2. Why Slasher?
The chosen genre for our portfolio is slasher. I think the slasher sub genre is the
most exciting. It is a thrilling and sometimes unwatchable, highlighting the amount
of fear it has on its audience. As a group we want to be able to mirror this fear and
through our research into the slasher sub-genre we hope to create a realistic and
spine-chilling trailer, leaving the target audience excited for the release of my film.
Furthermore, through our research into slasher posters, I am interested in
recreating a petrifying killer. He will be just as frightening as the famous Jason
from Friday the 13th, yet myself and my group will put our touch of imagination
into the creation of our antagonist, making him stand out from the rest.
3. Our Inspirational Text:
When deciding which sub-genre we should pick, our group was
instantly lured into slasher. This was due to many of us having
experience into watching many slashers and enjoying the thrill
and rush we got from the violent and brutal killings. As slasher
tends to be so savage and gory, we felt it would be exciting to
add to the competition of many famous texts such as Friday The
13th and Nightmare On Elm Street. However, Texas Chainsaw
Massacre was one of the texts which mainly inspired us to
choose this sub-genre. As through our research into the genre we
found out it was banned in several countries including the UK
1974 due to the film being too violent and sadistic. It caused
outrage and attention by the press, leading to the film being
censored. This inspired us to create a slasher as it highlights how
outrageous and shocking they can be having huge impacts on
audience members.
4. Ideas From Further Inspiration:
Further research into slasher got us excited
to mirror and film footage from existing texts
yet, still make it our own. For example, we
was most excited about creating chase
scenes and piecing together an intense
montage for our trailer. We believed that the
most effective montage scenes were
included in slashers as they produce the
most thrill and excitement as you fear for
your favourite characters safety, in the hope
they get out alive.
Inspiration for our montage scene: Nightmare On Elm
Street. This classic montage gave us the typical
conventions we needed to follow to ensure our
montage was professional and symbolic for a slasher.
5. Early Ideas For Our Antagonist:
We was also excited about the
creation of a fearful, masked
antagonist. The antagonist is the
main focus of the slasher therefore,
we need to ensure we think about the
type of mask and weapon our slasher
will include. As a group some of our
ideas consisted of:
1. A balaclava
2. Hockey Mask
3. A skull mask
For our weapon choice we was all certain
of the use of an axe. This was because
our film would be based in a forest
setting, therefore we thought the choice
of an axe would be perfect. The axe also
allows for a more brutal and savage
attack on the group of teens, and is not
basic such as the use of a knife. We got
our weapon inspiration from Texas
Chainsaw Massacre as the use of a
chainsaw gives room for human
mutilation easily and much more
gruesome, perfect for crazed slasher
fans.
6. Mask And Weapon
Inspiration:
Each of these masks
are symbolic to the
slasher genre, we
wanted our mask to
also be just as
memorable and
iconic, ensuring our
target audience are
feared by it.
Our weapon also
needed to look
dominant and
shocking, just like the
chainsaw.
7. Teenagers:
Another reason we chose the slasher
genre, was the fact that the main
protagonists are usually teenagers.
As myself and group members fall
into this category, we wanted to be
able to construct a trailer which we
could relate too and feel confident
with. We felt we could relate friends to
some of the character roles, allowing
for a more professional and exciting
trailer. We was also excited in making
roles for our characters and creating
these character profiles.
