Traffic congestion is a major problem in Tehran, where over 14 million people live within 800 square kilometers and there are 3 million cars and 2 million motorcycles. Over 12 million trips are made daily, causing congestion due to population growth, the large number of vehicles, inadequate road and public transportation infrastructure, and poor driving habits. This leads to increased travel times, fuel consumption, accidents, stress, and air and water pollution. Tactics to reduce congestion include expanding public transportation, reducing private vehicle use, improving traffic behavior, shifting trips to non-peak hours, encouraging carpooling, restricting traffic in crowded areas, and implementing traffic management systems and gas rationing policies.
