Filter bubble and information behaviour, ISIC 2018, keynote speechSabina Cisek
The document discusses the concept of filter bubbles and their potential relevance for information behavior research. It defines filter bubbles as the intellectual isolation that can occur when websites selectively present information to users based on their past behavior and location. This personalization may limit exposure to opposing viewpoints. However, some research has questioned whether strong filter bubbles actually exist or whether personalization has significant negative effects. The document also explores filter bubbles from psychological, socio-cultural, and epistemological perspectives and provides some suggestions for how to mitigate the effects of filter bubbles, such as developing critical thinking skills and using different search tools and engines.

Stratosphere - Learning in a Connected World is a summary of Fullan's book, Stratosphere and the requirement to link pedagogy, technology and change knowledge if the goal is to have system transformation for learning and teaching in the 21st Century.
The document discusses how technology can be used to develop literacy skills in children who are more knowledgeable about technology than adults. It covers four main themes: (1) addressing the "teleological divide" between where literacy is heading digitally and where education systems currently stand; (2) increasing student motivation and engagement through choice, feedback, and participation; (3) teaching critical internet literacy skills; and (4) how Web 2.0 technologies can transform teaching by making it easier for teachers and empowering students as producers, not just consumers, of content.
2011 waiau pa-tod-vowel of confusion-aDavid Kinane
This document discusses the potential for e-learning and changing education paradigms to better engage digital learners. It notes that New Zealand already has high internet usage and digital connectivity. Research suggests digital learners prefer receiving information quickly from multiple sources, in a visual, multimedia format that allows for parallel processing and networking with others. However, current education models tend to rely on slower, independent work styles. The document argues for rethinking pedagogy and creating self-organizing learning environments that engage students through creative, authentic learning experiences.
Bells, Whistles and Digital Tools for the 21st Century CatechistCaroline Cerveny
So you know you should be using Digital tools in your ministry! Yet, we find so many excuses to stay in our comfortable world. What steps do I take as a catechist to get on board with what the Pope has referred to as the Digital Continent? In this ever evolving collaborative and digital communications world, how do I stay abreast with what is happening all around me? With a limited budget, how do I stretch it to include technology? Where do I start? How do I share my success stories? Is Digital Discipleship and Digital Citizenship important today?

- 3 billion people currently use the internet, with internet and mobile technology usage expanding rapidly due to new technologies like wearable devices, virtual and augmented reality, big data, and the Internet of Things.
- Educators are increasingly embracing technological innovation in the classroom to enhance learning, engage students, make education more global, and connect students to new ideas and resources.
- Social media, mobile apps, makerspaces, ebooks, and online courses give teachers new tools to empower and personalize learning for students.
Modern learners are demanding, resourceful, tech savvy, and crave recognition. They choose what information to retain and prioritize experiences over formal learning. Technology enables on-demand and mobile learning that is easy to access. Learning management systems and tools like the Tin Can API/xAPI allow learning to be tracked across systems and devices. While technology should not distract from learning, it offers opportunities for gamification, microlearning and creating engaging content to satisfy modern learners who are time poor.
This document discusses the growth of information and web technologies. It notes that the amount of information created annually now exceeds what is in the Library of Congress, and that by 2020 a pocket-sized device will be able to hold all content ever created. The document also highlights statistics on internet and technology use among different age groups and regions. It concludes by encouraging the reader to start using new technologies like blogs and wikis to learn.
