College Essay On Music
Crafting a compelling essay on the topic of music for a college application can be both
challenging and rewarding. The difficulty lies not only in articulating your passion for music but
also in finding a unique angle that sets you apart from other applicants. Music is a broad and
diverse subject, and conveying its impact on your life in a way that resonates with the
admissions committee requires thoughtful reflection.
Firstly, defining your personal connection to music is crucial. Whether you are a musician, a
listener, or someone who finds inspiration in the rhythm of life, articulating this connection can
be challenging. You need to strike a balance between being genuine and avoiding clichГ©s that
might dilute the impact of your narrative.
Another hurdle is avoiding the trap of becoming too technical or jargon-heavy. While your love
for music might involve technical aspects, remember that the essay is not an opportunity to
showcase your knowledge but rather to reveal your character and experiences. Balancing
personal anecdotes with broader reflections on the transformative power of music is a delicate
art.
Furthermore, crafting a narrative that aligns with the values and mission of the specific college
you are applying to adds an extra layer of complexity. Tailoring your essay to fit the ethos of the
institution requires meticulous research and a keen understanding of how your musical journey
aligns with the college's culture.
In conclusion, writing a college essay on the topic of music demands self-reflection, creativity,
and the ability to convey your passion in a way that is both authentic and engaging. It is a
challenging task, but when done well, it has the potential to leave a lasting impression on the
admissions committee, showcasing not only your love for music but also your ability to
articulate your thoughts effectively.

Why Does Edgar Allan Poe s Use Of Diction
Valdemar would have to have consciousness after death. To this point, I do not
know if consciousness exists after death. However, P states that it was evident that,
so far, death (or what is usually termed death) had been arrested by the mesmeric
process (Poe 6). This leads me to believe that P was not working with a different
conception of deathpertaining to consciousness. Understanding the importance of
defining terms, it is important to look closely at the terms Poe chooses to use in the
story. Poe s use of diction continues to support my thesis. Using phrases such as;
liquid mass of loathsome of detestable putrescence, pungent and highly offensive
odor, thoroughly unnerved, rotted away and ejaculations of dead! dead! this story
suggests that any attempt to postpone death will have horrifying results (Poe 7).
These are the final phrases of the story. In order to get to this point it is important to
look at the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides actually happening in the past, the story is carried out in chronological
order. Time is handled through real time, dialogue between P and Valdemar.
Throughout the story P asks Valdemar questions; M. Valdemar, are you sleep...do
you still feel pain in the breast, M. Valdemar...M. Valdemar, do you still sleep (Poe
4, 5). After Valdemar is placed in a mesmeric trance, this is how the dialogue
continues between the two for the rest of the story. P fills in the time between his
dialogues with Valdemar by sharing with the reader his thoughts, the appearance of
Valdemar and his reactions to Valdemar speaking. As illustrated through the plot, the
story does not diverge to any past recollections. The only time the chronology
changes is at the beginning of the story when P introduces to the reader his reasons
for writing the narrative. As said in my introduction, P writes this narrative because
he rendered [it] necessary [to] give the facts (Poe
Dog Food Disposal
The dog food recall was a big eye opener for a lot of dog owners. Even if you did not
own a dog at that time you probably heard about it. The threat of harming your dog
by not knowing what you are feeding it creates an important question, what is the
best type of dog food?
There are many types of food to choose from and it can be confusing. Here is some
basic information to help you know which is right for your puppy. We will look at
which foods to avoid and several other types to consider, from organic foods to
making your own dog food. Before beginning always remember to read the labels so
you know what kind of nutrition your puppy is getting.
Foods To Avoid
Even though dogs love the canned food it is not the best source of nutrition.
Reification And Racialization In The Holocaust And Rwanda
Reification and Racialization in the Holocaust and Rwanda
Reification refers to the categorization of people based on those anxieties from fears
around conceptions of self worth and status. Anxiety, a basic component of
humanity, is recognized by its feeling of dread rather than its causes. Reification of
others is born out of reification of oneself (Weisband, Social Groupings ). It reduces
the freedom and choices available, and it assumes that one is too stagnated to change,
especially in comparison to others. This denies that all human freedom is similar. In
denying the situatedness of the human condition, people develop the desire to create
the uncreatable, and thus they reify themselves to confront anxieties over their own
situatedness. As the freedom they have is not what they want, this leads to self
reification, self contempt, self denial, and self disgust (Weisband, Reification ). It is
the beginning of hatred. The reified self judges the self in discipline. Similarly, the
logic of illogic starts with reification, which develops feelings of supremacism which
lead to racism, then racialization, then, finally, spatialization (Weisband, Rwandaand
Nativism ). These reflect the different modes of cultural development that rationalize
self contempt, self rejection, and denial of self worth. It represents the beginning of
doctrines that aim to explain stereotypes, prejudice, and other forms of hatred
(Weisband, Social Groupings ).
In cases of mass racial violence such as the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide, the
logic of illogic served to separate Jewish Germans and Tutsi Rwandans from the
majority population, by racializing their identities and then spatializing them as
collective groups. Both were racialized, for the Jewish through racializing the
religion and its followers, and for the Tutsi by a Hutu nativist movement that
racialized the Tutsi as bringing shame onto ancestral history. The spaces for both
groups were eliminated as these movements took root.
As discussed in Racism, Jewish Europeans have historically been and continue to be
viewed as separate from white Europeans, despite falling under the White category as
being of European and Middle Eastern origin. Even those who converted from
A Discussion Of Madness In Society During The Middle
Ages
The Oxford dictionary defines madness as The state of having a serious mental
illness . Madness has been construed in several different ways throughout centuries
and literature. Before and during the Middle Ages madness was mostly seen as a
suggestion of sorcery/witchcraft or demonic possession, or an imbalance of the
humors blood, black bile, yellow bile and phlegm, or as an effect of the moon
(since it was believed that madness was caused as a result of sleeping in a place
where the moon beams struck a person s head and thereby the word lunacy was
derived from the Latin word luna for moon). However, some considered the mentally
ill to be divinely gifted, that is, being gifted with the power of speech/words (poets,
writers, etc) and thereby the treatment and attitudes towards the mentally ill varied
from exorcism, confinement, trephination (used for people who were thought to be
possessed by demons and involved drilling a hole in the person s head to drive evil
spirits out of the body), whipping, etc. The sixteenth saw the establishment of
asylums and hospitals which accommodated and confined the mentally ill, destitute
and vagabonds, the jobless and the outlaws. All the unwanted people or the
undesirables were shunned by the society and sent to these institutions. St. Mary of
Bethlehem in London which was popularly known as Bedlam and the Hopital
General of Paris were two well known institutions that housed the mentally ill during
the sixteenth and seventeenth
Racial Inequality And Police Brutality
Racial inequality is a disparity in opportunity and treatment that occurs as a result of
someone s race (Racial Inequality, 1996 2017, line 1). Racial profiling and police
brutality falls under racial inequality. According to Nazgol Ghandnoosh (2017),
Officers racially biased use of discretion either intentional or unintentional is one
cause of racial disparities in policecontact that are not explained by differences in
crime rates (p. 6). When one group is targeted more than another it will cause the
group that is targeted the most to have more involvement. The crime rates for black
peopleis higher than those of white people because more black people are arrested
than white people. Nazgol Ghandnoosh (2017), states that, Almost
Analysis Of William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
A Rose for Emily
William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily tells a story about the life of a woman who
grows up in a small southern town shortly after the turn of the 20th century. He tells
the reader about the struggles that Ms. Emily and town of Jefferson face in trying to
move on from their past and adjusting to the inevitable changes that time brings.
Hans H Skei writes in his critical essay that A Rose for Emilyis the first story about
Faulkner s townspeople in any real sense, and it is the first story in which a
community point of view through a first person plural narrator (Skei). In reading
Faulkner s story, the reader can see that when the narrator uses we , that he is
referring to the people of the town. By doing this, the reader gets a sense that even
though the title of the story has the main character s name in it, Faulkner considers
the townspeople to be just as important as Emily in A Rose for Emily. In the story
Faulkner writes how both of these characters struggle with the changes that occur
throughout the passing years.
Managing change is difficult, but inevitable. Changes also affect people
differently. While some people thrive, others have a harder time in adjusting.
While describing Ms. Emily s house, the narrator tells the reader that cotton mills
and warehouses are encroaching on her house. Ms. Emily s house is described in
the story as a style from some years past. In fact, her house was built in the 1870 s.
What once had been a residential area of the town, is now turning into a thriving
industrial district. This suggests to the reader that the town is progressing while Ms.
Emily is stuck in the past. However, the reader can see from the first part of the
story that the people of the town have not been able to moved on from their past
either.
The story starts out at Ms. Emily s funeral. The narrator also tells the reader that for
Ms. Emily s funeral, everyone that lived in the town showed up. During the 1800 s
and earlier, weddings and funerals in southern towns were treated as events where
everyone was included. But during the time period of the story, weddings and
funerals were only for close friends and family. Faulkner also writes the men through
a sort of respectful
The Bloodless Revolution Of 1800
The Bloodless Revolution of 1800 was a very important event that shaped our
nation into what it is today. The Revolution changed America s history in major
ways. The twelfth amendment was created and the party divisions that we see today
in our modern government are results of the conflict. The revolution was also a test:
could the young nation of America shift power peacefully, as the founding father s
had intended? Or would everything collapse after only one president leading the
country? The Bloodless Revolution of 1800 was an event that changed our nation s
history an ways of government in many important ways. But in order to understand
fully the whole effect this event had on our nation, we must look back a few years
before 1800 to the Neutrality Proclamation, the John Jay Treaty, X Y Z Affair, and
the Quasi War.
George Washington, in his second term of office, issued the Neutrality Proclamation
in an attempt to ease the tension and conflict with Britain caused by The French
Revolution. Thomas Jefferson, being so disgusted with Washington s policies,
resigned his secretarial position in May of 1793, when the proclamation was
announced. Despite Washington s attempt to fix the conflict, British ships continued
to confiscate American merchant ships because they, in an attempt to remain neutral,
continued to trade with both France and Britain. War soon broke out after that
between the new French Republic and the European Monarchs, much to the
A True War Story In Tim OBrien s The Things They Carried
Only the dead have seen the end of war unknown. In Tim O Brien s The Things
They Carried, he tells us what a true war story is. Throughout chapter 7, he writes
what he believes is a true war story. It s through evil, disbelief, embarrassment, and
hidden meanings in Mary Anne s trip to Vietnam that we know what a true warstory
is. The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong is a perfect example of a true war story. In
a war, nothing ever hangs onto the good; it always grabs on to the evil.
Rat Kiley said, At the girl s throat was a necklace of human tongues. Elongated and
narrow, like pieces of blackened leather, the tongues were threaded along a length of
copper wire, one tongue overlapping the next, the tips curled upward as if caught in
a final shrill syllable (105 106).
A young girl with a tongue necklace isn t the thing someone would expect to see
from her. It s obscene behavior for a girl, especially in this time period. Many
people eat animal tongues; it isn t seen as weird behavior, but Mary Anne wears
them. The aspect of the human tongues makes it wicked and vile. O Brien wrote,
And then one morning, all alone, Mary Anne walked off into the mountains and did
not come back. No body was ever found (110). Mary Anne became one with Vietnam
during the time she was there. Eventually she blended in with the landscape and felt
at home with it. Not often do people hear stories of others just disappearing. It s
insane to willingly walk out to the mountains in a foreign

Mori readily points out what our government is doing is simply transforming Taiwan
into another Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of the People s Public
China; everyone, to some extent, knows what special means here. Accordingly,
people gathered together, most of whom were students, and were defending their
homeland on March 18th, 2014. By occupying the legislature for over twenty days,
every one demonstrates the insistence on protecting the nation as well as the
exploding poll and is being, no more, silent to politics. There are, of course, incidents

Arginine Vasopressin And The Plasma Membranes
Water reabsorption is regulated by vasopressin since its release increases the water
permeability of distal tubule and collecting duct cells in the kidney. After stimulation
by vasopressin, aquaporin 2 (AQP2) accumulates in the plasma membrane of these
target cells on the apical side. Aquaporin 2 is a water channel that allows water to be
reabsorbed from the filtrate (urine), returned to the bloodstream and consequently
concentrating urine. To this day, the trafficking mechanisms that recruit AQP2 to the
apical plasma membrane are still not well understood. Recent studies have shown that
cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) may not be required for arginine
vasopressin (AVP) mediated AQP2 membrane targeting, and that other signaling

Since it is the excessive expression followed by apical translocation of the
Aquaporin 2 that leads to congestive heart failure (CHF) and other water imbalance
disorders, studying the mechanism of the pathway that leads to this translocation is
important (Yui et al. 2017). Congestive heart failure in rats, in two separate studies,
was shown to be associated with the over accumulation of the Aquaporin 2
channels in the apical membrane of the distal tubal and collective duct cells in
kidneys which causes the fluid from the filtrate (urine) to be reabsorbed into the
bloodstream(Brond et al., 2013)(Nielson et al. 1997). This results in water retention
in tissues in different parts of the body which leads to congestion in the body. If
prolonged, the condition will lead to congestive heart failure, abbreviated CHF. In a
study of this phenomenon, they argued that vasopressin should normalize water
absorption in terms of increasing the permeability of the distal tubule and collecting
duct cells to water (Soren Nielson et al. 1997) and in doing such, would increase the
concentration of AQP2 along the apical membrane of distal tube and collecting ducts
(Soren Nielson et al. 1997). Such was the backbone of credence that let to their study
that CHF may be a counter consequence of

11 October, 2016 In 1775 General Thomas Gage, Commander if the British Force in
the Massachusetts Colony, issued orders to the troops quartered in Boston,
Massachusetts to march to Concord and and destroy the colonial military stores that
were there. The reason the British were in Massachusetts in the first place was
because the people of Massachusetts were very rebellious and have had many
violent resistances against the British already. The secret orders that Gage issued
were hardly a secret and some colonials knew about this movement a week before the
British moved out. Both the British troops and the colonial militia meet each other at

John Bateman, a British soldier who was captured by the colonists said that he
heard a command to fire given to the Regulars, and that none of the colonists fired
at the Regulars(3). This completely goes against the British evidence which clearly
says that they did not give the command to fire and were giving orders to not fire.
Also, since he was captured by the colonists, he obviously wants to say something
that pleases them since they are his audience. That makes his evidence unreliable
since he could have made that up to please the colonists who had captured him. Next
up is Sylvanus Wood who was a commonwealth of Massachusetts and gave a sworn
testimony on June 17, 1826. He Said that The officer then swung his sword, and
said Lay down your arms, you damn d rebels, or you are all dead men fire (5). He
also said One member of the company told me, many years since, that after Parker s
company had dispersed, and he was at some distance, he gave them the guts of his
gun (5). Wood said that The British ordered their troops to fire, as well as him
saying that one of the colonists did in fact fire against the Regulars. This contradicts
the fact that Bateman said that none of the colonists fired at the Regulars while
Wood is saying that at least one colonists did fire upon the Regulars. It also seems a
bit unreliable since Wood s testimony was made almost 50 years later after the event

The Godfather , a crime noir film produced in 1972, is about an aged patriarch of a
famous mafia dynasty that transfers control of his business to his disinclined son.
It was directed by Francis Ford Cappola and stars actors such as Al Pacino and
Marlon Brando. The film s numerous achievements, specifically in the opening
sequence, stem from the exemplary utilization and integration of misГ© en scene,
editing, and cinematographic elements. Mise en scene is a key element in the
representation of a character. For example, the film begins with a slow jazz
soundtrack, a characteristic of thriller films during the 1970 s. Then a plain black
background streches across the screen, setting the stage for what is about to appear
in front of us. Black... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scene is edited with a very slow pace that creates a sense of calm and suggests
the control that Don Corleone has over the situation. The sequence begins with a
close up on Amerigo Bonasera as he stares in the camera while it zooms out, telling
the audience about his daughter s rape. William Reynolds and Peter Zinner, the
lead editors of the film, used this shot, that spans the next three minutes of the film,
to add a sense of insecurity and rising tension. It also is used to reveal Bonasera is
talking to a mysterious figure disguised by the shadows and that three other men are
present, but without giving the setting of the scene or who these men are. Then,
they break the three minute shot by giving the audience their first glance at the
mysterious figure in the shadows. They cut to a medium shot of Don Corleone, the
leader of this organized crime dynasty, finally revealing this shadowy figure to the
audience, relieving them of some tension. The camera shifts location again in order
to reveal the scene, something like an establishing shot. Here, they reveal four male
characters, all dressed in suits, and the only lights coming from the slats in the
blinds and the sole artificial light on the right side of the room. Don Corleone is also
placed in the center of this shot with every other character facing him, giving him a
sense of power. Next, they cut to a medium shot of the godfather sitting
Cirrhosis Essay
Cirrhosis is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States and the
thirteenth leading cause of death worldwide.1 Cirrhosis is the irreversible fibrosis
of the liver characterized by hepatic architectural distortion secondary to fibrous
tissue and the formation of regenerative nodules.2 These anatomical changes cause
hepatic vascular resistance and an increase in blood flow leading to portal
hypertension. Porto systemic collaterals develop in order to overcome the
increased portal pressure gradient.3 Nitric oxide, an endogenous vasodilator is also
released in effort to overcome portal pressure with the expense of causing systemic
vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. As a result, a marked activation of
neurohumoral vasoactive factors occurs in an effort to maintain an effective arterial
blood pressure. Hypervolemia, increased cardiac index, decreased systemic vascular
resistance, and systemic hypotension are manifestations of portal hypertension.3

Impact of Globalization on Non Western Culture Essay
Impact of Globalization on Non Western Cultures
Examples of Globalization s Impact
Globalization is far reaching in this day and age. Globalization is the worldwide
flow of goods, services, money, people, information, and culture. It leads to a greater
interdependence and mutual awareness among the people of the world (Tischler,
2011, 2007, p. 430). One non Western culturethat has been impacted by globalization
is China. An example of the impact of globalization on China is their economy. Since
joining the World Trade Organization, China has transformed from a culturethat
relied on economic self sufficiency and shunned the thought of globalization to an
economy that is progressively more open to trade and foreign investment.

Indian culture before the transformation of globalization was a male dominated
society with very little respect or regard for females. According to India s
constitution, women are legal citizens of the country and have equal rights with men
(Indian Parliament), however due to lack of acceptance from the male dominated
society; Indian women have suffered immensely prior to globalization (Tripod, n.d.).
Indian culture after the transformation of globalization has had an innervation of
mass media, most prominent being satellite television bringing images and dialogue
from countless other cultures. This global influence has started to turn the tables in
the marked sexist roles in Indian culture prior to globalization.
Analysis of Example
An analysis of example can be derived from the aforementioned discriminatory
sexist roles in India that prior to globalization highly favored the male population
verses the female population. The female population in India has previously been
less than second class citizens. Indian women s cultural roles have been previously
defined by traditional customs that are centuries old and no longer apply in this day
and age. Previous to globalization, Indian women were to take total domestic
responsibility. They were not allowed formal education as the majority of teachers
and pupils were male, and the chances of a female remaining chaste was slim in those
settings, and related to tradition, females
Serfs And Feudalism
Serfs and peasants paid rent or would to contribute to their lords success. The serf
would owe two to three days of work to his lord for payment, the freemen would
pay rent instead (Bishop 235). Each villager owed the lord rent for his/her house. It
was reckoned in pennies but usually paid in kind a few hens or pigs (Bishop 235).
Without serfs and peasants feudalismwould not of been possible Military was the
primary basis of power in the feudal system. Elite status was based off of military
power. Local leaders control political decisions, command military power, have
controlling economic power and even dominate in the cultural realm. In a feudal
society, power is a private possession (S3 1). Private military services also played a

Neanderthal and Early Modern Humans Essay
Neanderthal and Early Modern Humans
The history of life on earth goes back to millions of years. Many species and
creatures evolved and changed through time, leading up to what we know today as,
modern man. One of the creatures most similar to modern man is the Neanderthals;
they are sometimes referred to as early modern humans.
An article entitled Early man steered clear of Neanderthal romance by Michael
Hopkin, explains that there was a discovery that early human ancestors of modern
man did not breed with their cousins, the Neanderthals, according to DNA that has
been studied. Neanderthals vanished from Europe between 30,000 and 40,000 years
ago, roughly the time that truly modern man made his first appearance in ... Show

There were 24 Neanderthal remains and 40 early modern human remains that were
studied. The bimolecular preservation of DNA of five early humans and four
Neanderthals was helpful enough for the preservation.
All four Neanderthals yielded the mtDNA sequences similar to those previously
determined from Neanderthal individuals, whereas none of the five early modern
humans contained such mtDNA sequences. In combination with current mtDNA
data, this excludes any large genetic contribution by Neanderthals to early modern
humans, but does not rule out the possibility of a smaller contribution (Serre, 16
March 2004).
Therefore, early modern humans and Neanderthals could have been around and
breeding at the same time, it is just a small chance.
Between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago, Neanderthals were gone from Europe (where
these fossils were found). Right around that time, the early modern humans were
beginning to migrate to parts of Europe. This brings up the point that it could be
possible that Neanderthals and early modern humans came eye to eye, but no one
knows what the reactions and attitudes were like if that were true. This is a question
of the history of life, did they exist simultaneously, and did they interact?
Despite intense research efforts, no consensus has been reached about the genetic
relationship between early modern humans and archaic human forms such as the
Neanderthals (Serre, 16 March 2004). It is a
Describing Phantom Limb Experience Essay
Describing Phantom Limb Experience
Of people who have had body parts amputated, about 80 percent experience some sort
of phantom limb sensation. This experience, which can range from severe shooting
pain to merely feeling the presence of the absent limb, most often occurs in amputees
but sometimes manifests itself in individuals whose limbs have been missing since
birth. The sensations patients experience are not necessarily of the same strength,
location, or duration from occurrence to occurrence, and the frequency of episodes
often fluctuates over time. Especially in the case of amputees, who have lived a
significant portion of their lives with the limb in question, it would make sense that
there be a psychological element to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This wiring between the cerebral cortex and the rest of the body has been the focus
of research on phantom limb pain. From this research, several theories have emerged.
Merzenich and Kaas amputated monkeys fingers and expected to find no nervous
response in the part of the homunculus whose bodily analog no longer existed.
Instead, this region of the cerebral cortex fired when the fingers next to the
amputation site were stimulated. Their conclusion was that preexisting axon
branches that had innervated the region were unmasked, which allows for nervous
response without any new neuronal growth. This idea upheld Hubel and Wiesel s
concept of the hardwired brain, in which the cerebral cortex s map is set at birth.
Ramachandran also had a similar idea of hidden circuitry, arguing that phantom limb
sensation could not be the result of new neuronal growth as the sensation s onset was
often as soon as a month or two after amputation, which be enough time for the brain
to remap but not for new cells to develop.
Pons research, however, came to conclusions that challenged this hardwired model.
His work with monkeys indicated cortical remapping significant enough that
sensation for an entire amputated arm could be caused by stimulation of the face; this
part of the cortex had taken over responding for the nonexistent arm. Such change in
the nervous system would have to incorporate new neuronal growth.

Causes Of The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
On March 25, 1911 in the New York City s West village 146 people mainly young
women immigrants of Italian and Jewish background perished. The women, some
just teenagers would work long hours in the factory sewing shirtwaist high necked
cottons blouses which were the fashion staple of the time for young women. The
owners of the Triangle Shirt waist factory would lock the doors while the women
worked, said to prevent theft and the visit of union reps to the location. What lead
to the fire was the unsanitary factory floor. This was the exact reason to why
before the actual fire, 400 of the factories employees went on strike. During this
strike the women fought for better wages and safer working conditions.
Unfortunately they only won some of their concessions on pay, but little was
actually done by the factories owner who continued to keep the workplace in
shambles. As well as the doors still locked. Besides the doors being locked there
were piles of flammable fabric scraps, over flowed waste baskets and many of
workers crammed in multiple floors of the building. In 1977 the fire was ignited
by what was said to be a match or cigarette tossed carelessly amid the debris on the
eighth floor. The fire quickly spread through the open factory floors above. The
actual shirtwaist building was fire proof and still stands today. Located in the West
village at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place one could still pay the
original building a visit. Those on the 10th floor escaped to the roof and took the
elevator until it stopped functioning. During those days fire engine ladders only
reached to the sixth floor. Unfortunately during the fire for some reason workers on
the ninth floor were not informed of the blaze, and due to a lack of a building alarm
system this floor had the highest number of deaths. The poorly built and
unmaintained fire escapes collapsed in the heat, sending a many of the workers on a
free fall to their deaths. Which after the initial tragedy, the New York CityFire Chief
Edward F. Croke was asked if the fire escapes provided by building in the area were
actually adequate in the event of a fire. The chief s response was A great many will

Today was hot. The sun s rays wanted to cook me alive. I just knew it. Muscle and
blood felt like the ingredients in a hot stew called my body. Sweat rolled down my
arm and joined the other beads of the salty liquid. Why was the sun blazing? What
did I ever do to you sun? Is it because I haven t been out in so long to see you? I
closed my eyes for a moment, hoping the sunwould relent its harsh heat after seeing
me leaning against the steps in misery. As if feeling sorry for me, a heavenly wind
came across me. Even the clouds pitied me as they moved in front of the sun. I
savored it. That brief relief of heat wasn t enough. I needed more. I needed much

I smiled a bit and went to carry the golden tricycle in.
No, he whined out as he rushed over to me, outside. James words slurred as he tried
to push the bike out the door. I was behind it, so all his struggles was being wasted.
I leaned up against the back of the couch that was on the right side of the front
door. I kept a foot on the bike to keep in in place. James huffed and puffed as his
chubby, little arms tried to overpower my one leg. It was almost funny to see him
put all his weight into it. I stopped him and closed the door to keep the cool air in.
The poor defeated three years old rushed up the stairs in front of the door. I just
shrugged and headed into the kitchen to fix sandwiches for lunch.

They were always knocking and scratching at the wall. I walked out of the kitchen
and walked over to the side of the stairs and waited to hear noise coming from
upstairs. Upstairs was silent but the sound of Blaze and the Monster Machines
asking about numbers. I waited a bit more. Still, no sound coming from James.

The Crime Of Crime And Crime
Crime is everywhere. It dominates news broadcasts and newspapers. It also takes
up the majority of television shows and movies. As well as a great deal of fiction
novels and books. Controlling and fighting crimes are essential for the safety of
citizens. Also the credibility and power of a government are affected greatly by how
they handle crimeand deal with criminals. When a crime takes place, the part that
fascinates people the most is how the offender is captured and brought to justice
(Nathan, 2005, p 29 34).
Nowadays, nearly all serious crimes are solved with the help of one or more police
investigators, police officers, witness testimonies, and the help of psychological
profilers and forensics.
Science has great contributions in the detection of crime and controlling criminals.
The advancement in DNA identification and a variety of forensic procedures help in
solving many crimes as it is portrayed in fictional television shows such as CSI.
Contributions from psychology are slowly emerging to keep up with these
developments from the natural sciences. There are many different ways in which
psychology can contribute to police work. All are brought up together under the field
of investigative psychology.
The contributions that psychologist can make to police investigations have been
most widely known and understood in terms of offender profiles . Offender profiling
is the combination of sociological, psychiatric, psychological, and criminological

Locke And John Locke s Theory On Personal Identity
Personal Identity or Self has been a very important topic for philosophers for many
years. Personal identity is how you describe or think of being which is derived
from memories that have taken place over the years. John Locke was a
philosopher who believed that your Self or personal identity come from memory
which is also referred to as consciousness in Locke s writings. Locke believed that
you are who you are, because your thoughts are yours alone no matter the vessel.
However, in this paper we will go over a few instances where Locke s theory on
Personal Identity poses a few concerns and why those concerns prove his theory to
be invalid. Personal Identity is defined in the Merriam Webster s Dictionary as The
persistent and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are not who we were X years ago. Locke explains change of identity through an
example of an oak tree, he says ...an oak growing from a plant to a great tree, and
then lopped, is still the same oak . (Locke, John) but is it the same oak? Sure, the
physical changes took place, but is this the only change that the oak went through?
As mentioned above regarding change, we are constantly evolving and changing
who we are on a daily basis despite what our memories hold. Locke s theory
suggests that even if we cannot remember one thing, but can remember another,
then the forgotten memory no longer matter because we were able to remember
the most recent memory which proves our self . This theory simply cannot work
due to several instances that deal with your memory alone. Your memory is made
up of various occasions that have taken place in your life. If you remember
walking for the first time as a baby, and what took place the night of your twenty
first birthday, you wouldn t necessarily connect those two memories together, those
very different memories do not stand alone as to what shaped you as the person you
are today despite your consciousness. Locke s theory being based around
consciousness poses a few more issues to take into consideration when deciding on
the validity of this theory. A common story that is linked to Locke s theory goes
My Life As A Doctor
As a child, people have different dreams and interests. When asked what they want
to be when they grow up, everyone has different answers. Whenever I was asked
this question, I always answered that I want to become a doctor. I always wanted
the medical kits and doctor play sets as a child. It was my dream as a child to
become a doctor. As I grew older, I started looking into different types of medical
fields, to see what interests me more and if I can actually handle the pressure and
difficulties of this profession. I am planning to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon as
heartalways fascinated me as it is a small organ that we depend on and its ability to
function determines our lives.
In 2012, my grandmother suffered a Myocardial Infarction. There was a very less
chance that she would survive, however, due to the advance treatments and care
she survived. She only has 30 percent functionality of the heart muscle, however
because of the medicines and regular check ups she can live her life normally. This
was the time when I decided that I want to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon to
help many more people like her to live their lives normally even after having a
heart attack. Becoming a Cardiothoracic Surgeon was just a dream and I knew it is
going to be challenging however I didn t have much knowledge about the functions
of heart. All I knew was that it pumps blood to the body. This was the time when I

The Economic Impact of Rising Oil Prices in Automotive Industry
The rise in the oil prices plays a major role in the automotive industry. The world
consumes over 82 million barrels of oil per day (BPD), with the united states taking
roughly 20 million BPD (McFarlane). Oil provides 97 percent of the transportation
fuels that helps to run the cars, trucks and other vehicles in the nation s highway
(Heinberg). Thus, when the price of the oil rises, it clearly concerns the auto industry
because the companies are competing with each other to meet the new demands for
more fuel efficient consumer conscious at reduced price. There is no doubt that it is
affecting the profit margin of the company. Moreover, increase oil price is also

Oil prices are largely driven by the global supply and demand. When oil prices rise,
it becomes more expensive to manufacture and transport the goods, in this case,
autos. Deputy CEO An of Geely, a private Chinese company, expresses his
disappointment by the oil price changes. He added that changes in the oil prices
have a bigger impact on the auto industry as this makes a lot of demands on the
carmakers and raises the standard and they have to design the product thinking more
about the fuel consumption (O Rourke). The increase in the cost to produce the
products must be factored in the higher price of the product. The sale of automobile is
affected by the rise in the oil prices and there is a possibility that the volume of sale
may decline as the result of higher prices that the producers now have to charge for
their products. Even though the auto industry decreases its price significantly,
their sale would decrease. This is because the demand of oil is inelastic in the short
term. This can be better explained by giving example. If the oil price rises, the
economy doesn t stop. People still have to go to work. The result of an inelastic
demand for the oil is that people will continue to buy and pay more for the oil
because they do not have immediate alternatives, but they will change their spending
behavior elsewhere because of their fixed amount of income (Enzo). In the long run,
people would find the
Unheimlich And Uncanny
In Freud s essay on the nature of the uncanny, published in the 1919, He states that the
most basic definition of the uncanny is the quality of feeling within the realm of the
frightening as That species of the frightening that goes back to what was once well
known and had long been familiar. The uncanny does not send us screaming in
horror, but instead, evokes a sense of oddness in an unsettling manner. Freud sums up
the uncanny in simple terms, unwinding from the semantics of the German words
Heimlich and unheimlich. The semantic scope of the words Heimlich and unheimlich
in German entwines in a fascinating manner that is not easy to replicate in English.
The most favorable way to represent the difference is that Heimlich represents the
familiar or the homely, whereas the unheimlich is the unfamiliar, the strangely
unfamiliar, or that what is known familiar but no longer is. Thus, Heimlich is a word
with the meaning of which foster towards a quandary, until it finally coincides with
its opposite, the unheimlich. Therefore, the unheimlich is in some ways considered
sub species of the heimlich. The inherent tension between the known and unknown is
played out as a disturbing experience of repressed material of the mind that
represents itself in an alien and unsettling form. He goes on to expand how this...

Harold Bloom Classic
The reason English classes always take the interest of individuals is the way we
are able to analyze, discuss, and believe what a piece of literature is about. The
subject individuals do not take into thought is the reason why we are reading these
specific works of literature. There is no way to read everything because Who reads
must choose, since there is literally not enough time to read everything, even if one
does nothing but read (Bloom 15). The most common reason is we, as a society,
have deemed specific works greater than others, even adding the label of a classic
on to them to show exactly that. But what deems a work of literature to be a classic?
The answer to this question is really relative to the individual. For someone that...

In this case, we are going to apply Bloom s standards to Art Spiegelman s graphic
novel, Maus. The first step is to figure out what the message Maus is trying to
convey to the reader. In this story about a Jew couple trying to find a safe place to
live, we can assume it is trying to bring attention to the injustice and hardships
Jews had to go through while Hitler was in power. This message brings on a
significant expectation to shed light on the life of runaway Jews, which is then
achieved by showing the different ways Vladek tried to fit in with Nazis to
provide for his wife, Anja. An example of this is when Vladek was passing a group
of kids who then yelled out JEW! making the kids mothers come out. Vladek plays
it smart by saying kids are always afraid and when a mother says Sorry mister. You
know how kids are... Heil Hitler he has no choice but to stick his hand out right
back (Spiegelman 3107). For an individual, or mouse, to be forced in hailing a
dictator that is committing genocide against them is something not to be taken
lightly. After fulfilling expectations, In the second standard this work cannot be one

Gender Roles In Jamaica Kincaid s Short Story Girl
Gender roles have held a dominant position in our society since the beginning of
humanity. From birth children learn from their parents and society what feminine
and masculine consist of and the responsibilities that come with either one. Gender,
rather than being a biological concept is cultural one, varying from culture to
culture. Both males and females are categorized by certain mannerisms, behaviors,
and interests that society has set forth expecting them to follow such rules. Women
are expected to play the role of a housewife making sure the home is a livable space
and taking of the children while on the other hand, men are expected to be the ones
who provide income for the family. In Jamaica Kincaid s short story Girl the author

a corner; this is how you sweep a whole house; this is how you sweep a yard. This
excerpt talks about some of the roles her mother believes a woman of her culture
should follow. It shows that ironing, preparing food, and cleaning the house are
traditional female roles and are expected to be done only by the female gender. By
tradition, a man is expected to be the one who brings in the money for the household
and a woman the one to take care of the home. This stereotype sets forward the idea
that for a household to function there must be both genders present. Without a male, a
household won t have an income and without a female there won t be a progressive
The Emergence of a Young Girl into Womanhood
Across several different cultures, there are different ways in which people of a
community recognize the emergence of a young girl into womanhood. In the United
States the most common is the famous Sweet Sixteen which as in the name states:
relates to being sixteen years old, getting a car, and having some sort of celebration
to commemorate the birthday. Among others include the Quinceanera which is
usually equated with Mexico and Bat Mitzvahs which is a Jewish girl s rite of
passage. Another rite of passage, called Kinaalda, is a puberty ceremony that holds
the same importance and significance among the Navajo tribeas their creation story.
Unlike American society, during the people s lifetime there is not a time between
child and adult. In the Navajo culture it seems that it is more plausible to say that the
time between being a child and adult or as stated by Leighton and Kluckhohn (1947),
physical maturity and social maturity are more nearly coincidental. Meaning unlike
the American culture where the gap between childhood and adulthood is filled with
an adolescence, and in the Navajo tribe this gap is not prolonged and instead this
transition is commemorated by a four night ceremony. This process begins at the
Navajo girl s first menstruation and is a way to announce to the whole community
that she has become a woman. In earlier marriage customs, a year or so after the
ceremony the girl would be considered ready for marriage; as a result, some felt that

Nevertheless, China also had to maintain stable relations with the U.S. in order to
keep a favorable macro environment for economic growth, resulting in a balancing
strategy to maintain good relations with all parties concerned.
However, not only Iran s nuclear activities catered for suspicion among the
international community. Ahmadinejad s exclamation, to wipe Israel off the map
particularly affected the U.S. approach, with Israel being the U.S. most important
ally in the region. Even though China was forced to ban military trade with Israel in
the beginning of 2005 due to U.S. pressure and with the same reason it already
happened during the late 1990 s, Ahmadinejad s choice of words made China
increasingly critical, stating that Israel s sovereignty has to be respected and that it
would not tolerate anything that could alter the stability in the Middle East. At the
same time, China progressively opened its borders for the Gulf states, resulting in
four rounds of negotiations in the beginning of 2006 regarding customs, trade
remedies and trade of goods. The results of these negotiations, a reduction of import
tariffs and accelerating oil relations, made China increasingly independent from its
trade with Iran, but maintained a close and supportive relationship to it.
Consequently, China slowly replaced the United States as a trustworthy, at least trade
wise, partner of Saudi Arabia by offering economic incentives paired with
Using Radio Transmission to Promote Development Projects
In this chapter, a brief review of the relevant research literature will be presented to
generate a theoretical outline of this proposed research. This theoretical outline will
guide the research strategy.
Fraser Estrada (2002) commented that since late 1970s, the importance of
community participation at all stages of a development initiative has been
commonly acknowledged. Parvalla (2003) defined (as cited in Ballur, 2012)
community as a territorially bound group with some commonality of interest (p, 92)
who are usually sharing a common language for daily communication with the same
cultural heritage. It is clear from this discussion that for developing any community,
radio, in particular community radio can be a supportive tool to cover wide range of
population. In addition, it has a great influencing power to motivate the marginalised
group of people
According to the Community Radio Installation, Broadcast and Operation Policy
(2008) by Ministry of Information of People s Republic of Bangladesh, in the
guidelines part, it stated that Community radio is, in effect, a form of public service
broadcasting, which serves a community rather than the whole nation. Community
radio is an own resource of a community, which will reflect the outlook and attitude,
norms and culture and thought and ideology of the very community people (p, 1).
While defining the community radio AMARC (the French acronym for the World
Association of Community Radio) (as cited in Ballur, 2012)
Effects Of Advertising On Children And Teenagers
There has been growing concern on effects of advertising towards children and
teenagers. Reports have indicated that obesity is affecting 6%~8% of Australian
schoolchildren, and the situation is escalating in recent years (Gill et al., 2009).
Ads of junk foods and fast foods are being criticized as encouraging poor eating
habits of children and adolescents. Besides, Ads containing improper information for
teenagers such as use of violent scenes and skinny models may also influence their
behaviour. This essay is to explain why it is necessary for governments to regulate
advertisingdirected to children and teenagers and how could it be done.
Government has obligation to intervene advertising to children and teenagers. First,
the influence of advertising is unavoidable for publics. It is estimated that Australian
children are exposed to more than 40,000 commercials per annum. With an
unprecedented frequency and intensity, these ads not only creates children s intention
to purchase a singular product, but also potentially influenced their lifestyle, eating
habits and purchasing preference. (MacKay, 2009) Secondly, given children s
vulnerability that they are lack of cognitive capacity to distinguish ads from reality,
they are more easily influenced by advertising than adults (MacKay, 2009). A
research on influence of food advertising on preschool children showed that children
exposed to videotape with commercials were significantly more likely to choose the
advertised item

navigators. During the Han Dynasty, the Chinese invented the first compass, a device
made out of lodestone a naturally magnetized metal and a bronze plate. Then, Arab

The Dispossessed
In describing Anarres as an ambiguous utopia, Ursula Le Guin makes a statement
on the state of the utopia of the mid to late twentieth century. Readers were
becoming bored with the perfection and idealism presented in most stories of
utopian societies, and they craved conflict and excitement. As The Dispossessed
begins, the ambiguously utopian aspects of Anarres are obvious; a mysterious and
traitorous Passenger (later revealed to be Shevak) is being transported via ship by a
defense crew that seems fairly blasГ© about the Passenger s condition as long as it
doesn t keep them from their course. Even this soon into the story, the reader is
bombarded with information that makes the world seem anything but ideal. Le Guin

Odors Memory
Sleep Supports Memory of Odors
Smells trigger memories on an emotional level. We, as humans, have a stronger
emotional response to odor triggered memories than any other sense. Smells of a
perfume or a ripe banana brings back memories of old. As for new experiences,
memories consolidate in our sleep. Even though it is not known what stage of sleep
this consolidation occurs, plenty of research qualifies this idea. In the research article

The Use of Literary Techniques to Develop Theme in...
A war has been raging in the jungle and rice paddies of Vietnam. Many have died
from other people and mines. Tim O Brien was born in the time known as the baby
boom. The babies born in this time, when they were older, ended up fighting in the
Vietnam War. The Vietnam War lasted for eighteen years (1956 1975)(Smith 1). O
Brien wrote Where Have You Gone Charming Billy in 1975 to protest against the
war. The military draft rarely happens, so when it happened for the VietnamWar
everyone was surprised. Many did not want to join, which caused mass protests
against a war we didn t have to enter. In the story, Paul Berlin is the main character.
When he first arrives in Vietnam, he watches one soldier named Billy Boy get his
foot blown off. Billy Boy reacts so much that he gave himself a heart attack. Tim O
Brien develops his theme you can not let fear take control in his short storyWhere
Have You Gone Charming, Billy through the use of setting, mood, and
characterization.
O Brien emphasize his theme through the use of setting. The Vietnam war started in
the 1960s. It was a terrible war that could have been avoided. It Laid the groundwork
for issues he later explored in fiction, including the mind numbing rituals of battle
(Smith 1). War is the worst way to settle disputes. The quote also means that war

Communication Is A Core Social Work Skills
Sam the service user was played by an actor. I conducted a 10 minutes mock
interview with him. Two members of academic staff and one real service user
were observing the progress of the interview. The assessment was filmed. To be
able to reflect critically, I was provided with a copy of the video clip along with the
observer s feedback. The remit of the task was to gain a broad understanding of
Sam s background. I believe that the role playing exercise along with this reflective
account helped me a great deal to understand and develop some of the key skills
involved in effective communication and interviewing clients. Communication is a
core Social Work skill (Trevithick, 2005 p1). Through verbal and non verbal
communication, service users are enabled to explore their difficulties.
Consequently, service users may gain a clear understanding on how to cope or
resolve their issues more effectively. After the interview, I allocated some time to
reflect on the role play activity. Considering the short nature of the interview and
my limited experience in assessing service users 1to1, I felt positive about my
overall performance. I exhibited some key skills, but also, I noted some
shortcomings I need to address before commencing into professional practice. The
way a social worker interviews a client can have a profound impact on the quality of
the responses given. Looking back at the interview, I feel that I structured the

Absorbance Experiment With Turnip Peroxidase
Introduction
Enzyme can be defined as a protein molecule that is a biological catalyst. (Ophardt,
2003) Catalyst increases the speed of a reaction but does not have to use anything to
help increase the speed. An enzyme can be determined by their properties. Enzyme
are a substrate specific, substrate connects to an enzyme at the location of an active
site. Enzyme is not used in a reaction and enzyme function in a good condition at the
optimum temperatures and pH. (Ahmez2005) Peroxidase is a type of enzyme which
is used in the experiment.
The type of peroxidase is used is called turnip peroxidase. Turnip peroxidase is made
up of Guaiacol and hydrogen peroxide. The reactants to the product are turnip
peroxidase or called tertraguaiacol and water. The color of the react is brown. In the
experiment was conducted there were baseline experiment, temperature, pH, 10X

Child Labour Persuasive Essay
Child labor is illegally being done worldwide currently to this day. Children to teens
are being forced to work in dangerous conditions that could get them killed, like
climbing trees, and working in the hot sun. Some work in industries that produce
tobacco or cocoa. According to CNN, 10 countries that are the worst with childlabor
include Eritrea, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Sudan,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and Yemen.
Illegal child labor should not be occurring anywhere in the world, no matter how poor
they are.
Criminals can get kids to finish all of the painstaking work they don t want to do.
They then pay them such a tiny portion of money, that it s barely anything. Some
kids don t receive any payment at all.
Comparing Muir And Wordsworth
Naturalism is a style and theory of representation based on the accurate depiction of
detail. These writers use several different techniques of writing. The one most often
used by the two is using nature to represent emotion. In Muir s essay and Wordsworth
s poem, both writers have expressed their relationships with naturethrough poetry and
diction.
Firstly, Muir and Wordsworth use both similar and different techniques when they
write. Muir wrote an essay that often used hopeful tones called The Calypso Borealis
. He used dialect as well to represent the way people he met spoke: Mony a puir body
has been lost in that muckle, cauld, dreary bog and never been found. By using
dialect, he was able to bring accents and poor speech to life.

College Essay On Music

  • 1. College Essay On Music Crafting a compelling essay on the topic of music for a college application can be both challenging and rewarding. The difficulty lies not only in articulating your passion for music but also in finding a unique angle that sets you apart from other applicants. Music is a broad and diverse subject, and conveying its impact on your life in a way that resonates with the admissions committee requires thoughtful reflection. Firstly, defining your personal connection to music is crucial. Whether you are a musician, a listener, or someone who finds inspiration in the rhythm of life, articulating this connection can be challenging. You need to strike a balance between being genuine and avoiding clichГ©s that might dilute the impact of your narrative. Another hurdle is avoiding the trap of becoming too technical or jargon-heavy. While your love for music might involve technical aspects, remember that the essay is not an opportunity to showcase your knowledge but rather to reveal your character and experiences. Balancing personal anecdotes with broader reflections on the transformative power of music is a delicate art. Furthermore, crafting a narrative that aligns with the values and mission of the specific college you are applying to adds an extra layer of complexity. Tailoring your essay to fit the ethos of the institution requires meticulous research and a keen understanding of how your musical journey aligns with the college's culture. In conclusion, writing a college essay on the topic of music demands self-reflection, creativity, and the ability to convey your passion in a way that is both authentic and engaging. It is a challenging task, but when done well, it has the potential to leave a lasting impression on the admissions committee, showcasing not only your love for music but also your ability to articulate your thoughts effectively. For assistance with similar essays or other writing needs, services likeHelpWriting.net can provide valuable support and guidance. Professional writers and editors can help refine your ideas, structure your essay, and ensure that your voice shines through, ultimately increasing your chances of making a memorable impact on the college admissions process. • 2. Why Does Edgar Allan Poe s Use Of Diction Valdemar would have to have consciousness after death. To this point, I do not know if consciousness exists after death. However, P states that it was evident that, so far, death (or what is usually termed death) had been arrested by the mesmeric process (Poe 6). This leads me to believe that P was not working with a different conception of deathpertaining to consciousness. Understanding the importance of defining terms, it is important to look closely at the terms Poe chooses to use in the story. Poe s use of diction continues to support my thesis. Using phrases such as; liquid mass of loathsome of detestable putrescence, pungent and highly offensive odor, thoroughly unnerved, rotted away and ejaculations of dead! dead! this story suggests that any attempt to postpone death will have horrifying results (Poe 7). These are the final phrases of the story. In order to get to this point it is important to look at the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Besides actually happening in the past, the story is carried out in chronological order. Time is handled through real time, dialogue between P and Valdemar. Throughout the story P asks Valdemar questions; M. Valdemar, are you sleep...do you still feel pain in the breast, M. Valdemar...M. Valdemar, do you still sleep (Poe 4, 5). After Valdemar is placed in a mesmeric trance, this is how the dialogue continues between the two for the rest of the story. P fills in the time between his dialogues with Valdemar by sharing with the reader his thoughts, the appearance of Valdemar and his reactions to Valdemar speaking. As illustrated through the plot, the story does not diverge to any past recollections. The only time the chronology changes is at the beginning of the story when P introduces to the reader his reasons for writing the narrative. As said in my introduction, P writes this narrative because he rendered [it] necessary [to] give the facts (Poe
  • 3. Dog Food Disposal The dog food recall was a big eye opener for a lot of dog owners. Even if you did not own a dog at that time you probably heard about it. • 4. Reification And Racialization In The Holocaust And Rwanda Reification and Racialization in the Holocaust and Rwanda Reification refers to the categorization of people based on those anxieties from fears around conceptions of self worth and status. Anxiety, a basic component of humanity, is recognized by its feeling of dread rather than its causes. Reification of others is born out of reification of oneself (Weisband, Social Groupings ). It reduces the freedom and choices available, and it assumes that one is too stagnated to change, especially in comparison to others. This denies that all human freedom is similar. In denying the situatedness of the human condition, people develop the desire to create the uncreatable, and thus they reify themselves to confront anxieties over their own situatedness. As the freedom they have is not what they want, this leads to self reification, self contempt, self denial, and self disgust (Weisband, Reification ). It is the beginning of hatred. The reified self judges the self in discipline. Similarly, the logic of illogic starts with reification, which develops feelings of supremacism which lead to racism, then racialization, then, finally, spatialization (Weisband, Rwandaand Nativism ). These reflect the different modes of cultural development that rationalize self contempt, self rejection, and denial of self worth. It represents the beginning of doctrines that aim to explain stereotypes, prejudice, and other forms of hatred (Weisband, Social Groupings ). In cases of mass racial violence such as the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide, the logic of illogic served to separate Jewish Germans and Tutsi Rwandans from the majority population, by racializing their identities and then spatializing them as collective groups. Both were racialized, for the Jewish through racializing the religion and its followers, and for the Tutsi by a Hutu nativist movement that racialized the Tutsi as bringing shame onto ancestral history. The spaces for both groups were eliminated as these movements took root. As discussed in Racism, Jewish Europeans have historically been and continue to be viewed as separate from white Europeans, despite falling under the White category as being of European and Middle Eastern origin. • 5. A Discussion Of Madness In Society During The Middle Ages The Oxford dictionary defines madness as The state of having a serious mental illness . Madness has been construed in several different ways throughout centuries and literature. Before and during the Middle Ages madness was mostly seen as a suggestion of sorcery/witchcraft or demonic possession, or an imbalance of the humors blood, black bile, yellow bile and phlegm, or as an effect of the moon (since it was believed that madness was caused as a result of sleeping in a place where the moon beams struck a person s head and thereby the word lunacy was derived from the Latin word luna for moon). However, some considered the mentally ill to be divinely gifted, that is, being gifted with the power of speech/words (poets, writers, etc) and thereby the treatment and attitudes towards the mentally ill varied from exorcism, confinement, trephination (used for people who were thought to be possessed by demons and involved drilling a hole in the person s head to drive evil spirits out of the body), whipping, etc. The sixteenth saw the establishment of asylums and hospitals which accommodated and confined the mentally ill, destitute and vagabonds, the jobless and the outlaws. All the unwanted people or the undesirables were shunned by the society and sent to these institutions. St. Mary of Bethlehem in London which was popularly known as Bedlam and the Hopital General of Paris were two well known institutions that housed the mentally ill during the sixteenth and seventeenth

  • 7. Analysis Of William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily A Rose for Emily William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily tells a story about the life of a woman who grows up in a small southern town shortly after the turn of the 20th century. He tells the reader about the struggles that Ms. Emily and town of Jefferson face in trying to move on from their past and adjusting to the inevitable changes that time brings. Hans H Skei writes in his critical essay that A Rose for Emilyis the first story about Faulkner s townspeople in any real sense, and it is the first story in which a community point of view through a first person plural narrator (Skei). In reading Faulkner s story, the reader can see that when the narrator uses we , that he is referring to the people of the town. By doing this, the reader gets a sense that even though the title of the story has the main character s name in it, Faulkner considers the townspeople to be just as important as Emily in A Rose for Emily. In the story Faulkner writes how both of these characters struggle with the changes that occur throughout the passing years. Managing change is difficult, but inevitable. Changes also affect people differently. While some people thrive, others have a harder time in adjusting. While describing Ms. Emily s house, the narrator tells the reader that cotton mills and warehouses are encroaching on her house. Ms. Emily s house is described in the story as a style from some years past. In fact, her house was built in the 1870 s. What once had been a residential area of the town, is now turning into a thriving industrial district. This suggests to the reader that the town is progressing while Ms. Emily is stuck in the past. However, the reader can see from the first part of the story that the people of the town have not been able to moved on from their past either. The story starts out at Ms. Emily s funeral. The narrator also tells the reader that for Ms. Emily s funeral, everyone that lived in the town showed up. During the 1800 s and earlier, weddings and funerals in southern towns were treated as events where everyone was included. But during the time period of the story, weddings and funerals were only for close friends and family. Faulkner also writes the men through a sort of respectful

The Revolution changed America s history in major ways. The twelfth amendment was created and the party divisions that we see today in our modern government are results of the conflict. The revolution was also a test: could the young nation of America shift power peacefully, as the founding father s had intended? Or would everything collapse after only one president leading the country? The Bloodless Revolution of 1800 was an event that changed our nation s history an ways of government in many important ways. But in order to understand fully the whole effect this event had on our nation, we must look back a few years before 1800 to the Neutrality Proclamation, the John Jay Treaty, X Y Z Affair, and the Quasi War. George Washington, in his second term of office, issued the Neutrality Proclamation in an attempt to ease the tension and conflict with Britain caused by The French Revolution. Thomas Jefferson, being so disgusted with Washington s policies, resigned his secretarial position in May of 1793, when the proclamation was announced. Despite Washington s attempt to fix the conflict, British ships continued to confiscate American merchant ships because they, in an attempt to remain neutral, continued to trade with both France and Britain. War soon broke out after that between the new French Republic and the European Monarchs, much to the

Throughout chapter 7, he writes what he believes is a true war story. It s through evil, disbelief, embarrassment, and hidden meanings in Mary Anne s trip to Vietnam that we know what a true warstory is. The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong is a perfect example of a true war story. In a war, nothing ever hangs onto the good; it always grabs on to the evil. Rat Kiley said, At the girl s throat was a necklace of human tongues. Elongated and narrow, like pieces of blackened leather, the tongues were threaded along a length of copper wire, one tongue overlapping the next, the tips curled upward as if caught in a final shrill syllable (105 106). A young girl with a tongue necklace isn t the thing someone would expect to see from her. It s obscene behavior for a girl, especially in this time period. Many people eat animal tongues; it isn t seen as weird behavior, but Mary Anne wears them. The aspect of the human tongues makes it wicked and vile. O Brien wrote, And then one morning, all alone, Mary Anne walked off into the mountains and did not come back. No body was ever found (110). Mary Anne became one with Vietnam during the time she was there. Eventually she blended in with the landscape and felt at home with it. Not often do people hear stories of others just disappearing. • 11. Arginine Vasopressin And The Plasma Membranes Water reabsorption is regulated by vasopressin since its release increases the water permeability of distal tubule and collecting duct cells in the kidney. After stimulation by vasopressin, aquaporin 2 (AQP2) accumulates in the plasma membrane of these target cells on the apical side. Aquaporin 2 is a water channel that allows water to be reabsorbed from the filtrate (urine), returned to the bloodstream and consequently concentrating urine. To this day, the trafficking mechanisms that recruit AQP2 to the apical plasma membrane are still not well understood. Recent studies have shown that cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) may not be required for arginine vasopressin (AVP) mediated AQP2 membrane targeting, and that other signaling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since it is the excessive expression followed by apical translocation of the Aquaporin 2 that leads to congestive heart failure (CHF) and other water imbalance disorders, studying the mechanism of the pathway that leads to this translocation is important (Yui et al. 2017). Congestive heart failure in rats, in two separate studies, was shown to be associated with the over accumulation of the Aquaporin 2 channels in the apical membrane of the distal tubal and collective duct cells in kidneys which causes the fluid from the filtrate (urine) to be reabsorbed into the bloodstream(Brond et al., 2013)(Nielson et al. 1997). This results in water retention in tissues in different parts of the body which leads to congestion in the body. If prolonged, the condition will lead to congestive heart failure, abbreviated CHF. In a study of this phenomenon, they argued that vasopressin should normalize water absorption in terms of increasing the permeability of the distal tubule and collecting duct cells to water (Soren Nielson et al. 1997) and in doing such, would increase the concentration of AQP2 along the apical membrane of distal tube and collecting ducts (Soren Nielson et al. 1997). Such was the backbone of credence that let to their study that CHF may be a counter consequence of

The reason the British were in Massachusetts in the first place was because the people of Massachusetts were very rebellious and have had many violent resistances against the British already. This completely goes against the British evidence which clearly says that they did not give the command to fire and were giving orders to not fire. Also, since he was captured by the colonists, he obviously wants to say something that pleases them since they are his audience. That makes his evidence unreliable since he could have made that up to please the colonists who had captured him. Porto systemic collaterals develop in order to overcome the increased portal pressure gradient.3 Nitric oxide, an endogenous vasodilator is also released in effort to overcome portal pressure with the expense of causing systemic vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. One of the creatures most similar to modern man is the Neanderthals; they are sometimes referred to as early modern humans. An article entitled Early man steered clear of Neanderthal romance by Michael Hopkin, explains that there was a discovery that early human ancestors of modern man did not breed with their cousins, the Neanderthals, according to DNA that has been studied. There were 24 Neanderthal remains and 40 early modern human remains that were studied. The bimolecular preservation of DNA of five early humans and four Neanderthals was helpful enough for the preservation. All four Neanderthals yielded the mtDNA sequences similar to those previously determined from Neanderthal individuals, whereas none of the five early modern humans contained such mtDNA sequences. In combination with current mtDNA data, this excludes any large genetic contribution by Neanderthals to early modern humans, but does not rule out the possibility of a smaller contribution (Serre, 16 March 2004). Therefore, early modern humans and Neanderthals could have been around and breeding at the same time, it is just a small chance. Between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago, Neanderthals were gone from Europe (where these fossils were found). Right around that time, the early modern humans were beginning to migrate to parts of Europe. This brings up the point that it could be possible that Neanderthals and early modern humans came eye to eye, but no one knows what the reactions and attitudes were like if that were true. This is a question of the history of life, did they exist simultaneously, and did they interact? Despite intense research efforts, no consensus has been reached about the genetic relationship between early modern humans and archaic human forms such as the Neanderthals (Serre, 16 March 2004). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This wiring between the cerebral cortex and the rest of the body has been the focus of research on phantom limb pain. From this research, several theories have emerged. Merzenich and Kaas amputated monkeys fingers and expected to find no nervous response in the part of the homunculus whose bodily analog no longer existed. Instead, this region of the cerebral cortex fired when the fingers next to the amputation site were stimulated. Their conclusion was that preexisting axon branches that had innervated the region were unmasked, which allows for nervous response without any new neuronal growth. This idea upheld Hubel and Wiesel s concept of the hardwired brain, in which the cerebral cortex s map is set at birth. Ramachandran also had a similar idea of hidden circuitry, arguing that phantom limb sensation could not be the result of new neuronal growth as the sensation s onset was often as soon as a month or two after amputation, which be enough time for the brain to remap but not for new cells to develop. Pons research, however, came to conclusions that challenged this hardwired model. His work with monkeys indicated cortical remapping significant enough that sensation for an entire amputated arm could be caused by stimulation of the face; this part of the cortex had taken over responding for the nonexistent arm. Such change in the nervous system would have to incorporate new neuronal growth. Case studies described on Macalester s web site seem to

The women, some just teenagers would work long hours in the factory sewing shirtwaist high necked cottons blouses which were the fashion staple of the time for young women. The owners of the Triangle Shirt waist factory would lock the doors while the women worked, said to prevent theft and the visit of union reps to the location. What lead to the fire was the unsanitary factory floor. This was the exact reason to why before the actual fire, 400 of the factories employees went on strike. During this strike the women fought for better wages and safer working conditions. Unfortunately they only won some of their concessions on pay, but little was actually done by the factories owner who continued to keep the workplace in shambles. As well as the doors still locked. Besides the doors being locked there were piles of flammable fabric scraps, over flowed waste baskets and many of workers crammed in multiple floors of the building. In 1977 the fire was ignited by what was said to be a match or cigarette tossed carelessly amid the debris on the eighth floor. The fire quickly spread through the open factory floors above. The actual shirtwaist building was fire proof and still stands today. Also the credibility and power of a government are affected greatly by how they handle crimeand deal with criminals. When a crime takes place, the part that fascinates people the most is how the offender is captured and brought to justice (Nathan, 2005, p 29 34). Nowadays, nearly all serious crimes are solved with the help of one or more police investigators, police officers, witness testimonies, and the help of psychological profilers and forensics. Science has great contributions in the detection of crime and controlling criminals. The advancement in DNA identification and a variety of forensic procedures help in solving many crimes as it is portrayed in fictional television shows such as CSI. As mentioned above regarding change, we are constantly evolving and changing who we are on a daily basis despite what our memories hold. Locke s theory suggests that even if we cannot remember one thing, but can remember another, then the forgotten memory no longer matter because we were able to remember the most recent memory which proves our self . This theory simply cannot work due to several instances that deal with your memory alone. Your memory is made up of various occasions that have taken place in your life. If you remember walking for the first time as a baby, and what took place the night of your twenty first birthday, you wouldn t necessarily connect those two memories together, those very different memories do not stand alone as to what shaped you as the person you are today despite your consciousness. Locke s theory being based around consciousness poses a few more issues to take into consideration when deciding on the validity of this theory. A common story that is linked to Locke s theory goes

  • 25. The Economic Impact of Rising Oil Prices in Automotive... The Economic Impact of Rising Oil Prices in Automotive Industry The rise in the oil prices plays a major role in the automotive industry. The world consumes over 82 million barrels of oil per day (BPD), with the united states taking roughly 20 million BPD (McFarlane). Oil provides 97 percent of the transportation fuels that helps to run the cars, trucks and other vehicles in the nation s highway (Heinberg). Thus, when the price of the oil rises, it clearly concerns the auto industry because the companies are competing with each other to meet the new demands for more fuel efficient consumer conscious at reduced price. There is no doubt that it is affecting the profit margin of the company. Moreover, increase oil price is also affecting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oil prices are largely driven by the global supply and demand. When oil prices rise, it becomes more expensive to manufacture and transport the goods, in this case, autos. Deputy CEO An of Geely, a private Chinese company, expresses his disappointment by the oil price changes. He added that changes in the oil prices have a bigger impact on the auto industry as this makes a lot of demands on the carmakers and raises the standard and they have to design the product thinking more about the fuel consumption (O Rourke). The increase in the cost to produce the products must be factored in the higher price of the product. The sale of automobile is affected by the rise in the oil prices and there is a possibility that the volume of sale may decline as the result of higher prices that the producers now have to charge for their products. Even though the auto industry decreases its price significantly, their sale would decrease. This is because the demand of oil is inelastic in the short term. This can be better explained by giving example. If the oil price rises, the economy doesn t stop. People still have to go to work. The result of an inelastic demand for the oil is that people will continue to buy and pay more for the oil because they do not have immediate alternatives, but they will change their spending behavior elsewhere because of their fixed amount of income (Enzo). In the long run, people would find the

Unheimlich And Uncanny In Freud s essay on the nature of the uncanny, published in the 1919, He states that the most basic definition of the uncanny is the quality of feeling within the realm of the frightening as That species of the frightening that goes back to what was once well known and had long been familiar. The uncanny does not send us screaming in horror, but instead, evokes a sense of oddness in an unsettling manner. Freud sums up the uncanny in simple terms, unwinding from the semantics of the German words Heimlich and unheimlich. The semantic scope of the words Heimlich and unheimlich in German entwines in a fascinating manner that is not easy to replicate in English. The most favorable way to represent the difference is that Heimlich represents the familiar or the homely, whereas the unheimlich is the unfamiliar, the strangely unfamiliar, or that what is known familiar but no longer is. Thus, Heimlich is a word with the meaning of which foster towards a quandary, until it finally coincides with its opposite, the unheimlich. Therefore, the unheimlich is in some ways considered sub species of the heimlich. • 27. Harold Bloom Classic The reason English classes always take the interest of individuals is the way we are able to analyze, discuss, and believe what a piece of literature is about. The subject individuals do not take into thought is the reason why we are reading these specific works of literature. There is no way to read everything because Who reads must choose, since there is literally not enough time to read everything, even if one does nothing but read (Bloom 15). The most common reason is we, as a society, have deemed specific works greater than others, even adding the label of a classic on to them to show exactly that. But what deems a work of literature to be a classic? The answer to this question is really relative to the individual. For someone that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case, we are going to apply Bloom s standards to Art Spiegelman s graphic novel, Maus. The first step is to figure out what the message Maus is trying to convey to the reader. In this story about a Jew couple trying to find a safe place to live, we can assume it is trying to bring attention to the injustice and hardships Jews had to go through while Hitler was in power. This message brings on a significant expectation to shed light on the life of runaway Jews, which is then achieved by showing the different ways Vladek tried to fit in with Nazis to provide for his wife, Anja. An example of this is when Vladek was passing a group of kids who then yelled out JEW! making the kids mothers come out. Vladek plays it smart by saying kids are always afraid and when a mother says Sorry mister. You know how kids are... From birth children learn from their parents and society what feminine and masculine consist of and the responsibilities that come with either one. Gender, rather than being a biological concept is cultural one, varying from culture to culture. Both males and females are categorized by certain mannerisms, behaviors, and interests that society has set forth expecting them to follow such rules. Women are expected to play the role of a housewife making sure the home is a livable space and taking of the children while on the other hand, men are expected to be the ones who provide income for the family. This excerpt talks about some of the roles her mother believes a woman of her culture should follow. It shows that ironing, preparing food, and cleaning the house are traditional female roles and are expected to be done only by the female gender. By tradition, a man is expected to be the one who brings in the money for the household and a woman the one to take care of the home. This stereotype sets forward the idea that for a household to function there must be both genders present. Without a male, a household won t have an income and without a female there won t be a progressive
  • 29. The Emergence of a Young Girl into Womanhood Across several different cultures, there are different ways in which people of a community recognize the emergence of a young girl into womanhood. In the United States the most common is the famous Sweet Sixteen which as in the name states: relates to being sixteen years old, getting a car, and having some sort of celebration to commemorate the birthday. Among others include the Quinceanera which is usually equated with Mexico and Bat Mitzvahs which is a Jewish girl s rite of passage. Another rite of passage, called Kinaalda, is a puberty ceremony that holds the same importance and significance among the Navajo tribeas their creation story. Unlike American society, during the people s lifetime there is not a time between child and adult. In the Navajo culture it seems that it is more plausible to say that the time between being a child and adult or as stated by Leighton and Kluckhohn (1947), physical maturity and social maturity are more nearly coincidental. Meaning unlike the American culture where the gap between childhood and adulthood is filled with an adolescence, and in the Navajo tribe this gap is not prolonged and instead this transition is commemorated by a four night ceremony. This process begins at the Navajo girl s first menstruation and is a way to announce to the whole community that she has become a woman. In earlier marriage customs, a year or so after the ceremony the girl would be considered ready for marriage; as a result, some felt that a girl s

However, not only Iran s nuclear activities catered for suspicion among the international community. Ahmadinejad s exclamation, to wipe Israel off the map particularly affected the U.S. approach, with Israel being the U.S. most important ally in the region. Even though China was forced to ban military trade with Israel in the beginning of 2005 due to U.S. pressure and with the same reason it already happened during the late 1990 s, Ahmadinejad s choice of words made China increasingly critical, stating that Israel s sovereignty has to be respected and that it would not tolerate anything that could alter the stability in the Middle East. At the same time, China progressively opened its borders for the Gulf states, resulting in four rounds of negotiations in the beginning of 2006 regarding customs, trade remedies and trade of goods. Using Radio Transmission to Promote Development Projects In this chapter, a brief review of the relevant research literature will be presented to generate a theoretical outline of this proposed research. This theoretical outline will guide the research strategy. Fraser Estrada (2002) commented that since late 1970s, the importance of community participation at all stages of a development initiative has been commonly acknowledged. Parvalla (2003) defined (as cited in Ballur, 2012) community as a territorially bound group with some commonality of interest (p, 92) who are usually sharing a common language for daily communication with the same cultural heritage. It is clear from this discussion that for developing any community, radio, in particular community radio can be a supportive tool to cover wide range of population. In addition, it has a great influencing power to motivate the marginalised group of people According to the Community Radio Installation, Broadcast and Operation Policy (2008) by Ministry of Information of People s Republic of Bangladesh, in the guidelines part, it stated that Community radio is, in effect, a form of public service broadcasting, which serves a community rather than the whole nation. Reports have indicated that obesity is affecting 6%~8% of Australian schoolchildren, and the situation is escalating in recent years (Gill et al., 2009). Ads of junk foods and fast foods are being criticized as encouraging poor eating habits of children and adolescents. Besides, Ads containing improper information for teenagers such as use of violent scenes and skinny models may also influence their behaviour. This essay is to explain why it is necessary for governments to regulate advertisingdirected to children and teenagers and how could it be done. Government has obligation to intervene advertising to children and teenagers. First, the influence of advertising is unavoidable for publics. It is estimated that Australian children are exposed to more than 40,000 commercials per annum. With an unprecedented frequency and intensity, these ads not only creates children s intention to purchase a singular product, but also potentially influenced their lifestyle, eating habits and purchasing preference. (MacKay, 2009) Secondly, given children s vulnerability that they are lack of cognitive capacity to distinguish ads from reality, they are more easily influenced by advertising than adults (MacKay, 2009). A research on influence of food advertising on preschool children showed that children exposed to videotape with commercials were significantly more likely to choose the advertised item
