The digestive system begins with ingestion and involves digestion, absorption, and egestion. Digestion is the breakdown of food into smaller molecules by enzymes. The digestive system includes the alimentary canal (digestive tract) and digestive glands. The alimentary canal runs from the mouth to the anus and includes structures like the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Digestive glands like the salivary glands, liver, and pancreas secrete enzymes and bile to further break down food. Nutrients are then absorbed in the small intestine and unabsorbed waste is egested from the anus.
