WHAT IS CEMENT ?
A cement is a binder, a substance used
in construction that sets and hardens
and can bind other materials together.
PRODUCTION OF CEMENT
• Cement is the product obtained by burning a
well-proportioned mixture of Siliceous,
Argillaceous and Calcareous materials and
crushing the same into a fine powder.
• About 80% of the civil engineering structures
use various types of cement concrete in one
or the other form.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CEMENT
• High compressive Strength
• Flexible & mouldable
• Easy to handle and use
• Good Binder
• Almost any kind of structure or finishing can
be obtained
TYPES OF CEMENT
• Various types of cement used to make concrete. Some of the
important types of cement is described below.
(1) Ordinary Portland Cement: This is the cement used for normal concrete
construction.
• Portland cement consist of the following components:
• Lime 60% to 67%
• Silica 17% to 25%
• Alumina 3% to 8%
• Iron Oxide 0.5% to 6%
• Magnesia 0.1% to 4%
• Soda & Potash 0.2% to 1%
• Sulphur trioxide 1 to 2.75%
• Free lime 0% to 1%
(2)Rapid Hardening Portland Cement:
• This type of cement is manufactured in a manner similar to that of
ordinary Portland cement, but it differs in terms of chemical composition,
degree of burning and grinding.
• This contains greater lime content than Ordinary Portland cement. This
required better quality control.
(3)Low Heat Portland Cement:
• During the process of setting and hardening of an cement, and
considerable rise of temperature occurs. In massive construction like
abutments, retaining walls, dams etc. the rate at which the heat can be
lost at the surface is lower than at which the heat is initially generated.
(4)Portland Pozzolana Cement:
• This cement is made either by inter-grinding Portland cement clinker and
pozzolana or by uniform blending Portland cement and fine pozzolana
• They can also resist attack by sea water better than ordinary cement since
the pozzolana cement has a lower heat evolution and is popularly used in
the construction of dams (example: Bhakra Dam).
(5) White Cement
• White cement has practically the same composition and has the same
strength as ordinary Portland cement.
• This cement, due to its white colour is mainly used for interior and
exterior decorative work like external rendering of buildings, facing slabs,
flooring, ornamental concrete products, swimming pools etc.
