Coupling is power transmission elements which
is used for Transmitting power from one
shaft to the another.
It is used to make permanent or semi-permanent connection.
1.To connect shafts of motor and generator .
2. To reduce the transmission of shock loads
from one shaft to another.
3. To allow misalignment of the shaft or to
introduce mechanical flexibility.
4. To introduce protection against
overloads.
Couplings are divided into two main groups
COUPLINGS
Rigid couplings
Sleeve or muff
coupling
Clamp or split
muff or
compression
coupling
Flange coupling
Flexible coupling
Bushed pin type
flange coupling
Universal
coupling
Oldham coupling
It is used to connect two shafts which
are perfectly in axial alignment these
couplings do not allow any relative
rotation between the two shaft.
• Used to connect shafts that are
precisely aligned
sleeve or muff coupling:
• The muff or sleeve is made into two halves of
cast iron.
•They both are joined by nut and bolts.
•This coupling is used for heavy power
transmission at moderate speed.
•Two threaded holes are provided in order to lock
the coupling in position.
•It is the simplest type of rigid coupling which is made from
cast iron.
•The hollow cylinder (muff) is fitted over the ends of the two
shafts with the help of taper sunk key.
•The advantage of this coupling is that assembling or
disassembling of the coupling is Possible Without change
the position of shaft.
•This coupling is used for heavy power transmission at
moderate speed .
•This coupling is having two separate cast iron
flanges.
•The flanges can be of protected type
or unprotected type.
•The flange couplings are rigid and accurate.
•It is used for heavy power transmission at low
speed.
•The flanges are connected firmly by means of fitted
bolts which are tightened accordingly to the torque
to be transmitted.
•A spigot and recess is provided in the flanges to
provide location between them.
Flexible couplings are used to protect the driving
and driven machines from effect of shocks,
excessive stresses due to deflection and vibration
which may arise from misalignment of shafts.
This type of coupling allows for imperfect
alignment of two joining shaft.
• This type of coupling allows for imperfect alignment of two joining
shaft.
• This type of coupling has pins which works as a coupling bolt. The
rubber or leather bushes are used over pins.
• Rubber bush absorbs shocks and vibrations during operation.
• It is generally used to couple electric motor and machine.
• This type of coupling has a pins and it work as a coupling bolts.

having two halves are dissimilar in construction.
•This type of coupling is mostly used to couple an eclectic motor and
machine
This type of coupling is used to join
two parallel shafts with small offset.
• It is used in connecting two parallel shafts whose axes are
at small distance apart.
• The flanges have projection sand disc is provided with two
slots on both sides which are right angle to each other.
• The rotation of drive shaft causes the rotation and sliding
of disc which transmits the motion and power to the driven
shaft.
• It consists of two flange with slots and a central floating
disc .
•The disc having tongues which is allows for horizontal and
vertical relative motion.
This type of coupling is used to join
two intersecting shaft.
•This coupling is used to connect two shafts
whose axes will intersect.
•The angle between the shaft axes may vary
slightly during operation.
•It is widely used in automobile and machine
tools.

Coupling

  • 2. Coupling is power transmission elements which is used for Transmitting power from one shaft to the another. It is used to make permanent or semi-permanent connection.
  • 3. 1.To connect shafts of motor and generator . 2. To reduce the transmission of shock loads from one shaft to another. 3. To allow misalignment of the shaft or to introduce mechanical flexibility. 4. To introduce protection against overloads.
  • 4. Couplings are divided into two main groups COUPLINGS Rigid couplings Sleeve or muff coupling Clamp or split muff or compression coupling Flange coupling Flexible coupling Bushed pin type flange coupling Universal coupling Oldham coupling
  • 5. It is used to connect two shafts which are perfectly in axial alignment these couplings do not allow any relative rotation between the two shaft. • Used to connect shafts that are precisely aligned
  • 6. sleeve or muff coupling: • The muff or sleeve is made into two halves of cast iron. •They both are joined by nut and bolts. •This coupling is used for heavy power transmission at moderate speed. •Two threaded holes are provided in order to lock the coupling in position.
  • 7. •It is the simplest type of rigid coupling which is made from cast iron. •The hollow cylinder (muff) is fitted over the ends of the two shafts with the help of taper sunk key. •The advantage of this coupling is that assembling or disassembling of the coupling is Possible Without change the position of shaft. •This coupling is used for heavy power transmission at moderate speed .
  • 8. •This coupling is having two separate cast iron flanges. •The flanges can be of protected type or unprotected type. •The flange couplings are rigid and accurate. •It is used for heavy power transmission at low speed. •The flanges are connected firmly by means of fitted bolts which are tightened accordingly to the torque to be transmitted. •A spigot and recess is provided in the flanges to provide location between them.
