cannot move or move slowly because of there being
too much traffic or some other reasons on the road.
5. The Cities which are affected
by Traffic Congestion.

9) London (U.K.)
10) Texas (U.S.A)
6. How about Dhaka City ……??
• Although a modern city should have 25 per cent of its
total area devoted to road use, Dhaka has only 7 per
cent. Traffic jams have become intolerable in Dhaka.
7. Causes of Congestion in Dhaka City
1) Increasing Number of Traffic
In Bangladesh, population and traffic growth rate is
approximately 1.5 to 7 percent respectively. As per BRTA
(Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, 2014) source at
present the total number of approved vehicle in Dhaka city
is 785352. Among these,
Bus -20534,
Auto rickshaw (Taxi)-7949,
Tempo-1664,

9. 2) Inadequacy of traffic police
Traffic police in Dhaka is inadequate in
number compared to the traffic in
Bangladesh. All the cross roads need at
least four traffic police at a time whereas
in Dhaka it is seen that the number is not
sufficient all the time.
10. 3) Less roads compared to traffic
Dhaka city has obviously less roads than it needs. The traffic
is being increased day by day but the roads are not.
Dhaka city has only 7% of its total area which is not
sufficient.
4) Dysfunction of Traffic Signals
The given traffic lights and other signals don’t work properly
whereas these lights are the main component of traffic
control device.
It is found by a study that 70% of the roads of dhaka city
has automatic functioned traffic lights but most of them
don’t work according to need.
11. 5) Manual Control of road junctions
Rather than automatic control, the junctions
or crossings of roads are being controlled
manually by traffic police. Even though traffic
police is usually present at every nodes or
intersections, they do not do their duties
properly. Traffic rules are also very flexible.
One can easily avoid the fine by giving bribe
to the police.
12. 6) More use of cars
2 cars can take the place of 1 bus and 1 bus can hold at
least 40 people but 2 cars hold only 4-5 persons in average
by a study. According to BRTA, the number of buses is 20534
whereas the number of Cars is 192623.

7)Unplanned Road design
Roads are not designed and constructed through proper
planning and engineering survey. Many roads are wide
enough in respect of its use but cannot use it properly due
to proper planning and lack of coordination of engineering
survey.
8) Less Educated Drivers
In our country the drivers are not that much educated in
general. That’s why they don’t understand the signals well
which makes them to break the law and congestion
happens.
13. 10) Less use of flyovers or interchanges
Though there are some flyovers and interchanges in the city but
due to some excessive toll, drivers are not encouraged to use
these. As a result congestion occurs at the bottom.
Example: Jatrabaari Flyover
11) Centralization in one city
Dhaka is the center of all works of Bangladesh. All the works are
done from here. That’s why people are coming more and more in
Dhaka. Density of population is creasing, so is the congestions
14. 12) Illegal and Roadside parking of vehicles
Illegal and Roadside parking is one of the causes of traffic
congestion. It ultimately narrow down the effective road width
of the roads to a great extent. These on-streets parking system
cause traffic congestion in that particular road.

17. 13) Educational institutions inside the city
There are a lots of educational institutions inside the busy areas
of this city. It causes a lots of people to travel frequently inside
the city and increases the congestions.
14) Street shops and hawkers
Street vendors, Hawkers and street front shop owners occupy
above 60% of the 163-km footpaths of Dhaka City. The
sidewalks are also filled up by construction materials, garbage
or even temporary houses of homeless people or beggars.

19. Unfortunately YES……….
The main cause of traffic jam is the ignorance, not abiding
by the traffic rules and less awareness of our people and
government.
The day we’ll wake up, the nation will also be. And that
day all problems of BANGLADESH might be solved too.
