Gerrymandering Pros And Cons
Gerrymandering is the process of altering electoral districts to favor a political party over the other by
receiving more votes in that districts based on the population demographics and party affiliation.
Gerrymandering was founded when Governor Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts had enacted a bill that
would allow the state to the redistricted in a way that would favor the party he represented, which was
the Democratic Republican Party, over the Federalists. When the redistricting plan was brought to the
press, the term was created using Governor Gerry s name and salamander after one district in Boston
appeared to look like a salamander. In terms of recent elections, the United States has not gone
through a redistricting process since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The redistribution of districts definitely helped voters that felt underrepresented especially those in
rurals and cities but this still presents problems with small pockets of voters that are either undecided
or strongly in favor of one party over their districts affiliation. The new NY District 23 is a perfect
example of this. District 23 is lead by Congressman Tom Reed, a Republican representing a very rural
area of Southern Tier New York. The cities of Corning, Ithaca, Olean, Jamestown, and Dunkirk are
scattered throughout the district with dozens of public and private universities also present. The
district population is mostly isolated in the cities with sparse populations elsewhere. A majority of the
population would be young, due to the universities, and mostly urban, because of the cities, so you
expect the district to be blue, wrong. District 23 is in fact red, because of the lack of mobilization of
young voters to go out and vote. Because of this, older more rural voters decide the party affiliation of
the district resulting in representation by Reed. Some argue that Tom Reed s district is gerrymandered
in his favor which resulted in his reelection this past November. Although he was reelected, there was
still a presence of more younger voters making an effort to go out and vote. John Plumb, Reed s
Democratic opponent, had great outreach in the Chautauqua

Mediterranean Basin Polytheism
The Mediterranean Basin experienced many political and cultural changes from the 8th century BC to
the 5th century CE. First, religious views in the Roman Empire that spread throughout the
Mediterranean changed from polytheism to monotheism over time because people were unsatisfied
with the lack of spiritual passion in their current beliefs. Second, political structures and forms of
government changed from independent city states and republics to empires due to expanding political
entities, trade, and colonization. Lastly, architecture and art continued to improve society by
promoting political organization and public welfare.

Greece had many city states with acropolises, agoras, and temples. Greek architects constructed
acropolises on fortified hilltops for citizens to discuss government business. The agora was
strategically designed to be in the center of a city state as a marketplace for the general public to shop
and gather. Many Greek city states built temples and monuments to honor their patron deity and serve
as religious structures. The most famous of those temples was the Parthenon in Athens, which was
considered a massive architectural feat at the time. Approximately one century after the Parthenon was
constructed, Alexander the Great began to spread Hellenistic art. Two major statues of Hellenistic art
were the Colossus of Rhodes and Nike of Samothrace. The sculptures honored the two gods and
commemorated war victories. Similar to Greece, Ancient Rome s architects designed structures
benefiting the general public, political religion, and religion. Many government buildings and the
Twelve Tables were located in the Forum, an intricately designed plaza in the center of Rome. The
Pantheon, constructed in 27 BC, honored all the Roman gods and displayed the brilliance of Roman
architects. Other structures to provide entertainment and promote public health were constructed from
Julius Caesar s rule to the end of the Roman Empire, 476 AD. Public baths, aqueducts, and roads were
created to promote a healthier and more efficient lifestyle for the people of the Roman Empire. The
Colosseum was a source of entertainment for many people and incorporated advanced technology,
such as arches and drainage systems. As the Roman Empire gradually declined, architecture was used
for defense purposes. Multiple defensive walls were built to protect Roman Empire from invaders.
One of the first walls built was Hadrian s wall (122 AD) and the last wall built was the Anastasian

Essay on Information Literacy and the Public Library
The American Association for School Libraries defines information literacy as the ability to use many
types of reference resources and literacies to find information. The different types of reference
resources and literacies include: digital, visual, textual, and technological literacies. The American
Association for School Libraries has four main learning standards. The first covers inquiry, thinking
critically, and gaining knowledge. The second standard includes drawing conclusions, making
informal decisions, applying knowledge to new situations, and creating new knowledge. The third
standard asks students to be able to share knowledge and participate ethically. It also requires them to
be productive as members of our democratic society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is evidence of a wide range of information literacy focused programs in public libraries
worldwide (Harding, p. 157). Indeed, libraries across the United States are finding ways to provide
their communities with the necessary information literacy programs. Harding (2008) points out that
these library programs are providing information literacy support , and they have the opportunity to
foster the lifelong learning of their communities (p. 157). The public library has great strengths when
it comes to providing information literacy programming. Public libraries have been considered the
place to go for continuing education for an extremely long time. Public libraries reach a large range of
people on a daily basis. Harding (2008) points out that the library has a wide diversity of clientele and
the potential to reach all sections of the community from children to older adults, and across minority
groups and educational and professional levels. (p. 159) For many children, a public library is their
first experience with learning in a group environment. Oftentimes, community members are loyal to
one library and this allows librarians to foster long lasting relationships with them. Harding (2008)
also suggests that public libraries have the opportunity to provide one on one instruction during client
librarian interactions such as reference interviews (p. 160).This one on one instruction is another way

Fences Analysis On Fences By August Wilson
Fences Analysis
In the play Fences by August Wilson the play s attitude toward women is biased, and if the play was
written by a female I think it would have a stronger feminine influence. Issues such as racism and
discrimination against blacks may be raised in the play that the author did not bring up, and the
women in the story somewhat do generally typify women in the 1950s. To support my interpretation,
the women in the play were homebodies, just worrying about the household because they felt like that
s what they were supposed to do and that s all that was expected of them and etc.
I think it s a perfect example of women in the 1950s because after the war, women still found
themselves in traditional roles but were slowly breaking out of them. When the men returned from the
war, many women wished to keep their jobs but instead became stay at home mothers who were
expected to care for the children as well as cook and clean. Many ads and TV shows portrayed the
perfect wife and mother that women in the 1950s were expected to be. Rose deals with Troy s
nonsense mostly because she feels she has too, and even after Troy cheated on her and had a baby by
another woman she took care of the baby. An example of this is when Rose said I told him if he was
not the marrying kind, then move out the way so the marrying kind could find me. This shows that
Troy is unloyal, and Rose was always subject to his wild ways. Especially when Rose insisted on
marrying him instead of

Essay On The Journey Of The Cliffss
Torin maneuvered the small skiff to the narrow white sand beach directly below the imposing cliff
which rose nine hundred and twenty two feet above the shore. These sea cliffs were some of the
highest on the British mainland. Duncan and Torin leaped out of the boat to pull it to shore. Duncan
extended his hand to Adaira to steady her as threw her leg over the high gunwale of the craft. This is a
beautiful secluded little beach, but I don t see any stairs to reach the top of cliffs. To anyone unfamiliar

Ability Grouping
Ability grouping is a widely spread practice used among many educators today. Between class
grouping is by far one of the most commonly used types of ability grouping. The goal of this grouping
is for each class to be made up of students who are homogeneous in standardized intelligence or
achievement test scores (Snowman, Biehler). In this type of grouping, the schools separate their
students into different classes or courses. Between class ability grouping is where students spend most
of the day in ability groups and use the same or similar curriculum substantially adjusted to their
ability levels (Ability Grouping 3). For example, in elementary schools, students from the same grade
levels may be grouped by ability for reading and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This being said, there are a number of disadvantages as well. One such example is the fact that the
regrouping plan takes a considerable amount of time for planning. Teachers have to be very
cooperative and must be in agreement with one another. Another disadvantage is that teachers and
students meet with one another less frequently. [ ] Many teachers are uncomfortable working with
children whom they see only once a day for an hour or so (Snowman, 2003, p.186).
Although a derivative of the regrouping method, the Joplin Plan is perhaps the most unique of the four
types of ability grouping due to its process of cross grade grouping. A variation of the regrouping
method, the Joplin Plan is also known as the simplest form of ability groups. This grouping plan
assigns students to heterogeneous classes for most of the day, but regroups them across grade levels
for reading instruction (Hollifield 2000). This is in effort to group students for reading instruction on
the basis of ability level, regardless of age or grade. An example of the Joplin plan would be to group
all third, fourth, and fifth graders whose grade equivalent scores in reading are 4.6. The same can (and
usually is) done for mathematics. According to Gary Hopkins of Education World Magazine, grouping
students as a class by ability for all subjects doesn t improve achievement , however, grouping

Why Is Pressure Ulcer Important
The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel defines pressure ulcer as localized injury to skin and/or
underlying tissue usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure, or pressure in combination
with shear. Pressure ulcers are caused by unrelieved pressure usually located over bony prominences
and are localized area of tissue injury. Agency of Healthcare Research Quality has an effective vision
regarding pressure ulcers: If you can t measure it, you can t improve it. To determine the severity of a
pressure ulcer, an assessment of the lack of skin integrity is categorized according to severity by
stages to reflect level of tissue injury or damage . Variations in the breakdown of skin are staged to
correspond to the level of wound severity and the extent of tissue involvement which can range from
mild reddening of skin to severe tissue damage to muscle and bones. Pressure ulcers can also result in
severe infection. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

tunneling. Stage III pressure ulcers are classified as an event that should never occur within acute or

Dialogue of Personal Identity and Immortality
In Perry s Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality there is a conversation between three
characters that lasted over a period of three nights. The way the dialogue of the conversation was set
up was that each night the topic of the argument will get more intense , tricky and complicated. The
argument against and for immortality between two characters, Gretchen and Sam, and the argument of
Personal Identity, is in a way inviting the reader or audience to the discussion to create their own
thoughts in this discussion. Gretchen doesn t find life after death as possible and challenges Sam to
prove her wrong. In Perry s Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality , Gretchen is dying and
used her last days engaging in a philosophical debate with Sam over immortality or life after death.
In this essay , I will present and compare both sides of the debating argument of immortality.
Gretchen Weirob was a philosophy teacher and Sam Miller is her friend. Gretchen decided to spend
her last days debating on whether life after death is possible and on personal identity. There were two
debatable topics involved in this philosophical argument between Sam and Gretchen. They were
immortality and personal identity.
On the First Night, Gretchen challenged Sam to prove to her that life after death is possible, not
probable or likely. According to Gretchen , she believes life after death is impossible based on the
bodily identity theory of Personal identity in which a person is

The SAFE Act is considered reactionary firearm legislation, essentially being rushed through to pass.
It was designed to prevent criminals and the dangerously ill from purchasing firearms through a
universal background check, and greatly affects mental health professionals. The SAFE Act did not
get consideration from any mental health professionals though, and did not ask for their input. The Act
required mental health professionals to report patients they believe are likely to engage in conduct that
would result in serious harm to self or others to county authorities. Even if the professional believes
the patient would benefit from treatment, and doesn t even know if they have access to firearms, they
must report them. The SAFE Act effectively

Why Is Technology Important In The Vietnam War
During the Vietnam War, a proxy war fought primarily between North Vietnam and South Vietnam
with the support of the US, the deployment of new technology is seen by some to have a pivotal
impact on the nature of warfare. The Vietnam War does however highlight how other factors may have
been equally influential as despite America s large preponderance in the sense of technology, weapons
and ultimately economic wealth it was counteracted by the intense motivation to win and leadership
shown by the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong, provoking their victory. As a result, it raises
the question if new technology alone influenced the nature of warfare in this period or if it was a
combination of other aspects including public support, organization, ... Show more content on

heinous crimes, when the photograph was broadcasted it galvanized the anti war movement and was
used as anti war propaganda across the world . This source is reliable as it visually depicts the reality
of war and what was going on in Vietnam. It is an example of why America experienced a rapid
decline of public backing from 1968 to 71, by the end of which only 28% of America s public were in
favor of the war. It was not only ordinary people who determined the Governments choices on warfare
but influential leaders such as Martin Luther King. King once referred to the US government as the
greatest purveyor of violence in the world today during his 1967 Beyond Vietnam speech . This
statement cannot be taken lightly as at this time King would have been a supporter of the Government
in order to assist the Civil Rights Movement and therefore it would have been a great deal for him to
speak out against their actions. For King to do so it highlights that the level of public disgust against
the military action used in Vietnam was

Trotsky Vs Stalin
After Lenin s death in January of 1924, it became apparent that a power struggle between Trotsky and
Stalin had already long been brewing and would soon become far greater. Stalin had quite a different
background than both Trotsky and Lenin. Lyons had explained that Stalin had come from a different
background than Trotsky and Lenin, one where he had never even left Russia. His background largely
contributed to his varying perceptions of Russia and its regime, along with his approach as to how he
would come to power. Lyons wrote, He believed that the Communists had enough to do in Russia
itself. Stalin not only headed the the Secretariat as general secretary but led the Organizational Bureau
as well, which gave him control over the party machinery and personnel (Lyons, 2016, pg. 31). As the
notes about the interwar period had stated, Stalin was rather calculating and had conceived a strategy
that would allow for him to gain control of the state. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

transform Russia into a first class industrial power as quickly as possible. He decided to bring the
entire economy under state control by nationalizing all industry and abolishing private ownership of
land in favor of a system of collectivization (Lyons, 2016, pg. 31). Stalin immediately began to

January, 1795, By Mary Robinson
In the poem January, 1795 by Mary Robinson, she writes about people living in luxury while others
are in poverty. She shows this throughout, such as, Lords in ermine, beggars freezing . The world
around her seemed to be expanding while the rich try to keep up with the new advances while going
bankrupt from their lifestyle in the process. While the poor remain in poverty and seek opportunity as
they beg on the streets or seek shelter, they are overlooked by the wealthy. Robinson describes this as
a very cold and dark time for everyone but she seems to still find the beauty out of the worst
situations.
Robinson describes some social and moral issues throughout this dark time as people struggle to keep
their image and class in society. In line 11 Robinson demonstrates the distinction between the social
classes, while the wealthy people seem to be enjoying themselves and unbothered by the rest of less
fortunate suffering through hard times, Balls, where simp ring misses languish; Hospitals, and groans
of anguish. (11) During this time everything was changing along with the absence of morals from

between right and wrong. Feelings and emotions always play with someone s state of being, but with
Carson, he holds them back. Through the support of his friends and their relationships, he makes those
feelings become more visible.Values and morals are two things many stand by, but for Carson trust is

Irrationality Of Love Essay
Irrationality of Love
An Analysis of Pride and Prejudice and Bright Star
The relentless rivalry between passion and reason is a captivating conflict that often becomes the crux
of innumerable pieces of literature. Admirably, the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the
poem Bright Star by John Keats are renowned because the quarrelling emotions and judgements in
characters evokes empathy in the reader as this conflict typifies a timeless theme. In light of the fact
that the novel and poem share a common theme, it is evident that the story told in the poem mirrors
how Darcy s affections for Elizabeth compete with the standards of his immediate society.

The narrator enforces a reproachful tone by using a simile to compare his possible life to that of a
hermit s as he deplores, Like nature s patient, sleepless Eremite (Keats 4). A hermit symbolizes
seclusion and boredom in one s life as human hermits are in radical circumstances, people who live in
absolute solitude with no need for communication and are no longer dependant on anyone. Although
Anne de Bourgh -whom Darcy is expected to wed- is not a literal hermit living completely
secluded from companions, her painfully reserved and quiet nature boasts similarities. Even Mr.
Collins, who crows over his particular fond acquaintanceship to the de Bourgh women, describes
Anne as a unfortunately of a sickly constitution which has prevented her making that progress in many
accomplishments (Austen 124). Interestingly, the weight of a hermit s shell secludes the being inside,
but it also protects the organism which ironically parallels how Anne is protected by her illness. These
diseases strain her health making her isolated; however, they give an excuse for her timid nature and
unaccomplished life which render her mundane. Thus, the poem s criticizing tone towards the isolated
life the narrator hopes to evade reflects the unattractive life of Anne

However, the overall message the producers gave in the film was a significant knowledge to
fundamental truths and belief in post world war period. The setting, characterization, and conflict
describes the lack of confidence and deception in people, the lack of morality, the lack of connection,
lastly the lack of love for humanity. Holly found that his friend was a dishonest con artist; his lover
did not love him, and was still in shambles without a job. Similar to the worlds view pessimistic view
on government, life, and world issues. Holly twisted around and chooses to be a good person but
violates the morality of association by betraying his friend and killing him. Just when Limes has
hoped to get away, his life ends. The story begins again with the same scene, a funeral. An essential
element to seeing the hope that faded away, a simple disregard for the value of human life. When

MEMORANDUM
INTRODUCTION
You have asked me to determine whether our client Diana Lewis committed unauthorized practice of
law by providing her services. I have done research on statutes and cases. This memorandum will
address the issue of this case, California Bar s claim, and Ms. Lewis s possible defense.
STATEMENT OF FACTS
In May 2001, Diana Lewis earned her Associate of Art degree and Paralegal Certificate from City
College of San Francisco. In June 2001, Ms. Lewis opened her business to prepare legal paperwork
for clients involved in uncontested divorces. She advertises her business in the Daily Journal and the

She works as an independent legal document assistant. The issue is whether she provided advice about
possible legal rights, defense, strategies, etc.
In the People v. Landlords Professional Services, 215 Cal. App. 3d 1599; 264 Cal. Rptr. 548, the court
held that when a non attorney consults his or her clients individually and presents himself or herself
with expertise concerning certain legal problem, he or she is engaged in unauthorized practice of law.
The court s reason for affirming conviction against LPS is that the company provided specific
information to its clients concerning eviction procedure in the context of personal interviews where it
was able to provide additional information and advice addressed to the specific problems and concerns
of its clients, who were likely to rely on its advice, perhaps to their serious detriment. This case is
similar to Diana Lewis s case in that both Ms. Lewis and LPS s representatives are not authorized to
practice law. Both cases have the same issue of definition of practice of law. They both provided legal
document service. The difference is that LPS held individual interviews with its clients and gave
specific advice, whereas Ms. Lewis held conference with her clients. However, Ms. Lewis did discuss
with her clients before the court hearing. State Bar could argue it is possible for Ms. Lewis to provide
additional advice concerning specific problems if her clients. Yet at

Support Group Reflection
Translating What I learned In the grief support group I co lead with a Licensed Professional Clinical
Counselor (LPCC) and supervised by a Master of Social Work I learned how to facilitate a meeting.
The LPCC taught me the person centered approach and the social worker taught me to monitor client s
progression of goals. She allowed me to take lead, to link members together by similarities they share,
and to give members homework. The LPCC believed in self disclosure, she demonstrated this for me
in a fantastic manner the social worker I was with did as well. Teaching me that it is great to self
disclose when appropriate and when it will benefit the progression of the group or for them to feel
comfortable trusting the leader. In my group sessions I did not deem self disclosure appropriate to use.
How I will translate this is to be aware of my clients, to ask them what goals they hope to achieve, and
for them to keep journals of progress. I will create a safe atmosphere for clients to speak, provide
affirmation, and help clients set and maintain goals.
Evolution of Grief Support Group The grief support group I co led was an open group. This led to
introductions and a small orientation at the beginning of each session to create a positive tone for the
group. The other leader led this introduction for the first few sessions and asked me to observe, study,
and determine how I would like to convey an introductory message and the ground rules for the next
sessions. This

Role Transition
Role Development and Role Transition Paper
Introduction:
Taking the time to reflect on one s career can increase self awareness and enhance professional
development. A role development plan is a confidential and integral document created by an
individual which outlines the activities undertaken during their life journey. Moreover, a development
plan is reminiscent of ones past experiences and a glance at the future. Having a professional role
development plan in place is critical for graduate study to keep track of one s progression. The
transition from a bedside nurse to a nurse educator is one that is influenced by some internal and
external factors. The primary purpose of this assignment is to reflect on my journey from a bedside
nurse to a nurse educator and the skills that are required to transition into this new role.
Role as an Educator Researcher:
As I reflect back on my journey from being a bedside nurse to an educator, I can safely say that I was
born to be an educator. My passion for teaching and research has led me to this journey to enhance my
knowledge in obtaining a degree in nursing education. The driving force that brings me on this
journey is my desire for teaching. Hence, as I transition into this new role as a nursing educator, it will

The French And Indian War
Many wars were fought between the English and the French. The French and Indian War was an
important factor in the writing of the Declaration of Independence. The war was very costly for the
British. After the war ended the British thought of ways to gain money from the colonists to help
replenish funds lost from the war. This usually was in the form of taxes. The colonists were not happy
with the British government and made their feelings and opinions known. The colonists wanted their
freedom and independence from England. As time passed the colonists began to show their rebellion
towards the British. There were many acts that the British thought would bring good news for the
colonists but that proved to be far from the truth. Tensions were high and emotions ran strong between
the two. The Declaration of Independence was inevitable ( Declaration of Independence, ). The French
and Indian War began in 1754 and lasted until 1763. It was also known as the seven year war. This
war was between England, with the help of the colonies and the French, and some American Indians.
This war was a continuation of a series of wars between the French and British in North America. The
British spent large amounts of money on supplies and providing troops for the war. In the beginning of
the war the French defeated the British many times and did not change until in 1756, when William
Pitt became the British Secretary of State. The British began to send more supplies which led to the

Hip Hop Culture And Culture
How the Hip Hop Culture Separates But Comes Together The Hip Hop culture itself varies with
individualism and collectivism, along with the power distance experienced with artists collectively
starting joint ventures together as well as having polychronic opportunities but having the same
monochronic idea, which is make money. This cultural began collectively on empowerment. Artists in
this culture use their platform to promote their individuality whether it is good positive rap or gangsta
rap . The Hip Hop Culture comes together collectively in the advancement of wealth and
empowerment but separates through artist s identity of individuality.
Cultural Identities/ Organizing Public and Private Environment
The Hip Hop Culture is collectively huge. However, if you break it down to subgenre culture it
changes drastically. The Hip Hop Culture once started as an expressions of one s life in poverty, the
hood, or the ghetto. When this culture began it became a movement, a more positive one before
gangsta rap hit the scene. East Coast rappers such as Mos Def, A Tribe Call Quest, Goodie Map,
OutKast, and a few others talked about: growing up; not having enough money for rent or grocery;
paying child support; or just trying to making in life itself. Music at that time, many could and can
relate to. While you had Public Enemy promoting self awareness, and taking political stance on world
issues, the gangsta rap , incorporated into the cultural environment, it makes the culture

Difference Between Christianity And Ancient Egyptian Religion
There are many arguments of how Christianity is an evolve religion from ancient Egypt religion.
Especially with the talk between Horus and Jesus, and isis and mary. Christianity both have many
similarities also they have a lot of differences. They both have a god but for ancient Egypt its gods,
they both have a god that has a son, both Christianity and ancient Egypt religion has practices like any
other religion.
Christianity and ancient Egyptian religion have supreme being that they look up too, for Christianity
being God and ancient religion has many gods and the main ones that are known are Osiris, Horus,
and Iris. In both religions Christianity and ancient Egyptian religion they both have gods battling some
type of evil., while god will be battling the devil and Ra would be fighting chaos to keep balance in

Even though mary is not a god she was a virgin who gave birth to Jesus the son of god, while the same
thing happened to Horus and his mother Isis. In both Christianity and ancient Egyptian religion, both
sons of gods died and were resurrected. Jesus resurrecting for the Christians and hours resurrecting

An Analysis Of Don Mozart s Opera Buffa
In his opera buffa, Don Giovanni, Mozart depicts Don Giovanni as a libertine and philanderer. At the
start of Act I, Scene III of the opera, there is a festive peasant wedding, an ensemble between the
bride, Zerlina, the groom, Masetto, and the chorus, which consists of the other peasants, all singing
about the joys of marriage. Don Giovanni, a nobleman, and his manservant, Leporello, interrupts the
wedding, and invites everyone to his villa. He even forces Masetto to go the villa too, leaving Zerlina
alone with Don Giovanni. Before leaving, Masetto protests, but understands that he has no control
over the situation. Then, Masetto sings an aria, Ho Capito, which means I understand, before leaving.
Alone with Zerlina, in recitative, Don Giovanni tries to seduce her and promises to marry her. Shortly
after he sings that they will be married, an ensemble between Don Giovanni and Zerlina starts, in
which Zerlina reveals that she would be happy to marry him but fears that Don Giovanni is deceiving
her. The duet ends with Don Giovanni appearing to succeed with his scheme. Three versions of the
opera, the first conducted by Craig Smith and directed by Peter Sellars in Vienna in 1990, the second
conducted by Colin Davis and directed by John Vernon in the Royal Opera House in London in 1998,
and the third conducted by Nicholas Harnencourt and directed by Brian Large in the Zurich Opera
House in 2001 mostly have the same libretto for this scene and depict a similar disparity in

Atlantic Slave Trade
The origins of the Atlantic Slave Trade were products of Western Europe s expansion of power that
began at the beginning of the 1500 s through the 1900 s. The main contributing European countries to
the Atlantic Slave Trade were Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, France, and England. Portugal lead the
movement during the 1400 s and arrived in Western Africa in hopes to find Christian allies to spread
Christianity against the Muslims of Northern Africa. But they soon became more interested in trade
(Hine, Hine Harrold, 2011). Slavery, however, has existed in all cultures for thousands of years. For
example, Arab merchants and West African Kings imported white European slaves. At first, the slave

Many times, especially during storms, the slavers neglected to feed the slaves or change the tubs and
buckets used for toilets, as well removing dead bodies (Hine, Hine Harrold, 2011). Sanitation was also
a major contributor to death and disease. Only about three or four toilet tubs were provided for all of
the slaves. Mortality rates were exceptionally high on the ships, averaging around 15%. Overall, about
one third of all slaves died during the whole process of moving them from Africa to the Americas. The
main causes of mortality on the ships were diseases such as small pox, malaria, dysentery, yellow
fever and measles (Hine, Hine Harrold, 2011).
There was however still rebellions from the captive slaves aboard the ships. Rebellions usually
occurred when the ship was getting ready to set sail or when they ships were still within sight of the
Africa land mass, when there was still hope for the slaves to return home. Often times slaves would
actually starve themselves intentionally or try to jump off the ship to drown. But to combat this, the
slavers would sometimes put nets on the side of the ship to stop jumpers and to deal with those who
would refuse to eat, the slavers would use hot coals to force individual s mouths open to eat (Hine,
Hine Harrold, 2011). The women aboard the slave ships were treated very badly as well. They were
often raped and sexually abused. Many times, all of the women were kept in separate rooms to make it

Government Corruption Political Corruption is has a drastic effect on every American Citizen.
Corruption is defined as a form of unethical or dishonest conduct by an individual who is in a position
of authority. Corruption has detrimental effects and undermines every level of government. Various
forms of corruption effect the Government. Corruption such as Law Enforcement, Judicial, and
Correctional. In order for our justice system to work, we as citizens must have faith that it is impartial,
just and fair for all. Corruption in any form in our system is dangerous, but corruption in the justice
system can have disastrous effects not only on the system but the lives of citizens. The most notable
form of corruption found in the justice system is Law Enforcement Corruption. Law Enforcement
Corruption is the misconduct and abuse of power by law enforcement officers. Misconduct such as
bribery, extortion, and misconduct. Bribery is when one person guarantees an outcome of a situation
in exchange for goods, services or money. Extortion is similar is the act of obtaining something by
utilizing force or blackmail. Abuse of Power is the act of using one s authority in a way that is
detrimental to others. In the instance of Law Enforcement, it is usually used to describe excessive
physical violence to individuals (The Week Staff). Instances of Police Brutality and Abuse of Power
have increased in the news since the March 1991 of Rodney King by the Los Angeles Police
Department. However, since the 90 s, this abuse has escalated to murder. On April 5, 2015, in North
Charleston, South Carolina Patrolman Michael Slager pulled over Walter Scott for driving with a
broken brake light. Scott then fled the scene on foot and was fatally shot eight times. Slager was
charged with murder after cellphone footage proved he shot Scott as he was fleeing the scene
(Swaine). In May of 2017, Slager pled guilty to the use of excessive force and awaits sentencing
(Balchunas). With the escalation of racial tension in this country, it is vital that police brutality be dealt
with. It is important for every person in this country to feel safe and protected by police forces.

Persepolis Culture Vs Australian Culture
There are two things in life that are important the first thing is your culture and the second thing is
your values because your culture is how you behave and the norms you follow and your values is what
you consider important. This paper is going to analyze two cultures and a value represented in the
book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. The two cultures are Australia and Iran. And value is the veil. In
the book, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, the culture of Australia represented freedom. The reason why
it represented freedom was because Marjane could do things that weren t allowed in Iran. For
instance, in Australia attitudes on sex, entertainment, drugs, diversity, and even freedom were much
looser there than what Marjane was used to (Peterson). While in Iran she was unable to party at all and
couldn t express her opinion (Peterson). When you are in another country and you see that a person is
not doing the things that you are used to doing could be very surprising. For example, In the story
Growing Up American: Doing the Right Thing by Amparo B. Oteja, she talks about how chocked she
was when she heard children in America calling older people by their first names (Hirschberg).

more related to girls doing it. This is an example of diversity because she is showing them that the

thing if girls do boy activities and if boys do girl activities. The second example of diversity in the

The Song On Darkness On The Edge Of Town By Bruce Springsteen
Oftentimes musicians draw from their own lives, past and present, to find inspiration for their music.
Sometimes they will pick out past experiences or people to write about, and it makes the music more
personal and interesting. In the case of Bruce Springsteen, he grew up relatively poor in Asbury Park,
New Jersey, and frequently talks about the people he grew up with. Because of Bruce Springsteen s
civilian background, he was inspired to write Darkness on the Edge of Town, a concept album about
the struggles of the working class. The first song on Darkness on the Edge of Town, Badlands , is
about the struggles that the working class have to face everyday. Bruce represents the workingman,
the blue collar majority because he grew up in a blue collar family. This song was a hit because
Springsteen s fans felt that they could relate to the lyrics. The protagonist does not ...give a damn/For

Torture In The 8th Amendment
Solitary confinement can be considered as torture by several people due to the mental pain or suffering
that is caused by it. But would solitary confinement be considered an unusual and cruel punishment to
the point of violating the eighth amendment? Is torture considered a bad thing? Solitary confinement
has been the only choice that the system could think of in order to reprimand those who have already
done something wrong. Torture is often used for the purpose of having a positive outcome, which is
not a bad thing depending on the situation and its extent. The eighth amendment of the United States
Constitution was first introduced by James Madison for the purpose of prohibiting some punishments
that are not legal, such as painful and hard labor. This amendment states that punishments must be fair,
not cruel, and must have a certain limit. The eighth amendment also prohibits the imposition of
excessive bail and excessive fines. For example, an accused must be treated as an innocent person
before he or she is proven otherwise. Excessive bail depends on how severe the situations are. Other
great examples of the 8th amendment prohibitions are castration, burning at the stake, and quartering.
Based on the wording of the amendment, I believe that the use of solitary confinement in the United
States does not violate citizens eighth amendment rights. A cruel and unusual punishment would be
considered grossly disproportionate, which doesn t exactly concord with solitary

How Did The Czech Republic Influence The World
Ask the average American to name one influential person from the Czech Republic and you will likely

Imagine a world without Protestantism, without universal education, without contact lenses. Then, the
cultural influence of the Czech Republic becomes clear.
A century before Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to a church door, Czech priest Jan Hus had
already begun protesting the Catholic church. Although he was burned at the stake for heresy, he left
behind writings that later helped spark the Protestant Reformation, an event that would change the
course of history forever. A Czech man also changed education forever. It is difficult to find a ... Show

In the aftermath of World War II, the Soviet Union took control of Czechoslovakia. These communist
rulers encouraged the arts as long as artists supported communist rule. Ironically, it would be the arts
that led to their downfall. A group of writers pushing for an end to censorship led to the start of Prague
Spring, a hopeful time of democratic reforms in the 1960s. However, the Soviet army brutally crushed
this peaceful revolt shortly after. The Czech people could have been discouraged by this, disillusioned
by the thought of using peace as a method for throwing off oppression. But they were not. In 1989,
another writer, this time a playwright by the name of Vaclav Havel, again led a peaceful revolution.
The Velvet Revolution successfully ended Communism in the Czech Republic and led to the
democracy the Czech Republic enjoys today. The fighters in this revolution were not armies, but
artists. Across the country, theater companies advocated for strikes and protest. This revolution
showed that the biggest threat to communism came from neither weaponry nor militaries, but from art
and the uniting of the common people. As president of the newly independent Czechoslovakia, Havel
allowed the nation to split in two without any fighting or bloodshed. As ethnic conflicts ravaged
Yugoslavia and destroyed Rwanda, Czechoslovakia demonstrated a peaceful resolution of

Gender And Prime Time From An Early Age
Gender and Prime Time From an early age we learn the differences between girls and boys. Girls like
pink, boys like blue. Girls play with dolls, boys play in the dirt. While these definitions seem harmless
they become much more complex as girls and boys grow to women and men. Women become
emotional mothers and housekeepers while men become firm professionals. Where do we get these
stereotypes? Many would argue that one of the most influential sources of gender stereotyping is
television, the main cultural storyteller in the United States (Emons, Wester, and Scheepers 40). In
most developed countries television has the widest reach of any medium and it can, and does,
intensely influence opinions of all ages of viewers. The average time per person per week spent
involved with television is around 31 hours in the US. That is a number higher than most European
countries like Britain, France, and Germany (Furnham and Bitar 297). Female characters on TV are
depicted as younger, unemployed, and are more likely to be married while male characters reveal
much less information about family and marital status and are more likely to be seen in occupational
roles. One popular trend in television right now is crime TV. CSI in particular was the top rated show
in the US from 2002 to 2005 according to Nielsen Media Research and is the only crime drama to ever
top the Nielsen ratings (Lavigne 385). Gender and sexuality are not the main focus of CSI but their
ambiguity could perhaps be

Texas And The Population Of Texas
As shown in table 1 above, Texas overall population has been comparatively higher than that of the
United States population since the year 1970. Even during the year 1990, when Texas had faced a
major oil and real estate decline the state of Texas and was still able to come out on top with a gain of
nearly 3.9 million citizens (chart site). When looking deeper into the population of Texas one may
question what keeps Texas population from decreasing and only two things are to blame. That is that
the state of Texas has a higher than average birth rate and that Texas new population growth is
growing at strong pace of net migration. Texas higher than average birth rate can partially be an
outcome of the amount of the states Hispanic heritage and its ties to Mexico, where total fertility rates
were 2.5 percent in 2004, quite a bit higher than the United states 2.1 percent (chart site). However,
most growth in the Hispanic population from 2000 to 2010 was due to births, not immigration, a
change from the long time pattern (Passel). When taking this statistic into account and looking into
table 2 and 3 above Texas overall population from the year 2000 to 2040 will begin to decrease in the
amount of Anglos, where as the amount of Hispanic individuals will begin to increase and will be
overall younger. This proves that the state of Texas will continue to see a large increase in its

Articles Of Confederation And Decentralization Of The States

to pay for the cost of the Revolutionary War and the cost of starting a new nation. Another issue under
the Articles of Confederation was the lack of economic control the federal government had on the

and continued making deals with foreign countries. This caused debt and bankruptcy to fall upon
numerous states. The Articles of Confederation also

in such extreme conditions they died from sickness, lack of food, or exhaustion. They wernt fed

There were so many that we would have been covered with them had we not scraped them off
immediately. Even so, our skins were pitted with bites and boils from their attacks. The way we had to
live was disgusting. This example of how they had to sleep was consistent across all bracks. The bed
bugs and lice infestation continued to multiply and people s hopes dwindled in such gruesome
circumstances. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Nazi s knew that the more the prisioners feared death the harder they would work. The less that
they would complain, and it also mitigated the risk of a revolt. For these reasons if someone ever got a
sick, they felt like they had nowhere to turn. Go to the hospital and be killed because they cannot
perform manual labor or tough it out to the extreme. When Eva s feet became so severe that there was
no other options she finally folded and went to the hospital, partially because she wanted to see her
mother. The medical facilities were less than abysmal. They we downright sickening. People were
packed into them like cattle being herded by their owner. Forced to sleep in bunks 3 high, 2 people per
bed. The risk not only of contamination but infectious disease spread was immense. Eva tells the
readers about the situation in Chapter 13. The stench urine, stale flesh and death hit my nostrils.
(Evelyn, Kent, Page 118) This description yet again points back to the erosion of any human dignity.

The Challenges Of Manification In Margaret Atwood s The...
Attwood gives the maids the justice they deserved by giving them a voice to tell their story. She
brought to light the trouble of the maids, whom many barely even spared a second thought, and forced
readers to hear their side of the story. Their story was riveting and compelling in such a way that with
less than half the novel dedicated to them, they still commandeered the attention of the story. While
Attwood will never be able to right all the wrongs that were done to the maids in The Odyssey, she has
done, to the best of her ability, to correct the misgivings done to them and her best was well worth the
effort. The maids point of view of what occurred to them during The Odyssey, will not soon be

stratification: a critical reading of Margaret Atwood s The Penelopiad).
The other narrative of this novel focusses on Penelope. Penelope is telling her side of the story from
the underworld. Penelope has many character flaws that range from her proneness to weeping to her
bitter view of others and herself. The Odyssey made Penelope out as a flat character who had no
character development and the two most notable thing about her character were her ability to cry over
everything and how she wove and unwove the shroud she was making for her father in law. Attwood
shows her as a cunning and imperfect character that is more dynamic than her original depiction.
Attwood s version of Penelope is

Comparing The Enuma Elish And Book Of Genesis
As written in the Old Testament the Creation Story describing how the Earth and mankind were
created became a fundamental part of Judaism and Christianity. Creation myths similar to the Judaic
and Christian creation myth are found in other ancient civilizations and cultures of the Near East such
as the Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians and the Persians. The Enuma Elish also known
as the Seven Tablets of Creation, written as early as 1800BC, and discovered, in 1849AD, exhibits
parallels to the creation as described in the Old Testament. These seven tablets written in a
combination of Sumerian Akkadian cuneiform script details the creation of the Earth and mankind in
six days.

From the Canaanite dialect of the Semitic language the word lehem, which is the last part of the name
of Bethlehem means city of bread. Scholars such as William Albright along with others claim that the
lehem comes from the older Semitic root word Lahmu and Lahamu, instead of the Canaanite word
meaning bread. Two other words that have similar meanings are Tiamat and Tehowm. From Sumerian,
Babylonian mythology Tiamat is the goddess of the primordial oceans and bearer of sky and the Earth
and the Hebrew word Tehowm is a derivate of the Ugaritic Semitic dialect t h m, which is from the
root word of the Akkadian Semitic dialect tamtu. The Akkadians established the Semitic language in
nation of Sumer where the word Tiamat came from. The word Tehowm means the deep or the abyss
and also makes reference to the biblical primordial waters of creation as used in Genesis 1:2, from the
Orthodox Jewish Bible, as well as mentioned in seven other places in the Old Testament. The
following is the Hebrew Semitic version of Genesis 1:2, combined with an English translation from
the Greek Septuagint Bible and the King James Version in italic

Gerrymandering Pros And Cons Gerrymandering is the process of altering electoral districts to favor a political party over the other by receiving more votes in that districts based on the population demographics and party affiliation. Gerrymandering was founded when Governor Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts had enacted a bill that would allow the state to the redistricted in a way that would favor the party he represented, which was the Democratic Republican Party, over the Federalists. The redistribution of districts definitely helped voters that felt underrepresented especially those in rurals and cities but this still presents problems with small pockets of voters that are either undecided or strongly in favor of one party over their districts affiliation. The new NY District 23 is a perfect example of this. District 23 is lead by Congressman Tom Reed, a Republican representing a very rural area of Southern Tier New York. The cities of Corning, Ithaca, Olean, Jamestown, and Dunkirk are scattered throughout the district with dozens of public and private universities also present. The district population is mostly isolated in the cities with sparse populations elsewhere. A majority of the population would be young, due to the universities, and mostly urban, because of the cities, so you expect the district to be blue, wrong. District 23 is in fact red, because of the lack of mobilization of young voters to go out and vote. Because of this, older more rural voters decide the party affiliation of the district resulting in representation by Reed. Some argue that Tom Reed s district is gerrymandered in his favor which resulted in his reelection this past November. Although he was reelected, there was still a presence of more younger voters making an effort to go out and vote. John Plumb, Reed s Democratic opponent, had great outreach in the Chautauqua ... First, religious views in the Roman Empire that spread throughout the Mediterranean changed from polytheism to monotheism over time because people were unsatisfied with the lack of spiritual passion in their current beliefs. Second, political structures and forms of government changed from independent city states and republics to empires due to expanding political entities, trade, and colonization. The agora was strategically designed to be in the center of a city state as a marketplace for the general public to shop and gather. Many Greek city states built temples and monuments to honor their patron deity and serve as religious structures. The most famous of those temples was the Parthenon in Athens, which was considered a massive architectural feat at the time. Approximately one century after the Parthenon was constructed, Alexander the Great began to spread Hellenistic art. Two major statues of Hellenistic art were the Colossus of Rhodes and Nike of Samothrace. The sculptures honored the two gods and commemorated war victories. Similar to Greece, Ancient Rome s architects designed structures benefiting the general public, political religion, and religion. • 5. Fences Analysis On Fences By August Wilson Fences Analysis In the play Fences by August Wilson the play s attitude toward women is biased, and if the play was written by a female I think it would have a stronger feminine influence. Issues such as racism and discrimination against blacks may be raised in the play that the author did not bring up, and the women in the story somewhat do generally typify women in the 1950s. To support my interpretation, the women in the play were homebodies, just worrying about the household because they felt like that s what they were supposed to do and that s all that was expected of them and etc. I think it s a perfect example of women in the 1950s because after the war, women still found themselves in traditional roles but were slowly breaking out of them. When the men returned from the war, many women wished to keep their jobs but instead became stay at home mothers who were expected to care for the children as well as cook and clean. Many ads and TV shows portrayed the perfect wife and mother that women in the 1950s were expected to be. Rose deals with Troy s nonsense mostly because she feels she has too, and even after Troy cheated on her and had a baby by another woman she took care of the baby. An example of this is when Rose said I told him if he was not the marrying kind, then move out the way so the marrying kind could find me. The goal of this grouping is for each class to be made up of students who are homogeneous in standardized intelligence or achievement test scores (Snowman, Biehler). In this type of grouping, the schools separate their students into different classes or courses. Between class ability grouping is where students spend most of the day in ability groups and use the same or similar curriculum substantially adjusted to their ability levels (Ability Grouping 3). This being said, there are a number of disadvantages as well. One such example is the fact that the regrouping plan takes a considerable amount of time for planning. Teachers have to be very cooperative and must be in agreement with one another. Another disadvantage is that teachers and students meet with one another less frequently. [ ] Many teachers are uncomfortable working with children whom they see only once a day for an hour or so (Snowman, 2003, p.186). Although a derivative of the regrouping method, the Joplin Plan is perhaps the most unique of the four types of ability grouping due to its process of cross grade grouping. A variation of the regrouping method, the Joplin Plan is also known as the simplest form of ability groups. This grouping plan assigns students to heterogeneous classes for most of the day, but regroups them across grade levels for reading instruction (Hollifield 2000). This is in effort to group students for reading instruction on the basis of ability level, regardless of age or grade. An example of the Joplin plan would be to group all third, fourth, and fifth graders whose grade equivalent scores in reading are 4.6. The same can (and usually is) done for mathematics. The war was very costly for the British. After the war ended the British thought of ways to gain money from the colonists to help replenish funds lost from the war. This usually was in the form of taxes. The colonists were not happy with the British government and made their feelings and opinions known. The colonists wanted their freedom and independence from England. As time passed the colonists began to show their rebellion towards the British. There were many acts that the British thought would bring good news for the colonists but that proved to be far from the truth. Tensions were high and emotions ran strong between the two. The Declaration of Independence was inevitable ( Declaration of Independence, ). The French and Indian War began in 1754 and lasted until 1763. It was also known as the seven year war. This war was between England, with the help of the colonies and the French, and some American Indians. This war was a continuation of a series of wars between the French and British in North America. • 28. An Analysis Of Don Mozart s Opera Buffa In his opera buffa, Don Giovanni, Mozart depicts Don Giovanni as a libertine and philanderer. At the start of Act I, Scene III of the opera, there is a festive peasant wedding, an ensemble between the bride, Zerlina, the groom, Masetto, and the chorus, which consists of the other peasants, all singing about the joys of marriage. Don Giovanni, a nobleman, and his manservant, Leporello, interrupts the wedding, and invites everyone to his villa. He even forces Masetto to go the villa too, leaving Zerlina alone with Don Giovanni. Before leaving, Masetto protests, but understands that he has no control over the situation. Then, Masetto sings an aria, Ho Capito, which means I understand, before leaving. Alone with Zerlina, in recitative, Don Giovanni tries to seduce her and promises to marry her. Shortly after he sings that they will be married, an ensemble between Don Giovanni and Zerlina starts, in which Zerlina reveals that she would be happy to marry him but fears that Don Giovanni is deceiving her. The duet ends with Don Giovanni appearing to succeed with his scheme. Three versions of the opera, the first conducted by Craig Smith and directed by Peter Sellars in Vienna in 1990, the second conducted by Colin Davis and directed by John Vernon in the Royal Opera House in London in 1998, and the third conducted by Nicholas Harnencourt and directed by Brian Large in the Zurich Opera House in 2001 mostly have the same libretto for this scene and depict a similar disparity in ... In the book, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, the culture of Australia represented freedom. The reason why it represented freedom was because Marjane could do things that weren t allowed in Iran. For instance, in Australia attitudes on sex, entertainment, drugs, diversity, and even freedom were much looser there than what Marjane was used to (Peterson). While in Iran she was unable to party at all and couldn t express her opinion (Peterson). But would solitary confinement be considered an unusual and cruel punishment to the point of violating the eighth amendment? Is torture considered a bad thing? Solitary confinement has been the only choice that the system could think of in order to reprimand those who have already done something wrong. Torture is often used for the purpose of having a positive outcome, which is not a bad thing depending on the situation and its extent. The eighth amendment of the United States Constitution was first introduced by James Madison for the purpose of prohibiting some punishments that are not legal, such as painful and hard labor. This amendment states that punishments must be fair, not cruel, and must have a certain limit. The eighth amendment also prohibits the imposition of excessive bail and excessive fines. For example, an accused must be treated as an innocent person before he or she is proven otherwise. Excessive bail depends on how severe the situations are. Other great examples of the 8th amendment prohibitions are castration, burning at the stake, and quartering. Based on the wording of the amendment, I believe that the use of solitary confinement in the United States does not violate citizens eighth amendment rights. • 37. Gender And Prime Time From An Early Age Gender and Prime Time From an early age we learn the differences between girls and boys. Girls like pink, boys like blue. Girls play with dolls, boys play in the dirt. While these definitions seem harmless they become much more complex as girls and boys grow to women and men. Women become emotional mothers and housekeepers while men become firm professionals. Where do we get these stereotypes? Many would argue that one of the most influential sources of gender stereotyping is television, the main cultural storyteller in the United States (Emons, Wester, and Scheepers 40). In most developed countries television has the widest reach of any medium and it can, and does, intensely influence opinions of all ages of viewers. The average time per person per week spent involved with television is around 31 hours in the US. That is a number higher than most European countries like Britain, France, and Germany (Furnham and Bitar 297). Female characters on TV are depicted as younger, unemployed, and are more likely to be married while male characters reveal much less information about family and marital status and are more likely to be seen in occupational roles. One popular trend in television right now is crime TV. CSI in particular was the top rated show in the US from 2002 to 2005 according to Nielsen Media Research and is the only crime drama to ever top the Nielsen ratings (Lavigne 385). Even during the year 1990, when Texas had faced a major oil and real estate decline the state of Texas and was still able to come out on top with a gain of nearly 3.9 million citizens (chart site). When looking deeper into the population of Texas one may question what keeps Texas population from decreasing and only two things are to blame. That is that the state of Texas has a higher than average birth rate and that Texas new population growth is growing at strong pace of net migration. Texas higher than average birth rate can partially be an outcome of the amount of the states Hispanic heritage and its ties to Mexico, where total fertility rates were 2.5 percent in 2004, quite a bit higher than the United states 2.1 percent (chart site). However, most growth in the Hispanic population from 2000 to 2010 was due to births, not immigration, a change from the long time pattern (Passel). When taking this statistic into account and looking into table 2 and 3 above Texas overall population from the year 2000 to 2040 will begin to decrease in the amount of Anglos, where as the amount of Hispanic individuals will begin to increase and will be overall younger.
