This document outlines a study on pedestrian and bicycle facility planning for Kochi City, India. The aim is to assess existing pedestrian and bicycle facilities, identify conflicts, understand pedestrian movement patterns, and evaluate feasibility of bicycle facilities. Primary data collection methods include surveys of pedestrians, commuters, roads, and parking facilities. Secondary data was obtained from local authorities. Expert opinions were gathered. The methodology involves data collection, analysis, assessment to locate problems, identify potentials and constraints, and develop network guidelines and proposals to improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility, safety, and reduce vehicle conflicts.

• AIM The aim of this study is to assess the level of pedestrian and bicycle facilities in
Kochi city region and formulate strategies and plans for pedestrian and bicycle friendly
urban transport for Kochi city.

CASE STUDIES ON LOCAL BICYCLE CLUBS

Athi’s Bicycle Club

The club was introduced in the city on a trial basis last May. But it stopped when the registered members exceeded 2,000.
The SMS-driven club will be launched with cycle racks at 14 major points in the city with three to four cycles each. The
service will be charged at Rs. 2 per hour.
Members can rent a cycle immediately after registration. They just need to SMS the rack code and bicycle ID while taking
the cycle. They will, in turn, get the code to open the cycle lock.

A joint effort by Infopark and Athi Bicycle Club, initially had 50 bicycles and eight racks.
The authorities are planning to introduce 18 more bicycles and two more racks.
Around 350 employees in the club.
