Composite Module :Students discover what composite materials are and test them to learn their advantages over pure materials. Finally, at the end of the workshop, they design new composite materials.
Rust occurs due to electrochemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen. Rusting, the formation of iron oxides is a well-known example of electrochemical corrosion. This type of damage typically produces oxide(s) or salt(s) of the original metal. Corrosion degrades the useful properties of materials and structures including strength, appearance and permeability to liquids and gases.
What we offer in our product is an innovative solution for rust resistance. We prevent iron from rusting or at least minimize the amount of corrosion formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture by using safe and very cheap materials.

3. Introduction
Whatâs the meaning of composites ?
Composites are materials made up
of two or more visibly distinct
substances.
Composites have three categories :
1. particular composites
2. Laminar composites
3 .Fiberâreinforced composites
4. Activity1 : Testing different kinds of ice
Sample (A) was pure ice
and sample (B) was ice
mixed with paper fiber. In
sample (C) we mixed many
different substances.
5. Activity 1 : Results
Pure ice broke easily but ice mixed with paper
fibers didnât.
The reason: is that cracks that form in the ice are
blunted by the fibers so ice becomes stronger.
6. Activity 2: Hunting for composite materials.
There're 2
types of
composites
Natural
composites
Synthetic
composites

8. Activity 3: Exploring difference between strength and stiffness.
Strength : is s measure of the
force needed to break
something or to cause it to
crimp or otherwise fail.
Stiffness : is a measure of how
much a material will deform,
bend, or stretch
when a load (some weight) is
placed on it or hung from it.
9. We noticed the difference in
strength and stiffness between :
steal rod, wooden rod, pasta,
polyester rope and plastic rod.
Activity 3 : Ranking materials for strength and stiffness
10. Activity 3 : Results
Materials from strongest to weakest: steal
rod, polyester rope, plastic rod, wooden
rod, pasta.
Materials from most flexible to stiffest:
polyester rope, plastic rod, steal rod,
wooden rod, pasta.
11. Activity 4: Testing a foam composite for strength and stiffness.
Sample (A) : plain foam beam
Sample (B) : one side paper: a
foam beam with thick paper
glued to the bottom
Sample (C) : Two sides paper :
a foam beam with thick paper
glued to both top and bottom
12. Activity 4 : Results
When a strong, flexible material is
combined with a stiff, weak
material, the result may be a
composite that has desirable
qualities of both components:
strength and stiffness.
13. Design Project: Designing a fishing pole
We designed a
fishing pole, made
out of a composite
material that it
based on a plastic
straw.
14. Design project : Results
Our prototype was
strong enough to
hold 200 grams
without failing, but it
wasnât flexible
enough to deflect 2
cm with a load of
200 grams.
16. Rust resistance
Introduction and Rationale
We chose this product because itâs very useful and inexpensive
in the same time. It can offers on Qatar economically especially
because of the huge urban development here in Qatar. Also, it
can enhance the quality of construction. The main material of
the product is widely used in different: separation, purification,
and decontamination processes. No one thought to use this
material to resist rust.
17. Our main purpose of doing this product is to prevent
iron from rusting or at least minimize the amount of
corrosion formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen
in the presence of water or air moisture by using safe
and very cheap materials.
Objective
Rust resistance
18. Hypothesis
According to our experience with Albairaq workshops and the scientific background we
expected that when we mix (cation exchange resin, starch or ajar ajar and water)
together we will get a composite looks like clay. If we coat iron with this clay it will
protect it from getting rusting even if it exposure to factors that cause rusting. We
expected that because of the properties of the above materials. Cation exchange resin
is an insoluble matrix (or support structure) normally in the form of small (0.5-1 mm
diameter) beads, usually white or yellowish, fabricated from an organic polymer
substrate. But for our product we must use the powder not the beads to make the
process of mixing materials be easier. It is important to note that starch or ajar ajar and
water are just for consistency of clay.
Rust resistance
19. It's the first time for us to participate in an amazing workshop like
this. So, that means we don't have any experience at all. This was
our biggest fear and it affected a lot on our work. We took so long
time to get an idea. For a moment we decided to leave the
competition but AL-Bairaq's team encouraged our team and did
their best to persuade us to complete the competition. It was very
frustrating to see the other groups working while we were sitting
without an idea.
The product story
Rust resistance
20. Finally, after long discussion and ongoing research we got an idea. We
searched the internet for cheap and safe materials can be used as coatings.
With the help of chemistry teacher we learned more about the properties
of these materials. We began implementation trying to get these materials.
Starch and water are available everywhere but what about cation exchange
resin or (ion exchange resin)? We asked people from stores can offer this
material but we found the store moved from its location. We tried to find
the new location but we didn't. Another attempt was finding other shops
specializing in the sale of chemical materials but all told us that this
material isn't available.
Rust resistance
The product story
21. We have reached a cheap material and new use of cation
exchange resin which is rust resistance after studying the
properties of this material. This invented composite by us,
which consists of starch and water and cation exchange resin
would be grate and useful if it applied.

22. Recommendations
We advice you to dig deeper in this idea because it's really
useful, safe and cheep. Also, we can use it in many different
ways. We recommend that you use this composite to make
paints so it could be easier for using.
23. Conclusions
We hope that our idea has gained your satisfaction. We really
want to participate in the development of the State of Qatar even
by doing simple things because it makes us proud
