Upon exiting my vehicle in front of the clinic, I noticed the usual group of protestors gathered at the
front entrance. Today was different, there were three men creating a cacophonous noise with trumpets

length because I consider his third argument to be his most comprehensive. Last, I will address his

Argument 1.
Any given thing requires a reason to be generated, including what is (supplied)
It makes no sense to say that a reason suddenly existed for what is to be generated (11.8, 9 10)
Therefore what is was not generated (11.8, 11)
This argument takes place in the space of just a few lines, in which Parmenides poses a question what
need would have roused it, later or earlier, to grow, having begun from nothing? (11.8, 9 10). It here
refers to what is. He assumes that everything has a reason to be generated some specific need but he
cannot see why this reason would suddenly appear. The phrase later or earlier might point to how
difficult it is to believe that at an arbitrary moment in time what is suddenly had a reason to spring into
existence. If no such need could have appeared, then what is could not have been generated.
Parmenides applies this argument specifically to what is being generated from what is not, or having
begun from nothing (11.8, 10). And the argument certainly does seem to challenge the idea of
generation from nothing, but I have left it neutral as regards the source of what is in my reconstruction
here. I did this because I believe he can also apply Argument 1 to challenge the idea of generation
from what is, not only from what is not. It should apply to both because the only way to say that what

While it may seem outmoded to think in terms of one versus two career households, research does
show that there may be some key differences between the two. Of course, the infinite variety of
permutations of work and family make it difficult if not impossible to generalize or make any
judgments about whether one family structure is better than any other. The number of kids, the
presence of any disabilities among the children, the ethnic background of the individuals, the
definition of career, and the socio economic class or status issues also come into play when comparing
and contrasting single versus dual career households. In general, though a dual career household offers
greater opportunities for financial stability, gender equity, and positive role modeling for children.
Early research on the differences between one and two career families revealed patterns and trends
related to gender roles and gender equality. Burke Weir (1976), for example, found that single career
households tended to entail a female housewife who tended to domestic duties and child rearing. In
such families, the housewife was usually in a passive role, whereas the husband served in a position of
dominance and power (Burke Weir, 1976). In dual career households in the 1970s, there was a greater

another story. Everyone s reality is different and everyone s perspective on same sex marriage is
different. If society came together as a whole and realized that any person who is categorized as gay
has the same opportunities in life that anyone else has. They cannot help that they are gay, they were
born that way. Being who you are is especially important in order to feel accepted as a person.

Through Homer s Iliad, it is revealed that Greeks thought fighting in battle and victory constituted a
good life. To them, the definition of a hero seems to be someone who can battle and be victorious in
war, no matter what the cost. Heroes believe that risking their own lives as well as the lives of those
surrounding them. In a way this is what they viewed as honorable for any Grecian warrior: one who
would lay down their life for the battle. In this story, I admire Nestor for his wisdom and perseverance.
Although old and frail, Nestor could always be found at the front of each battle. As I was reading, I
