Subgenre explanation
1. Subgenre Explanation
Our chosen sub-genre is slasher, this sub-genre allows us to express creativity through the
magazine, poster and trailer due to the creative diversity within the genre. The Slasher
genre is one of the most influential and iconic sub-genres, being home to iconic movies such
as ‘Halloween’ and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. Throughout our research and planning we
did an extensive investigation into the array of available sub-genres including supernatural
and gothic; by doing so we were able to explore general conventions and understand what
would be expected of a trailer from the slasher genre.
The overall decision of producing a horror trailer within the slasher sub-genre was
ultimately because we feel as if we are able to deliver realistic and conventional pieces of
work that will attract the target audience consisting of a teenage demographic. After
conducting some research into an array of slasher movies, Wes Craven and James Wan
seem to have produced some of the most famous slasher movies including ‘Saw’ and the
‘Scream’ franchise; as they are inspirational directors we have decided to emulate certain
aspects from their work such as the bold lettering and font that is conventionally used
across the majority of posters from this genre and the blacked out background featured on
a lot of posters including for ‘Scream’, ‘Halloween’ and ‘Dead Silence’.
