How Did Charles White Influence The Civil Rights Movement
Charles White Jr. was born in Chicago on April 2, 1918 to the parents of Ethel Gary and Charles
White Sr. At a young age, White realized his passion for art and was only fueled more when one day
after school he met art students from the Art Institute of Chicago who taught him how to mix paint.
Not too long after did White begin to skip school because of discrimination and got a job working for
the Regal Theater, meeting many other black artists who influenced him to be an artist; White was
even able to attend a class at the Art Institution. Two years later when he was sixteen, he met many
artists, poets and intellectuals who exposed him to many new ideas at a party and was greatly
impacted by the philosophy New Negro, a term implying a refusal to submit to racial laws and dignity
for black people. He won a full time scholarship at the Art Institute where he joined the Arts and
Crafts Guilds and became a Work in Progress artist (a form of relief for people who needed paying
jobs) (White). At ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Civil Rights Movement was as series of social movements that seeked to end racial segregation
and discrimination. He was an active participant both physically and with his art. Growing up, White
noticed how black people were always portrayed poorly and with stereotypes. School especially made
it seem like being black was something to be embarrassed about and that they were inferior to whites
(White). Due to that, White s artwork focused on the history, culture and life of black people in
America. White s purpose to his artwork was for black people to take pride in their culture. One work
of his Study Wall shows a young black woman looking confidently at the viewer. He portrayed the
black people in his works with the dignity and respect they deserved. He didn t want his people to feel
the same way he did as a kid, instead enjoying who they were with pride ( African American Artist:

The Dominance of Microsoft’s Xbox 360
The Dominance of Microsoft s Xbox 360
The video game market has slowly and steadily created a larger presence for itself in the entertainment
industry. The largest part of the market s recent growth (from 2005 to the present) is undeniably due in
part to the video game console created by Microsoft called the Xbox 360. Microsoft was the first
company to release what is called the current generation console, and successfully beat Sony out of
the gate. Prior to the release of the Xbox 360, Sony had dominated the market with their console, the
PlayStation 2. It is because of Microsoft s ongoing innovations to enhance player interactivity and
large game catalogue (especially those with record breaking sales) is why they are the dominant ...

(Kubba) This amount of money is unheard of when it comes to music or film. In comparison, the top
most grossing films are Avatar and Titanic. (Internet Movie Database) The film Avatar earned $760
million within three years, and Titanic earned $658 million within six years, all of which are
comprised of film earnings at the box office and home video recordings like DVD or Blu ray. The
technology created by Microsoft for their Xbox 360 is the first of its kind. A perfect example is a
device called the Kinect. This device utilizes a microphone and multiple cameras to enhance gamers
experience, especially for game titles like Dance Central. Kinect utilizes motion detection in order to
spot interaction and display it on the screen accordingly. Another function for the device is voice
recognition. Rather than using a controller, the player can simply speak the commands and the Xbox
will do the said action. But the use for the Kinect has also extended far beyond its gaming origins,
spurring advances in medical treatment. (Knight) Using the Kinect for real world applications,
including making medical diagnoses or three dimensional modeling was an unintended side effect of
the Kinect when it was released. At first, Microsoft seemed hesitant to allow people to use the Kinect
for something outside of gaming, but soon it was apparent that it could be used

Teenage Girls And Teenagest Pressure From Advertisers To...
The problem I am addressing is how to help teenage girls resist pressure from advertisers to look thin.
I will be proposing ways to change people s specific attitudes and behaviors that will potentially close
a gap between what is happening and what should be happening. The goal is not to educate or increase
awareness about this issue because it is a very widely talked about topic. The problem is that teenage
girls (who) should not be peer pressured to look thin (what) in today s (when) society (where). What is
happening today is that teenage girls have this societal pressure to look thin. This is mostly due to
companies and advertisers putting out campaigns with smaller, thinner models and celebrities. With
the rise of technology, people are becoming more and more influenced by what they see on television,
the Internet, and social media. Teenage girls see these beautiful, thin celebrities and aspire to look like
that. Girls are more vulnerable than ever today and some will do just about anything to give in to the
pressure and try to look like someone else. What should be happening is that companies and
advertisers should use a more diverse group of woman when putting out campaigns. Beauty comes in
all shapes, sizes and colors. They should be embracing the diversity throughout the world and show
that off when advertising. This is impacting mostly teenage girls as their bodies are changing and as
they are trying to figure out who they are. However, this pressure is not just

Leadership In Beowulf
A leader in any tale is an exceptional figure, whether good or evil, they also display tremendous
strength above all others be it physical, emotional or mental. Their qualities instill in them a reverence
that all of their subjects come to realize and respect. The role of leader is usually first assigned to a
different character and upon completion of his journey the main character usually becomes the leader
or a figure who has the potential to lead others, the leader is usually a well known, revered, however
they are alone, both figuratively and physically. Beowulf written by an unnamed poet has multiple
characters that the reader can identify as leaders, one whom is within the first five lines of the text.
Shielf Sheafson, is described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beowulf begins with a history of the Kings of the Spear Danes, beginning with Shield Sheafson.
Shield Sheafson, arrived by sea alone, likely that as a child all Shield brought with him only a sheaf

benches...terror of hall troops (l.4 6)1. As his legend grew so did his influence and kingdom, by the
time he died every clan that touched an outlying coast had to pay tribute to him. He was one good king
(l. 11)1, he had a sea burial; buried alone, set adrift on the sea. He controlled all aspects he was
powerful, revered by all and alone in the end.
Beowulf the central character, by the completion of the tale also imbues the qualities of a leader. He is

Beowulf s reputation and age. Beowulf s seemingly omnipotent powers are questioned thrice in his

during his match with Grendel s mother under the water in the swamp a few miles from Heorot and

Comparing Pygmalion And The Makeover, By George Bernard Shaw
No matter if a person is a reader of Pygmalion, written by George Bernard Shaw, or a viewer of The
Makeover, it is understood both Eliza Doolittle and Elliot Doolittle are in need of a transformation.
Throughout both the book and film, both characters were going through drastic changes in life. In the
play, Pygmalion, Eliza Doolittle, living in London England, was considered an illiterate, poor girl.
Eliza is a girl that stands at a flower shop and sells flowers. Heavy summer rain had settled into
London, and all the people were seeking shelter. Henry Higgins along with Colonel Pickering and
Freddy were among those taking shelter that very day. Freddy s mother had told him to take a taxi
home. Opening his umbrella, Freddy ran into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hannah is competing against a local weather man for a Congress position. As the film continues,
Hannah s outcome is not so great; she loses to the local weather man. Hannah Higgins is compared to
Henry Higgins, in Pygmalion, because she is grumpy most of the time. After her recent loss, Hannah
and Colleen Pickering were back at the office reviewing. Elliot Doolittle, the local beer distributor,
walked by. He was speaking in a language nobody could understand. Hannah walked up to him telling
him his speaking was not correct. He was extremely offended by her comment and walked away.
The local weather man, competing for the role, never got the weather right, so the day he made his
speech was not any different. He did not know of any thunderstorms in the area, so he died from a
lightning strike. Hannah Higgins was, then, eligible to be in the race again. People would not vote for
her, though, so she had to find some way to win the race. Her perfect solution was to get Elliot
Doolittle in the race. The only problem with him was he was not well dressed and could not speak
fluently. Hannah had also offended him earlier, so the chances of him doing this favor for her was not

Character Analysis of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, by...
The Great Gatsby is an extraordinary novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who tells the story about the
wealthy man of Long Island named, Jay Gatsby, a middle aged man with a mysterious past, who lives
at a gothic mansion and hosts many parties with many strangers who were not entirely invited. In the
novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, many characters are discussed uniquely to an
extent from the festive, yet status hungry Roaring Twenties. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald
introduces many characters who all seem to cause conflict with each other because of incompatible
personalities. The main character that F. Scott Fitzgerald sets the entire book over is Jay Gatsby,
Gatsby, is first shown as a mysterious man whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that Gatsby seems to strangely disappear from Nick s view, and with Nick unaware of who
Jay Gatsby legitimately, this gives the character an aura of mystery. Gatsby is a mysterious unique
character that many people seem to guess who his true identity is, for example when Nick and Jordan
attend on of Gatsby s great parties Nick begins to ask Jordan questions about Gatsby where is he from,
I mean? And what does he do? Now you re started on the subject (Fitzgerald 53). This shows that
nobody fully understands who Gatsby truly is, and that although many people participate at his parties,
no one really knows who the host actually is, making Jay Gatsby mysterious as ever.
Jay Gatsby, the main character of F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, is also described as a man
who seemed to do anything to get what he wants, however even though what he wants he cannot
receive and this tends to hurt some of the other characters around Jay Gatsby, which makes Gatsby
seem as a stubborn man who is stubbornly in love. Gatsby shows stubbornness when he is talking to
Tom and Daisy, for example in chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby it states your wife doesn t love you, said
Gatsby quietly. She never loved you. She loves me. (Fitzgerald 137). This shows that Gatsby is so

Characteristics Of Video Games
WhatÅ› a sport? What makes up a Sport? People today believe that there are defining characteristics of
a sport, while others believe that any activity could possibly become a sport with the right format and
or qualities. By examining the similar characteristics of ¨regular¨ sports and video games, the fact that
people already use/train with video games in different situations, it is clear that video games should be
a sport too.
To be frank , video games already have so many similar characteristics to sports, that it wouldn t hurt
anybody to just allow them to become a real professional sport. Starting off with want video game

sports.Video games also have clear rules, multiple tournaments worldwide like the league of legends

The Natural Family Planning ( Safe Period )
3 Natural family planning ( safe period):
Natural family planning is one of the most widely utilized means of birth control, espicially for those
whom their religion or their cultural beliefs do not authorize devices or drugs for birth control. This
method includes periodic abstinence, to avoid intercourse during a female s fertile period, which is
around the time of ovulation. Determination of the fertile period involve the calendar method, cervical
mucus method, or the symptothermal method technique.
The calendar method is based on 3 hypotheses as follows: The human ovum can be fertilized only for
approximately 24 hours after ovulation, spermatozoa can maintain their ability of fertilizing for only
48 hours after coitus, and ovulation usually occurs 12 16 days before the onset of the subsequent
menestruation. The menses is recorded for 6 cycles to estimate the fertile period. The earliest day of
the fertile period is calculated by the number of days in the shortest menstrual cycle subtracted by 18.
The latest day of the fertile period is assessed by the number of days in the longest cycle subtracted by

The Chasseur
Caspar David Friedrich s work The Chasseur in the Forest, 1814, makes use of this technique as the
subject is positioned at a distance from the audience, walking away from our line of sight and toward
the towering trees of a forest ahead. The work is typically romantic as the poignancy and theatricality
of the imagery attests to the visual impact of this motif and its complex characterization of the
individual in relation to the natural world . In light of this, Friedrich s work blurs the boundaries
between landscape and portrait painting, effectively carving out a unique subdivision of these
disciplines which exists in both realms at once. However, the artist s humanistic technical and
compositional tendencies solidify the position of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What emerged in its place was a newfound appreciation of the ordinary and the real, in a nostalgic
revival of the pre industrial world through depicting the life and work of peasants . However, this
bourgeoning realist and naturalist preoccupation did not entirely destroy or even entirely disassociate
from the artistic tastes of the romantics. The temporal and contextual proximity of romanticism,
realism and their affiliated stylistic subsets culminate with widespread influence throughout Europe,
providing some explanation for potential similarities in subject matter and aesthetics. One of the key
parallels between the romantics and the realists is their departure from urban living to regional,
sparsely populated areas favouring natural settings, once again emphasising the connection between
people and the environment . However, the visual consideration of this relationship is approached in
different ways, and this is the pivotal point of divergence from romanticism to realism. The realist
movement, with its empathetic and attentive depictions of farmers, labourers and the working class in
general, marked a new appreciation of simple, wholesome and humble living as opposed to grand
narratives of mythology and history or dramatic and formidable landscapes which largely

I agree with him in his essay Harvard by Lottery he said all that matters is being smart, savvy, and
lucky enough to get into top institution. Also, I stand with him when he argues for a lottery system
among students to eligible for admission in universities because it will depend on luck rather than on
race, ethnicity, and social class that raises the social inequality between students. This system will
enable all the students either form upper, middle, or lower class who are smart to enter top
universities, such Harvard. As I see in his essay Rich Man s Burden he said that upper class people in
the system of stratification work more than lower class people. I think because they want to stay upper
class people. Even though they have a lot of money that may be enough form them to live their entire
life, they work hard to increase that money because money for them is wealth power, and prestige.
Also, I agree with him in his essay The Black White Wealth Gap which he shows the difference
between White Black incomes. I think he mentioned a good point when he said for white they had a
lot of advantage that allowing them to pass their wealth from generation to generation. On the other
hand, he said for Black people they had a lot of disadvantages, including barriers to property
accumulation. As I think another disadvantages for Black people was because the racial discrimination
that was practiced against them for a long time didn t enable them to make a good money to pass it
from generation to generation. So, it becomes a gap between Black and White

THE DRAMATIC SIGNIFICANCE OF SICK CHARACTERS IN OLA ROTIMI S PLAYS Odia
Clement Eloghosa ABSTRACT In this paper, the sick characters are studied through the examination
of their dramatic significance and contributions to the development of Ola Rotimi s drama. Three
aspects of dramatic significance are identified in this paper and we argue that the sick: (1) act as
witness and help the healthy establish truth, (2) create crisis situations that stir up diverse emotions in
the audience, and finally, (3) heighten dramatic tension which boosts the degree of suspense in the
plays. I INTRODUCTION The paper examines the dramatic significance of sick characters in Ola

He identifies collectivist consciousness as the defining factor which crystallizes Rotimi s advancement
of themes like solidarity, followership and self sufficiency. Femi Osofisan, Toyin Akinosho, Umukoro
et al and Effiok Uwatt have made cursory remarks on Rotimi s use of sick characters and these are
worth reviewing here. Osofisan, examining the political imperative in African dramaturgy and theatre
practice, makes some passing comments on the sick in Hopes, a play he considers as belonging to the
tradition of socialist theatre and posits that the aim of the sick in that play is to teach our masses the
virtue of collective struggle, the irrelevance of tribal differences in face of common economic
exploitation and the possibility of heroism among the poor and down trodden (5). On his part,
Akinosho, reviewing the performance of Rasheed Gbadamosi s Behold My Redeemer, a play directed
by Ola Rotimi, and which has a psychiatric setting, makes brief comments on Rotimi s portrayal of
sick characters. He says, As director and playwright, Ola Rotimi is known for using the sick to portray
the Nigerian Society (11). He adds that in Our Husband, the playwright uses the sick to paint the
Nigerian politician as a mad power seeker . Umukoro et al, examining the major events in The Gods,

Analysis Of The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down By...
Anne Fadiman s novel The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down depicts the colliding worlds of the
Western and Hmong culture in an effort to save the life of a little girl, who is diagnosed with epilepsy.
The novel tells two different, but interwoven, stories in which one from the point of view of Lia s
parents, and another from the point of view of health care providers. Both Lia s parents and health
care providers want the best for Lia Lee, but due to a lack of understanding and cultural barriers, result
in the tragedy of Lia. This article explains how anthropological concepts are applied into the novel,
and how themes of culture and cultural misunderstanding impacted Lia s parents and the health care
providers resulting in a tragedy.

Adjusting to the Hmong s new homeland has not been easy for them. Traditional Hmong beliefs
regarding healing and curing of disease differ greatly from those of the Western culture. Western
medicine relies heavily on a medical process in which a specific technique corrects a specific problem
by treatment. Health is the absence of disease and measures the individual s adaptation to an
environment. On the other hand, Hmong believe illness is associated with spiritual causes. For
instance, when Lia was three month ago, she had an epileptic seizure in which Lia s mother Foua, and
her father, Nao Kao, called the episode the spirit catches you and you fall down (Fadiman, 1997,
p.20). According to Lia s parents, it was a spiritual illness which Lia s soul had fled out of her body
(Fadiman, 1997, p. 21). On the other hand, Dr. Dan Murphy, who practiced Western medicine,
diagnosed Lia Lee with epilepsy. The Ethnocentrism is the judging of other cultures by the standards
of one s own culture (Miller, Esterik, Esterik, 2004, p. 11). Therefore, all other ways of doing things
are considered inferior and unnatural. For instances, when Dr. Neil Ernst expressed that he felt it was
important for the Hmong to understand that there were certain elements of medicine and that the
doctors understood better than the Hmong did (Fadiman, 1997, p.79). Dr. Ernst wanted the community
to know if the Hmong deviated from the norm of society; it was consider not an acceptable behavior
(Fadiman, 1997, p.79). This statement shows how American doctors thought they had a better
understanding of the needs of children rather than the parents. Although the physicians truly cared
about Lia, it is their frustrations that magnified the cultural barriers, which prevented the Hmong from
collaborating with the physicians in restoring Lia s deteriorating

Overcrowding and Urban Planning in Victorian London Essay
Victorian London in Charles Dickens era was a city suffering under the weight of the masses of people
that lived there. In Dickens time, London was the largest city in the world, both due to its population
increase and the urban sprawl caused by influx of so many people. There were nearly 4 million
inhabitants of the Great City at the height of the Victorian age. This number was an increase of nearly
three million people over a period of approximately 30 years, there were many problems associated
with such explosive growth, problems which were most recognizable during Charles Dickens lifetime.

H. J. Dyos writes in his book, Exploring the Urban Past: Essays in urban history, of the Select
Committee of 1838:
other public benefits might in some cases be derived simultaneously with that principal object ,(1) in
particular the partial clearance of the Rookery of St. Giles by means of an extension of Oxford Street
to Hart Street. They based these conclusions on a mass of evidence they had taken on the desirability
of improved both public health and morals, and they had been regaled by the first hand accounts of the
brutish horrors of slum life in various parts of central London. It was hardly surprising, therefore, that
they insisted that the most important improvements . . . are in direct proportion to the degree in which
they embrace all the great purposes of amendment in respect of health and morals . . . by the removal
of congregations of vice and misery, and the introduction of a better police.(2) (Dyos 86)
As a result of overcrowding, the sanitation issue had to be contended with first and foremost. The
expansion and improvement of the streets, and the expansion of the rail system (including the
Underground) would in turn lead to implementation of the sewer system (which in London emptied
into the Thames.) When new streets were being planned or tramways being laid (for the omnibuses),
the main concern was not for aesthetics, but for sanitation. When questioned by the Royal

Magazines, newspapers, and health blog posts have been talking about the unhealthy consequences of
Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) for many years. The more people grew conscious of what they were
consuming, the more they researched about their food. The usage of Bovine Growth Hormone among
the dairy industries has caught the attention of many consumers. Countless studies that were done
regarding rBGH treated milk only validated the negative effects of rBGH. Cows should not be treated
with rBGH due to the detrimental effects the hormone has on cows health, the potential harmful
effects it can have on consumers due to rampant antibiotic use, and the breaching of autonomy and
rights abuses of the cows treated.
Bovine Somatotropin (BST) is commonly known as Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH). Somatotropin
is a natural hormone produced in the pituitary gland of animals. BST aids in increasing the growth in
young cattles and lactation in milk cows. rBGH is an artificial somatotropin hormone that is created
through recombinant biotechnology. When rBGH is administered to milk cows, the milk production of
the cows increase by 10 to 15 percent (USDA, 2009). Injecting the cows with rBGH forces the cows
to lactate more which makes them more vulnerable to mastitis (udder infection). Mastitis causes the
cows to secrete pus from their udder, hence, pus incorporated milk. Monsanto s data

Examples Of Motif In The Miracle Worker
Motif in The Miracle Worker The book The Miracle Worker is about a young girl, Helen Keller, who
was diagnosed as blind, deaf, and mute when she was 19 months old. Helen s family doesn t know
how to help her, so they hire Annie Sullivan to come and try to teach her. Helen had no discipline and
got away with almost anything, such as throwing tantrums, locking Annie in a room, and eating off of
other people s plate with her hands. Helen s family often doubted Annie and her ability to teach Helen,
but she still had hope for her. Annie insisted on getting two full weeks alone with Helen to teach her
discipline and to spell. When Helen s family finally got to see her again, Annie bragged about how
much progress she had made, but at dinner Helen acted up again. Annie took Helen outside to the
water pump and she spelled water. Helen finally understood that the finger game meant something.
One motif that fit this story is keys/locks. Two examples of this motif are Annie locking her and Helen
in the house alone for two weeks and how understanding that things had names was the key to Helen s
communication. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were locked into spending two weeks alone with each other. Annie knew that the only way to

I only today saw what has to be done, to begin! I want complete charge of her. I ll have to live with
her somewhere else. Till she learns to depend on and listen to me. This quote shows Annie s
perseverance towards wanting time alone with Helen and how much she believes it will help. Annie

Hannah Arendt Minority Treaties
Hannah Arendt s begins the chapter with the first part of after the fall of the First World War stating
the condition of the stateless people clarified the catastrophe of the nation state model and the failure
of human rights. When the nation system was created, the people in power in Europe separated the
people into 3 major groups which are the state people, the nationalities like the Slovaks in
Czechoslovakia, and the minorities like the Germans, being the strongest officially economically and
in number. The Minority Treaties were created by the League of Nations to seek security to the
minority groups in the new states. The real significance of the Minority Treaties (pg.274) was that
currently millions of people were known by the international law since by the nation states, they have
the power to strip down the citizens of that state by banishment or other worse factors. Only nationals

A Research Project On The Fund Essay
About The Fund
The fund was launched on 10th June 2010 which is currently being managed by Harish Zaveri1 and
the overseas investments are managed by Jay Kothari. Over the past three years the fund asset under
management has increased from INR 361 crores in December 2012 to INR 1,177 crores as on
December 2015. The fund is positioned as large cap fund with a focus on selected stocks. It is
currently benchmarked against S P BSE 200.2
Investment Philosophy
The fund philosophy centers on investing mainly into top 200 companies by market capitalization.
However, the fund manager would also take exposure to a maximum of 20% of net asset value into
companies beyond these top 200 companies by market capitalization. The fund manager intends to use
both top down and bottom up approach of stock selection as well as sector identification for potential
investment. The fund mandates to invest 95% of its assets (excluding investments in debt securities,
money market securities and cash and cash equivalents) across the top 25 holdings in the Portfolio.
The fund also intends to invest in debt securities and has the flexibility to take exposure into
ADR/GDR and Foreign Securities.
ANALYSIS
Market Capitalization
The fund stands true to its mandate for having most of its exposure into large cap. A quick look at the
market cap trend shows the average allocation towards the large cap spectrum over the last 1 year has

The development of horse riding accessories helping in warfare leading to the earliest form of the

modern day technology and the inventions throughout history. The use of something such as the
Stirrup that now seems so small would eventually lead to the then unimaginable creation of long
distance communication that is now something within our lives that we could not imagine being

When this problem was brought to the attention of a certain French scientist and mathematician,
Blaise Pascal, he and Otto von Guericke did several experiments with suction which eventually led to
the discovery of the vacuum. This discovery of the vacuum led to the discovery of something we live
with every single day, electricity. The discovery of electricity was due to another French astronomer,
Jean Picard, who was carrying a mercury filled barometer back to his observatory. What is now known
as Barometric light was the astounding glow that was coming from the barometer as Jean Picard was
carrying it, he later discovers it was his hand rubbing against the glass that had caused such a reaction

Homosexuality In Alfred Hitchcock s Film
As Hitchcock s career took him to Hollywood, in 1939, as did his productions take him into dealing
with different issues as previously had been featured in his films. Amongst the controversial few,
homosexuality was a topic subtly explored. At the time of production, the Motion Picture Production
Code forbade the depiction or any direct reference to homosexuality. In addition, the United States had
a universally poor view on homosexuals, much due to the fact that homosexuality was considered a
mental disorder, until 1974, by psychiatrists. Even still, Hitchcock took the public s viewpoint and
capitalized on that within many of his films to exploit homosexuals in a negative fashion. The Motion
Picture Production Code, at least from 1930 to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first glance, yes, it is true that he did not represent homosexuals in a positive light rarely ever (and
if he did, the characters were not important or completely relevant to the story line.) But, out of all of
this, it could be argued in some way that Hitchcock could definitely have been a homosexual himself.
Hitchcock is credited with saying, You know, if I hadn t met Alma at the right time, I could have
become a [homosexual]. It has been noted that a young Hitchcock had an affinity towards The Picture
of Dorian Gray. This novel, by Oscar Wilde, is said to have influenced Hitchcock s directing in a way
that no other work of literature had or ever would. Quotes from Hitchcock, such as, Everything s
perverted in a different way, and, Each man kills the thing he loves, all relate back to the classic Oscar
Wilde ideals. Of course, it is known that Oscar Wilde was a homosexual man and lead one to gather
that because Hitchcock was so taken with Wilde s novel, that Hitchcock s interest in homosexuality
stemmed beyond that of a heterosexual male. Hitchcock blatantly expressed, as quoted above, the
possibility that he was not heterosexual. In addition, he also believed in the fact that perversion was a
universal school of thought. Homosexuality, being a perversion, then was validated in his eyes as
being something completely normal. To attempt to analyze Hitchcock from a

The Theory And Identity Theory, And Deal With The Multiple...
To quote Karl Popper, Every solution to a problem, raises another unsolved problem (Williams, 2003,
p. 2). It has been a topic debated for centuries, still, a definitive solution is yet to be found that
universally satisfies the problem of mind brain identity. The most logical answer comes in the form of
monism. Therefore in this paper I will argue that the mind and the brain are identical, as the mind
exists only as a property of the brain. David Lewis and D.M Armstrong give support for the causal
relationship between mind and brain states in the form of the identity theory, and deal with the
multiple realisability argument provided by Hillary Putman. Gottlob Frege provides his support for
materialism by showing that mental states are determined by the function of the brain, while
discounting Thomas Nagel s argument which proposes the idea of Qualia. Both the functionalist
theory and identity theory reach agreement on the materialistic view that the mind and brain are of the
same substance.
The Identity theory maintains a monistic belief by considering states of mind as being
indistinguishable to brain states. Mental experiences including feeling pain, and possessing mental
images are not correlated with, but in fact are brain processes (Smart, 2007). When dealing with the
question of whether the mind and brain are identical, identity theorists differentiate between two
forms, Type Identity and Token Identity (Schneider). Token Identity theory considers that mental

The Digital World Is Affecting Today s Youth
Sandra Boyd analyzes how nearly ubiquitous access to the digital world is affecting today s youth in It
s Complicated. She explains how the app generation is struggling to self identify and successfully
leverage the Internet to be app enabled. Youth s app dependency is a result of access to digital
technology and social media at an early age, and is preventing youth from properly self identifying
themselves. This, in turn, is affecting how they build relationships and how they think creatively. The
online community our group has decided to look into is the PCMasterRace subreddit. This subreddit is
a community of PC gamers sharing information about computer hardware, post creative and visually
appealing computer configurations (called builds or rigs ) and post satirical or funny pictures about
trending topics. Reddit provides a platform for people with unique special interests (i.e. PC s) to

where creative ideas can be expressed openly.

that playing at suboptimal graphics settings on their consoles make for a better atmosphere and an

To What Extent Did the Revolutions of 1848-9 Fail in Italy...
The failures of 1848 9 could be blamed on the poor leadership of Individuals such as Charles Albert
and Mazzini. However there are other contributing factors that should be taken into account.
Although Charles Albert seems to be successful in uniting the states of Italy to strengthen his
campaign, for example, by joining Lombardy and Venetia with Piedmont and merging their armies
into one in 1848, and aiding the rebels in Lombardy, his poor leadership effected the outcome of the
1848 9 Revolutions. Albert was uncomfortable with non Piedmontese revolutionaries and made them
swear an oath of loyalty to Piedmont, nor would he accept volunteers from other states in his army.

However poor leadership was not the only aspect holding the revolutionaries back.
A lack of unity was preventing the states of Italy from making any significant progress.
The failure of Revolutions in Naples and Sicily, for example, were due to the fact that the
revolutionaries in Naples split into moderates and radicals. These two groups, even though they both
wanted to expel the foreign occupying country Austria, were divided in their aims. Whilst the liberals
believed that a constitution was necessary, the Radicals favoured republics. Their inability to work
together and their separate aims resulted in Failure. In Piedmont, Charles Albert would not accept
volunteers from other states in his army, or work with any other revolutionary groups, unless they
declared their loyalty to Piedmont.
A lack of unity further led to a lack of central guidance. There was no universally acceptable national
leader who could co ordinate policy, Pope Pius IX had declined the position of Head of Italy, and
neither Mazzini or Charles Albert were acceptable for everyone. ~Local revolutionary leaders had no
central guidance to rule by and the separate states were all divided, setting up provisional governments
of their own chosen methods; extremist, liberal, radical, democratic or monarchist.

Radioactive Sickness
Causative Agent: A total body exposure of one hundred roentgens of radiation will cause radiation
sickness. Although certain medical devices will give you exposure to radiation, the grays of radiation
are miniscule and will not cause radiation sickness. There are a few sources that can lead to a high
enough exposure of roentgens of radiation. One of these sources involves accidents or attacks
involving nuclear facilities. The other has to do with accidents or being the target of radioactive or

Radiation in the body is measured by total body exposure; that being the total combine radiation
source of outside and inside the body. Radiation sickness occurs when ionized radiation damages or
destroys cells in your body. The areas of the body most susceptible to radiation are cells in the lining
of your intestinal tract which include your stomach, and the hematopoietic cells in bone marrow.
There are two main types of radiation sickness acute and chronic. Symptoms/ Diagnosis: The
symptoms of acute radiation sickness vary based on the exposure. A mild exposure is one to two
grays, the symptoms of this included nausea and vomiting within six hours. A moderate exposure of
two to six grays, the symptom of a mild exposure will be increased to within two hours with the added
symptoms of diarrhea, headache, and fever. All of the symptoms of mild exposure will happen with
twenty four hours. Severe exposure of six to eight grays will increase the onset of moderate exposure
symptoms to within four hours. A very severe exposure, which is eight to ten grays and higher will
result in the symptoms occurring within two hours, with the beginning symptoms in about 10 minutes,
as well as new symptoms which include dizziness, disorientation, and fatigue. With the later
symptoms of the sickness most exposures will led to dizziness, disorientation, and fatigue ranging

Katrina And Hurricane Katrina Similarities
It has been over a decade that we witnessed the catastrophe that wreaked havoc on New Orleans. That
infamous catastrophe is popularly known as Hurricane Katrina. However, in recent news it appears
that we have another disastrous hurricane within our midst. Hurricane Harvey has since devastated the
state of Texas, and more specifically the large city of Houston. This article helps to detail the
comparisons between the two hurricanes. Although Hurricane Harvey is still in effect, there are many
similarities and differences that we can already see between it and Hurricane Katrina. One main
difference is the cities population sizes; while New Orleans had an estimated 455,000 people, Houston
has a population of two million people. The city of New Orleans also resided below sea level. The
precautions to hurricanes were also very unique. For New Orleans there was an issued mandatory
evacuation a day before the storm made landfall. Although, there was an evacuation about 100,00
people remained stuck in the city. However, for Houston there was no evacuation issued, civilians
were simply encouraged to take shelter. A few days after Harvey made landfall, people were then
urged to leave the area. One similarity is that both of the cities had systems to keep from possible
flooding. New Orleans had a system of levee walls and Houston had a system of waterways and
bayous. When Hurricane Katrina made landfall near the Louisiana and Mississippi border, it was

League. The film devotes most of its attention to the story of Mike Webster, who died at the age of
fifty as a result of severe brain injuries suffered throughout his playing career. Webster s story
highlights the devastating effect concussions can have in a short timeframe. Because brain injuries are
known to develop quickly it is important that the NFL responds quickly to this concussion crisis. The
NFL is the most popular professional sports league in the world: according to Forbes Magazine the
NFL generated over $9 billion in revenue this past year. Despite this success the NFL faces a
legitimate threat against brain injuries and concussions. Although the NFL is popular, they should still
be proactive in their fight against concussions because of the amount of money they generate, the
health of their former players, and lastly the willingness of future athletes to play their sport.
The NFL continues to remain the most lucrative professional league. According to Forbes Magazine
the NFL s 32 teams are worth on average, $1.7 billion, which is more than any other sports league. In
contrast the world s top 20 soccer teams have an average value of $976 million. The NFL has been

The Princess Bride Quotes
There are many characters in the book Princess Bride by S. Morgenstern. Some which are evil, some
which are brave, but the real hero in the story is Westley. Westley saves buttercup twice and he also
stops Humperdinck s evil plans that he was going to put forth after the wedding. Westly is the true
hero of the story because he is brave and is always willing to help even if he is in bad condition. For
example, when Buttercup was captured by Vizzini he went and saved her. He went and fought a giant,
and really good sword fighter and even Vizzini himself. Wesley had taught himself to drink a poison
liquid, but still be able to survive. He fought and put his life in danger just to save Buttercup. Westley
trained himself to sword fight very well, because when he fought Indigo, he won even though Indigo
is a very well sword fighter. Westley also won to the giant Fezzik. Though the giant was much larger
than Westley, Westley still won because of the training he had done. This shows, Westley is very brave
and was determined to save Buttercup. This is one of the great hero things Westley did in the book. ...

The House Of Mirth By Edith Wharton
In The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, Lily Bart is a woman with a gambling problem who further
anticipates to marry a man of vast fortune by going to parties. In The Great Gatsby by Scott F.
Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby is a wealthy man who gained his wealth through criminal activity and throws
parties. In between the both of these novels and the worlds of the two characters, the common themes
of wealth and marriage are shared. Lily and Jay have similar characteristics: Jay uses his wealth to
impress and Lily is interested in marrying a man for his fortune, but turns down eligible bachelors
because she feels that she can do better. Perhaps it d be in both of their best interests to marry each
other. The theme of marriage in The Great Gatsby is portrayed differently than it is in The House of
Mirth. Being that the two books were originally written in the early 1900s, the values of both wealth
and marriage are similar and dissimilar to that of modern times. The way that marriage in The Great
Gatsby appears as is that despite the fact that the spouses happen to be unfaithful to one another, a
sense of loyalty remains present. For example, Daisy Buchanan, Jay Gatsby s love interest, is married
to Tom. Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, who is also married to someone else. The ironic
turn of events occurs when Tom suspects that Daisy and Jay are the ones that are having an affair.

Snow Ann Beattie
Snow is a short story in which Ann Beattie, the author, presents an often unheard of view of her lover.
The main character, experiences the heart warming of love towards her lover rather than the desolation
of loneliness after her lover doesn t come back. Later, when the lady learns that her lover is still out
there, she knows that all hope of her lover coming back is still there. The crushing disappointment
kills her that her lover just left her out there all alone for the winter. Published in the earlier where love
was so true and courageous, the oppressive narrated nature of love in Snow may well be a reflection of
their love to each other. Though Beattie relates the women s story, she does not do so in first person.
Beattie reveals the story through a narrator s voice. The narrator is not simply an observer, however.
The narrator shows that the woman, for the most part, is madly in love. (paragraph 1). It is obvious
that the narrator knows more than can be physically observed. Beattie, however, never tells the reader
what really happens between her lover and her. Instead, the reader must look into the women s actions
and words in order to understand what the women feels. The main character is held back by the
feelings she had towards her lover but he didn t feel the same. The lines of her expressions cold settled
in stages, that small curve of light was shaved from the moon night after night, until you were no
longer surprised the sky was black, that

The Elements Of Style By Strunk And White
The Elements of Style by Strunk and White introduction to philosophy is that a writer should be brief
and concise with their words. The most important rule of style in Strunk and White element of style is
omit needless words! This means that a sentence should not contain anything extra. E. B. White
describes him as someone that puts his heart and soul with rules of usage. He is very dedicated to
writing and wrote down the commonly misused words in a book to help people learn the English
language better.
The first rule I read was, Enclose parenthetic expressions between commas. An example of rule one is
February to July, 1992. (E.B White 2) Rule number two is place a comma before for a conjugation
introducing and independent clause, such as I have heard the arguments, but am still unconvinced. (E.
B White 5) my last rule is, Do not join independent clauses with a comma. Such as, Mary Shelley s
works are entertaining. They are full of engaging ideas. (E. B White 6) I mastered this rule by
rereading and understanding the passage I read. Afterwards, my mother would write five sentences
and I would have to correct them. If I got one question wrong, I would have to redo it. I did this
process about six to eight times and finally afterwards, I mastered it.
The first point I found intriguing was the use of active voice. My thought towards this is that the
habitual use makes this vigorous. Active Voice means that it is an unmarked word. This is usually used

Greek Philosopher Plotinus s Enneads
Delaina Storey Pope Huma 1315 February 2, 2016 Enneads 1.6 by Plotinus Summary In Volume 6 of
Enneads, the Greek philosopher Plotinus gives his standpoint on what defines beauty. This passage is
noteworthy because of the way it contradicts the aesthetics of his day and age. Plotinus begins by
asking his audience to consider what beauty is. He offers the example of some things being beautiful
by the nature of the objects themselves, and something instead are beautiful by participation, such as
being virtuous (Plotinus 1). He prompts the audience to ask themselves whether beauty is sensory
since one may see or hear things they consider beautiful, what catches the attention of someone
ultimately leading to a feeling of attraction to certain things (Plotinus 1)? ... Show more content on

Plotinus refers to the other philosophers of his time stating, nearly everyone says that it is good
proportion of the parts to the whole, with the addition of the parts to the whole, with the addition of
good colour which produces visible beauty... and defines being beautiful as being well proportioned
and measured (Plotinus 1). Plotinus first rebuttal is, if beauty lies in being well proportioned, then it is
the parts put together properly that makes something beautiful so that the parts themselves would not
hold any beauty. He illustrates this by stating the parts will not have the property of beauty by
themselves, but will contribute to the beauty of the whole. He gives examples of simple parts that are
beautiful on their own such as, though an entire song is beautiful, one note may hold beauty all the
same (Plotinus 1). Plotinus strengthens his argument by asking where knowledge and virtue, two
beautiful things, were to fit into the common Greek aesthetic. Knowledge and virtue cannot be of
good proportion yet we still consider these beautiful, do we not (Plotinus

Mandatory Physical Education Research Paper
The number of obese children more than tripled since 1971. Physical education should be a mandatory
class, because at least one in three children in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Obesity is causing a
huge amount of health problems that previously weren t seen until adulthood. If all children had PE
class every day, it would help reduce the number of children affected by obesity and children would
develop a habit of daily physical exercise. Some health problems obese kids are getting can be very
serious. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood pressure. Obese
children commonly have a lower self esteem , negative body image and depression. Physical
education is an essential part of growing and learning, not just the physical part is takes a big roll on
academic as well. Without Physical education in schools, children would have trouble learning about
other things such as math or science. Physical activity stimulates the minds of young children and
keeps them on the ball when learning new things.

The Big Advantage
One of the big advantage is that they can be less expensive compared to other way of measuring the
pH.This means that it helps to reduce the amount of money needed to do the test. This is because you
can buy pack of them for much lower price than a Hi98103 hanna, which cost lot more money to buy
one of them compared to litmus paper. Another advantage is that it is very easy to use and this means
that you do not need a training for you to use it and because it is less complicated means that anyone
can use it without struggle.Whereas, with hi98103 the person need to ensure that they know how to
use this properly , if not there is chance of getting the wrong result. This means people that are trained
could only use them correctly and this limits people who could use whereas, litmus paper anyone can
carry out the test using them. Another advantage is that they do not require a battery and this means
that you do not need to buy a battery to make it work and you do not need to worry about battery
running out or replace the battery after it s used.Whereas , with hi98103 you need battery and this
means that you need to ensure that it is working before using and if it is not working then you need to
replace the battery too. Also if the battery run out during the test meant that you have to repeat the test
again to ensure the result is correct and this will take up time to do.Whereas, you do not have to worry
about the battery running out. Another advantage is that they are portable

Analysis Of The Book Watchmen By Dave Gibbons
Watchmen written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons utilizes the literary tool of symbols
to connect ideas and themes. Time is a major theme throughout the comic and plays a significant part
in the structure and outcome of the story. This theme is successfully coupled to the theme of destiny
by the use of the clock and other symbols that are present throughout the comic. Symbols such as
clocks, the smiley pin, and the graffiti are utilized to efficiently connect the themes of time, justice and
the loss of innocence and morality throughout Watchmen. The combination of all of these themes
ultimately allude to Ozymandias decision to unleash chaos on Manhattan by foreshadowing his
betrayal and explaining how impossible it is to entrench the peace that he has manufactured by
unleashing this chaos. The clocks in Watchmen are used to foreshadow crucial future events and
connect the themes of morality and time. Other than the literal connection between calling themselves
Watchmen and recurring images of actual watches, doomsday clocks and time in general plays a huge
part in the arc of the comic s storyline. This is because of the impending destruction that the world is
to face at the hands of Ozymandias. Doctor Manhattan s father was a watchmaker before learning that
time is irrelevant and therefore useless. Jon himself finds this out through his own experience with
time and seeing back and forth through it. This is particularly important because the whole reason he

Space Travel Persuasive Essay
Humans have always been interested in space and the wonder in which it may hold. In the past,
humans worshiped the stars as if they were gods while also studying their position to give them
guidance for their lives. Their interested in space has fathered the desire to know more. Today, space
has been seen by many as the new frontier or the home beyond earth. Society have even taken a step
forward through the creation of stories in books and movies based of the idea of humans living in
space and the present of alliances. Yet there is still controversy on the need to continue space
exploration when our own planet has so many detrimental problems. There is an ongoing debate on
whether not the money used for space travel could be better beneficially use for other causes. It is true
that space exploration costs billions of dollars a year alone according to NASA current budget, which
is constantly increasing. However, what many refuses to understand is that without space exploration
many of the innovations that we have today would not have existed. While there have been, many
failed attempts involving space exploration that has caused a tremendous amount of money to go
down the drain. However, many people fail to realize the benefits of space exploration and the

  • 2. How Did Charles White Influence The Civil Rights Movement Charles White Jr. was born in Chicago on April 2, 1918 to the parents of Ethel Gary and Charles White Sr. At a young age, White realized his passion for art and was only fueled more when one day after school he met art students from the Art Institute of Chicago who taught him how to mix paint. Not too long after did White begin to skip school because of discrimination and got a job working for the Regal Theater, meeting many other black artists who influenced him to be an artist; White was even able to attend a class at the Art Institution. Two years later when he was sixteen, he met many artists, poets and intellectuals who exposed him to many new ideas at a party and was greatly impacted by the philosophy New Negro, a term implying a refusal to submit to racial laws and dignity for black people. He won a full time scholarship at the Art Institute where he joined the Arts and Crafts Guilds and became a Work in Progress artist (a form of relief for people who needed paying jobs) (White). Due to that, White s artwork focused on the history, culture and life of black people in America. White s purpose to his artwork was for black people to take pride in their culture. One work of his Study Wall shows a young black woman looking confidently at the viewer. He portrayed the black people in his works with the dignity and respect they deserved. The largest part of the market s recent growth (from 2005 to the present) is undeniably due in part to the video game console created by Microsoft called the Xbox 360. Microsoft was the first company to release what is called the current generation console, and successfully beat Sony out of the gate. Prior to the release of the Xbox 360, Sony had dominated the market with their console, the PlayStation 2. It is because of Microsoft s ongoing innovations to enhance player interactivity and large game catalogue (especially those with record breaking sales) is why they are the dominant ... The technology created by Microsoft for their Xbox 360 is the first of its kind. A perfect example is a device called the Kinect. This device utilizes a microphone and multiple cameras to enhance gamers experience, especially for game titles like Dance Central. Kinect utilizes motion detection in order to spot interaction and display it on the screen accordingly. Another function for the device is voice recognition. Rather than using a controller, the player can simply speak the commands and the Xbox will do the said action. But the use for the Kinect has also extended far beyond its gaming origins, spurring advances in medical treatment. (Knight) Using the Kinect for real world applications, including making medical diagnoses or three dimensional modeling was an unintended side effect of the Kinect when it was released. • 4. Teenage Girls And Teenagest Pressure From Advertisers To... The problem I am addressing is how to help teenage girls resist pressure from advertisers to look thin. I will be proposing ways to change people s specific attitudes and behaviors that will potentially close a gap between what is happening and what should be happening. The goal is not to educate or increase awareness about this issue because it is a very widely talked about topic. The problem is that teenage girls (who) should not be peer pressured to look thin (what) in today s (when) society (where). What is happening today is that teenage girls have this societal pressure to look thin. This is mostly due to companies and advertisers putting out campaigns with smaller, thinner models and celebrities. With the rise of technology, people are becoming more and more influenced by what they see on television, the Internet, and social media. Teenage girls see these beautiful, thin celebrities and aspire to look like that. Girls are more vulnerable than ever today and some will do just about anything to give in to the pressure and try to look like someone else. What should be happening is that companies and advertisers should use a more diverse group of woman when putting out campaigns. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. They should be embracing the diversity throughout the world and show that off when advertising. This is impacting mostly teenage girls as their bodies are changing and as they are trying to figure out who they are. However, this pressure is not just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout both the book and film, both characters were going through drastic changes in life. In the play, Pygmalion, Eliza Doolittle, living in London England, was considered an illiterate, poor girl. Eliza is a girl that stands at a flower shop and sells flowers. • 10. The Natural Family Planning ( Safe Period ) 3 Natural family planning ( safe period): Natural family planning is one of the most widely utilized means of birth control, espicially for those whom their religion or their cultural beliefs do not authorize devices or drugs for birth control. This method includes periodic abstinence, to avoid intercourse during a female s fertile period, which is around the time of ovulation. Determination of the fertile period involve the calendar method, cervical mucus method, or the symptothermal method technique. The calendar method is based on 3 hypotheses as follows: The human ovum can be fertilized only for approximately 24 hours after ovulation, spermatozoa can maintain their ability of fertilizing for only 48 hours after coitus, and ovulation usually occurs 12 16 days before the onset of the subsequent menestruation. The menses is recorded for 6 cycles to estimate the fertile period. The earliest day of the fertile period is calculated by the number of days in the shortest menstrual cycle subtracted by 18. The latest day of the fertile period is assessed by the number of days in the longest cycle subtracted by 11. * Efficacy: The failure rate in typical utilization is estimated to be approximately 25%. * Advantages: No adverse effects from hormones occur. What emerged in its place was a newfound appreciation of the ordinary and the real, in a nostalgic revival of the pre industrial world through depicting the life and work of peasants . The temporal and contextual proximity of romanticism, realism and their affiliated stylistic subsets culminate with widespread influence throughout Europe, providing some explanation for potential similarities in subject matter and aesthetics. One of the key parallels between the romantics and the realists is their departure from urban living to regional, sparsely populated areas favouring natural settings, once again emphasising the connection between people and the environment . However, the visual consideration of this relationship is approached in different ways, and this is the pivotal point of divergence from romanticism to realism. The realist movement, with its empathetic and attentive depictions of farmers, labourers and the working class in general, marked a new appreciation of simple, wholesome and humble living as opposed to grand narratives of mythology and history or dramatic and formidable landscapes which largely ... This system will enable all the students either form upper, middle, or lower class who are smart to enter top universities, such Harvard. On the other hand, he said for Black people they had a lot of disadvantages, including barriers to property accumulation. THE DRAMATIC SIGNIFICANCE OF SICK CHARACTERS IN OLA ROTIMI S PLAYS Odia Clement Eloghosa ABSTRACT In this paper, the sick characters are studied through the examination of their dramatic significance and contributions to the development of Ola Rotimi s drama. Three aspects of dramatic significance are identified in this paper and we argue that the sick: (1) act as witness and help the healthy establish truth, (2) create crisis situations that stir up diverse emotions in the audience, and finally, (3) heighten dramatic tension which boosts the degree of suspense in the plays. Osofisan, examining the political imperative in African dramaturgy and theatre practice, makes some passing comments on the sick in Hopes, a play he considers as belonging to the tradition of socialist theatre and posits that the aim of the sick in that play is to teach our masses the virtue of collective struggle, the irrelevance of tribal differences in face of common economic exploitation and the possibility of heroism among the poor and down trodden (5). On his part, Akinosho, reviewing the performance of Rasheed Gbadamosi s Behold My Redeemer, a play directed by Ola Rotimi, and which has a psychiatric setting, makes brief comments on Rotimi s portrayal of sick characters. Both Lia s parents and health care providers want the best for Lia Lee, but due to a lack of understanding and cultural barriers, result in the tragedy of Lia. Western ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adjusting to the Hmong s new homeland has not been easy for them. Traditional Hmong beliefs regarding healing and curing of disease differ greatly from those of the Western culture. Western medicine relies heavily on a medical process in which a specific technique corrects a specific problem by treatment. Health is the absence of disease and measures the individual s adaptation to an environment. On the other hand, Hmong believe illness is associated with spiritual causes. For instance, when Lia was three month ago, she had an epileptic seizure in which Lia s mother Foua, and her father, Nao Kao, called the episode the spirit catches you and you fall down (Fadiman, 1997, p.20). According to Lia s parents, it was a spiritual illness which Lia s soul had fled out of her body (Fadiman, 1997, p. 21). On the other hand, Dr. Dan Murphy, who practiced Western medicine, diagnosed Lia Lee with epilepsy. The Ethnocentrism is the judging of other cultures by the standards of one s own culture (Miller, Esterik, Esterik, 2004, p. 11). Therefore, all other ways of doing things are considered inferior and unnatural. For instances, when Dr. Neil Ernst expressed that he felt it was important for the Hmong to understand that there were certain elements of medicine and that the doctors understood better than the Hmong did (Fadiman, 1997, p.79). Dr. Ernst wanted the community to know if the Hmong deviated from the norm of society; it was consider not an acceptable behavior (Fadiman, 1997, p.79). This statement shows how American doctors thought they had a better understanding of the needs of children rather than the parents. Although the physicians truly cared about Lia, it is their frustrations that magnified the cultural barriers, which prevented the Hmong from collaborating with the physicians in restoring Lia s deteriorating ... The Scenes Of Your Cup Of Milk Christine Lee Professor Lynn Dowdy Biology 100 16 October 2015 Behind the Scenes of Your Cup of Milk Magazines, newspapers, and health blog posts have been talking about the unhealthy consequences of Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) for many years. The more people grew conscious of what they were consuming, the more they researched about their food. The usage of Bovine Growth Hormone among the dairy industries has caught the attention of many consumers. Countless studies that were done regarding rBGH treated milk only validated the negative effects of rBGH. Cows should not be treated with rBGH due to the detrimental effects the hormone has on cows health, the potential harmful effects it can have on consumers due to rampant antibiotic use, and the breaching of autonomy and rights abuses of the cows treated. Bovine Somatotropin (BST) is commonly known as Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH). Somatotropin is a natural hormone produced in the pituitary gland of animals. BST aids in increasing the growth in young cattles and lactation in milk cows. rBGH is an artificial somatotropin hormone that is created through recombinant biotechnology. When rBGH is administered to milk cows, the milk production of the cows increase by 10 to 15 percent (USDA, 2009). Injecting the cows with rBGH forces the cows to lactate more which makes them more vulnerable to mastitis (udder infection). Amongst the controversial few, homosexuality was a topic subtly explored. At the time of production, the Motion Picture Production Code forbade the depiction or any direct reference to homosexuality. In addition, the United States had a universally poor view on homosexuals, much due to the fact that homosexuality was considered a mental disorder, until 1974, by psychiatrists. Hitchcock is credited with saying, You know, if I hadn t met Alma at the right time, I could have become a [homosexual]. It has been noted that a young Hitchcock had an affinity towards The Picture of Dorian Gray. • 31. The Theory And Identity Theory, And Deal With The Multiple... To quote Karl Popper, Every solution to a problem, raises another unsolved problem (Williams, 2003, p. 2). It has been a topic debated for centuries, still, a definitive solution is yet to be found that universally satisfies the problem of mind brain identity. The most logical answer comes in the form of monism. Therefore in this paper I will argue that the mind and the brain are identical, as the mind exists only as a property of the brain. David Lewis and D.M Armstrong give support for the causal relationship between mind and brain states in the form of the identity theory, and deal with the multiple realisability argument provided by Hillary Putman. Gottlob Frege provides his support for materialism by showing that mental states are determined by the function of the brain, while discounting Thomas Nagel s argument which proposes the idea of Qualia. Both the functionalist theory and identity theory reach agreement on the materialistic view that the mind and brain are of the same substance. The Identity theory maintains a monistic belief by considering states of mind as being indistinguishable to brain states. Mental experiences including feeling pain, and possessing mental images are not correlated with, but in fact are brain processes (Smart, 2007). When dealing with the question of whether the mind and brain are identical, identity theorists differentiate between two forms, Type Identity and Token Identity (Schneider). Token Identity theory considers that mental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although Charles Albert seems to be successful in uniting the states of Italy to strengthen his campaign, for example, by joining Lombardy and Venetia with Piedmont and merging their armies into one in 1848, and aiding the rebels in Lombardy, his poor leadership effected the outcome of the 1848 9 Revolutions. These two groups, even though they both wanted to expel the foreign occupying country Austria, were divided in their aims. Whilst the liberals believed that a constitution was necessary, the Radicals favoured republics. Their inability to work together and their separate aims resulted in Failure. One main difference is the cities population sizes; while New Orleans had an estimated 455,000 people, Houston has a population of two million people. The city of New Orleans also resided below sea level. The precautions to hurricanes were also very unique. For New Orleans there was an issued mandatory evacuation a day before the storm made landfall. Although, there was an evacuation about 100,00 people remained stuck in the city. However, for Houston there was no evacuation issued, civilians were simply encouraged to take shelter. A few days after Harvey made landfall, people were then urged to leave the area. Thus, in the organizational framework, distributive justice refers to the perceived fairness of resource allocation in respect to the balance between employees contributions and rewards (Lee, 2001). • 41. Analysis Of Lps Schemes Can Be Categorized From Different... 2.2 LPS Classification Due to their diversity, LPS schemes can be categorized from different perspectives .The classification could be based on various criteria like methodology, dependency on equipment s, operating scenarios, targeted users and outputs. Here we categorize indoor localization systems along three dimensions. First, we consider the output of a localization system which is usually generalized as locations or positions, but actually could be divided into different groups. Most common outputs include: Absolute positions: Positions with coordinate s information which could be directly mapped to physical space. The absolute location could either be represented in discrete space as cells or grids or in continuous space ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the absolute positions of RP are known, the absolute position of user could be given. Inertial navigation system (INS): A common navigation method widely used on vehicles like ships and aircrafts which continuously calculate the position and orientation of objects by dead reckoning (DR) without the need of external RP. Signaturing: System utilizing user identifications or spatial signatures corresponding to environmental characteristics or artificial landmarks to localize, which could be based on various technologies including RFID, motion detections, optoacoustic and humiture sensors. Fingerprinting: Constructing a fingerprint map which would be queried explicitly for localization. Often referred as but different from signaturing, fingerprinting provides finer grained mapping of fingerprints to absolute positions instead of logical positions. The vast development of mobile computing, wireless and sensing technologies provides various platforms and tools for localization systems for general or specific scenarios, and fertilize the diversity of LPS. It is necessary to examine technologies and platforms that localization systems are based on. A commonly used platform for LPS includes: Sensors: The most diverse and abundant group of technologies found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Snow Ann Beattie Snow is a short story in which Ann Beattie, the author, presents an often unheard of view of her lover. The main character, experiences the heart warming of love towards her lover rather than the desolation of loneliness after her lover doesn t come back. Later, when the lady learns that her lover is still out there, she knows that all hope of her lover coming back is still there. The crushing disappointment kills her that her lover just left her out there all alone for the winter. Published in the earlier where love was so true and courageous, the oppressive narrated nature of love in Snow may well be a reflection of their love to each other. Though Beattie relates the women s story, she does not do so in first person. Beattie reveals the story through a narrator s voice. The narrator is not simply an observer, however. The narrator shows that the woman, for the most part, is madly in love. (paragraph 1). It is obvious that the narrator knows more than can be physically observed. Beattie, however, never tells the reader what really happens between her lover and her. Instead, the reader must look into the women s actions and words in order to understand what the women feels. The main character is held back by the feelings she had towards her lover but he didn t feel the same. The lines of her expressions cold settled in stages, that small curve of light was shaved from the moon night after night, until you were no longer surprised the sky was black, that ... • 43. The Elements Of Style By Strunk And White The Elements of Style by Strunk and White introduction to philosophy is that a writer should be brief and concise with their words. The most important rule of style in Strunk and White element of style is omit needless words! This means that a sentence should not contain anything extra. E. B. White describes him as someone that puts his heart and soul with rules of usage. He is very dedicated to writing and wrote down the commonly misused words in a book to help people learn the English language better. The first rule I read was, Enclose parenthetic expressions between commas. An example of rule one is February to July, 1992. (E.B White 2) Rule number two is place a comma before for a conjugation introducing and independent clause, such as I have heard the arguments, but am still unconvinced. (E. B White 5) my last rule is, Do not join independent clauses with a comma. Such as, Mary Shelley s works are entertaining. They are full of engaging ideas. (E. B White 6) I mastered this rule by rereading and understanding the passage I read. Afterwards, my mother would write five sentences and I would have to correct them. If I got one question wrong, I would have to redo it. I did this process about six to eight times and finally afterwards, I mastered it. The first point I found intriguing was the use of active voice. My thought towards this is that the habitual use makes this vigorous. Active Voice means that it is an unmarked word. This is usually used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Greek Philosopher Plotinus s Enneads Delaina Storey Pope Huma 1315 February 2, 2016 Enneads 1.6 by Plotinus Summary In Volume 6 of Enneads, the Greek philosopher Plotinus gives his standpoint on what defines beauty. This passage is noteworthy because of the way it contradicts the aesthetics of his day and age. Plotinus begins by asking his audience to consider what beauty is. He offers the example of some things being beautiful by the nature of the objects themselves, and something instead are beautiful by participation, such as being virtuous (Plotinus 1). He prompts the audience to ask themselves whether beauty is sensory since one may see or hear things they consider beautiful, what catches the attention of someone ultimately leading to a feeling of attraction to certain things (Plotinus 1)? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plotinus refers to the other philosophers of his time stating, nearly everyone says that it is good proportion of the parts to the whole, with the addition of the parts to the whole, with the addition of good colour which produces visible beauty... and defines being beautiful as being well proportioned and measured (Plotinus 1). Plotinus first rebuttal is, if beauty lies in being well proportioned, then it is the parts put together properly that makes something beautiful so that the parts themselves would not hold any beauty. He illustrates this by stating the parts will not have the property of beauty by themselves, but will contribute to the beauty of the whole. He gives examples of simple parts that are beautiful on their own such as, though an entire song is beautiful, one note may hold beauty all the same (Plotinus 1). Plotinus strengthens his argument by asking where knowledge and virtue, two beautiful things, were to fit into the common Greek aesthetic. Knowledge and virtue cannot be of good proportion yet we still consider these beautiful, do we not (Plotinus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Physical education should be a mandatory class, because at least one in three children in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Obesity is causing a huge amount of health problems that previously weren t seen until adulthood. If all children had PE class every day, it would help reduce the number of children affected by obesity and children would develop a habit of daily physical exercise. Some health problems obese kids are getting can be very serious. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood pressure. Obese children commonly have a lower self esteem , negative body image and depression. Physical education is an essential part of growing and learning, not just the physical part is takes a big roll on academic as well. Without Physical education in schools, children would have trouble learning about other things such as math or science. • 47. Analysis Of The Book Watchmen By Dave Gibbons Watchmen written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons utilizes the literary tool of symbols to connect ideas and themes. Time is a major theme throughout the comic and plays a significant part in the structure and outcome of the story. This theme is successfully coupled to the theme of destiny by the use of the clock and other symbols that are present throughout the comic. Symbols such as clocks, the smiley pin, and the graffiti are utilized to efficiently connect the themes of time, justice and the loss of innocence and morality throughout Watchmen. The combination of all of these themes ultimately allude to Ozymandias decision to unleash chaos on Manhattan by foreshadowing his betrayal and explaining how impossible it is to entrench the peace that he has manufactured by unleashing this chaos. The clocks in Watchmen are used to foreshadow crucial future events and connect the themes of morality and time. Other than the literal connection between calling themselves Watchmen and recurring images of actual watches, doomsday clocks and time in general plays a huge part in the arc of the comic s storyline. This is because of the impending destruction that the world is to face at the hands of Ozymandias. Doctor Manhattan s father was a watchmaker before learning that time is irrelevant and therefore useless. Jon himself finds this out through his own experience with time and seeing back and forth through it. This is particularly important because the whole reason he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
