Depression is the most common mental illness in North America, affecting around 15% of the population of developed countries. Depression causes daily difficulties and pain for those who have it as well as their loved ones. While depression affects women at higher rates, many depressed individuals, especially men and African American males, do not seek treatment due to personal weakness or embarrassment. Untreated depression can lead to symptoms like sadness, sleep changes, appetite changes, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and in severe cases, suicidal thoughts.
