The Deer Hunter Analysis
The Deer Hunter is a Vietnam war film directed by Michael Cimino released in 1978. It tracks
the lives of lifelong friends in a small town before and after three of them go to Vietnam. The
main male characters that go to Vietnam are Michael, Nick, and Steven. The beginning of the film
shows the kind of friendship they have with one another before becoming a soldier using up about
an hour of screentime. The middle of the film shows what they went through during the war, the
last part of the film was used to show how they were affected in their lives. What most likely
influenced the film like the many other war filmsat the time was the relatively recent end of the
Vietnam war.
The setting of the film was realistic never did I think while watching that this was something that
wouldn t have happened. The atmosphere suggested that Pennsylvania was a quiet place free
from trouble, while Vietnam was a place full of mayhem and temptations. There was one very
blatant symbol used to foreshadow the events to come. The cups that Steven and his wife drank
out of that if not a single drop was spilled would be good luck for the rest of their lives.
The camera work of the film was executed well. The close ups helped to build the tension during the
Russian roulette scenes. There were very scenic wide shots of the mountains during hunting scenes
that helped contrast the intense scenes of the movie by making those scenes more intense when we

Howard Hughes was a successful Hollywood movie producer when he founded the Hughes
Aircraft Company in 1932. He personally tested cutting edge aircraft of his own design and in
1937 broke the transcontinental flight time record. In 1938, he flew around the world in a
record three days, 19 hours, and 14 minutes. Following the U.S. entrance into World War II in
1941, the U.S. government commissioned the Hughes Aircraft Company to build a large flying
boat capable of carrying men and materials over long distances. Because of wartime restrictions
on steel, Hughes decided to build his aircraft out of wood laminated with plastic and covered
with fabric, and they had a wingspan of 320 feet and was powered by eight giant propeller
engines. Development of the Spruce Goose cost a phenomenal $23 million and took so long that
the war had ended by the time of its completion in 1946. The aircraft had many detractors, and
Congress demanded that Hughes prove the plane airworthy. On November 2, 1947, Hughes
obliged, taking the prototype out into Long Beach Harbor, CA for an unannounced flight test.
