. gathered in a small
room along with six other people to organize a Church that would change American history. Since
the age of 14, Joseph Smith had always been a source of contentment and ridicule by people of all
social classes and religions. Ten years earlier, in the spring of 1820, this young boydeclared that he
had seen a vision, that he had been visited by both God, and His Son, Jesus Christ.
This vision is a cornerstone of the Church that is known today as, The Church of Jesus Christ of

The Mormon religion is tied to millennialism, or the belief that Jesus Christ will someday return to
Earth and rule in righteousness for 1000 years only after there have been many catastrophes and
much suffering. This belief served a purpose for Joseph Smith, it solidified him as a prophet,
meaning as long as his followers would heed his words, also known as the revelations he
received directly from God , they would be saved. Millennialism, or dooms day preaching was
nothing new to the early colonists, Puritans as early as the 1600 s were convinced the end was
near, greatly contributing to societies beliefs.# The Millerites were a very popular dooms day sect
that was established in the early 1830 s, numbering nearly 50,000, they believed that the world
would end in 1844, and Christ would return to rule.# Mormon religion was also founded on
communal living, meaning that all members were expected to consecrate their
possessions back to God, and every family would have their land and goods given to them by the
church, dependent on their needs. Joseph Smith set up a system called the United Order to serve
this purpose, and it worked well. The poor were able to get the provisions they needed for their
family, while at the same time, the rich felt like they were admired for their sacrifices.#
By the end of 1830, 9 months after it had been established, the Mormon church had a congregation

The Lion s Body
Introduction: The Panthera Leo, also known as the lion, is a member of the cat family, and
shares many common traits of this family. The lion s body is very muscular, with less bone mass
than other animals of comparable size. This allows the lion to make powerful blows with its
forepaws heavy enough to break a zebra s back. Each paw has soft pads to make its movements
quiet enough to sneak up on prey. Lions walk on their toes which means they are digitigrade
walkers. The claws on the paw grow as a series of layers. As a layer wears, the layers shed, and a
new sharp pointed claw is then exposed. The lions body is covered with a brown coat, but
sometimes, a white variant that shows up. A mature male lion has a mane that covers... Show more

When a lion kills/threatens a farmer or a rancher s livelihood, that individual is likely to poach or
poison the lion in retaliation. Farmers and Ranchers are more likely to kill the lion to make sure

people living in lion territories, educating them about the lion s ecological importance, and
developing cheap ways to protect their subsistence.
Evidence of Evolution:
The lion s most common and recent ancestor lived around 124,000 years ago. Learning about the
lion s history has been difficult since animals living in tropical areas tend to leave fewer fossilized
remains behind. Around the time of the earliest lion s ancestor (124,000 years ago), tropical
rainforests expanded across equatorial Africa, and the Sahara region started turning into the
savannah. Lions living in the south and east of the continent became separated from, and had began
to diverge from, those who were living in the west and north. Then 73,000 years later, the continent
dried and the Sahara expanded, isolating off the lions in the west from those in the north.
At the same time, lions on the west expanded their range into Central Africa, which became more
inhabitable. At the end of the Pleistocene period, lions left North Africa, eventually reaching as far
as India. This meant that southern and

Hunger In The Hunger Game
In the novel Hunger Game, author Suzanne Collins narrates a girl name Katniss Everdeen who
voluntarily replaces her younger sister, Prime, to be one of the tribute to participate in the hunger
game. She is the family s backbone after her father died in a mining accident. The district only
gave them a small compensation but it s not enough to support her family s living. Soon, they run
out of money and suffer from hunger. They live in the District 12 where it s a poor and food
shortage region. People often suffer from hunger and Katniss is of no exception. In one section
of the story, Katniss could not trade old baby clothes for food or find food from trash bins. She
passes by a bakery one day and she is extremely hungry:
When I passed the baker s, the smell of fresh bread was so overwhelming I felt dizzy. The ovens
were in the back, and a golden glow spilled out the open kitchen door. I stood mesmerized by the
heart and the luscious scent until the rain interfered, running its icy fingers down my back, forcing
me back to life. (Collins 29)
Katniss is immersed in the smell of the aromas of bread, and although she is close to the bakery,
she is not able to eat the fresh bread. For her, the fresh bread will only be for viewing sensation
rather than tasting sensation, and I have a similar experience as Katniss who often suffer
hunger. As I read this section of Katniss, it reminds me that I was an acrobatic school in my 13
years old. Everyone attending the school had extraordinarily strict dietary restriction. Chocolates,
chips, breads, cookies are snacks that were prohibited. Rice and noodle were limited to only a
small amount for eating, because they are high carb and high starch food. We were only allowed
low calorie food to maintain our physiques even though we were extremely active and were
required to practice acrobatics on a regular basis. We didn t eat enough food before our physical
training, because we might vomit if we eat too much. Although these snacks were my favorite, I
could not eat them due to strict rules. I was only able to enjoy them through the senses of seeing
and smelling to satisfy my emotional need for these comfort foods. At the age of 17, six acrobatics,

Nicotine has a powerful addicting effect because it is absorbed rapidly into the pulmonary
circulation following inhalation from which it passes through the left side of the heart and into the
cerebral circulation. It rapidly crosses the blood brain barrier and binds to specific receptors in
various parts of the brain. Stimulation of receptors by nicotine results in the activation of a number
of neurohumoral pathways leading to release of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin,
vasopressin and various hormones. Nicotine causes the release of the substance b endorphin, an
endogenous peptide that also binds to opiate receptors. This indicates a link between addiction to
opiates, such as morphine and heroin, and addiction to nicotine.
Nicotine affects nearly all components of the endocrine and neuroendocrine systems, including
catecholamines, serotonin, corticosteroids and pituitary hormones.
Some of these endocrine effects are mediated by actions of nicotine on brain neurotransmitter
systems. In addition, nicotine causes skeletal muscle relaxation and has cardiovascular effects.
Nicotine is a powerful substance in controlling brain function. It interacts with specific receptors in
brain tissue, and initiates metabolic and electrical activity in the brain.

communication with one

The Introspection And Behaviorism Movements
The introspection and behaviorism movements in psychology both had certain flaws and
limitations that did not allow them to examine underlying cognitive processes. However, their flaws
in studying psychology were on opposite sides of the same coin. The reconciliation of these two
flawed fields, along with some other methods, led to the cognitive revolution and the eventual
emergence of cognitive psychology(Cognition, p. 13)
First, the introspection movement, led by Wundt and Titchener, sought to study the mind by having
each individual introspect and record their own thoughts and experiences (Cognition, p. 9). This
movement had participants train in the proper way to perform and document this introspection, but

12). However, they will likely not respond with the correct behavior to a nonsense sentence that
rhymes with the correct stimulus. This provides evidence of the fact that people are not reacting
solely to the stimulus itself, but rather the interpretation and meaning given to the stimulus by the
person s thoughts, memories, and previous experiences. Therefore, the field of behaviorism, which
produced credible, reproducible data, but completely ignored the subject s underlying motivations
for behavior, was flawed in an opposite way from introspection.
The cognitive revolution provided a way to create a field that would combine the best parts of
introspection and behaviorism, without either of their fatal flaws. The transcendental method,
developed by Immanuel Kant in the 1700s, proposed beginning with observable phenomena and
working backward to investigate why those processes may be occurring (Cognition, p. 13). By
adopting this method of taking objective, observable behaviors, and working backward to provide
possible explanations for these behaviors, cognitive psychology was able to come into its own as a
science.
The working memory system is what allows people to carry out basic everyday tasks, such as

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED)
This paper explores Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), a disorder categorized by the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM 5) as an impulse
control disorder. To understand this disorder research was collected on predisposing factors that
make an individual more vulnerable to IED. Research was also collected on precipitating and
perpetuating factors to explore what factors trigger the disorder and subsequently prolong the
symptoms. Finally, research was collected on how the disorder is diagnosed and current treatment
options for individuals diagnosed with IED.

The optimal goal of treatment for patients with IED is remission, which is the resolution of
symptoms or improvement to the point where only one or two symptoms of mild intensity persist.
If that goal is unattainable a practical goal is stabilizing the safety of the patient and others as well
as substantially improving the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms. To achieve these
treatment goals studies have shown the best treatment is a combination of medication and
psychotherapy (Alpert Spillmann, 1997). The use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
(SSRI) Fluoxetine has shown moderate to large improvement in the reduction of impulsive
aggressive behavior. The goal of the Fluoxetine is to balance out the altered serotonin levels that
are commonly altered in individuals with IED (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). In addition to medication
cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to reduce impulsive aggression, anger, and hostile
automatic thoughts. The therapies used include relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and
coping skills training. The rates of full remission from IED were 29% with fluoxetine alone and
33% from cognitive behavioral therapy alone. When combined the treatments are more effective
for sustained remission because they work through different mechanisms (Coccaro, M.D., 2012).
Studies have shown that IED symptoms precede the onset of other comorbid disorders and are
persistent and follow a chronic course of at least 12 years. Intervention at an early age is most
effective before development of comorbid disorders (Coccaro, M.D.,

Neutron Star Research Paper
A neutron star is created from an old, burnt out star. When the core of the star has burnt out and
turned into iron, energy is no longer being produced and the core of the star condenses very
quickly. This compacts all of the protons (+) and electrons ( ) creating neutrons (o) and neutrinos
which are particles that do not carry a charge but are similar to electrons. Yes, this is probably
where the name NeutronStarcame from. During the condensing of the star s core, the neutrinos are
able to escape, but the neutrons are squished together so much that their density is the same of an
atomic nucleus density. A violent explosion happens during this process and its called a supernova .
To put this into perspective, imagine taking something the size of our sun, if not bigger, and
compacting it into an area the size of a city. This is so dense that just a teaspoon of it would weigh
about 1 billion tons! Crazy, right? Now, neutron stars can only support themselves if... Show more

The insane rotational period is due to the conservation of angular momentum. When a star is just
it s average self, it gradually rotates slower and slower, but when it forms into a neutron star, it s

times, and this can be increased greatly depending on what space objects are near it. That being

Essay Theory of the Absurd
According to critic Mark Esslin, the concept of Theatre of the Absurd relates to the playwrights
loosely grouped under the label of the absurd attempt to convey their sense of bewilderment,
anxiety, and wonder in the face of an inexplicable universe ( The Theatre ). Esslin stressed the fact
that plays and stories belonging to the Theatre of the Absurd were composed of situations dealing
with the way a humanreacts to an event, without any form of importance, thus only stressing over
insignificant things and rejecting the notion of logic. Albert Camus, a major writer of the Theatre of
the Absurd , construes the Absurd by completely varying this concept through the human
personality, exemplified by The Strangerand The Myth of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This act depicts that there is no true point to human life. While Meursault is a strong believer of
this concept, humanity attempts to form reasonable justifications for an insane wrongdoing. In the
story, Meursault states that The truth is I never have much to say. I just keep quiet (Camus 104).
Thus, by Meursault statement, Camus stresses the absurdity of silence as the prosecution unravels
why Meursault committed murder of the Arab. The Stranger opens up with a simple quote:
Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know. I got a telegram from the home: Mother
deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours. That doesn t mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday
(Camus 3). This abrupt and distinctive introduction expresses the attitude that Meursault possesses
that there is simply no meaning to life as a whole a true stranger to the world. Furthermore, the
trial in which Meursault partakes is absurd in itself because the judge, prosecutors, and jury try to
find meaning where there is none to be found ( Albert ).
Moreover, Meursault implies that fact that he does not have any particular reason to live, and
death is the only way to go. His apathy and indifference about life further reveal the absurd in this
novel. According to McCarthy, Meursault is not truly saddened by his mother s death because in
his mind, death is an unavoidable force mankind is destined to die. During Meursault s mother s
funeral,

Global Warming And Climate Change
Attribution of recent climate change is the effort to scientifically ascertain mechanisms responsible
for recent changes observed in the Earth s climate, commonly known as global warming . The
effort has focused on changes observed during the period of instrumental temperature record, when
records are most reliable; particularly in the last 50 years, when human activity has grown fastest
and observations of the troposphere have become available. The dominant mechanisms are
anthropogenic, i.e., the result of human activity. They are: increasing atmospheric concentrations
of greenhouse gases global changes to land surface, such as deforestation increasing atmospheric
concentrations of aerosols.

Between the start of the Industrial Revolution in 1750, and the year 2005, the increase in the
atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide led to a positive radiative forcing, averaged over the
Earth s surface area, of about 1.66 watts per square metre .
Climate feedbacks can either amplify or dampen the response of the climate to a given forcing.
In the absence of forcings imposed on it, the climate system will still show internal variability . This
internal variability is a result of complex interactions between components of the climate system,
such as the coupling between the atmosphere and ocean . An example of internal variability is the
El NiГ±o Southern Oscillation.
Detection vs. attribution
Detection and attribution of climate signals, as well as its common sense meaning, has a more
precise definition within the climate change literature, as expressed by the IPCC. Detection of a
climate signal does not always imply significant attribution. The IPCC s Fourth Assessment Report
says it is extremely likely that human activities have exerted a substantial net warming influence on
climate since 1750, where extremely likely indicates a probability greater than 95%. is absorbed
and emitted naturally as part of the carbon cycle, through animal and plant respiration, volcanic
eruptions, and ocean atmosphere exchange.

Identity, Authenticity and Survival Essay
Formative Writing I : Identity, Authenticity and Survival by Kandru Manibhushan Rao Kwame
Anthony Appiah s essay on Identity, Authenticity and Survival is based on Charles Taylor s earlier
work on recognition and identity. Though Taylor s references to identity are mostly to collective
identity, Appiah s aim is to draw a comparison or even find a connection between individual identity
and collective identity. Identity A collective identity, explains Appiah, is the way an individual is
recognized based on broad qualities of categorization such as gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, etc. Whereas individual identity is born from personal characteristics such as wit,

* Individual Dimension: This comprises of traits such as intelligence, charm, wit, cupidity, etc.
which are all socially important features. Authenticity Authenticity, as described by authors such
as Lionel Trilling and Charles Taylor is the idea of living one s life by one s own reference and
for one s own self without yearning for recognition or acceptance from the collective or society.
However, Appiah points out that the search for authenticity is somewhat a paradoxical one. The
search for authenticity, as said, goes as much against the demands for a prescribed social life as it
does for the recognition of one s real self. There are two layer for recognition of originality
/authenticity: * How a person identifies or recognizes himself among other people. * How a culture
bearing group (minority) recognizes itself among a larger group. This leg of Appiah s essay focuses
extensively on Trilling s contradictory statements on authenticity. Claiming one s authentic
ethnicity, for example, for the need of expressing one s originality in turn proves one s need for
social acknowledgement for such originality. Even counterconventionalism requires needs
recognition from conventionalist. The problem that arises here is, in order to be original, an
individual has to understand convention and being everything that it is not, thus resulting in the
individual being not authentic,

Relationship Between The Old And New Testament
Relationship between the Old and New Testament
The relationship of the Old Testament and the New Testament has been the cause for a series of
debates for many generations. In some cases, the Bible is believed to be just a random assortment
of individual scrolls brought together in no precise fashion and for no particular reason, with the
Old and New Testament being completely separated from one another, this is of course false. The
Bible is, as a whole, the given Word of God brought together by a variety of human authors under
the Divine Inspiration of the One True Divine Author, God Himself. Similarly, the Old Testament
should not be neglected and replaced by the New Testament, as the New Testament is deeply rooted
within the Old Testament and the Old Testament is brought into full manifestation, through Jesus
Christ, within the New Testament. Therefore, the New Testament cannot exist without the Old
Testament and the Old Testament cannot become fulfilled without the New Testament. Throughout
the world, in many different religions, the Bible is used as a guide for life during our time on
earth, however, some have taken it upon themselves to edit the Word of God and remove parts of
scripture that they believe to be false or irrelevant. The Catholic Church understands that the Bible
exists without error, because of God s intervention and inspiration during its development, and that
we are to accept and become educated on all parts of the Bible in order to

Narcissa grew up in a devoted Presbyterian family, in a village of Prattsburg, New York. Narcissa
was an enthusiastic and highly influenced young woman, reading popular biographies of
American missionaries in the 19th century. Influenced by Harriet Newell, an evangelist who
traveled and worked in India, Narcissa was captivated by Harriet s spiritual struggles, letters and
sermons. As a young teenager, she felt life was slipping away, time was wasted, as she was ready
to adventure out and start ministering the word of God. 19th century American missions, was

slightly knew someone, who had the same goals and same need of marriage, in order to find
placement within the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), an
organization dealing with foreign missionary efforts. Years had passed, and eventually, Narcissa and
Marcus Whitman would marry (February 1836), allowing their ultimate dream of missionary
work to begin. With means to an end, Narcissa s goals would be met by wedlock. Narcissa s goals

eventually he succeeds but this juts sparks more problems.

point. These actions are strongly emotionally and not rationally driven..
Crisis. Andrew s expulsion from the band and school are the crisis moment because Andrew s
time and efforts of becoming a great drummer as seen in the first part of the movie get completely
reversed. He no longer has the approval of Fletcher and he is expelled from the band and school of
his choice.
Falling action. The pressure and pace of the movie slows down considerably. Andrew s dreams
and hopes are almost lost. Also the romance he started runs cold. He also gives up on his belief and
admiration for Fletcher.
Climax. This is the most emotionally tense part after the crisis. Everything seems to turn to the
worse for Andrew once again. Failing in front of a public audience is the emotional trigger that
unleashes Andrew s pride and confidence like it was never before. He finally gets the courage to
liberate himself of Fletcher s dominance in a constructive way (not in a confrontational and
indirect way as he did before in the crisis and falling action)

Alexis De Tocqueville, Democracy in America
Aristocracy is a phenomenon that is perhaps as natural a summer crop, and as devastating as the

strong advocate of the aristocracy, it is a part of the natural order and necessary. His position may

A community bound by social class is often referred to as a slaving society. The people at the
bottom of this system are indebted to those above with nowhere else to turn. The man who is

has only the aristocrats to turn to for justice. Unfortunately, a man needs justice most when he is
mistreated by the aristocracy.
The aristocracy is amp;#8220;closely attached to something placed out of their own sphere, ; is
another idea that De Tocqueville had of the aristocracy. In reality, the aristocracy probably had
very little to do with anything outside of their amp;#8220;sphere ;. He also claims that
amp;#8220;they are often disposed to forget themselves. ;. If aristocrats thought about anything
besides themselves, then perhaps they would have eased some of the suffering in the world. They
could not know or care about anything that was not in their immediate world. It is unlikely that
they would be so out of their amp;#8220;sphere ; that they could have possibly known the poor
man amp;#8217;s plight, or have cared. It does not hurt the aristocrat if families live on the street.

It is clear that some of the UN missions have received many restrictions from the host country
authorities. Before the mission starts, the responsibility of the country s leaders is to make the
special agreement with the UN. The agreement is signed between the UN and the leaders of the
government. Based on the agreement, the host nation s leaders must support the UN

Nevertheless, in some cases, this agreement is violated by political leaders of the country. For

Examples Of Dysfunctional Relationships
Dysfunctional People in Relationships
Have you ever wondered why some people stay in a dysfunctional relationship? Dysfunctional
relationships are relationships that do not perform their appropriate function. In The Yellow
Wallpaper, The narrator is a doctor who although probably filled with good intentions, comes off
seeming domineering. The narrator and her husband move into a manor for the summer to help her
with her temporary nervous depression a slight hysterical tendency. Female patients were not to
listened to by male patients, but because back then women were not in positions of power. The two
main reasons why their relationship is dysfunctional is the way John treats the narrator and the fact
that she has postpartum depression so she is not herself.
The medical world has changed a lot since back then. For instance, there were no female doctors
at that time. In the 1800 s, much was unknown in the terms of health. The mortality rate was high
and life expectancy was low. Parents, rich or poor, had no way of combating the deadly diseases
and infections that often took their children s lives. Deadly outbreaks of cholera ( an infection in
the small intestine) to the flu were, understandably, a leading cause of death in children at the
time. After all, children s immune systems are not fully developed and are therefore weaker in the
terms of fighting off these fatal diseases. Medicine has advanced dramatically from the 1800 s to
the present.Today, although not all children are healthy if any, foods available to them, the overall
diet of children has improved. Also, with what is known
about diseases and transmission, many deadly diseases are under control. Luckily, today it is much
more common for people also have regular checkups with the doctor, from the time they are in the
womb through adulthood.
One reason why John and the narrator s relationship is dysfunctional is that John treats the narrator
like a child. The relationship between the narrator and John is not overly loving, but unlike many
people, I do not believe that John was intentionally trying to hurt her. John cares about his wife, he
just refuses to admit that his own prescribed treatment may, in fact, be the wrong treatment. John

Political Parties And The Republican Party Platform
Generally speaking, anyone who lives in the United States of America knows that there are two
main political parties the Republicans and the Democrats. Having two main parties has its
advantages and, of course, its disadvantages. For example, in By the People James E. Monroe
and Rogan Kersh (301) point out having this type of system creates predictability and stability.
However, they also declare (301) it can lead to a gridlock. This is not a new concept either as
there has been a divide since the beginning of both parties. The two parties more often than not
disagree on various issues, while rarely agreeing on what is best for the country.
Democrats and Republicans highly differ when comparing views on climate change. The
Democrats accept human role in climate change while many Republicans question if climate
change is even real. In the 2016 Democratic Party Platform (27), they state in the first 100 days of
the next administration, the president will convene a summit of the words best engineers, climate
scientists, policy experts, activists, and indigenous communities to chart a course to solve the
climate crisis. This is highlighted previously when President Obama, a Democrat, traveled to Paris
for a convention about climate change where he met other leaders around the world to make a plan
to help fix the issues surrounding climate change. This shows the basic principles of the Democratic
Party as internationalist and having the large government as it states in the

Furthermore, I can see from this graph that the GDP per capita in the U.S.A and Mexico was

H1N1 Influenza ( Swine Flu ) is a flu pandemic that has recently spread all around the world. The
Swine Flu began its massive spread through Mexico in April (2009) and by June, the World Health
Organization raised the alert level to a full blown pandemic across the globe. The virus has spread
rapidly throughout the world. Luckily, the governments around the globe have offered an
immunization flu shot against this pandemic that is available to some citizens at this present time.
In Lawrence Gostin s Swine Flu Vaccine: What Is Fair? (2009), he explains his doubts for the
Swine Flu vaccination by emphasizing how rich countries have a large advantage over poor
countries in receiving the vaccine, how high authorities are hardly helping the... Show more content

In his article, Swine Flu Vaccine: What Is Fair?, Gostin points out that rich countries in general
will probably use their vastly superior spending power to acquire vaccines. Stockpiling by the rich,
of course, leaves poor countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America much more vulnerable (11).
After all, everyone needs to be protected from the dangers of H1N1 Influenza throughout the world
and income should not play a role in who is vaccinated. It is a reality that every individual is just
as important as the next and should have a fair chance at a vaccination. Organizations are
creating the vaccines with the idea of profit in mind and this is not fair to the poorer countries
around the globe. Wealthy countries are definitely more likely to acquire vaccinations in relation
to poorer ones. Second, it is advisable that everyone should get vaccinated against H1N1
Influenza because it can prevent the Swine Flu from spreading any further. If the entire world s
population was vaccinated against the Swine Flu, this would result in the complete control of the
virus. We need to stop H1N1 Influenza in its tracks and protect all citizens from the flu regardless
of their income or social class. Gostin observes that President Obama plans to spend a minuscule
$350 million of Swine Flu resources for global health and child survival, and two thirds of that sum
will go to

Leadership Styles And Leadership Skills
According to our textbook, leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers
who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes (Daft, 2014, pg. 5). In
another word, leadership is not defined by what one individual does, but as the ability to form an
alliance, motivate, empowered, coach, and to build relationship with others. Leadershipis a set of
skills that leaders can practice over time. In addition, there are different leadership perspectives
one can develop in order to become an effective leader. Furthermore, there are a number of
leadership styles leaders can adapt to. Among them are micromanaging, coaching, democratic,
delegating, and many more. All these leadership styles can be added to a... Show more content on

Many researchers have lodged a number of theories of leadership to better understand
leadership, and most importantly, why some people are better leaders than others. For example,
behavioral theories of leadership focus on the leader s behavior towards followers. Theorist
concluded that a leader s behavior will not only reveal his or her leadership influences, but also
determine his or her leadership success. Behavioral theories support a number of different
approaches to mandate. The text book describes two important behaviors leaders demonstrate,
autocratic and democratic. According to Daft, an autocratic leader tends to centralize authority and
derive power from position, control of rewards, and coercion (2014, pg. 44). For example,
followers rely on their leaders for everything, and they have limited access. On the other hand,
democratic leaders delegate authority to others, encourage participation, relies on subordinate s
knowledge for completion of tasks, and depends on subordinate respect for influence (Daft, 2014,
pg. 44). Followers with democratic leaders have a better chance to grow in an organization. Traits
are the distinguishing personal characteristics of a leader, such as intelligence, honesty, self
confidence, and appearance (Daft, 2014, pg. 36). Trait theories assume that people ingrained certain
qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. Trait theories often identify particular

Amur Leopard Animal Extinction
Habitat destruction, deforestation, ozone depletion, global warming, and poaching. These actions
and ecological happenings are creating a world where animals are going extinct at rapid rates. Our
world is on the brink of what scientists believe is the sixth mass extinction. Unlike the five previous
mass extinction, the latest one killing a majority of the dinosaurs, the main causes for this current
extinction are anthropogenic reasons, not natural events.
Scientists calculate that without humans about one to five species would die a year, which is
considered the background rate of extinction. But in our current society human activities are

and problems increases and that can threaten the integrity of the species. This is common within
species with small number of wild populations. With the Species Survival Plan, the zoos would

produce high genetic variability. The new young will then be matched with an animal of the
opposite to continue the process and increase the population of genetically different species
(Species Survival PlanВ® (SSP) Programs).
One specific examples of a species that has had some success with the Species Survival Plan is
the Amur Leopard. The Amur leopard is critically endangered with only an estimated 30 to 40
adults left in the wild. The Species Survival Plan thus far has been able to boost the population
with an estimated 50 adults to be in the wild by the end of 2015. This would be a 75 percent
increase from the estimate numbers in 2012. Before the Species Survival Plan, inbreeding was a
danger to the integrity of the Amur Leopard, but with the increase of the wild population and the
population in zoos around the world, the species looks to continue its rebound (Amur Leopards).

Monarchy Vs. Constitutional Monarchy
Absolute Monarchy vs Constitutional Monarchy
The difference between absolute monarchy and constitutional monarchy is that in the absolute
monarchy, the monarch holds the supreme or absolute powers, whereas in the constitutional
monarchy, the head of state is a hereditary or elected monarch.
The law within a constitutional monarchy might be different from the law within an absolute
monarchy. Differences between absolute and constitutional monarchies emerged during the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when many European countries experimented with absolutism
and constitutional monarchies.
Absolute monarchy is also called undemocratic monarchy and constitutional monarchy is also
called a liberal monarchy. In the absolute monarchy, the king... Show more content on

United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Malaysia, Luxemburg and Jordan are among the
nations that have constitutional or limited monarchy system whereas Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Vatican
City, Swaziland, Oman and Qatar are some of the few nations that still have absolute monarchs.
Summary:
1. Absolute monarchy or undemocratic monarchy transmits absolute powers to the monarch who
acts as a dictator or head of the state.
2. Constitutional monarchy or liberal monarchy gives limited powers to the monarch as in the
monarchy of England.
3. In the constitutional monarchy, the prime minister of the state holds the maximum powers and
political effectiveness.
4. Absolute monarchs were initiated due to holy wars and the decline of the church.
5. Constitutional monarchy was initiated when the monarchs emerged as irresponsible and careless
leaders.
Absolute Monarchy in France: Louis XIV
An Absolute Monarch Rises Soon after Louis XIV became king, disorder again swept France. In
an uprising called the Fronde, nobles, merchants, peasants, and the urban poor each rebelled in
order to protest royal power or preserve their own. On one occasion, rioters drove the boy king
from his palace. It was an experience Louis would never forget. When Mazarin died in 1661, the

Domestic Partnerships Should be Legal Essay
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for
same sex couples to marry. Should gay marriages be legal? Clearly we as a nation are undecided on
this issue. Gay rights groups are fighting for rights while religious groups are fighting against
gay marriage. I do NOT believe it is fair to discriminate against gays for being together. America is
a free country and people should be able to be in a relationship with whomever they desire. Gay
marriageis only legal in a few states. In some of these states, the uniting of two gays is called a
civil unionor domestic partnership. I do not think it is right to ruin the holy sacrament of marriage.
Although I do not promote gay... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is clear that one side of the argument is going to be unhappy with any settlement. (A Primer on
Same Sex Marriage, Civil Unions, Domestic Partnerships, and Defense of Marriage Acts)
Gay marriages are highly debated and opposed. In California the opposition to gay marriage
enjoyed a win by having legislators reconsider banning gay marriage. Through rallying and other
measurements the opposition of gay marriage is working to overturn same sex marriage. If
legislation is overturned, it would allow marriage only between a man and a woman. This would
also eliminate the right to civil unions by gays in the state. We must seek a solution to same sex
marriage. Same sex marriage will continue to be an ongoing legal battle. It is important we find a
solution that both sides of the argument agree on or come closest to a compromise between the two
sides. (Gay Marriage Showdowns)
Civil unions are a practical solution to this problem. Civil unions provide a full extension of
marital benefits for gays. Civil unions are only recognized by the states that initiated the process.
This means if a civil union united couple where to travel out of state they are not recognized as a
civil union by that particular state. Civil unions would start a special tradition among gays and
leave the tradition of marriage between man and woman pure. Some states have legislation that is
very strict against gay marriage such as Texas. Strict legislation

Analysis Of James Baldwin s The Blues
Sonny s Blues, a short story by famed African American author James Baldwin, is the story of
two bothers. Other famous stories of two brothers include both The Prodigal Son parable and the
story of Cain and Abel, both from which Baldwin clearly draws inspiration from. Baldwin grew
up with many religious teachings, as his adoptive father, David Baldwin, was a preacher. Though
the relationship between father and son was not enviable, Baldwin still grew up active in his
religion (James Baldwin Biography). Baldwin, despite growing up in the Baptist church with a
preacher for a father began to convert to Pentecostalism began in his early teenage years when he
accompanied friends to a Pentecostal church, where, at the age of fourteen, he became street
preacher (James Baldwin Biography). Of those years as a preacher, Baldwin recalled, Those three
years in the pulpit I didn t realize it then that is what turned me into a writer, really, dealing with all
that anguish and that despair and that beauty. Many of his works prominently feature religion, and
mimic the bible in language and tone (James Baldwin About the Author). In Sonny s Blues, and
many other of Baldwin s writings, the figure of the musician represents a move towards an anti
institutional spirituality and suggests the ways in which Baldwin was becoming, not less secular,
but move aware of the need to distinguish between the structured religion of the church and the
authenticity of a self spirituality, a

Femme Fatale Pink lips. Long nails. Extravagant jewelry. Flirty dresses. High heels. These are
some of the typical things your average femme lesbian prides herself on. These are some of the
things I pride myself on. My appearance constitutes a large part of my identity and self image. I
am your standard girl next door, except, I am not waiting on that handsome athletic jock to hit
on me, I m waiting on the other girl next door to come swoop me off my feet and ride into the

like it s a prerogative. We think that we have the capability to pinpoint any woman in a crowd
and say Yes! She s one of us. But where does this presumed gaydar come from? Is it a feeling we
get, a judgment of mannerisms, something we see in ourselves reflected in others, or is it simply
what people wear? Do short hair, plaid shirts, Jordan s and ties delineate what we perceive a
lesbian to be? Gaydar is probably a conglomeration of all these attributes, but we can t deny that the
most conventional and simplest way to ascertain someone s sexual orientation is from what they re
wearing. This process is highly inaccurate. Clothes are just a way to categorize us into subcultures.
Indeed, we can all recount that one lesbian that was so butch, she could be spotted from a mile
away, and we

Women Roles In The Progressive Era
Women s Active Role Throughout the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, gender roles began to
change as women became active participants in American society. For instance, women became
active in expressing their views against alcohol and pushed for the prohibition and temperance.
Organizations such as The Women s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), argued that alcohol led
to societal problems. Male and female reformers banned together to argue that alcohol was immoral
and causing a negative impact on women. Women, if married, would experience an abusive, violent
drunk husband who neglected his family and gambled his money away. Thus, the evils of alcohol
became part of the progressive agenda that eventually led to the passage of the 18th amendment.
Along with prohibition, women also took active roles in acquiring suffrage. In The Politics of Good
Government, Gayle Gullett argued that in the California Women s Movement built a nonpartisan
broad suffrage umbrella that sought to enhance their special interests. Middle class women assured
their male allies that women s enfranchisement was essential to progressivism. Furthermore, middle
and working class women argued that suffrage would not only protect working women but women
in general. Working class men and women also united to seek reform. Thus, through these
heterogeneous groups, the California Women s Movement built a unified coalition that led to
women s suffrage in 1911. [46] As America entered the First Great War, the

Sexism In Cinderella
Many have said that the traditional tale, Cinderella, embodies patriarchal views and shows little
respect for women unless they are being portrayed as princesses. Glass, a modern retelling of
Cinderella, by Francesca Lia Block, sees the old tale of Cinderella from a new feminist light
whilst not challenging the original structure of the story. Feminist retellings of old tales try to turn
misogynistic messages around. The article, Feminist Frauds on the Fairies? Didacticism and
Liberation in Recent Retellings of Cinderella, by Karlyn Crowley and John Pennington, sheds
light on to the fact that sexism in fairy tales needs to be addressed and fixed. The authors of the
article state that feminist critics are worried about the way women are portrayed and how genderis
analyzed in fairytales. However, some feminists use fairytales as texts to help discuss gender.
They retell these tales to liberate women from the passiveness of traditional fairytales. Feminist
tales are agents of a new socialization and are being used to create discussion on social choices,
gender roles, and gender equality (Crowley and Pennington 299). This article discusses multiple
modern retellings of Cinderella including the fairy tale, Glass. Another article that addresses
gender roles in fairy tales is A Wave of the Magic Wand: Fairy Godmothers in Contemporary
American Media by Jeana Jorgensen. This article focuses on how helpers, donors, and fairy
godmothers aid in helping heroines at various

The Significance Of Power In Homer s Odyssey
Power is the definitive goal for the characters of Homer s The Odyssey. In a society ruled by gods,
relationships are influenced by a gods power, which also affects relationships between two mortals.
This explains why the relationship between Telemachus and Athena becomes submissive opposed
to the dominant and disrespectful relationship, which Telemachus has with his mother, Penelope.
The difference in relationships between Telemachus and Athena to Penelope and Telemachus, in
Fagles translation of Homer s The Odyssey, is due to the significance of power within the poem.

anyone else; it is informal and what we would interpret as disrespectful... Show more content on

that the superiority and respect that Telemachus gives to Athena, is more likely demanded of him.
When she says, What s this nonsense slipping through your teeth? , she is downgrading his views
by calling it nonsense . Athena is verbally placing Telemachus below her, demeaning his certainty.
In addition by saying It s light work for a willing god to save a mortal even half the world away,
Athena is implying that she is helping Telemachus willingly and she has the ability to stop doing
so, whenever she wishes. In courteous manner, she is reminding him who is truly in

Requirements And Issue Management Systems
1.Requirements and Issue Management Systems
Requirements and issue management systems allow managers or leaders to classify and affiliate
characteristics with them, and to establish and evaluate dependencies and other common ties.
Requirements set the stage for a project and issue management is an important process of
identifying and resolving issues (Cook, 2015). Shaw Industries used an agile methodology called
Scrum to improve relationships between IT and business partners to ensure project success (O
Brien Marakas, 2011). IT used this tool to work collectively as a group and determine which
project will give Shaw Industries the best value. They divided the project into segments: 30 days to

IT must have something to show during its effort, and if they deliver, this will promote a positive
relationship.
A healthy organization is one that involves people who are loyal to one another, never judges,
expresses genuine appreciation across their organizational structure, assists others with critical tasks
and never places blame on someone (Williams, 2013). When businesses make and keep promises,
they see strong trust and respect across the organization. If they often make commitments but fail to
keep them, people will see frustration and self starving behavior (Williams, 2013). Shaw Industries
focused on consistency to build a trusting relationship with their client. They delivered priorities by
an explicit deadline and in turn, trust was earned. A customer s ability to trust is dependent upon
showing the customer that your behavior is consistent and persistent over time. When a customer
can predict your behavior, that customer is more likely to trust you (James, 2012).
While the agile system was the popular choice for Shaw Industries, this certainly does not mean it is
the best choice for every organization. There are hundreds of Requirements and Issue Management
software available. SpiraTest, RequirementsHub, DevSpec, Gatherspace and Bugzilla are just a few
that are popular today (Top Requirements Management Software Products, 2015). Each has their
own set of tools and configurations to assist project managers. An effective issue management

  • 2. Themes Of Xenophobia In District 9 Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth, not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi National United, which is not concerned with the aliens welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent Wikus contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9. The film was directed by Neill Blomkamp and starred Sharlto Copley (Wikus). It begins as a documentary style investigation and then as the film continues it becomes more conventional and character driven following Wikus and his transformation into a Prawn. The film focuses... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie, there are signs saying either no prawns or no humans and the humans show a major sign of xenophobia towards the prawns. In this day in age we see a lot of hatred towards foreigners, in particular, terrorists. In the beginning of the movie you see Blomkamp interviewing the humans about the prawns. They show a great level of hatred and disgust for the prawns intruding on their town. In the real world, we see this same form of hatred or disgust from certain people about the immigrants and refugees intruding on and taking over many American s jobs. Blomkamp wants to push the issue that there is great hatred throughout the world today. The main reason he produced the film in Johannesburg was because there were high tensions between native south Africans and Zimbabwean refugees. He wanted to try to make the town he grew up in great again. Blomkamp wanted to open people s eyes with the use of science fiction to show that in some ways we treat other humans like the humans treated the prawns. Differential Criticism studies works by and about oppressed groups, including ethnicities, women and homosexuals. The focus is particularly on how oppressed people and their artistic or intellectual productions have been marginalized, stifled, or demonized, and how preoccupations with difference (framing them as the Other ) have shaped the portrayal of these groups (Fourteen Critical Approaches for Work in the Humanities). They established that rapists and pedophiles are substantially not as sensitive to the perception of emotions displayed by others, when compared to domestic abuse offenders. In the study conducted by Puglia, Stough, Carter, and Joseph (2005), they chose 19 imprisoned sex offenders, who were chosen from Her Majesty s Prison and Ararat, 18 detained non sex offending prisoners from HM Prison Ararat and Her Majesty s Prison Langi Kal Ka, and 19 control participants without criminal history and who were not connected to any crime. The participants were asked to do three subtests from the MSCEIT, which consisted of 35 items. The first subtest is the perception branch, in which the subjects were to express, on a five point scale, the emotion that is being presented in different photographs such as faces, landscapes, or an abstract design. The second subtest is the assimilation branch. In this subtest, the participants were asked to associate words to a given emotion and indicate the similarities of the word and the emotions; An example is, cold, blue, sweet. The last subtest is the management branch. In this subtest, the subjects were asked to indicate the effectiveness of an action would be in managing their internal emotions. With this method, it is revealed that the results of the sex offenders are not that significantly different in comparison to the control group. As a way of contrast, these findings did not yield the same conclusion that Hudson et al., (1993) suggested. The results from the MSCEIT assessment did not display the deficit of emotional function of sexual offenders. Furthermore, this study helps support the suggestion that the emotional deficiency the sexual offenders have are more likely to be specific to the sexual offences they have committed (Fernandez et al., ... • 6. Argumentative Essay On Prejudice And Prejudice Social conformity can be toxic, it often leads to the epidemic that is prejudice. To give a better idea of what prejudice means, Judice translates to judge in Latin, therefore the term prejudice literally translates into pre judgment . There are innumerable forms of negative preconceived notions that exist in our world today, the biggest one being racism, which often is a stem of having anti immigration views. Immigration prejudiceis not unknown to any person who lives in America and has eyes and ears to know it exists, but it s important to know that prejudice is not innate, it is learned, and as long as we allow our society to practice xenophobia among present and future generations we will never be free of it. According to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prejudice doesn t discriminate, it lives in all runs of people: Whites, African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Republicans, Democrats, men, women, young, old you name it. In a perfect world this level of hatred wouldn t be the norm, but it is. It is so widespread that there s tangible evidence that shows even Hispanics (immigrant or not) have negative affiliations with immigrants. How can this be when Hispanics take the cake for making up the largest portion of new comers. Interestingly enough, research done by the Pew Research Center concludes that the more Hispanics have become accustomed to nativism in American culture, the more likely they are to feel negatively toward the matter. This sense of superiority is quite frankly sickening, to know that even counterparts of immigrants could fall suspect of discrimination goes to show its daunting power. What s more, the false notion that immigrants are purely responsible for the uprooting of crime, scarce resources, drugs, disease, and more have been fed to natives by the media and those in powerful positions to continue defacing the image of immigration as there s no solid evidence to justify being anti foreign. As the descendant of an immigrant father and his father before him, I ve witnessed firsthand the means and consequences of trying to enter this country and become a citizen. The ... I travelled across the Spanish province of La Mancha with my loyal squire, Sancho Panza, in search of adventures, beautiful ladies, and princesses to whom I can offer my knightly services. I was a bold and valiant knight. My greatest and most memorable adventure, perhaps, is my encounter with the giants of the plains of La Mancha who had thousand of arms. The battle which ensued was so glorious that whoever hears of it strangely accuses me of being a madman. However, after my forced retirement from being a knight errant, I fell ill and during my last hour I realized that all my adventures were indeed hallucinations and my greatest adventure was simply a comical duel between I and windmills. Yet I believe that the most beautiful thing about reading is that it develops and sharpens our imagination. It is because of this sole fact that I chose to devote my life to reading. When we read books, especially novels; the plot, characters, and settings, are all visualized within our heads. You may not realize it but as you read more books, and the more you use your imagination, the more precise and powerful your critical thinking skills become which gives you edge in the competitive ... The Antamina mine, was the underlying asset of this bidding process which included 40 bidders; though that number was steadily dwindling, and by June of 1996 was down to only a handful serious contenders. Within the copper mining industry, there were three dominant players, RTZ CRA, Noranda, and a joint venture of Inmet Mining and Rio Algom. These three were believed to be the primary bidders. All three had ancillary mineral mining practices aside from copper, as well as other areas of business. RTZ CRA was the largest of these three, and was believed to be the best positioned to prevail on the bidding. The other bidders were smaller in capital but had the same level of mining experience. The joint venture of Rio Algom and Inmet had only $1.5 billion combined market capitalization, but Inmet had a healthier capital structure and less financial risk which created a lower cost of capital. The bidding rules reduced the sensitivity of capital and created comparative advantages for smaller players. For RTZ CRA to execute on their bid and acquire Antamina at a strategically economic price, they would have to have made the decision of whether this property would provide long term economic and strategic value. I heard about this internship from my Math professor, Dr. Julie Clark. I am an international student from Nepal. I intend to major in Mathematics Statistics, and Environmental Science at Hollins University. I have a comprehensive background in Mathematics and Science, my emphasis is researchand data collection. I enjoy this concentration because I find great satisfaction being part of the problem solving process. Through a previous internship in Nepal with Trail Bridge Support Units (TBSU), I was able to work in rural villages and connect with villagers. Our goal was to construct sustainable trail bridges that would connect two communities. I assisted with data collection; surveying local people to pinpoint their needs. Since I spoke with villagers directly, I was able to find the middle ground between former data and people s needs making progress in TBSU s goal to carry out bridge construction. Unlike the other case studies, I do not think that there was as much external disaster planning with the Columbia. In my research it seems that NASA as long been an advocate for the traditional approach to disaster management. Taking in to account the secret classification that surrounds much of what happens, and the inner workings of a government organization such as NASA, we should not be surprised of their approach to disasters. Another research group identifies these failures in its findings Behind the direct cause of the foam strike, the report leveled damning critiques at NASA s pre and post launch decision making, painting a picture of an agency dominated by milestone obsessed middle management. That focus on narrow, group specific work and reporting, without a complementary focus on cross department integration and communication, contributed at least as much to the loss of the shuttle as did the foam impact (The Audacious Rescue Plan that Might have Saved Space Shuttle Columbia, 2014). I m of the mindset that, had these shortfalls not been exposed and attributed to the loss of the shuttle, there was little that could have been done to save the shuttle once the foam strike took place. The time to correct that discrepancy should have been prior to flight, and according to many articles I read, the detaching foam was a known issue; which places the blame back to an organization that had problems adapting to any changes regarding safety. As with any emergency disaster, not all aspects were failures. Once such noted example from our handouts (Learning Lesson 7), was emergence. Both terms are used to create central themes for the four stories we read in our english class. All of these stories include characters that present greed or charity. In The Gift of the Magi, the wife and the husband both gave up their prized possessions to get their significant other a gift. Since the couple were poor and wanted to satisfy each other with a wonderful gift, they had to give up what they never thought they would have before. I believe this shows charity in their relationship. They both wanted the best of the best for each other and kindheartedly gave up whatever they had. Della, the wife, asked someone to buy her long, silky, brown hair. Will you buy my hair? asked Della. I buy hair, said Madame. Take yer hat off and let s have a sight at the looks of it. As you can see, the wife sold her hair to buy her husband a gift which was a watch band for his watch. The husband then revealed to his wife that he sold his watch to buy her a comb. In The Fisherman and His Wife, both greed and charity are presented. The fisherman consisted of a lot of charity. He was willing to give his wife whatever she wanted. The Mormon religion is tied to millennialism, or the belief that Jesus Christ will someday return to Earth and rule in righteousness for 1000 years only after there have been many catastrophes and much suffering. This belief served a purpose for Joseph Smith, it solidified him as a prophet, meaning as long as his followers would heed his words, also known as the revelations he received directly from God , they would be saved. Joseph Smith set up a system called the United Order to serve this purpose, and it worked well. The poor were able to get the provisions they needed for their family, while at the same time, the rich felt like they were admired for their sacrifices.# By the end of 1830, 9 months after it had been established, the Mormon church had a congregation of ... The lion s body is very muscular, with less bone mass than other animals of comparable size. This allows the lion to make powerful blows with its forepaws heavy enough to break a zebra s back. Each paw has soft pads to make its movements quiet enough to sneak up on prey. Lions walk on their toes which means they are digitigrade walkers. The claws on the paw grow as a series of layers. Nicotine has a powerful addicting effect because it is absorbed rapidly into the pulmonary circulation following inhalation from which it passes through the left side of the heart and into the cerebral circulation. It rapidly crosses the blood brain barrier and binds to specific receptors in various parts of the brain. Stimulation of receptors by nicotine results in the activation of a number of neurohumoral pathways leading to release of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, vasopressin and various hormones. Nicotine causes the release of the substance b endorphin, an endogenous peptide that also binds to opiate receptors. This indicates a link between addiction to opiates, such as morphine and heroin, and addiction to nicotine. Nicotine affects nearly all components of the endocrine and neuroendocrine systems, including catecholamines, serotonin, corticosteroids and pituitary hormones. Some of these endocrine effects are mediated by actions of nicotine on brain neurotransmitter systems. In addition, nicotine causes skeletal muscle relaxation and has cardiovascular effects. The Introspection And Behaviorism Movements The introspection and behaviorism movements in psychology both had certain flaws and limitations that did not allow them to examine underlying cognitive processes. However, their flaws in studying psychology were on opposite sides of the same coin. The reconciliation of these two flawed fields, along with some other methods, led to the cognitive revolution and the eventual emergence of cognitive psychology(Cognition, p. 13) First, the introspection movement, led by Wundt and Titchener, sought to study the mind by having each individual introspect and record their own thoughts and experiences (Cognition, p. 9). Therefore, the field of behaviorism, which produced credible, reproducible data, but completely ignored the subject s underlying motivations for behavior, was flawed in an opposite way from introspection. The cognitive revolution provided a way to create a field that would combine the best parts of introspection and behaviorism, without either of their fatal flaws. The transcendental method, developed by Immanuel Kant in the 1700s, proposed beginning with observable phenomena and working backward to investigate why those processes may be occurring (Cognition, p. 13). By adopting this method of taking objective, observable behaviors, and working backward to provide possible explanations for these behaviors, cognitive psychology was able to come into its own as a science. If that goal is unattainable a practical goal is stabilizing the safety of the patient and others as well as substantially improving the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms. To achieve these treatment goals studies have shown the best treatment is a combination of medication and psychotherapy (Alpert Spillmann, 1997). The use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Fluoxetine has shown moderate to large improvement in the reduction of impulsive aggressive behavior. The goal of the Fluoxetine is to balance out the altered serotonin levels that are commonly altered in individuals with IED (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). In addition to medication cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to reduce impulsive aggression, anger, and hostile automatic thoughts. The therapies used include relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and coping skills training. The rates of full remission from IED were 29% with fluoxetine alone and 33% from cognitive behavioral therapy alone. When combined the treatments are more effective for sustained remission because they work through different mechanisms (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). The search for authenticity, as said, goes as much against the demands for a prescribed social life as it does for the recognition of one s real self. Relationship Between The Old And New Testament Relationship between the Old and New Testament The relationship of the Old Testament and the New Testament has been the cause for a series of debates for many generations. In some cases, the Bible is believed to be just a random assortment of individual scrolls brought together in no precise fashion and for no particular reason, with the Old and New Testament being completely separated from one another, this is of course false. The Bible is, as a whole, the given Word of God brought together by a variety of human authors under the Divine Inspiration of the One True Divine Author, God Himself. Similarly, the Old Testament should not be neglected and replaced by the New Testament, as the New Testament is deeply rooted within the Old Testament and the Old Testament is brought into full manifestation, through Jesus Christ, within the New Testament. Therefore, the New Testament cannot exist without the Old Testament and the Old Testament cannot become fulfilled without the New Testament. Throughout the world, in many different religions, the Bible is used as a guide for life during our time on earth, however, some have taken it upon themselves to edit the Word of God and remove parts of scripture that they believe to be false or irrelevant. The Maintenance Of International Peace And Security General James Jones, former head of EUCOM says that We are attempting to avoid Africa from becoming the next Afghanistan or Iraq, (Paterson, 2008, p. 15). The maintenance of international peace and security are the main responsibilities of the UN. The UN Security Council plays a critical role in peacekeeping. Many peacekeepingoperations have been operating all around the world since the UN was established. However, most of the peacekeeping operations have been taking place on the African continent more than other continents. It is clear that some of the UN missions have received many restrictions from the host country authorities. Before the mission starts, the responsibility of the country s leaders is to make the special agreement with the UN. The agreement is signed between the UN and the leaders of the government. Based on the agreement, the host nation s leaders must support the UN peacekeeping operations in order to establish a safe working environment. The peacekeepers are supposed to achieve all tasks without any constraints from the host country authorities. Nevertheless, in some cases, this agreement is violated by political leaders of the country. For instance, in the Darfur crisis, Al Bashir, who is the president of Sudan, played to local fear. He said that the UN forces did not really provide peace in Darfur because they wish to recolonize Sudan and the UN military has a secret agenda (Paterson, 2008, p. 18). Additionally, in 2004, the African Union (AU) peacekeepers begun to arrive in Darfur. • 34. Examples Of Dysfunctional Relationships Dysfunctional People in Relationships Have you ever wondered why some people stay in a dysfunctional relationship? Dysfunctional relationships are relationships that do not perform their appropriate function. In The Yellow Wallpaper, The narrator is a doctor who although probably filled with good intentions, comes off seeming domineering. The narrator and her husband move into a manor for the summer to help her with her temporary nervous depression a slight hysterical tendency. Female patients were not to listened to by male patients, but because back then women were not in positions of power. The two main reasons why their relationship is dysfunctional is the way John treats the narrator and the fact that she has postpartum depression so she is not herself. The medical world has changed a lot since back then. For instance, there were no female doctors at that time. In the 1800 s, much was unknown in the terms of health. The mortality rate was high and life expectancy was low. Parents, rich or poor, had no way of combating the deadly diseases and infections that often took their children s lives. Deadly outbreaks of cholera ( an infection in the small intestine) to the flu were, understandably, a leading cause of death in children at the time. After all, children s immune systems are not fully developed and are therefore weaker in the terms of fighting off these fatal diseases. Medicine has advanced dramatically from the 1800 s to the present.Today, although not all children are healthy if any, foods available to them, the overall diet of children has improved. Also, with what is known about diseases and transmission, many deadly diseases are under control. Luckily, today it is much more common for people also have regular checkups with the doctor, from the time they are in the womb through adulthood. One reason why John and the narrator s relationship is dysfunctional is that John treats the narrator like a child. The relationship between the narrator and John is not overly loving, but unlike many people, I do not believe that John was intentionally trying to hurt her. John cares about his wife, he just refuses to admit that his own prescribed treatment may, in fact, be the wrong treatment. John ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Political Parties And The Republican Party Platform Generally speaking, anyone who lives in the United States of America knows that there are two main political parties the Republicans and the Democrats. Having two main parties has its advantages and, of course, its disadvantages. For example, in By the People James E. Monroe and Rogan Kersh (301) point out having this type of system creates predictability and stability. However, they also declare (301) it can lead to a gridlock. This is not a new concept either as there has been a divide since the beginning of both parties. The two parties more often than not disagree on various issues, while rarely agreeing on what is best for the country. Democrats and Republicans highly differ when comparing views on climate change. The Democrats accept human role in climate change while many Republicans question if climate change is even real. In the 2016 Democratic Party Platform (27), they state in the first 100 days of the next administration, the president will convene a summit of the words best engineers, climate scientists, policy experts, activists, and indigenous communities to chart a course to solve the climate crisis. In his article, Swine Flu Vaccine: What Is Fair?, Gostin points out that rich countries in general will probably use their vastly superior spending power to acquire vaccines. Stockpiling by the rich, of course, leaves poor countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America much more vulnerable (11). After all, everyone needs to be protected from the dangers of H1N1 Influenza throughout the world and income should not play a role in who is vaccinated. It is a reality that every individual is just as important as the next and should have a fair chance at a vaccination. Organizations are creating the vaccines with the idea of profit in mind and this is not fair to the poorer countries around the globe. Wealthy countries are definitely more likely to acquire vaccinations in relation to poorer ones. Second, it is advisable that everyone should get vaccinated against H1N1 Influenza because it can prevent the Swine Flu from spreading any further. If the entire world s population was vaccinated against the Swine Flu, this would result in the complete control of the virus. We need to stop H1N1 Influenza in its tracks and protect all citizens from the flu regardless of their income or social class. For instance, women became active in expressing their views against alcohol and pushed for the prohibition and temperance. Organizations such as The Women s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), argued that alcohol led to societal problems. Male and female reformers banned together to argue that alcohol was immoral and causing a negative impact on women. Women, if married, would experience an abusive, violent drunk husband who neglected his family and gambled his money away. Thus, the evils of alcohol became part of the progressive agenda that eventually led to the passage of the 18th amendment. Along with prohibition, women also took active roles in acquiring suffrage. In The Politics of Good Government, Gayle Gullett argued that in the California Women s Movement built a nonpartisan broad suffrage umbrella that sought to enhance their special interests. Middle class women assured their male allies that women s enfranchisement was essential to progressivism. Feminist retellings of old tales try to turn misogynistic messages around. The article, Feminist Frauds on the Fairies? A healthy organization is one that involves people who are loyal to one another, never judges, expresses genuine appreciation across their organizational structure, assists others with critical tasks and never places blame on someone (Williams, 2013). When businesses make and keep promises, they see strong trust and respect across the organization. If they often make commitments but fail to keep them, people will see frustration and self starving behavior (Williams, 2013). There are hundreds of Requirements and Issue Management software available. SpiraTest, RequirementsHub, DevSpec, Gatherspace and Bugzilla are just a few that are popular today (Top Requirements Management Software Products, 2015).
