Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing.

December 2017 presentation covering: What is design thinking? What does it look like in practice? What are some case stories of design thinking being used in the real world? How can we use design thinking in our organization? Where can I learn more?
This is a short talk and workshop (30' + 90') to give a first introduction to design thinking. Gives theory foundation, notes a few different approaches, and then dives into one of them.
This presentation was first done at ImpactON / StartupChile evening in 2015.
Developed by students at Stanford University, the Design Thinking approach was created to establish a new way to grow innovative products, processes and services. The Design Thinking process consists of six iterative stages which enable participants to seek flexible solutions and innovations concerning the issue they treat.
One important aspect of Design Thinking is the creation and cultivation of ideas within a well-coordinated team. Thus, the team spirit is a decisive element during Design Thinking operations and encourages to produce the best possible results. In addition to the team side of Design Thinking, a flexible and productive environment is crucial to develop inventive ideas and products. The more workable an environment, is the easier it is for employees to visualize and transmit thoughts and new concepts.
Design Thinking : Prototyping & TestingSankarshan D
The design team will now produce a number of inexpensive, scaled down versions of the product or specific features found within the product, so they can investigate the problem solutions generated in the previous stage. Prototypes may be shared and tested within the team itself, in other departments, or on a small group of people outside the design team.

Design Thinking For Educational Technology Stefanie Panke
Design thinking is a problem solving method geared to overcome wicked problems, that have no right or wrong solution and resist traditional scientific and engineering approaches. During the design thinking process, the facilitator encourages participants to see constraints as inspiration. The results are typically not directed toward a technological “quick fix” but toward new integration of signs, things, actions, and environments. Developing university websites and stewarding educational technology projects is one such challenge that can benefit greatly from applying design thinking principles and processes.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
What is design thinking?
Most of us are digital Immigrants as opposed to digital natives. To be successful, digital natives will need 4Cs: Critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

The Post-It note may be the symbol of design thinking!
Design thinking is a process and does not refer to the elements and principles of design.
He presents six aptitudes he considers necessary for success in the 21st century.
One of our most popular issues was Story.
As opposed to someone else!
The d.school at Stanford in California offers a degree in design thinking. The d.school's first major venture in the world of K-12 education is at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, CA. Called the Innovation Lab, the project is a 3500 square foot space where students in the K-8 school will develop their design thinking skills.
Eight of these are available as a free app for iPhone and iTouch. You can buy the whole set for $4.99. IDEO Method Cards is a collection of 51 cards representing diverse ways that design teams can understand the people they are designing for. They are used to make a number of different methods accessible to all members of a design team, to explain how and when the methods are best used, and to demonstrate how they have been applied to real design projects. Inspired by playing cards, the cards are classified as four suits—Ask, Watch, Learn, Try—that define the types of activities involved in using each method.
In October 2008, SchoolArts published our first issue on design thinking, guest edited by Marty Rayala and Paul Sproll. They suggested that four areas of design should be addressed.

Jonathan Ive, born in 1967, designer of the original iMac, the iPod, and the iPhone, and now head of Apple's industrial design facility, has been named the most influential person in British culture. Fast Company, a communications magazine, just chose him as the number 1 person in their list of the 100 most creative people.
Daniel Pink often uses this as an example in his talks. The quote is taken from an ad, the copy of which is quite engaging. Daniel Pink uses this flyswatter in his presentations.
There is a huge market in Japan in toy (called vinyl) design for young adults.
Zolo toys was started by two designers, Byron Glaser and Sandra Higashi, who started a design firm, Higashi Glaser Design, after graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1987. Zolo toys were invented as a new free-form, gender-neutral construction niche in the toy market. “It is our goal to create imagery and products that are genuine in spirit, bold in attitude, becoming to the eye, and meaningful in truth.”
Brian Donnelly (born 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey), professionally known as KAWS, is a New York-based artist and designer of limited edition toys and clothing.
He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He got his start as a graffiti artist.
Automotive design is a complicated discipline. Although primarily concerned with the appearance of a vehicle, it is governed by various factors including security, safety and engineering - all of which have their own set of specialists. This means that as well as designing to very high standards, automotive designers must have excellent teamworking and communication skills, say Chris Clements and... With oil prices at $135 dollars per barrel, the pressure is on for car makers to innovate and create more fuel efficient vehicles. Volkswagen seems to be taking this task seriously with the 1L, a prototype that is capable of traveling for 235mpg using 1 gallon of gasoline, or 100km on 1L of gas. Adding to the excitement of this breakthrough is recent news that VW plans to get this concept out to market in 2010!
Animation for movies and games just continues to get better.
Video game design is a growing field.
The quality of a website design often determines its popularity. All my student teachers come with the ability to do website design.
The gardens at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, designed by artist Robert Irwin. "Always changing, never twice the same," is carved into the plaza floor, reminding visitors of the ever-changing nature of this living work of art.
As a subject, building design is more popular than ever, but there’s a lot more to it than striking new statement architecture. Miriam Fitzpatrick investigates the discipline today and explains how setting higher standards in all aspects of the design and build process can be good for business, the environment and our health.
