• Introduction
• Activity 1: Testing Different Kinds of Ice.
• Activity 2: Hunting for Composite Materials.
• Activity 3: Exploring the Difference Between
Strength and Stiffness.
• Activity 4 : Testing a foam for strength and stiffness.
• Design Project : Designing a Fishing Pole.
• Product Idea: Anti Water-Leakage Foam.
3. Introduction
• Composite:
A combination between two or more visible distinct
materials to form new materials with improved
properties.
•Types of composites:
4. Activity (1): Testing Different Kinds of Ice
• Objective: To figure out how materials
affect the composite’s strength.
• Materials:
3 Petri dishes (numbered) , water, tissues,
sharpening (wood and lead) , traces of
rubber, colored highlighter, cotton, steel
rod
• Procedure:
•We tested 3 samples of composites.
5. Sample 3: colored water mixed with other materials.
Sample 2: tissue paper with water.
Sample 1: only pure water.
•Finally: we put the dishes in the freezer for a
whole day, then we tried to break the ice.
•Results:
•The strongest composite was Sample 3,
•The weakest was Sample 1.

• Conclusion:
When we mix materials together, we get a new
composite with new properties, it may become
stronger or weaker.
8. Activity (3): Testing materials for strength
and stiffness
• Objective: To test different types of materials and realize the
difference between strength and stiffness.
• Materials:
Steel rod
Nylon rope
Wood rod
Plastic rod
Pasta rod
• Procedure:
•We tested each material according to its strength and flexibility.
•Strength was tested by putting pressure on the materials.
•Flexibility was tested by bending each material.
9. •Results:
• Conclusion:
• Strength is how much the materials e
will resist against pressure force.
• Stiffness is how much the materials will
resist against applying bend or stretch
forces.
10. Activity (4): Testing a foam for
strength and stiffness.
• Objective: To increase the Foam’s strength and stiffness.
• Materials:
Pins, 4 slices of foam, Long ruler, transparent tape, white tape,
a scale.
Procedure:
•We tested 4 samples of foam.
•We covered them with tape.
Sample 3: was covered from
both sides (disjoint top)
Sample 1: we left it plain.
Sample2: was covered from the top.
Sample 4: was covered with tape
from both sides (Top and Bottom) .
11. • We fixed each slice and suspended the
scale at the end of the foam slices using
a pin.
• Then we put on different weights to see
which foam will resist more.
•Results:
Sample 4 (the
two sided).
•Conclusion:
When we added tape to foam
from both sides, we had a stiffer
and a stronger foam slice.

12. Designing a fishing pole
• Objective: To design a fishing pole
which is light, flexible and strong.
• Materials:
2 long straws, 2 small straws, gauze,
steel pulley and tape.
• Procedure:
1. We pasted the long straws together with
tape.
2. We entered the small straws and some the
steel inside the long straws.
13. Results:
Our pole was light, strong and
flexible.
Third: We rolled the straws
with gauze.
Fourth: We rolled the straws
with some steel.
Finally: We tested the pole.
Conclusion:
The pole should be strong to carry
more weigh, flexible to avoid
breaking and light to be easy to
carry.
14. Product Idea
Title: Adantile… The Super Insulator
• Introduction and Rationale:
• Water leakage is a big problem that faces most of
people in our country, especially when raining
heavily. So, we want to solve this problem using
Foam and benzene. Also, our product will help in
recycling the extra foam that we don’t need. We’ve
gained many benefits from Al-Bairaq workshops
that had helped us in organizing the ideas of our
project.
Aim of the work:
To make a waterproof substance using foam and
benzene, to avoid water leakage in raining weather.
To recycle the extra foam which will help the
environment.
15. Adantile… The Super Insulator
Hypothesis:
o If we poured benzene on a
piece of foam, it would
dissolve.
o If we used clay as an insulator,
it won’t react with benzene.
o If we poured water on the
composite it won’t leak.
16. Adantile… The Super Insulator
Product story:
• Adantile is the abbreviation of Adhesive anti-leakage.
•We were told to find an idea of a composite that may
help our society. We realized that winter is near, and
rains caused big problems for us last year. We had an
important exam but it was delayed due to rain. As our
school’s walls and roofs were leaking and the school
was full of water. So we made this product to solve this
problem.
We discussed the idea with Al-Bairaq team, and they
helped us a lot in organizing our work.
17. •1st Experiment: Pouring Benzene on foam.
•2nd Experiment: Testing waterproofing.
•3rd Experiment: Making a non-flammable insulator.
18. Adantile… The Super Insulator
when we poured water
on the composite it
didn’t leak.
Results:
The benzene dissolved
the foam when we
poured it on it.
When we burned the
clay, it didn’t flam.
•Our product could be used
as an insulator. We can put
it in a tube then apply it
directly on any crack we
have at home. Then cover it
with modeling clay .
19. Adantile… The Super Insulator
Recommendations:
In case of adopting our product:
• try to find any solvent that may
work instead of benzene
• try to make more researches
about recycling foam .
• try to use it extensively in the
future
• try to find a way to keep the
composite away from air.
20. Conclusion:
We gained many benefits from
participating in Al-Bairaq workshop.
We learned all about composites.
Moreover, we think that
our project will help a lot
in solving water leakage
problem, and saving
environment .
