2. INTRODUCTION
• Gender issues are crucial to be addressed in
development, being that gender equality is also Human
Right.
• Economic reasons especially the agriculture sector,
– Where gender inequalities in access to and control over
resources and land are persistent
– This undermines sustainable and inclusive development
of the sector.
• Distributional issues are related to gender differences,
arising from the socially constructed relationship
between men and women.

• This affects the distribution of resources
between them and cause many constraints in
development outcomes.
• Gender roles and relations affects agriculture
and household welfare critical for human
development.
• We must also stress more on rights of women
and youths to own land especially young
women.

• We should be able to change retrogressive social
norms/cultures that work against women to
ensure they are effective to agriculture.
• According to FAO 70% of food on the table is
produced by small scale farmers over which 75%
are women.
• This means that women are central in food
production.

those working there are women but are
working in deplorable conditions.

owners are men.

8. YOUTH AND AGRICULTURE
• Youth empowerment projects and agriculture
are mainly targeting young men leaving out
young women.
• This is also a constraint of limiting young
women effective contributing to agriculture.
• Different stakeholders needs to think
strategically on how to bridge the gap
between urban youth and rural youth, the
importance of taking them as primary
stakeholders in development of agriculture in
the region.

9. MOVING FROM POLICY TO ACTION
CGHRDs Kenya has:
• Been able to join other social movements and
defenders that defend rights of farmers
• Met with the Nairobi County committee on
agriculture to push for the UN declaration on the
right of peasant, that was passed in the UN
council now going to the UN general assembly.
• If it goes through we will push for domestication.

• Encouraged community sack gardening in
Mathare and Kangemi ( low income urban
settlements)
• Encouraged equitable ownership of property
at the domestic level amongst the different
genders within the family set up
• Encouraged the de-stigmatization of
agriculture amongst young people as option
for those who have ‘failed’

• There is great importance to involve both
women and youth as the primary stakeholders
in the agriculture sector.
