 We often hear about new cars and engine technologies
launched in the market everyday. Turbocharger and
supercharger are the most commonly used terms.
 Internal combustion engines i.e four stroke ones, produce
a specific amount of horsepower but car lovers who wish
to increase the performance of their vehicles, get
Turbocharger or Supercharger on their engines. These
devices act as as enhancers and increase the horsepower
of the vehicle by almost 30 to 40%.
Introduction
Turbocharger
 A turbocharger is a forced induction device used to
allow more power to be produced by an engine of a
given size.
 A turbocharged engine can be more powerful and
efficient than a naturally aspirated engine because
the turbine forces more air and more fuel into the
combustion chamber than atmospheric pressure
alone.
Turbocharger
 The objective of a turbocharger is to improve an
engine's volumetric efficiency by increasing density of
the intake gas (usually air).
 The turbocharger's compressor draws in ambient air
and compresses it. This results in a greater mass of air
entering the cylinders on each intake stroke. The
power needed to spin the compressor is derived from
the kinetic energy of the engine's exhaust gases.
Working of turbocharger
Key components of turbocharger
 Advantage:
1. No mechanical energy is required to drive the
turbine.
2. 20-40% of fuel is saved.
3. Significantly low CO2 emissions.
4. Big engines can be replaced by smaller ones.
 Disadvantage:
1. Since it is operated by the exhaust gases, it takes a
bit of time before it reaches operating speed.
Advantages and disadvantages
 Gasoline-powered cars
 Diesel powered cars
 Motorcycles
 Trucks
 Aircrafts
 Marine and land based diesel engines
Applications of turbocharger
 A supercharger is an air compressor used for
increasing the pressure, temperature, and density of
air supplied to an internal combustion engine.
 This compressed air supplies a greater mass of
oxygen per cycle of the engine to support
combustion enabling for more fuel to be burned and
more work to be done per cycle, thus allowing to
increase the power produced by the engine.
Supercharger
Supercharger
 Power to the supercharger is provided mechanically
by means of a belt, gear, shaft, or chain connected to
the engine's crankshaft.
 Supercharger’s compressor, driven mechanically,
draws in ambient air and compresses it. This results in
a greater mass of air entering into the cylinders on
each intake stroke.
Working of a Supercharger
Working of Supercharger
 Advantages
1.Superchargers do not suffer lag.
2.Minimum modification of the engine.
3.Increases torque.
 Disadvantages
1.It derives power from the engine itself.
2.An added strain on the engine.
3.An extra expense.
Advantages and disadvantages
 Automobiles
 Aircrafts
 Racing cars
Applications
Turbocharger Supercharger
1. They are driven by the waste
or exhaust gases.
1. They are driven mechanically
by the engine by means of
belt, gears, etc.
2. They are more efficient. 2. They are less efficient.
3. Since exhaust gases control
the drive and hence the
system takes a bit of time
before it reaches the
operating speed after
opening the throttle.
3. Since it is mechanically
operated, its response is
pretty instantaneous and a
sudden increase in power is
observed.
4. Conventional turbochargers
have a moderate cost.
4. Superchargers are more
expensive.
Difference between supercharger
and turbocharger.
The key difference between a turbocharger and a
conventional supercharger is that the latter is
mechanically driven from the engine, often from a belt
connected to the crankshaft, whereas a turbocharger is
powered by a turbine that is driven by the engine's
exhaust gas. Compared to a mechanically-driven
supercharger, turbochargers tend to be more efficient
but less responsive.
