Nathaniel Hawthorne s Influence On American Literature...
Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the most important authors in the history of American literature and
the genre of Romanticism or Dark Romanticism, due to his unique style of writing and his focus upon
subjects of Puritan religion and the unknown. I consider Hawthorne an important author, due to the
fact that he skillfully and accurately based his fictional writings upon happenings of colonial times,
was one of the first authors to display unfortunate outcomes for his characters immoral choices
according to Puritan beliefs, and wrote of things that were considered taboo in his time, such as
witchcraft, scientific innovation and experimentation. I strongly believe that Hawthorne s influence
for his writings were his Puritan ancestral background, his fascination with Puritan beliefs, and his
interest in what was considered the unknown such as witchcraft and science. According to the Norton
Anthology Textbook Vol. B, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804 (370).
Hawthorne belonged to a family whose ancestral roots were tied to Puritan history, with his family
being among the first settlers of Massachusetts and having one of his relatives serve as a judge during
the Salem witch trials (370). Hawthorne, as a young boy, had a particular interest in writings such as
John Bunyan s Puritan allegory The Pilgrim s Progress, and by his mid teens he took interest in British
novelists such as Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollet, William Godwin, and Sir Walter Scott

The Significance of Nazi Propaganda under Hitler s Rule Essay
The Significance of Nazi Propaganda under Hitler s Rule
The appointment of Adolf Hitler as chancellor of Germany in 1933 should, in theory, have been
nothing more than merely a change of administration. However, from the start of their seizure of
power the Nazis were prepared to apply this power in revolutionary ways. (Fest, 1974, p.373). In the
elections of 1933 that resulted in Hitler s chancellorship, the Nazi party only managed to gain 43.9%
of the vote; yet by 1939 they had the support of the majority of the German population. There has
been much debate during the last fifty years, questioning how Nazism managed not only to have
initially attained their power, but also, how they managed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Moreover, underlying all of these arguments is the existence of terror and repression within the regime
which cannot be ignored if attempting to ask why Hitler was able to maintain power from 1933 39.
Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Joseph Goebbels, the head of the newly formed Ministry
of Propaganda, stressed how important it was to centrally control propaganda. He said
It is not enough for people to be more or less reconciled to our regime, to be persuaded to adopt a
neutral attitude toward us; rather we want to work on people until they have capitulated to us, until
they grasp ideologically that what is happening in Germany today not only must be accepted but also
can be accepted. (Lee, 1998, p.33)
According to David Welch, Goebbels attempted to do this through four propaganda themes. Firstly
appeal to national unity and attempt to promote the idea of a people s community
(Volksgemeinschaft); secondly attempt to establish a Führer cult (Führerprinzip); thirdly, closely
linked with the idea of a people s community was the idea of a need to establish racial purity, and
finally propaganda would be used to direct hatred towards the Jews and the Bolsheviks (The Third
Reich Politics and Propaganda, 1995, p.52). Whilst all of these aims have a significant part to play

Wb Yeats Auden
W.H. Auden s intricate elegy In Memory of W.B. Yeats subtly honors W.B. Yeats, one of the most
famous poets of all time and a giant of 20th century English literature. Auden doesn t waste his time
romanticizing Yeats or his work, and his honest approach in separating the poems from the man makes
In Memory of W.B. Yeats a fittingly remarkable memorial for a celebrated author. Though it partially
acts as a criticism of Yeats, Auden s poem is ultimately a defense of why poetry, Yeats included, is
significant for humanity.
Auden opens In Memory of W.B. Yeats with a grand apocalyptic visual. He disappeared in the dead of
winter / The brooks were frozen, the airports almost deserted / And snow disfigured the public statues.
However, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You were silly like us; your gift survived it all / The parish of rich women, physical decay / Yourself...
Auden drags Yeats down from his poetic pedestal in a way that is both complimentary and insulting.
Yeats poems survive, despite himself and his flaws. Then the narrator slips to a reoccurring theme: the
limits of poetry. The following lines speak directly to Yeats ineffectual activism, mad Ireland hurt you
into poetry / Now Ireland has her madness and her weather still . This second section disparages Yeats,
an Irish nationalist, for believing that he could influence the political climate of his homeland through
poetry alone. That magnitude of social action is impossible, the poem emphasizes, For poetry makes
nothing happen . The last five lines of this section delve into what poetry is capable of, or more so
what poetry must do. He paints poetry as a vagrant, traveling From ranches of isolation and the busy
griefs / Raw towns that we believe and die in; it survives / A way of happening, a mouth. Auden s use
of the phrase it survives when referring to poetry recalls the first section, and he reaffirms that poetry s
persistence is dependent on its true power, its ability to be shared and exchanged, what he calls A way

Essay about Criminal Law Midterm
Midterm Criminal Law
State v. Doug
Homicide:
The unlawful taking of the life of one human being by another.
Actual Causation :
The defendant s act must have been the cause in fact of the victim s death. Without the defendant s
actions, the victim would not have died.
But for Doug shooting and killing Tom, he would not have died.
Proximate Causation:
A defendant s actions are the proximate cause of the victim s death if the result occurs as a
consequence of the defendant s act. There is no other casually connected act. The defendant s conduct
is the direct cause of the harm.
Doug was the sole causal agent, and he brought about Tom s death by shooting and killing him.
Therefore, Doug was the proximate cause of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Doug will be eligible for reduction to voluntary manslaughter.
Self Defense:
Self defense is a general right to defend oneself against the use of unlawful force. One may defend
oneself with deadly force only if the attacker threatens him with serious bodily harm.
Doug will contend that Tom threatened to beat him badly , and he was defending himself from serious
bodily harm. Doug believed that he was in imminent danger, had no way to retreat, and that the use of
deadly force was necessary to protect himself.
The Jury will have to decide if Doug s deadly force was excessive. Tom s words carry a threat of
serious bodily harm, but there was no unlawful force taken. Also, the jury will have to decide if Doug
was the initial aggressor.
Defense of Property:
Use of force to defend one s property or one s self from harm is justified.
A homeowner generally cannot use deadly force to defend his property. This is based on the judgment
that human life is more valuable than property.
Doug will argue that he was defending himself and his property and was acting in self defense.
Doug should be able to mitigate a charge of murder to voluntary manslaughter. Because there was no
unlawful force against Doug, self defense will most likely

The Puritan Religion’s Influence on Children Essay
While the current child considers their life to be stressful and busy, the children of the Puritan religion
had much more to be worried about, on top of all of their daily activities. The adults in the community
looked down upon the children that represented the devil and his works. Children were born with the
burden of Adam s sin, and they must be broken from sinning. By the time that the children were five,
they were put to work, to contribute to the family. Most children were small, and able to help with the
weeding of plants and house work. After an early morning work session, most children would attend
school. Schooling was very important to the Puritans because they believed that the devil would

The constant fear would be held above all s heads and cause the mentally weak, to go insane. Puritans
belief that God was the main controller meant that he would punish anyone who would do anything
that was sinful. They would not help anyone who had fallen sick or had a misfortune, because they
saw it as God s will. God was more powerful than anyone on Earth, and would punish the damn more
than any physical pain could. Children were the most susceptible to sinful nature because they were
seen as promiscuous (Discovery Education). In the Puritan Religion, all children were supposed to be
looked down upon, and hold no power. They were supposed to be closer to the devil than any adult, as
we could see during the Salem Witch Trials. Death by sin was also constant fear in the child s mind,
and the children were so afraid to sin, that they usually ended up sinning. Also, children lived with the
fear of not experiencing God for their memberships to the church. In this time, to be a citizen, you had
to be a member of the church. When the children of the elect were born, they were automatically given
membership to the church, because they were for surely experience God. When some of them did not,
they lived inconstant fear of what was to to come of them and their future children. The constant fears
and pressures of the Puritan child lead to problems within the community (Campbell). With the Bible

Silence Of The Lambs Film Techniques
2. One technique used in The Silence of the Lambs is cross cutting. The viewer is deliberately deceive
through clever cross cutting between an FBI team preparing to storm a house in Calumet City, Illinois,
and an absolutely livid Bill, thrashing through his basement after having discovered Catherine has
captured his precious poodle at the bottom of the well. It turns out the FBI has missed its mark and has
left Starling alone to face the killer. Playing on Kuleshov s effect, this film uses juxtaposition as a
false sense of security, almost teasing the viewer once we see the tremendous amount of danger
Starling has unknowingly put herself in. The climatic scene that follows has a number of important

with dark shadows and an onslaught of noises, including a dog s barks, Catherine s screams, the flutter

momentarily eliminated leaving Starling and the viewer in total darkness, creating a sense of dread
and mind numbing terror. It returns only once the viewer adopts Bill s point of view, casting his
images in the green of night vision goggles. The audience is put in the same helpless, naked position
as Starling. This returns to the age old commentary on voyeurism, how as viewers, we cannot warn

Femininity is under constant attack through the film s narrative. No better example exists than Starling
having to suffer the indignity of having semen tossed at her face by a mental patient. Starling s quest

Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie Essay
Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie
In horror films, there is always one scene that opens up the perceived realm of normality to that of fear
and confusion. Directors and authors alike use these scenes to show the change in the pace of the film.
In both the movie Psycho (1960) and Carrie (1976), shower scenes are used to mark this epic turning
point with sexuality, blood and voyeurism; the most important ingredients to horror.
The idea of sneaking around and peering into forbidden places gives just about everyone a thrill.
Voyeurism is used strongly in both Psycho and Carrie due to its ability to entice thrill in the viewer. In
Carrie, we start the scene by looking into a girls high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are then given an extreme close up of Norman s eye, staring wide into the room; the view we have
gives us the thrill of actually being there, watching Marion undress. This method of filming, giving the
audience the sight of the forbidden, adds thrill to the important scenes. Thrill only encourages us to
watch the movie more intently, on the edge of our seats.
Sexuality also adds a great deal of tension to the two scenes. We watch as Marion drops her robe to
the floor and steps gingerly into the shower. Once in the shower, we are given a point of view shot of
the showerhead, a huge showerhead covering her entire body with clean, warm water, cleansing her of
her sins in an almost baptismal way. We are allowed only collarbone up shots of her in the shower,
only hints to her nakedness. We can only imagine what she looks like, giving the audience the same
thoughts that raced through Norman s mind as he looked in on her through the peephole. Carrie is also
highly sexualized, more so given the fact that more nudity was allowed with the changing times. As
we gaze at the different close up camera shots of her body, we watch as she reaches for the soap. The
audience watches as she rubs soap all over her body in slow motion, her face complacent in both
peace and pleasure. Carrie then begins to rub her breasts and her inner thigh in a very

Summer Night, Riverside
The poem Summer Night, Riverside by Sara Teasdale, at first glance, appeared to be a poem full of
tenderness and admiration. While reading the piece, an image of two young lovers spending a night
together in a park formed in my mind. They spent time watching lights twinkle like golden spangles
(4) in the Hudson River, and the water shone like satin (5). The night seems to hold a romantic,
dreamlike aura. The description of the lights in the water as spangles (4) led me to think of jewelry,
which is precious, valuable and most often holds important meaning to he or she who owns that piece.
As I read through the piece several more times, a different feeling came to me. The speaker seems to
have a melancholy tone as the poem comes to a

Summary Of Abraham Lincoln sFraming Sustainability By...
In Framing Sustainability by David W. Orr took a historical known leader, Abraham Lincoln used him
to show how he thinks sustainability should be approached. Lincoln had to deal with a very
controversial topic as president, which was slavery, some people approved of it and others did not.
Like sustainability some people believe that is not important while others do. David felt like in some
sense both topics are controversial and have supporters and opposers that maybe if we approached the
topic of sustainability gently Like Lincoln did with slavery that more people would be open minded
and take into consideration that sustainability is truly important. Taking Lincolns approach and

Think about it, if something is constantly being told to a person it will stick with them, if there was
more awareness on sustainability like big campaigns like you on Tabaco on tv more people would pay
more attention. Also, not only having a clear message and attention of people but having a diverse
audience is a very big key too.
Having a diverse audience is always necessary; being able to have all people being able to relate the
topic of discussion. To have a diverse audience one must have some relatable factors and or make sure
they use language that is common and is not too vague. In the text Lincoln built his case from sources
familiar to his audience the Declaration of Independence, the constitution, and bible Lincoln
referenced historical documents the Declaration of Independence granted the thirteen colonies
freedom from Great Britain and the Constitution sets up the government and creates the three branches
of government along with checks and balances. Then the bible is a religious book that Christians refer
to and Christian was a popular religion the United States at the time and especially in the south
considering that south was known as the Bible Belt so using the bible as a common factor to get
people s attention was a wise move but Lincoln did not make them the focus point. But dealing with
sustainability what would be a common factor to

the most closets animal to humans are chimpanzee. The homo erectus was significantly close to us in

Diamond doesn t believe it because he need more proof or fossil evidence. Only reason that this
explanation fail to express why Eurasia became advance earlier than Africa when they had a head
start.
. In the chapter called A Natural Experiment of History the Moriori and Maori both descended from
the Polynesian people. The question that Diamond is trying to answer is what made the two group so
different from each other because they came from the same people. The Moriori were hunter gathers
of a small isolated population that were equipped with only simply technology and weapons. They
were inexperienced at war. Also lacked strong leadership in order to take care of their group. But the
Maori invader (from New Zealand s North Island) came from large population of famers. The farmers
in Maori constantly engaged in wars, more advanced in technology and weapon. Maori operated under
a strong leadership. There is no hesitation that when the two group came in contact Maori would had
destroyed the Moriori. On the other hand since the Maori and Moriori descended from the same race
cannot defend why one group was more advance over the other. It was the environmental and
geographical factors that caused Maori to advance more. For example, Chatham is very small and

Value Of Life In To Be Or Not To Be
Value of Life
Considering the value of our own or someone else s life is a difficult topic to talk about considering
the fact that every one views it differently. Some view life as a priceless gift that we as people should
cherish, while others can only see the value of someone s life in dollar signs. Every life is valuable no
matter what you come from, every life has value. Hamlet has pessimistic view on life, which he
consistently shows in his speech To Be or Not to Be. Throughout his speech, he goes back and forth
between the appeal of life and the peace he thinks he will find in death. To grunt and sweat under a

of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter (p. 32). Ebert always valued his life even

who supported and stood by him throughout his life. Amanda Ripley, author of What Is a Life Worth?

government. After 9/11 the families of the victims received compensation for the death of their loved

of the victim s life was worth. If one man only made $22,000 a year he received a smaller

Biometric Technology in Verifying a Person s Identity Essay
1. Introduction
The process of verifying a person s identity, also called authentication, plays an important role in
various areas of everyday life. Any situation with user interaction where the identity is required needs
a means to verify the claimed identity. One of the more obvious and commonly known application
areas for identity verifying technologies, i.e. authentication, is the Logical Access Control to computer
systems, where authenticity is normally established by confirming aclaimed identity with a secret
password or PIN code.Traditional methods of confirming the identity of an unknown person rely
either upon some secret knowledge (such as a PIN or password) or upon an object the person

A Study Interview On Relationship Between Education And...
Holding the idea of collaboration in policy making, Tell, (2012) through the study interview in relation
to education quality, teachers applauded the value of teachers and students participation in educational
policy making as one of the components of education boosts. While asserting their point, teachers
pinpointed that:
[...T] he answer to [the] quality of education is largely laid within their jurisdiction. The government
and other stakeholders can put forward all theories to improve education but that will just be another
merry go round, because we (teachers) and our students are the only group of stakeholders who have
the genuine answer. (Telli, 2012, p) Again teachers bring into attention the idea of what Sahlberg,
(2007) called the culture of trust simply, a situation where people with high authority in education
trust other groups such as principals, parents and their communities, who have the quest of providing
the unsurpassed education for their children and youth (p, 157). In general, the primary idea of shared
policy making, expands further than teachers, students, or parents to include multidisciplinary groups.
Perhaps Choi, Pak, (2006) put it clear that: The objectives of multiple corrective approaches can

Because we are in multiple locations and the need to track employee hours we have implemented an
IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system for time and attendance. Interactive Voice Response is a
technology that automates interaction with telephone callers. Our organization has digital T1 lines.
These lines are connected on one side to the IVR platform and, on the other, to call switching
equipment. Our have IVR Applications (programs that control and respond to calls on the IVR
platform) prompt callers and gather input. These applications call on existing databases and
application servers to retrieve records and information required during the length of a call. The IVR
scripts are designed using Visual IVR Script designer. Visual IVR allows fast and easy design of the
IVR system. Visual IVR Script Designer is easy to learn, and allows a GUI for the entire IVR
development process. Event Handlers link the modules to one another depending on the tone keys the
caller pressed.

Sectional Differences
In the early mid nineteen century United States began to split, people s views started to become more
concrete and irreconcilable, thus the separation of the Union became more drastic. From 1850 to 1861
it was apparent that the union was separating into North and the South. They both developed different
patterns of life and philosophies of government. Increase in population due to immigration and
territorial expansion caused growth and change. Several reform movements attempted to correct the
injustices and bring the United States back together, but sectional differences formed, leading to a
Civil War. There were several events that took place within the fifteen years leading up to the Civil
War, however, in the end, the sectional differences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The North was blessed with an abundance of natural resources and a growing population which led to
industrialization. This caused an increase in immigrants and no more demand for slavery. In the South
the fertile soil and the hot temperature made it ideal for farming and growing crops like cotton and
tobacco. Since agriculture was so profitable Southerners didn t really see a need for industrial
development. This meant that their whole society was completely based on farming and on slaves
doing the work. The North and South differences didn t just involve slavery but it also included
cultural, economic, political, and power differences. A major disputation between the two sides was
whether the new territories and states should have legalized slavery. Northerners worried that if
slavery crept northward, slaves would take jobs that white workers might otherwise be hired to do. In
contrast, Southerners had a lifestyle and economy supported by slave labor, and they worried that free
states and territories abutting slave states might harbor fugitive slaves and negatively influence the
institution of slavery. Both sides were concerned about the balance of power and that Congress might

Organizational Behavior And Organizational Behaviour
The above drawn figure shows about organisational behaviour. It highlights the bonding among
human behaviour in organizational settings, the individual organization interface, the organization, the
environment surrounding the organization. In an organization each and every individual brings its own
experience, managerial and effective skills.
Classical Organizational theory: Popovich (2010) said that in this theory, the concentration mainly
goes in how an organization can be structured in effective manner. These three are believed to be
major contributors of organization theory, Henri Fayol, Lyndall Urwick Max Weber. But they all given
same form of structure which was Bureaucratic. Organizational behaviour plays an integral role in
organization s progress, economic growth, and productive results .
Those people who work in organization, they are literally born in there educated in organizations.
They also learn and grab most of their material possessions from organizations and die as members of
organizations. Majority of our activities are regulated by organizations, called governments. Most
adults spend their better part of life working in organizations (Roberts, 2006).
Task no.1.1: Sum up the Leadership Theories: Definition of leadership leader , shows great influence
and bonding with its theories. It is an ability of leader how he influence a group towards the
achievement of a vision or set of goals. Leadership is also about coping with change. Leaders

Ancient Egyptian Greek and Roman Stele Essay
Ancient Egyptian Greek and Roman Stele Just as we use tombstones to mark graves and
commemorate our dead, so too did ancient civilizations. One way to do so in the ancient world was
through the use of steles. A stele is a stone slab, usually decorated in relief and inscribed, that honored
the death of a person. Three of the ancient cultures that had implemented the use of the stele were the
Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. In comparing an example from each civilization, it is possible to see
the evolution of the stele from one period to another and the different influences each civilization had
on a single element.
The Egyptians had many ways to honor their dead, including the stele. Wealthy Egyptians, especially

The Greek grave markers of the 3rd 1st century BCE are almost wholly restricted to the East Greek
World. The most common type is tall, with architectural elements, and a big figure of the deceased
with small attendants. Another type, a short and broad rectangle, depicts the deceased at a feast the
Death Feast or Totenmahl reliefs. (Rothermel 354)
The Western Asia Minor Funerary Stele is one Greek stele that falls under these distinctions.
(University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology) It is from Asia Minor (part
of the East Greek World) during the 1st century BCE. It shows the deceased, a man, lying on a dining
couch under an arch. He is leaning on his left elbow and holds up a funerary wreath with the right
hand. It is said that the woman on the left is his wife. She appears to be thinking, probably of her dead
husband. There are also two attendants, one on either side of the arch, and a table in front of the
deceased loaded with food. This stele has all the distinct characteristics (mentioned previously) of the
grave markers from the eastern part of the Greek Empire. The architectural elements (the arch), an
image of the deceased (the man on the couch), the broad rectangular shape of the stele, and the Death
Feast are all present within this stele. (Rothermel 354)
Since this stele was created during the Hellenistic period, it has the

Lactose Intolerant People Research Paper
HELP FOR LACTOSE INTOLERANT PEOPLE
Who is a lactose intolerant person? This is a person who cannot digest lactose when ingested into his
body. How do you know that you are lactose intolerant? If you take fresh dairy products and diarrhoea
or get stomach upsets like bloating, pain, or cramps, regurgitation, flatulence, or gas, borborygmi
rumbling and gurgling in the stomach, nausea sometimes accompanied by vomiting, you could most
likely be a victim.
All is not lost if you still like dairy products, only in this case you may need to take tem in a different
state.
Milk has several components although many people take it as a source of protein, well it has 3.5%
protein but more than that it has a 2 8% of carbohydrates which majorly is lactose or what we call
milk sugar. This is what that gives the fresh milk a sweet taste.
In the digestion process, carbohydrates are digested from the mouth by the enzyme by salivary
amylase, in the stomach there isn t much further break down until when it gets to the small intestines.
Every sugar requires its enzyme to digest it, for example maltose requires maltase so lactose requires
lactase. Lactase enzyme is naturally produced by cells in the small intestine lining; it breaks lactose
into its simple sugars which are glucose and galactose. It cannot be absorbed in its complex state. ...

wears off in some people as they grow older, mostly from the age of six. Premature babies may have

lactose intolerance in some people all together, though rare it cannot be ruled out. There are other
factors that can cause intolerance of fresh milk as well as fresh dairy products, these include

Essay On Global Competitiveness
Global Competitiveness: Role of Supply chain Management
Business today is in a global environment. This environment forces companies, regardless of location
or primary market base, to consider the rest of the world in their competitive strategy analysis. Firms
cannot isolate themselves from or ignore external factors such as economic trends, competitive
situations or technology innovation in other countries, if some of their competitors are competing or
are located in those countries. Companies are going truly global with Supply chain Management
(SCM). A company can develop a product in the United States, manufacture in India and sell in

The ultimate objective of SCM is to achieve a strategic fit between the company s competitive
strategy and supply chain strategy. This strategic fit can be achieved by Understanding the customer
demand, which helps the company to define costs and service requirements and understanding the
supply chain that helps the company to design and manage its supply chain in accordance with the
customer s demand. If any mismatch exists between what the supply chain is capable of doing with
respect to customer demands, the company can either alter the structure of the supply chain design or
alter its strategies.
During the industrial age, companies succeeded by how well they could capture the benefit from
economies of scale and scope technology. The success accrued to companies that could embed the
new technology into physical asset that offered efficient customer service. The emergence of the
retailing era, which stared in the last decades of twentieth century, made obsolete many of the

Fascism and Nazism Rise
During World War Two, the Axis powers were ran by two different kinds of government ideas. In
Germany the government was Nazism raised by their leader Adolf Hitler. In Italy there was Fascism
ruled by their leader Benito Mussolini. Fascism and Nazism appealed to the people because how they
were living during the time the two came to power. The two main reasons that made them so
appealing were the nationalistic feeling which rose in people and the feeling of a better lifestyle during
economic troubles. These different strategies of government presented false promises to desperate
people.
Fascism was widely practiced in Italy after World War One and during World War Two. The leader
credited for the idea of fascism in Italy was Benito Mussolini. Fascism is described as a radical

Analysis of Henrik Ibsen s Hedda Gabler
The unmistakable dominance of men during the nineteenth century is an influential factor in the
establishment of the central theme of Henrik Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler. Due to Hedda s lack of
independence, she develops a strong desire for control. The direct relationship between Hedda s
marriage with George and her sly, manipulative characteristics is manifested by Ibsen during the work.
Ibsen also exposes weakness in Mrs. Elvsted through her dependability on various male characters for
fulfillment in life. How do expectations of gender roles in the nineteenth century affect plot scheme
and develop a theme of male dominance in Henrik Ibsen s Hedda Gabler? Deeper insight to this
connection may be formed from the analysis of various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elvsted share for each other. The loss of the manuscript, after Hedda destroys it in a fit of raging
jealousy, signifies the death of Eilert and Mrs. Elvsted s child, as well as their relationship. The
catastrophe is too much for Eilert to handle, and Mrs. Elvsted fails to offer a voice of comfort.
Consequently, he takes his own life and destroys Mrs. Elvsted s hope for the future. Her dependency
on her first husband for financial support and then on her true love, Lövborg, for a sensation of self
worth reflects the view of women s helplessness during the nineteenth century. The static character
traits displayed through Mrs. Elvsted s constant reliance on male figures also illustrate the lack of
progress being made by women of the time. Ibsen s creation of female inferiority through Mrs.
Elvsted s failure of independence supports the preconceived notion of male dominance. In addition,
the shy personality traits given to Mrs. Elvsted effectively create a timid female character with
weaknesses regarding self esteem. The submissive statements from Mrs. Elvsted s conversations with
other characters exploit these weaknesses and allow other characters, such as Hedda, to take
advantage of them. Consequently, these opportunities for manipulation dictate Hedda s actions and
also the scheme of the plot. Commonly accepted terms representing informality and casualty to a

The Visual Adisement Of An Advert Analysis Of Tux Soap
The visual text about the Tux Soap is an advertisement created to convince women that using Tux
Soap for their body will improve their complexion and make them appear more visually appealing. It
is targeted at women, aged between thirteen to fifty because society seems to demand that it is
essential for women to look extraordinarily beautiful and have flawless skin. The advertisement
appeals to the targeted audience as the beautiful woman on the advertisement with flawless skin
entices young and older women to want to try Tux soap.
Visual techniques evident in advertisement include the title, which conveys the message that Most
men ask Is she pretty? Not Is she clever? . The title misleads women by persuading them that men
only look at aspects of beauty but not intelligence or kindness. However, it is extremely effective as
women will be attracted to the advertisement in how they can allow their beauty to be seen and would
want to read more into it. Furthermore, the dull background colours such as the light blue and grey
shades make the woman s flawless skin and her fair complexion appear more prominent and appealing
to the eye, satisfying the audience. Moreover, the advertisement includes a larger size for the words,
Most men ask Is she pretty? and a smaller size is utilised for not Is she clever? this differentiation
convinces the audience that being prettier is more important than being clever. It makes us sense that
beauty is more powerful than intelligence.

Western Views On Human Nature
Eastern Human Nature In our quest for wisdom, the question of human nature is still up to debate.
Many philosophers ranging from Socrates to Buddha has questioned the nature of human life and of
our existence. But these philosophers do not share the same beliefs about our nature. Their beliefs are
as different as their place of origin. Socrates own philosophy may not be the same as an eastern
philosopher such as the Buddha. In western philosophy there is often a focus on the individual in the
case of human nature. In eastern philosophy there are various interpretations of the idea of human
nature and our existence.
In buddhism the goal is to reach Nibbana, enlightenment. TO reach enlightenment one would,
according to Buddhist belief, is to get rid of beliefs that stem from ourselves and reality. The Four
Noble Truths represents the realities of nature that cannot be denied. The first truth is that life is
suffering. Meaning that to live is to suffer, it is not to say that the entirety of life is to suffer, but that
suffering is a part of life. The second truth is the desire for what is liable to birth, impurity, decay, and
death. All examples of suffering as a part of the normal course of life. The third truth is that the
elimination of the desire, as told by the second truth, eliminates suffering. Simply saying that by
removing these desires one also removes the origin of suffering. The fourth noble truth is that to

In the acute care setting of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), more than 500,000 patients die nationwide
each year in the US (Nowlin, 2004). An increased surge in patient demand for skilled critical care
services, caused by an extended life expectancy due to advances in healthcare, has put an enormous
strain on critical care. In many cases the availability of technology can make the difference between
life and death for a patient. In addition to providing an extra set of eyes to monitor patients, and
streamlining collaboration among healthcare provider, the introduction of the virtual ICU (vICU)

Examples Of Determinism In Arrival
Determinism and Free Will in Arrival
If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things? This is one of the
heaviest hitting questions in the movie Arrival and it serves as the philosophical launching point for
my discussion here. This question comes from the main character Louise directed at her future
husband. As the movie progresses, we as viewers learn that the main character Louise has been given
the ability to see into the future. Part of these visions include the death of her future daughter to a rare
disease at a young age. Yet, even though she can see these events of the future and even though she
knows of the pain and suffering they will bring, she still chooses to follow the same course of her life
because she recognizes some type of greater purpose. It is through the actions and decisions of Louise
that this movie explicitly explores the notion of whether knowledge of future events would affect or
negate our concept of free will as human beings. Like Ted Chiang s short story entitled The Story of
You Life that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rowlands discusses this in Chapter 9 of his book and he argues that this concept allows us to
understand what it means to be a human being and how we are to achieve authenticity in our lives.
Namely, this type of thinking causes us to live in the light of our death. To do so, we require a
different understanding of time, one that transcends our standard linear notions of a past, present, and
future. By having a being towards death understanding, we begin to see everything in relation to the
now. This understanding applies directly to our understanding of our mortality. As finite beings, this
mindset makes us confront our finite nature and creates a sense of meaning through the reality of
death. It is through this realization that we find our meaning and true

  • 2. Nathaniel Hawthorne s Influence On American Literature... Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the most important authors in the history of American literature and the genre of Romanticism or Dark Romanticism, due to his unique style of writing and his focus upon subjects of Puritan religion and the unknown. I consider Hawthorne an important author, due to the fact that he skillfully and accurately based his fictional writings upon happenings of colonial times, was one of the first authors to display unfortunate outcomes for his characters immoral choices according to Puritan beliefs, and wrote of things that were considered taboo in his time, such as witchcraft, scientific innovation and experimentation. I strongly believe that Hawthorne s influence for his writings were his Puritan ancestral background, his fascination with Puritan beliefs, and his interest in what was considered the unknown such as witchcraft and science. According to the Norton Anthology Textbook Vol. B, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804 (370). Hawthorne belonged to a family whose ancestral roots were tied to Puritan history, with his family being among the first settlers of Massachusetts and having one of his relatives serve as a judge during the Salem witch trials (370). Hawthorne, as a young boy, had a particular interest in writings such as John Bunyan s Puritan allegory The Pilgrim s Progress, and by his mid teens he took interest in British novelists such as Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollet, William Godwin, and Sir Walter Scott ... • 4. The Significance of Nazi Propaganda under Hitler s Rule Essay The Significance of Nazi Propaganda under Hitler s Rule The appointment of Adolf Hitler as chancellor of Germany in 1933 should, in theory, have been nothing more than merely a change of administration. However, from the start of their seizure of power the Nazis were prepared to apply this power in revolutionary ways. (Fest, 1974, p.373). In the elections of 1933 that resulted in Hitler s chancellorship, the Nazi party only managed to gain 43.9% of the vote; yet by 1939 they had the support of the majority of the German population. There has been much debate during the last fifty years, questioning how Nazism managed not only to have initially attained their power, but also, how they managed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, underlying all of these arguments is the existence of terror and repression within the regime which cannot be ignored if attempting to ask why Hitler was able to maintain power from 1933 39. Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Joseph Goebbels, the head of the newly formed Ministry of Propaganda, stressed how important it was to centrally control propaganda. He said It is not enough for people to be more or less reconciled to our regime, to be persuaded to adopt a neutral attitude toward us; rather we want to work on people until they have capitulated to us, until they grasp ideologically that what is happening in Germany today not only must be accepted but also can be accepted. (Lee, 1998, p.33) According to David Welch, Goebbels attempted to do this through four propaganda themes. Firstly appeal to national unity and attempt to promote the idea of a people s community (Volksgemeinschaft); secondly attempt to establish a Führer cult (Führerprinzip); thirdly, closely linked with the idea of a people s community was the idea of a need to establish racial purity, and finally propaganda would be used to direct hatred towards the Jews and the Bolsheviks (The Third Reich Politics and Propaganda, 1995, p.52). • 5. Wb Yeats Auden W.H. Auden s intricate elegy In Memory of W.B. Yeats subtly honors W.B. Yeats, one of the most famous poets of all time and a giant of 20th century English literature. Auden doesn t waste his time romanticizing Yeats or his work, and his honest approach in separating the poems from the man makes In Memory of W.B. Yeats a fittingly remarkable memorial for a celebrated author. Though it partially acts as a criticism of Yeats, Auden s poem is ultimately a defense of why poetry, Yeats included, is significant for humanity. Auden opens In Memory of W.B. Auden drags Yeats down from his poetic pedestal in a way that is both complimentary and insulting. Yeats poems survive, despite himself and his flaws. Then the narrator slips to a reoccurring theme: the limits of poetry. The following lines speak directly to Yeats ineffectual activism, mad Ireland hurt you into poetry / Now Ireland has her madness and her weather still . This second section disparages Yeats, an Irish nationalist, for believing that he could influence the political climate of his homeland through poetry alone. That magnitude of social action is impossible, the poem emphasizes, For poetry makes nothing happen . The last five lines of this section delve into what poetry is capable of, or more so what poetry must do. He paints poetry as a vagrant, traveling From ranches of isolation and the busy griefs / Raw towns that we believe and die in; it survives / A way of happening, a mouth. Auden s use of the phrase it survives when referring to poetry recalls the first section, and he reaffirms that poetry s persistence is dependent on its true power, its ability to be shared and exchanged, what he calls A way of happening, a ... The Puritan Religion’s Influence on Children Essay While the current child considers their life to be stressful and busy, the children of the Puritan religion had much more to be worried about, on top of all of their daily activities. The adults in the community looked down upon the children that represented the devil and his works. Children were born with the burden of Adam s sin, and they must be broken from sinning. By the time that the children were five, they were put to work, to contribute to the family. Most children were small, and able to help with the weeding of plants and house work. God was more powerful than anyone on Earth, and would punish the damn more than any physical pain could. Children were the most susceptible to sinful nature because they were seen as promiscuous (Discovery Education). In the Puritan Religion, all children were supposed to be looked down upon, and hold no power. They were supposed to be closer to the devil than any adult, as we could see during the Salem Witch Trials. Death by sin was also constant fear in the child s mind, and the children were so afraid to sin, that they usually ended up sinning. Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie Essay Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie In horror films, there is always one scene that opens up the perceived realm of normality to that of fear and confusion. Directors and authors alike use these scenes to show the change in the pace of the film. In both the movie Psycho (1960) and Carrie (1976), shower scenes are used to mark this epic turning point with sexuality, blood and voyeurism; the most important ingredients to horror. The idea of sneaking around and peering into forbidden places gives just about everyone a thrill. Sexuality also adds a great deal of tension to the two scenes. We watch as Marion drops her robe to the floor and steps gingerly into the shower. Once in the shower, we are given a point of view shot of the showerhead, a huge showerhead covering her entire body with clean, warm water, cleansing her of her sins in an almost baptismal way. We are allowed only collarbone up shots of her in the shower, only hints to her nakedness. We can only imagine what she looks like, giving the audience the same thoughts that raced through Norman s mind as he looked in on her through the peephole. Carrie is also highly sexualized, more so given the fact that more nudity was allowed with the changing times. As we gaze at the different close up camera shots of her body, we watch as she reaches for the soap. The audience watches as she rubs soap all over her body in slow motion, her face complacent in both peace and pleasure. Carrie then begins to rub her breasts and her inner thigh in a very ... Having a diverse audience is always necessary; being able to have all people being able to relate the topic of discussion. To have a diverse audience one must have some relatable factors and or make sure they use language that is common and is not too vague. Northerners worried that if slavery crept northward, slaves would take jobs that white workers might otherwise be hired to do.
