Editor's Notes

  • #3 This lesson was published in SchoolArts Magazine as well as in the textbooks.
  • #4 The lesson is a studio exploration in Davis Publication’s elementary curriculum, Explorations in Art, second grade. Show and discuss examples of architecture that use geometric forms.
  • #5 Guide students through these steps to help them make a successful cube. Use paper clips to hold the pieces together so students can continue construction.
  • #6 Share images of geometric building.
  • #7 Examples from my second graders. The one on the left has a garden. The one on the right has a swing. Different kinds of paper, paper straws, fancy scissors and crimpers inspire creativity.
  • #8 The image on the left is a house boat. The one on the right is a birdhouse. Both second grade.
  • #9 The house on the left is another view of the houseboat. The house on the right has a trampoline and a putting green. All second grade.
  • #11 Precut the papers on the paper cutter. These are 2” x 4” but you could change the scale up or down. Card stock works best, but you could also use high quality construction paper or tagboard. Display this slide so students can refer to it as they work. If they use paper clips to hold the parts together as they glue, the process will be much faster. Even though my examples from second grade, this is easily adaptable for any grade level.
  • #12 Using paper clips to hold the pieces of paper together promotes success and speed in assembly. Each cube requires 12 pieces of paper.
  • #13 Stages of production
  • #14 Students can work collaboratively to combine their cubes. You can choose the colors they use or let them decide.
