Recent psychology research is showing that experiential metaphors are key emotional drivers that impact our perception of the world. Applying these findings to design confirms what designers have learned throughout their careers—good design is subconscious first and rational second. Michael will share stories from this research and the IDEO portfolio then share tools to help you be more consciously subconscious.
Developed by students at Stanford University, the Design Thinking approach was created to establish a new way to grow innovative products, processes and services. The Design Thinking process consists of six iterative stages which enable participants to seek flexible solutions and innovations concerning the issue they treat.
One important aspect of Design Thinking is the creation and cultivation of ideas within a well-coordinated team. Thus, the team spirit is a decisive element during Design Thinking operations and encourages to produce the best possible results. In addition to the team side of Design Thinking, a flexible and productive environment is crucial to develop inventive ideas and products. This is part 4 of a 5 part series of presentations on the Strategic Inflection Point of 2017 in the Semiconductor, High Tech and Electronics industries, when Samsung took the top spot in the Semiconductor domain from Intel, it was a surprise to all, even though the indicators started to show in late 2016 that Samsung might take the top slot. It is also an illustrative example of what a Minimum Winning Game is. There are 2 geographical located super user groups that use and apply TRIZ/Systematic Innovation methods, in the industrial, corporate domain, they are located in South Korea and Japan. Case study examples of those applications are illustrated here. I close the presentation with the description of what a Black Swan is and that these two groups, do strongly follow the rules of what it means to be a Black Swan, an Outlier, and will have a significant effect upon those and other industries as a result. This is a rough draft of that chapter, the final version going into the published work will of course be more published, please consider this if providing any constructive feedback.

[This is an updated version of an earlier presentation with some of the images, but none of the content, removed] Corporate Research and Development is evolving, and it increasingly incorporates user experience design, design research, and service design into the earliest stages. The historical separation between basic research, applied research and productization erodes as research horizons shorten, technology diffuses more rapidly, and companies want to take bigger risks sooner. When this changing market is coupled with rapidly changing technology that blurs the boundaries between hardware, software, materials and processes, the role of design fundamentally changes. Design influences technology research earlier in the creation of a novel technology, whether it’s a new application of artificial intelligence, or a new material. In this PARC Forum, Mike Kuniavsky and other members of PARC’s Innovation Services Group will present how they participate in early-stage research and development, and discuss the methods they developed when working alongside PARC’s researchers in developing printed sensors, AI-enabled IoT services, and deep learning computer vision products. We will show how we systematically explore the impact of technologies before they exist and how we try to look beyond hype and our own excitement to see how a new technology can actually solve business and human problems.

Whether literarily or metaphorically, there is no aspect of product design that is not reflected in motorcycles. Motorcycles are metal, rubber, plastic and fuel. They are shape, color, brand and performance. Motorcycles are all of these—and much more. They are intimate experiences for riders and their communities. They are experiences where the rider and the bicycle become one during the ride. They are experiences that begin on the road and continue after the rider is off the road. In this presentation, we will explore the design principles that make motorcycles the intense experiences they are. We will look at the relationships riders form with their motorcycles, how they interact with them, and how experience design is manifested in the form of motorcycles revealing what lessons can be learned about the design of other products.

It is hard to think about a more intimate experience between a user and a product than the experience of riding a motorcycle, and Shimon can speak about it empathically and passionately both as a motorcyclist and as a product development expert.
