During the defects liability period, the contractor typically has the obligation to repair or replace any defects that arise due to faulty workmanship or materials. It's important for all parties involved to clearly define the defects liability period in the construction contract to avoid disputes and ensure that the project meets the required quality standards.
Negotiation: Navigating the Art and Science
Negotiation is an intricate dance, a delicate interplay of skills, strategies, and communication. Whether it's sealing a business deal, resolving conflicts, or navigating personal relationships, the art of negotiation is a crucial life skill.
1. Understanding the Basics:
Negotiation is not merely about getting what you want. It involves finding common ground, fostering relationships, and creating win-win scenarios. The process typically unfolds in stages - preparation, discussion, clarification of goals, negotiation, and agreement. Each stage demands attention and finesse.
2. Preparation is Key:
Successful negotiators invest time in understanding their own objectives and the other party's interests. Thorough research, knowledge of market conditions, and awareness of potential obstacles empower negotiators to make informed decisions.
3. Building Rapport:
The foundation of successful negotiation often lies in establishing rapport. Trust is the currency of negotiation. Open communication and active listening build a conducive environment for fruitful discussions.
4. The Power of Active Listening:
Listening goes beyond hearing words; it involves understanding the underlying emotions and needs. Active listening promotes empathy and enables negotiators to address concerns effectively.
5. Strategies and Tactics:
Negotiation strategies vary based on the context. Distributive negotiation, where resources are fixed, demands a competitive approach. Integrative negotiation, on the other hand, seeks collaborative solutions that benefit all parties.
6. BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement):
Understanding your BATNA provides a safety net. It's your fallback position if negotiations fail. A strong BATNA strengthens your position and gives you the confidence to walk away if necessary.
7. Overcoming Obstacles:
Negotiations often encounter obstacles. Effective negotiators view challenges as opportunities. Whether it's handling conflict, managing emotions, or navigating cultural differences, adaptability is crucial.
8. Cultural Considerations:
In a globalized world, negotiations often transcend cultural boundaries. Awareness of cultural nuances, customs, and communication styles is vital for building bridges and avoiding misunderstandings.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Unlocking Productivity: Leveraging the Potential of Copilot in Microsoft 365, a presentation by Christoforos Vlachos, Senior Solutions Manager – Modern Workplace, Uni Systems
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
2. “The three most important words for a
successful relationship are:
communication, communication, and
communication.”
—Anonymous
3. Verbal Communication
• Verbal language is a series of
expressive thoughts and perceptions
described through word symbols.
• Linguistic experts divide verbal
communication into two components:
– encoding
– decoding
4. Verbal Communication
(continued)
• Encoding is the process wherein a
speaker attempts to frame thoughts and
perceptions into words (e.g., someone
saying to the person next to her, “Boy,
it’s stuffy in here”).
5. Verbal Communication
(continued)
• Decoding is the process wherein the
message is translated, dissected, analyzed,
and interpreted by the listener (e.g., the
person hearing this thinks, “Yeah, the room
does smell rather gamy”).
• During the encoding and decoding process,
some thoughts can get lost in translation.
• Misunderstanding, confusion, and stress can
arise anywhere in this process.
6. Communication Styles Between Genders
“Men may be from Mars and women may be
from Venus, but right now both sexes are
living on earth so we better learn to speak
the same language.”
—Lily Tomlin
7. Nonverbal Communication
• Nonverbal communication is described
as any communication that does not
involve words. It may include:
– postures
– facial expressions
– touch
– even style of clothing
8. Nonverbal Communication
(continued)
• Nonverbal communication differs from
verbal communication in that it is
multichanneled—addressing all
senses—not merely stimuli received
through the sense of hearing.
• Nonverbal communication is not only
indirect, but often unconscious.
9. Listening, Attending,
and Responding Skills
• Assume the role of listener
• Maintain eye contact.
• Avoid word prejudice.
• Use “minimal encouragers.”
• Paraphrase what was said to ensure
understanding.
10. Listening, Attending,
and Responding Skills (continued)
• Ask questions to improve clarity of
statements.
• Use empathy to reflect and share
feelings.
• Provide feedback.
• Summarize the content of what was
said.
12. Steps to Enhance Communication Skills
• Speak with precision and directness.
• Enhance your vocabulary.
• Use appropriate language for listening.
• Attack issues, not people.
• Avoid making people defensive.
13. Steps to Enhance Communication Skills
(continued)
• Talk to people yourself, not through
others.
• Avoid information overload.
• Validate your assumptions.
• Resolve problems when they arise.
14. Best Application of
Communication Skills
• For every stressor that involves another
person, communication skills are
essential to resolve the issue at hand.
• If nothing else, remember this: Attack
issues, not people.
• Be a good diplomat!
15. Study Guide Questions
1. Why do many stress-related problems involve
poor communications?
