3. Introduction
For the importance of building our country, we need to rely on
ourselves, and think creatively in a different way, especially
after the current situations that Qatar is passing through. So
we participated in AlBairaq to learn and express our ideas.
The topic we learned about was Composite materials. And
here we are ‘l’escalier’ group presenting our work..
(l’esclaier is a French word that means the stairs and we
decided to choose this name to climb up the stair of
knowledge and take our country to the top).
4. Activity 1: Testing Different kinds of Ice
This activity compares between the strength of ice
when it is normal, than when it is composite.
Sample A: Ice
Sample B: Ice+ tissue
Sample C: Ice+ tissue+ (gauze, foam pieces, super glue)
5. Activity 1: Testing Different kinds of Ice
Sample CSample BSample A
1321Number of throws
222Number of broken pieces
Sample { B }Sample { A } Sample { C}
Composite material gives different properties than the properties of
each material individually .
So we noticed that ice reinforced by paper fibers is stronger than
pure ice.
6. Activity 2: Hunting for Composite Materials.
• Objectives :
Search and hunt for a composite material
around us.
7. Activity 2: Hunting for Composite Materials.
We searched deeply about composite materials around us, and we found out that a
bed is a composite material, specifically a Laminar composite.
First of all, a bed should be strong, stiff, and comfortable. So a bed is usually made of
wood to be strong and stiff, it should bear a big amount of weight.
Still, it needs to be comfortable, so different layers are added to the wooden piece,
the first layer is a spongy mattress, and its made of steel coils, memory foam,
polyurethane or latex foam.
Then comes another layer which is a colorful sheet usually made of cotton, it gives a
soft surface. Then the blanket has cotton inside, it is light weight and a good insulator
of heat, the outside cover of the blanket is also smooth and colorful (usually made of
cotton).
All those materials were added together in different ways to make a new useful bed
that we can't live without.
8. Activity 3: Testing a Foam Composite for
Strength and Stiffness.
Objective:
Measure the amount of bearing of each material including the
difference in each sample and the number of supporting layers that
we add on it.
Tools :
1- foam (× 3)
2- ruler ( 1 meter )
3- pins
4- adhesive tape
5- pillar
6- weight measuring device
7- weights
8- supporting tool ( for setting the samples )

Conclusion :
When we add a supporting material to the foam
it become stronger and unable to be dragged
or pulled .
And by this activity we became sure that
sometimes when we add different materials
together we produce a new material with a new
qualities that are better.
10. Activity 4: Exploring the Difference Between
Strength and Stiffness.
• Objective: To observe and test the strength
and stiffness of each material
• Tools :
1- nylon
2- steel rod
3- wood
4- plastic
5- pasta ( spaghetti )
11. Activity 4: Exploring the Difference Between
Strength and Stiffness.
Our expectations
materials strength stiffness
Pasta Steel rod Nylon rod
Wood rod Wood rod Plastic rod
Steel rod Plastic rod Pasta
Plastic rod pasta Wood rod
Nylon rod Nylon rod Steel rod
Correct order
materials strength stiffness
Pasta Steel rod Nylon rod
Wood rod Nylon rod Pasta
Steel rod Plastic rod Wood rod
Plastic rod Wood rod Plastic rod
Nylon rod Pasta Steel rod
Conclusion :
Strength is : power to resist
force .
Stiffness is : the quality of
being firm and difficult to
bend or move.
Strength:
The highest material was the
steel rod , and the least was
the pasta.
Stiffness:
The highest material was the
nylon rod , and least was the
steel rod .
12. Design Project: Designing a Fishing Pole
Objective : In this activity we had to design a fishing pole
which is strong, flexible, light-weight.
Tools:
1- straws
2- cotton
3- tape
4- nylon roll
5- aluminum roll
6- pins
7-plastic roll
13. Design Project: Designing a Fishing Pole
• Conclusion :
The fishing pole was strong , light weight and
flexible.
We repeated designing the fishing pole to fix the
problems.
15. Final Project:
(KIDFREE ROOMS)
• Main problem:
Most mothers suffer from a big problem witch is cleaning behind their
kids the problem when you see their scribbles everywhere in the
furniture, that’s why we decided to design a beautiful, colorful,
waterproof, easy cleaning, flexible, extensible, tensile and safe cover to
help both mothers and kids .
• Objectives:
Designing a cover for the kids room furniture that helps
Children to get their freedom for their imaginations by
drawing freely on furniture with the ability of being
removed . Add to that , this cover will be waterproof that it help mothers and
house maids cleaning the rooms and keeping the whole house clean and tidy
16. KIDFREE ROOMS
Hypothesis
• We can match between children’s riot and arranging the house.
• That when we add latex ,Fluoropolymers and polyflon and mix them
together we get a new material that has different characteristics from the
first materials.
• We can use natural materials that are available to find everywhere such
as Lemon and White vinegar which help us to produce a material with the
ability of being easy removed after writing .
• The material we used is waterproof , easy formed with the furniture ,
colorful , tensile and safe for the children .
17. KIDFREE ROOMS
Methods and Materials
we used some materials like :
1-Fluoropolymers (( waterproof material ))
2-polyflon (( flexible material))
3- latex material ((shiny rubber ))
4- White vinegar
• What we created is a safe cover for the kids, the cover doesn't
allow water to pass through, so it protects the furniture. The cover
also gives the children the ability to express their imagination
freely on the furniture with the ability of getting rid of the
scribbles easily. This will raise our country's name high, and using
this invention will make children more creative and productive to
build the society.
18. • The final product is featured by waterproof specialty and the ability of
being easy cleaned adding to that the ability of being suitable with the
furniture .
• All the hypothesis that we put were correct except the hypothesis of
using the lemon to remove the children’s scribble from the furniture
because the lemon is less effective compared to the white vinegar that is
really functional.
• Our product was successful with 60% only , but we had to apply it on the
real life , and that didn’t happen because of shortage of time.
KIDFREE ROOMS
Results:
19. • We recommend using our product because of the benefits that helps
both housewives and children keeping the house tidy without
suppressing the children and allowing them to discover their world with
all pleasure.
• We request from managers to help us developing our project to make
new patterns that fit with the children’s tendencies and maintain them.
• We request the government to help us spread our project in all markets
so it can be available to find easily as well as publishing it everywhere so
it can be reached worldwide with low cost and perfect texture.
