Abortion is a serious ethical dilemma. The practice is not a recent one, there being evidence of the
procedure dating back several millennia and neither is the controversy that comes with it, with records
of laws regulating abortion appearing in texts and manuscripts from a range of civilizations
throughout the years. There has been much debate over whether abortion is a morally sound practice,
and the divisive nature of the issue has resulted in centuries of contention. Many notable figures and
organizations have made use of numerous religious, legal, and ethical standpoints to develop positions
for and against abortion. This essay will be taking a look at abortion through the lens of two normative
ethical theories: Utilitarianism and Deontology, as understood through John Stuart Mill s
Utilitarianism and Immanuel Kant s Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals respectively.
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that claims that the best action one can perform is the one that
brings about the most pleasure, happiness or utility. Utilitarianism is extremely consequentialist in
nature, focusing solely on the results of one s actions and not on intentions or other notions of ideas
such as justice or humanity. There are two main branches of utilitarianism: act utilitarianism and rule
utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism essentially states that whether an action is right or wrong depends on
its particular consequences. Rule utilitarianism states that whether an action is right or wrong depends
in part on similar actions, and how those actions promote pleasure/happiness. Rule utilitarianism came
about as a response to criticisms of act utilitarianism, which claimed act utilitarianism was not feasible
as an ethical theory in that it would be impossible to make decisions that actually promote the greatest
utility in every instance one is required to act. Rule utilitarians believe that instead of making an
individual judgement and decision based on anticipated utility when faced with a situation, it would be
better to establish general rules to follow that, when followed, typically reap the greatest utility. Both

When I read The Reunion, immediately I was introduced to the character of Hans Schwarz. He was
introduced as being bored, as he was, Half asleep, doodling and daydreaming. (2) I saw him as being a
typical bored boy that you would see in any classroom in America. When Konradin entered the
picture, I immediately saw a difference in Hanz. He was suddenly very attentive and alert, noticing
things that other boys may not have been paying attention to. Hans noticed how Konradin organized
his pencils, and how elegant and polite he was (2). When Hans decides that he wants to become
friends with Konradin, you see him suddenly become very determined and motivated. He is now
participating in class, and doing so well that people who had thought nothing of him before, took a
new interest. The results startled my teachers. They turned to me with a new hope and a touching joy.

him as well. I saw that he had a strength of character and determination that was different from other
